This manual covers the operation and lubrication procedures for the Eimco Pumpable Roof Bolting Machine. This machine meets U. S. Bureau of Mines Schedule 2G Approval. This manual is divided into three major parts: 1. Machine dimensions; 2. operating instructions and; 3. Lubrication. Whenever front or rear, right or left arc mentioned it is assumed that the reader is standing behind the machine looking toward the boom. The boom is at the front of the machine. Safety When leaving machine parked on an incline turn wheels into the rib or block wheels. Do not run over power cables. Make sure your power cable is up out of the way so others can't run over it. Machine has a fire suppressor system for the power unit. The remote actuator (pressure cylinder) is located at the operator's station. Components and service procedures on page 59.

Safe operation and system integrity are two important properties of a mine hoist electrical system. Previous methods used to assess these systems, though rare, have involved extensive downtime and required skilled personnel. The recommended design considerations presented in this report are for a proposed automated system that will perform real time measurements, calculations, and recordings of pertinent performance data. Included are equipment installation and test procedures to be used with the system. The report also contains descriptions of the hoist performance criteria, and how they are to be collected.

"INTRODUCTION The First Supplemental National Defense Appropriation Act, approved August, 25,, 1941, authorized the Bureau of Mines to investigate sources of raw, material for western production and appropriated funds for that purpose. Numerous iron deposits and prospects in the Western States were investigated. Among those selected for more detailed investigation were tile Apache and Chodiski deposits in Arizona.The United States Geological Survey had examined these deposits in 1929 3/ and estimated that ""the quantity of minable ore reasonably to be expected in this locality will reach 10,000,000 long tons, but it will require prospecting by core drill to demonstrate this quantity with certainty"". C. H. Johnson, a mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines, made a preliminary examination in October 1941 and proposed exploration of the Apache deposit Canyon Creek.A trench sampling project was set up, and work at the Apache deposit commenced in November 1941. Mapping, trenching, and sampling of outcrops was completed in March 1942. Trenches were laid out at approximately 200-foot intervals for about 9,200 feet along the iron outcrop east of Canyon Creek, and channel samples were taken across the iron formation. The outcrop also was explored by trenching and sampling along a 1,900-foot outcrop on the west side of Canyon Creek.The first diamond-drilling campaign at Apache was initiated in May 1942 and continued to January 1943, when work was suspended owing to depletion of funds. Six holes spaced at approximately 500-foot intervals and, 500 feet back from the outcrop on the east side of Canyon Creek were drilled through the iron formation during this period.While this drilling was in progress, the Chediski deposit was mapped, trenched, and sampled. The trenches were spaced at intervals of approximately 800 feet along 10,000 feet of the iron-ore outcrop."

Electric - smelting studies were made on titaniferous materials obtained from the Klukwan and Snettisham , Alaska ; Choteau , Mont .; and Iron Mountain , Wyo . , deposits with the objective of determining the feasibility of producing pig iron and an enriched titania slag in one test series and pig iron alone in another test series . In addition , related studies were conducted to determine the amenability of Choteau crude ore to wet -magnetic separation and to determine the quality of steel that could be produced from the titaniferous pig iron . The continuous smelting tests were made in a three - phase , submerged - arc , electric furnace , and the laboratory steelmaking tests were made in a singlephase electric - arc furnace . A continuous , belt - type , wet - magnetic separator was used in conjunction with a ball mill and a spiral classifier in recovering titaniferous magnetite from the crude Choteau ore . Pig irons containing less than 0.05 percent phosphorus or sulfur were readily produced from the titaniferous materials ; iron recoveries ranged from 92 to 98 percent . The Choteau ore was ground to minus 65 - mesh to produce a concentrate containing 60 percent or more iron . The steel produced from the titaniferous pig iron was a high - quality product .

Noise control of existing pneumatic drills is difficult and runs into cost, performance and weight penalties. A need exists for a start-from-scratch approach for quiet pneumatic rock drills. The designs based on Leavell Principles which has been successfully used in demonstrating a quiet and vibration free paving breaker, is the concept chosen here. This report shows the feasibility of a quiet stoper for drilling roof bolt holes in coal mines. The work is directly applicable to pneumatic percussive rock drills. The report shows an oscillator based on patented Leavell concepts which results in a vibration free tool and noiseless exhaust. Dynamics of the oscilator is analyzed. Independant rotation of drill rod is provided by an air motor (screw expander) and flushing of cuttings is accomplished by an air ejector in a compact lower housing. The feasibility of no exhaust noise, low drill machine noise, and vibration free casing is discussed.

