Due to detrimental effects of cyanidation process on the environment in gold industry, application of cyanide alternatives such as thiourea are being highly considered in recent projects. In this study, the extraction of gold from poly metal ore, using thiourea was precisely investigated. The representative sample contained 2.5 ppm Au and 160 ppm Ag. The sample was categorized as oxide gold ore, because the main part of its pyrite was changed to iron oxide and hydroxide such as goethite and lepidocrosite. According to mineralogy, the main gangue mineral was quartz. It shows that gold grains are free and interlocked with quartz matrix. Also, the presence of a high amount of silver in free and sulfide forms and also the low content of other sulfide minerals such as base metal sulfides is a remarkable point of these studies. In the gold extraction process with thiourea, there are several parameters that affect the rate of gold dissolution such as concentrations of thiourea as a gold lixiviant and ferric sulfate as an oxidant, pH and size fraction of feed and leaching time. The influence of these parameters on the gold dissolution rate were investigated and optimized. The results showed that the concentration of thiourea is the most influential parameter which could increase the gold recovery to 71% (at 10 g/kg sample). The optimal amount of ferric sulfate was determined as 6 g/kg sample. Also, the optimal levels of size fraction of feed and pH of solution were 88% under 75 micron and 2 as acidity; respectively. Leaching time was 6 hrs. In addition, this sample was leached with cyanide and the optimized values of size fraction of d88=75 microns, pH=10.45, 2500 ppm of sodium cyanide with time leaching of 24 hours were concluded for maximum recovery of gold in solution. Finally, the results of cyanidation tests were compared to the thiourea dissolution after optimizing all affected parameters in cyanidation process.

"Refratechnik, a leading German refractory company, acquired a majority shareholding in Baymag in 1979. This acquisition included the mining rights for a magnesite deposit of exceptionally high purity in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.The deposit, situated in the Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia, is of Cambrian age and has ore reserves of 50 million m. t. of magnesite. The Baymag magnesite deposit is one of the purest in the world. The deposit was opened up and mining commenced in early 1982. Production of various caustic calcined magnesia products in a rotary kiln operation in Exshaw, Alberta, was started in mid-1982. The product application ranges from pulp and paper production, to the chemical industry, and to animal feed supplements. Since the end of 1983, Baymag has produced high-quality refractory grade fused magnesium oxide f or specialty applications in the steel industry.IntroductionAlthough magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth and forms about 2.06% of the earth's crust, common knowledge about magnesium and especially magnesium oxide (MgO) as an industrial mineral is not widespread. The reason might be that, with the exception of magnesium metal as the element, magnesia products are not generally sold as final products to end-users, but rather are needed for the production of final products such as steel, cement, paper, etc. Therefore, some general comments are given about the different sources of MgO, the different products, world production and consumption , before Baymag specifics are addressed. Magnesium metal will not be discussed in this paper."

