The removal of carbonaceous material from Carlin gold ore has been investigated via froth flotation. The effect of type and concentration of various oils as flotation collectors and of sodium silicate as the dispersion agent on the overall recovery of carbonaceous material has been studied. Other variables affecting froth flotation efficiency were also examined closely. These included particle size, pH of the solution, and temperature. The effect of reduction and oxidation of carbonaceous material on froth flotation efficiency has also been investigated. This investigation showed that aromatic type oil was the most effective collector. Also found in this investigation was that oxidized carbonaceous material was difficult to float unless the oxidized portion was subject to reduction before flotation. More than fifty percent of the carbonaceous material was able to be removed via froth flotation. It can be concluded from this study that the effect of pH and temperature during the rougher flotation state is of little significance to the overall recovery of carbonaceous material. Since pyrite is responsible for the high consumption of chlorine, removal of pyrite is very important in order to reduce the overall consumption of chlorine.

INTRODUCTION For more than a century, artificial ground freezing has been used for groundwater control and structural support for excavations. Most of the early uses of the freezing method were for sinking deep access shafts for mines and tunnels (1,2,3,4). More recently, ground freezing has increasingly been used for construction of large diameter cofferdams and soft-ground and mixed-face tunnels (5). Although ground freezing has been used in the past-for tunnels, it was invariably used as a last resort measure, where more conventional measures could not be used. The more recent freezing applications, however, have become increasingly cost competitive with more conventional techniques, and are now being included as part of the design concept (6,7,8,9,10,11,12). The purpose of this paper is to describe some of the more recent applications of ground freezing for tunnel construction. The paper begins with a brief description of the most commonly used freezing system, the Poetsch process. Recent tunneling projects utilizing ground freezing for structural support are then discussed. DESCRIPTION OF THE FREEZING METHOD The most commonly used freezing method is the Poetsch process, which was originally developed by F. H. Poetsch in the late 1800's. There has been a phenomenal increase in production of coal from opencast mines in India. At the same time environmental problems caused by mining are receiving greater atttention. Deterioration in ambient air quality due to increased concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in and around an opencast project is a major problem. Some measured values of SPM level around opencast mines in diff coalfields show that in many cases the TLV of 500 ug/m^3 is exceeded. The impact of dust emission from a mining project on surrounding areas are estimated by using computer models for air pollution dispersal but such treatment suffers from errors in predicting the dust load and failure to take into account the terraced nature of the opencast mine site. The haul roads have been identified as the most prolific source of dust and some recent trials on haul road dust consolidation in Indian mines are mentioned in the paper. Statistics regarding pneumoconiosis cases in Indian coal mines for the last decade are presented to show an increase in reported cases and a gist of the recently amended regulations on the subject of precaution against dust is mentioned.

Bituminous sands of the Lower Cretaceous McMurray Formation in northern Alberta constitute the ore for the surface mining operation at Syncrude Canada Ltd. These sediments represent a complex succession of fluvial, estuarine and marine depositional environments. Grade prediction is realized through a combination of geological interpretation, computer modeling, and reference to past mining experience. Accurate forecasts of feed grade permit reliable predictions of volumes for removal to meet budgeted synthetic crude oil production. This planning facilitates efficient allocation of mining equipment and resources. The feed grade to the Extraction Plant is monitored at various points along the delivery system.

The Banat district in Romania was an important uranium mining area for the last 45 years until its closure in 1997. Uranium was present as finely dispersed pitchblende into solid bitumen lens and layers. Due to the mining activities, radioactive wastes have been disposed of in different places of the Banat area. These sites contain uranium, radium and radon and exhibit high contamination potential for environmental receptors (soil, air, waters, sediments and vegetation). Therefore the risk for human health through external and internal irradiation is considered high. The main pollution sources in this uranium mining area are mine and surface waters, waste and low grade ore heaps, dumps as well as release of radon. In this paper studies concerning recognition of pollution sources, delimitation of maps, uranium and radium solubilization and migration from dumps as well as environmental contamination of specific areas related to exploitation and exploration are presented. The risk assessment is based on the relationship ?source-pathway-target? in order to assess environmental risks and identify targets for rehabilitation. The sources causing significant contamination problems were identified by examining the pollutant linkage. The remediation plan for the Banat uranium mining complex involves mine flooding, treatment of water and leachates, as well as modification of heap slopes, application of covers and establishment of vegetation.

