Discussion of the paper of George J. Young, presented at the San Francisco meeting, October, 1911, and published in Bulletin No. 59, November, 1911, pp. 839 to 872. ASKIN M. NlCHOLAS, Melbourne, Australia (communication to the Secretary) : * Professor Young deals with quite a variety of machines and methods, but, strangely enough, makes no mention of the work done by me, although he concludes with the remark that the " thin-cake continuous filters are a decided improvement over the thick-cake filters." As those interested in slime-treatment may consider that I did nothing more than to patent a process, I submit Fig. 1, showing the working-drawings of a machine, made, tested, and proved to work satisfactorily by me early in 1905. This time is prior to any work done in slime-filtration with rotating filters by E. L. Oliver or others. I maintain that a number of appliances now in use for slime-filtration infringe my patents. And after most exhaustive inquiry, I know of no machine or process, prior to my description in 1899,1 that embodied getting rid of the residues by holding them on the cloth with the vacuum, and then discharging them with back-pressure, so as to form a cycle of the operation, the result being continuous treatment. I therefore think that any paper dealing exhaustively with this subject is not complete without a reference to the work that I have done. * Received Mar. 11, 1912. 1 U. S. Secondary blast holes are now being pierced in quartzite and sandstone quarries, using multiple hand-operated Jet-Piercing units supplied with oxygen, fuel and water from a compact mobile carrier. A unit of this type, operating in a Canadian quarry, enabled four Jet-Piercing blowpipes to pierce blast holes for two hours without shutdown. The piercing blowpipes used were developed by Linde Air Products Co., a division of Union Carbide and Carbon Corp. The mobile supply carrier was constructed by the quarry from specifications supplied by Linde and modified by the quarry operators for their particular use. Employment of the new self-contained unit, which allows up to four operators to pierce approximately 450 ft of blast hole without shutdown, accelerates rock removal operations. Normally, only two blowpipes are in operation at one time. Large boulders or ledges, which sometimes remain after primary blasting to hamper loading operations, can, in the case of certain hard rock, be prepared for reduction more rapidly with these new units than by any other means. A special feature of the new manual Jet-Piercing unit is the mobile gas and fluid supply carrier. It consists of a standard truck chassis fitted out with four banks of large standard-capacity oxygen cylinders, a steel-holding tank for fuel oil, and a gasoline-driven air compressor and tank for pressurizing the fuel oil tank. Cooling water for the blowpipes is supplied to the unit from a hose extension to the quarry supply line. Feeder lines from the oxygen cylinder manifolds and the oil and water tanks terminate in four sets of take-off stations on the control panel at the rear of the truck. As many as four hand Jet-Piercing blowpipes can be connected to the take-off panel by high-pressure rubber hoses. The hand Jet-Piercing blowpipe used with the mobile supply carrier is a highly portable device which can be manipulated comfortably by one operator. The blowpipe can pierce blast holes at rates up to 60 ft per hour, depending on the properties of the rock. Blast holes can be pierced at any angle from the vertical to the horizontal, making it necessary for the operator to drill from the top of the boulder. Hole diameter is held to approximately that which allows the use of a standard 11/8-in. diameter dynamite. The manual Jet-Piercing blowpipe has these important design features: a burner from which the combustion gases emerge at supersonic speeds (in excess of 6000 ft per sec); a hole-sizing shell which controls the minimum size of the hole and protects the copper burner; and a sliding shield which protects the operator against the steam and spallings ejected from the hole during the piercing. The Jet piercing process has been applied successfully in United States and Canadian quarries within the last several years as an advanced method of "drilling" blast holes.

