The Mount Wright iron are mine and upgrading plant were brought on line in the fall of 1975. The mine is located near the Quebec - Labrador border some six hundred miles northeast of Montreal. This paper describes the crushing, grinding and concentrating facilities at Mount Wright, and some design: criteria used in equipment selection and flow sheet design. Also mentioned are some "asbuilt" modifications. A brief description of the over-all flowsheet is also included. Introduction IN SEPTEMBER 1970, the Quebec Cartier Mining Company started development of the Mount Wright iron ore mine. The estimated are reserve is in excess of 1,000,000 ,000 long tons of concentrates, with an average crude are grade of 31.5% Fe. The run-of-mine ore is crushed, ground and concentrated to a product having 66% Fe and 5% silica at an annual concentrate production r ate of 18.4 million long tons. The daily production rate of over 50,000 long tons of concentrate necessitates a daily mine output of approximately 250,000 long tons of material, of which 50% is waste.

Location and History The Sherritt Gordon property is located in northwestern Manitoba, about 100 miles north of The Pas and 40 miles northeast of Flin Flon. It is connected with the Manitoba Northern railway, which runs from The Pas to Flin Flon by a branch line, 42 miles in length. The location of the property is shown on the sketch-map, Figure 2. The ore deposit was first discovered by Philip Sherlett, a Cree Indian, in 1922. In 1924 Sherlett's claims lapsed and the ground was re-staked by Carl Sherritt and Dick Madole, and was optioned by them to J. P. Gordon in the summer of 1925. Gordon re-optioned the property successively to three well-known mining groups, one of which did some surface trenching .and put down 28 shallow diamond-drill holes before dropping their option. In the latter part of 1927, a Company known as Sherritt Gordon Mines, Limited, was formed to take over the property, and preparations were made for systematic development work. Preliminary Development In order to fill-in gaps left by the original drilling, a light diamond-drill outfit was flown-in to the property from the Hudson Bay railway in the early fall of 1927. Ten shallow holes were put down before freeze-up .and a considerable amount of surface trenching was completed. Based on the results of the surface trenching and the shallow diamond-drilling, an extensive development campaign was outlined. A winter road, 90 miles in length, was cut from mileage 55 on the Hudson Bay railway, and during the winter of 1927-28 a total of 2,600 tons of freight was hauled-in to the property. This freight included four complete diamond-drill outfits, two complete mining plants, building material for two sets of camps, and supplies for one year's operations, including 105,000 gallons of fuel-oil for Diesel engines.

The high temperature hydrochloric acid leaching of titanium slag in the QIT upgraded slag process (UGS) creates a harsh environment for materials of construction. Because of their excellent chemical and heat resistance, furan mortars are a key component in the lining system of the UGS pressure leach reactors. Similar products coming from different manufacturers have however shown unequal performances in service. In some cases, cracking of the brick lining has occurred during curing of the mortar. This study was initiated to investigate the impact of the curing conditions on the properties of carbon filled furan mortars. Laboratory tests were conducted to assess the effects of temperature and exposure to water and HCl solutions on mortar shrinkage and mechanical properties (tensile, compressive and bond strength). Three commercial furan mortars that have been used in the UGS leach reactors were thus characterized. Mortar properties were found to vary significantly among the products tested. Moreover, the curing conditions were shown to have a significant impact on mortar shrinkage and mechanical strength. The experimental findings provide explanations for the unequal performances of the mortars in service and for the problems of brick lining cracking that occurred in the UGS leach reactors. This study demonstrates that excessive mortar shrinkage compromises the integrity of a brick lining system.

Horizontal directional drilling from existing underground workings will greatly reduce, if not replace, surface exploration drilling. Diminishing ore reserves along with increasing difficulty in acquiring access and permitting of drilling surface holes requires a change in procedure. The length and direction of the required long holes is site specific, but once determined could be quickly mobilized. Data would be available for a much more timely evaluation without any surface disturbance and required reclamation issues. Preplanned directional drilling from underground will also provide an evaluation of already inconsistent uranium deposits located under surface terrain that is inaccessible to surface drilling.

