This paper aims at the application of quantitative criteria for evaluating the mineral potential of square cells representing areas in terrains being explored at a reconnaissance level. The assumption is made here that the evaluation methods used by an expert economic geologist can be organized into geological models for establishing associations within imaged areas, that correspond to pixels with similar characteristics. UTM-registered multiple data sets have been constructed which include seasonal LANDSAT 2 and 4 images, SEASAT scenes, selected airborne radar images, digitized aeromagnetic, gravity, bedrock geology and topographic elevation maps. The area of interest is located in the Bathurst Inlet, District of MacKenzie, N.W.T., where a preliminary mineral potential evaluation was performed by the Geological Survey of Canada to assess its suitability for a national park. The multiple data sets described in this paper can be used for many studies at different resolutions, for comparing processing methods in remote sensing and, most importantly, for evaluating the physical and spatial relationships between the different images in registered data sets.

Risk assessment, risk management, and engineering/economic feasibility analysis are presented as three effective, practical tools for decision making in the remediation of contaminated soils. Risk assessment is applied to evaluate the extent, magnitude and sources of contamination, to identify appropriate contaminants of concern (COCs). Risk management is then applied to identify the acceptable contaminant residual levels for the COCs. Finally, engineering/economic feasibility analysis is used to define the appropriate cost-effective remedial action and associated target contaminant action levels that will achieve the acceptable contaminant residual levels. A real site application of this decision making approach is presented. This site illustrates that through appropriate engineering, acceptable risk-based contaminant residual levels can be achieved with higher action levels.

Some gold production was obtained from placer deposits in Puerto Rico during the period of Spanish colonial rule, but most of the gold was produced prior to 1536. There had been no significant hard rock mining, other than in quarries for road metal or construction purposes or for raw materials to make cement, prior to 1954 when the government of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico recognized that changes in the mining code were necessary to stimulate exploration for metalliferous ore deposits. The Puerto Rican Legislature passed an act (No. 6), which was approved on Oct. 6, 1954, that reiterated that the title to all "commercial minerals" is vested in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The act provided for the establishment of a Mining Commission, stipulated the power% with which the Mining Commission was vested, and provided that no one may dispose of "commercial minerals" in Puerto Rico without a Commonwealth grant issued on its behalf by the Mining Commission. Act No. 6 also provided for prospecting permits, mining leases, and grants. The Mining Commission, by authority granted to it by Act No. 6, adopted regulations effective Nov. 21, 1957, relating to prospecting, leasing, and producing commercial minerals in Puerto Rico. Royalty rates were also specified for various types of deposits at different annual tonnage production levels.

Soil next to a smelter abandoned about 100 years ago near Socorro, NM was found, by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to contain high Pb concentrations. Detailed characterization of the soil by the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources (Bureau) shows that the highest Pb concentration is in the clay-size fraction, although this fraction accounts for only 1 to 3 wt % of the soil. The depth of contamination, determined in areas relatively undisturbed since the smelter was abandoned, is no more than 76 mm (3 in.). Because of the soil's alkalinity, the Pb mobility is dominated by the movement of Pb-bearing particles, as opposed to chemical transport in solution.

