Quantification of size, shape and composition has been one of the more difficult areas for those concerned with fine particle processing of coal.' Image analysers fed by optical microscopes and by scanning electron microscopes possessing backscatter detectors and energy dispersive facilities now offer techniques to improve the speed and precision of previous methods. This paper discusses the methodology and procedural difficulties associated with the microanalysis of coal. Photographs show display quality on the image analyser monitor and the equipment mentioned. Data illustrating several of the procedures are included. The major portion of data for design and operation of plant for fine particle processing depends on information regarding size, shape and composition of granular material. The lower limits of particle sizes become more important as lower grade deposits are mined. Because of the trends towards treatment of finer materials, the use of image analysis offers advantages in time, effort and accuracy. As energy becomes more critical, the above applies especially to coal processing. The Zeiss Microvideomat 2, a leading member of the second generation instruments, is now available for image analysis. There is a precision television scanning system with monochrome camera, display, control panel and central processor (see Figure 1).

Marine black-shale samples of Paleozoic age in the western United States that exceed 10 wt % organic carbon contain as much as 5000 ppm vanadium, 5000 ppm molybdenum, 1300 ppm nickel, 600 pprn cobalt, 16 ppm silver, 11,700 ppm chromium, 18,800 pprn zinc, 280 pprn cadmium, and 350 ppm selenium. Depositional set- tings include: (I) continental-rise and marginal- ocean basins, (2) continental-shelf and foreland basins, and (3) cratonic-platform embayments. Most of these metalliferous organic-rich shales have not been examined for resources because rapid weathering and poor exposures preclude easy sampling of unoxidized rock necessary to determine actual concentration and residence of indigenous metals. Generally, when interval thickness is considered, the marine black shales of Paleozoic age in the western United States are richer in metals than marine upper Paleozoic black shales in the eastern United States.

The diameters of sessile drops have been found to increase linearly with time in five reacting binary metal systems. The spreading rates of the drops are markedly dependent on temperature and on prior alloying of the solid with the lower melting point metal, hut are independent of the drop volume, wetting atruosphere , solid-surface roughness, and prior alloying of the drop with the substrate metal. A mechanism has been suggested that relates the linear-spreading rate to lateral diffusion of the liquid-metal atoms into the solid at the drop edge. An Arrhenius- type equation has been derived that describes the temperature dependence 0) the spreading rate, and although the agreement between the actual and the predicted pre-exponen-tial terms is poor that between the activation energies is excellent and the variation in the spreading rate of copper on Ni-Cu alloys produced by different extents of alloying can be predicted with considerable accuracy. CHEMICAL interactions frequently change the wetting behavior of solid-liquid systems causing, for example, "secondary spreading1 of sessile drops beyond the size defined by the surface and interfacial tensions of the unreacted components. The kinetics of the contact-angle decreases associated with this spreading are similar for many systems, but few studies have been made with the objective of determining whether the similarities are a reflection of a common mechanism. Some workers2,3 have assumed the secondary spreading is controlled by changes in the liquid surface and liquid-solid interfacial tensions and hence by the composition of the liquid, and contact-angle changes measured by the vertical-plate technique have been used to follow the course of liquid-solid chemical reactions.4 Other processes that have been invoked to explain these time-dependent changes in specific systems include the removal of adsorbed gas from the liquid-solid interface.5 penetration of containment layers on the solid Surface,6 interdiffusion,1,7 reori-entation of the solid surface into a wettable configuration: vapor-phase transport of the liquid onto the solid in advance of the drop,9 and, from vertical-plate studies. capillary flow between oxide layers and the solid surface.10 One of the reasons for the profuseness of these suggestions may be the complexity of the contact-angle change kinetics. However, in an analysis of secondary spreading gold and copper on UC,11 it was found that the diameter of the contact area between the sessile drop and the solid surface showed a simple linear increase with time although contact-angle changes were more complex. To check whether the linearity was merely fortuitous! additional exploratory work was conducted with four reacting metal-metal systems: Au on Ni. Cu on Ni, Cu on Fe, and Ag on Au. Linear spreading was observed in every case even though the kinetics of the contact-angle changes were complex. A further detailed study of the kinetics of linear spreading of five reacting metal-metal systems has been made with the object of determining the mechanism involved. The influence of variables such as temperature, drop volume. and the initial composition of the drop on the linear-spreading rate has been measured and compared with those predicted by a number of possible mechanisms. The systems employed in this study (Cu and Au on Ni and Pt, and Ag on Au) were selected because of the availability of potentially relevant chemical and physical property data. the simplicity of their phase diagrams at the wetting temperatures, and the ease of experimentation. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The purities of the metals used in the study were: copper, 99.9 pct; gold. 99.96 pct; nickel, 99.2 pct; platinum 99.99 pct; and silver, 99.999 pct. The wetting tests were performed in a split tantalum tube vacuum resistance furnace of a conventional design. The furnace element was held vertically and was 1 $ in. in diam and 6 in, long. Viewing ports were provided in the water-cooled chamber to enable the specimens to be observed in both the horizontal and vertical planes. The temperature in the hot zone of the furnace could be held at 1500" i 5°C for an indefinite time. The surfaces of the solid-plaque metals were ground flat on Microcut paper and both the sessile drop and substrate metals were ultrasonically cleaned in methyl alcohol prior to their insertion in the furnace. After loading, the furnace was pumped down to a pressure of 2 x 10-5 mm of mercury and degassed for 30 min at 900° to 950°C. The temperature was then increased at more than 100°C per min to that used in the wetting test. The vacuum at the wetting temperature was better than 5 x 10-5 mm of mercury. Dewetting and retraction of the drop on cooling did not occur and the contact-area diameters, therefore, were measured after solidification with a vernier traveling microscope. The diameters quoted later are arithmetic means of ten measurements. The standard error of the mean never exceeded 3 pct and was often less than 1 pct.