The Fort Lawton Parallel Tunnel was built in 1990 - 1991 by Morrison Knudsen Corporation (MK) as an integral part of Seattle METRO's planned expansion of the Westpoint Treatment Plant. The project included a concrete lined 2542 m (8,340 ft) long tunnel bored in sands and clays under the presence of methane gas and over 27.4 m (90 ft) of ground water table. The tunnel roughly paral¬lels an existing and still operating 3.65 m (12 ft) diameter tunnel originally completed in 1909. The parallel tunnel was constructed using a Lovat 4.72 m (15 ft-6 in) earth pressure balanced TBM with ribs and timber lagging as primary support. The tunnel alignment crossed under as much as 91.4 m (300 ft) of overburden as well as twin mainline railway tracks; terminating in a shaft adja¬cent to the Seattle ship canal. The project was completed in June, 1991 after a final "wet-tap" tie-in to the existing brick-lined sewer; over five months ahead of the contract schedule. This paper will describe the construction methods, job site conditions and difficulties encoun¬tered on this very challenging and successful project.

The Ohio valley division of consolidation coal company has incorporated two new aspects within its coal mining concern. A new communication system, thru the cooperation of the c. & p. Telephone company, has been established in each of our mines with its central control in the general office building. In conjunction with this system, a Texas instruments 960 a computer has been incorporated into the system. The purpose for our computer is to provide modernization and improvement to our safety, production and maintenance programs. Thru proper use, the computer will help eliminate inaccuracies and inefficiences that have previously caused inaccurate analysis of problems. Due to federal requirements for more reliable communications in underground mines, Ohio valley division is making a concentrated effort to improve its communication systems. Systems such as the magneto phone and trolley phone have been looked at more critically. It was found that these systems are being used well beyond their limits. With these facts in mind, division personnel started looking for a system that would have these built in advantages: ease of maintenance and installation, increased reliability, low cost, and an inherent ability as a multiple use system.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are powerful analytical and data display tools for mining industry management, capable of linking spatial features with tabular data and integrating communications across departmental boundaries. This GIS application concentrates in four technical areas of underground mining: ownership and mineral claims; exploration management; production; and mine safety. GIS provides land and exploration managers with the ability to consolidate and archive claim data and to georeference property maps defined in local coordinates into world coordinate systems. It facilitates optimal siting and querying of service installations and refuge chambers relative to production centers. GIS's proximity analysis identifies areas of potential safety concern and points to and maps the shortest routes to emergency exits, facilitating the prompt evacuation of mine personnel.

This paper describes a new approach for examining the kinetics and mechanism of zinc dissolution from sphalerite concentrate in acidic ferric sulfate solution in the presence of manganese dioxide. A literature search was performed to access the possible action of the two oxidizing agents, i.e., ferric ion and manganese dioxide. The possibility of galvanic coupling between ZnS and MnO2 and the cyclic action of the redox couple, Fe2+/Fe3+, on these two minerals were theoretically examined based on corrosion principles. Expressions for the mixed potential (Em) and the mixed current (im) were derived for the relevant corrosion and galvanic couples. Leaching experiments were conducted to establish which of the above phenomena is operative during leaching. The results indicated that the dissolution mostly occurs by the action of ferric ion on ins producing ferrous ions. The presence of MnO2 enables a quick conversion of ferrous to ferric, which maintains the rate of in dissolution. The process has promising features for commercial exploitation.

