In 2001, the Radomiro Tomic Mine located near Calamq Chile, added a tertiary crushing facility. An 84" wide mobile tripper is used to fill their tertiary crushing storage facility. This paper is a we study to demonstrate the drive and control systems in use on the tripper. Of special note is the design concept used to allow the system to operate multiple motors in both demand and regenerative modes through a single VFD. Also noted is the use of touch screen local controls, handheld radio controls, starting/stopping/ braking philosophies, safety device interfaces, and the local to remote control interface.

Chemical dewatering aids for mineral slurries generally fall into two classes: surfactants and flocculants, which can be used separately or together. Current industrial use of both types of reagents is summarized for sulfide and non-metallic minerals, as well as uranium and gold leach residues and coal refuse. Laboratory testing for reagent selection is briefly discussed along with reagent preparation. This paper describes a case study for the ventilation planning at Utah Fuel Company's Skyline Mines which are located outside Price. Utah. The Skyline Mines are currently comprised of two longwall coal mining blocks located in two different mines. A third replacement longwall block is currently being developed. Future ventilation systems for the mines were determined by establishing ventilation models developed from data collected during a detailed ventilation survey. The paper discusses the challenge to coordinate immediate ventilation requirements with long-term demands. The continuous movement of the longwall, which frequently represented the only open split in the ventilation network, resulted in cyclic ventilation demands dependent upon the length of the tailgate. A series of system configuration changes were recommended based on the results of the network modeling exercise and an economic evaluation of the various options. The scope and cost of the configuration changes, and the mead improvement resulting from these changes is discussed.

The clays in Eastern Washington occur in a variety of forms and are extracted for uses in Face Brick, paper coatings, and aggregates. Not in large volumes in comparison to other areas, not even from impressive large mines. However, mans utilization of these clays has progressed from historical clay tablets to the present technically oriented manufactured products of today. White Face Brick, perhaps the whitest produced anywhere is the unique product produced by INTERPACE CORPORATION's Mica Plant from these unusual clays. It is this basic characteristic feature of the clay's in the Mica area that differentiate them from the other clay's in this belt. ORIGIN The significant properties of clay's used in Face Brick are plasticity, fired color, fired strength, dry and fired shrinkage, the PCE or Pyrometeric Cone Equivalent, and extrudability. Testing clay's for these properties is standard laboratory procedure. No two clays are alike, and seldom can one clay be substituted for another. Mica White Clays respond favorable to all these properties, but more especially, the Mica Clays fire to a brilliant white color, from almost the natural state. The geologic history of Eastern Washington is largely conjectural because of the absence of rocks representing segments of geologic time. The oldest rocks in this area are the argillaceous and arenaceous sedimentary rocks which have been slightly metamorphosed. These rocks have been correlated with the Belt Series of the Pre-Cambrian age, although some may be older. The present contribution investigates the way of applying benchmarking for large-scale open-pit mining operations based on sustainability indicators proposed by numerous institutions or groups of experts. These indicators have been developed taking into consideration the legal and regulatory framework that are in force. However, their scope is not only to declare the mining company?s compliance with all legal requirements but also to represent its economic, environmental, and social performance. In this way, sustainability indicators allow assessment of a company?s capacity to produce commodities, to meet the environmental quality requirements and to contribute to a long-term economic, cultural and social development of the local communities.

The effect of liner shape on power consumption was studied in a small laboratory mill under various operating conditions. It was found that the angle subtended between the lifter front face and the face in contact with the mill case has the most significant influence. The increasing height of lifter reduced power consumption, whereas the lifter spacing did not show any influence. The effect of height is less relevant at lower front angles. Highest power consumption is achieved with a 45" front angle. A comparison of cylinders and balls under identical conditions gives higher power consumption for ball charges. The data does suggest that, for maximum power draw, slip in the outer layers of the charge and the early recirculation of energy to the mill case should be avoided. Both factors prevent an efficient energy transfer to the mill charge.

This paper presents a dynamic model for column flotation. The model equations are normalized and the dimensionless groups that are directly responsible in determining the column flotation behavior are identified. The resulting model equations are incorporated for computer simulation. Numerical results from computer simulations are analyzed to gather information about design and operation of column flotation devices.