Application of a new chemical spray in a mercury mine in which ore rich in native metal was causing salivation among the miners has given such favorable results that it is believed the process will be useful in other mines and perhaps in some plants where similar conditions exist. The process was originated by Merle Randall, professor of chemistry at the University of California. GENERAL PROBLEM The presence of native quicksilver in mines from which the metal is produced has long been a source of trouble and danger to the workers. Men have been sickened and some of them have been disabled by exposure to the vapors present (even in workings that were well-ventilated by ordinary standards) and to contact with dust, dirt, and moisture with which the finely divided quicksilver was mixed. Where the ore was rich and this exposure was considerable men were able to work only a few days or weeks; where the exposure was less they were weakened and subject to ailments often attributed to other causes.

Objective The main purpose of this video is to teach mine rescue personnel certain aspects of rescue work that are not traditionally taught. These include the strain caused by working continually under adverse conditions; the "survivor guilt" that occurs from being spared the fate of one's deceased cohorts; and the posttraumatic stress that may be experienced during the sometimes lengthy task of recovering the victims' bodies. Background On November 20, 1968, an explosion rocked the Farmington No. 9 Mine in northern West Virginia (figure 1). The explosion killed 78 of 99 miners who were working in the mine, including all but one member of the mine's rescue team. Some 30 years after the event, researchers from the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) conducted a video interview with Danny Kuhn (figure 2), the only Farmington No. 9 mine rescue team member who was not working that day and who did not die in the explosion. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), there are about 80 underground coal mine rescue teams in the United States, and according to the National Mining Association, there are more than 850 underground coal mines. This represents a significant decrease in both over the past decade. The low number of rescue teams is a concern because serious incidents, though fewer, still happen, and if a disaster occurs, there will be fewer rescue teams to respond. This would result in an increased need to use available human resources very efficiently. Much training to prepare these rescue teams still takes the form of what educators call "teaching to the test." In other words, teams practice in order to win mine rescue contests. This test-oriented approach has traditionally been augmented by interactions with others who have responded to real situations or by participating in actual incidents. Given few incidents and fewer rescue teams from whom to derive enrichment, the preparation of coal mine rescue personnel becomes a problem. Recently, more emphasis has been placed on active learning, such as working out problems in smoke. These sessions more nearly simulate the actual conditions that today's team members might rarely encounter. To properly prepare and retain the current coal mine rescue personnel who are left in the workforce, it is necessary not only to offer such hands-on experience, but also to replace the learning narratives that once were passed from team to team. The present video is intended to contribute in that capacity. Approach NIOSH researchers first learned of Mr. Kuhn in the fall of1998. Mr. Kuhn was contacted and agreed to an interview. An oral history interview was conducted with Mr. Kuhn in early November1998. After reviewing the videotape of the interview, researchers determined the content to be so rich as to warrant a second interview in a more formal setting. The second interview was done in early December 1998. During this interview, Mr. Kuhn spent about 2 hours describing the Farmington disaster, including the workplace climate leading up to the explosion, the events that took place in the 10 days after the explosion, and the nearly 10-year effort to safely and successfully recover most of the victims' bodies. The videotape of the second oral history interview with Danny Kuhn was reviewed and edited by NIOSH researchers for content. Careful attention was used to ensure that valuable information was presented, but within a reasonable timeframe. A detailed map of the Farmington No. 9 Mine was edited into the final video and used to highlight critical features as they were being described by Mr. Kuhn. Results and Accomplishments A 60-minute videotape and instructor's guide for use in safety training or other settings was completed. The target audience consists of all those who work in underground coal mines. This training video will help safety instructors better prepare mine rescue team members for the situations that they will encounter when engaging in extended rescue and recovery work. SUSTAINED growth characterized the U.S. economy in 1964. Many new peaks were achieved in production, sales, employment, employee earnings, and business profits. At the end of 1964, the economy had experienced 4 years of uninterrupted expansion, and the greatest net gains in output for all postwar cyclical advances had been registered. There were no indications of the various weaknesses which have previously characterized advanced stages of business expansion. Both gross national product (GNP) and national income were 6.7 percent higher than in 1963. In 1964 GNP totaled $628.7 billion, a gain of $39.2 billion over the 1963 figure. On an overall basis, prices rose 1.75 percent in 1964. The real volume of output of goods and services (GNP in constant dollars) increased by 5.0 percent ill 1964; this was more than the 3.8-percent gain in 1963 but less than the 6.6 percent gain in 1962. The 1964 output gain also exceeded the average 3.7 percent annual increase for the postwar period. Congress authorized a two-stage tax reduction designed to further stimulate economic growth and employment. The tax cut favorably affected the 1964 economy in the following ways: By helping to boost personal income, corporate profits, and industrial production; by accelerating the pace of consumer spending and business capital expansion; and by increasing employment, thereby reducing unemployment to 5 percent. [In the original Norris and Fay method for determining selenium, selenious acid is reduced by an excess of standard thicsulfate in accordance with the following reaction: H2Se03 + 4Na2S203 + 4HC1 = Na2SeS406 + Na2S406 + 4NaC1 + X20. (1) The excess thiosutfate is then back-titrated with standard iodine solution. The disadvantages of ouch a method are obvious. On an unknown sample, the quantity of thiosutfate required would be difficult to determine; a definite excess is required, but large back titrations would be undesirable. Inasmuch as thiosulfate is decomposed by acid, considerable error may be introduced in this method, the amount depending on the acidity, temperature, concentration of excess thiosulfate, duration of contact between thiosulfate and acid, and other factors, In a critical study of the Norris and Fay method, Coleman and McCrosky3/ show that the method is accurate to less than .1 part per thousand if the excess of this sulfate Is not greater than 5 ml. of 0.1 N solution (in 1.0 ml. of 0.x4 N sulfuric acid) whether the titration is made at 0° or 20°C. A greater excess produced unsatisfactory values at either temperature. Coleman and McCrosky regulated the excess thiosulfate by adding 5-ml. portions of thiosulfate solution followed by the addition of 1 to 3 drops of 2.5 percent potassium iodide in the presence of starch. If a starch-iodine blue color formed locally around the drops of potassium Iodide, the reduction of selenious acid was not complete. On stirring the solution, the local blue color fades and another 5-ml. portion of thiosulfate is added. When addition of potassium iodide fails to produce a local blue color, reduction of selenious acid is complete, and the excess thiosulfate is then back-titrated with standard Iodine solution. The number of equivalents involved in the reduction of selenious acid by either thiosulfate or iodide is the same, and therefore no correction need be made for the potassium iodide. This procedure is much better than the original Norris-Fay titration, but acidity and time would stilt be rather critical factors subject to variation with individual technique. Also, the method still requires the lose of two standard solutions, a rather undesirable factor from the standpoint of routine application.]

