Available literature on the effect of re-entrainment on overall airborne dust concentration in mine airways or the fundamental mechanisms of coal dust re-entrainment in mine atmosphere is scant (Shankar and Ramani, 1991). Therefore, as part of the Respirable Dust Center's ongoing research, the following three-part study was undertaken: •a study of the re-entrainment phenomena of anthracite and bituminous coal dust particles in a wind tunnel under the influence of varying air velocities; •a study of the same in the Lake Lynn Laboratory Mine of the USBM with both air flow and walking by personnel causing re-entrainment; and •the mathematical modeling and computer simulation of the re-entrainment phenomenon. In this paper, results from the re-entrainment studies in the wind tunnel and the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine are presented. Comparing the results from the two studies, it was observed that increasing the air velocity increased the rate of re-entrainment (Shankar and Ramani, 1994a) and the rate of re-entrainment decreased with the time of exposure of the source dust to the flowing air. In addition, when the source dust was composed of particles of different sizes, the airborne dust concentrations due to re-entrainment were higher than when the source dust was composed of particles of the same size. The contribution of airborne dust concentration due to airflow was negligible compared to the contribution due to walking.

During the late 1960s the mining industry became interested in USBM's efforts to develop the gold-silver heap leaching process. In the last 10 years, successful commercial heap leaching applications increased. The process provides a relatively low-capital means of processing treatable ores with reasonable operating costs. Present gold and silver prices compared to capital and operating costs favor the continued growth of the heap leaching method. The heap leaching process is defined as the percolation leaching of relatively coarse gold-silver ore piled on an impervious surface. To date, dilute alkaline cyanide solution is the lixiviant of choice. Other leaching reagents such as thiourea and hypo have been suggested, although they are not currently used in heap leaching practice. Ores may he run-of-mine in size or crushed as fine as about 10 mm. Gold and silver-bearing so¬lutions draining from the heaps may be processed in activated carbon columns to recover the metals, followed by stripping and metal recovery, or treated by the Merrill-Crowe zinc dust precipitation method. All solutions are generally recycled to the leaching step, and the heap leaching system is relatively easy to control from an environmental viewpoint. One advantage of the heap leaching process is its flexibility. Plants may be very simple, comprising leaching of uncrushed ore on a locally-obtained clay-lined pad and shipment of gold and silver recovered in the form of loaded carbon or zinc precipitates; such a plant would have a relatively low capital investment. More elaborate plants for larger ore bodies may be planned to include crushing, cyclic pad use, and done gold-silver recovery. General planning is similar in each case. This article outlines some key factors in designing heap leaching operations and discusses how these factors are applied to develop a working operation. Since individual design requirements and local costs vary so much, only a few general comments on costs are included.

The various copper-cobalt ores mined by Gecamines, together with typical plant applications and results, are briefly described. Intensive laboratory investigations have been undertaken in recent years to improve the metallurgical performances of the various concentrators. As a result of these tests, it was shown that the flotation of the siliceous oxide ores could be improved by increasing the efficiency of the palm oil collector (energetic conditioning, chemical emulsifier, petroleum sulfonate addition) and by varying the froth depth in the cells. A new flowsheet incorporating these modifications and a regrinding stage has been approved for the rehabilitation of the Kolwezi concentrator. For what affects dolomitic oxide ores, hydroxamates were tested as secondary collectors and, based on successful laboratory results, plant trials were run but failed due to excessive frothing. In other plant tests, xanthates were replaced by a xanthate- fatty acid mixture; plant trials over more than one year proved successful for copper, but not for cobalt. Mercaptans were tested as secondary collectors for the sulfides flotation from sulfide or mixed oxide-sulfide ores; laboratory results proved successful but, to date, no plant test has been run.

