In my experience, perhaps the most interesting problems came up during the testing, prospecting, developing and equipping of the Chuquicamata and Braden Copper Mines in Chile, and it is proposed in this article to give as briefly as possible what some of those problems were, their solutions, and the decisions made as to the different methods to be employed. The romance of mining is still a great lure to the young man who is making a choice of a profession to follow. The thought of travel to strange and out-of-the-way places, the glamor of pioneer life, the excitement of discovery, the constructive work of building something, entirely "from the grass roots up," or of reconstructing a played-out property and making a success of it-all of these phases have a strong appeal and often influence the young man in the choice of mining as a profession. In the spring of 1950, just two years after the inauguration of the domestic uranium program by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, the company entered the uranium mining and milling business through a newly formed subsidiary, Climax Uranium Co. This was the first venture into a new field of mining for Climax, which became the first old-time mining company, other than the vanadium producers, to become active in the embryo uranium industry. Twenty-five years earlier, Arthur Bunker, president of Climax Molybdenum, organized and operated the U. S. Vanadium Co. at Rifle, Colo. With this background, he viewed the budding industry of the Colorado Plateau with much interest. Upon its formation, the new subsidiary entered into a con- tract with the U. S. Government and the potential uranium-vanadium properties of Minerals Engineering Co. were assigned to Climax Uranium Co. Funds for the construction of a processing plant and working capital were advanced by Climax Molybdenum Co. The old sugar mill building of the Holly Sugar Co. in Grand Junction was leased to house the extractive plant. Construction of facilities, which were based upon a new process developed for the treatment of both uranium and vanadium ores, was completed and the mill was placed in operation early in 1951. Subsequent to that time several alterations were made and the capacity of the plant increased. In terms of recoveries, the plant has proved to be one of the most efficient on the Colorado Plateau

IN our study of the mechanism of and the prevention of corrosion in stainless steels, it was considered of fundamental importance to obtain knowledge of the surface structure of such alloys. If corrosion resistance is due to a self-healing oxide layer, which like a paint film protects the underlying metal, it would be obviously relevant were the effort made to make the film less permeable and more adherent; for example, the surface might be expected to respond to an anodizing process, which is found successful in increasing the film thickness and corrosion resistance of aluminum. However, if passivity and corrosion resistance of stainless steels are due to another cause, the attack of the problem would follow another path. One of the most effective techniques for studying passivity and corrosion tendency is the measurement of the electrochemical potential. Not only can one determine by potential measurements whether a metal is active or passive, but also one can determine the degree of passivity and rate of transformation of passivity with time. Chemical media that build up or destroy passivity when in contact with the steel can also be classified by potential measurements. Something can be learned, too, of the effect of alloy additions such as molybdenum to 18-8, known to decrease corrosion of the alloy in chloride solutions. A study of alloys in previous investigations has sometimes included data on the electrochemical potentials. Tammann and Sotter1 measured the electrochemical potentials of alloys of iron-molybdenum and iron-chromium and reported the critical concentration of molybdenum or chromium at which passivity initiates. Strauss2 made similar measure-ments for the iron-chromium system. The electrochemical potential' has also been used to indicate carbide precipitated 18-8. In 18-8, heat-treated to precipitate carbide, active metal exists at the region of the grain boundaries, contrasted with passive metal within the grains, the active metal accounting for a resultant active potential. THE principal function of the Bell limestone mine, of the American Lime & Stone Co., at Bellefonte, Pa., is to supply raw material to the company's modern rotary kiln plant at Bellefonte. Because mining costs are naturally higher than many open quarries with more favorably lying strata, it cannot compete, except to a limited extent, in the markets for road material and fluxing stone. In the broad sense, mining does have an advantage over the average open quarry when the end products are designed for and controlled by process and final inspection for the exacting demands of the industrial and chemical markets. Approximately 80 per cent of the output of the Bell mine is sold in the industrial and chemical markets. And as higher standards are set each year for construction and agricultural work, the remainder of the mine output goes to these two classes. Mining produces more fines than open quarries, and these fines are difficult to market; on the other hand, owing to absence of contaminating clay and impure rock, a greater percentage of the output of a mine is marketable. Because of the great production of fines, rotary kilns for lime burning are necessary when the stone must be mined. In 1921 the American Lime & Stone Co. operated 19 quarries and 72 lime shaft kilns spread over an area of 40 miles between Bellefonte and Altoona, Pa. At that time the line-production capacity of the 72 kilns amounted to approximately 700 tons per day. After 15 years the company operates three rotary kilns and six shaft kilns, with a combined output of approximately 500 tons of lime per day, concentrated in its single Bellefonte plant (Fig. 1). Its only stone-producing plants are now the limestone mine at Bellefonte and a construction-stone open quarry at Union Furnace, near Tyrone, Pennsylvania.

