Synthetic indium-bearing zinc ferrite (IBZF) was mechanically activated by a tumbling mill. Subsequently, the behavior and kinetics of leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF in sulfuric acid solution were investigated. The results demonstrate that the tumbling ball milling enhances the leaching reactivity of IBZF and increases the zinc and indium extractions. The reaction temperature and H2SO4 concentration have an important effect on leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF. The kinetic model -ln(1-x) = kt was used to describe the kinetics of leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF and to calculate the kinetic parameters. The tumbling ball milling causes a decrease in activation energy and reaction order, which indicates that the dissolution of IBZF after mechanical activation by a tumbling mill becomes less sensitive to temperature and H2SO4 concentration. For the zinc leaching, the activation energy decreases from 73.9 to 70.3 kJ/mol and the reaction order decreases from 0.72 to 0.70. For indium leaching, the activation energy decreases from 78.1 to 73.5 kJ/mol and the reaction order decreases from 0.82 to 0.69. It is found that the dissolution rates of the initial IBZF and activated IBZF are controlled by surface chemical reactions.

The rare earth element (REE) industry has sought to develop ore deposits where geologic processes have produced mineralized zones with commercially attractive concentrations. These deposits are extremely uncommon, particularly in the United States. Given the criticality of these materials and the need for a sustainable domestic supply, the current research seeks to leverage the generation and treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) as an autogenous process that can lead to concentrated REE resources.

The feasibility of chalcopyrite-pyrite separation in the flotation of a chalcopyritic copper ore, at reduced surface tensions regulated by methanol, was investigated. It was found that with methanol dosages from 0.5% to 1.5% v/ v, the chalcopyrite might be effectively separated from the pyrite, without use of other flotation reagents and pH regulators. However, under this simple condition, the chalcopyrite recovery was only around 50%, recommending the use of other reagents to reinforce the collector action. Low dosages of different collectors were tested, including SF-323 (Shell Float), S-6588 and S-7251 (Cytec), and S-701 (Molycop). Very promising results were obtained with low dosages of the collector S-701 and 1% v/v of methanol in the pulp, which evaluated against a reference test, gave similar copper recovery, higher Mo recovery and higher depression of pyrite. Consequently, this is an alternative process which does not require the use of lime to depress pyrite.

A 14.6 cm (5.75 in.) diameter by 1.83 m (6 ft) tall laboratory-size column is used in flotation of Florida phosphates of different feed sizes. In this paper, the effects of different parameters on the flotation efficiency of coarse particles (belt feed, -1.4 + 0.5 mm, i.e., 14 x 35 mesh) under negative bias are discussed. Parameters included collector dosage, frother type and dosage, and conditioning water, which contained a residual concentration of collector. Flotation tests were performed using statistical designs. The results strongly suggest that flotation performance is dependent on the used combination of reagents. Interactions between frothers and the collector and, consequently, the flotation efficiency were found to be dependent on frother type and presence or absence of conditioning water. Under the negative bias, an excellent recovery of more than 98% of phosphate was achieved in concentrates of high grade (above 31% P205) from such feed of coarse particles.

The lining of a mine shaft is one of the most important considerations in the planning and operation of an underground mine. Generally, the function of a shaft lining is to preserve the shaft opening in a manner compatible with the expected mine life and -the other shaft operations. Where shafts are the only means of surface access in a mine, they also serve a critical function for the safety of the entire underground operation. Routine repairs and maintenance work on the shaft linings are only possible in stable strata with only minor interruptions to the shaft operations.