"Operating heavy equipment in Labrador, where the winters are 8 months long and the temperature frequently drops below -40°F (-40°C) for days and sometimes weeks presents unique problems in both the operation and maintenance junctions. Winterization programs must be well designed and implemented at the proper time. These programs must include the proper selection of fuel oil, engine oil, hydraulic oils, greases, cooling system fluids, etc. More often than not, modifications have to be made to the original equipment in order that it can be operated safely and economically in the Canadian North. Manufacturers usually design equipment for a less harsh environment and the user makes adaptations by trial and error.Operators have to be trained for the proper operation on ice- and snow-covered roads in an open-pit mine. Special emphasis must be put on haulage road conditions. In this paper, the authors will cover some specific maintenance procedures, equipment modifications and operator training problems experienced by the Iron Ore Company of Canada in its open-pit operation in Labrador.IntroductionT he Iron Ore Company of Canada is engaged in open-pit mining , concentrating and pelletizing of iron ore. The company operates in two provinces, Quebec and Newfoundland (Fig . 1) . The Knob Lake operation "", based in Schefferville, Quebec, has mine sites located both in Labrador and Quebec . The Caro l Lake Project is situated in Labrador, 25 kilometres east o f the Quebec border at Labrador City. Hydrometallurgical processes, i.e., Cu extraction from a mineral concentrate and Zn electrowinning, are coupled in a battery-like system. A naturally-sourced CuFeS2 concentrate mixed with activated carbon is used as a positive slurry electrode separated by a membrane from the negative compartment. The Zn is deposited on the negative Al current collector from the circulating solution containing 100 g L–1 Zn2+ in 0.2 M H2SO4. In this battery-like system, both CuFeS2 oxidation and Zn deposition are possible during the charging cycle. The additional benefit of this setup is the energy storage if discharged by re-dissolving the Zn in the negative compartment. Cyclic charge/discharge testing revealed oxidation of the mineral concentrate supported by the Zn2+/Zn redox reaction. The coulombic and energy efficiencies increased monotonically to 95.6% and 43%, respectively, with approximately 7% Cu extraction during the first 10 charge/discharge cycles (completed in 2.4 hours). The discharge energy density also increased from 2.7 to 36.2 mWh L–1. In the following 90 cycles, the low energy (~14%) and coulombic (~33%) efficiencies that were obtained confirmed the progress of irreversible reactions e.g. Cu extraction from the mineral concentrate. Overall, approximately 16% Cu was extracted from the mineral concentrate over 100 charge/discharge cycles (or about 12.2 hours). INTRODUCTION Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) is the main economic copper-bearing mineral, which is generally processed through pyro-metallurgical methods to produce Cu. However, environmental challenges with smelting, depletion of high-grade ores and a large number of impurities (some toxic) have resulted in continued research aimed at the development of hydrometallurgical technologies to process CuFeS2. There are a number of different proposed hydrometallurgical routes in the literature to treat CuFeS2 concentrates, but only a few have attained commercial acceptance (Dreisinger, 2006). Zn is another commercially important metal that is mainly produced via acid leaching of roasted sphalerite (ZnS). The pregnant leach solution is rigorously purified to remove all the soluble metal impurities, particularly those that are electrochemically more noble than Zn and present large kinetic activity towards H2 evolution (Hu & Piron, 1992; Mackinnon, Brannen, & Fenn, 1987; Mureşan, Maurin, Oniciu, & Gaga, 1996). Metal impurities such as Cu, Co, Ni, Cd, Pb, Sb, As, Ge and Fe etc., if they exist in the leach liquor beyond the tolerance limits, can decrease the current efficiency during electrowinning and deteriorate the deposit quality (Alfantazi & Dreisinger, 2001). A complete flow sheet, describing the process steps of Zn metal production from mine site to pure metal is presented elsewhere (Brown, Meisenhelder, & Yao, 1983).

"This paper describes a study carried out to determine the behaviour of Cu-Ni mill tailings during natural and flocculated sedimentations. Settling rates were examined under various conditions through standard laboratory batch settling tests. Flocculation was found to improve the sedimentation process significantly, but its effectiveness depended on several factors such as the pulp density of feed, the type and dosage of flocculating reagent, the pH of pulp, the intensity of mixing flocculant with tailings sand the use of stirring during compaction.It is shown that. for a sedimentation process taking place under given conditions, underflow pulp density (P) and sedimentation time (t) are related by the expression P = k.tn, where k and n are constants. A procedure is described for the use of this expression in thickener size estimations. IntroductionOften a considerable proportion of the mill feed is disposed as tailing, because the valuable mineral recovered usually forms a small fraction of the ore. Moreover, wet concentration processes result in liquid wastes that are several times more voluminous than the ore itself. Thus the handling and disposal of these wastes become an important cost item in most milling operations. The principal unit process employed in tailing disposal is solid-liquid separation which is traditionally carried out by gravity sedimentation in thickeners or tailing dams. Direct disposal of tailings into tailing dams is common practice where sufficiently large areas of land are available but it frequently becomes more economical or practical to densify the tailings in a thickener beforehand.Successful thickener operation depends essentially on correct thickener size which is in turn governed by the sedimentation characteristics of the tailings handled. Flocculation can aid the sedimentation process and bring about significant savings in thickener size, but its effective use requires a detailed study to identify the optimum conditions of application."