ONLY the acute phase of the smelter fume problem is new. The problem itself is older than the Christian era. While both lead and copper were mined and crudely smelted ; on: 3,000 years ago, it was not until the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula and the British Isles, which occurred but shortly before the beginning of the Christian era, that there was any evidence of smelting operations on a scale sufficiently large to permit a fume problem. Around Huelva, Spain, are found more than 30 million tons of slag from lead smelting conducted there by the Romans. Pliny tells us that more than 20,000 slaves were employed in the Iberian mines. Extensive mining and smelting by the Romans in England and Wales were coincident with the Iberian proceedings. These metallurgical operations were upon a sufficiently large scale to produce marked results both upon the surrounding country and the smelter workers, but, as they were those of a conqueror upon conquered soil, conducted by slaves, imperial Rome failed to recognize that such a thing as a smoke problem did or could arise, and whatever fume question there may have been at that .time remained a question only to those who had no chance to answer any phase of it. The smelting operations of the Romans extended over about 400 years, and little is "recorded of lead and copper smelting from that time until the 16th century. From the revival beginning at this period up to the present century, the growth of smelting has been comparatively gradual. In Great Britain, smelting was conducted almost wholly in localities where metallurgical operations were of paramount importance, and the communities that grew up in smelter localities were due to and dependent upon the mines and smelters. This fact had much to do with the comparative freedom of British smelting from burdensome fume litigation and legislation. THE purpose of this paper is to record a few field observations and accumulated office data concerning outcrops, relation of ore occurrences to intrusive and host rock, and mineral zoning. Reasons for some of the phenomena are not clear to the author so the facts are given with the hope that other investigators may be able to furnish the explanations. The Avalos unit of the Compania Minera de Penoles, S. A., operates the Alicante, Bonanza, Providencia, Albarradon, San Eligio, Nazareno, Leona, Salaverna, and Santiago mines situated between Avalos railroad station and Concepcion del Oro on the Coahuila and Zacatecas railroad in the State of Zacatecas, Mexico. Some of these mines are within Penoles property while others are on mining claims leased from the Compania Nazareno, y Catasillas, S. A., Mazapil Copper Co., and the American Smelting and Refining Co. The main office and camp are at Providencia, about 170 km southwest of Monterrey, N. L., so the silver-lead-zinc mines of the district are usually referred to as the Providencia mines. The Aranzazu, Catarroyo, and Cabrestante copper-gold. mines are situated a few kilometers to the southeast on the same mountain range near Concepcion del Oro, the name by which the camp is known. It is operated by the Mazapil Copper Co. The main theme in the following pages is a description of the silver-lead-zinc ore occurrences of the district. Rock Formations Sedimentary Rocks: Many competent geologists have contributed generously to an ample fund of information concerning the sedimentary columns of northern Mexico. Among them are Carlos Burckhardt, E. Böse, L. B. Kellum, .and R. W. Imlay. Carlos Burckhardt who covered a number of extensive areas in many parts of the Mexican Republic, devoted years to mapping the geology of the Caja, Zuloaga, and Santa Rosa mountain ranges around Mazapil, Concepcion del Oro, and San Pedro de Ocampo, Zacatecas. The data contained in this paper were collected during the course of an investigation which covered 15 representative coal mines in six coalmining states. The purpose of the investigation was to determine by atmospheric sampling how much dust was raised into the air during the various operations of coal mining, such as undercutting with machines, loading coal by hand and transporting it from the working face to the surface. The data thus obtained were considered from two angles; namely, the possible physiological effect of inhalation and the explosion hazard of the dust. No attempt will be made to discuss the former factor in this paper. ConDitions of Mining The mines in which this investigation was conducted were considered representative, and it is believed that the results obtained will suffice for the average dustiness encountered in most coal mines. All of the coal mined was bituminous, from beds 30 to 120 in. thick. Only the ordinary room-and-pillar system of mining was employed. Daily production ranged from approximately 700 to 1500 tons and the men employed from 150 to 450. Coal was undercut by shortwall mining machines in all mines, with the exception of one in which pick mining was employed. Loading at the face wets done by miners; none of the mines used mechanical loaders. Electric drills, both for brushing roof and for shooting coal were commonly used, although some