Ventilation of underground workings consists of establishment of such control of air currents that the underground workers may work in safety, with maximum comfort and efficiency, mad without impairment of health; and that the mine openings may be made subject to such control of air flow as to remove from the workings at ordinary times harmful gases and dusts, and at time of emergency, such as fire or explosion, there may be maintained as much or as little air flow as may be desired covering portions of the mine or the mine in its entirety. Control of air flow is the keystone of any ventilating structure, and this very essential feature is obtainable only by the installation of mechanically operated fans, to ether with other ventilating devices such as doors, overcasts, regulators, etc. Every mine, large or shall, coal or metal, should from the outset be equipped with a fan. While much has been written about natural ventilation and many claims have been made that in specific mines there is sufficient natural al" flow, there are few if any mines, coal or metal, where natural ventilation supplies anything like adequately safe or healthful conditions for underground workers even at ordinary times; and at a time of mine fire or explosion the mines depending upon natural ventilation are practically helpless, and certainly are decidedly dangerous to those unfortunates forced to be in them.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in partnership with Strata Products tested the sealing capability of Ventstop®? as part of an ongoing mine fire control and suppression research program. Ventstop®? is a multi-purpose, inflatable device that is produced by Minvent Solutions and is available world wide for use in the metal and nonmetal mining industry. Ventstop®? is also used in the Australian coal industry as a temporary ventilation control device. The device can be quickly deployed, is reusable and can be placed in horizontal and vertical mine voids to control dust, fumes and smoke. Deployment, multi-day inflation and air leakage tests were conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory to determine the capability and limitations of Ventstop®? in a simulated coal mine setting. During the tests, Ventstop®? was also subjected to low level forces of a nearby methane gas ignition. It is thought that Ventstop®? could be used by the US coal mining industry to temporarily close an underground mine area in response to a fire or spontaneous combustion heating event, to temporarily redirect mine ventilation during longwall equipment moves or during stopping construction. This paper describes this inflatable temporary mine sealing technology and presents the results of the NIOSH tests. Brown and Yant6/ recently described a microprojection method for determining the particle-size distribution and number concentration of samples of dust collected from the air by such samplers as the Owens jet dust counter7/ and the thermal precipitator8/. This method was developed to obviate or reduce the eyestrain consequent to the regular filar-micrometer method9/ and to save time and work. The article stated that work was in progress on a microprojection method for courting impinger dust samples; this article describes the method developed. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The assistance of the personnel of the Ventilation Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., Butte, Mont., in developing this method and particularly in suggesting a suitable material to use for the microprojector screen is sincerely appreciated. Much of the work was done in the laboratory of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. on samples collected in Butte mines during a cooperative study with this Bureau.

As part of the important program of promoting conservation and efficient utilization of petroleum, Bureau of Mines engineers are making studies of secondary oil-recovery projects throughout the United states and publishing reports setting forth the pertinent facts so that others may profit by the experience gained. This report presents the results of a study by engineers of the Bureau of Mines, stationed at Franklin, Pa., of secondary oil recovery in a part of the Cabin Creek field, Kanawha and Boone Counties, W. Va., where natural gas is injected into the reservoir to stimulate oil production. Most oil produced in the Appalachian region at present is obtained from stripper fields in which almost all natural energy has been dissipated. Secondary-recovery methods are used extensively in many oil-producing areas of New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky for recovering oil not produced by primary-production methods. The part of the Cabin Creek field reported in this study is shown in figure 1 and has been designated by the operator as project 4. In 1944 the developed area of the entire field was approximately 4,200 acres, and the area of project 4 was about 600 acres. In the developed area of the project the oil reservoir is in the Berea sandstone and occurs at 2,914 to 3,410 feet.

