Many changes in equipment have had to be made to handle the flotation products at the blast furnace, and these changes have meant an expenditure of considerable money, which has not been compensated by an increase in smelting tonnage. To date, very few new lead mines have been developed, so that the help derived by the innovation of flotation has been directed to old producing properties, where the ratio of concentration is greater now than when gravity concentration was in effect. In some smelting plants there has been an abandonment of complete units due to the introduction of flotation. Flotation Products Difficult to Handle The physical characteristics of the flotation product do not make for economic handling for lead blast-furnace work, either mechanically or metallurgically. The millman or miner do not know what trials and tribulations they have passed on to the smelterman. To the smelterman it is "the everchanging flotation," for little does he know what new reagent will be perfected tomorrow that may completely change the grade and physical characteristics of the product. Even the mining companies who have complete units of mining, milling and smelting have had a hard time to reconcile themselves to the fact that the unit cost per ton of ore smelted must go up with the increase of flotation product on the blast-furnace charge. The "smelterman's burden," for that is what flotation has been for the last few years, has not caused the smelter operator to lag or fall down, but has spurred him on with new zeal. The physical properties of the flotation products are as follows: (1) High moisture content; (2) mucky nature of product; (3) fineness of product, and (4) high metal content. New Mechanical Devices for Handling Furnace Product These characteristics have caused the use of many new mechanical devices in smelting practice, for example: New transportation equipment, such as solid-bottom cars, is required; unloading equipment and sampling

Work was undertaken two years ago at the Hammond Laboratory for the purpose of determining the magnitude of the elastic range in single crystals of pure metals by means of creep tests, the assumption being made that if a true elastic range exists, the elastic limit represents the maximum stress for no creep. A sensitive extensometer was constructed, and creep tests were made on zinc single crystals at a variety of loads and temperatures1. It was soon discovered that there is no measurable elastic limit in ductile zinc single crystals at, or above, room temperature. The inference that pure metallic single crystals may not possess a definite elastic range was not justified, however, since zinc had been tested in creep only above its recrystallization temperature, and several investigator2,3,4 had already shown that above the recrystallization temperature polycrystalline metals will flow under very small stresses, while below that temperature stresses of a much larger magnitude are required. For that reason, it was decided to extend the study of the elastic limit to other metals having a higher recrystallization temperature than zinc. Aluminum and silver were selected, because of the ease of obtaining pure materials and of preparing large single crystals, and because the crystallo-graphic glide system of these metals is well known. Owing to the limited time available, the elastic range was investigated by slow tensile tests rather than by creep tests. The New Cornelia Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation is at Ajo, Pima County, Ariz. It is at the southern terminus of the Tucson, Cornelia and Gila Bend Railroad, which connects with the Southern Pacific Railroad at Gila Bend, Ariz., approximately 43 miles to the north. History Early history of the Ajo district has been related by A. W. Allen1 and by T. A. Rickard.2 Briefly, steps looking to the large-scale development of the ore body were instituted as early as 1912. This work culminated in the equipment of the property for open-pit mining by steam shovels. Ores initially mined carried economic amounts of copper carbonates as the principal copper-bearing mineral. Treatment methods developed for the extraction of the copper content involved leaching and a 5000-ton leaching plant was constructed and placed in operation in early 1917. Description of methods and equipment employed in this plant has been given by A. A. Tobelmann and James A. Potter.3 As exhaustion of the carbonate ore body neared, and mining operations exposed an adequate tonnage of sulphide ores, a 5000-ton concentrator was constructed for their treatment. That plant has been described by H. Kenyon Burch.4 Construction was completed and the plant was placed in operation in early 1924. Changes made in the original plant to improve practices and increase production will be the subject of subsequent paragraphs of this paper. The second order, {1011}-{1012} twin bands observed in critically deformed magnesium are often accompanied by an unusual form of kinking. These kinks, which lie adjacent to and run more or less parallel to the twin band habit, allow plastic deformation that occurs inside the twins to be accommodated into the matrix. The bend planes of these kinks cannot be explained using slip dislocations with Burgers vectors lying in the basal plane. A mechanism involving a single set of {1012)(1011) dislocations is proposed to account for the kink band habit, in good agreement with the experimental observations. It has been shown that second order, {101l)-{1012} twinning is an important phenomenon for magnesium deformed in the ambient temperature range. A detailed study of these twins has recently led to a better understanding of their irrational habit plane1 and their relation to fracture in