roof work was done with jack-hammers and a little of both with augers. Coal was hauled by motor, mule, or rope power in end-gate cars with capacities ranging from 1800 to 3600lb. With few exceptions, coal was won at the face by dry methods, that is to say, no water was employed for wetting down the dust either during undercutting, loading or transportation. The iron-ore deposits worked by this Company occur in lenses 200 to 1000 feet long and 5 to 80 feet wide, and stand at an angle of from 65' to 75, with a vertical height of 250 to 500 feet, other lenses occurring below. A number of the deposits were first worked as open pits, which in some cases were carried to the depth of 150 feet, when, owing to the weakness of the walls, underground mining was adopted. While the ore was being removed from the open pit, shafts mere in several instances sunk into the foot-wall, the intention being to mine the ore with breast-stopes of an approximate height of 20 feet, followed by underhand-stopes of the same height, leaving floors between of the necessary thickness to support the walls, or to effect the removal of the ore by means of what is known as the stall system. As the work progressed, however, it was found that the walls (which are of chlorite) were too weak to permit the working of breast-stopes 20 feet high, there being frequent heavy falls of ground from the hanging and, in some instances, from the foot. The plan of following breast-stopes with underhand-stopes was, therefore, abandoned. By working breast-stopes only, but little more than one-half of the ore could be removed, and that only at an excessive cost, the ore being so hard that power-drills with 3 1/8-inch pistons . and 6-inch stroke, working under 60 pounds of compressed air, are able to drill but 8 feet in ten hours as a yearly average, while from 6 inches to 2 feet is a common result of ten hours' drilling. It was plain that some other system of mining must be adopted, and it was proposed to sink by levels of 75 feet, carrying in the cross-cuts from the shafts and working out the ore each way from the shaft from foot to hanging, and from 15 to 20 feet in height. NICKEL is used as an alloying element in several complex commercial aluminum alloys, among which are found some very interesting proper-ties, such as relatively high strength at elevated temperatures, relatively low coefficient of expansion, the absence of permanent growth, ability to take a good polish, and a bright, pleasing as-cast surface. For that reason the aluminum-nickel system was included in the list of binary aluminum systems that are being studied as a preparation for the investigation of more complex commercial alloys. This paper is the fifteenth of a series from the Research Laboratories of the Aluminum Company of America reporting the results of investiga-tions of equilibrium relations in aluminum-base alloys of high purity. The aluminum-nickel equilibrium diagram from 0 to 18 per cent nickel was determined, using the purest material available.

EXPLORATORY WORK THE related subjects of preferred orientation, directionality in physical properties, and earing tendencies of wrought metal [ ] strip have attracted the attention of metallurgists to such an extent that in the past 20 years hundreds of researches have been published on this one general problem. The anisotropy of tensile strength and elongation have been exhaustively studied in their relationship to the occurrence of ears in cups drawn from strips-20.29 and, to a lesser extent, yield strength7,11,17 and stress-strain curves" have been investigated. Despite the tremendous fund of knowledge thus accrued, no simple quantitative correlation of directionality and earing tendencies has yet been found. In a sense, this is not surprising. The formation of ears in a drawn cup clearly is a special phase of the general study of metal flow; in particular (as will be brought out in the course of this paper), ears are due to anistropy in the rates of deformation of the metal in the radial, circumferential, and "thickness" directions of the original blank. It would be difficult to effect a correlation between earing tendency and a property that may be completely independent of the flow of metal, or at best related to metal flow in an exceedingly complex fashion. Yet, it is this correlation that has been attempted; tensile strength and elongation are attributes of metal rupture, a phenomenon that has quite admirably been shown to be distinct from the phenomenon of metal flow,21 while yield strength and stress-strain

