Discrete vein modelling presents an innovative geology driven 3D modelling method for quantification of vein hosted mineral deposits, with far reaching potential for critical mineral supply and low impact resource extraction. By integrating key geological drivers with advanced discrete fracture network modelling, the DMX protocol (launched in 2019) converges to a more realistic representation of complex vein systems in three-dimensional space. The approach insights greater geologic reasoning in distributing mineral grades where vein boundaries are already defined. This presents a viable alternative to existing modelling and estimation methods and has important implications for mineral resource estimation and reporting. Further implications are discussed, where the enhanced understanding of complex orebody characteristics can potentially be used in optimising mining and mineral processing, supporting more sustainable and efficient mining practices.

Double corrosion protection (DCP) rock bolts have evolved to become complicated assemblies comprising numerous components. This complexity is mainly associated with durability considerations including potential exposure to adverse groundwater conditions and ensuring separation of dissimilar metals within the bolt assembly itself.Recent progress in the construction of glass-fibre reinforced polymer (GRP) rock bolts have the potential to provide a viable alternative to conventional steel rock bolts in civil tunnelling applications. The durability of the material results in a much simpler bolt detail and permits the use of resin rather than solely cement based grouts.This paper presents the findings of the comparative structural testing of GRP bolts with conventional DCP steel bolts. The axial load performance, including stiffness, ultimate capacity and ductility of bolts are compared. Shear behaviour of bolts is considered, including durability issues associated with damage to the plastic sleeve used in DCP bolts.The paper also considers other issues which are relevant to the design of temporary and permanent rock bolts used in tunnel support, such as initial tensioning and grouting. The Palaeoproterozoic Leveäniemi iron oxide apatite (IOA) deposit of the so-called Kiruna type is currently mined by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (publ.), commonly known as LKAB. The mineralogy of iron oxides, ie magnetite, hematite, maghemite, and goethite is more complicated compared to the neighbouring and more famous IOA deposits of Kiirunavaara and Malmberget. Furthermore, the mineral chemistry of the iron oxides in the Leveäniemi deposit is also slightly different. Especially, the information about the deportment of titanium and vanadium in iron oxides and distribution in the deposit is essential since they can have an impact in the steelmaking process. For this study 50 samples were selected from exploration drill cores and investigated by optical microscopy, FE-SEM-EDS and EPMA at LKAB and the Geological Survey of Finland. Investigations revealed that magnetite is the predominant iron oxide mineral with secondary hematite being the second most abundant mineral. Primary hematite, maghemite, and goethite seem to be less abundant. It should be noted, however, that this investigation focused on magnetite which currently is the only mineral with economic value. Vanadium occurs as a substitution element in the crystal lattice of iron oxide minerals in the Leveäniemi deposit and not as discrete stochiometric vanadium minerals. In the investigated samples vanadium concentration in magnetite ranges from 0.12 to 0.32 wt per cent V2O3 with higher concentration in the southern part of the deposit. Contrary, titanium does not substitute for iron in the crystal lattice of magnetite or secondary hematite (less than 0.018 wt per cent TiO2). It either occurs as tiny inclusions of titanium oxide minerals or as exsolution lamellae of ilmenite in magnetite. The spatial distribution for titanium in the deposit, however, remains unknown. Furthermore, results of this study indicate that alteration of primary magnetite to secondary hematite has had no significant effect on the trace element chemistry of these minerals in the Leveäniemi deposit.

Process plants are characterised by variability of performance over a wide range of time-scales; reflected in fluctuations in metal recovery, concentrate grade, plant throughput and reagent costs. In turn, these fluctuations impact financial metrics such as operating costs and revenue. The primary cause of plant variability is variation in the physical, lithological and mineralogical characteristics of the ore fed to the plant. The variability of the ore is driven by the intrinsic heterogeneity of the geology and mineralogy of the orebody, the mining method and mine production plan, the capacity to stockpile and blend, as well as the plant flow sheet and the level of plant automation. Whilst the impact of ore variability on process plants is universally recognised, it is rarely quantified in financial terms. Consequently, opportunities to reduce its impact are often overlooked due to the lack of a basis for a quantifiable cost-benefit analysis to justify improvement initiatives. This paper will present case studies using production data from the Renison tin concentrator and a zinc concentrator. These case studies demonstrate that as the standard deviation of plant head grade increases (as a proxy for ore variability), plant metal recovery subsequently reduces. The metal recovery is then converted into plant revenue losses, to quantify the economic impact of ore variability. The Renison case study demonstrated that whilst a very rare occurrence, revenue losses were as high as 34 per cent (relative to the baseline) when standard deviation was at its highest. The zinc concentrator case study demonstrated that revenue losses were as high as 6 per cent (relative to the baseline) when standard deviation was at its highest. Options are available for reducing and managing ore variability in the process plant. These options include changing mining practices so that the ore is fed to the plant with less variability, more advanced process plant control systems and the use of predictive geometallurgical models.