The principles and utility of in-situ coal gasification are discussed, and a first field test conducted by the Alberta Research Council in 1976 near Forestburg, Alberta, is described. The test was carried out in a 12-ft subbituminous coal seam under 60 feet of cover. Within this seam, a 30 by 60-foot block , containing approximately 650 tons of coal, was delineated by four injection/production holes which were oriented to take advantage of the natural fracture system in the coal. Linkage between holes was established by reverse combustion and gasification was accomplished by injecting air into the ignited coal. No steam was injected but operating pressures were adjusted to utilize formation waters for partial carbon -steam gasification. The coal gasification runs lasted six weeks and gasified an estimated 900 tons of coal ,' during sustained periods of gasification, a fuel gas with heating values of between 110 and 150 Btu/scf was obtained. Plans are now being developed for excavating the test site and inspecting the subsurface cavities created by gasification.

"Alkali precipitation of dissolved metals is an inexpensive but non-selective means of treating mine wastewater. Alternatively, sulphide precipitation can treat to below parts-per-million concentrations while selectively recovering valuable metals. While technically feasible, sulphide treatment of dilute waste streams increases the size and cost of the plant relative to the metals loading. Ion exchange has been applied at two separate sites to pre-concentrate nickel containing wastewater prior to recovery in smaller and more cost effective sulphide precipitation circuits. The result is a dual-circuit system that can maintain high selectivity and reduce overall facility cost while meeting strict effluent regulations.INTRODUCTIONAlkali precipitation using lime is the most common method of treating mining effluents for dissolved metals removal. This method is generally sufficient for waste streams containing mixed metals of little value, and for meeting modest metal concentration limits in the final effluent. Due to the non-selective nature of the lime process, the produced metal hydroxide sludge is of little value. All metals are removed together in a sludge product which cannot be re-processed for further value recovery.By contrast, sulphide precipitation can be used to selectively remove and recover valuable base metals (such as copper, zinc, nickel and cobalt), since the sulphide will preferentially target these metals without reacting with less valuable metals (such as iron and aluminum). The low solubility of the metal sulphide solids also supports the removal of base metals to lower concentrations than can be achieved with alkali precipitation in addition to other benefits discussed more fully in a prior paper (Bratty, Lawrence, Kratochvil & Marchant, 2006). The corollary to this solubility feature is that sulphide precipitation can function on influent streams containing low (< 10 mg/L) metals concentrations to meet very low parts-perbillion final effluent concentrations. Reagent overdosing is also minimized when compared to alkali precipitation."

Interest in monitoring nucleation overpotential in electrometallurgical processes dates back some 40 years or more. Conversely, remarkable progress has been made in recent years on describing in detail the processes involved in the formation of thin films by electrodeposition. The newer body of work underscores a need for greater clarity in speaking about the role of nucleation and in the acquisition and interpretation of nucleation overpotential measurements – the aim of this paper. In electrometallurgy, it is generally desirable to form deposits that remain smooth, compact, and relatively fine-grained while the deposit grows to a thickness on the order of 5-10 mm, about 100 times thicker than technological thin films. Hence, we distinguish two kinds of nucleation that can result in formation of new grains:- (1) initial nucleation (onto the substrate surface) of islands that coalesce into growing deposit, and (2) ongoing nucleation of new grains on the deposit surface long after the substrate has been covered and ceases to have a direct influence. Nucleation overpotential of the first type should be measured on an electrode surface truly representative of a real industrial substrate. The second type requires judicious choice of electrode material – an “ideal foreign substrate”. In general neither the industrial substrate nor native metal to be deposited is suitable for measurement of the second type of nucleation overpotential, because of interference by other processes. For the future, clear terminology is needed to distinguish these two types of nucleation potential. The second is the one for which the type of plot dubbed by Moats and Derrick as an “Adcock plot” and by us as a “Kerby-Adcock plot” was first conceived and correlated with relatively thick zinc electrodeposits. The data of Moats and Derrick showing trends for copper electrodeposition on stainless steel and on copper electrodes are interpreted within this framework.

In March 2003, Phelps Dodge started up an innovative pressure leach facility for processing copper concentrates at the Bagdad mine in Arizona. This paper describes the development of the concentrate leaching plant at Bagdad and the operational results from start up to present. Optimization efforts and an approach to mineralogical modeling of the concentrate to calculate oxygen utilization are also presented.