QUICKSAND far below the surface, stopped two attempts by the Potash Co. of America to sink a third shaft to a potash bed that lies 1000 ft below the southern New Mexico desert. Virtually all methods of grouting were employed in the two failures without any indication of consolidation of the flowing sand. Sinking the South Shaft at the Carlsbad potash mine seemed an almost insurmountable task, until freezing was employed as a final resort. This process that proved to be the answer may be defined as "the sinking of a shaft by freezing, consists of the formation, in the water-bearing strata, of a large block of frozen ground in which it is possible to sink a shaft without danger of an influx of water, providing the ice-wall between the water outside and the shaft itself is strong enough to resist the hydrostatic pressure." Freezing Method Used Extensively in Europe Successful frozen ground shaft sinking projects had been completed in Europe, and Russel G. Haworth, resident manager of the Potash Co. of America, went abroad in search of the know-how needed for the New Mexico undertaking. The freezing process, with a history of two failures at the time, was first successfully employed by Poetsch in 1885 at the Houssu Collieries near Haine St. Pierre, Belgium. Poetsch contracted to sink the remaining 64 ft of an uncompleted shaft through water laden strata from a depth of 190 ft to a depth of 254 ft. This work was in progress until 1887. The freezing and sinking consumed more than two years. As a result of early failures, the process was not favorably received until soon after the turn of the century. The accurate prediction of success in a given application was made possible by the concerted effort and study of a group of European engineers. Means of accurate deviation measurement and control were devised, the nature and properties of frozen water laden soil (the ice wall) were investigated, a thorough and rational basis of refrigeration load calculation developed, and concurrently the efficiency and dependability of refrigeration machinery was greatly advanced. Numerous shafts in Germany, Belgium, France, and England today testify to the reliability and economical surety of the freezing method. Applied to the South Shaft, which is circular in cross-section and 15-ft diam, the freezing method consisted of drilling holes 350-ft deep, through the water bearing strata into impervious ground-the freeze hole pattern being concentric with the shaft and 31-ft diam. The holes were cased with pipe closed on the bottom end. Smaller tubes were placed inside these casings and connected to a header supplying chilled brine from a refrigeration plant. The brine descended in the tubing to the bottom of the hole and ascended through the annular space between the two pipes to the top of the casing; flowed into the return header and back to the refrigeration plant. Two predictions of the oriented growth theory of recrystallization textures have been tested by measuring the orientation dependence of the rate of growth of a single grain into a strained single crystal of aluminum, and determining the orientations of artificially and spontaneously nucleated grains growing preferentially into strained aluminum single crystals. Growth rates are found to be insensitive to orientation, except that new grains with orientations similar to the matrix or to a twin of the matrix have very low mobilities. Similarly, new grains growing preferentially into a strained crystal have random orientations, except that orientations near that of the matrix or its twins are avoided. The predictions of oriented growth theory are thus not confirmed. BASICALLY, the oriented growth theory of re-crystallization textures1 rests on the assumption that the rate of growth of a recrystallizing grain depends strongly on the orientation of the growing grain relative to the strained matrix into which it grows. In particular, the theory holds that in face-centered-cubic metals the orientation which corresponds to maximum growth rate is one in which the growing grain and the matrix are related by a rotation about a common <111> direction. The amount of rotation, as derived from several kinds of experiments,2-1 has been assigned various values, generally in the range between 20" and 40". (A <111> rotation of 60" is a twin relationship.) The conclusion that boundary migration rates depend strongly on orientation is based almost entirely on indirect evidence; there have been very few direct measurements of boundary migration rates as a function of orientation.* " The present investigation was undertaken to provide such measurements, to help make possible a decision between the oriented growth and oriented nilcleation theories of recrystal-lization textures. The basic experimental program consisted of measuring the rate of growth of a single recrystal-lizing grain consuming a strained single crystal, with the orientations of both grains preselected so that the effect of orientation on growth rate could be determined. A prerequisite for such an experiment is a strained single crystal which will support the growth of a new grain but which will not spontaneously nucleate new grains on heating. That is, the crystal must support the growth of a grain nucleated artificially, but contain no recrystalliza-tion nuclei which will become active at the testing temperature. Beck was apparently the first to note that such a condition could exist," and to make use of the condition for am experiment of the type described here.&apos; The present work was actually suggested, however, by a report of Tiedema". " that an aluminum single crystal strip, oriented with a (111) plane in the plane of the strip and a < 112> direction parallel to the tensile axis, would not recrystallize after 20 pet extension even when heated almost to the melting point, provided that the strip was heavily etched before being heated. This result could not be duplicated in the present work. In fact, it was found that any crystal which deformed in multiple slip (<100>, <112> and <111> orientations) underwent spontaneous nucleation after 15 pet extension, even if etched. However, crystals which deformed in single slip, and which did not develop heavy deformation bands, could be extended 15 pet without showing spontaneous nucleation at temperatures up to 600°C. Crystals oriented within about 10o of <110> which developed heavy deformation bands could be extended 10 pet without showing spontaneous nucleation. In all cases a heavy etch was required to prevent nucleation. Etching was necessary because of the presence of an oxide layer on the crystal surface at the time of straining, which leads to preferential nucleation at the surface.&apos;&apos; Grain Growth Rates Experimental Procedure and Results—Aluminum strips of 99.6 pet purity (principal impurities 0.19 pet Fe and 0.12 pet Si), 1 mm by 1 cm in cross section, were grown into single crystals of controlled orientation by the strain-anneal method of Fuji-wara.