Roadheader machines have a specific place in modern tunnelling, not simply as a compromise between drill and blast techniques and full face machines, but as an economic and versatile form of mechanised tunnelling where the method of excavation is easily integrated with tunnelling operations. In the past, roadheaders have been subjected to misuses by engineers who failed to realise that, as in all mechanised tunnelling, a planned and systematic approach is essential if the full potential of these machines is to be gained. An increasing awareness of this, together with the introduction of the more powerful roadheader carrying their cutting potential into the hard range of rock is changing this situation and now makes the prospect of using roadheaders particularly attractive (1). The advantages gained by employing these machines can be considerable and Table 1 lists some of them. This table illustrates that from both cost, and installation points of view, the roadheader has considerable benefits over the full face machine. However, the principal advantage gained is in broken ground where heavy supports can be installed immediately at the tunnel face. In addition, access for planned maintenance and repairs to most working parts of the machine is at a premium and average machine utilisations of 40 - 60% can be expected. In comparison to drill and blast methods, up to 40% better progress can be regularly achieved, and the subsequent savings in overbreak costs alone would more than pay for the cost of a roadheader used to drive a 3km long tunnel. Stratabound uranium deposits consist generally of two comingled geologic and statistical populations. Barren zones, usually having radiometric assays too low for recording on digitized logs, comprise a large portion of a mineralized stratum. In between are mineralized zones; where the grades are distributed essentially lognormally. Estimation of open-pit ore reserves requires the prediction of the tonnages of selective mining units (the smallest mined volume which may be segregated as ore or waste) and their grades within panels of convenient size for open pit planning and economic analysis. The proportionate tonnage of mineralized selective mining units within each panel can be predicted by kriging an an indicator function assigned to each composite (1 if mineralized, 0 if barren). Next, using logarithms of mineralized assays, the conditional lognormal distribution of grades of mineralized selective mining units can be found. Using this distribution and the krigedestimate of the probability a selective mining unit is mineralized, the grade and tonnage of selective- mining units above any cutoff can be predicted. A case study illustrating this two- step procedure is presented for the Imouraren uranium deposit located in the Republic of Niger. Using cross validation, the estimation procedures were checked and were shown to be adequately accurate for mine planning purposes.

The increasing popularity of column flotation as an efficient and profitable mineral beneficiation technique has resulted in the need to perform a study of basic column operating parameters in order to understand mineral behavior in a column. Variation of column rougher flotation parameters on the Nevada Fish Creek fluorite and Utah Collins manganese ores enabled characterization of four beneficiation zones within a column flotation cell. Although specific mineral behavior in each zone was peculiar to the mineral system involved, particle retention time predominantly affected both manganese and fluorite recoveries in the collection zones of the column while enhancing mineral grades in the cleaning zones. Column parameters such as column length, feed injection location, and tailings recirculation velocity were inherently linked to particle retention time and retention time distribution, both of which affected mineral recovery. Froth depth had a discernible effect on fluorite concentrate grades; as froth depth increased, fluorite grades increased. Wash water additions affected both fluorite and manganese recoveries and fluorite grade. Axial mixing drastically reduced fluorite and manganese recoveries due to short circuiting of some of the feed slurry in the column.

The current U.S. Bureau of Mines research program is addressing the recovery of flake graphite from kish, a steelmaking waste product, and the use of zeolites from abundant domestic natural deposits for efficiently cleaning up mining industry wastewater. The United States is almost totally dependent on imports for its graphite needs, but this may change depending upon the results from a pilot plant being constructed by industry using Bureau technology. Standard mineral processing techniques were applied by the Bureau to recover high-quality flake graphite from kish. It was considered innovative enough to receive an R&D 100 Award in 1992, and its commercialization has the potential to supply the total U.S. demands for graphite many times over. Zeolites have ion exchange properties similar to ion exchange resins, but are less expensive and available in large quantities. Samples of naturally occurring zeolites were tested for their efficiency in removing metal ions from synthetic and industrial waste solutions. The tests focused on defining their selecting, loading, eluting, and regenerating characteristics, and on developing a method for recovering the metal ions as added value products. The results showed that the removal of metal ions with zeolites from acid rock drainage (ARD) solutions is technically feasible and that this technique has the potential for being used in an integrated chemical treatment systems approach either as a primary or secondary cleaning step.

