An investigation is made into the applicability of queueing theory to simulating the operation of a large open pit copper mine in the southwestern United States. Actual data from a working mine was used to construct curves for truck loading time, haulage and return time, and dumping times. Known results of investigations of queueing models (Koenigsberg - 1958, Gordon and Newell - 1967, Cabera and Maher - 1973) were used to simulate the actual operation. These did not give acceptable results so commonly used probability distributions were fitted to the actual data. A large computer program known as Q-GERT was used with the various parameters obtained from fitting the curves. Kolmogorov- Smirnov tests were run that showed that this was not satisfactory either. Finally, Q-GERT was used with the actual data from the mine. An appropriate correction factor is then found to apply to the exponential probability distributions tested previously and satisfactory results are obtained.

Common methods of controlling gob gas in U.S. nines are by means of ventilation of gob areas and gas drainage through surf ace boreholes. Costs of drilling surface gob holes increase as deeper coalbeds are mined. Where gob holes cannot be drilled because of topography, ventilation is the only means of control. Even then, sufficient air may not be available to dilute methane in the bleeder entries to acceptable levels. Thus, new methods of gob gas control need to be developed that are independent of surface topography, and of the mine ventilation system, and less costly than present systems. Except for slight variations in procedures and equipment, Great Britain, West Germany, France, Belguim, Poland, and Czechoslovakia use a common methane control method that is different from the system generally used in the United States, This Bureau of Mines paper reviews European mining methods, mining conditions, and methane control technology and discusses their applicability to U.S. mines.

The Rawah Ditch is a mountainous water supply diversion which supplies Larimer County, Colorado with water since 1903. The ditch includes two historic tunnels excavated by drill and blast through a gneissic rock buttress. Both rock tunnels were failing with annual convergence. After a snowshoe-accessed eld investigation, nite element modeling, and an alternatives analysis, a diameter DE pipe was inserted within each tunnel and the annulus lled. The proect was implemented in an Alternative Delivery contract lasting ve months from eld investigation through procurement and construction.

A computer program has been developed for finding a near-optimum schedule of the mining sequence for flat lying, tabular orebodies. The deposit is divided in blocks with equal areas and definite grades, thicknesses and ore contents. Mining is done by room and pillar method and trackless haulage to surface. Access from surface is by adits or ramps with additional vent raises. In total eight different general concepts for access and development can be realized. The optimum mining sequence is found by a heuristic method. Criterion is the maximization of the net present value over the lifetime of the mine. Specific stoping costs per t of ore are taken for con¬stant, whereas development and haulage costs for individual blocks and also sequences will be different. Correct ventilation and a technically sensible sequence are guaranteed. Beginning with a single block, neighbouring blocks are tested and an optimum stoping sequence is generated. The net present value of the total mining operation for the planning period is calculated, taking into account ore, which is mined during development. The program can also be used to investigate given mining sequences.

Since the production prototype continuous vat leaching pilot plant was installed at Ariel Resources in Costa Rica in 1995, the test results and lessons learned have been invaluable in plotting the future of this method. Vigorous test programs in base and precious metals as well as design developments for studies have shown the advantages, economically, technically, and environmentally that favor this method over current practices in heap leaching and stirred tank leaching. Much larger individual vats have been developed with throughputs as high as 5000 t/d with larger vats envisaged, and there has been a trend towards using vats with ground ore. Five projects are slated to begin detailed engineering this year, three in precious metals and two in copper. Of particular interest to future producers is the ability to deposit d,y, detoxified tailings at a fraction of the cost of conventional methods. Proprieta,y work is ongoing which promises to eliminate the need for tailings dams when using other methods of processing such as flotation. This is of particular importance in light of dam failures around the world in recent years.