An important aspect of geometallurgy is quantifying mineral processing attributes, which leads to improved orebody understanding. One of these attributes is flotation performance. Several methods have been developed as indicators for flotation performance, including batch testing leading to kinetic information and the standard grade-recovery curve. This paper makes a preliminary statistical comparison between a newly proposed geometallurgical batch flotation procedure and the æstandardÆ batch flotation test commonly used to measure flotation performance in the laboratory. The new test uses much less material than the standard test, and is much faster. It is concluded that the new method follows the final recovery of the standard method well, suggesting that it will be effective in reflecting ore variability for geometallurgical purposes. Comparison of the methods based on the full grade-recovery curve shows less agreement, but this may be due to the fact that the curve is sensitive to the particular experimental set-up and conditions, which make such comparisons quantitatively challenging. The geological and economic aspects of the known deposits of uranium in southern Africa are described. Processes influencing uranium mineralisation in the relevant geological environments are elaborated upon in order to define fundamental characteristics of mineralisation in the sub-continent and identify potential areas for the location of new deposits. Several areas, namely the Damara orogenic belt and its extension in Zambia and Zaire, the Bushveld zone, and the terrains of uranium fertilisation from the mantle have a high probability of hosting uranium deposits which are yet to be discovered. Uranium resources of the southern African region have been estimated and production forecasted to the year 2000. This geographic region contains one quarter of WOCA's resources in the Reasonably Assured Resources and Estimated Additional Resources - Category I exploitable at less than 130/kg U. On this resource base, it has the potential to maintain its position as the leading exporter of uranium in the world with a production of 13 350 t U308 by the end of the century. Zambia and Zaire are expected to join South Africa and Namibia as uranium producers in the next decade, with their combined share of projected production being in the order of 10%.

We often read and hear, especially in the United States, that we are running out of critical metals. These are vague forebodings of stagna- tion or winding down of our civilization. Our technological progress has been rapid in the last 50 years and is still advancing at an accelerated rate, and predictions of its long-term impact on consumption and production of metals are more hazardous than ever in the light of the great economic and political shifts that are bound to continue. There are many factors that will have a hardly predictable but profound effect on pro- duction and consumption of metals over a time span of, say, 25 years. Among such factors are recycling, substitution, availability of capital, direct involvement of governments in financing and production, and the capability of producing much lower grade ores at possibly much higher prices relative to costs in the event of scarcity. I must state at the outset that my discussion of this topic does not take into account the role that deep-sea nodules containing copper, nickel, cobalt, and manganese may play, because I don't believe production from these deposits will be of much significance within the 25 year span I will be discussing.