The Bureau of Mines and the University of Illinois investigated surface characteristics and damage to structures from mine subsidence over a room-and-pillar coal mine in Hegeler, IL. Data on three adjacent subsidence sags and associated structural damage were collected, summarized and evaluated. The subsidence sags developed over a 10-year period and took place above a modified room-and-pillar operation mining the Herrin (No. 6) coal at a depth of 130 to 135 ft. Surface vertical displacements of 3.0 to 3.5 ft resulted from extracting 6.1 to 6.4 ft of coal. Ground movements associated with sag formation severely damaged three houses and a radio station building, broke numerous utility lines, and structurally distorted three radio transmission towers. The radio station was remodeled and the towers repaired, but the three houses were subsequently demolished. Surface waters collecting in the subsidence depressions caused failure of radial ground transmission systems. The following subsidence profile characteristics were determined at the radio station and one of the houses, respectively: profile slopes, 0.02 and 0.07; maximum curvatures, 2.3 x 10-4 ft-1 and 3.0 x 10-4 ft-1; and angular distortions, 6.6 x 10-3 and 62.0 x 10-3. Although the house was more severely damaged than the radio station, both structures are classified as severely to very severely damaged.

Significant amounts of cobalt, a strategic and critical metal, are present in readily accessible spent copper leach solutions. For example, recovery of cobalt at two major u.S. copper operations could produce about 1,300,000 lb Co annually, about 13 pct of domestic consumption. However, techniques such as solvent extraction and precipitation have not proven cost effective in separating and recovering the cobalt from these low-grade domestic sources. The Bureau of Mines has devised a procedure using a chelating ion-exchange resin to extract cobalt from a pH 3.0 copper leach solution containing 30 mg/L Co. Cyclic tests in 4-ft-high by 1-in-diam columns gave an average cobalt extraction of 95 pct when 65 bed volumes of solu-tion were processed at a flow rate of 4 gpm/ft2 of resin area. After an impurity scrub, eluates contained, in grams per liter, 0.4 Co, 0.2 Ni, <0.001 Cu, 1.3 Fe, 2.8 Zn, and 0.008 AI. Solvent extraction procedures to remove impurities, reject nickel, and concentrate cobalt produced a cobalt sulfate solution containing 80 g/L Co, 0.05 g/L Ni, and not more than 1 mg/L Cu, Fe, Zn, or AI. Based on data from commercial electro-winning operations, this solution appears suitable for production of metallic cobalt.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to quantify microphone response variations that could result when the microphone is worn by a worker, as with a personal noise dosimeter, and to suggest an optimum placement and orientation of the microphone for noise exposure measurements. Previous studies have shown no significant variations in a diffuse field. This investigation, therefore, was conducted in the free-field conditions of an anechoic chamber using an anthropometric dummy as a subject, and broad band noise as the acoustic stimulus. This investigation established that, in a free field, the wearer&apos;s body does significantly affect microphone response; the response variations are a function of azimuth, and location and orientation of the microphone. Results suggest that locating the microphone on top of the subject&apos;s shoulder, oriented parallel to the body axis, should yield data comparable to that obtained using a sound-level meter.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of the investigation of manganese mineral occurrences in continental United States, the Bureau of Mines has collected several lots of ore from properties in the vicinity of Long Valley, Ariz. The ore occurs as irregular and random pockets in a brecciated zone. As only high-grade portions of the deposits obtained by selective mining would be acceptable as commercial-grade manganese ores, an investigation was made to determine amenability of the ores to concentration by ore-dressing methods. Several types of ores, differing in grade and mineral associations, were studied.Ores from the Vaiazza property are of special interest, owing to the successful application of silica flotation for their concentration. Ores from the Shroup and Conner-Hough properties are very similar but differ somewhat in their response to ore-dressing Method's. In all instances, the man¬ganese minerals are psilomelane and pyrolusite, with minor amounts of other manganese oxides. The country rook is a brecciated limestone; the diluent in the high-grade ore pockets is chiefly silica. The low-grade manganese ores are limestone replacements, and the chief gangue material, of course, is limestone."

Previously existing heat-of-formation values for the oxides of vanadium were rudimentary. They were subject to uncertainties of 1 to 5 kilocalories per gram-atom of contained oxygen. This fact has been the only adverse influence on the accuracy of thermodynamic calculations involving these substances, as the requisite entropy and high-temperature heat-content data are known with reasonable accuracy. This report presents new heat-of-formation data for four oxides of vanadium (VO, V203, V02, and V205), obtained by combustion calorimetry. It is believed that the uncertainties have been reduced to 0.1 to 0.3 kilocalorie per gram-atom of contained oxygen. The new heat-of-formation data were combined with existing entropy and high-temperature heat-content values to obtain free energies of formation of the four oxides at temperatures up to 2,000° K.

