"Column leach tests are used frequently to predict recoveries and reagent consumption for nickel laterite heap leaches. These column leaches often run for more than 100 days and therefore require long-term monitoring and data analysis to achieve the desired information. To minimise the cost and time required to obtain relevant information for nickel laterite heap leaching, we have developed a small-scale hydrogeometallurgical laboratory test to serve as a proxy to column, and by inference, heap leaching. In excess of 50 leach tests were conducted using four different small-scale proxy and column leach tests to compare predicted nickel recoveries, acid consumption and leach kinetics and to determine whether insight into potential scale-up effects can be obtained. The most promising proxy test was identified and we achieved a statistically significant recovery and acid consumption correlations between this test and the column leach tests. The accuracy of the small-scale tests was confirmed by column tests run on new laterite ores. The Golden Valley Volcanic Centre has been recently interpreted as being a combination diatreme breccia pipe and rhyo-dacite flow dome complex of Permo-Carboniferous age that intrudes basement granitoids and sediments of Ordovician-Devonian age. Exceptionally good exposure at the Centre has enabled the relationships between different lithologies to be determined. This, along with petrological studies, has led to a detailed understanding of the geological environment in which the complex formed. Gold, silver and base metal mineralisation have been recently shown to be associated with the Marginal Breccia at the perimeter of the diatreme. Comparisons have been made between the geology and mineralisation in this system and several similar diatremes which also contain gold-base metal sulphide mineralisation.

The basic separation phenomena taking place in film concentration processes are studied through a kinetic-probabilistic approach. This approach is based on the fact that the particle velocity in the film separation phenomena is a random variable and may be defined by frequency distributions and probability laws. The approach requires: 1. development of probabilistic models for describing the behaviour of particles having different specific gravity and size along selected trajectories in the separating devices; 2. setting up an experimental procedure for determining the relevant frequency distribution curves at the exit of the separators for the particles mentioned above; 3. estimation of model parameters and model validation. In the paper, the model equations are given for the mass distribution of particles on the surface of separators, the mass distribution at the exits of shaking tables and the residence time distribution in channel type devices. The relation between residence time distribution and particle velocity distribution is derived. The test procedure has been defined and results are reported for the exit or residence time distribution in channels. A comparison between experimental and calculated frequency distributions is reported.

Zinc-bearing massive sulphide deposits have been mined in Tasmania since 1900. The current major producers are Hellyer and Rosebery, with total resource tonnages (mined plus reserves) of 16 Mt (million tonnes) and 24.8 Mt respectively. These deposits belong to the class of seafloor volcanic-hosted massive sulphides (VHMS) and are located within the Mt Read Volcanics, a narrow belt of continental margin calcalkaline volcanics of Cambrian age. Compared to other Australian VHMS deposits, and world-wide MVT and Sedex deposits, the Tasmanian examples clearly stand-out due to their high metal grades, averaging over 17 per cent Pb+Zn. The deposits vary in morphology from mound style (Hellyer) to sheet style (Rosebery) with other combinations including stacked lenses (Que River) and disrupted cross-cutting bodies (Hercules). All deposits show the classic VHMS zonation from an Fe-Cu-bearing base to a Zn-Pb-Ba-rich top. Zinc, gold and silver tenor commonly increases toward the stratigraphic top of the deposits. The ores have been deformed during regional metamorphism, resulting in folding, shearing and recrystallisation of sulphide lenses. In addition to the major deposits, a number of small massive sulphide prospects occur throughout the volcanic belt and the potential for the discovery of further large, deeply buried deposits remains high.