The main application of refractories based on andalusite in ferrous metallurgy are in air heaters of blast furnaces, mobile mixers, and hot-metal transfer, pig iron ladle, steel-casting, and intermediate ladles. Three specific properties of andalusite are very interesting for the production of high-quality shaped and unshaped mullite refractories: being free of water, its crystal a remains stable without changing its density or volume after firing and therefore has no internal porosity .Graphite additives due to its great wetting ability play an important role in raising the property of refractory bodies. In order to improve properties of andalusite graphite bodies, oxidant agent for increasing in hot strength and oxidation resistance can not be avoided. In this research, firstly 8 pig iron ladles from ESC(esfahan Steel company) with different conditions selected and monitored during usage to determine of main factors affecting on corrosion of refractories. Results showed that tap to tap time, undischarged pig iron ,penetrated pig iron are the main ones.Literature studies showed that the graphite addition help to thermal shock resistance and liquid penetration(steel,pig iron) effect. In this research particle size distribution of aggregates containing andalusite and graphite determined by andreazen equation. Then different mixes with different percentage of graphite,Si, FeSi, SiC prepared by uniaxially pressing under 1500kgf/cm2 pressure by adding 4%wt novalak resin and 0.4%wt HMTA as hardner. Samples fired at 1100-1500oC under reduction atmosphere. According to specific standards density, porosity and CCS measured. Analytical tests such as XRD, SEM were carried out on sample selected from point of view of mechanical properties at different temperatures. Results showed that optimized amount of Si and Fe-Si for _-SiC formation in body is 4 and 6 %wt respectively at 1500OC. XRD and SEM analysis on sample with Fe-Si additives showed no destructive phase through the matrix, also SiC additives not only increase oxidation resistance but also no effect on thermo-mechanical properties.

"An experimental study of chemically enhanced filtration and dewatering of fine coal slurry with and without additives was carried out. The experiment involved determination of effect of slurry concentration, additives (cationic, anionic and nonionic), filter area, filtration velocity, particle size and cake resistance on dewatering and filtration using vacuum filtration cell. Finally, the rate of filtration and dewatering and optimum amount of additives used were determined under suitable filtration condition. Overall, it was found that the filtration and dewatering characteristics were enhanced by increased slurry concentration, larger filter area and larger particle size. In addition of additives, the kerosene was found to be best for enhancing the filtration which yielded cake moisture reductions of approximately 17% by weight. At optimum dosages, the final cake moisture contents were reduced by 3.6% and 5.8% by weight using the appropriate surfactant and flocculent, respectively.INTRODUCTIONFor India, it is estimated that coal constitute a principal source of energy for the next several decades. It is majorly used at thermal power plants to generate electricity and also to a great extent in steel and cement industry. It has been observed that its consumption is increasing so as to meet the energy requirements of the country. It has been found that in a coal preparation plant; approximately 20-25 percent coal is of the mined coal of the range below minus 0.5 mm (28 meshes). Generally, this fine fraction is discarded due to its high cost of processing and further utilisatisation is very minimal. But with ongoing research and development for advanced clean coal technology, various new techniques have been evolved to maximize the utilization of available coal. In recent time technologies such as column flotation, cleaning of fine size coal to lower the ash content and low pyretic sulfur is feasible at high recovery value. But in various researches it is found that one of the biggest hurdles in utilization of fine coal cleaning technology by the coal industry is the economic dewatering of the fine clean coal product. Thus, until an economical and practical solution to dewatering of fine clean coal is achieved, the efforts devoted to developing fine clean coal technology will be wasted. In this paper an effort toward enhancing and developing the optimum technique of dewatering and filtration of fine coal slurry has been made."

"A refractory lead-zinc oxide ore located in Yunnan has hundreds of tons of metal reserves, which is hard to be recovered effectively by conventional oxide ore beneficiation methods. In this study, by sulfidation roasting of raw-ore, sulfide deposit is formed on the surface of the lead-zinc oxide ore, and then the roasted ore is processed with bulk flotation. The test results indicate that a bulk concentrate with grade of 7.85% lead and 34.24% zinc, recovery of 79.13% lead and 79.04% zinc, respectively, can be obtained by using conventional sulfide ore flotation method.The sulfidation process shows that pyrite in the raw ore releases S firstly, then S reacts with PbO and ZnO to transform into PbS and ZnS. When the mole ratio of sulphur:zinc is 0.59, the surface of smithsonite is covered with a layer of zinc sulfide. When the mole ratio of sulfu:zinc rate is 1.47, entire simthsonite particle is transformed into zinc sulphide. Thus the transformed particles can be recovered by flotation without complete sulfidation.INTRODUCTIONWith the increasing demand for zinc and decreasing of zinc resources, people pay more attention on development and utilization of zinc oxide ore. However, zinc oxide ore has wide range mineral kinds, complex mineral composition, disseminated fine-grained particle size, and high content soluble salt, so current study results about the zinc oxide ore with conventional flotation are not satisfactory. So far, process dealing with zinc oxide ore includes: sulfuration (Na2S)-flotation, direct flotation with fatty acids collectors, metallurgical methods, in which sulfuration flotation is the most widely used method. The basic principle of sulfuration flotation method is firstly roasting oxide ore with vulcanizing agent, and then recovering the sulfurated oxide ore with flotation, which is similar with recovering nature sulfide ore by using conventional collectors such as amines and xanthate."