Presented is a method of continuously producing very narrowly sized particle streams. Currently Sieve Cascadography is a batch method of analyzing particle shape - a form of particle chromatography. This paper introduces and analyzes the continuous Sieve Cascadograph, a device that enables a series of narrowly sized particle fractions to be produced continuously. Properly designed, the continuous Sieve Cascadograph will produce many product streams of particles with as little as one percent difference in particle size within a given size fraction - an order of magnitude better than existing technology permits. By varying operating conditions, the size of the output fractions may be varied.

Pillar design ought to be a matter of matching pillar strength against pillar loading conditions to come up with dimensions that will cause the pillar to behave as required - to stand forever, or for a limited time, or to fail in a controlled manner. But something has gone wrong in recent years, seriously wrong. Pillar design practices have departed from reality. The laboratory and computer have taken the place of the mind. If the mind is put to work and such pillar design practices are examined critically, it becomes obvious that they deal with conditions that do not exist in a real mine. Time, effort and money are wasted, and the end results are incorrect and misleading. These questionable pillar design practices have been passed on from generation to generation over the past 30 or 40 years. The hope here is that we can return to reality as soon as the questionable practices are generally recognized. We could then go back into the mines and define how pillars really work, and mining safety, efficiencies and costs should improve. Let us take a close look at current textbook design practices and compare them to real-life conditions. Common sense might then prevail. (At this time, we will consider only mine pillar design, but similar scrutiny should be applied to design criteria for width of openings, floor conditions and roof support systems.)

Curved pulp lifters have been incorporated in SAG and AG mills in Australia. The aims have been to ensure complete discharge, at high throughput, of both slurry and coarse solids, especially at high mill rotational speeds. Curved pulp lifters can overcome incomplete discharge and back-flow of solids down the pulp lifter that can occur in straight-radial pulp lifters (and is a major cause of wear). They can be designed to prevent reverse flow of pulp via grates back into the mill. Experience with curved pulp lifters now extends to three years over three mills, in one mill as an installation from new and two as retro-fitted installations. Curved pulp lifters, relative to conventional designs, offer improved discharge and wear performance and well as high impact-resistance and wear life of the curved pulp lifter grates.

Shotcrete drift linings at the Climax Mine of the Climax Molybdenum Company have undergone four years of extensive evaluations as a replacement for thick poured-in-place concrete linings. Any drift lining at Climax must be able to withstand the rigors of undercut and secondary blasting, weight problems induced by panel caving, and the abrasion of slusher mining. Examined here are the conclusions reached so far on shotcrete drift linings which have not yet completed the approximately six-year cycle from development to ore exhaustion. Properly applied shotcrete is an adequate drift lining for all phases of the Climax panel caving system of mining. Undercut blasting will damage shotcrete unless blasts are correctly timed. Weight problems will destroy shotcrete drift linings as efficiently as it will destroy concrete or steel support systems. Abrasion and secondary blasting results are inconclusive as the shotcrete lined slusher drifts have not entered the ore production stage of the mining cycle. In addition to drift linings, Climax has found shotcrete to be invaluable for lining large underground shops, for temporary support systems, for permanent ventilation bulkheads and for the repair of abraded or weight damage concrete lined slusher and haulage drifts.

Bentonite is a common name applied to a variety of clays that develope swelling properties when associated with water. Useful bentonite deposits occur in many Western and Southern states. Their origins may consist of the alteration of volcanic sediments or the decomposition of shallow lake deposits. The specific type of bentonite that will be discussed in this review will be only the Western or high swelling sodium type bentonite that is mined primarily in Wyoming. Wyoming bentonite first entered the market in the late 1880's when it was used as an oil absorbing cosmetic. In the 1920's it was discovered that superior binding properties were present which created new opportunities in pharmaceutical, animal feed, and steel foundries. The swelling properties that were exhibited by the high swelling Wyoming bentonites soon led to its use in oil exploration when the rotary drilling process developed a need for multipurpose fluids. Bentonites in general and Wyoming bentonite in particular have fascinated chemists and process development specialists since the 1920's. There exists a long list of industrial uses that has led to hundreds of patents and extensive literature reviews. The binding and swelling properties are developed as a result of large surface areas and high cation exchange properties. Water, being a di polar molecule, attaches to the ionic vacancies and forms a network of tightly held water particles which in turn produces an impermeable seal or a binding characteristic in unconsolidated powder. Newer uses for Wyoming bentonite that once again utilized the binding and swelling properties include the pelletizing of iron ore and a vast array of civil engineering applications including slurry trenching, lagoon sealing, and garbage landfill sealing.

