Mining in highly stressed ground conditions has been an increasing challenge at the Brunswick Mine. Two large regional pillars were established on the 1000 m Level to support the ground for safe extraction of the surrounding ore. The South Regional Pillar contains about 5 million tonnes of ore and the North Regional Pillar has about 3 million tonnes of ore. In the fall of 2000, mining activities were suspended following a series of ground movements around the South Regional Pillar along weak geological structures. After extensive geotechnical investigations, a decision was made to carry out a mass destress blast in the West Ore Zone (WOZ) to cut the principal stress across an area of 135 m along strike and 86 m high. At the end of July 2001, the WOZ mass blast was successfully initiated. Following this success the mine decided to take a similar approach to destressing the North Regional Pillar (NRP). The final mass blast was taken in early February 2003. Advanced blasting technologies, including state of the art electronic detonators and blast simulation, played an important role in achieving the successful blasts. The high precision of delay timing and long delay duration of the electronic detonators ensured accurate and reliable initiations of over 800 blastholes in the WOZ mass blast. Orica?s DMC_Blast (Distinct Motion Code) simulation code was used to study different blasting blocks for the desired timing in the initiation sequence. This paper describes the process of applying electronic detonators in complex blasts, and discusses how blast simulation results were interpreted to guide engineering design of the mass blasts.

"SynopsisThe Kanichee open pit mine and milling complex is situated approximately four air miles north-west of Ternagami, Northern Ontario, in Strathy Township. Mining and milling production commenced in January 1974.Milling throughput currently is at a rated capacity of 500 tons per day, seven days per week. A bulk nickel-copper sulphide concentrate is produced, and is trucked daily to the smelter at Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited, Falconbridge, Ontario, some 120 road miles from Kanichee. Concentrate grades produced are in the order of 4.0% Ni and 8.0% Cu, with corresponding recoveries of 68-70% nickel and 86-90% copper. Stage additions of 100% guar-gurn solution reagent to the flotation cells for depression of talcose minerals, proved to be the major break-through for optimizing metallurgical performance.2. HistoryThe present Kanichee Mining property is known to old-timers in the Temagami area as the former Cuniptau Mine. Several attempts were made in the mid '30's and 40's to extract the ore at a profit, but each effort resulted in failure.In 1933-36, Cuniptau Mines Development Co. Limited, later called Cuniptau Mines Limited, sank a 245-foot vertical shaft and completed 2,200 feet of lateral work on the 100-140 and the 225 foot levels. Fifteen tons of ore were sent for testwork to the Mines Branch, Ottawa, Ontario.Cuniptau Mines Limited, in 1936, milled some 3,000 tons, and the resulting concentrate was put through a pilot smelter situated on the present mine site. Metallurgically, the smelting results were not encouraging, primarily due to the high melting point of the talcose minerals in the concentrate. From the period 1937-48, minor exploration work was done by Ontario Mining Corporation, Ontario Nickel Mines Limited, and Trebor Mines Limited. During the period 1948-49, 128 diamond drill holes, totalling 40,900 feet were evaluated by Trebor Mines Limited. In 1961, the name was changed to Ajax Minerals Limited, during 1968, five diamond drill holes were sunk, totalling 1,700 feet. Since that period the property has remained idle."

This study presents a method for the determination of intra-particle diffusivities in ion-exchange resins for the purposes of evaluating the state of resin degradation during service. The method uses a zero length column (ZLC) in a closed circuit with variable speed pump and reservoir. The intra-particle diffusion is determined from absorption data by using the Nernst-Plank approximation along with the ‘mass transfer factor’ - which is a product of the mass transfer coefficient (kf )and the concentration of the adsorbing ion in the liquid at the surface of the resin - in a computer algorithm fitting simulated curves to experimental data.. Through this approach the changed intra-particle diffusivity, of a gel-type acid resin, over a 1000 loading and elution cycles, is shown.