Trona, Na3(CO3)(HCO3) ? 2H20, is mined in quantity from saline facies of the Eocene Green River Formation of southwestern Wyoming. The Green River deposits are the world's largest known resource of natural sodium carbonates. An estimated 127 billion tons of trona ore are known to occur in beds exceeding 4 ft in thickness (Wiig and others, 1995). Twenty-five trona beds, exceeding 3 ft in thickness, and covering at least 100 mil have been identified. The beds are numbered sequentially in ascending stratigraphic order. Trona beds underlie more than 850 mil (bed 17) and are up to 37 ft thick (bed 1) (Culbertson, 1966). Five underground mines, operating in beds 17, 19, 20, 24, and 25, process trona to produce soda ash (sodium carbonate). A total of 11,837,703 short tons of soda ash were produced from 17.1 million tons of trona ore in 1997 (Kostick and Clark, 1998). A detailed study of trona bed 17, using techniques of petrography and X-ray diffraction, has been undertaken in the Solvay trona mine, near Green River, Wyoming. A continuous, vertical-channel sample was taken from near the production shaft for this study. At this location, bed 17 is 12.6 ft thick and includes several stratigraphic markers that are easily correlated throughout the mine and in surrounding drill cores. Bed 17 in this area averages 90% trona through its entire thickness (Wiig and others, 1995) and 95-100% trona in the lower two-thirds of the bed. Mineral impurities include water-insoluble dolomite, quartz, pyrite, clays, and other minerals and partially water-soluble northupite and shortite. Northupite, Na3Mg(CO3)2C1, contributes to chloride contamination in the soda-ash product and is concentrated in the upper one-third of bed 17, which is left behind as roof rock. Northupite has two modes of occurrence: (1) as bedded strata with dolomite, chert, clay, and shortite and (2) between primary trona crystals in trona spar. Petrographic and mineralogic data indicate that this section of bed 17 was deposited subaqueously during its early and late history and may have undergone periods of deposition in a subaerial or marshy environment. Stratigraphic data indicate that trona accumulated at an annual rate of 2-4 in. per year. During trona deposition, dolomite, CaMg(C03)2, precipitated in parting layers when new water entered the lake, freshening supplies of calcium and magnesium. The lack of clay minerals in the trona facies suggests water input may be by means of springs, as opposed to overland flow. Clay occurrences in thicker dolomitic partings within the trona facies indicate periods of episodic overland flow, possibly resulting from storms in the surrounding basin.

A group of bisbenzylisoquinoline (BBIQ) alkaloids has been shown to exhibit various degrees of effectiveness in preventing silicainduced fibrosis in animal models (1, 2). The capability of these drugs to interact with phosphatidycholine vesicles and rat alveolar macrophages was studied using fluorometric and equilibrium dialysis methods. The lipid binding affinity of these alkaloids was found to depend upon several structural factors including hydrophobic substitutions, the chiral configurations, and the double oxygen bridge-restricted conformation of the benzylisoquinoline moieties. Tetrandrine, which is highly effective in preventing fibrosis, showed strong binding to both lipid vesicles and alveolar macrophages. In contrast, curine and tubocurine, which have little or no effect on silicosis, exhibited only weak binding to lipid vesicles and almost no binding to cells. The moderate binding affinity of fangchinoline to vesicles and cells corresponded to a moderate effectiveness of the compound as an antifibrogenic agent. Methoxyadiantifoline, an alkaloid of unknown antifibrogenic potential, also exhibited high binding affinities for lipid and cells. In summary, this study indicates that alveolar macrophages exhibit large binding capacities for certain members of the BBIQ alkaloids. A positive correlation was observed between binding affinity to alveolar macrophages and the reported antifibrotic potency of these compounds, suggesting that the ability of these drugs to interact with alveolar macrophages may be a key step in inhibition of the progression of silica-induced pulmonary disease.

Bacterial leaching is a mature technology and has been applied in six commercial plants with others in the design stage or under construction. Bacterial oxidation is a relatively inexpensive process which uses naturally occurring soil bacteria to assist in extraction of base and precious metals. Bacterial oxidation has ini­tially been applied for gold recovery but the technology is now being transferred to base metal leaching with processes already developed for copper, cobalt and nickel. Bacterial oxidation plants often have capital and operating cost advantages over competing technologies and do not need a highly skilled workforce. The most common species found in the conditions used for bacterial oxidation and bacterial leaching are Thiobacillus fer­rooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans. One common species other than Thiobaci!lus found in the commercial bacterial leach cultures is Leptospirillum ferrooxidans. Mixed cultures of the three species named here have formed the basis of the technolo­gy applied in most of the commercial applications of bacterial leaching to date. These bacterial species already mentioned all belong in the classification of mesophiles and have an operating range from 20 to 43°C. One other culture, a moderate thermophile operating over the range 40 to 50°C, has been used in one commercial plant in Western Australia. Bacterial oxidation takes place in acidic solutions under aer­obic conditions. The oxidation reaction normally produces iron (II) in solution which is ultimately conve1ted into the iron (III) form. The pH value falls naturally as the sulphide minerals are oxidised and the starting pH value can fall as low as pH 0.6 as the oxidation reaction proceeds. This paper examines the impact of the technology selection and its application on the design, engineering and operation of a bacterial oxidation plant. The effect of the changes to these para­meters on the cost of the bacterial oxidation plant is discussed.