A laboratory furnace was developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for use in studying the interrelationships among variables associated with skull melting and casting high-temperature metals. Although additional work is necessary to determine the extent to which the information obtained by using this furnace can be extrapolated to larger furnaces of the same type, many casting characteristics of metals and alloys can be determined on equipment of this size. This furnace is a laboratory-size, consumable-electrode, skull-casting furnace equipped with a water-cooled copper ladle. The ladle, which is a tilt-pour or over-the-lip type, has a volume of approximately 30 cubic inches and provides up to 20 cubic inches of molten metal for castings. Castings of various reactive and refractory metals, including zirconium, titanium, hafnium, columbium, molybdenum, tantalum, and tungsten, have been produced. In addition, castings of iron, chromium, and copper have been made. The simplicity and versatility of the apparatus would make it useful to metallurgical laboratories preparing cast specimens.

"The factors that determine the efficiency of reduction of iron oxides by gaseous reducing agents may be considered in two classes; those which effect the equilibrium between the reacting substances end their products, and those which affect the rete of reaction. Both sets are of prectical importance, the former as influencing the maximum possible efficiency and the latter as determining what fraction of the maximum yield may be readily or profitably obtained. In addition, the thermal changes attending the reduction greatly affect the chance of successful industrial application of any such process, and knowledge of them is necessary for the intelligent design of apparatus and control of the reaction. Some aspects of each of these three divisions of the problem are discussed below.I. The Maximum Reducing Power of Fuel Gases on the Oxides of IronsThe gases that heve been considered specifically in this work are coal gas, water gas and producer gas, typical analyses” of which are given in Table 1 Of the various hydrocarbons represented in Table 1, (several being grouped or averaged as C2R4), methane is the only gas assumed to be capable of existence at appreciable pressures under the conditions of interest here. During the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the Western United States, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected 2-ton samples from five manganese properties near Golconda, Nev. Extensive laboratory tests were made to determine the amenability of these ores to standard ore-dressing methods of concentration. The Tom Major property, one of those sampled, is situated 12-1/2 miles south of Golconda, Humboldt County, Nev. The deposit is described as a bed about 5 feet thick in a thinly bedded shale and dolomite formation. The sample tested was obtained from the manganese bed, but the examining engineer reported: "The mining of an appreciable tonnage at reasonable cost would perhaps cut in half the grade represented by the sample."

In 1988, at the request of the Bureau of land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the 13,460-acre Owyhee Breaks Wilderness Study Area (OR-003-059) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is in Malheur County, OR, about 27 miles northwest of Jordan Valley. No mineral resources were identified in the study area during this investigation. There is an occurrence of jasper along Birch Creek and an associated occurrence of zeolite in some tuffs. In the northern part of the study area is an occurrence of bentonitic clay containing less than 40,000 tons. Much of the area is covered by landslide blocks, colluvium, earthflow deposits, and talus, composed of Tertiary-age volcanic rocks. The upper plateaus are capped by Tertiary-age basalt.

"Freshly ground and aged anthracite and bituminous coal samples were investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to detect the presence, concentration and reactivity of free radicals. Freshly ground anthracite coal produced greater concentration of free radicals than the bituminous coal, and the radical reactivity was also greater for the anthracite. The reactivity of the newly produced free radicals in the anthracite dust correlated with the dust's toxicity. Furthermore similar coal-based free radicals were detected in the lung tissue of autopsied coal miners, suggestive of persistent reactivity by the embedded coal dust leading to the progressive disease process. Results of the studies on the severity of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) and free radical concentration m lung tissue support this hypothesis.INTRODUCTIONCOAL WORKERS' PNEUMOCONIOSIS (CWP) has been an important topic of concern to miners, mining engineers, epidemiologists and medical researchers for decades. It is well known that the prevalence and severity of CWP differ markedly between different regions and mines despite comparable exposures to respirable dust (REISNER and RoBOCK, 1977; HURLEY et al., 1979). These variations in pathogenicity of coal mine dusts can only partially be explained by differences in the mineral composition and by rank of coal (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al., 1980). Cytotoxity studies on mammalian cells do not correspond well with the human disease pattern (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al.,1980; VALL YA THAN et al., 1988). For example, while epidemiological studies of coal miners (REISNER and ROBECK, 1977; HURLEY et al., 1979) indicate that the prevalence of CWP correlates roughly with the rank of coal, such correlation has not yet been established in biological studies, despite considerable effort (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al., 1980). In order to help resolve this apparent paradox we have undertaken a systematic study to evaluate whether any correlation exists between the concentration of free radicals present in fresh or aged coal dusts from two well-characterized U.S. coals. This study was also prompted in part by observations reported in the literature that organic free radicals can be formed on the surface of freshly fractured coals (LEBEDEV et al., 1978; DULIBA and CLARKSON, 1984). In particular, ARTEMOV and REZNIK (1980) noted that the decay lifetimes and, hence, the reactivity of the organic free radicals formed on crushing Russian coals, .depended"