Chrysotile asbestos is a valuable resource. Used as a reinforcement in asbestos cement, products are obtained which are cheap, are not attacked by vermin, do not rot or support growth of fungi and are unaffected by water or humid conditions. Such products are of great value in the developing countries where inexpensive and durable building materials and pressure pipe are very important to development, housing and water supplies. Concern over the adverse effects of inhaling asbestos has led to the introduction of increasingly stringent controls world wide on the quantities of airborne asbestos per- missible in the occupational situation. Wet processing has the potential for virtually eliminating the environmental concerns with asbestos dust both in fibre production and in the materials handling section of the manufac- ture of asbestos cement products. In addition, high efficiencies associated with wet process- ing mean that better yields are obtained and that the tailings which are dumped have a lower residual asbestos content. Since early 1977, ICI Australia and Woodsreef Mines have been engaged in a programme of research to develop and evaluate a wet mill- ingprocess to produce, from ore and existing tailings, high grade fibre suitable for use in asbestos cement products. The process has been developed through microscopic studies, labora- tory bench scale experiments, work in a small scale semi-continuous plant and product evalua- tion on experimental size Hatschek asbestos cement machines. A prototype mill with a normal feed rate of 1z tonnes per hour and capable of producing pipe grade asbestos from Woodsreef ore has been constructed and was operational from January, 1982 to July, 1983. A range of asbestos cement products have been made successfully on full scale Hatschek machines using fibre from ore and tailings milled in the prototype mill. Economic evaluations indicate that a wet process mill would be cheaper to build, operate and maintain than an equivalent dry process plant. A commercial plant has been designed 1. The use of concentrated solar flux for high temperature metallurgical applications is a wellresearched area with several reported literatures on solar calcination and metal oxide reduction. This paper presents two such processes with potential to reduce the carbon footprint from ironmaking through using concentrated solar flux. The first process involves solar flux incorporation to the recently developed lime-magnetite pellet (LMP) route of magnetite ore agglomeration. The second process is a hybrid solar-smelting route for iron ore-coal composite pellets that utilises solar flux to provide process heat. Both the concepts of solar agglomeration and solar smelting process were investigated using a solar simulator-hybrid reactor set-up at Swinburne University of Technology. Results from solar agglomeration experiments at 950°C suggested no change in the reaction mechanism of the LMPs under solar irradiation compared to electrical heating. The percentage and morphology of the primary phases (mainly CaFe3O5) appeared similar for both solar and electric heated LMPs. The solar-smelting of magnetite concentrate-lignite coal composite pellets at 1130°C showed a maximum metallisation of 55 per cent after 1.5 hrs of reaction. The solar-smelt process has about 25 to 35 per cent lower CO2 emission compared to the blast furnace ironmaking. Technoeconomic analysis of implementing a CST facility in an existing composite pellet process suggested a payback period of about ten years at a heliostat cost of $A100/m2 and natural gas cost of A$10/GJ. The economics of CST implementation can be further enhanced by decreasing the thermal losses from the heliostat field and reactor.

In a dynamic environment such as the Star Mountains of Papua New Guinea Geotechnical Engineering for the Ok Tedi Project must be described as both interesting and challenging. To be effective a reasonable sized team of dedicated people is required with occasional supplementation by specialist consultants and an annual review process. Ok Tedi Mining Limited's (OTML) Geotechnical Section has a vision to be recognised as the leading mine-based geotechnical engineering section in PNG and to be world class by any international standards. This paper deals with the organisational and operational duties of the Geotechnical Section at the Ok Tedi Mine. One of our major roles is in the area of safety, and in particular in the early warning of natural and mining induced geological hazards that may affect safety and/or productivity. The major activities in- clude geotechnical inspections (pit, waste dumps, tunnels, re- gional), data collection activities and database management, geotechnical design and control work.

This paper reviews the various processes successfully in operation to treat refractory gold ores and describes in detail the alkaline pressure oxidation circuit operating at the Barrick Mercur Mine, Utah, U.S.A., on car- bonaceous/sulphide refractory ore and the acidic pressure oxidation circuit operating at the Barrick Goldstrike Mine, near Carlin, Nevada, U.S.A., on sulphide refractory ore. The autoclave process is important to Barrick for the extraction of gold. The Company has operated successfully a 750 ton per day unit at its Mercur property for the past two years and more recently has commissioned a 1500 ton per day unit at Goldstrike. The paper presents data relative to operating costs, materials of construc- tion for autoclaves and peripheral equipment, reagent requirements, and changes required during commissioning for both autoclave systems.