INTRODUCTION This paper presents a method of calculation of internal moments and thrusts in tunnel liners of any material. The method is intended for hand calculation, but as it is numerical in nature it can be programmed for use in computers. The information required for design or analysis is presumed active internal and external pressures, the effective moment of inertia and cross-sectional area of the tunnel liner, the liner's modulus of elasticity, and the coefficient of subgrade reaction of the material surrounding the tunnel. Starting with active external and internal pressures and following the procedure described herein using the structural properties of the liner and surrounding medium, external passive reactions and internal moments and thrusts are calculated. The method is intended for use by design engineers. GENERAL Experience has shown that flexible tunnel liners have less internal bending stresses than those calculated using classical structural theory applied to free-standing arches. In fact, liners which are very flexible in relation to the surrounding soil or rock have virtually no bending moments when compared to free-standing arches supporting equal active loads. In order for this phenomenon to occur, the original active pressure diagram must be "modified" by additional external reactions (passive pressures) from the surrounding material, so that the thrust line within the lining follows the centroid of the tunnel arch more closely than that of a similar free-standing arch. In 1973, the Subcommittee on Contracting Practices, U. S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology, National Academy of Sciences, under the able chairmanship of A. A. Mathews, Engineering Consultant, now residing at Kaunakokai, Hawaii, undertook the task of developing recommendations for improving the performance of underground construction work, reducing the costs of such work and minimizing the adverse atmosphere in which owners and contractors were performing their respective functions. The author of this paper and C. F. Palmetier, a highly qualified engineer, were thereupon appointed as staff assistants to the Subcommittee, to conduct a study of existing practices and relationships in Western Europe and in the United States, to formulate recommendations, for consideration by the Subcommittee and the participants in a future workshop, as to desirable improvements in United States contracting practices and relationships. The study, conducted during 1973 and 1974, involved personal interviews of a total of 162 owners, engineers, contractors, lawyers, and educators throughout the United States and in 7 European countries, the analysis of 178 replies to questionnaires sent to individuals and firms involved directly or indirectly in construction, and a workshop, near Napa, California, attended by 53 representatives of all segments of the construction community. The resulting report, entitled "Better Contracting for Underground Construction", was submitted by the Subcommittee to the National Academy of Sciences, which approved its publication in 1974 by the National Technical Information Service. With the end of active copper mining in 1983, the extensive underground mine workings and the Berkeley Pit, one of the largest open-pit mines in the United States, began to flood. Daily in- flow to the pit is about five million gallons per day, with the water level rising at a rate of 30 feet per year. To support the remedial investigation and feasibility study, a six-layer, three-dimensional MODFLOW-based ground water flow model was constructed to simulate the 9,100-acre site. The vertical domain of the model extended over 1,060 feet of elevation difference and consisted of a finite difference grid of 89 rows by 54 columns. All work was PC- based. Model boundaries were assigned to correspond to natural hydrologic features such as geologic contacts, faults, and surface water features. The fully calibrated model was approved by the State of Montana and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in the site remediation. The computer model was used to determine ground water flow velocities and contaminant travel times within the alluvial sediments adjacent to the Berkeley Pit. The purpose of the model was to predict future alluvial ground water flow directions should acid- and heavy metal-laden flood waters filling the Berkeley Pit rise up and enter the Alluvial Aquifer.