Zinc and lead sulphide flotation con centrates containing from 0.02 to 0.20% Cd are roasted on an updraught sinter machine at the Cockle Creek Works of Sulphide Corp- oration Pty. Limited to provide sinter for simultaneous smelting of zinc and lead in an Imperial Smelting Furnace (I.S.F.). The major portion (about 85%) of cad- mium in concentrate feed to the Sinter Plant is eliminated with sinter fume and is rec- overed by weak acid leaching in the Cadmium Plant'followed by counter-current decantat- ion, ion exchange concentration, precipitat- ion of cadmium sponge and partial refining to caustic refined cadmium metal. Cadmium not eliminated during sintering is volatilised in the I.S.F. and subsequently recovered as zinc alloy by distillation in the zinc ref- ining columns of the Zinc Refluxer. The partially refined cadmium metal and cadmium- zinc alloy are blended as feed to the cadm- ium refining column where separation and recovery of cadmium is effected. Condensate from the column is further refined under caustic soda flux and cast into anode shapes. Production is 200 t.p.a. at 85% recovery of cadmium in concentrates. The world-class Bulyanhulu gold deposit (375 t Au) is in the Sukumaland greenstone belt, Northwestern Tanzania. The main mineralised quartz vein structure, termed Reef one, occurs at the contact of felsic metavolcanic rocks on the hanging wall and mafic metavolcanic rocks on the footwall. Reef one is dominated by massive quartz together with pyrite, pyrrhotite and minor chalcopyrite. Alteration in the footwall basalt is characterised by extensive chloritisation, calcification and silicification, which is strongest near the vein. Sericitisation also locally occurs adjacent to the vein. Metamorphic hornblende and plagioclase (albite) increase in abundance at a distance of 120 m from the vein and reflect the gradation into less altered rocks. The increasing abundance of chlorite, calcite, quartz and local sericite near Reef one, coupled by replacement textures suggests that most of these footwall minerals are the product of hydrothermal alteration, rather than regional metamorphism. Geochemical data shows slight enrichment in Ca, Fe and As towards the vein, whereas Zn in several drill holes becomes enriched away from Reef one. The Bulyanhulu gold deposit is a quartz-pyrite-chalcopyrite shear controlled vein with an adjacent extensive chlorite-quartz-calcite hydrothermal alteration zone (and a limited local sericite alteration zone) that passes to a hornblende-albite metamorphic assemblage further into the footwall.

I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by re-organising, and a wonderful method this is for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralisation This was written by the Roman Gaius Petronius in AD65. How much have things changed in nearly 2,000 years? What then does it take besides the fundamentals and good organisation to build a successful career in a successful organisation? I'm prepared to venture a list of what I'll'call Tips for Young Professionals. If you've got what it takes, and apply these, I think that you'll gain a great deal of satisfaction from your career, even if you don't reach the distant target each of you should have in mind now. So settle back in an advice-receiving mode, and please forgive me if I come across as a master of the bleedin' obvious, as Basil once accused his wife Sybil of being in the unforgettable Fawlty Towers.

THE Great Fitzroy Mines Limited, comprising an area of 183 acres, and held under lease, are situated at Mt. Chalmers, within the Cawarral goldfield, 18 miles from the city of Rockhampton, Queensland, on the Rockhampton-Yeppoon railway.The nearest railway station i; Mt. Ohalmers, distant about half a mile from the mine, with which it is connected by a fairly good road. The outcrop of the ore-body consists almost entirely of ironstained quartzite, no sign of copper being visible. The outcrop and its immediate vicinity have been worked intermittently for gold during the past :fifty years, the ore being amenable to battery treatment.About twenty years ago a company was formed to prospect this outcrop, and work was commenced by driving an adit, but the results proved disappointing, and work ceased. Later a party of prospectors sunk a winze from the adit level, which has sincedeveloped into wh~t is now known as the North shaft. The property was afterwards prospected by Messrs. Oharley and Osborne, who continued sinking the winze, meeting with sulphides at a depth of about 120 ft.The Mt. Chalmers Copper Mining Company was formed to work the property, and smelting operations started on a small scale. These, however, met with ip.different success, and the property was again abandoned.

Intensive resource extraction, in the form of multiple mining operations, presents significant assessment and management challenges for resource developers, governments, community and the environment. Cumulative impacts, ie the successive, incremental and combined impacts (both positive and negative) of an activity on society, the economy and the environment, can place significant pressure on social, economic and environmental capital and render conventional mine-by-mine approaches to management ineffective. Cumulative impacts can be what are most important to environments, communities and economies surrounded by multiple mining operations because cumulative impacts are what they experience. There is much to gain from increased consideration of cumulative impacts. Unmitigated impacts have the potential to delay or even prevent expansion of mining in existing and prospective areas. On the other hand proactive management of cumulative impacts can benefit regional environments and communities and contribute to the industryÆs social license to operate. Resources are often not the limiting factor to better cumulative impact management. More effective coordination of existing resources may go a long way toward mitigation and enhancement, and better planning and assessment may help avoid impacts and exploit opportunities for efficiency gains through reduced duplication. In this paper we draw from working examples to present five practical assessment and management strategies applicable to resource companies to enhance positive, and avoid and mitigate negative, cumulative impacts. The strategies are presented based on their capacity for achieving outcomes, ease of implementation and cost effectiveness and are drawn from a multi-year study on the assessment and management of cumulative impacts in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales and a follow-up study to improve cumulative impact assessment and management practice in the Australian coal mining industry, both reported elsewhere.

