HYDROGEN embrittlement of steels has recently attracted much attention because it is asso- ciated with a variety of failures, especially those of aircraft structural components.' For instance, one of the undesirable properties of the ultra-high strength steels used for landing gears is their pronounced susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement during plating. The presence of hydrogen in these steels becomes particularly apparent through delayed or sustained load failures of parts which have been subjected to low loads for an extended time. Co., Milwaukee, Wis.) — Fuerstenau and Cohen have concluded from our study of single particle crushing, which had suggested that the size moduli of the crushed specimens were determined by the specific energy expended independent of feed size, that the same independence with respect to feed size exists for the specific energy-product size relationship for rod mills. They present data supporting this conclusion. Our single particle crushing experiments were on single spheres of soda-lime (type of glass was not given in our study) glass for which the feed size can truly be neglected. However, the feed size cannot be neglected in any case where the effective size modulus of the feed is not too much coarser than the size modulus of the product. This can be illustrated in the second experi- ment of Fuerstenau and Cohen where the feed is considered to be the original -6 +%mesh material. However, one can also consider the product from the 7.5-min grind to be the feed for the 10, 15, 20, 25-min grinds, and the 10-min product to be the feed for the 15, 20, 25-min grinds, etc. If the specific energy-product size moduli curves are drawn for these other feeds, as shown on Fig. 3, the new curves (and some curvature is apparent) are much steeper than the -6 +%mesh feed line. The slopes of these new curves are about -1.5, —1.8 and -3.0. This observation is in accord with the observation by Bond, who states that the net specific energy input to a grinding mill is equal to the specific energy represented by the product less the specific energy represented by the feed. Mine-run ore is received at Vitro in gondola cars and fed directly to a Cedar Rapids impact crusher. Following screening, the undersize travels through a recently installed three-stage sampling plant where successive cuts are executed by conventional Geary-Jennings type cutters to produce a final sample of 1 lb per ton of raw ore fed. Crushed ore is transported to one of three storage silos or to stockpile, depending upon grade and type of amen- ability. This permits the blending of a mill feed with some degree of consistency. Final grinding is accomplished in one of two closed circuit ball mill-classifier systems allowing simultaneous processing of two basic types of ores. High acid consumers may be leached separately in the required environment. Part of the free acid remaining can then be utilized by an ore stream entering later whose component ores require much less free acid for leaching.