The 31,880-acre Battle Creek Wilderness Study Area (WSA) was evaluated for mineral resources by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1984. No mining district is in the area, nor were any mines or claims recorded or found. Oil and gas leases, or lease applications, covered about half the area in early 1984. No known exploration has occurred. The entire WSA is covered with thick volcanic flows. Faults in these volcanic rocks may have provided conduits for mineralizing solutions emanating from the basement rocks; however, no evidence of mineral deposits was detected from rock samples collected along the faults. Reconnaissance samples from sand and gravel deposits yielded gold at less than $0.02/yd3. The source of the gold is assumed to be intrusive rocks or the Challis Volcanics about 20 miles north of the study area near the headwaters of Battle Creek. No economic concentrations of minerals were found in the WSA. INTRODUCTION Mineral surveys of designated wilderness study areas (WSAs) 1/ are conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The USBM researches the mining and mineral exploration history and evaluates mines, prospects, and mineralized areas within or adjacent to WSAs. The USGS studies WSAs by regional geochemical and geophysical surveys and geological mapping. The USBM and the USGS investigations are summarized in a joint report used to help determine the suitability of WSAs for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this USBM study is to provide data for the President, Congress, BLM, and the general public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to help insure that the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at reasonable cost.

There is outlined below the essential facts brought out in an investigation into the causes for emulsion difficulties as experienced at many water gas plants . The investigation was conducted under a cooperative agreement between the University of Illinois Engineering Experiment Station , the Illinois State Geological Survey , and the U. S. Bureau of Mines . Funds of the Illinois Gas Association were used to defray a part of the costs . Active assistance was rendered by the Peoples Gas Light and Coke Company , of Chicago , who furnished a laboratory at Chicago for conducting the experiments , and loaned the services of Mr. E. A. Thiele to help with the laboratory work . A full report on the results of this work will be published by the Bureau of Mines later but it is believed desirable to bring the principal results now to the attention of the industry . In almost every gas plant where carbureted water gas is made , some difficulty is experienced , at one time or another , in separating the tar fran the water that condenses from the gas . The fact that annoyance from this source is ever present in some plants , and seldom present in others , leads to the belief that certain operating variables have considerable to do with the formation of difficulty separable tarwater emulsions . Accordingly , when samples of tar were collected for laboratory study , the operating conditions and methods were simultaneously observed and recorded.