INTRODUCTION Much of present fracture toughness testing con¬cerns chevron notched specimens (Newman Jr., 1984) since these, in principle, require neither fatigue precracking nor more registration than failure load to determine fracture toughness. Two such specimens which can be made from diamond drilled rock cores with minimal machining are the Short Rod (Barker, 1977) and the Chevron Edge Notch Round Bar in Bend¬ing or CENRBB Specimen (Ouchterlony, 1980). Even if the precracking property is especially valuable for a material like rock, practice has made the relative advantages of these chevron notched specimens much less apparent (Ouchterlony, 1982; Ouchterlony and Sun, 1983). Enough remains, however, to have the Commission on Testing Methods of the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) focus on them as standard configurations in a "Suggested Method for Determining Fracture Tough¬ness of Rock Material", which is in preparation. This paper presents material which supports the ISRM effort: 1. An experimental compliance calibration of the Chevron Bend (CENRBB or CB for short) and re¬sulting formulas. 2. Specimen tolerances, evaluation formulas, and loading rate requirements relating to both Short Rod and Chevron Bend Specimens of suggest¬ed standard proportions. 3. Some fracture toughness values obtained with the Chevron Bend Specimen. This material is mainly based on two reports (Ouchterlony, 1984 and 1985). The 1997 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) was held at the Mirage Hotel, Las Vegas, NV. The RETC is a biennial event jointly sponsored by SME and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Conference attendance was 573 members, nonmembers and students, an increase of seven attendees from the 1995 conference in San Francisco, CA. Exhibitors occupied 51 booths at the Las Vegas RETC. The 1997 conference encompassed 58 presentations in 15 sessions. Participants were given details on achievements and advances that have resulted in new design solutions, alternative work practices and increased productivity within the industry. The page at the end of this article tells how to get your copy of the RETC proceedings, either hardbound or on CD-ROM. Or, if you wish, for the first time a CD-ROM is available with the complete RETC proceedings from 1972 to 1997. This two-disk, archival volume has key-word search capability, is in portable file format and is compatible with PC and Macintosh platforms. RETC program sessions included design and planning, ground support, tunnel boring machine (TBM) case histories, conventional excavation, new technology, difficult ground, geotechnical, shafts and raises, future/special projects, new Austrian tunneling method, international projects, soft ground case histories and water and gas. An operational 9 meter (30-foot) high gold heap leach pile was investigated by excavating test pits up to 6 meters (20 feet) deep, obtaining bulk and relatively undisturbed thin wall drive samples, and observing the ore distribution patterns exposed in the test pit walls. The clayey ore is crushed, agglomerated with lime and cement, and deposited on the leach pads using a radial stacker. Laboratory tests performed included moisture-density, gradation, compaction, Atterberg limits, permeability (constant and falling head), and triaxial strength tests. Discussion is presented on the effects of agglomeration on the permeability and strength characteristics of the in-place ore. Also discussed is the effect of deposition of the ore using the radial stacker.

In July, 1988, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Advisory Committee on Standards and Regulations for Diesel-Powered Equipment in Underground Coal Mines recommended that the Secretary of Labor set in motion a mechanism whereby a diesel particulate standard can be set. Prerequisite to establishing a standard would be the development and evaluation of instrumentation to measure diesel particulate. In response, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, Dust Division, has been evaluating instrumentation that can be used to determine diesel particulate levels in underground mines. This instrumentation employs the principle of impaction to separate particles by size, thereby, separating the diesel and nondiesel particulate. Separation of the particulate by size was chosen because diesel particulate is generally less than 1.0 micrometer in size. No other methods have been developed to successfully distinguish between the coal and diesel particulate. MSHA developed an impactor that is inexpensive and compatible with existing pumps and filter holders. The instrumentation evaluation has primarily focused on the repeatability and performance of several personal dust samplers. The samplers tested include the Sierra-Andersen Model 298 personal impactor and MSHA developed personal impactor. The MSHA impactor is inexpensive and compatible with the existing pumps and filter holders. In addition to evaluating the precision and performance of these instruments, tests have been conducted to determine background levels of submicron particulate in nondieselized coal mines and to measure the submicron particulate content in dieselized coal mines. Tests were conducted in coal mines where diesel equipment was used only in outby areas and also in coal mines where diesel equipment was used for face haulage. This paper describes the results of the tests and provides a description of the instrument at ion used to conduct the tests.

For the past few years, the Cyprus Bagdad Copper Company began experiencing a significant "ore-dilution" problem from its low grade open- pit copper mine located at Bagdad, Arizona. To pinpoint the causes of this dilution, a study was initiated to investigate as well as to improve in-pit ore-waste selection-procedures using conditionally simulated ore-bodies. Prior to the actual use of conditional simulation; a comparison of different estimation methods for a mined-out area in the pit was performed. Specifically, kriging estimates were compared against the original estimates of the company which were based on the polygonal approach. The results of this comparison clearly identified part of the so- called "ore-dilution" problem, which was the initial over-estimation of average ore grades from blast rounds, using the polygonal approach. The results from the use of conditionally simulated orebodies demonstrated that the "ore-dilution" problem can be reduced by more than half if in-pit ore- waste selection is based on the kriged estimates rather than the polygonal estimates. This simulation study also showed that the current use of the polygonal approach has the effect of shipping a larger tonnage of lower grade material to the mill.