The vermiculite review arrived too late for the June issue. In 1992, production of commercial vermiculite in the United States increased 1 % to 170 kt (187,000 st), according to the US Bureau of Mines. The estimated value of vermiculite concentrate was $13.6 million, yielding an average value of $80/t ($72.50/st). Vermiculite is used in several physical forms. Use of the thermally exfoliated product include light weight aggregates, horticultural growth media, thermal insulation applications and absorbents for spill control and liquid waste containment. The untreated commercial concentrates are used as intumescent fillers in plaster board, gaskets and paints. Several chemically modified vermiculite products include clay-sized dispersions and granules for treating flue gas. South Africa was the only major foreign source of vermiculite used in the United States. It exported about 40 kt (44,000 st) to the United States last year. In 1992, Palabora Mining Co. began processing vermiculite in a new beneficiation mill at Phalabowra. It produced about 164 kt (181,000 st). Minor sources of foreign vermiculite concentrates consumed in the United States included about 140 kt (154,000 st) from China. Brazil also exports some concentrate to the United States.

Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) is a preferred method of gold recovery from cyanided pulp. However, the resin-in-pulp (RIP) process is considered to have several advantages for the recovery of gold. Mintek therefore undertook a research programme to develop a commercially-viable RIP process. The MINRIP RIP process and a novel gold­selective strong-base resin, Minix, were developed. The process has been successfully demonstrated at a scale of 100 000 t/month. Continuous countercurrent tests using synthetic solutions indicate that the relative performance of an adsorbent depends on the composition of the solution. Minix resin yielded a higher gold loading than that of carbon, while maintaining an acceptable barren value. Batch tests on a number of gold-bearing materials indicated that Minix has potentially a higher capacity than carbon, and loads gold faster than carbon. An economic appraisal that consolidated the countercurrent results and the economic study indicated that the capital and operating costs of the Minrip process are considerably lower than those of CIP. The amount of the cost advantage depends on the gold content of the feed and the throughput.

To prevent duplication of effort for future generations, the fol¬lowing corrections are offered. These errors were discovered during a recent study in which a computer program for mine hoist rope selection was developed (Lineberry and Mateer, 1988). In order of increasing gravity: Captions for Figs. 3 and 4 are transposed. • Purported to be a more accurate method of rope selection than the process of successive approximation, the direct method assumes linearity between a given rope's minimum breaking strength, T, and unit rope weight, Wv. Because of the sensitive location of the constant, K, in equation (8) for breaking strength, the significance of this nonlinearity is magnified. For a typical 6 x 37 class fiber core wire rope (Wire Rope Corp. of America, 1985), K actually varies from 43,650 to 52,190, depending upon rope diameter. Although the direct solution permits a rapid selection of hoist rope, an indirect (iterative) solution procedure is favored because of its im¬proved accuracy and ease of computerization. • Equation (8) for minimum breaking strength is in error. Even in an otherwise care-fully done sampling procedure, reducing subsample weight, or splitting, when the grain size of material is too large commonly generates significant error. Such error can be estimated from the standard deviation of differences between values of PAIRED ASSAYS. Samples from split-ting steps immediately before comminution, and showing a restricted range of grade, generate paired assays. Splitting steps characterized by relative standard deviations exceeding 16% generate nonrepresentative data. Such steps should be redesigned to optimize reliability of assay-dependent studies. A sampling scheme can be graphically characterized, and then redesigned as appropriate, using a SAMPLING NOMOGRAPH. Use of the nomograph avoids continued replication of assays. Generally at a splitting step, excessive error can be reduced by comminuting more material. Unnecessary effort can be mitigated by comminuting less finely and/or by splitting to a smaller weight.

Bio-treatment of uranium contaminated soils from Fernald using the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was investigated. The experimental results showed that extraction of uranium upto 99 percent from soils were obtained with 10 percent pulp density suspension and with addition of iron (3000 mg/l) after bio-remediation time of seven days. Application of the results to industrial practices is discussed.

IDOM combines inventory theory, dynamic programming, computer simulation and interactive technique to formulate a production schedule for open-pit mines. This new method has been successfully used in metal mines of China for years.