The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is practicable in a reactor where the exothermic heat of reaction is removed by circulating large quantities of recycle gas through a catalyst bed of high-voids content. At an hourly space velocity of 1100, the feed gas, a mixture of 1.5 parts hydrogen to 1 of carbon monoxide, was converted 90 percent, producing hydrocarbons predominantly in the gasoline range. At these conditions a recycle-to-fresh gas ratio of 40:1 was enough to give excellent temperature control with a pressure drop of 1.5 p.s.i. per foot of bed using a steel catalyst in the form of lathe turnings. Steel parallel plates, although offering lower resistance to gasflow, were less reactive and less durable. INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a research and development program since 1944 on the synthesis of gasoline from coal. Gasification of coal with steam and oxygen to yield a synthesis gas--a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen--is being investigated at Morgantown, W. Va.; and the synthesis of gasoline by catalytically reacting the carbon monoxide and hydrogen over iron by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction is being investigated at Bruceton, Pa.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report discusses the status of a laser-based guidance system to provide position and heading feedback and closed-loop control of tramming maneuvers for a continuous mining machine. The system has been developed and tested at the Bureau, and is now being prepared for underground experiments. The system hardware includes laser scanners, a sensor communication network, and host computer hardware. The system software includes a position and heading computation module and a tram control module. The description of the software includes discussions of laser data acquisition, error compensation methods, position and heading determination, safety checking for continuous miner tramming, and closed-loop tram control. The accuracy of the laser scanner's data, the reliability of the lasers in a dusty environment, and the system's accuracy on tracking the position and heading of the continuous mining machine are shown in the results of experiments performed at the Bureau. Conclusions are stated based on these experimental results, and further work to improve the system performance and prepare for underground testing is discussed.