"Tetrandrine is a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid which has been shown to exhibit antifibrotic activity against silicosis. Tetrandrine is characterized by its strong binding to alveolar macrophages and inhibition of particle-induced respiratory burst activity in these phagocytes. In contrast, tubocurine and tubocurarine are structurally similar to tetrandrine but exhibit little effect on fibrosis or activation of alveolar macrophages. The objective of the present study was to test the effect of tetrandrine on macrophage production of monokines in response to occupational dusts, and to determine tetrandrine's effect on monokine-medicated cell growth using a mouse thymocyte proliferation assay and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as a positive control. Stimulation of alveolar macrophages by respirable silica dust resulted in a release of monokines which caused a fourfold increase in thymocyte proliferation. Coal dust, on the other hand, had no effect on macrophage production of this cytokine. Tetrandrine was found to exhibit a dose-dependent inhibition of monokine release from both silica and LPS-stimulated alveolar macrophages. In experiments where thymocytes were directly treated with tetrandrine, a dose-dependent inhibition of thymocyte proliferation was noted with both interleukin-1- (IL-1) specific and nonspecific mitogenic (concanavalin A) actions. In contrast to the inhibitory potency of tetrandrine, tubocurarine was found to have no effect on either the production of monokines by LPS-stimulated alveolar macrophages or IL-I-mediated thymocyte proliferation. These results provide a correlation between the ant:fibrotic effect of tetrandrine and inhibition of macrophage activation. INTRODUCTIONThe pathogenesis of chronic pulmonary fibrosis caused by inhalation of occupational dusts has been associated with abnormal activation of alveolar macrophages such as the release of various cytokines capable of inducing fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis. These macrophage-derived cytokines include interleukin-1 (IL-1), tumor necrosis factor (TNF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-B (TGF-(B), macrophage derived growth factor (MDGF), and interferon [1, 2].Interleukin-1 is a major macrophage-derived cytokine that has been shown to exhibit multiple biological effects on a variety of target cells. It is known to cause leukocyte [3, 4] and endothelial cell activation [5, 6], and to affect the synthesis and maintenance of the extracellular matrix by stimulation of fibroblast proliferation [7-9], synthesis of collagens [10] and gluco-saminoglycans [11], and prostaglandin E2 production [12]. In addition, IL-1 plays an important role in the initiation of an immune response through its direct activation of lymphocytes and stimulation of the production of other cytokines, such as interferons and hemopoietic colony-stimulating factors, needed for the expression of an immune response [13]. As a major cytokine in the immune-inflammatory sequela, IL-1 is also produced by epidermal, epithelial, lymphoid, and vascular tissues after infection, injury, or antigenic challenge [14]. Agents such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS), phorbol myristate acetate (PMA), immune complexes, and particulates are known to activate the synthesis and release of IL-1 by monocytes and macrophages [15]. These substances also trigger intracellular signals leading to altered arachidonic acid metabolism. Although the mechanism is still not clear, prostaglandins have been shown to suppress IL-1 translation via the induction of cyclic adenosine-monophosphate (CAMP), whereas leukotrienes produce a positive signal for IL-1 production [13]."

Thermodynamic calculations pertaining to the minerals gibbsite, kaolinite, halloysite, and dickite have been hampered by the lack of adequate heat and free energy of formation data. Previous data for gibbsite were highly uncertain, and there were no data for the other three substances. By use of hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry, the Bureau of Mines derived heat of formation values from the elements and from the oxides for the four substances, and the data were combined with known entropy values to obtain the corresponding free energies of formation. The results show that gibbsite and halloysite are thermodynamically unstable with respect to the oxides (a- alumina, a- quartz, and liquid water) at 298.15° K,, while kaolinite and dickite are only moderately stable (to about the same degree), The instability of halloysite, in comparison with kaolinite and dickite, results in a 60°-lower equilibrium decomposition temperature.

In the fall of 1953 the Philippine Bureau of Mines, under a Foreign Operations Administration Technical Assistance (FOA-TA) program, began a systematic investigation of the nickel content of the well-known Surigao laterite areas, on the island of Nonoc northeast of Mindanao, to determine the occurrence, distribution, and grade of nickel contained in the laterite and in the subjacent serpentine. At the same time, a technical review of the possibility of producing commercial ferronickel from the nickeliferous materials in the Philippine Islands was made, and a smelting process was suggested. The proposed process would be similar to that developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for the reduction of the nickeliferous serpentine occurring in the Nickel Mountain ?deposit at Riddle, Oreg. The potential avail-ability of electric power from the Maria Cristina facilities at 3 mils per kw.-hr. would enhance the economic possibility of this program. Development of an economically feasible process for recovering nickel from the nickeliferous serpentines and laterites should lead to the establishment of a new industry in the Philippines, to the development of a source of nickel in the Far East, of which at present there is none, and to partial solution of the problem of supplying the free world with nickel. Enough preliminary reconnaissance had been completed by early 1954 to permit sampling of the deposit for metallurgical investigations. The FOA then requested the Federal Bureau of Mines Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg., to conduct preliminary electric smelting studies on nickeliferous serpentine and laterite samples.