This is a world of change and has been from the beginning. There are constant efforts on the part of natural forces to wear down the high spots and fill in the low spots. Wind and water over eons of time tunnel through obstacles and build windways and waterways to make movement of air and water easier and more efficient. It is a natural, never ending, ever changing continuing effort. Man in his struggle to survive, and to progress, has had to adapt the terrain of the earth to fit his needs the best he could. First, he used natural caves to protect him from the elements; then he learned how to build earth and rock-moving tools from antlers, bone, rocks, and sticks and adapted his cave to increase his security and provide better protection from heat and cold and from his predatory enemies. As his numbers increased, so did the necessity of further adapting his environment to accommodate his needs. Water was usually not available when and where needed, especially in the desert areas where civilization developed, and long tunnels were drilled to intercept ground waters and lead them to underground caves carved out of soft limestone. Most of the tunnels of early man were to bring water from where it was to where man needed it. Then, as now, as man increased his chances for physical survival, he turned to the quality of life -- and this reflected in the concern for life after death. This lead to the elaborate shafts and tunnels for the protection and prservation of the more affluent noblemen and pharaohs of the early Egyptian civilization. Man used the underground for the stable temperature and for protection and safety.

Test work and plant operation confirmed that semiautogenous (SAG) milling is a viable option for Inco's milling rationalization project at Sudbury only if pebble crushing is included. Throughput increases more than 50% with pebble crushing incorporated into the comminution process. The finer product of high-speed pebble crushing provides further energy savings. The unconventional approach of pumping the pebble crusher product, while simplifying plant layout, has produced challenging wear problems. Inco Ltd.'s Sudbury operations are located in northeastern Ontario, Canada, about 400 km (250 miles) north of Toronto. Inco has 11 operating mines around the rim of the Sudbury basin. The mines currently produce about 11 Mt/a (12 million stpy) of ore. This ore contains pentlandite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite in mafic host rocks. The milling facilities are designed to produce 108.8 kt/a (240 million lbs/ year) of nickel as concentrate. This concentrate is further processed through Inco's smelting and refining facilities to produce nickel, copper and several other metals. Before 1991, -200 mm (-8 in.) ore was shipped to two primary mills. The Clarabelle mill had a design capacity of 29 kt/d (32,000 stpd). Frood-Stobie had a capacity of 16.3 kt/d (18,000 stpd). The flowsheets of these mills were similar. Two stages of open-circuit crushing were followed by rod milling and closed-circuit ball milling. The product from the comminution circuit, at 12% +250 mm (+65 mesh), was first passed through magnetic separators to recover magnetic pyrrhotite. It was then sent through a four-stage flotation process. The first two stages produced a high-grade copper-nickel concentrate. The final two scavenger stages produced a low-grade copper-nickel concentrate containing nonmagnetic pyrrhotite.

Significant lost time delays were experienced by Carbonifera de Nueva Rosita, S.A. de C.V. ("CNR") during mining development of the Pasta de Conchos Mine ("the Mine") near Nueva Rosita, Coahuila, Mexico. Furthermore, methane gas concentration in the return air course had exceeded 1.0 percent. Resource Enterprises, Inc. ("REI") was contracted by CNR to recommend an approach to reduce methane emissions at the Mine. In order to recommend a degasification approach, REI and CNR obtained geologic and reservoir characteristics of the Double coal seam, Olmos Formation. A vertical core hole was drilled to obtain core samples to determine gas content (average 8.4 cm3/gm) and to conduct a slug test to estimate permeability (34 md). This information was used to simulate gas productivity and drainage effectiveness. The simulation indicated that underground horizontal boreholes would remove significant quantities of gas in advance of mining in a reasonable period of time. Based on the results of the simulation study, an underground degasification drilling program was initiated at the Mine. In a six month period, five long in-mine degasification boreholes were drilled in advance of CNR's three to five years mining projections. Peak gas production from the five boreholes (approximately 2,750 cumulative meters) had exceeded 45,000 m3/D. Results to date have indicated a general reduction in methane concentration in the return air course below 0.8 percent.