This Bureau of Mines publication describes a passive personal sampling device for N02 in air, developed by the New York University Medical Center under Bureau Grant G0133066. The sampler has been successfully demonstrated in the field and in the laboratory. In corroborative laboratory trials the agreement with reference method is excellent. The overall accuracy is approximately ±5 pct of reading to a precision of about ±l pct. All evidence indicates that these samplers should indicate the time-weighted-average N02 concentration to the above accuracy and precision equally well in the field since effects of wind velocity and relative humidity are negligible and the effects of temperature are about 0.1 pct per °F. The duration of exposure and the approximate temperature are the only data that need to be collected in the field. A two-step analysis procedure in field or service laboratory is then used to obtain the total cumulated exposure to N02 in parts per million-hours (ppm times hours), which can be converted to the time-weighted-average concentration of N02 in ppm by dividing cumulated exposure by the duration of the exposure.

In 1978, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey completed a joint mineral survey of the Chemise Mountain and King Range study areas as mandated by the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1916, Public Law 94-579. The U.S. Bureau of Mines examined all identified mineral prospects and deposits; the results of these examinations are included in this report. The U.S. Geological Survey studied the regional geology, geochemistry, and geophysics; the results of these studies are available in USGS Map MF-1196. No mineral resources were identified in either the Chemise Mountain or King Range study areas; however, a high-grade silver and base-metal occurrence, and minor manganese resources were identified in between the two study areas, within the King Range Conservation Area. The only mining activity in either area was a placer gold prospect on Honeydew creek in the northeastern part of the King Range study area. Three samples from this prospect contained no gold. The Chemise Mountain and King Range study areas are in a mountainous region along the coast of northern California, 230 road miles north of San Francisco, and 70 miles south of Eureka by way of U.S. Highway 101, through Garberville and Redway. The Chemise Mountain study area consists of 3,941 acres; it includes the 2,598-ft Chemise Mountain, and the cliff-lined seacoast southeast of Shelter Cove. a resort and fishing village. The King Range study area consists of 39.764 acres northwest of Shelter Cove, and includes the northwest-trending King Range with elevations above 4,000 ft. The Chemise and King Range study areas are underlain by deep-water marine sandstones, shales, and minor pillow basalts of the Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary Franciscan Subduction Complex. Mineral production was 1,650 tons of manganese ore within a manganiferous bed overlying pillow basalt at the Queen Peak mine southeast of the King Range study area. However, no significant manganese resources were found in the Queen Peak area. The Point Delgada area, directly south of the King Range study area, has prospects with high grade copper, lead. silver, and zinc. Exposures are inadequate to estimate resources; however, the metals may be associated with Franciscan volcanism (volcanogenic). The Chemise and King Range study areas may contain similar economic silver-rich, base-metal deposits.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, conducted a study of past mine explosions to identify the ignition locations and ignition sources responsible for the most severe explosion events resulting in death. Since the Scotia disaster of 1976, many fatalities from underground coal mine explosions have been linked to nonpermissible electrical equipment ignition sources located in intake air courses. With few exceptions, explosion protected equipment is generally not required in intake air courses of gassy underground coal mines in the US. Cigarette lighters were another prevalent ignition source for fatal explosions ignited in intake air courses. Several mine rescue/ recovery teams have encountered electrical ignition hazards. The study provides evidence that intake air courses of gassy underground coal mines fit the description of certain Hazardous (classified) locations described in the US National Electrical Code®. Class I Division 2 or Zone 2 explosion protection tech¬niques may be used to design intake air equipment so that it does not present an ignition source under normal operation, before mine power is shut down in emergency situations. Nonpermissible circuits in intake air courses that are likely to remain energized during emergencies, e.g. battery powered equipment, should be protected by more stringent Class I Division 1, Zone 1, or Zone 0 techniques, to protect rescue/recovery personnel.

This paper describing the dredging operation of J. K. Davison & Bro. on the Allegheny River near Pittsburgh, Pa., is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of dredging sand and gravel in the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of gamma radiation on materials and chemical reactions to obtain information that could be of value in modern metallurgical practices . Various combinations of metals and their ores and compounds were irradiated in attempts to effect reactions that might be applicable in the extraction and separation of metal values from minerals and The types of reactions studied included complexing of salts , decomposition of hydrated salts , metal chlorination reactions , leaching of ores and minerals , halogen exchange , and various reducing reactions . All irradiations were performed at the Materials Testing Reactor Gamma Facility of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission at Idaho Falls , Idaho . Spent fuel elements were utilized as the source of the gamma radiation . Some irradiation - induced changes , ranging from mere color change to participation in chemical reactions , were noted . The greatest value of these investigations , however , was the experience acquired , which should be valuable in future explorations of similar nature .