"Black calcium cyanide is utilized mainly as a reagent for gold extraction. It is produced by reacting calcium cyanamide, sodium chloride and calcium carbide at temperatures in the range of 1200°C to 1400°C in a smothered arc furnace. The equivalent sodium cyanide content of the product is in the range of 45% to 50% and the calcium cyanamide conversion efficiency is in the range of 90% to 95%. Since black cyanide contains impurities such as salt and lime and also because the conversion efficiencies are below 100%, the product contains unwanted materials which significantly increase the shipping costs.The impurity content of the raw materials can not be lowered without increasing their cost and/or the processes to produce them, and therefore the present research was focussed on studying those factors which affect the cyanide grade. The major variables investigated were: the heating rate, the reaction temperature, the salt to cyanamide ratio, the nitrogen content of the calcium cyanamide, moisture additions and calcium carbide additions. It was found that each of these variables had a significant effect on the product grade. The highest cyanide content of the product was obtained for salt to cyanamide mass ratios of 0.55 to 0.60. The salt reduces the decomposition rate of the cyanide and, therefore, at low salt to cyanamide ratios and at higher temperatures, the product grade is decreased. It is likely that the salt evaporates at the higher reaction temperatures and this decreases the cyanide capacity of the melt. High heating rates minimize the residence time and thus salt evaporation is reduced and higher grades can be obtained. As expected, the cyanide content increased with the nitrogen content of the cyanamide. Calcium carbide additions resulted in an increase in the product grade. The presence of small amounts of moisture in the charge caused a significant decrease in the cyanide content of the black cyanide. An equilibrium reaction is postulated in order to explain the black cyanide process and in particular the effect of calcium carbide on the product grade."

"Hydrocyclone modelling and selection procedure is illustrated. Computerized procedure for hydrocyclone cut size determination for grinding and non-grinding applications is described.A standard procedure for evaluating operating hydrocyclones is described in detail. Many case studies are illustrated comparing actual plant performance with the computer simulation output in terms of overflow product size distributions.INTRODUCTION Cyclones are widely used for applications such as: close circuit grinding, backfill, tailings and dewatering. Normally, cyclones are used for very fine separations where screens are not suitable or too expensive. Figure 1 shows the separation size range of various classifying devices. Cyclones are popular because of their low capital and operating cost. Cyclone selection procedure for different applications depends on the amount of information available on the cyclone feed slurry characteristics. Closed circuit grinding applications will be discussed in detail in this paper. The Cut Size:The size of the material in the feed which reports 50% to each product stream (i.e. underflow and overflow), after correcting for the feed solids by-passing with the underflow liquid, is termed the cut size or ""d50c"". This is often used as the criterion and the basis for cyclone design.When the corrected recovery to underflow of each mesh size in the feed is plotted against the geometric mean size in microns on a log scale, the micron size corresponding to 50% recovery is the d50c size."

Brake testing of large mining trucks was initiated in British. Columbia in 1969 following an accident involving the failure of the service brakes of a l00-ton electric-drive truck. Some selected results of the 1976 brake test program are presented and discussed ?in this paper . The tests were conducted on end- dump trucks having load capacities ranging from 85 to 235 tons. All tests were made with the vehicles fully loaded operating on downhill grades varying from 8 to 10 %. Stopping distances were measured from initial speeds varying between 10 and 39 mph. The results are adequate, in most cases, to determine the "ultimate" capabilities of the service brakes of varying models and sizes of haulage trucks operating in British Columbia mines.

"The Sudbury area environment became drastically altered commencing in 1871 with lumbering, repeated fires and early open roasting operations from 1887 to 1929. These combined factors had such a pronounced effect that approximately 24 square miles were totally denuded of any vegetation and 87 square miles were semi-barren to somewhat stressed.The two nickel producing companies in the area have reduced the sulphur dioxide emissions considerably over the years. Falconbridge Limited, alone, reduced sulphur dioxide emissions by 77% from 1971 to 1984.These reductions have resulted in improvements to the air, soil, lake and vegetation quality in the Sudbury area.INTRODUCTIONThe Sudbury area environment became drastically altered commencing in the 1870's with lumbering, repeated fires and early open roasting operations from 1888 to 1929. These combined factors had such a pronounced effect on the Sudbury environment that approximately 24 square miles (64 sq. km.) were totally denuded of any vegetation and 87 square miles (225 sq. km.) were semi-barren.Over the years, the Sudbury area environment has improved considerably. This has been due to emission cutbacks by both Inco Metals and Falconbridge Limited, coupled with industry, government and community reclamation programs. Before the improvements are discussed, a better understanding of the historical degradation is required."