The physical chemistry of dissolution of silicate and complex oxide ores in aqueous lixiviants has been reviewed. Particular attention has been paid to the analysis of dissolution mechanisms and kinetic models and to the elucidation of the role of the porous nature of the materials on dissolution behavior. Importance of the physico-chemical characteristics of the leach residues on leaching efficiency has been discussed.

Column flotation is emerging as one of the most important new separation technologies of the decade. Attendant to this development is the need for a quantitative understanding of the dynamic characteristics of columns. An understanding of the many important sub-processes occurring in the cell makes possible the development of dynamic simulators for flotation columns which will aid in the design of control systems for dynamic and steady state optimization. This paper presents a dynamic model for the column flotation cell developed from a population balance point of view similar to that which has been successfully applied to conventional flotation cells. In particular, the mixing that occurs within the pulp is modeled with a distributed-volume, mixer-in-series model as an approximation to the axially dispersed plug flow transport that occurs in the cell. This simpler approach avoids the distributed transport model which often leads to mathematical intractability. Other phenomena dealt with are the attachment and detachment of particles from bubbles in the froth and pulp, the transport of water and the bubble volumes with the froth and pulp phases. Simulation of the flotation of an Illinois No. 6 coal in a pilot plant flotation column were performed to test control strategies.

The Goldstrike autoclave plant is designed for the pressure oxidation of 1363 t/d (1500 stpd) of refractory gold ore. The plant was commissioned in early February 1990 over a one week period - an unusually short period for a plant of this complexity. The rapid plant start-up is attributed to certain detailed design and control aspects of the plant. This paper discusses key features of the autoclave plant with emphasis on the design of the splash/flash system of heat recovery and the control systems. Commissioning and plant operations over the first three months are reviewed.

The selection, testing, and commercial utilization of flotation reagents is best carried out in stages through microflotation tests on pure minerals and their synthetic mixtures followed by bench-scale batch flotation tests on the ore. A systematic approach to quantitatively evaluate different reagents, in particular, through the analysis of batch flotation data, has been presented in this paper. It is recommended that the reagents are compared both in terms of their performance with respect to the recovery-time as well as the recovery-grade plots. While the former describes the kinetic aspects of reagent interaction, the latter is a measure of its selectivity for a particular separation problem.

The Call for Papers described the session as "Top down applications; management tools for decisions, planning, investment/finance, and negotiations." In order to attract papers, and know which ones to include as well as those to reject, it was necessary to (1) define the executive suite, (2) review what had been done in previous APCOM symposia, and (3) find out what's happening now, what isn't being done, and what can be predicted. To accomplish this, especially the third task, senior managers throughout the mineral industry were generous with their time in telephone and personal interviews. Five papers were selected for presentation at the symposium and inclusion in the proceedings; the content is divided between the Executive suite in the mineral industry and those elements which apply to any Executive Suite. The Executive Suite is the top portion of the organizational tri- angle (I), those to whom the managers of functional areas such as exploration, production, finance, and marketing report. The make-up and specific activities within an executive suite reflect the organization and culture of its corporation. As there is no typical corporation, there is no typical executive suite; however, those who work within the executive suite typically do not have day to day operational responsibilities and either are, or report to, the Chief Executive Officer.

It also gives a general account of the present practices for mining, processing and extraction of gold. Flowsheets of some selected plants are presented. The environmental aspects involved with gold production are also considered.

The pressure filtration behaviors of dispersed and flocculated alumnae slurries at high percent solids were investigated with the objective of determining the effect of surfactant type and concentration on slurry properties. A high-purity alumina powder was used as a model solid. Dispersion of the alumina was controlled by pH and by surfactants that are known to act as electric and steric stabilizers. The effects of both ionic and nonionic sutfactants were investigated. Surface charge measurements of the slurries were carried out by an electrokinetic sonic amplitude (ESA) method to better understand the mechanisms. The effect of surfactant type and concentration on the kinetics of pressure filtration and cake properties are discussed.

This paper describes research that seas conducted on bit wear and respirable-dust generation. The investigation was performed by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and West Virginia University (WVU), a member of the Generic Technology Center on Respirable Dust. The USBM investigated wear, energy and dust characteristics of various conical bit designs when cutting rock. WVU studied the functional relationships between wear, cutting force, energy and dust of one type of conical bit cutting coal. The objective of the USBM study was to identify qualitative bit-selection guidelines. The objective of WVU's research was to determine optimum bit-replacement guidelines. Both research studies found that bit geometry (a function of bit design and wear) influences energy consumption and dust generation. Bit selection and replacement recommendations are given.