&apos;"&apos; " A sharp temperature gradient was maintained in the strips during growth by lowering them into a salt bath controlled at 650°C. Crystal orientations were determined by the etch-pit method of Barrett and Levenson" to an accuracy of ±2O. The crystals were extended by 10 or 15 pet in a simple hand operated tensile machine. Crystal orientations were rechecked after extension, and were found to be in agreement with the orientations predicted by the formula of Schmid and Boas." After extension, the grip ends of the single crystal specimen were cut off with a jeweller&apos;s saw, and the crystal heavily etched (at least 20 pet wt loss) in hot 10 pet Na or KOH solution. A region of severe local deformation was then introduced at one corner of the strip, usually by cutting off the corner with shears. Heating this end of the strip caused a large number of new grains to nucleate at the sheared edge. One of these grains grew to occupy the full width of the strip. The appearance of the strip at

Relationships are derived between average dimensions measured on a polished cross section and the spatial dimensions of particles dispersed as uniform cylinders. The equations are applicable to the measurement of rods or plates without the stipulation that they be extremely thin. QUANTITATIVE analysis of the elements of mi-crostructures has been limited by a lack of knowledge concerning the relationships between observations on plane surfaces and the spatial nature of the structure. This paper is an extension of previous efforts to establish equations suitable for the quantitative investigation of microstructures. The equations derived fill two gaps in the range of particle shapes for which measurements may be required, namely those shapes lying between extremely thin plates and equiaxed particles (approximately spherical), and those intermediate between equiaxed particles and extremely thin rods or needles. In a previous paper&apos; equations were developed relating dimensions measured on a polished cross section to the average spatial dimensions of particles in the form of spheres, extremely thin plates, and extremely thin rods. For extremely thin rods the dimensions measured on a polished cross section were found to depend on the radius only, so that no information concerning the rod lengths or number of rods per unit volume could be obtained from observations on a cross section. In this paper equations are derived relating dimensions measured on a polished cross section to the spatial dimensions of particles in the form of identical cylinders. These equations may be used to evaluate the dimensions of rods, as well as the dimensions of plates, without the stipulation that the plates or rods be extremely thin. The impossibility of evaluating the length of extremely thin rods from planar measurements appears as an increase in the amount of data required for a given precision, as the length-radius ratio increases. Consider a sample containing particles of a phase in the form of cylinders of uniform radius T and height t. If the cylinders are randomly oriented, as in a sufficiently large sample of a fine grained poly-crystalline material, area and lineal analysis may be carried out with parallel cross-sectional planes and lineal traverses. If the cylinders are not randomly oriented, it is necessary to randomize the orientations of the cross-sectional planes and traverse lines. Let a unit cube be cut from the sample, and a cross-section plane be passed through the cube parallel to one of the cube faces. The number of particles N, cut by the cross-sectional plane per unit area is equal to the number of particles N, per unit volume times the probability p1 of a plane intersecting a single randomly positioned and randomly oriented cylinder in the cube. Let J be the maximum cylinder dimension in the direction normal to the cross-section planes, as shown in Fig. 1. This paper is limited primarily to a description of dry coal-cleaning processes in which air currents are used to effectuate a separation between coal and refuse. Processes depending mainly on differences in the coefficient of friction, resilience and shape are not described unless the use of air is necessary for the proper functioning of the process. The air cleaning of coal is of primary importance to the coal industry of the United States. From figures presented in the 1941 edition Mechannual, it is estimated that at least 12 million tons of bituminous coal was cleaned in the United States during 1940 by machines using air as the separating medium. One of the current problems confronting the coal-preparation engineer is the dry cleaning of small sizes and slacks. Progress in machine development for the cleaning of small sizes has been slow in recent years in the United States of America; it has been much more rapid in Britain and on the European continent. This paper does not attempt an exhaustive survey of all these developments, and only machines and processes that have found considerable commercial application are cited. Further, no critical analysis has been made of the theory involved in the separation of coal from refuse by processes using air as the separating medium other than that necessary for an understanding of particular machine designs and applications. The possibility of using air for the separation of coal from refuse was recognized early by mining men and many attempts were made to develop commercial machines. The ingenuity of the early experimenters is to be marveled at in view of their lack of knowledge of the theoretical principles involved. As in other arts, practice has largely preceded theory. Yet, science and practice play a game of leap frog, now one ahead, then the other; the careful experimenmenter governs his efforts along practical lines by adapting his experiments to the limits prescribed by scientific laws. By first studying developments and the theory involved, it is not only possible to adapt processes to new uses but also to reduce materially operating cost and to build larger units without costly failures. Although many inventors have applied for patents for separating minerals by the use of air currents, the literature in regard to coal is meager. Berrisford2 describes briefly some of the early attempts to clean coal without the use of water. Several of the examples cited by him are reproduced herein. Fig. I shows a machine used for grinding and; izing, in which rollers running in a pan with a perforated bottom and fan opening on the side crushed the coal, which was then carried by the air currents to a settling chamber. The heaviest particles dropped out first and the light ones farthest away, as shown. In the year 1864, a machine was made that could be used as a sizer or to separate dirt from coal with a sized feed (Fig. 2).