This is an attempt to bring together some of the knowledge of the coal-forming conditions obtaining during the Pennsylvanian period in the Western Interior Coal Province, to sketch briefly the present extent and character of the coals produced, and to show the beginning of correlation of beds over wide areas. Coals of later age than the Pennsylvanian are not included and, for reasons that will appear later, little attempt is made to cover the districts of eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas, and northern Texas is omitted entirely. Geological Conditions The conditions that made possible the formation of large coal beds in the United States were most favorable in the Pennsylvanian period, formerly known as the Upper Carboniferous. The geological conditions can be determined from the records, but not the reasons for them. Preceding the Pennsylvanian was the Mississippian, formerly known as the lower Carboniferous and still later as the sub-Carboniferous. During this time, large bodies of limestone were deposited and at the close of the Mississippian they were warped upward and for a long period were eroded. Then there began a period of subsidence, more or less interrupted at times, during which the Pennsylvanian strata were deposited (see table on next page). These consist of sandstones, limestones and shales, with occasional coal beds. At the beginning of the Pennsylvanian there was subsidence, which allowed the sea to extend over the eroded Mississippian surface to the north and east. It passed over eastern and central Texas, a large part of Oklahoma, with a projection into Arkansas, over Kansas and part of Nebraska, all the northern and western part of Missouri, a large part of Iowa except a strip in the north, most of Illinois, practically all of Kentucky, northern Tennessee, most of Indiana, all of the eastern part of Ohio, practically all of West Virginia, western Maryland, the west end of Virginia, and a large part of Pennsylvania. The data given in the paper were collected to furnish an idea of the amount required in various operations of bituminous mining to produce a ton of coal, the plants selected being well-managed ones. With these are included some figures compiled from U. S. Coal Commission's report showing the average amount of labor in various classes of mines. THE information contained in the following paper was collected at the request of the U. S. Coal Commission, and is, published with the permission of that body and of the various companies furnishing the data. For obvious reasons, the names of the companies are not given. No data were gotten from States south of Virginia or west of the Mississippi River. The data about the amount of labor, in man-hours, required in producing a ton of bituminous coal have been collected with the idea of showing what is being done at some well-managed plants, and not to show the average amount required by all mines, which undoubtedly is considerably higher than the average of the figures shown.* Almost all of the figures were supplied by the various companies in reply to a questionnaire; when they were obtained from other sources the company was asked to verify them. On account of the amount of work required, the data were only requested for one or two months for each plant, and the figures represent in each case a month when the car supply was good and the work was practically steady. In the case of most of the West Virginia and Kentucky mines, these conditions were best met in May and June, 1922. The mines for which the figures are given are arranged by states and as to whether the mine operates under union or non-union or open-shop conditions. The union mines listed are generally considered to be as well-managed as are the non-union ones. The production per month in a few cases includes the amount of slate which is loaded and hauled out of the mine, as of course this requires nearly as much labor per ton as does the coal. THIS paper makes no claim to any new idea; it simply reviews the Treasury Department Regulations pertaining to the practical application of depreciation and depletion and other allowances governing taxation of oil and gas properties. Other methods may be existent, but as they may not conform to the legal status they must be discarded. In complying with the present laws governing the, industry with regard to taxation and the allowable deductions therefrom, the following considerations are essential: Depletion, depreciation, amortization, other allowances, and items not deductible. It is definitely understood that depletion is the loss or exhaustion sustained in the continuous operating of an oil and gas property, and that each unit of oil or gas taken out reduces the value of the property until its final exhaustion. Depletion applies only to the natural deposits of oil and gas due to their-removal in the course of exploitation of any property. Depreciation is defined to cover the waste of assets due to exhaustion, wear and tear, and obsolescence of the physical property, and is separate and distinct from depletion; its allowance is that amount which should be set aside for the taxable year in such sums as for the useful life of ,the property will suffice to repay its original cost-or its value as of Mar: 1, 1913, if acquired by the taxpayer before that date-less the salvage value at the end of such useful life. Amortization is allowed for such facilities as were built or acquired on or after Apr. 6, 1917, for the production of articles contributing to the prosecution of the war and, in the case of vessels, those built and acquired after that date. The amount to be extinguished, in general, is the excess of the unextinguished or unrecovered cost of the property over its maximum value under stable .post-war conditions.