The handling of radioactive waste deposits from factories that produce chemical fertilizers is a difficult problem, but has a great significance for soil quality and for the environment. The Romanian legislation has produced law and normative acts concordant with EU regulations for prevention and protection, and also for environmental contamination control with radionuclides. The soils and agricultural plants in the vicinity of phosphogypsum deposits are radioactively contaminated; the annual variability of the respective radioactivity values is demonstrated by annual records. Residual radioactivity monitoring determines the presence of radioactive ions in the soil and cultivated plants: wheat, maize, sunflower, as well as the spontaneous flora. The results obtained lead to the conclusion that ecological restoration works must be executed for degraded soils due to impacts of radioactive materials.

INTRODUCTION This paper deals with some practical aspects of the use and interpretation of dosimetric methods for assessing the exposure of workers to natural uranium. Consideration must be given not only to the scientific value of the method of dosimetry, but also to the practicality of the method in the particular working environment. It is generally accepted (IAEA, 1976) that uranium does not present a hazard during the mining and extraction processes up to the final concentration stage, that is precipitation as ADU or calcining to the oxide. Further processing (e.g. conversion to oxides, fluorides, etc.) is generally associated with the nuclear industry. It is customary for uranium processing facilities to be managed according to industrial norms rather than according to those applied for the purpose of radiation protection. This is mainly because of the large quantity of material to be processed and the fact that uranium is considered to be of a low radiotoxicity. Although ventilation is used to some extent, provision is not made for the same level of protection as would be required in a radiochemical facility. It is typical in such a plant to find that the process itself may be enclosed and ventilated, but the ventilation is inadequate to cope with an accidental release of material. The working environment is poorly ventilated, sometimes only by natural ventilation, and one frequently finds areas with high airborne dust levels, designated as mandatory respirator areas. Protection of personnel is dependent on personal protective equipment. Radiation protection is not of prime concern and personnel are not specifically trained in this subject. It is in this type of environment that acceptable monitoring procedures and personnel dosimetry must be established. The effectiveness and practical application of the dosimetry must also be judged against this working environment. DOSIMETRIC TECHNIQUES The methods available for assessing personnel exposure, whether it be in terms of chemical or radiological hazard, include urinalysis, faecal analysis and [in vivo] monitoring. Faecal analysis does not present itself easily as a method for routine use. Techniques for [in vivo] monitoring have been developed recently and as expensive instrumentation is required, it is not generally available. That leaves urinalysis as a dosimetric technique for routine use, and it is probably for this reason that urinalysis is still widely used. Guidelines for the interpretation of urinalysis results, as originally provided by Neuman (Neuman, 1950), are still used in practice, even though it has become clear that this method has severe limitations as regards the assessment of the dose as a result of the intake of class W or class Y compounds (Alexander, 1974). Typically a level of 300 µg [U/C] urine can serve as an indicator of an acute exposure (above which chemical damage to the kidneys may occur) and a level of 100 µg [U/C ] urine can serve as an indicator for an investigation. Such levels are determined and are used in conjunction with several factors, such as mode of intake (ingestion or inhalation), solubility of compound (D, W or Y), means of intake (acute or chronic), environmental monitoring results and frequency of urine sampling. Since the ICRP concept for internal radiation limitation changed from that of the critical organ, i.e. the single organ of greatest significance under the circumstances, to that of effective dose equivalent, i.e. account being taken of the total risk due to the exposure of all tissue, the maximum permissible organ burden (MPOB) was replaced as secondary dose limit by the annual limit on intake (ALI) (ICRP, 1977). The ALI values are calculated from the committed dose equivalents of the various organs, and are used to determine organ burdens, which are then used to interpret the dosimetric results. Using the ICRP model (ICRP, 1979), a comprehensive calculation was made by Johnson (Johnson, 1980), giving organ burdens and excretion data in terms of intake for acute and chronic exposures for different categories of uranium compounds. The question arises as to what extent the direct measurement of intake can be utilised as a method of dosimetry. This will require a method of personal intake measurement for each individual worker, with both ingestion and inhalation being taken into account. A measurement of

The paper then discusses communication with stakeholders as opposed to lecturing to the public and the authorities, and states that the industry needs to work more directly towards politicians and regulators as target groups. The conclusion is that we still have a way to go before the industry is doing enough to bring our message to the right people, but we are improving.