magnesium.' This paper is concerned with a third aspect of these twins; this being the kink bands, originally referred to as shear accommodation kinks,3'4 that are often induced in the adjacent matrix. A twin band and its shear accommodation kink usually appear as a single macroscopic deformation, as seen in Fig. 1. The complex nature of these deformed regions is easily revealed, however, with the aid of a suitable microscope. It has been proposed374 that the primary function of these kinks is to accommodate the nonhomogeneous deformation that normally occurs in the second order twins. The twins tend to form as small discrete lamellae lined up approximately one in front of the other.''' Very large plastic deformations varying in magnitude from one twin to the next, may occur inside these lamellae. The kinks serve both to pass this strain into the matrix and to accommodate strain variations between twins. Deformation within the kinks, subsequent to their formation, has also been observed;3,4 and it is thought that this contributes to the strain accommodation process. The bend planes of the kinks have a habit near that of the twin band itself, which lies about 56 deg from the matrix basal plane. This orientation does not bisect the angle formed between the basal plane to either side of the bend plane and therefore differs markedly from the kink structure usually observed in hcp metals.'-' The present paper reports the results of a study of shear accommodation kinks and proposes a possible solution to the problem of the orientation of the bend plane. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Rectangular cross-section tensile specimens with axes parallel to (1010) and faces to (1210) and (0001) were cut and acid machined from a high-purity magnesium single crystal. After straining on an Instron machine the specimens were examined by both optical and replica electron microscopy. The basic procedures have been previously reported."' EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Structure of Shear Accommodation Kinks. A typical, large (101l)-{1012) twin band with its associated shear accommodation kink is shown running diagonally from upper left to lower right in Fig. 1. In this optical micrograph the twin band, consisting of a row of small, highly deformed twin lamellae, is visible as a narrow dark band along the left hand edge of the structure in question. The kink lies to the right of the twins, is approximately three times as wide, and is lighter in contrast. The horizontal slip lines visible on the general specimen surface correspond to matrix basal slip and are parallel to the tensile axis. Note that on the right-hand side of the band these slip lines can be followed from the matrix into the kink. At the kink band boundary the slip lines suffer a clockwise rotation of about 25 deg. Rotations of this magnitude are not uncommon. When a surface such as that in Fig. 1 is given an etch1 making it sensitive to polarized light, it has been observed that the slip traces in the kink are parallel to the basal plane trace in this region. This is in excellent agreement with the assumption that these regions are indeed kinks. Fig. 2 is an electron micrograph of this same twin band and kink. REJUVENATED is an apt word to apply to Chino, Kennecott's big open-pit mine at Santa Rita, New Mexico. Back in 1923 Chino was merged with Ray by an exchange of shares, and in 1926 the Ray-Chino combination was taken over by Nevada Consolidated through an issue of bonds that were traded for the Ray and Chino assets. Subsequently, of course, the whole package was acquired by the Kennecott Copper Corporation. On the basis of the terms of the Ray-Chino-Nevada exchanges, Chino was rated third in value, something less than thirty per cent of the total. In 1955 the appraisal would doubtless be forty per cent or more. But it is not only vis-a-vis Ray and Nevada that Chino has blossomed out. At the end of 1931, Chino ranked seventh among the Porphyries in point of output; whereas by the end of 1954 it was fifth,. having passed both Inspiration and Nevada Consolidated. Sharp curtailment in production in 1932-33-34 and total suspension in the two years following (see Fig. 21) found the property in a somewhat parlous position. However, the engineers had not been idle; they had been planning for the future, and in 1937 a far-reaching program of rejuvenation was launched. During the ensuing five years, capital expenditures totaled more than $8,500,000. Among the projects undertaken were the following: (1) Mine-Purchase of larger and better equipment for drilling, loading, and transporting the ore. (2) Mine-Beginning of the first systematic project to leach and recover copper in the waste dumps at the mine.

Aqueous solutions of Na2Cr04 are reduced with CO to produce hydrous Cr2O3 and NaHCO3/Na2CO3. CH3OH, HCOO- and HCHO in the presence of CO2 also reduce Cr(VI) and yield similar products. It is shown that the rate of Cr(VI) reduction can be represented by the expression -d [Cr(VI) ]/dt = k[Cr(VI)]0.5[R], where [R] is the aqueous phase concentration of CH3OH, HCOO- or CO. With these three reductants, the activation energies for the reduction processes are comparable and are of the order of 100 kJ/mol (43,000 Btu per lb mol). Rapid reduction rates are attained at temperatures in excess of 220°C (428°F). With these three reductants, a green acid-insoluble readily filterable hydrous Cr203, is formed. With HCHO, significant reduction of Cr(VI) occurs at about 80° to 100° C (176° to 212° F). The product is an acid-soluble violet modification of hydrous Cr203. Solutions of Na2CrO4 contaminated with Mo(VI) and W(VI) can be reduced to yield a Cr2O3 product with significantly reduced contaminant levels.