The iron ore mining operations carried out by Goldsworthy Mining Limited at Golds- worthy, Shay Gap and Sunrise Hill, in the Pilbara region of the North-West of Western Australia, are unusual insofar as the ore reserves occur in a number of widely separated and relatively small deposits, requiring deep mining below the water table, and even below sea level at the Goldsworthy pit. This paper has been prepared to describe some of the problems associated with these deep open cut mines, and the technology employed to overcome them, in order to provide an efficient and economical operation. The problems discussed are: 1. Development of the Dewatering System for the Goldsworthy Mine. 2. The Stability of Pit Slopes at the Goldsworthy and Shay Gap Mines. 3. Development of Diesel Electric Trucks for Lonq Uphill Hauls.

A number of cooperative studies have been carried out as preliminary work for drafting a standard for application of granulated slag sand for concrete, and the following conclusions were reached 1 The ten kinds of granulated slag sands pro- duced in Japan satisfy the national standard for fine aggregate in terms of physical and chemical properties. 2 Mortar and concrete tests conducted with granulated slag sand revealed that, although with slight differences in the extent, gran- ulated slag sands used in these tests were applicable'as fine aggregate for concrete, 3 The pumpability test by a concrete pump carried out on concrete with two kinds of now commercially available granulated slag sand demonstrated that the pump pressure feeding is applicable in the same manner as in the case of ordinary concrete. These tests permitted' preparation of a draft standard for application of granulated slag sand, and the results formed the first step toward utilizing this material as a sub- stitute for natural sand.

South Africa is the world's largest producer of gold. The survival of its gold mining industry is dependent, to a large extent, on the successful implementation of new mining technology which reduces the operating costs. Gold mines of the country have a record of a high operational cost per tonne of rock excavated. The geology of the gold-bearing rock, in addition to the mining depth and the gold recoverable grade, profoundly affect the profitability of the industry. Among the other mining operations, drilling and blasting take a fair share of the mining cost. It is therefore proper to implement a dynamic approach of technological review aimed at combating the escalation of mining costs. Over the years, the industry has moved away from labour intensive activities. Mechanised operations are introduced where possible. Management techniques are oriented more towards better utilisation of human resources and machinery so as to enhance productivity in the stopes. This paper addresses the issue with particular reference to blasting operations in the stopes of deep gold mines. It reviews the conventional drilling and blasting techniques. It outlines some innovative changes brought about in the course of recent years with the aim of optimising productivity and the stope efficiency in particular. It focusses on the peculiarities of the blasting technology in deep mines. It discusses the issue of interaction between the high stress fields underground and the blasting generated stresses on rock fragmentation, as well as their impact on the remaining excavations. It anticipates the concept of the new technology of selective blasting in stoping. Finally it puts forward the crucial role played by management of the human factor underground.

Evidence will be presented to show that borescope inspection of mine roofs is one of the most useful techniques available for stability assessments. ACIRL currently has four borescopes, comprising two fibre-optic units of 2.7 m and 4.5 m length and two optical rod units (introscopes) 6 m and 8 m in length. (The 8 m unit is not yet fully operational because of modifications needed to meet safety regulations). Using the fibre-optic units, photographs of hole walls or ends can be taken to record features. Roof lithology and crack patterns can be observed in roof holes from 25 - 60 mm in diameter. Several crack parameters are useful: type, location in the roof with respect to height and lithological boundaries, presence of individuals or zones containing crack clusters and the estimated amount of dilation. These data are readily computer- plotted to form "borescope logs". Provided that the holes remain open, a hole or group of holes can be re-surveyed at intervals to monitor crack development across or along a roadway, for example with respect to an advancing blind-ended roadway face.