ONLY IN THE Province of Saskatchewan is natural sodium sulphate found in Canada in amounts large enough to make recovery economically sound. Geologists have estimated that the numerous deposits within the Province contain upwards of 200 million tons of Glauber's salt. There are twenty-one deposits in the Province which contain 500,-000 or more tons and about two dozen with lesser amounts. The first recorded production of sodium sulphate in Saskatchewan was in 1918. The company concerned, and others that attempted to develop the industry in its early stages, were unsuccessful. Their failures were caused by two main factors -lack of knowledge of efficient operating methods and the unstable market situation for the finished product. Today, the situation is changed in both respects and the product, commonly referred to as 'saltcake", is a very important chemical requirement of many industries throughout the world. Before proceeding with remarks on manufacturing methods it should be stated that, although this is a general paper on the manufacturing methods and end uses of the saltcake produced in the Province, the writer is, of course, more familiar with the plants operated by Saskatchewan Minerals than with other operations and perhaps may be excused for dealing more particularly with the plants of that Compa11y.

"Laboratory testing, by Lakefield Research determined that, in spite of the relatively high pyrite content of the Golden Rose (GR) orebody, it would respond well to gravity concentration followed by either direct cyanidation or cyanidation of a flotation concentrate.Economics favoured the former choice which became the adopted process flowsheet.During the latter stage of the feasibility study, the Dekalb 500 tpd copper flotation mill became available in the Highland Valley of British Columbia. This plant was purchased by Emerald Lake Resources, and was moved to the Golden Rose minesite.The crushing and grinding circuit were retained and the original flotation circuit was replaced with a 400 mtd gravity plus cyanidation circuit. The plant commissioning commenced in August 1987, and by early September was processing 300 tpd.HistoryThe Golden Rose Mine was operated by Cominco during the period 1935 to 1941 processing 146000 tons grading DAD oz/t Au at a rate of 110 tpd .The process flowsheet consisted of gravity plus amalgamation followed by cyanidation.Metallurgical TestingThe underground mining areas were below the level of Emerald Lake, and had flooded on abandonment in 1942.Samples for metallurgical testing were collected from exposed faces underground once the mine had been dewateredin 1984.In spite of the anticipated high pyrite content of the ore samples, it was apparent from the success of the previous operation that the pyrite did not interfere with the gold recovery.Laboratory testing, at Lakefield, determined that, from a technical perspective, two metallurgical options existed, as shown in Tables I and 2.Note that the very high pyrite content of the ore precluded the possible direct marketing of concentrate. The process flowsheet, therefore, had to contain a cyanidation circuit for the operation to succeed financially.Although the anticipated metallurgy was excellent with either option, the 2.1 % increase in gold recovery with the gravity plus cyanidation option made this the clear choice."

"The influence of flux addition on the structure and properties of pellets produced from low silica specularite with peat moss and bentonite as binders was investigated. Specific pellets basicities in the range of 0.4 to 3.2 were obtained by the addition of limestone or a combination of dolomite and limestone as flux. A t basicities < 1.6, the bonding in the pellets was provided by a glassy silicate phase. At basicities =1.6, calcium ferrites were the predominant bonding phase. When dolomite was added as a flux, presence of magnesia-ferrite was noted. The reduction behaviour of pellets at different basicities was found to be influenced by the type of flux and binder. The pellet compression strength and swelling characteristics were improved with increased basicity.IntroductionThe properties of iron ore pellets are influenced by the type and nature of the ore or concentrate, additives and their subsequent treatment to produce pellets. The interaction between various constituents of the concentrate and additives, i.e. iron oxides, gangue and fluxes etc. result in the formation of various mineralogical phases which affect the degree and nature of bonding achieved in the pellet and the structure and distribution of pores. The pellet properties such as pellet strength and reducibility are influenced by the extent and type of bonding achieved between the ore particles. In view of the present emphasis on the production of high quality pellets to meet progressively stringent quality control requirements, it is essential to investigate the effect of additives on the bonding mechanism and properties of the pellets.In the past, the effects of additives on the bonding mechanism of pellets have been investigated. It is important to note that the conditions and parameters to be controlled are typical of a given concentrate/ore. In this paper, the results of the investigation on characterization of fluxed pellets produced from a low silica specularite concentrate are reported.This investigation was also aimed at assessing the suitability of peat moss for use as a binder for the production of low silica fluxed pellets. Peat moss is abundantly available in the vicinity of iron ore mines in Quebec and encouraging results have been obtained du ring the production of high silica acid and fluxed pellets."