IN recent years, the advantages of tempered martensite as a microstructure for steel parts have been well established. For parts that must not fracture brittlely when loaded at high rates, at low temperatures, or under conditions of combined stress, tempered martensite is especially desirable. One of the factors that determine whether a steel part will have a martensitic structure after heat treatment is the hardenability of the steel. Despite the large amount of recent research, there are still many unsettled basic questions concerning hardenability and its relation to chemical composition, and, indeed, considerable disagreement among investigators in the field. Much of the uncertainty that beclouds the existing knowledge of hardenability arises from the fact that hardenability is still a wholly empirical concept, and has not been quantitatively related to the more fundamental knowledge of isothermal decomposition of austenite. Hardenability is, essentially, a measure of the time required for small percentages of austenite to decompose, during continuous cooling, to pearlite, bainite, proeutectoid ferrite, or proeutectoid carbide. In the practical heat-treatment of steel, also, the decomposition of austenite is usually not isothermal but rather during cooling, or, in general, is not at a single constant temperature. Thus, both hardenability and practical heat treatment involve anisothermal decomposition of austenite. In a previous publication1 the author and his collaborators outlined the principles that govern the relations between isothermal and anisothermal decomposition of austenite, and reviewed the experimental information available in 1945. To avoid repetition, familiarity with that article (Paper 1) will be assumed, and attention given primarily to work carried out or published since 1945. The method generally employed was explained in Paper 1: anisothermal transformation is studied through investigation of the effect of holding austenite at one temperature upon its subsequent decomposition at another temperature. Both temperatures are below the stability range of the austenite. This paper is confined to studies in which only a small amount of transformation occurred at the first temperature. This is the only case of importance in practical heat treatment when an essentially martensitic structure is sought. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE It was necessary to use different steels for the studies involving proeutectoid ferrite and for those involving proeutectoid carbide, because the two constituents have not been found to form in the same steel. Drilling was not entirely satisfactory in the search for native copper in the Osceola amygdaloid footwall, for oreshoots mined were more continuous than drilling indicated. The Geophysics Dept of Michigan Technological University developed a portable induced polarization drill hole probe with a 3-electrode configuration and a sampling radius of 5 ft ±. A 20 ma current of alternately reversed polarity is pulsed at 3.5 sec intervals and readings are taken every 2 ft. Potential is read during the "on" cycle for resistivity determinations. During the "off" cycle, after 10 ms delay, the 1P potential is sampled for 10 ms and recorded. Resistivity (ohm-ft) and "S" values (mv/v) are plotted on semi-log paper. A lithologic log is plotted based on resistivity and anomalous S values noted. The low resistivity amygdaloid contains sills of high resistivity basalt. Verified by core logs, contacts between amygdaloid and basalt could be picked to ± 0.5 ft from resistivity alone. Lithologic logs of long-steel holes, based on resistivity, then replaced sludge logging. An S value of 30 mv/v was established as the lower limit of diagnostic 1P effects in mineralized amygdaloid and 50 mv/v as a threshold value for ore. Of 914 footwall zones drilled, 315 were probed yielding 203 anomalies. Success increased from 34% for drilling to 72% for drilling and probing. As checked by mining, 46 probe results were 78% correct. Failures were due to the instrument not detecting copper or to the misinterpretation of an anomaly. No false anomalies were found. During the past ten years, the Calumet Div. of Calumet &Hecla, Inc has conducted extensive exploration and mining in the footwall of the Osceola amygdaloid lode in the native copper district in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In an attempt to delineate more clearly the extent and nature of high-grade footwall copper mineralization, 876 diamond drill and long steel holes aggregating slightly more than 47,000 ft have thus far been drilled from the accessible hanging-wall workings in the Osceola No. 6, 13, 14 and 15 shafts. Early in this program it became obvious, through inspection of footwall workings in progress, that due to the erratic and bunchy occurrence of the native copper in the footwall zone, the exploration drilling was failing to outline completely the extent of the oreshoots. Curtailment of production of crude oil, to the extent of effecting an approximate balance in supply and demand, was a problem confronting the oil industry in California throughout the year 1930. At the beginning of the year, with drilling operations only slightly checked, the California industry faced a steadily increasing potential production, an actual production in excess of market requirements and stocks of crude oil and refined products which had reached staggering proportions. During the year, the intensive development of the Playa Del Rey field and extensions to several oil fields, together with flush production from numerous large wells from both new and old fields, caused a steady increase in the state's potential production to a record peak in November of 1,186,000 bbl. daily. Despite the burden of this steady stream of flush production and the handicap of incomplete cooperation in several fields, curtailment successfully lowered the trend of crude oil production in California, except for the period of an open-flow test to determine actual potential production in several important fields in February. Under the curtailment programs in effect, the state's production of crude oil for the year was reduced 22 per cent. under the production of 1929 and even slightly under the production for the years 1927 and 1928. The total stocks of crude oil and refined products were reduced 2.7 per cent. during 1930, as compared to an increase of 30 per cent. in total stocks of all products during 1929. Drilling operations were reduced 28 per cent. as compared to drilling activities during 1929. Voluntary curtailment of drilling programs by many operators, particularly the major companies, accounts for the greatest portion of the reduction in drilling activity. The decline in drilling activity at Santa Fe Springs and in the east-side fields of the San Joaquin Valley was more than offset by development in new fields and extensions to deeper zones of old fields. There were 755 new wells completed during 1930, as compared to 910 completions in 1929. At the close of the year, 220 wells were drilling in the oil fields of California, 9 of which were being drilled in search of deeper producing horizons.