Maintenance of a constant load setting throughout longwall support units and selection of the proper initial bearing capacity depending on the type of roof strata are the basic factors that ensure good performance of roof support in a longwall. These requirements can only be met by hydraulic support. The greatest advantage of hydraulic support is achieved when uniform pressure is imposed on the roof throughout the length of the longwall. Such support, however, is provided only if each of the support units acts with the same force against the roof, i.e., has the same setting load. In such cases, the roof behaves like a uniform plate without bending and shearing stresses, thereby ensuring an undisturbed structure. Without a positive set value system, achieving an equal setting load for all units of the longwall support is impossible. Due to alterations of the feed line pressure of support units as well as some reasons related to man's psychology, operators extend the height at different setting loads. This produces nonuniform roof stress, and disturbs the structure. Consequently, the roof usually cracks. The author has developed a positive set value system, which is described in this Technical Note. Selection of the setting load Two pressure values in the feed lines are usually applied in longwall hydraulic systems. Lightweight support is fed by 25 MPa (250 bar) liquid, while heavy duty units receive a nominal pressure of 31.5 MPa (315 bar). Such pressure is required not only for the props but also to power the adjust¬ment jacks and the advancing ram. If the feed pressure is too low, there will be difficulty in shifting the unit despite the inversion system of the advancing rams. On the other hand, for many roof types, the feed pressure often appears to be too high when applied as the setting load pressure. An excessive setting load acts too strongly against the roof, crushing weak strata close to the roof. The author has recognized a case where an excessive setting load destroyed not only the nearby roof strata but also the strata above a 2-m (6.6-ft) sandstone layer. In addition, an excessive setting load relieves the side¬walls, increasing the resistance when using cutting machines. As a result, the yield of coarse coal is diminished, and increased fines dominate in the final product, lowering its economic value. As indicated, selection of the proper setting load, depend¬ing on the mining and geological conditions of the extracted seam, is extremely important. In some mines, measures applied to prevent disturbances include reduction of the feed line pressure by adjusting the feed pump valve. The disadvantage accompanying reduced feed line pressure is more difficult operation in advancing the ram. Due to the reduced feed line pressure, the force of the advancing ram is much lower than the designed value. Other designs suggest using a third feed line. However, installation of supplementary valves on the support units is required, a time-consuming and expensive procedure. The disadvantages of the powered supports are eliminated by a system designed by the author. So far, such a method of setting load control has not been used in any type of support. Setting load control unit The designed positive valve set for prop loading and the setting load control correspond to existing control systems for hydraulic powered support. The layout of the unit connected to the hydraulic prop control is presented in Fig. 1. The unit is marked LIDS. It incorporates three valves that may operate separately or connected. Valve A automatically opens and closes with liquid flow in the prop feed circuit. The valve is opened when the canopy touches the roof and closed when the support unit is withdrawn. Valve B serves as the setting load control. Valve C automatically opens and closes the flow in the line connecting the under-piston space of E to the prop F with the separator G. The valve block of each support prop is marked BZ. The UDS unit is connected by the hydraulic lines to the F prop control circuit. A valve is connected by H to pressure line J and by K to the G separator. In the UDS-3 version, line L is connected to M, linking the over-piston space of F prop with the G separator. Valve B is linked with valve A by a connector; it is also connected to the under-piston space E of prop F by line P. Valve C is fixed between lines K and P, connecting space E of prop F with the separator G. When setting the support, the liquid flows from line J through separator G, the BZ valve, and valve C to the space E of prop F. When reaching the roof with the canopy, valve A is opened and C closes. In this way it is impossible for the operator to cause the liquid pressure in space E of prop F to reach the level of line J. The prop pressure is set by valve B of the UDS unit. When withdrawing the support, valve C is automatically opened and A closed. Three UDS units have been fabricated and are designated

Banded Iron Formations (BIF) are sedimentary rock formations ranging in age from 0.8 to 3.8 billion years and consist of alternating layers of silica and iron. The thickness of the alternating layers varies between and within deposits, with this lithology forming approximately two-thirds of South Africa’s future low-grade hematite resources. The production costs for South African iron ore producers are approximately double that of the largest iron ore producers, namely, Brazil and Australia. This in conjunction with volatile commodity prices, necessitated a cost-sensitive beneficiation strategy for low-grade hematite to sustain the industry and extend life of mine. A BIF sample grading at 44% Fe and comprising predominantly of hematite and quartz with minor amounts of magnetite and goethite was subjected to three fines gravity processing routes to establish the amenability of this sample to beneficiation. To provide flexibility for iron ore producers who still have high-grade resources available, two product grades were considered, namely a 60% Fe product for further blending or a 63% Fe product for direct sales.