"Microbiological activities affecting the performance of materials have been encountered in diverse situations within Ontario Hydro. Case histories of bacterial problems which are presented include ground rod corrosion at transformer stations, corrosion of a bare steel cooling water intake structure in Lake Huron and corrosion of steel components in a nuclear generation station vacuum building. Possible microbiological activities which may affect the corrosion behaviour of containers for the disposal of nuclear fuel waste in the future are discussed, as are bacterial actions suspected of causing an odour problem in residential water heaters.IntroductionBacteria are ubiquitous. Except by use of sterilization methods, bacteria -free environments are no t possible to find. Bacteria lie dormant in hostile environments, spread easily through air and water currents and reproduce rapidly under favourable conditions. Although different types of bacteria have different preferable conditions for growth, they are highly adaptive and in general, whenever there is a source of water and carbon (carbon dioxide or organic matter), there will be bacterial activities . These activities often induce or enhance costly metallic corrosion in industries and water odour problems in rural water supplies . Underground structures and systems in contact with natural water or water containing organic matter are most susceptible to bacterial attack.The types of metal-degrading bacteria , their characteristics and the conditions for growth have been reviewed extensively in the literature(1,2,3). There are several often encountered groups of bacteria which, through their metabolic processes, may lead to the degradation of metals. A large variety of bacteria produce corrosive in organic or organic acids as waste, such as the well known formation of sulphuric ac id by aerobic sulphur oxidizers . Anaerobic sulphate reducers produce hydrogen sulphide which is corrosive and has an obnoxious smell, slime-forming bacteria from slime which shelters sulphate reducers and iron bacteria oxidize ferrous to ferric ion which precipitates as hydrated oxides creating oxygen concentration cells . The following are bacterial problems encountered in Ontario Hydro. Although the number of recognized cases has been few, they show the diversity of location and environment where bacterial problems could arise. These include ground rod corrosion at transformer stations, corrosion of bare steel in a water intake structure, corrosion of steel in a nuclear generation station vacuum building and an odour problem in residential hot water tanks. In addition, possible bacterial- enhanced corrosion in containers for future disposal of nuclear fuel wastes are also discussed."

"Canada has a per capita GDP second only to Japan among the G7 countries and a positive trade balance which ranks third among the world&apos;s major economies. International trade represents a very large part of the national economy and as a proportion of GDP is larger than that of all the other G7 countries with the exception of Germany. On the negative side the Canadian current account deficit relative to the size of the economy is significantly worse than that of all major industrial countries, due mainly to the cost of servicing an immense foreign debt and to a large and worsening negative trade balance in manufacturing.The outflow of money may be reduced by increasing the productivity and competitiveness of those sectors of the economy in which Canada already has a leading competitive position and which have the potential for further growth. The mining industry is uniquely qualified in this respect in that Canada is the western world&apos;s largest producer of metals and mineral products and has the geology and the exploration skill to replenish reserves assuming that an adequate level of investment is maintained. In 1989 the minerals industry contributed $8 billion to the country&apos;s balance of payments and with the exception of forestry is the only sector of the economy which has shown consistently increasing foreign earnings over the long term.In recent years there has been a decline in exploration in Canada and a significant increase in countries such as Chile. The demand for hard currency to finance the development of the newly emerging capitalist economies of the CIS and Eastern Europe is also driving these countries to seek foreign investment to allow them to exploit their natural wealth more efficiently. Canada is therefore facing growing international competition for risk capital and in the future its trade surplus will probably decline in the face of lower cost foreign production.Canada rightly exercises a high level of environmental control on its mining operations; however a significant deterrent to investment is the fundamentally unjust application of the many provincial and federal environmental laws, under which a mining company, even if it takes every measure to protect the environment, runs the risk of eternal and unlimited future liability. If this situation is not rectified the effect will be an increase in global pollution as mines in countries with more lax application of law and regulations controlling environmental damage replace those of Canada. Tax benefits and incentives are a more efficient means than arbitrary regulations in minimizing environmental damage."