A lysimeter designed to measure suction and collect a pore water sample from unsaturated waste rock has been developed and its performance has been verified in two large scale column tests. The test columns were constructed to bracket the envelope of grainsize curves for waste rock from Northern Saskatchewan. The suction profile within the columns was measured under a series of infiltration rates using tensiometers and these were compared to the lysimeter readings. The rate at which pore water samples could be collected was also measured under each infiltration rate. Lysimeter measurements of suction were found to be slightly lower than the tensiometers.

Anhydrite-based dam constructions, which have been implemented successfully in other geological formations, were investigated with regard to their suitability in salt mines. The laboratory investigations show that anhydrite-based building materials with suitable additives bind safely in spite of the high temperatures in salt mines which normally pre-vent hydration. The dependence of the compressive strength, swelling behavior, porosity and permeability upon the choice and ratio of binding material components and additives was determined. Based on the results of these investigations, a pilot-scale experiment was carried out at the GSF Research Mine Asse (Germany) using a mixture suitable for the prevailing conditions

Introduction Pebble mill grinding can be defined as wet or dry grinding in a tumbling mill with pebbles used as grinding media instead of metal balls. To clarify the terminology, which may differ in the various mineral industries, it is essential to point out the differences between grinding with partially sized and carefully sized grinding media. When grinding with partially sized media (limited top size only), sizing is usually the setting of the primary crusher and there is no bottom sizing-all fines, chips, sand, and small sizes are included. This is often called run-of-mine or primary autogenous grinding. In this case the entire crusher discharge is fed into the mill and part of it becomes "charge" and the rest is "sand feed." When grinding with carefully sized media (i.e., media that is sized both at the top and bottom of the size range), no fines or chips should be present in the charge to the mill. This is pebble milling and the grinding media consists of ore, rock, Danish pebbles, gravel pebbles, or ceramic pebbles-media that is appreciably lighter than steel balls. The grind¬ing charge is fed to the mill to maintain a load and it does the grinding usually on a classified sand product of suitable size. If the grinding media is the same as the raw material being ground, this type of grinding is also called secondary autogenous grinding. Pebble milling was in common use in the gold mines of South Africa in the early 1900s. It is by far the oldest form of autogenous grinding. It may be used to grind crushed ores from a maximum size of about -% in. to all -10 µm. Pebble milling differs from "run of mine" grinding in many ways, but two big differences are: I) The ore itself is crushed to approximately t/4 in., or it may be further reduced to 8 or 10 mesh in a rod mill or fine crusher. 2) Then carefully screened ore of the correct size is placed in one or more stages of pebble mills to grind the ore to its desired final size. The media size is carefully selected to be the most efficient for the particular size reduction required in each stage. This is a precise practice, and pebble mills can be designed as easily and accu¬rately as can rod mills or ball mills by those skilled in the art. A pebble mill is a rotating cylinder in which the grinding media has been carefully sized for the job in hand. If the mill is doing coarse grinding, the media will be correspondingly large and the mill might be called a primary (or intermediate) pebble mill or a lump mill. If it is to do fine grinding, the media selected is proportionately smaller and the mill would be called a secondary or tertiary pebble mill. The media itself is normally rounded pebbles made from screened ore from the primary-crusher discharge. The charge could be rounded pebbles of the correct size removed from a primary autogenous mill, or the pebbles could be carefully sized gravel, sized beach pebbles, or sized flint pebbles. Usually the specific gravity of a pebble is from 35 to 55% of that of steel balls. It commonly varies from 2.66 to 4.2, depending on the specific gravity of the ore. Primary pebble mills, or lump mills, would be charged with pieces of rock up to 10 in. maximum and 5 in. minimum and would grind crusher discharge with a maximum size of 1/4 in. on hard ores and 3/8 in. on softer ores. Secondary pebble mills could be charged with pieces of rock screened on 4 x 4-in. square mesh and retained on 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 in. These mills would grind material with a top size of 8 to 10 mesh. Tertiary pebble mills could be charged with screened rock that would pass 3 x 3 in. and be retained on 1 x 1 in. and grind 35 to 48 mesh sands. Principles of Operation Media Size To operate a pebble mill efficiently it is imperative that great care be taken in screening the rock feed that is fed into the mill to round up into a range of pebble sizes that are suitable for grinding of the sands that are also being fed into the mill, having regard to the top size and the average size of such sands. Since most mill operators know from experience the correct size of steel balls to be used in a mill to handle different sizes of sand feed, it is convenient to relate the pebble size to a ball size. If the correct ball size is not known, it is relatively simple to conduct batch laboratory tests in 12- to 18-in. laboratory mills to determine the optimum size of steel ball. Also, Bond and others have published formulas for calculating the optimum ball size. When the correct size of the individual steel ball is known, then a pebble of the same weight will perform the same grinding if used in the proper size of mill and under the proper conditions, which will be defined later. This media size, as defined by the average weight of the individual pieces, is most important. The following tests will serve to clarify this point. Laboratory Tests Using Steel Balls or Pebbles. Several labora¬tory grinds were made to compare a given size and weight of steel ball with a pebble of the same weight but larger size, and of the same size but lighter weight. The following loads were used in the 12-in. laboratory mill: All 1 1/4-in. steel balls weighing 122 ± 10 g. All 1 3/4-in. pebbles weighing 123 ± 5 g. All 1 1/4-in. pebbles weighing 45 ± 3 g. To equalize capacity, the test with the steel balls was run only 34% as long as the tests with pebbles. In each case, 2,500 g of primary sands were ground at the optimum gravity for the media being tested at a speed 78 1/2 % of critical speed, and for 170, 340, and 680 revolu¬tions for the steel balls, and 500, 1,000, and 2,000 revolutions for the pebbles. The first test is summarized in Table 74 by showing the 80% passing size in microns for the feed and for each of the grinds. Two other tests are summarized in Table 75 showing the screen analyses