"Each and every flotation plant must produce daily/weekly/monthly production reports in which metal balances for payable and penalising elements are presented. Several factors including ore heterogeneity and harsh production environment affect the reproducibility of the reported data. Best practices of metal accounting thus prescribe that production reports be accompanied by measurement quality reports quantifying the reproducibility (a data quality metric often expressed as a relative standard deviation) of each data reported. Ignoring the irreproducibility of measurements may lead to the perception that random errors have been totally eliminated through statistical data reconciliation, which is wrong. This paper aims at explaining the full lifecycle management of reproducibility estimation from the outset at the measurement process to its reporting after having been through the statistical data reconciliation process. Indeed, the reproducibility of reported data can be obtained by performing a sensitivity analysis. Necessary conditions for obtaining a truly representative assessment of measurement reproducibility are stated. Typical levels of measurement reproducibility found in operating flotation plants are also reported. These numbers can be used as benchmarks for reproducibility levels that can be realistically expected.IntroductionEach and every flotation plant must produce daily/weekly/monthly production reports in which metal balances for payable and penalising elements are presented. Such production reports are the most expected output from a metal accounting system (MAS). The duly recurrence of this task combined with an insufficient level of automation has somehow contributed to the misleading perception that it is mainly a clerical work. "Coniaurum Mines, Limited, hold nineteen claims in Tisdale township, in the Porcupine district, adjoining the McIntyre mine on the east. They extend for over a mile along the strike of the Hollinger-McIntyre 'break'. The property has been explored extensively along the ore zone both laterally and vertically. Workings have been carried to a depth of 5,500 feet, and nearly 50 miles of lateral workings (drifting and cross-cutting) have been driven to date in development and in gaining access to the orebodies.Production started at the Coniaurum in June 1928 and has continued without interruption. No one can properly work without sufficient light and this is especially so in mines where conditions are difficult. Artificial lighting is very important for the night shift to provide a safe and efficient working environment, which must be evenly illuminated with no obvious dark spaces and a minimum amount of glare. During an illumination survey of a large mechanized surface mine, it was found that the illumination level varied and was not uniform throughout the length of the road; it was high at one side of the road instead of at the centre. There were also different combinations of lamps, with angles of light arm varying from 35º to 70º. In this respect, an experimental study was carried out with a fabricated telescopic light pole to uncover the optimum design parameters of lighting installations. The analysis was done by plotting isolux contours for fixed installations and drawing graphs for various combinations of luminaries, reflectors, light arm angles, and height of lanterns by plotting the horizontal angle of the light arm along the abscissa, and the contour area along the ordinate. The study revealed that the design parameters of the lantern are mainly dependent on the type of luminaires. It was revealed that the pot reflector with a combination of tubular bulbs produces a wide distribution of light, and contributes towards a reduction of luminaries when installed in longer roads.

The recovery of sulfur dioxide from metallurgical gases for the production of sulfuric acid has been the primary means of reducing sulfur dioxide emissions from nonferrous smelters. Sulfuric acid has been produced from gas originating from fluid bed roasters, electric furnaces, reverberatory furnaces, flash smelting furnaces, Pierce Smith and flash converters, sinter machines, etc. The gas from each of these sources has a unique set of variables that affect the design and operation of the sulfuric acid plant. In addition, the sulfuric acid plant itself has been evolving, with new equipment designs and materials. This paper will review each of the unit operations in the gas cleaning and contact sections of the metallurgical sulfuric acid plant, discussing various equipment designs, materials and the handling of gas stream variables and impurities. The paper updates to 2007 previous works on metallurgical sulfuric acid plants by the authors, and analyzes new equipment and systems, including: FRP or alloy quench systems, alloy converters, towers and pump tanks, heat recovery systems, high efficiency mist eliminators, tower packing, etc.