Comminution is the single most expensive operation in mineral processing. It consumes about 50% of the energy required for mineral extraction (Agar, 1976). Current comminution technology is both energy-intensive and inefficient. A novel noncontact comminution process concept was developed in this study, whereby selective lib¬eration of minerals from an ore could be potentially achieved. The process involves application of electric and ultrasonic energy to liberate minerals from gangue particles. Introduction The mineral industry is a large user of energy in the US. Energy usage is increasing as the grade of ores processed decreases. It is es¬timated that comminution of ores uses about 32 000 kWh (115 trillion kJ), or 2% of the electric power produced in the US (NMAB-365, 1981). Among other minerals, ce¬ment, iron, and copper processing plants are the largest users of en¬ergy in comminution. Very little of this energy used in conventional grinding (about 1%) is used to gen¬erate new surface. The remainder is wasted (Table 1). Thus, there are substantial energy-saving and economic incentives to improve the efficiency of crushing and grinding techniques for mineral recovery. With an energy efficiency of only 1%, it would seem possible to devise methods to significantly improve comminution technology. This requires that breakage force be applied only where needed, not indiscriminately as in a conven¬tional ball mill (NMAB-365, 1981). Can apparatus and methods be de¬ veloped for large-scale commer¬cial use that allow energy to be fo¬cused at intergranular bounda¬ries? If this can be done, mono¬mineral grains would remain in¬tact and the grinding action would be selective and substantially more efficient. The novel comminution process concept described in this paper uses a combination of electric and ultrasonic energy. This energy breaks the ore and selectively lib¬erates minerals. The process has also been termed a two-stage or electroacoustical comminution process (Goldberger, Epstein, and Parekh, 1982). The mineral grain boundary is usually the weakest area in an ore. By applying electri¬cal energy to the ore, the rock frac¬tures mostly at grain boundaries. At the same time, the electric shock creates secondary hairline fractures in the ore. Additional application of ultrasonic energy to this ore provides further break¬age. The concept was proven on a molybdenum porphyry ore but needs additional study. Technical Background There have been substantial im¬provements in milling machinery and grinding operations, but rela¬tively few attempts have been made to develop alternatives to conventional impact milling. Sev¬eral methods, however, have been investigated that relate to this study. In the early 1970s there was considerable interest in a size re¬duction method known as the Snyder Process (Cavanaugh, 1972). It involved charging coarse ore into a pressure chamber, pressur¬izing with a gas, and activating a quick-opening (15 msec ) dis¬charge valve that connected the chamber to a discharge duct. This allowed solids to fluidize and ac¬celerate, subjecting the material to a variety of impulse phenomena that caused the desired size reduction. Other nonimpact means of achieving breakage and selective size reduction have been de¬scribed in technical and patent literature. Kanellopoulos and Ball (1975) considered using heat to induce thermal stress in quartz¬ite. This would cause cracking and, thus, increase grinding efficiency. Use of computers for hoist evaluation and design dates back to the early 1960's. Mine hoist production calculations, repetitive in nature, were computerized first. More elaborate modeling of hoist operations followed soon. Typical for this, early period are the models described by Touwen (1973), and by Albert and McIvor (1984). Apart from the simple hoist production calculations, the models were very complex, typically written in Fortran, and often required advanced computing facilities and expertise to run the simulation. The early models were strictly deterministic, with no consideration given to the random nature of hoisting operations. The effects of randomness of the hoisting process on hoist performance were often accounted for by introduction of the deterministic factors, most notably of an "utilization factor" related to the hoist production. The value of the latter was based on observations of actual hoist performance, and could vary in a wide range. For example Harvey (1973) reports values of the "utilization factor" to be between 0.7 and 0.92.

This paper deals with the problem of efficiently selecting the most appropriate loading and hauling equipment for surface mines. Problems and factors that affect productivity and operating cost are identified. During the course of collecting the information for this study, mining companies and equipment manufacturers were interviewed to define their selection practices. The majority of mining companies prepare general specifications and ask the suppliers to mate those specifications to their product line. The mining company then evaluates various proposals on the basis of the best available deal. The following 'mines from western Canada provided information for this study: Coal Mountain, Line Creek, Quintette, Westar's Harmer mine from the Province of British Columbia, and Coal Valley, Gregg River, Highvale, Luscar from the Province of Alberta.