INTRODUCTION Shrinkage mining at Inco Ltd.'s Crean Hill mine can best be defined as a horizontal breasting method utilizing the broken ore for the mining floor and to provide wall support, with draw from a series of boxholes or draw¬points at the base of the stoping block. In choosing to shrink a given block of ore, the initial investigation centers on the ore configuration and grade, the expected ground conditions in the stoping area, the expected profit compared to alternative mining methods, the future production requirements, development lead time, the availability and type of equipment in the area, and the availability of experienced miners. These factors are weighed against other mining methods and shrinkage mining is chosen when the advantages outweigh the dis¬advantages. These will be discussed in more detail later. At Inco Ltd.'s Crean Hill mine, shrinkage mining makes up 17% of total mine production and is decreasing due to the advent of advanced blasthole techniques, notably in-the-hole drilling. Shrinkage is an adaptable mining method that is currently employed in narrow irregular ore zones, as undercuts for in-the-hole blast¬hole stopes, in ore bodies that do not extend from level to level, and in areas where quick production is required with a minimum of capital outlay or minimum develop¬ment. Two major types are currently in use which are classified on the basis of type of draw system employed. These are the utilization of load-haul-dump (LHD) equipment drawing from drawpoints, and the slusher and train method drawing from boxholes into a slusher trench and loading into a train. A third method being phased out is drawing from chutes directly into a train. In all three methods the actual stoping operation remains the same. In the initial planning of a mining block, the ore body is first located using an exploration diamond drill¬ing program. This is essentially done at a 130-m (400¬ft) spacing and it gives an indication of the amount of ore, grade of ore, the configuration of the ore body, as well as other geological features such as ground condi¬tions which will affect future mining. This drilling is done from an exploration drift 165 m (500 ft) long in the hanging wall and covers a vertical extent of 330 to 670 m (1000 to 2000 ft). However, these data are not accurate enough for detailed planning. When the de¬cision has been made to mine, a preliminary develop¬ment drill drift is driven in such a position that it can serve the dual purposes of allowing the ore body to be drilled off in detail, or of later serving as a haulage or access drift. Diamond drilling from this drift is usually on a 15-m (50-ft) grid spacing and gives adequate information for detailed planning. Utilizing the drill data, a decision is made on the mining type. For a shrinkage operation, the stoping block is ideally 49 m (150 ft) in length and a maximum of 13 m (40 ft) in width. Lengths of 65 m (200 ft) are considered a practical maximum because of the length of time the back of the stope remains open during the min¬ing of a cut. A minimum length of 13 m (40 ft) is used because the amount of time spent in opening a new cut increases in comparison with the total stoping time. The maximum width of 13 m (40 ft) is used because ex¬perience with the ground indicates that generally stope backs tend to be unstable over greater widths. However, widths of 33 m (100 ft) have been mined. A minimum width of 5 m (15 ft) is used to allow an effective draw, but in unusual cases, a width of 3 m (10 ft) has been mined successfully. The dip of the ore should not be less than 1.04 rad (60°). Angles flatter than this will not pull properly resulting in inefficient mining because of ore hang-ups on the footwall side of the stope and the need for large stagings on the hanging wall. In considering shrinkage, mining ground conditions play an important role. Strong shearing, cross faulting, or dikes are avoided. These usually cause dangerous mining conditions and an alternative safer mining method which will give adequate support to these adverse ground conditions is employed. Production requirements are taken into considera¬tion when planning a shrinkage mining program. In it¬self, shrinkage mining is capable of producing ore in a relatively short time with little capital development. If quick production is required, this method can produce ore rapidly as all that is required is that the draw system be completed and the miners with jacklegs and stopers produce a limited amount of ore. The obvious disadvan¬tage is that not all the ore broken can be pulled from the stope immediately. However, a mining horizon with sev¬eral shrinkage stopes in different stages of production can adequately maintain scheduled tonnage require¬ments, the cycle being stopes under development, stopes actively mining, and stopes completed and pulling. When the decision has been made to use shrinkage mining in a given block, the haulage and draw system is driven. The proximity of the orepass system dictates whether the system is to be a LHD operation or a slusher trench operation. If the orepass system is in close prox¬imity to the stoping block, LHD equipment is employed because of its ability to operate efficiently over short haulage distances. A long tram to the orepass usually dictates a slusher trench operation with haulage by train. Internal orepass systems are used effectively with LHD equipment with a load-out and retramming taking place on a lower horizon. In addition, stoping blocks in older areas of the mine are developed track because of the capital cost involved in converting an existing level to trackless mining. DRIFT DEVELOPMENT USING LHD EQUIPMENT The haulage drift for a draw system using LHD equipment is driven parallel to the ore body in the foot¬wall at a sufficient distance to allow an 11.5-m (35-ft) drawpoint to be driven into the ore (Fig. 