"INTRODUCTION Recovery of core specimens from subsurface formations and their subsequent analysis are important aids in efficient development and operation of oil and gas fields. Gore specimens first were obtained mainly for the geologic information they revealed; now they are analyzed to determine many of the physical characteristics and conditions of the subsurface formations as well. Cores recovered from the producing formations may be analyzed for porosity, permeability, oil content, ""connate"" water content, and other physical and chemical properties of the formation, all to the end of furnishing enough data for making reliable estimates of the quantity and avail¬ability of oil and as within a reservoir and in devising efficient means for their withdrawal.Examination of bottom-hole samples of oil gives valuable information concerning the amount of gas in solution in the oil within the reservoir and the resultant shrinkage of the oil when the gas is released. Producing characteristics of reservoirs nay be determined by means of subsurface pressure and temperature gages and measurements male at the wellhead; however, unless reliable core analyses are available, these data have only limited use in any quantitative study of reserves. In such a study the quantity of oil, gas, and water contained in a unit volume of the reservoir formation is extremely important. Although reliable methods of analyzing cores have been developed and the data thus obtained are valuable, their applications become more limited or reservoirs at higher temperatures and pressures are discovered. This condition results almost entirely from the fact that in recovering a core from a formation of high pressure and temperature by present methods a large part of the fluid content of the core is lost or contaminated to an unknown extent. For a number of years most petroleum engineers have held that if this loss and contamination of the fluid content of a core were eliminated, the value of core analyses would be increased greatly."

This Bureau of Mines report presents the results of a study conducted to assess the domestic availability of chromium from superalloy and cast heat- and corrosion-resistant alloy scrap material. Six alloy classes included in this survey were investment cast, hardfacing, and wrought nickel- and cobalt-base alloys, wrought nickel-iron-base alloys, and heat- and corrosion-resistant alloy castings. Data were collected for 1976 on metallic scrap generation, use patterns, and production practices for these alloy producing and using industries. A model was developed that allowed an assessment of the materials flow circuits within the industries that produce these alloys. The types, amounts, sources, secondary products, and ultimate destinations of chromium- containing metallic scrap for the six alloy classes were determined. Regarding the overall recycling efficiency of these alloy producing and using industries, of the 580.9 million pounds of scrap generated from these six alloy classes in 1976, about 72 percent (416.8 million pounds) was remelted by the same alloy-producing industries, about 18 percent (104.9 million pounds) was downgraded into stainless and low-alloy steels, about 3 percent (19.7 million pounds) was exported, and about 7 percent (39.5 million pounds) was lost through landfill or other disposal or service wastage. The lost material is primarily contaminated oxides for which recovery is currently uneconomic. However, the 124.6 million pounds of scrap material downgraded or exported in 197b contained potentially recoverable critical strategic elements. The amount of scrap material lost to the six alloy-producing industries in this manner contained 22.1 million pounds of chromium, 53.4 million pounds of nickel, 5.9 million pounds of cobalt, 35.9 million pounds of iron, and 7.3 million pounds of other alloying elements.

Assessment of workplace exposures is an important tool for helping to minimize dust-related occupational illness and diseases. Real-time particulate monitoring can effectively locate areas where dust controls are needed and determine how well they are working. An affordable, person-wearable, real-time dust monitor is needed. The SKC Inc. Dust Detective (SKCDD) fulfills those requirements (Disclaimer: Mention of any company or product does not imply endorsement by NIOSH). The SKCDD consists of a disposable sampling tube (DST) connected to a small hand-held sampling pump. The SKCDD was developed through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and SKC Inc. The relationship of dust concentrations measured by personal gravimetric samplers to those measured by the SKCDD was determined in a laboratory aerosol chamber. A comparison of the means and the relative standard deviation of triplicate measurements of each type of sampling device demonstrated the SKCDD to be a viable alternative means for measuring dust. While it provides accurate measurements for specific coal types, it requires correction factors (those correction factors still need to be calculated) for other coal types.