Since the advent of longwall mining systems in the United States, mine operators are increasingly relying on methane drainage techniques to supplement the ventilation system. The most commonly used technique is the vertical gob borehole. The number and spacing of vertical gob boreholes per panel is generally based on experience and underground conditions. To design a more efficient methane drainage systems, mine operators must accurately determine methane gas produced. Thus, mine operators must monitor gas flow and methane gas concentration on every vertical gob borehole on active panels at least once or twice during each 8-hr shift. As the mine grows, it is possible to have more than one operating longwall and many vertical gob boreholes. Thus, daily visits to each vertical gob borehole site can become very time consuming. During weekends when methane gas concentrations typically drop because there is no mining activity, borehole sites may not be visited. To obtain accurate gas flow data, a gob borehole monitoring system was designed and constructed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM). Gas flow, methane gas concentration, gas temperature, barometric pressure, and vacuum pressure of the exhaust fan are the parameters collected by the system. The system also includes circuitry for automatic shutdown of the exhaust fan and an alarm system before an unsafe condition is created. Telemetry components were also integrated into the system to allow for transmission of borehole data to the mine office. As a test, the system was installed and operated on a vertical gob borehole for six months. Test results indicated that intermittent measurements with hand-held instruments from vertical gob boreholes were always higher than gas flows measurements made by the gob gas analyzer system. This paper describes the system components, operational characteristics, and the results of the test program.

INTRODUCTION A trend which is obvious in the United Kingdom and is thought to be evident in other parts of the Western world is the disproportionate rise in the cost of tunnel mining labour compared with other tunnel cost increases. This disproportionate increase in labour costs has been accompanied by, and may be the result of, a shortage of skilled working labour. To combat this problem there has been a steady increase in the use of machines for excavation and for the erection of tunnel linings to keep the amount of skilled labour working below ground to a minimum. The typical tunnelling cycle, where the ground needs continuous support can be excavation, temporary support, temporary lining, grouting and permanent lining. It is obviously an advantage to combine as many of these operations as possible and carry out as much as possible by machine. Machines have been developed which will, either alone or used in combination with a shield, excavate and, when necessary, temporarily support the excavation. If a segmental lining is used, it can be so designed that it will form the permanent lining and reduce the cycle time and skilled labour requirement to a minimum. In cases in which the ground can be cut accurately to a smooth profile and will stand without support for a sufficient time, the lining can be expanded against the ground and the necessity of grouting eliminated. In cases in which ground will not stand without support, the usual method is to use a bolted lining and to grout behind it preferably as the shield is shoved forward. In many cases, the reuse of process water in flotation plants is desirable both for plant operating reasons and for environmental protection. The main advantages are better housekeeping of fresh water and process chemicals together with the reduction of polluting species to the environment. There are however a number of problems involved in the use of recycled process water. The main problem is that recycling sometimes has a deterious effect on the process and can occur months after the start of water recycling. The Division of Mineral Processing of Luleå University of Technology has been conducting experiments on recycling of process water at various sulphide plants in Sweden for over ten years. The experiments have been carried out in pilot- and full industial scale, in collaboration with the mining companies operating the plants. Until 1988 investigations were carried out in four different sulphide plants. The objectives of the experiments were: first to document differences in the composition of the process water during recycling; secondly to investigate any changes in the pulp chemistry of the flotation circuits wich may be due to the influence of recycled water; and lastly to establish critical levels, if any. of the parameters measured. While conducting experiments of this kind several things have to be kept in mind. Normally, recycling is done by using tailings pond water as process water. This means that time effects are important, because of the time lag between water input in the tailings pond and the reclaim of that water back to the plant. As will be shown, the

Canadian junior mining companies whose gold exploration and exploitation programs take them across the border into the western United States should be prepared to deal with the myriad of title issues involved in acquiring unpatented gold mining claims. The purpose of this paper is to serve as an introductory outline for Canadian junior mining companies to mining laws of the United States, as well as to relevant laws of some of the western gold mining states. Topics will include the five w's (who, where, what, why and when) of Canadian junior mining companies1 rights and responsibilities in acquiring interests in U.S. gold mining properties by claim staking, lease or purchase. Historic terms of common parlance among U.S. miners, such as "claimjumping" are defined and discussed. Various legal doctrines, such as "pedis possessio" and "good faith" in the location of claims are covered as well. Controversial subjects of contemporary interest are addressed in some detail, such as whether to locate a bulk-mineable disseminated gold deposit with placer claims or lode claims, and whether lodes may be staked over placers. By thus heightening the awareness of Canadian junior mining companies, it is hoped that they can be properly prepared to avoid title disputes, and to win lawsuits when they are unavoidable.