1). The actual position of the drift depends entirely upon the ore con¬figuration and the drift size depends on the equipment to be used. Drift sizes of 4.6 x 4.1 m (14 x 121/2 ft) for an St-4 and 3.8 x 3.6 m (111/2 x 11 ft) for an St-2 meet company and government clearance standards and allow sufficient space to accommodate a ventilation pipe. [INTRODUCTION] The significance of gamma exposure to uranium miners has been recognized only in the last few years. Most ore deposits which have been underground mined, were 1% or less U308. Full-time mining of this grade ore can result in exposure exceeding 1 Rem per year. Several companies in Saskatchewan are planning to mine recently discovered ore bodies which contain ore pods in excess of 10% U308. The purpose of this paper is to present dose data which can be used to estimate gamma exposure from high-grade ore deposits, and to present mining techniques which will minimize miner exposure. [Dose Estimates] When one has a point source of radiation, the conventional laws of isotropic emission and the fall of dose with square of the distance, make dose calculations relatively easy. However, if one has an area source of infinite thickness, the assumption must be made that a uniform gamma flux is being emitted from all faces of the source (Figure 1). Dose from gamma emission would fall off only due to air attenuation up to such a distance at which the source can be considered to be a point source (usually 10 times the largest dimension of the source). For short distances, such as to the cab of ore-moving equipment, the dose reduction would be negligible. Assumptions: 1) Radium and gamma-emitting daughters are in secular equilibrium with uranium. 2) All gamma radiation is emitted from radium and its daughters. 3) Average gamma energy of 0.8 MeV. 4) Uranium ore has a linear attenuation coefficient of 0.212 cm-1, similar to that of Si02(sand). 5) Uranium ore density of 3.0 gm/cm3. 6) One curie of radium emits 6.84 x 1010 photon/sec(l). 7) One percent uranium ore contains 1 x 10-8 Ci/cm3 of radium. 8) Each MeV of 0.8 MeV photon results in a dose of 2.10[ ]10-3 mRem/hr. per MeV/cm2 -sec. 1) 9) Minimum ore depth 100 cm. 10) Linear attenuation coefficient instant for radium gamma of 0.374 cm -1 [ ] The photon flux from a radioactive slab is computed as follows: [Flux = photon/cm3 3(1) 2u S] [where, us is the linear absorption coefficient of s the source (uranium ore).] Thus, 1% uranium ore, in the form of an infinite slab, emits 1613 photon/cm2-sec, which results in a dose rate of 2.71 mRem/hr. INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY World mineral trade during 1960 to 1984 has shown substantial changes both in value and tonnage. Although fuel commodities dominated total mineral trade during this period, this paper will focus attention primarily on nonfuel minerals. Brazil and Australia, modest producers of iron ore in 1960, have become dominant producers and exporters, together accounting for about half of major iron ore exports in 1984, far surpassing traditional export suppliers such as Sweden. Australia has also become the largest producer and trader of bauxite and alumina, and worldwide alumina trade has increased at the expense of bauxite trade. Similarly, shipments of ferroalloys have increased more than shipments of ores such as those of chromium and manganese. Canada, retaining its first rank in world export of zinc, has become also the leading source of potash and sulfur in world trade, and South Africa has been the dominant factor in chromite, manganese and their respective ferroalloys. Developing countries' share of world copper trade has increased, with Chile maintaining first rank, but developed industrialized countries have continued to dominate production and trade of lead and zinc. Phosphate, sulfur, and potash have been the principal crude nonmetallic minerals traded worldwide. Looking to the near future, dramatic increases in export of iron ore, phosphate, potash and sulfur are not envisaged. Bauxite exports will continue to decline relative to alumina but at a slower rate than in the recent past. Zinc concentrate will continue to be exported but lead will be traded more as metal than as concentrate. For iron and steel, there will be some production shift from traditional producers to certain developing countries and recently industrializing developing countries such as Brazil, India, the Republic of Korea, and Taiwan. In the following sections dealing with specific commodities, it should be understood that information is presented only on the major forms of each commodity that move in trade, and only for a selected group of countries for each commodity or major form of each commodity. Thus, totals shown or mentioned generally represent only the totals of figures presented here and do not include estimates for minor forms of material or for countries that are not listed. However, the data provided is regarded as sufficiently complete to reflect major patterns and trends, and exclusions are there- fore not seen as affecting conclusions that may be drawn from the material provided. FUEL AND NONFUEL TRADE Values of Fuel and Nonfuel Trade The value of world export trade in major mineral commodities (ores, concentrates and scrap, crude minerals, iron and steel, nonferrous metals, nonmetallic minerals and mineral fuels) in 1983, the latest year for which comprehensive data are available, was reported by the United Nations in May 1985 to have totaled over 514 billion current U.S. dollars (Table 1). This was 79% of the historic record high of nearly $649 billion ,current dollars set in 1980, but almost 18 times the current dollar value reported for 1960. [1/] The value of these 1983 exports in constant 1960 dollars was $164 billion (Table 2), only 66% of the record 1980 high of almost $250 billion, and only about 5.7 times the 1960 dollar level.