Pole figures, torque curves, and coercive force have been determined for the following rolled and annealed permanent magnet alloys: Cunife, Cunico, Silmanal, Vicalloy I, Vicalloy II, and Heusler's Alloy. IN the general category of precipitation-type permanent magnet alloys there is a group of ductile alloys, including Cunife, Cunico, Silmanal, Heusler's Alloy and Vicalloy, which can be extensively rolled and annealed to develop a preferred orientation in the crystals of the matrix material. The rolling and annealing textures of Cunifel and Vicalloy' have been previously investigated qualitatively, but no pole figures are available in the literature. THE relative partial molar heats of solution in liquid tin have been determined for phosphorous, arsenic, and antimony at 750°K. This work was carried out as part of an over-all program to determine the heats of formation of the III-V semiconducting compounds. A differential twin-type liquid tin solution calorimeter was used in the investigation. All three elements are endothermic upon solution in tin. The relative partial molar heats of solution go through a minimum value at arsenic. No concentration dependence of the heat of solution was found in the dilute (0 to 2 at. pct solute) solution range investigated. The measured heat effects and the calculated relative partial molar heats of solution at infinite dilution are listed in Table I along with the relative heat contents of the solutes calculated from the data of kelley.1 All of the values are referred to 750°K even though the calorimeter temperature fluctuated by *1°K during the course of the experiments. In this range of temperature change no variations were found which were outside the experimental error. This would be expected since the partial molar heat of solution is in general a very insensitive function of temperature. The limits of error given in Table I represent the standard deviation from the mean. The reported error estimates only apply to the estimated precision of the data and not the accuracy. Systematic errors could be present which would affect the absolute values given. This is especially true in the case of phosphorous and arsenic where vaporization could occur. If this were true, the experimental values reported here would be too high and the true partial molar heat of solution would be less than that given in Table I. Moreover, the heat-content data could be in error and this would also affect the calculated values. A study utilizing neutron diffraction, electrical resistance, and chemical extraction has been carried out to clarify the chromium-rich part of the miscibility gap previously proposed for this system. This gap appears to be more symmetrical than previously supposed and is very flat. This flatness is believed to be the result of a cooperative phenomenon perhaps of magnetic origin; in particular, it is believed that the chromium-rich phase is antiferromagnetic. The presence of antiferromagnetism is believed to result in an additional strengthening mechanism very sinzilar to that for ordered precipitates. Likewise, it is proposed that the quenched alloys which are known to be ferromagnetic have antiferromagnetic regions which accounts for the maximum in hardness around 75 pct Cr. It is also believed that the existence of antiferromagnetism in other alloys of transition elements might explain some of their anomolous characteristics. This paper presents the results of studies of the elasticity of some isotropic and anisotropic rock samples based on longitudinal- and shear-wave pulse velocity measurements. Experimental evidence from velocity measurements on isotropic steel samples is also presented to show, within error limits, that any two of the elastic constants required to completely describe the elasticity of an isotropic solid can be obtained from any two of the following four velocity measurements: longitudinal "rod,' "plate," extended medium (infinite medium equivalent), or shear wave. Measurements of three of these velocities in an approximately isotropic basaltic rock sample are used to illustrate this application to this type of rock. For the anisotropic study, a suite of Colorado oil shale samples is used. These rocks exhibited transverse isotropy. The five elastic constants required to completely specify this type of anisotropy are obtained from longitudinal- and shear-wave pulse velocity measurements made in directions parallel, perpen-dicular, and at 45° to the bedding plane. Density, velocity, and elastic modulus relationships among these shales are also given. Duvall 1 has described a method for determining the elastic constants of isotropic and, in two cases, anisotropic rock samples. This method is based on ultrasonic pulse techniques and on resonance-frequency measurements of rock samples in the shape of rods (diamond drill cores). IN the search for practical geological problems amenable to solution by the potential methods, the geophysicist is led to study mathematically various theoretical cases. In these idealistic discussions, the media under consideration are generally supposed to be homogeneous and iso-tropic. The geophysicist, of course, realizes perfectly that these condi-tions do not occur in their entirety in reality. However, the assumptions made are justified, because very often they are necessary in order to render possible an exhaustive study of a given problem, which otherwise would be too complicated, and would not lend itself to a complete mathe-matical analysis. Of the above two assumptions, that concerning the homogeneity of a given geological formation is satisfactorily realized except in so far as isotropy is concerned, since this property is not often encountered in practice. As a consequence, it is very desirable for the geophysicist to have quite an extensive knowledge of the properties of anisotropic forma-tions, and of the laws that govern the propagation of electric current therein. With such principles in mind, he will be able to decide whether the conclusions arrived at in simple, isotropic conditions are still correct in more complex cases, or in what way they must be modified or adapted in order to constitute a sound basis for the interpretation of the results obtained in anisotropic media. On the other hand, the fact that in anisotropic formations themobility of the ions is greater along the strike than perpendicular thereto can be utilized for determining the direction of the dip by induc-tion measurements. We therefore propose to study in three successive chapters the following points: 1. Propagation of the electric current in anisotropic media. 2. Some consequences of the anisotropy of geological formations with reference to the surface electrical measurements, and their interpretation. 3. Determination of the direction of the dip of anisotropic formations by surface induction measurements.

Using an approach based on the theory of similitude, the author develops a general equation and related concepts that provide new insights to an old problem. The load-bearing capacity (strength) of a square, rectangular, or cylindrical prism of a brittle material such as rock, coal, or concrete is expressed as the mathematical product of a size effect, a shape effect, and a function of the mechanical properties (deformability, cleat/joint spacing, and friction) of the pillar, roof, and floor materials. Through an application of multivariate statistical analysis, the results of assorted tests (laboratory and in situ) and observations of failed pillars can be combined into a fundamental scaling equation, which provides a unified, consistent approach to the estimation of mine pillar strength. The form of the equation is sufficiently general to be able to incorporate refinements in the characterization of the structural parameters, as they become available through future analysis and experimentation. Analysis of the published test data suggests that pillar compressive strength (per unit of area) is proportional to the cube root of the pillar width, and that the height effect can be described as the superimposing of a variable size effect (characteristic of the material) on the constant width effect.