Depressants play a crucial role in the flotation of PGM bearing ores as they prevent naturally floatable gangue (NFG) from reporting to the concentrate. This action is regarded as critically important because less dilution of the concentrate means lower costs for downstream processes. However, abnormal water conditions (such as high concentrations of ions) in the flotation system can modify the selectivity of these depressants. It is well known that the existence of selected electrolytes in water can alter the behaviour of some polysaccharide depressants by enhancing their adsorption onto gangue minerals and thereby prevent naturally floatable gangue from moving into the froth phase. Concurrently these same electrolytes may enhance frothability, owing to their stabilising effect on the bubbles within the system. Plant water at various ionic strengths was investigated against depressant type and dosage in order to understand electrolyte-depressant interactive effects during the flotation of a Merensky ore, using entrainment, rate of NFG recovery, and total gangue recovery as proxies. The study showed that the rate of NFG recovery per unit mass of water decreased with increasing ionic strength at all dosages, however the total amount of gangue reporting to the concentrate increased with increasing ionic strength at all depressant dosages. Thus, this paper attempts to consider the effects of both ionic strength and depressant dosage as individual factors within flotation. It further looks to investigate whether any interactive effects exists between these two factors when considered simultaneously.

"IntroductionThis paper is intended to cover questions raised by operating staff at various installations and is not intended to give comprehensive coverage of power plant and power system design. The paper is concerned mainly with the electrics , although a brief section gives the reasons for selection of diesels rather than other prime movers.The material is not new but brings out points which seem to be raised regularly during the design , commissioning and operation o f a new plant. Diesels versus other Prime MoversDiesel-electric plant for the mining industry falls into two major categories -emergency power and prim e power.1) Emergency power (for use only when the regular utility supply has failed) requires reliable starting and operation and reasonable first cost. Fuel economy and maintenance are of little importance as the machine(s) generate few kilowatt hours only. The diesel&apos;s competition in this field is the gas turbine, however diesels are more widely used than gas turbines in this application.2) Prime power is a different situation as the bottom line of total cost is highly affected by fuel costs.In general , mines which are within reasonable transmission distance of an existing utility find the lowest net cost result s from hooking up to the utility. If a min e is remote from an electric utility then the possible alternatives are:a) Hydro- electric power if there is a site capable of development at reasonable cost including the cost of transmission facilities. Such sites are not common, but brief and inexpensive considerationof this possibility is warranted .b) Diesel power with consideration of different grades of fuel.c) Thermal (steam) power generation from coal or oil.d) Gas turbines.In addition to the above there is the possibility of wind power (as a supplementary source) and a number of technologies which may become feasible in the future (e.g. small nuclear plants, fuel cells). For obvious reasons, small isolated generating systems required for remote mines, tend to lean to conservative technology.Among the fossil fuel plants, the diesel enjoys advantage on over-all costs as summarized in Table 1."

This paper presents the results of a new method that has been tested to recover metallic cobalt lost by diamond beads from rock cuttings. When dimension stones are cut using diamond wire saws, the beads become worn and, before the end of their cycle life, lose a certain amount of material; this material is prevalently made up of sintered metal and diamonds. The material is then washed away, together with rock debris, in a dilute pulp. In effect, this process involves the dispersion of economically valuable, but potentially polluting, materials (such as cobalt) that are used to confer indispensable technological features to the beads. This current research aims to develop a waste-processing pilot plant (High-gradient Magnetic Separator or HGMS) to recover metallic components from the pulp by means of a suitable separation. The research\u2019s purposes are two-fold: a. to remove the polluting components from the rock debris before their disposal and b. to start a recycling process of the valuable metals.

Anglovaal Minerals acquired the Nkana slag dump from Zambia Consolidated Copper mines (ZCCM) in 1998 and embarked on an ambitious project to pioneer the recovery of cobalt from slag using DC smelting technology. Anglovaal Research Laboratories performed initial pioneering smelting tests in a 250 kW DC furnace over a 3-year period before engaging Mintek for three piloting campaigns at the 1.5 MW level. Mintek had previously developed a reductive smelting process, patented in 1995, using a DC arc furnace for the recovery of cobalt from slags. The results of the pilot-plant test campaigns were used as the basis for engineering the commercial 40 MW operation installed at Chambishi Metals plc in Zambia in 2001. This paper traces the development of understanding of the metallurgical fundamentals ultimately used to predict furnace performance, reviews some of the extreme technical challenges faced, how solutions were identified and highlights some of the critical issues identified during piloting and how these impacted both positively and negatively on the final commercial operation.