The Pb-Zn-Ag deposits within the Lower and Middle Paleozoic strata of central Colorado (Leadville, Gilman, Aspen, and others) occur principally in Late Mississippian karst-solution features within dolomites and, to a lesser extent, limestones. Several un- conformities within the Devonian and Mississippian carbonate rocks and the subregional dolomitization of the Leadville (Mississippian) Formation that occurred during the Late Mississippian resulted from recurrent uplift of elements of the Ancestral Sawatch, Gore, and Front Range areas within central Colorado. Uplift of these areas also strongly influenced the details of the extensive karst topography that developed during the Late Mississippian. In particular, uplift of the Sawatch Range area caused paleovalleys from 300-600 ft deep to form on the karst landscape. The pattern of karst-solution caverns, sinkholes, cutters, channelways, and breccia-rubble zones was strongly controlled by incision of surface drainages and the strong northeast-trending Mississippian joint system. These subterranean karst-solution features and breccia-rubble soil [ ] zones are the primary controls of the location of the Pb-Zn-Ag ore deposits in these rocks. In the Leadville and Aspen districts, the deeply incised paleovalleys occur immediately adjacent to the principal areas of mineralization. Pennsylvanian deposition of a thick terrigenous and evaporite sequence occurred within central Colorado in response to actively subsiding extensional basins and adjacent high-relief uplift areas. Hot brines developed within the Pennsylvanian strata, migrated laterally to, and moved upward vertically along, basin- margin faults during continued Pennsylvanian subsidence and deposition. These metal-rich brines migrated into karst-solution features within the Lower and Middle Paleozoic dolomites and limestones, principally within the Leadville Formation, in basin- edge uplifted locales where the Pb-Zn-Ag minerals were precipitated. Field relationships, mineral assemblages and paragenesis, fluid-inclusion data, and isotope studies suggest that the metals and brines were derived within the Pennsylvanian sedimentary sequence and that the ore minerals were deposited under different temperatures and at different depths from deposit to deposit. Chemical reaction with the carbonate cave sediment and wallrock, cooling of fluid temperatures, and mixing with meteoric ground waters were the probable combined causes of mineral deposition in the karst-solution features. Late Cretaceous-Tertiary intrusive activity has subsequently modified some of the primary Pb-Zn-Ag deposits in local areas.