W. W. (Pop) Adams' contribution is short and to the point. "I went to Pueblo about March, 1881, and started working for the Pueblo Smelting & Refining Co. in the sampling room, going from there to the assay and chemical departments, and ending in charge of the lead refinery on the night shift. I was there about two years, returning to California in 1883. The plant was under the management of Mather and Geist, plus Charley Ballard; Herman Schlapp was the metallurgist. Herman Schlapp's name remains prominently in my recollection of Pueblo for his never-failing kindness and charity to the young men who were trying to learn the Pb. game. John Allen, Walter Koehler, George Westcott, Charley Molson, and Alfred de Ropp were there with me. Schlapp and Koehler I have never seen since I left Pueblo; the others I have met often. , Alfred de Ropp I have often met-here, as he was manager of the Selby Smelting & Lead Co. of San Francisco, for years. 'He tells me that I gave him the rudiments. of American profanity at Pueblo; an apt pupil, for since then, by his own efforts, he has added largely to his vocabulary..

PRESSING of powdered metal parts is best done in the direction of the shortest extension of the piece, to avoid too great a loss of pressing force through internal [ ] friction. As long as curved surfaces, recesses, or offsets occur only parallel to this shortest axis of pressure, no special difficulties arise: the cross sections, perpendicular to the pressure, do not vary, nor does the shape of the parts change during compression except for a gradually reduced thickness (Fig. IA). The problem becomes more difficult, however, when the curved surfaces or recesses are perpendicular to the shortest axis of the part (Fig. IB). Two processes for molding uniformly dense parts with complicated shapes from powdered metals are described in detail in this paper. Both can be employed successfully by those trained in the art. The first refers to curved parts; the second is especially adapted to parts having one or more recesses or steps. Both methods, as set forth here, are applied under the condition that presents the more difficult problem. For clarity, before description of the two practical methods, the variable factors in molding powdered metal parts will be reviewed, then an idealized procedure will be considered briefly. VARIABLE FACTORS IN MOLDING POWDERED METAL PARTS Compression Ratio Compression ratio is defined as the proportion of the final relative density of the compact to the apparent density of the powder. For iron powder of an apparent density of 3.0, for example, a compression ratio of 2 1/2 : I would be required to produce a compressed compact of 7.5 density; whereas for another iron powder having an apparent density of only I.5, a compression ratio of 5:I would be required to produce the same density. The lower the powder's apparent density, the greater must be the compression ratio for pressing compacts of high density.

Over the past two years the Office of Surface Mining in conjunction with Energy & Minerals Technology Assessment, ENCORE Systems Inc., and Boeing Computer Services has developed the Economic Coal and Ore Reserve Estimation (ENCORE) Coal Seam Modeling System. This system is being used by OSM, certain states, and industry for mine planning and mine plan permit review. The ENCORE system enables the mining engineer to start at the reserve estimation stage of surface mine planning and continue through the entire mine planning process and into the permit preparation process. The ENCORE system enables the state and federal regulatory authorities to assess a given mining and reclamation plan permit application in a rapid and efficient manner and greatly speeds up the mine plan review and permitting process. The ENCORE system is user friendly and menu driven thereby permitting the engineer with minimal computer training to rapidly learn and utilize the system. Data are input both through digitized map files and bore hole information files and stored in a data base that is an integral part of the ENCORE system. The system performs reserve estimation through standard polygon methods, least square methods, and geostatistical (kriging) techniques. Geostatistical routines permit rapid evaluation of coal and overburden quality and quantity. System outputs include drill hole sumnary and resource summary reports, cross sections, isopach maps, structure contour maps, premining topography maps, postmining topography maps, and three-dimensional perspective views. The maps can be displayed on a high-resolution, color graphics terminal or generated by a high quality plotter and are suitable for direct inclusion in the mining and reclamation pl an permit application. This paper gives detailed examples of ENCORE'S use together with example outputs.