Experiments have been carried out to determine the efficacy of bubble column flocculation. An acid-base neutralization method was used to determine the mixing time in a 0.064 m x l.5 m bubble column equipped with a Mott porous sparger. The mixing times decreased as the tracer injection point approached the gas sparger. Preliminary flocculation experiments on two clay samples were carried out. The effects of frother addition and air flow rate are presented and discussed.

The adsorption of oleate at the surface of titanium dioxide from aqueous solutions was examined by Fourier transform infrared (FT -IR.) spectroscopy using a germanium internal reflection element coated with a thin film of TiO2. This thin film, with a thickness of 100-200 A, was deposited on the surface of a germanium single crystal by RFIDC magnetron reactive sputtering. It was found that significant adsorption of oleate from a 0.02-0.03 mM aqueous solution on the surface of TiO2 thin film occurs at neutral pH, from about pH=5.5 to pH=7.7. Adsorption of oleate at the surface of the amorphous TiO2 thin film appeared to be reversible, involving soap-acid dimers.

This paper deals with some aspects of concrete construction in remote locations and/or cold climates. The writer's experience covers 25 years in construction in western and Central Canada. I will bring forth some pertinent observations and cost facts learned from this experience. Let us start by saying that there is nothing more important than preplanning the entire project. By this I mean the production of the engineering design, working drawings, soliciting of prices and ordering of all equipment and contractors work, the delivery of all equipment and all onsite work. All of this should be placed on a master schedule, preferably a C.P.M. We have been using C.P M. Scheduling for all of our work for 5 years and have found it in-valuable. This preliminary schedule will show initial items of work and target dates. After main equipment orders are placed and deliveries confirmed, the construction schedule can be revised to include manpower and construction equipment requirements. From this information the size of camp is determined. This, of course, must be ordered several months ahead. The manpower schedule can be broken into trades to tell us the number of men of each trade required at any time. This is important in helping to determine where the men must come from and whether or not any incentive is needed to get them. The schedule will also point out if it is impossible to get the project closed in before winter becomes too severe unless overtime is worked or the project is started in early spring. In most parts of Canada cold weather starts in October and lasts through April. A common term of reference has been to wait for the frost to come out of the ground before starting work in the spring. A highly respected coal mining company in West Virginia updated their stacker belt by switching to a new magnetic coupling. The savings they achieved are the subject of this paper. A steep incline and heavy belt loads are powered by a dual drive arrangement. The magnetic couplings were custom designed for complete fluid coupling retrofit and easy installation in the field. Maintenance personnel updated the drives in just a few hours. Over the following several weeks, adjustments were made to the couplings for optimum performance. Cost savings are found in reduced down time, no coupling maintenance, and equipment protection.

The intersections of numerous joint sets at the surface of tunnels of the Abu-Tartour project in Egypt create blocks of irregular shape and size in the rock mass. Although most of these blocks are unable to move into the free space of the tunnel, a few key blocks are capable of such movement. In addition, as soon as they move, some restrained blocks will be liberated. The aim of this work is to find the removable key blocks of the walls, floor, roof and corners of a portion of the tunnel under jointed surface rocks and then determine the best tunnel direction.