"Geological material can be subjected to some different loading conditions, mainly due to three inter-related physical processes which are mechanical, thermal, and hydrological. Freezing and thawing process of rock that occurs in sub-zero temperature condition may contain some or all those three physical processes depended on its initial condition. Those inter-related physical processes may lead the ground into failures. Therefore, understanding the physical properties such as deformation process of geological material under freezing and thawing condition is required for the artificial ground freezing projects and engineering construction activity in the natural cold region.In order to study the strain characteristic of rocks during freezing and thawing process, a series of freezing and thawing experiments of core samples of three different rock types and mortar has been conducted under varying temperature from -20 °C to +20 °C. Four core sample types are Sandstone, Granite, Tuff, and Mortar with 50 mm diameter and 50 mm height, which were naturally dried before the freezing-thawing experiment. Freezing-thawing experiment was conducted by submerging the vinyl covered core samples into a temperature-controlled liquid coolant box. Firstly, temperature of liquid (brine solution) was set at -20 °C so that the temperature of subjected sample was decreasing to as low as -20 °C. And then the temperature of brine was returning to initial room temperature after the coolant system was stopped. Strain gauge and thermo couple were attached on the core’s perimeter to measure strains and temperature changes.Sandstone and Mortar samples show relatively similar results than other two samples. Both presents linearly shrink with the temperature decrease and expand almost to its initial condition with the temperature increase. Granite shows less-linear strain-temperature relationship during thawing process, while the Tuff sample shows abrupt strain increase during thawing process on the temperature higher than +10 °C. Thermal expansion value of each rock types were obtained by fitting the major strain-temperature relationship on -19 °C to +10 °C temperature range. Overall, anisotropic deformation was observed on the entire samples and possible mechanisms for each hysteresis characteristic are discussed, which need to be confirmed by further experiments."

"Annual mining revenue can be computed by formulae relating metal prices, smelting schedules, concentrate grade and recovery to known ore grade and an assessment of core samples. Operating costs at different daily tonnages are related to orebody shape, mining method, milling process and general plant services. Capital costs are related to sizing of mining equipment, mine development, plant-site topography, climate and accessibility, plant services and personnel housing. IntroductionA crude guide to the average 1978 cost of mine projects is shown in Figure 1, but the costs of many mine projects have differed widely from the graphed average costs of $800,000 T0.6 for underground mine/mill projects and $400,000 T 0.6 for low-grade open-pit mine/mill projects.High mine project costs and high operating costs are characteristic of open-pit mines with high stripping ratios, underground mines with thin orebodies, mills with complex metallurgy, and projects located in isolated regions with severe climate, mountainous topography, and lacking access to existing roads, towns and electric power. When none of these adverse conditions prevailed, the mine project cost was typically much less than the graphed average cost. Virtually all the conditions likely to cause high capital and operating costs are known from knowledge of the local topography, climate or accessibility, or can be assessed by tests on core samples, as soon as the orebody has been outlined by drilling .A more accurate estimate of over-all project capital cost and operating cost can be made from a summation of items of cost after judging the effect of specific local conditions on each item of capital and operating cost. This paper offers guides in judging the effect of local conditions on the sizing and 1978 cost of specific items of capital cost and operating cost and operating cost of mine projects. When the specific items of capital cost and operating cost are totaled and measured against expected net revenue and taxes over the life of the mine using the net-present-value or discount-cash-flow methods, the result should show whether the mine project development is clearly feasible, doubtfully feasible or clearly uneconomic. If the development of the mine project is clearly feasible, or probably feasible, a detailed feasibility study by experienced consulting engineers should be commissioned before any financial commitments are made; but if project development appears to be uneconomic, the time and cost of a detailed feasibility study is not warranted."