The 250 metric tonnes of gold and 360 000 metric tonnes of copper recovered from the Mt Morgan Mine in Central Queensland justify its fame. The mine ceased operation before the advent of three-dimensional computer graphical modelling of orebodies became common practice in mine planning. The Mount Morgan Mine records however remain and are the database for this study. The Mount Morgan project takes ore deposit modelling one step further by examining the relationship between grade distribution within the orebody and key geological features, as a tool for exploration and development.The Mount Morgan gold and copper mineralisation is shown to be strongly lognormally distributed. The deposit has been split into three areas, using geological boundaries, each with different geostatistical characteristics. Important features include: the spatial relationship of near-vertical, high grade shoots with a ring dyke thought to be related to the North Dyke; separation of the high grade eastern stopes from the others along the Andesite Dyke; and lack of concentrated mineralisation along the Slide Fault.Recognition of these features is useful to those currently exploring the Mount Morgan district for similar style deposits, by stressing the importance, or lack thereof, of the geological features.

Whenever rock is tipped from above, severe eruptions of airborne dust occur into the airways connected to tipping stations of rock passes (ore and waste) on the lower levels of a gold mine in the North West Province of South Africa. An investigation was undertaken to understand the nature of the physical phenomenon, in order to propose possible solutions. Accordingly, measurements were taken underground, involving the simultaneous logging at two levels of the transient pressures produced in the orepass by tipping from various levels. Two portable data loggers with associated transducers were custom-built for this purpose. Measurements were taken during a tipping program in which rock quantities and levels were controlled. Pressure pulses that are generated by the falling rock drive the airborne-dust eruptions. When tipping from a specified level, recorded pressure pulse waveforms were found to be repeatable on any given level, irrespective of the amount of rock falling, but measurements were conspicuously different on different levels. It was recognised that a pressure pulse is generated as the falling rock passes through the constricted region û a relatively narrow neck û at each tipping station. In passing through the constricted areas the mass of falling rock acts as a æleaky piston in a cylinderÆ and compresses the length of the air column in the orepass below that level. Once the rock has passed through the constriction, the pressure is released and this behaviour causes a regular train of pressure pulses that are separated by the time taken for the rock to move from one level to the next. Based on this physical understanding of the dust eruptions, a computational model has been developed that can reproduce all the main features of the measured phenomena. The model has been verified adequately against the measurements and can now form the basis for simulating a range of possible engineering solutions.

In a variety of methods, building an aground-underground seamlessly integrated model, and then analysing the formation and development mechanism of mining disaster based on this model is a useful way. In this paper, we studied an aground-underground seamlessly Integrated modelling method, and correspondingly given an aground-underground seamlessly integrated 3D spatial model, CSG+CD-TIN+GTP-TTS, by which we can carry out analysis of surface subsidence and underground laneway distortion efficiently, finally preliminary applications verified the effectiveness of this method.

Rock bolting provides a supplement or alternative to conventional timber and steel supports. The tensile strength of the bolts lies within a range established by manufacturing quality control. Rock bolt testing determines the ability of the rock, anchor and individual bolt as an assembly to accept load. The.test is performed to the yield strength of the bolt or anchor and deflection is observed. The anchorage index, inches deflection per 1000 lb load increment, is a measure of anchorage quality. This allows comparison with anchorages under ideal conditions. It also permits comparative assessment of roof bolt anchors in a particular environment.

The high gas emissions associated with the depth of mining and very high coal extraction at some Australian Collieries have provided a need to investigate the influence of geological and mining conditions on levels of gassiness. The introduction of longwall extraction in particular is associated with complex strata control problems and quick changes in gassiness. To this stage of Australian coal mining, no standard method has been developed to predict the different levels of gassiness associated with the various geological and mining conditions; and the relationship between coal output and total methane make has not been established. For local conditions, with a large number of coal seams lying in close proximity to the working seam, the significant contribution of gas emissions from adjacent strata was expected, especially as strata relaxation occurred during longwall mining. This depends mainly on geological conditions, strata control and coal production. For the deepest of the B.H.P. Collieries in the Newcastle region, the relationship between coal output and total methane make has been investigated by systematic gas balance measurement during longwall extraction. The computer method of iteration was used to approximate the mathematical equation from the initial graphs of coal production versus quantity of methane in the ventilation system for various strata conditions. The angle of caving was established for local geological and mining conditions, for planning and design of the positions of cross measure boreholes.