The process of refurbishment is not a precisely defined one. It is under- stood to mean an upgrading of a plant which is normally performed only once. The application of refurbishment in the field of materials hand- ling equipment poses particular problems because complex plants con- sist of individual components having quite different remaining service lives. For this reason, a systematic, proven procedure is proposed for the refurbishment of large materials handling equipment, designed to ensure economic implementation in accordance with the company goals. Rheinbraun2 has been using materials handling equipment since 1900, the largest units today being bucket-wheel excavators with a daily capacity of 240,000 bank cubic metres of overburden and a service weight of up to 13,500 t (metric tons). Since 1975, more than 50 large-scale refurbish- ment projects have been carried out in the company. In the process, refur- bishment has turned out to be the proven alternative to replacement of large materials handling equipment. Rheinbraun Engineering,3 a Rhein- braun subsidiary, carries out planning, consulting, and supervising work in the implementation of refurbishment projects in Germany and abroad. The most recent example is the refurbishment of Dredger 11 of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria in cooperation with Krupp-Australia, Melbourne.

The grade (or value) to volume relationship which constitutes a target orebody is used to show that the concentration of diamonds in an economic deposit may be as low as O.Olg/t. Diamond valuations from an Indonesian deposit demonstrate that the largest 5% of the diamonds in the deposit contributed 25% of the mass of diamonds recovered and 70% of the value from the ore. The need to consider the large stone content and the probability of recovery is used to estimate that the sampling density is required to be as high as 4-10,000ppm for a VLC deposit. This is compared with an acceptable sampling density for a bauxite deposit of 700ppb. A case history of the discovery of a diamond bearing paleo-channel in the Ellendale field in Western Australia illustrates that the sampling task becomes impractical. It requires an excavation in excess of 300,000 bcm of material to prove a 5M hem ore reserve. The conclusion is reached that setting up a small scale mining operation is an appropriate method of proving such an ore reserve and that the Code of Reporting should allow a category of "Mineable Resource" to cover such a situation.

There is often a difference in opinion about the allocation of risk in the establishment of mine closure bonds or financial assurances. From the State’s perspective, protection is needed to ensure that the broader community is not left with the liability of properly closing a mine in the event of a default by the mine operator. Such a default might occur where an operator decides to abandon a site, perform incomplete rehabilitation, becomes insolvent or claims limited liability. On the other hand, mine operators who can demonstrate a strong financial position plus a record of social and environmental commitment and performance, argue that there should be some recognition of this in setting a bond that is less than the full cost of early closure. They argue that a mine rehabilitation bond based on the full cost of early closure is overly conservative and ignores the actual risk of the operator being in default. This paper outlines an approach to high solids slurry pipeline design with data generated from a closed pipe-loop test system. The pressure and flow rate data generated is used to develop a pseudo-shear diagram for the purposes of system design. Following this approach enables the design of a full pipe flow system maximising system life and reliability. The alternative free fall system is explained and the disadvantages highlighted.Environmental and social considerations are discussed; mainly water and land use, and how designing for high solids slurry pipeline systems can be used improve these aspects of a mining project.Also discussed is how the use of high solids slurry pipeline systems can help to mitigate the risk associated with surface tailings storage facility failure, with the Bulyanhulu project used as a positive example.

The purpose of this research was to study the calcination of lead-zinc flotation tailings from the Angouran lead and zinc flotation plant in Iran as a pre-concentration step prior to hydrometallurgical processing of the oxidised tailings. There is an abundance of these tailings in the Angouran region and making use of these tailings would help preserve national wealth and also reduce the serious problems of environmental pollution caused by the tailings. At the optimal conditions of calcining at 750 - 800¦C for 45 minutes, the sample showed a mass loss of about 19 per cent. Mineralogical analyses showed that under these conditions the carbonate minerals including smithsonite (ZnCO3), calcite (CaCO3) and dolomite (Ca Mg (CO3)2) decomposed to their respective oxides. Hemimorphite (Zn4Si2O7 (OH)2.H2O) converted into willemite (Zn2SiO4) and this transformation postponed the formation of silica gel in the leach solution. The grade of zinc increased from 22.20 per cent to 29 per cent. These mineralogical changes resulted in desirable reactions in the acid leach process.