As OEM sensors and interfaces have grown in number, the available data from equipment in the mining environment has continued to multiply. This equates to an increased visibility of operating performance, mechanical and electrical health, and predictive monitoring that can directly improve maintenance reliability and scheduling. With increased visibility, where should a reliability engineer begin to look to directly impact Capacity Assurance? More specifically, what source will provide inputs to the Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA)? Results from these analyses must be documented, and they must contribute to the overall mission of the mining company; these results must reduce costs and increase profits. "Pressure leaching and pressure oxidation in autoclaves are important alternatives in the extractive processing of gold, copper and nickel ores. The application of advanced control to pressure leach and pressure oxidation autoclaves could achieve significant benefits as has been shown in alumina pressure leaching. This paper compares and contrasts alumina digestion autoclaves to other mining autoclaves with respect to advanced controls. The application of advanced control in alumina with over 30 units controlled worldwide, and its benefits will be reviewed. The design and potential benefits from advanced control for pressure oxidation and leaching will be presented.INTRODUCTIONIt is this author's position and the purpose of this paper to propose that advanced control could be effectively applied to autoclaves in the nickel, gold, and copper mining processes. This is based on the proven effectiveness of advanced control on autoclaves used in the alumina industry for pressure leaching of bauxite ores. Incremental, but significant increases in production could be realized by applying advanced control to autoclaves, as evidenced by the alumina industry, and this not being implemented in other autoclaves in the mining industry.In addition, today the mining industry is being challenged to improve their production methods. In some markets like nickel, there is pressure to improve productivity and reduce the cash cost per ton. While in other markets like copper and gold, demand is vigorous with favourable pricing, and there are advantages to increase production and productivity given limited plant capacity. Advanced control has proven its capability to improve mineral processing operations through increases in throughput, recovery, as well as reducing variability. In today's mines, autoclaves are being used to a much larger scale and with much larger importance, thus it would be beneficial to improve operational performance through the use of advanced control.Accordingly, it is the author supposition that an opportunity exists in the mining industry to use a proven advanced control technology to improve the operations and financial performance of mines using autoclaves."

"Bending is involved in the forming of many sheet parts and it is important to understand the phenomena involved. In this paper the basic equations describing bending on a global scale are compared with strain measurements of bent sheet. The development of strain on a local, microstructural scale is also investigated, as is the general aspects of plasticity and the failure process. It is shown that the global equations can be used to estimate the strains involved and the local strains can be attributed to various aspects of the plasticity. The bendability can be related to the fracture strain of the sheet and the ability of a sheet alloy to accommodate the necessary bending to form the part can be assessed.INTRODUCTION The ability of a sheet alloy to undergo bending without failure is an important capability in the forming of many parts and it is useful to be able to assess the bendability of an alloy during its development. The basic mechanics of bending were developed in the 1950s (Lubhan & Sachs, 1950; Hoffman & Sachs, 1953). When a sheet is bent the upper bend surface is in tension, the lower surface in compression and at some point within the sheet there is a plane of zero strain which is referred to as the neutral axis. For sheet exhibiting limited plasticity the neutral axis is static and occurs at the mid-point of the sheet thickness but for sheet exhibiting extensive plasticity the neutral axis progresses deeper in to the sheet as bending progresses. This results in two expressions for the maximum strain at the upper bend surface depending on the motion of the neutral axis. For Al alloys such as AA6111, AA6016 and the like extensive plasticity occurs and the neutral axis is expected to move during bending. However, very few studies have examined how the neutral axis motion and the strains develop, compared with the mechanics analysis. Geist and Parker (1984) used hardness measurements to investigate neutral axis motion but these experiments did not have the resolution necessary to compare the results with experiment but did indicate neutral axis motion. To understand the nature of plasticity and failure during bending it is important to know the extent of neutral axis motion, the scale of strain gradients developed through the sheet and the maximum strains occurring at the bend surface, finally comparing experimental results with the theoretical predictions. The influence of microstructure on the evolution of strain and failure can then be considered in the context of these parameters. "A process control computer has been installed in the Lake Dufault concentrator to: (a) control the on-stream X-ray analyzer and convert chart readings to elemental percentages, (b) calculate the flow rates required for the most important flotation reagents, using the amount of material entering the process, the analyses and the slurry pH, and (c) set the reagent feeder to these flow rates automatically. Although this project was largely experimental, to gain knowledge and experience in flotation process control, the objectives have been met and fully automatic computer control is now the normal mode of mill operation.This paper describes project planning and defines the system with respect to both control design and functional design. System operation -as seen by the mill operator -is detailed. Implementation of the system is described and the system is discussed in terms of its success, economic justification and future plans."