The conventional magnetic separators used in the mineral industry are equipped with traditional magnetic circuits or with permanent magnets (rare earth). However, when processing minerals with low magnetic susceptibilities or minerals of very small particle size, these separators are inefficient. In addition, a conventional magnetic circuit consumes considerable amounts of electricity to generate a relatively low magnetic field (~2 Tesla). The equipment is also heavy and bulky. Only a separator having a superconducting sole-noid can contribute in solving most of the problems, and only such a separator can produce high magnetic fields with low energy consumption. New developments and the experience acquired in using these superconducting magnets have resulted in new uses for magnetic separation, especially in the environmental area. This paper presents and describes a separation system that uses superconducting magnets that are completely automated and able to treat raw materials (concentration or purification) or liquid industrial effluents containing heavy metals in solution. Several industrial sectors, including the surface treatment, petroleum and chemical industries, are generating effluents containing heavy metal ions. The main metal ions found in such effluents include zinc, copper and vanadium. The purification of such effluents by magnetic separation is performed by adding a certain proportion of iron salts. The treated effluent passes through a superconducting separator where the flocs are retained in a matrix of steel wires. The efficiency of supraconducting high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) by this method exceeds 95%. Mineral separation and industrial-waste purification results are presented.

The mineral industry and individual processing plants are large consumers of energy. While energy conservation has received some attention in the present Federal Administration National Energy Strategy proposal it is obvious that the mineral industry should also continue to emphasize energy consumption reduction for important economic savings alone. As indicated by other studies, comminution is the largest single consumer of energy in the mineral processing plant (1.3% of total electrical energy consumption in the U.S.A.).1 Fine grinding is the largest portion of this amazing statistic. While substantial energy savings have been demonstrated by new machine developments and improved control methods, undoubtedly there are additional areas in comminution where substantial progress can be made. Some time ago, the U.S. Department of Energy published a report on "Comminution and Energy Consumption" by a committee composed of experts in the field of comminution from industry and academia. They identified the following potential for energy savings by specific areas? Classification device design 9-13% Comminution device design 3-16% Control 9% Grinding additive 3-6% Materials 3% It is apparent that the classification device had the first or second highest savings potential. Obviously, serious research consideration must be given to this technology area. A series of three papers have previously been written on the subject of two stage classification research work for ball mill operation by the authors. Accordingly, a brief review will be made. Previous Research Results on Two Stage Classification The hydrocyclone was selected as the type of classification equipment for this study as it represents by far the majority of the devices used in ball milling. While four different hydrocyclone circuits have been proposed by others,3 only two were considered in this work as illustrated in Figure 1. Chemical oxygen supplies have been used for nearly 60 years, with their greatest application during the last 25 years. They are of two types, the superoxides and chlorate "candles", The superoxides are demand chemicals, responding to the needs of the user and to supply oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. Chlorate candles are formed solid element which furnish oxygen only and do not remove carbon dioxide. Properties of these materials will be described, with comments on the respiratory requirements of a man under various workloads, types of equipment which use chemical oxygen, comparison with other systems and potential application to an underground mine survival system.

Autocad has become the standard graphics package for the mining industry as well as the general engineering profession. This paper discusses the evolution that mine planning has undergone and the trend toward compatibility with Autocad. It discusses the common use of Autocad in mine planning and systems modeling using a program called ICAMPS developed by Ohio Automation. As an example of its usefulness the use of the interactive ventilation network modeling capabilities are discussed specifically and are applied to mine planning at an operating trona mine. The ventilation analysis feature of the ICAMPS software works from Autocad drawing of the as-mined map and the projected mine layout. Using on-screen displays of these maps and the snap-on feature of Autocad, the planner designates nodes in the ventilation network, connects them into branches and selects branch characteristics from a side bar menu. The color coded ventilation network appears with the branch parameters alongside each branch. The software calculates the length of airways, computes the branch resistances where needed, converts the input into the required format and passes this information as input data along to the PENNVEN simulation program written by the Pennsylvania state University. Output is available in graphical as well as report format. The color coded graphs include pressures at the nodes and flow quantities on the branches. Since the networks come from the mine maps, the ventilation schematic displays are to scale and can be plotted separately or superimposed on the mine maps.