WHEN a steel in the austenitic state, with all its carbon in solution, is maintained, at constant temperature, in contact with a gas that removes the carbon from the surface, vet without otherwise altering the composition of the steel, the change in weight of the specimen, after any period of exposure, is a direct measure of the amount of carbon it has then lost. The purpose of the present paper is to show how, by application of established mathematical reasoning based on the fundamental diffusion law and on certain postulates, this loss of weight yields a complete picture of the distribution of carbon throughout a specimen of regular shape after any period of exposure, with all the accuracy required in any practical occurrence of decarburization. Precisely the same is true for the gain in weight during the reverse process of carburization, or for the gradual gain or loss of any element, so long as the steel comprises only a single phase at temperature, provided always that the experimental conditions conform to the postulates. The change in carbon content from surface to center of the specimen is always continuous, when everything is in solution, even though under the microscope the decarburized zone (or carburized rim) may appear to be sharply defined. The experimental procedure is described and some typical results are presented, which are then interpreted by application of the diffusion law. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Initially an endeavor was made to follow the gain of weight during the process of carburization in a hydrogen-toluene atmosphere, but it was soon found that the specimen became coated with graphite, which could not be removed without some loss of metal; therefore it was decided to continue carburization until the steel was saturated throughout, to remove all graphite from the surface of the specimen, and then to follow the loss of weight during decarburization in a moist hydrogen atmosphere at the same temperature as that used for carburizing. The carburizing procedure has been described in an earlier paper;1 it suffices to state here that the carburization lasted about 140 hr. at 760°C. (1760°F.) and 44 hr. at 1110°C. (2030°F.), these periods being long enough-on the basis of the calculations presented later-to ensure that the specimen was about 9.99 per cent saturated at each temperature. The speci¬men was a cylinder about 3.8 cm. long and 0.475 cm. in diameter; the materials were carbonyl iron, a commercial low-metalloid iron, and a steel with 3.6 per cent nickel and the usual proportion of other elements. The fully [carburized] specimen, after cooling at the top of the furnace tube, was placed in a lathe and sandpapered to remove all graphite; then the diameter was measured with a micrometer caliper, and the initial weighing (corresponding to complete saturation) was made. The Strataflow process for locating water entry in producing, wells is now available. This method as now practiced utilizes the fact that fluids of different salinities have different electrical resistivities. By introducing into the well a fluid of a markedly different salinity than that of the fluid being produced, a pronounced resistivity change will occur at the point of entry. By running a Strataflow survey the points of major and minor water entry may be interpreted from changes in the resistivity of fluid in the hole. Strataflow results are obtained with the well operating under almost normal producing conditions, and are a logical primary step in any workover program, having as its purpose shutting off of the water. INTRODUCTION Water production is a serious problem in many producing oil wells. It certainly increases lifting costs and in some cases presents a disposal problem. It often aggravates corrosion problems and can even endanger oil production. With accurate information to guide an effective workover program, many marginal wells could be restored to Profitable Production. The shortcomings of previous meth- ods of water entry location were recognized. The Strataflow process is the result of several years of development and field testing directed toward overcoming these limitations. It represents the continued development of a process reported by Silverman and Brown. The earlier work established the basic soundness of fresh-to-salt water resistivity contrast in delineating zones of water entry, but its application was limited by the difficulty of maintaining static balance of the well during preparation for the test. A more serious deterrent to its use, however. was its unadaptability to existing well logging service equipment and field operating methods. STRATAFLOW PRINCIPLE The general principle of the new method involves, first, conditioning the well by displacing the fluid in the bore of the well adjacent to the zone to be tested by a conditioning fluid which is miscible with the formation fluid. This displacement is carried out without interruption of the well production. The conditioning fluid must have some measurable physical, chemical, nuclear, or electrical property which is distinctive from that of the formation fluid. As the well continues to produce. formation liquid entering the well bore dilutes the conditioning fluid so that zones of entry may be determined by making a log of the property undergoing change. This general principle may be applied to indicate zones of either water or oil entry by suitable selection of conditioning fluid and proper logging equipment. The Strataflow process, as it