I have to express my surprise and must send a note of warning concerning the use of polyurethane foam as described in a paper by R.N. Torbin and R.F. Kovar, entitled "Innovative Shaft Lining Method," published in your February 1989 edition. In September, 1986, 177 miners lost their lives when they were exposed to fumes downwind from a fire in a tunnel lined with polyurethane foam. Whilst polyurethane exhibits reasonable fire retardent properties in small-scale tests, mass use in a tubular configuration, exacerbated by the furnace effect of cross-radiation, can lead to a rapid, uncontrollable conflagration.

Because mineral matter is finely distributed within the matrix, Nigerian Labia coal is nonresponsive to conventional processing techniques. However, testing has shown that Lafia coal can be upgraded by selective oil agglormation. The optimum oil concentration was found to be 10 mL of paraffin per 25 g of coal. A product containing 6% ash and 1.9% sulfur was obtained with a yield of 90%. Optimum results were achieved with a grinding; time of from 2.5 and 3 hrs, which produced a 98% -400 mesh product. However, further grinding wars found to be deleterious to the process. Also, high pH adversely affected concentrate yields. Utilizing kerosene as a bridging liquid, a product containing 4% ash and 0.33% sulfur was achieved at a natural pH of 6.3 with a yield of 85%. At pH 9 and 10, a product containing 4.5% ash was achieved with a yield of >90%.

The selection of roasting technology is a complex task which is primarily dependent on the ore mineralogy. Key roasting parameters are directly linked to mineralogical characteristics of the feed and vary considerably between different ore types even in the same deposit. In addition to sulfide refractoriness, other refractory conditions frequently exist. Together with various mineralogical features of the feed, they may complicate roasting testwork and process design. For most roasting scenarios, the critical economic factors are gold recovery, capital cost and environmental performance. This paper will show how these economic factors are influenced by the mineralogical ore characteristics.

Respirable crystalline silica (RCS) found in dust generated by various mining processes is an important occupational hazard in the underground coal-mining industry. Exposure can lead to disabling and incurable diseases, including coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), silicosis and lung cancer [1,2]. Clusters of rapidly progressive CWP have been observed in the Appalachian regions of eastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia, and recent cases have been generally more severe and showing more rapid progression. CWP is approximately four times as common among long-tenured underground coal miners in central Appalachia than long-tenured underground miners in the rest of the United States, and 20.6 percent of long-tenured underground miners in central Appalachia were suffering from the disease as of 2017.

The use of a woven wire-mesh screen as part of a flooded-bed dust-scrubbing system is popular in the underground coal mining industry. It is used in combination with a demister (mist eliminator) to remove dust from the dust-laden air. A study was conducted to measure the pressure drop across a flooded-bed, wire-mesh screen at different airflow rates in one-phase (dry) and two-phase (wet) conditions. Two empirical relationships between pressure drop and air velocity were developed for dry and wet conditions, respectively. In both cases, the form of the empirical relationships was found to be similar to relationships given by Sabri Ergun for high velocity, non-Darcy, single- and multi-phase flow through porous media. The experiments were repeated on a reduced-scale model of the wire-mesh screen, and the pressure-velocity relationships obtained from the full-scale prototype experiments were tested. The test results show validation of the full-scale empirical formulae on the small-scale model with an insignificant variation. This paper presents the empirical equations for pressure drop across the wire-mesh screen in dry and wet conditions. Researchers can use these equations as a tool to predict total pressure drops for wire-mesh screens of different scale sizes.