Control of artesian ground water has played an important role in the development of Texas Gulf Sulphur's phosphate mining venture in eastern North Carolina. To facilitate dry mining methods, 60 million gpd of fresh water is pumped through wells from a limestone aquifer underlying the uniform flat-lying ore section. Hydrologic information revealed from pumping tests has been used in successfully developing a depressurizing system. Computer assistance is used to plan well patterns. High volume pumping has lowered water levels in water wells over a large area in the Coastal Plain without detrimental effects on water quality in the aquifer. Cooperative effort between mining firms will be required to control the ground water as new mines are developed in the district. An intricate observation -well system is monitored regularly over the wide area of pumping effect to ensure that gradient reversals have not caused salt water encroachment.

An unusually large number of crystals of magnetite obtained in the exploitation of a deposit of magnetic iron-ore of remarkable purity, encouraged the preparation of this paper, and its presentation at this time, that the matter might go on record in the Transactions. To make this record more complete, a preliminary statement is offered concerning the district and locality in which the ore is found. To the northeastern portion of the State of New York the United States is indebted for a large percentage of the iron-ore which has assisted in developing the resources and industries of the nation. As early as 1804, iron-ore was mined between Lake Champlain and the Adirondack mountains, and this district has since been an important and continuous contributor to our iron-ore supply. INTRODUCTION The surface processes involved in preparing ores for flotation and for operations depending on their flocculation/dispersion characteristics * vary widely in agitation dependence. Most of the reagents used for these purposes are added to grinding circuits, pump sumps, launders, or directly to flotation cells with the turbulent flow conditions usually adequate both for mixing reagents and for surface reactions without special conditioners. However, some reagent systems do require specific control of agitation intensities and reaction times, the more important of these being the following: 1. Activation of ZnS with CuSO4. With the usual conditions pH about 10, with collector added with the CuSO4, Cu 2+ is almost completely precipitated as basic compounds and as collector salt. As a result the levels of reagent in solution are extremely low which probably accounts for the need for separate conditioning. The agitation intensities are at about the 0.01 HP/ton level.** 2. The kinetics of the important reactions occurring in an electrowinning cell have been determined. This information has been used to quantify relationships between the operating variables of current density, solution composition, agitation, and temperature and the resulting current efficiency and deposit quality. Analysis of these results has shown (1) the importance of dissolved iron in determining maximum possible current efficiency and corrosion rate at the cathode suspension loop, (2) the role of agitation, current density, inert salts and temperature in*determining deposit quality and (3) the effects of non-uniformity in the hydrodynamic conditions from the bottom to top of the cell. The significance of the results of this study to the operation of a commercial plant directly treating acid leach solutions is discussed.

INTRODUCTION Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, and its subsidiary companies, operate and manage mining, beneficiation, and pelletizing operations in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the province of Ontario, Canada, and the State of Western Australia, Australia. The concentrates and natural ores vary mineralogically, physically and chemically. This paper describes the techniques employed in pelletizing the various concentrates and ore fines. The plant operations described are the Republic, Humboldt, Tilden, Empire and Pioneer in Michigan, the Adams and Sherman in Ontario, and the Robe River in Western Australia. Table 1 contains further details regarding design and operating capacities, commissioning dates, and participant ownerships. Allis-Chalmers grate-kiln systems are utilized in Michigan and Ontario, and Dravo straight-grate systems in Western Australia. Currently, the Empire and Tilden operations are being expanded. At Empire the additional pelletizing unit, identified as Unit IV, will have a design capacity of 8 996 metric tonne/d and is scheduled for startup May 1, 1979. The Tilden operation is being doubled with the additional pelletizing unit, identified as Unit 11, having a de- sign capacity of 12 599 metric tonne/d. Startup is scheduled for January 1, 1980.