is currently practiced for water entry location, uses fresh water as the conditioning fluid and depends for its operation upon the marked difference of electrical resistivity between this fresh water and the salty water produced by the formations. If possible. any necessary modifications of the well equipment are made a week or so before the test. The well is then returned to normal production. On the day the test is to be carried out. the conditioning water is landed at the bottom of the well and the test is made without interrupting production except for a brief period required for the conditioning water to consolidate into a continuous column extending to a point well above the test section. With this general description of the process in mind, a more detailed step-by-step description of the process will be clearer. PRELIMINARY PREPARATION OF WELL The Strataflow survey, as it is currently practiced for water entry location, is applicable only to pumping wells. INTRODUCTION Raising capital in the 1990s is a timely subject. However, many of us thought why should raising capital in the 1990s prove to be unlike it was in the 19805, the 1970s, the 1%0s, or earlier? There are a lot of creative people in banking and in corporate treasury departments. New tools and techniques are continuing to emerge, many of which are discussed in other papers in this book. While we have new financing tools at our disposal, the underlying issue has not changed. Projects and investments must be judged on their own merits. If they cannot be justified by conventional financial analysis, they should not be built. If they can be justified, it is likely that the financing will be available. The challenges faced in raising capital in this decade will persist to the next. The issues of the 1980s -- currency fluctuation, disruptive merger and acquisition activity, commodity price volatility, political risk, and debt crisis -- will all persist in an increasingly international business environment. I will focus on the financing we have just completed for the Escondida Copper Project in Chile. The Escondida financing is structured along the classic project financing model developed in the late 1970s, but it deals with issues of the 1980s and the 1990s. The financing was intriguing, not just because of the technical issues involved, but also the challenge of reaching an agreement in a large and diverse group. Escondida had the one essential feature that made its financing possible. It was commercially very attractive. It would produce at low cost a commodity (copper concentrates) that direct consumers felt would be in tight supply. The project had the direct support not only of its sponsors, but also its customers, and, very importantly, its host government. The non- recourse financing of Escondida would not have been possible without the support of these parties, and without the robust economics that made this effort worthwhile. The issue was more complicated. Operations in all parts of the world entail some political exposure. This project is in Chile, where there was a constitutional requirement that a plebescite be held when the project would be in its early stages. This plebescite would determine the fate of a 15 year old military dictatorship. The project is copper, a commodity generally deemed to be in surplus. Copper has a history of price volatility (whose price has varied from $.58 to $1.53 per pound over the past two years). It is politically sensitive, not only in Chile, but in the United States, Canada and other developed countries. The project is international, with all the problems of dealing with a variety of currencies, a variety of cultures, and a variety of laws and commercial practices. The project is also large and capital intensive, with a total cost of U.S. $1.1 billion. ESCONDIDA PROJECT Escondida, the largest known copper ore body in the world, was discovered in March of 1981, by Utah International in a joint venture with Getty Oil Company. In 1984, both Utah and Getty were involved in ownership changes, Utah being acquired by BHP. A later restructuring of the ownership of Escondida resulted in BHP, as manager, carrying a 60% interest, Rio Tinto-Zinc Corporation (RTZ) 30%, and a consortium of Japanese companies led by Mitsubishi Corporation with 10%. The Japanese consortium is incorporated as JECO (Japan Escondida Corporation). This ownership structure, which spread ownership around the world, was the first tangible step toward managing both the commercial and political risk associated with the project.

A NUMBER of new plants for the treatment of copper ores were completed or under construction during the year. Among these may be mentioned the plants of the International Nickel Co., those of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co. and of the Roan Antelope Copper Co. Three copper re- fineries have been constructed, one at El Paso, Tex., and the other two in Canada. Two more are projected, one in France and one in England. The International Nickel Co.&apos;s plant consists of an 8000-ton concentrator and a smelting plant containing thirty 10-hearth Herreshoff roasting furnaces, five reverberatory furnaces, and eight Smith-Pierce converter5 . The smelting plant is estimated to have a capacity of 5000 tons of ore or concentrate per day. The roasters are superimposed on the reverbratory furnace plant. As a consequence of this arrangement, the furnace building is unusually high. being 183 ft. from yard level to highest roof elevation.