Self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers have demonstrated unparalleled performance internationally for the implementation of indirect heat transfer in severely fouling fluid environments. The ingenious configuration of recirculated cleaning particles through the tubes of vertical shell and tube heat exchangers provides the ability to solve any problems that arise as a consequence of tube-side fouling during indirect heat transfer to process fluids or slurries. In most cases, the cleaning particles consist of chopped metal wire, however other process-specific materials have been used. In addition to the mitigation of fouling effects, a number of other significant benefits for slurry heating are afforded by the mode of operation of the self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers. Increased turbulence at the slurry/tube interface is imparted by the action of the fluidised particles, resulting in very high heat transfers at relatively low liquid velocities. Furthermore, given the thixotropic nature of most process slurries, the action of the fluidised particles imparts additional shear to the process slurry, resulting in shear thinning effects with a consequent reduction in pressure drop and enhancement of heat transfer across the heat exchanger. The benefits provided by the self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchanger make it the ideal option for the indirect heating of laterite nickel slurry for High-Pressure-Acid-Leach (HPAL) plants. This article explains the principle and application of the self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchanger technology for the processing of laterite nickel and cobalt slurries in HPAL plants. It also presents an elegant method to revamp existing direct heated laterite nickel and cobalt processing plants into an indirect heated configuration employing self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers.

The Sepon process plant utilises an autoclave to oxidize a flotation concentrate containing pyrite, residual copper minerals, and sulphur. The concentrate is produced from the residue of a preceding atmospheric copper leaching circuit. The function of the autoclave is to provide iron and acid for that atmospheric copper leaching circuit. The key issues in the operation of the autoclave are to maximise the production of acid and ferric ions and to avoid scaling issues related to sulphur balling in the autoclave. Scale control in the autoclave was examined using various dispersants and residue recycle without success. Operation of the autoclave at high temperature and high acidity addressed the scale issue through rapid oxidation of the sulphur and produced a ferric sulphate precipitate in the residue that could be re-leached to provide ferric iron. This paper presents the development steps followed, through batch and continuous piloting that resulted in an autoclave circuit design that addressed the above process requirements. Following definition of the process design basis, modelling of the autoclave operation was carried out to assist with engineering design. The model included thermodynamics and kinetics of oxidation of pyrite, elemental sulphur and covellite and also considered gas/liquid mixing, oxygen solubility as a function of temperature and solution composition, ferrous to ferric oxidation, gangue reactions with acid and precipitation/re-dissolution of basic ferric sulphate and alunite.

"A locked cycle flotation test was done on a sample from the ovoid portion of the Voisey 's Bay copper-nickel sulphide ore. The chemical conditions for this test were generated by prior independent testing. In this test work the time in each of the five separation stages was optimized prior to executing the locked cycle test. A numerical simulation of the continuous circuit material balance was done prior to the locked cycle test. The test results were not fully satisfactory because the flotation of pyrrhotite in the bulk rougher and cleaner stages was not consistent. The preliminary indication was that the samples had oxidized to varying degrees during storage.INTRODUCTIONINCO has performed batch laboratory flotation testing on ore from Voisey's Bay which is a mixture of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. Earlier, Lakefield Research was contracted by Diamond Field Resources to test the ""flotability"" of the ore, which included a pilot plant trial. INCO's J. Roy Gordon Research Laboratory has repeated many of the batch tests that Lakefield did to verify their results. Based on their own work, INCO has modified the circuit proposed by Lakefield Research. The modified circuit is based on batch test work, but no locked cycle test (LCT) was done. It is believed that this circuit will produce a copper concentrate at 29-30% copper and a primary nickel concentrate at 15-20% with recoveries of 80% or above.For several years the University of Toronto has been working with INCO to provide ""hands on"" experience for undergraduate students as an Industrial Research Project (IRP). This year, the objective for IRP was to optimize the time for each of the five separation stages for the Voisey's Bay ore then to numerically and experimentally simulate the material balance for a continuous circuit."

Historical In the course of a paper which is necessarily limited in length, such as the present one, it is obviously impossible to describe in detail the history, development, and present position of coal preparation in Western Europe. Great Britain has been blessed with large deposits of excellent coal of nearly every type, ranging from the high-grade anthracites of South Wales, which are characterised by their very low ash and volatile con-tents, to the superb coking coals of South Wales and Durham -probably the finest in the world -with their low ash and sulphur contents, the latter constituent often well be-low l per cent. Gas coals abound in Lancashire and Yorkshire, while coals from the East Midlands, Northumberland, and Scotland are excellent for steam-raising and other industrial purposes. The excellent quality of these various coals has, in years gone by, ensured ready .sales abroad and it is not surprising, therefore; that methods of coal preparation were largely developed on the Continent in an endeavour to upgrade the inferior fuels found there, so that the prepared product could compete with British coals on the European market.