Conditions encountered at a recently completed brownfields mining project provided valuable insight into, and development of, techniques for working in and around known underground mining voids in an open cut environment. The careful application of underground blasting principles to a pit environment and successful excavation whilst maintaining appropriate stand-off distances were two primary areas of innovation enabling the success of the project.Mary Mac Hill is a gold deposit situated less than 2 km south-west of the town of Laverton, Western Australia. It is owned and mined by Crescent Gold Limited. Previous underground mining by various other mining companies has left an extensive network of underground horizontal development, subvertical stopes and shafts, some of which daylighted at surface. This was identified as potentially posing substantial risks, which would prevent the application of conventional mining methods. Two major stopes were located under a hard banded iron ridge topped by a peak of cap, connected variously by narrow drives and vertical development. Due to the proximity of the first of these stopes to the surface, its dimensions and governed by procedures and advice provided by externally engaged engineers, Crescent Gold could not access the area of the ridge immediately overlying the stope using conventional open cut mining methods. This was the first of many hurdles surmounted in mining this deposit.The following report outlines how the challenges this geometrically complex deposit presented. Solving these problems enabled the team to mine the contained gold ore to a completed design, without subjecting personnel or mining equipment to harm due to a void breach incident. This paper outlines the numerous complications and difficulties Mary Mac Hill posed and explains the strategies developed to overcome them. A useful way to assess potential productivity of SLC mines is by quantifying tonnes/drawpoint/day to be extracted from the mine. However limited industry information has been published to help mines benchmark this number. This paper assesses industry data which can be used to support estimates of potential productivity from new mines based on tonnes/drawpoint/day. The information used has been extracted from historical production schedules which indicate what was achieved, rather than what was planned. It has been assessed using an algorithm created for the purpose and is presented with discussion of varying definitions of active drawpoints, analysis of the data and inquiry into some of the underlying contributing factors.

A strategic mine plan is a fundamental part of any mining operation. It must provide a realistic and operative extraction and processing schedule, and yield the highest value for the business. For open pit mines, the problem can be modelled as a set of blocks representing the deposit, for each of which we need to decide if it is going to be mined, if so, when and where it will be sent (process, stock or dump).This problem can be proven to be of NP-Hard complexity. The traditional approach used by mining engineers to tackle this complexity is to separate the problem into more tractable components, solving each separately. The first step is to use the Lerchs-Grossman (LG) algorithm to obtain the final pit limit, as well as a set of optimised pit shells (nested pits), using different input prices. Then, using this input, operational phases are designed. Third, the set of phases can be used as an input for a phase-bench style optimisation, usually using a mathematical programming-based algorithm.There are, however, several problems with this approach. First, dividing the problem into simpler parts has the consequence that any compromises made at early stages limit the potential value left for the following steps. Second, LG is a static algorithm, with no concept of the time-value of money, capacity limits, opportunity costs, etc. Phase design is essentially a manual step, for which nested pits provide insufficient information in practice, and therefore the quality of the result in terms of potential net present value (NPV) depends strongly on the experience and expertise of the designer. This means that key input data such as commodity prices, different processes capacities and mine movement limits, are considered only at scheduling, when there is little room for optimisation. This sequential approach limits the potential value in each step, where a simplified problem is addressed, instead of addressing the real, and more complex problem, which is dynamic and should be solved as a whole.We present in this paper an algorithm, and its commercial software implementation, that addresses the dynamic problem as a whole, simultaneously and automatically creating a high-value strategic mine plan that adheres to basic operational constraints, determining dynamic cut-off grades and delivering a set of phases which can serve as a much stronger guide than nested pits for the final design. We discuss some of the key elements of the algorithm and propose a new methodology for strategic mine planning, where phase design dynamically responds to mining strategy definition.