IN this paper the effect of natural ventilation pressures is considered a part of the mine resistance and it is shown that their effect on the mine resistance is not the same as the total natural ventilation pressure of the shafts if the mine has several levels. It is shown that increasing the fan pressure causes the division of the air to approach the condition that would obtain if there were no natural ventilation pressure present. It is shown that if an appreciable difference in pressure is maintained between the beginning and end of a group of splits, the value of the integrated effect of the natural ventilation pressures on the individual splits does not change substantially with moderate changes of this pressure. A method is outlined for determining the resistance factor of the mine and the value of the effect of natural ventilation with the fan operating; also a method for determining this factor when circulation is caused by natural ventilation alone. NATURAL VENTILATION PRESSURE Natural ventilation pressure (N.V.P.) is caused by the difference in weight of the air in two similar columns between two horizontal planes, and the difference in weight is caused principally by the difference in temperature of the two columns. The fan pressure causes some variation in density, but, since it is usually small and affects both columns, its effect is relatively unimportant. It has been suggested that "N.V.P." be called "stack effect"; but, since the term N.V.P. was used in a previous Institute paper,&apos; applied in exactly the same manner, the term will be used. FRICTIONAL RESISTANCE The frictional resistance to flow in a mine without natural ventilation may be expressed as RQ2 where R is a constant for a given air density and Q is the rate of flow. This frictional resistance plus the effect of velocity changes will be called the F pressure (F.P.) and a curve of F.P. against Q, the F characteristic of the mine. If a pressure is applied to a mine by a fan, the air flow so adjusts itself that the drop in pressure through any path from entrance to exit of mine, due to frictional resistances and velocity changes, is the same as that in any other path. The mine resistance varies as the square of the quantity. The air distribution without N.V.P. will be called "normal." NATURAL VENTILATION PRESENT When N.V.P. is irregularly distributed in a mine, it is more convenient in analysis to consider the N.V.P. as a part of the duct resistance. If it is so considered the resistance no longer varies as the square of the quantity, and if N.V.P. exists between levels the distribution of the air is no longer normal. The total N.V.P. of the mine is the pressure caused by the full length of the shafts. If a mine has several levels, N.V.P. exists

WELL known member of the Institute, Henry Krumb, survived the Japanese earthquake and has written a most interesting description of his personal experience to a friend in New York, an extended excerpt from which we publish, by permission, below. Not having been written for publication it has increased value as a human document in its vivid description of personal impressions and sensations in the midst of such a catastrophe. The earthquake was the most terrible experience I have ever passed through. We arrived at Miyanoshita, Friday, Aug. 31, about 6 p.m., having left Yokohama about 2:30 that afternoon by automobile. It was a most beautiful ride, although rather warm, but not unusually so, as it has been uncomfortably hot ever since we arrived in Japan. The first part of this automobile trip was along the old highway from Kyoto to Tokyo, which is lined with fine old pine trees. There are 52 villages along this highway and we saw real Japanese country life: naked children, both boys and girls, and men wearing nothing but gee-strings. The country on either side was intensively cultivated, the green rice fields and lotus ponds making a most beautiful sight. The occasional hills were all re-forested with young pines. In places the road runs close to the ocean beaches. The last part of the trip was up a steep mountain road, cut out of the side of the mountain. On one side of the road, in the gulch below, was a roaring river. The road crosses this river several times. Miyanoshita is beautifully located on the side of a mountain about 400 ft. above this river at an altitude of 1400 ft. The grounds of the hotel are laid out in Japanese style, small lakes with fish, waterfalls and dwarf trees making a very pretty sight. On the morning of Sept. 1, after walking around the garden and the hotel, we went to our room and I started to write up a few notes. Mrs. Krumb was reading a guide book. A few minutes before noon she came over to the table where I was writing and said that it was about lunch time. Just at that moment hell broke loose. It was the first earthquake I have ever experienced and I did not immediately realize what was happening. The building was shaking as a mine office might shake when heavy blasting was going on near by. Mrs. Krumb, having experienced many earthquakes, stepped to the open door between our room and the bathroom and called to me to get out from under the chande-lier. The plaster was commencing to fall and a large wardrobe fell over. I then knew what was happening and ran to the win dow. Before I reached it a large chunk of plaster from the ceiling hit me on the head and cut my forehead and nose. Mrs. Krumb ran for the other window just as the marble mantelpiece and the dresser fell. Without any hesitation, she jumped out of the win-dow and I followed suit out of the other. Luckily neither of us sprained an ankle-we had jumped 8 ft. We started to runaway from the building but had not gone more than 25 ft. when a second shock or rather a continuation of the first became so violent and the ground under our feet was trembling so that it was almost impossible to stand up without holding on to a tree. The ground seemed to have become liquid and rocked violently, it seemed to me in a vertical direction. In some later shocks the movement was more horizontal. About this time Mrs. Krumb saw the blood on my face and commenced to break down, but only for a moment: As soon as she saw it was not serious she was all right and during the following days stood the experiences and hardships as well as the best of them:

At the present time, when lixiviation versus amalgamation is being so thoroughly discussed by practical men, and published information is so meagre, the following tests, made by students in the mining laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, may be of interest to others. It is suggested that,, in order adequately to represent the facts, this definition should he restricted by the following qualifications: a and b are the two metals, b diffusing into a. A. At the temperature in question a should exist as phase a 1 having a limited solubility for b. B. The supply of b by diffusion should be sufficient, in view of the rate of diffusion into a 1, to increase the concentration of b above the saturation value in a 1 so as to cause a new phase a2 to form. (7. The phase a2 should have a range of solubility for 6, thus rendering continued diffusion possible. D. In order that the columnar grains may be preserved in the structure the phase a2 should, of course, not suffer transformation on cooling. The phenomenon thus defined may be described as progressive transformation by diffusion. When the saturation value for the temperature of the experiment (m, Fig. 17) is reached at the surface, nuclei of, a2 of composition n will form here, and later develop into a continuous layer. Assuming that diffusion proceeds without irregularities and that transformation at any point sets in without lag—i. e., in the moment saturation is exceeded—the transformation a1-a2 will advance inwards on a cylindrical surface concentric with the surface of the rod. The discontinuity of composition at the transformation surface in the position it happens to have at the end of the treatment (3, Fig. 18) will be preserved at room temperature, if the cooling is not particularly slow, and be recorded in the structure as a marked, smooth line, in agreement with Grube&apos;s and the author&apos;s observations. The shape of the distribution curves in Fig. 18 is also corroborated by the analyses given by Grube. 2. During diffusion, since the secondary phase a2 is always in immediate contact with the saturated part of the primary phase a1, there should be very little lag in the transformation. This means that the first a2 grains formed should grow in preference to the formation of independent nuclei; in other words, columnar growth results. The first step in a quantitative analysis ot the mechanism of oil displacement by water in a fractured reservoir is usually conceded to be the solution of the differential equation describing the saturation distribution of two immiscible fluids flowing in a porous medium, where the capillary pressure is taken into account. In such a system the production mechanism may consist of displacement of oil both by the flow of water due to natural or artificially imposed pressure gradients and by imbibition, which implies a flow of water not due to external pressure gradients. Owing to the presence of the two oil displacement mechanisms, the mathematical model given by the differential equation intended to describe the system may not properly represent the behavior of the physical system. In fact, in the reservoir the rate of water advance may be very slow, and in the case of a fractured reservoir with a great number of large fractures, the pressure difference determining the flow of water through the matrix may be much less than 1 lb/&apos;psi over lengths of a few feet. In such a case, imbi-bition (the exchange between oil in the matrix and water in the fractures resulting from capillary forces) may become, with time. a significant element of the production mechanism. It occurred Lo the authors, however, that without going into a physical analysis of the process of production, it might be possible by means of simple abstract reasoning to throw some light on the variation of recovery with time under conditions occurring in a highly fractured oil reservoir with rising water table. The object of this paper is to present both the reasoning and its application to a reservoir of the highly fractured type. Specifically, the analysis given here was undertaken to try to explain the increase of recovery (as defined later) with time as observed in this reservoir, without having to assume unlikely variations in the reservoir parameters with depth. This attempt has been successful as will become clear upon comparison of the computed recoveries with the actual field data. ABSTRACT MODEL Let us consider a small volume. of porous matrix saturated with oil at time, t = 0. Let the process of oil displacement by water start at time, t = t,,. At some time, t, the process will have terminated. Then a volume of oil equal to or smaller than the original oil contained in the matrix will have been produced. The first basic assumption that describes the model and guides the forthcoming reasoning is that the oil production from the small volume. dv, is a continuous monotonic function of time and that it converges to a finite limit. Such an assumption is not inconsistent with the results of laboratory waterflood tests as well as with results of imbibition tests where this is, in fact, observed. The second basic assumption is that none of the properties which determine the rate of convergence change sufficiently during the process to affect this rate or the limit. To cope with the problems encountered when drilling at greater depths and to reduce the amount of physical effort required on the part of drilling crews in making round trips, a new type of semiautomatic power-operated drilling machinery has been developed which permits round trips to be made without the drill pipe being touched by hand. This equipment consists of hy-draulically operated tongs which perform the stabbing, spinning, and tong-ing operations, and two power-operated racking units mounted in the derrick for carrying the pipe to and from the center of the hole and positioning it on the mat and in the rack. With this equipment all of the operations of the various units are controlled remotely by manipulation of hydraulic valve levers and electric switches. INTRODUCTION As horsepower rises to meet the demand for deeper drilling, it is necessary to increase the weight of surface drilling equipment. Also, the duration of repetitive operations in making round trips to change bits is greatly increased with depth. Harder formations encountered at greater depths reduce bit life rapidly, resulting in more frequent round trips and in some instances more time is consumed in changing bits than in drilling. Since the introduction of the first rotary employed to drill for oil in 18951, there has been relatively little change in the general procedure for making up, breaking out, stabbing, and racking drill pipe in making round trips to change bits. The conventional method of making round trips with the drill pipe requires that drilling crews lend strenuous physical assistance to manually operated