"The topic of ground movements in Germany has been studied extensively in the past, especially in the field of active mines. The active hard coal mines were finally shut down in 2018 in Germany and lignite mining is expected to take place only until 2038. The so-called long-term liabilities of the mine operators in Germany include, among other things, the long-term guarantee of stability and thus the monitoring of ground motion.So far, the economic use of underground mining in Germany was mainly the supply of raw materials. In the future, the underground storage of compressed air, methane, or hydrogen will play an important role in renewable energy supply and climate change. Therefore, underground storage space will become more important and spatial planning is essential to ensure availability of safe underground openings for the various options of environmentally friendly energy storage.However, this renewed usage of underground openings may also bring new and sometimes unknown challenges of geomechanical influence. On the one hand, the aftermath of hard coal and lignite mining will be an increasing challenge in mining subsidence engineering. On the other hand, new possibilities due to underground spatial planning may lead to subsidence and/or heaving of the upper surface.INTRODUCTIONBoth hard coal and lignite have a long tradition in Germany. The Prosper Haniel mine in the Ruhr area was closed at the end of 2018 after 150 years, which signalled the end of hard coal production in Germany. Lignite mining still takes place in the Central German, Lausitz, and Rhineland districts. However, lignite mining in Germany is expected to be phased out gradually by 2038 (MDR, 2019). With the closure of these mines, however, mining damage is not over. The long-term consequences of mining, which extend far beyond the closure of the mines, are associated with the liability and responsibility of the individual mining companies. The so-called eternity burdens on the mining company continue to apply. In the field of lignite production, the discontinuation of dewatering and the resulting possible elevations of the surface will be a relevant topic for the future of mine surveying. The same applies to the hard coal mines, which are partially flooded in Germany and therefore require extensive monitoring of soil movements in the future.The discontinuation of energy from hard coal and lignite calls for a change in the energy mix. With the renewable energy revolution in Germany, the focus is on a sustainable and environmentally compatible climate and energy policy based on renewable energies. Sustainable use of the subsoil, both natural and anthropogenically produced cavities, will play an essential role in the objectives of this policy. For example, disused mine cavities can be used to store electricity from renewable energy sources. (Umwelt Bundesamt, 2018) These functions will again cause classical ground movements such as subsidence and uplift, but will also bring new challenges for the mine surveyor. Challenges can be underground cavity exploration in inaccessible areas or legal aspects of underground competition."

PPC (Public Power Corporation) operates a new power plant at the South-West part of Crete. Recently the extension of the Power Plant started. ATHENA SA the main contractor of the project assigned to EXORIXI SA the implementation of a blast vibration monitoring program and prevention-evaluation of risks caused by construction blastings inside or very close to the operating part of the power station. The blasting parameters and characteristic elements that had been evaluated, the measures that had been taken and materialized, the overall risk management and the results of the whole program are presented in this paper.