"Option pricing is used in finance for valuing options to buy (or sell) shares at some future date because it provides a convenient framework for quantifying values subject to uncertainty. As one of the main sources of uncertainty in mining is the price (sales) of the metal, this approach can also be used for valuing mining projects.The first part of this paper reviews options and option pricing; the second part presents the approach developed by Brennan and Schwartz (1985) for using option pricing to value natural resources. Several applications of this methodology have been published; these are described. From a mining point of view, the assumptions made by Brennan and Schwartz are too simplistic. The weaknesses are discussed with a view to improving an apparently promising new way of assessing the value of projects. IntroductionThe collapse of the British merchant banking group, Barings, has highlighted the risks that can be incurred by speculators and arbitragers in the futures and options markets. But this negative attention on futures and options should not make us forget their positive aspects. They can provide producers and consumers of metals with more predictable sales prices. The introduction of the new traded average price options, TAPOS, by the London Metal Exchange in January 1997 is a response to this need. Equally important, the theory that the finance industry has developed for valuing options provides an interesting framework for valuing mineral projects as well. While this paper was being revised, the South African gold mining house, JCI, announced that it was using a methodology based on option pricing for valuing the mineral rights to deeplevel gold resources (see Box 1)."

"Heath Steele Mines Ltd. operates a lead-zinc-copper mining and milling complex in New Brunswick.• During the past seven years, as ore reserves increased, the mill capacity was first expanded to 1,600 tpd and then to 3,000 tpd. In the last expansion, instead of building a completely new 3,000-tpd mill, or adding to existing installations, Heath Steele retained service facilities, buildings, ore bins, Jab, etc., and removed and replaced almost all existing process facilities. Requiring a complete mill shutdown, the expansion had to be carried out in minimum time. Also, new equipment had to fit into existing space. Critical path networks of the project were prepared, a tight schedule for construction was mapped out and progress charted daily to detect problems before they could interrupt the schedule. Heath Steele supervised the purchasing, handling and storage of new equipment, maintained liaison with the engineering contractor and became a sub-contractor, using its own staff to install all flotation equipment and process piping. The 1,600-tpd installation was dismantled and a 3,000- tpd unit was successfully put onstream in 5 months - on time and within budget. One benefit stemming from the expansion: production increased 87 per cent while operating and maintenance labour rose only 8 per cent."

A comprehensive mathematical model of the Sherritt-Gordon ammoniacal pressure leaching process at K winana Nickel Refinery has been constructed. The process is comprised of six autoclaves functioning as a three-stage leach circuit, operating over the temperature and pressure ranges of 85-95°C and 750-1000 kPa, respectively. The process chemistry forms a complex series-parallel reaction network, characterised by: (1) the gas-liquid mass transfer and reduction of oxygen, (2) the oxidation of eight distinct minerals, (3) the oxidation of sulphur, and successive reactions involving various intermediately oxidised sulphur species, and (4) the oxidation of Fe(II) to Fe(III), and subsequent precipitation as a hydrated ferric oxide. Material balances were developed for species in all three phases, and an energy balance to account for all reactions and phase conversions. The multiple convolution integral (MCI) statistical reactor model was employed for the scale-up of particle kinetics. The model has been validated against plant data, and simulation results are in agreement with plant performance.

"Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Limited is at present B,C.'s only asbestos mining company, and has been actively engaged in the management and operation of the Cassiar Mine since the early 1950's. The Cassiar operations are located between 3,500' and 6,600' elevation in a secluded mountainous area of northern B.C., approximately 100 miles by road southwest of Watson Lake in the Yukon Territory. Climatic conditions in this area range from mild warm in the summer, to extremely cold during the long winter period.The minesite itself is located over a mile above sea level at the top of McDame Mountain, where year round 24 hours per day miners extract the chrysotile ore from the surrounding waste by standard open pit techniques. The ore body dips into the mountain at about a 45° angle, and as the mining progresses, larger stripping ratios are required. Waste to ore ratio this year will be more than 10 to l whereas only a few years ago ratios of 3 or 4 to l were possible. After drilling, blasting, and loading by shovel onto trucks, the asbestos ore is transported to the Primary Crushing Plant for crushing prior to transport by aerial tramway more than three miles to the Concentrator and Mill in the valley below, where the fibre is extracted from the barren host rock serpentine and milled into numerous grades for shipment to asbestos users round the world. The major air usage is associated with the milling process, presently requiring over 500,000 CFM, with future requirements expected to exceed 840,000 CFM by the end of the decade."