tools. Although many new devices have been developed to improve efficiency, increase speed of making round trips, improve safety, and reduce the amount of physical effort required in handling drill pipe, it is considered a vital necessity to substitute automatic or semiautomatic power-operated machinery for many of our more or less manual operations if extremely deep drilling is to be carried out successfully on a production basis in the same manner as our shallower drilling of today. Field tests have been made of remotely controlled power-operated tongs, spinner, stabber, and racking equipment. The tongs, which include a built-in pipe spinner, are mounted on a column, are capable of gripping and supporting the weight of a 90-foot stand of drill pipe, and are provided with means for moving the pipe vertically as well as to and from the center of the hole. The racking equipment consists of two units, one at the level of the conventional monkey board and the other at the first girth on the ladder side of the derrick. Most of the physical effort of making round trips with drill pipe has been eliminated in that all of the operations of tonging, spinning, stabbing, and racking of pipe on the floor are controlled by an operator in a seated position by manipulation of hydraulic and electric valve levers and buttons. The driller is relieved of operating the cathead, leaving only the hoisting and slips to be controlled. Complete round trips are made without the drill pipe being touched by the drilling crews. Although the speed of pulling or running a single stand with the power-operated equipment is approximately the same as that with conventional equipment, it is possible to maintain this rate for long periods, whereas fatigue slows crews working conventionally during round trips, especially under adverse weather. After completing round trips with this equipment, drilling crews are not exhausted, consequently, are able to perform effectively their duties while drilling, which is essential for maximum over-all efficiency. Safety is substantially improved as the derrickman performs his duties from a platform enclosed by rails and the tong lines and spinning chain are eliminated from the derrick floor. The hazards encountered in racking drill pipe on the floor and in stabbing are also eliminated. A method has been developed for continuously measuring the moisture content of coal. The method is based on the thermalization of fast neutrons by hydrogen in the coal. Neutrons from a small radio-isotope source penetrate the coal, are scattered by hydrogen, and measured by a thermal neutron detector. The number of thermal neutrons counted can be directly correlated with the moisture content of coal. In a pilot-scale system, moisture was measured continuously within 0.2% in coal moving at rates up to 20 tph. The method is adaptable in industry for continuously measuring the moisture content of coal at high tonnage flow rates. Such an application would permit continuous recording of moisture in coal without sampling and facilitate quality control. An automatic and continuous method of measuring the moisture content of coal is needed by the coal industry. Automatic control of the coal quality would reduce the cost of coal preparation, improve the product, and thus indirectly increase the use of coal. Moisture in coal can be determined by several methods, but the time required to obtain samples and analyze them by existing methods makes it difficult, if not impossible, to control the quality of the product. Both producers and consumers need a method for continuous and instantaneous measurement of moisture content without sampling in order to regulate process equipment and keep the moisture content of coal within specifications. At the Morgantown, W. Va., Coal Research Center we are developing a nuclear method for continuous measurement of moisture in coal. This method is based on the thermalization of fast neutrons by hydrogen in the water and organic matter of coal. Neutrons from a small radioisotope source penetrate the coal, are scattered by hydrogen, and are measured by a thermal neutron detector. The number of thermal neutrons counted can be directly correlated with the moisture content of coal. Design of a moisture meter based on neutron thermalization depends on many variables, any or all of which can affect the sensitivity of the meter. These factors include those related to the nuclear aspect; type and size of neutron flux and source, type of detecting device, and background count; and those related to the coal being tested: rank, particle size, and ash content. A survey was initiated to eliminate the relatively insignificant factors and to ascertain the magnitude of the major effects. Such information was necessary to fully evaluate the technique and to establish design criteria. Coal contains a relatively large amount of hydrogen in the organic coal substance and the water of hy-dration of the shaly material as well as in the moisture. To apply this concept of moisture measurement to coal requires that the organic substance in coal from any one seam of a particular mine be uniform in hydrogen content. The difference in total hydrogen content of wet and dry coal is relatively small, so that a moisture measurement based on this concept requires a measurement between two large numbers to a high degree of precision. Thus, it was necessary to develop a highly precise instrumentation system for continuous measurement and to obtain a physical arrangement permitting measurement of moving coal with a minimum effect from density variation. EXPERIMENT WITH TRAYS OF COAL Tests were conducted with metal trays containing SO to 100 lbs of coal to develop an instrument system of high precision. A scaling system with a maximum instrument error of 0.2% was used to test different types of thermal neutron detectors. The most suitable type of detector was a boron-10-lined proportional counter tube. While this type of detector showed satisfactory stability, extensive testing disclosed a long-term count reduction probably due to some type of deterioration in the detector. However, development of an electronic system using dual detectors eliminated this deterioration as a serious problem. (The second detector would be used to measure a reference drum of dry coal — the difference in count rate between the wet coal and dry reference coal being a direct measure of moisture content.) Table I, column 1, shows typical results with a 1-curie plutonium-beryllium neutron source and a thermal neutron detector beneath a tray of coal and illustrates the precision of measurement.