Introduction Spontaneous combustion in coal mining is recognized as a major hazard in terms of safety and economics. A survey by Olaf (1979) revealed that 80% of coal mine fires were caused by spontaneous combustion. Modern mining methods demand a high capital investment. Closure of a working face may then result in a huge loss. Even a short production interruption can prove expensive. Spontaneous combustion may also produce lethal amounts of carbon monoxide, thus posing a serious threat to the health and safety of underground miners. The worldwide recession in the early 1980s resulted in a number of mine closures and production cutbacks. So large stockpiles at mine sites were common. Experience has shown that stockpile fires are difficult to extinguish. Critical factors influencing spontaneous combustion There is no simple method of predicting whether a particular mining method applied to a specific coal seam will result in spontaneous combustion. Under favorable conditions of heat accumulation, spontaneous combustion can occur with any type of coal. It is known that subbituminous coals are more susceptible compared to low volatility bituminous coals, and that a high ratio of exinite increases the risk. However, the inherent moisture content of the coal and the exposed surface area may be more significant. Actual mining and ventilation conditions also strongly influence susceptibility. In practice, the experience gained with the mining method applied to a particular type of coal seam must be carefully evaluated with respect to the factors responsible for spontaneous combustion. Feng, Chakravorty, and Cochrane (1973) summarized the critical factors influencing spontaneous combustion in coal mines (Table 1). Prevention methods and strategies Mine layout is the most important factor preventing spontaneous heating. Working districts should be designed so that a particular section can be isolated on short notice without affecting production in others. Sites for preparatory seals should be identified and marked during planning. With coal seams that are highly susceptible to spontaneous combustion, the retreat method of working is preferred. This is because the gob is not subjected to a large difference in ventilation pressure. Coal pillars should be designed to resist excessive crush. The panel system of working is preferred, particularly for mining coals susceptible to spontaneous combustion. The size of each panel is calculated based on the incubation period and the rate of extraction. Controlling air leakage is also important for controlling spontaneous combustion. This is usually achieved by minimizing ventilation pressure difference, proper siting of doors, and avoiding unnecessary stopping and starting of fans. Air leakage is also reduced by sealant coating, injection of cements in cracks and crevices, and by maintaining good gateside packs. Application of inhibitors to control spontaneous combustion met with limited success. Chamberlain and Hall (1973) concluded that borate solution or Montan powder sprayed in the gob area or infused into a low rank coal would reduce the possibility of spontaneous combustion. Early detection of heating Significant research is being conducted worldwide to develop methods for early detection of heating. Monitoring combustion products during the early stage of heating is the most suitable method for detecting spontaneous combustion. The major gaseous products resulting from low temperature oxidation of coal are carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and water vapor. In mining operations, carbon dioxide monitoring is considered unsuitable because there are sources other than spontaneous heating from which this gas may originate. The effects of the operating parameters of media filling ratio, solid mass fraction, grinding media size and grinding time on the stirred media milling of talc were studied. The findings were assessed based on the product particle size (d50, d10), surface area (Sw) and energy consumption (Em). Furthermore, after determining the optimum grinding conditions, Box-Behnken statistical design was used to determine the effect of parameter interactions on the d50 size. The media filling ratio significantly affects d50 size decrease compared with solid mass fraction and grinding time. The minimum d50 size was also achieved under optimum grinding conditions.

With the world’s ever-expanding push to expand technological capabilities, the need for specialized materials including rare earth elements has exploded. One source found in the USA is bastnaesite, a rare earth bearing fluorocarbonate mineral, currently mined at the Mountain Pass Mine in California. To increase production, it is essential to optimize existing processes and create new ones to better utilize current resources. Therefore, a US Department of Energy Critical Materials Institute sponsored research program was carried out at the Kroll Institute for Extractive Metallurgy to expand the fundamental understanding of the industrial bastnaesite concentrate leaching system. With the help of prior knowledge, thermodynamic calculations and design of experimentation based lab testing, a novel single-stage hydrochloric leach system was created to optimize the rare earth extraction from bastnaesite. Historically, the existing industrial process has utilized a two-stage leach system involving a high-temperature hydrochloric acid leach with liquid solid separations followed by a caustic crack stage of the leach residues. A series of single-stage leach experiments were run by reacting locked cycle flotation concentrates with hydrochloric acid to test common leaching parameters. The results of these patent pending single-stage tests have shown rare earth recoveries significantly higher than reported recoveries of historic two-stage caustic crack processes, all while decreasing the equipment required and the type and amount of reagents needed.