"Some non-flotation chemistries are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust. Since the dosage levels are generally not very large, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect a specific chemical has on the productivity of the flotation circuit. Hudbay and Ashland Water Technologies developed a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5 ppm to 500 ppm). Laboratory results indicate that this protocol helps to predict the potential interference that a particular chemistry will have on the flotation circuit.INTRODUCTIONFrom a chemical perspective, flotation is a very complex system involving more than the reagents used for flotation. Along with collectors, frothers, modifiers, suppressants and activators, there can be antiscalants for water treatment, dust suppressants used in the mining process, residual flocculants from recycled thickener overflows, grinding aids, and many other types of chemicals that are added upstream of a flotation circuit. Although these other chemicals are usually used at very low doses, it is important to know if they affect the flotation process detrimentally in the event of a spill or a build up from recycled water.Laboratory flotation testing of these chemicals characterizes their effects, but testing at expected doses in the float can mask the effects of the chemicals in the plant. Also, simple tests that do not measure the kinetics of flotation do not reveal the effects the other chemicals have on the flotation circuit. Thus, a new flotation protocol was needed to expose the full effects of chemical additives and to assist in choosing the chemical with the lowest potential for a negative effect.FLOTATION KINETICSMeasuring recovery kinetics in a laboratory flotation cell is a well-established procedure: analyzing concentrates taken in a timed sequence to determine the recovery rate of individual cells in a flotation circuit. The recovery from the early flotation cells are a true measurement of how well a flotation chemical is performing. "1.1. WHAT ARE AGREEMENTS AND HOW ARE THEY FORMED?In order to have an agreement, at common law, there must be an offer, acceptance of that offer, and consideration passing between the parties. In addition, the material terms (i.e. the basics or substance) of the agreement must be discernible, preferably by means of documentation. Although these concepts may appear simple and straightforward, the law relating to them is voluminous and complex. Some brief comments are worthwhile.• Offer/acceptance: Both offer and acceptance should be in writing, but they need not be. The actions, conversations, and/or correspondence of the parties may constitute either or both of them. Notwithstanding, the local law or practice of a jurisdiction will impose some specific requirements for certain types of agreements. If these requirements are not met, the agreement may be unenforceable. For example, Ontario’s Mining Act requires transfers of unpatented mining claims to be evidenced in writing and recorded.1• Consideration: Consideration is usually thought of as being money, but it can be virtually anything, even “the premises” (i.e. the mutual covenants or promises contained in the agreement itself). In addition, if one party, relying upon the offer of another, does something to his detriment, then the doing of the act can be considered to be an acceptance of the offer and, under the legal concept of “detrimental reliance”, can also be consideration. Whether or not detrimental reliance exists will depend upon the circumstances of each case.2• Material terms: The requirement that the material terms of an agreement must be discernible does not mean that all of the terms of an agreement must be documented or even have been considered, just the basic or material ones. In addition, it will be up to a judge to decide what is material – not necessarily the parties. In order to establish the material terms, a Court may look at all relevant documentation and may hear oral evidence. It will resist “writing the agreement”"

"A modular gold processing unit (MGPU) was designed, installed and operated over an eight-month period by RSW-Béroma at the Granada mine located near Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. A description of the project geology, plant set up, as well as exploitation results, including productivity and profitability curves, are given for a small-scale mining operation in comparison with larger ones. IntroductionSmall-scale mining (SSM) is a widespread activity in Africa, Mexico, Central America and South America, where numerous small mineral deposits are exploited manually or by semimechanized methods. On the other hand, SSM is almost absent in Canada, where the mining industry traditionally exploits large deposits, using concentration plants with capacities of many thousands of tonnes per day. However, many small gold (and other metallic or industrial mineral) deposits are known in Canada. Their reserves are too small to justify the cost related to the construction of a standard mill and, if they are remote from a custom milling facility, they remain unexploited. With this in mind, RSW-Béroma has developed the modular gold processing unit (MGPU) that allows the profitable exploitation of small mineral deposits. The MGPU is the perfect tool for SSM and its main advantages are a much lower capital cost than a standard mill and its portability, which makes it easy to transport and reinstall on another site, once the exploitation of a small deposit is terminated.