On July 30, 1979 New Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) regulations for implementing the procedural provisions of the decade-old National Environmental Policy Act went into effect. These new regulations replace approximately seventy different sets of agency regulations, providing some uniformity throughout the Federal government in the conduct of environmental reviews and preparation of environmental impact statements (EIS). This attempt by the Federal government at a general improvement in the preparation and quality of EIS's presents an opportunity for the mining industry to evaluate how the EIS process for mining proposals can be expedited. The environmental impact statement is often a key element on the critical path of a major mining project. Preparation of the EIS is ordinarily the responsibility of the Federal agency with primary decision-making authority over the project. Still, the proponent, i.e. the mining company, can play a major role in the process and have a major impact on the timeliness and adequacy of the effort. Typically, the Proponent will conduct (or will hire consultants to conduct) environmental baseline studies of, for example, air quality, wildlife, geology, water quality, vegetation and archaeology. These studies are then compiled into an environmental report and submitted to the agency. The agency verifies the data and incorporates them into the environmental impact statement.

This paper demonstrates the importance of including a discount rate in the determination of the optimum final' depth of an open pit. Without a proper discount rate, a pit will probably end up too deep. Another consideration is future underground mining. If underground mining is profitable, the pit may need to be shallower. Of all of the investments needed, only mining equipment and the underground mine should be included, and amortization and depreciation should not he included in the study.

REE analyses of cumulate plagioclase from the PGE ore zone of the Stillwater Complex indicate that pressure fluctuations in the magma chamber acting on a single magma can- not be responsible for features such as the reappearance of Mg-rich olivine on the liquidus. The data is more consistent with a model involving multiple injection and mixing of geochemically distinct magmas. The PGE bearing sulfides of the J-M Reef are associated with such a re- appearance of olivine, indicating that the unusual location of the ore zone may be related to the addition of new magma, compositionally distinct from magmas that produced cumulates in the Ultramafic zone of the complex.

The goal of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) coal preparation R&D program is to develop technology to reduce the ash and sulfur contents of United States coals to levels such that the resultant product can be formulated into a high- quality solid or slurry fuel that could replace oil or natural gas in both new and retrofit applications. The Coal Preparation program is implemented by the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) and is conducted both in-house and by a cross section of industrial organizations, universities, and national laboratories.

Steel-fiber-reinforced-shotcrete (SFRS) methods of testing and the wording of specifications vary from country to country. In the USA ASTM C1018 is widely used. The Canadians have taken a close look at C1018 and point out that exact determination of the first crack is very subjective, and they propose a method of design that eliminates this variable. The Europeans (EFNARC) have taken the principles of testing a step further than ASTM C1018, and have added a new step in measuring the effectiveness of SFRS. EFNARC uses an "energy absorption" of a plate loaded in its center, in addition to the principles of C1018. The principles of SFRS design are also used in Japan, Norway and elsewhere.

The chemistry, physics and kinetics of chlorine treatment are described. Present operations, control strategy and projected changes are discussed. The concept of classification in wet, closed circuit ball milling is expanded beyond the performance of the classifying equipment to include all aspects of the fines removal system of the grinding circuit. Design and operating parameters that effect fines removal are identified and discussed, and a quantitative index for circuit classification effectiveness is presented.

Lignite open cast mine "Dubrave" is the largest lignite mine in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The open cast mine was designed with two external waste dumps. Waste dump "West" is the major dump, while "Cajici" dump is used for dumping waste taken from leveling the terrain. The major waste dump contains 14.6 million cu.m. of waste, while the side waste dump contains 3 million cu.m. of waste. Existing situation with available sites for depositing the waste shows that additional space for dumping the waste must be provided. Three options can be taken into consideration. The fact is that none of the three options are suitable for the current production situation. This article deals with the optimization process for obtaining the optimal variant where a waste dump can be located and selection of the most valuable option.