"The effect of the copper and magnesium contents and quenching rate during quenching on the age hardening behavior of 2000 series aluminum alloys was investigated. For the higher copper-containing specimens as conventional alloys, like AA2024, precipitation of the stable phases increased as the quenching rate decreased under the as-quenched conditions. The maximum hardness after the artificial aging of air cooled(AC) specimens was much lower than that of the water quenched(WQ)specimens. On the other hand, for the lower copper-containing specimens, coarse precipitation did not increase even in the case of the AC. The age hardening behaviors of the WQ and AC were very similar such that the maximum hardness and aging rate were almost the same. Many parts of the fine precipitates that increased the hardness were thought to be the GPB zone or fine S’ phase for the WQ and relatively coarse S’ phase for the AC. From the calculated CCT(continuous cooling transformation)diagrams, the lower copper-containing specimens could maintain the copper and magnesium in the solid solution state during the AC, so they could be quenched at a rather slower quenching rate like the AC.INTRODUCTIONThe 2000 series aluminum alloys, containing copper and magnesium as the major chemical components, are some of the well-known heat treatable aluminum alloys. These alloys have a high quenching sensitivity, thus the age hardening ability of these alloys decreases with as low quenching rate. To prevent the decrease of the age hardening ability, quenching is done by a method such as water quenching, which is not very efficient in an industrial situation, because the method requires such large equipment. For these alloys, reducing the quenching sensitivity helps them to be produced in a rather convenient way. For example, 6000 series alloys such as A6063 have low quenching sensitivity, thus they could be quenched by only air cooling just after extrusion and they do not need water quenching. Based on these reasons, investigations of these alloys with high copper and magnesium contents have been conducted in the past to find a way to lower the quenching sensitivity by adding transition elements such as manganese, chromium and zirconium (Kanno, Suzuki, & Itoh, 1986; Suzuki & Itoh, 1986; Kanno, Sakuma, Muromachi, & Watanabe, 1988). However, very few studies have focused on the quenching sensitivity of the lower copper and magnesium containing alloys because of their usage for structural components with high strength, and most of the past studies have used only the fast quenching method like water quenching. On the other hand, from our recent results, there is a possibility to lower the quenching sensitivity of 2000 series alloys with lower alloying elements. In this paper, the effect of the copper and magnesium contents with lower alloying elements and quenching rate, especially in case of slower quenching rate than conventional quenching method, on the age hardening behavior of the 2000 series alloys is investigated by the hardness measurement, structure observation and thermal analysis."

"THE Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation, through its subsidiaries, the Old Sydney Collieries and the Dominion Coal Company Limited, produces 4% million tons of coal annually from eight submarine collieries situated on the eastern coast of Cape Breton Island. The present workings have a frontage of 20 miles and extend 31/2 miles under the Atlantic ocean on gradients varying from 4 deg. to 24 deg. To date, some of the workings have reached .a depth of cover up to 2,800 feet.The pitching seams, the annual seaward advance, the resulting depth of cover and the rdatively soft roof and floor have necessitated the adoption of extensive longwall mining, with room-and-pillar mining con-fined to areas above the 1,000 foot cover line, where 60 per cent of the -coal is left standing in pillars to support the ocean floor. Longwall mining accounts for 87 per cent of the total production with the remaining outputs obtained from room-and-pillar work and the narrow work development. Seventy-four per cent of the longwall production and 41 per -cent of the room and development production is completely mechanized.Although 2 tons of water is pumped from the collieries for each ton of coal mined, the working sections are relatively dry as the heavy make of water is essentially surface drain-age from the land crop areas. The dry workings and the long haulage distances, which in many cases exceed 4 miles, have resulted in a continuing programme to combat the dust hazard, both at the working face and along the mine roadways."

In order properly to consider the subject, it should first be &apos;set in proper perspective. Why are Prospects Examined? Prospects are examined to determine whether they may contain economic concentrations of metals or minerals, the legitimate mining business being run, pretty largely, to make money. Next to food and clothing, modern civilization is based on metals, with which are included in this discussion minerals, oils, and fuels. A constant and increasing demand for the common metals requires the location of replacements for depleted orebodies, while the use and appreciation of new metals brings increasing demand for them. Aluminium is a good example of a metal which has, within recent years, made great progress. Today, we are becoming increasingly aware of magnesium, chromium, tungsten, thallium, and other lesser known, metals.