The necessary assumptions are that the initial distributions of concentration are sinusoidal and that the four interdiffusion coefficients are constant. Employed in the deriuation were the Laplace transform and the fouter Fourier sine transfovwz. The final equation is shown to be in good agveetnent with the experimental results of Kirkaldyet al. on Cu-Sn-Zn alloys. COMMON boundary conditions for representing physical problems are those of the finite solid and of the infinite solid. Many metallurgical phenomena, however, have the geometrical form of a finite pattern reproduced throughout an infinite solid. Precipitation within a uniform matrix and segregation during solidification are examples. The purpose of this treatment is to show that a convenient and useful mathematical analysis is possible in those cases in which the finite pattern can be approximated by a sine function. The particular topic to be considered here is the elimination of segregation by diffusion, but the mathematical model has applicability in many other areas. It should be recalled that the mathematical solution of a typical problem involving a finite solid, such as diffusion into a thin layer, is quite involved.' Various types of solutions are used depending on the degree of advancement of the diffusion process and on the initial conditions. I. GENERAL INTRODUCTION. TECHNICAL progress takes place in two directions: the improvement of methods, affecting the quality of the product; and increase in the economy of operations, affecting its cost. In the iron-industry, practice is pretty well settled, and. revolutionary changes of method are, for the present, not to be expected. Hence, in this industry, the principal endeavor is to reduce costs by the use of labor-saving inventions, such as the machines brought into use during the last decade. But it is not alone necessary to reduce the labor-cost; complete economy requires also a saving in raw material. Under this head we may rank the coal employed as metallurgical fuel; and it follows that progress includes the economic use of fuel, so managed as not to injure quality of product. In the present paper it will be shown how, by suitable utilization of the heat from the furnace, a large portion of it may be made available for other purposes. Such utilization of waste-gases is important in all industries which employ furnaces (especially heating- and smelting-furnaces); and in the first rank of these stand the iron-, glass-, and porcelain-manufactures. The following pages are devoted chiefly to the waste-gases of smelting-works, and especially to those reverberatory-furnace gases which are not combustible.'

THE losses of gold and silver occurring during the conversion of the precipitate, resulting from the cyanide process, into bullion may occur in two ways: first, there may be mechanical losses during the handling of the precipitate up to the time that it is charged into the melting furnace; and second, there may be losses after the precipitate reaches the melting furnace. Much of the loss during the handling of the pre-cipitate can be eliminated, and in fact, in modern plants this loss is known to be very small; particularly since preliminary acid treatment of the precipitate with the attendant extra operations has been abandoned in all but certain plants where gold predominates and this extra step is still deemed necessary. The losses in the melting furnace are from dusting and volatilization; losses in the furnace bottom and linings; floor sweepings; and slag and matte. The gold and silver in the: products which do not: go out of the flue are readily recoverable by standard methods, and while there may be considerable gold and silver tied up at times, the ultimate loss with careful "work should be small. The losses resulting from volatilization and dusting in connection with the melting of the silver slime from copper refineries have been determined by standard methods, and the possible recovery: definitely estab-lished through the installation and operation of electro-static precipitation units. This subject has not been thoroughly investigated in connection with the melting of`. cyanide precipitate; at least, there are no published accounts of such tests. Experiments have been made in the past to determine melting losses by weighing and assaying the precipitate, but this method gives results which are uncertain on account of the difficulty of accurately sampling and assaying cyanide precipitate. Attempts to ascertain these losses by bubbling a measured sample of the gas through cyanide solution or, other absorbent have likewise failed to give depend-able results.

This establishment being now in full working order, it has seemed of considerable professional interest to collect together, in a concise form, the various points as to its plan, method of dressing, and equipment. The data contained in this paper have been largely drawn from the able paper of E. Kutscher, constrnoting engineer of the works, contained in the Zeitschrift fur Berg-HÜtten-und Salinenwesen im Preussischen Staate, 1873, supplemented by some personal memoranda made while the works were under construction and by memoranda on the works appearing in various German technical papers from their completion up to date. This is probably the largest dressing works in the world devoted to the beneficiation of argentiferous lead ores, and it is doubtful if any establishment for the concentration of mineral of any description can compare with it in size. As showing the final practice adopted in an old and very conservative mining region, in which the concentration of ores has been a matter of constant practice and experiment for a very long period, these works are of peculiar interest. The fact that the Clausthal ores strongly resemble a very large and abundant class of ores found in the United States has always attracted the attention of American mining engineers and mine owners to the methods employed in dressing and smelting them. The study of their methods of concentration of ores has, however, always been full of difficulty,