INTRODUCTION The purposes of this conference are aimed mainly at the treatment of fine or ultra fine particles in terms of beneficiation and chemical processing of minerals. For this reason the discussion on leaching will be confined to processes which treat slurries rather than those which treat a large variety of low and medium grade materials by vat leaching or dump leaching techniques. This eliminates such hydro-metallurgical systems as solution mining from consideration. This discussion will focus predominantly upon the behavior of fine particles as associated with their chemistry in leach reactors. Four major sub-headings may be pointed to as encompassing the major areas in which research and engineering design activity should be directed. These are: 1) generation of fine particles, 2) heterogeneous kinetics of leaching, 3) solution chemistry, 4) engineering design and control of flow reactors. Each of these topics will be addressed briefly in this presentation to illustrate current developments and future needs. GENERATION OF FINE PARTICLES As will be pointed out more quantitatively in the next section the generation of fine particles has great influence upon leaching systems inasmuch as in most cases the rate of leaching is related to the surface area of the particles involved. This is true for acid or base leaching of oxide minerals as well as a large variety of sulfides which have been considered in commercial processes and which have in the case of copper received increased attention during the past decade. Mean particle sizes of slurries vary broadly depending upon the type of grinding equipment being used. Pollution problems from smelters may be unique in industry since the pollutants cover the wide range of SOx, particulates, carcinogens (arsenic), plus a number of heavy metals, the health implications of which are not clearly understood. In addition to this wide range of pollutants, many of the plants are extremely old; and fugitive emissions may, in fact, be the most significant air pollution problem. The Environmental Protection Agency, both in an in-house and contract effort, has assessed the quantity of pollutants emitted and evaluated the health impact. This paper will review the status of EPA's regulatory efforts in both new and existing smelters in light of these pollutant assessment studies.

In 1938, Kanter' revealed that the steady-state creep rate of low-carbon iron alloys could be correlated by an activation energy expression, where the activation energy for creep, Qc, was found equal to about 90.0 kcal per mole for most of the alloys investigated. He suggested that creep at high temperatures might be controlled by some sort of solid self-diffusion process since the value of Qc was about equal to the known value for self-diffusion, Qd. Correlations were not further attempted along these lines until many years later, when new evidence2-8 was presented suggesting that Qc = Qd for many metals. This equality now appears to be established for ten metals (Al, Pb, Ni, Mg, Cd, In, a Fe, y Fe, Cu, and Au). This experimental fact prompted several investigators to postulate various mechanisms of dislocation motion which would yield an activation energy for creep equal to that for self-diffusion.7-9 Possibly the most accepted theory is that based on dislocation climb7 where a dislocation is envisioned to surmount a barrier by an atom-vacancy exchange process, thereby "climbing" from one slip plane to another. Such a model would suggest that the steady-state creep rate, i, should be directly proportional to the rate of self-diffusion, D, for a given creep stress. In order to more clearly reveal the relationship between creep and diffusion, and to eventually determine the correct model, it would be desirable to obtain data showing correlations between i and D, rather than with a comparison of the temperature coefficients, Q. It has been known for some time that the self-diffusivity of iron atoms is greatly decreased when body-centered-cubic (a) iron transforms to face-centered-cubic (y) iron. This has been ascribed to the more close-packed structure of y iron. The diffusivity ratio at the transition temperature is Da/Dy =350. Correlations of creep data for a and y iron5 reveal that the creep rates under a given stress at the transition temperature differ by about the same ratio (ea/ey 2 200). It would be difficult to reconcile these results on any other basis than that the diffusivity of atoms probably controls creep of iron in some very direct way. No other published data on other allotropic metals appear currently available for further checking such a possible correlation between i and D. Thallium transforms from a hexagonal close-packed (a) structure to a body-centered-cubic (ß) structure at 230°C (503°K) and the self-diffusivities of the two structures have been determined by shirn.10 His results are plotted in Fig. 1 where it will be noted that Dß/Da = 25 at the transition temperature. This paper describes the result of a series of experiments run in the laboratory of the School of Mines, Columbia University, during the winter of 1927-28. It shows that the several operating adjustments of a pneumatic table produce effects in the action of a given coal that may be grouped into two classes, viz.: stroke length, speed and rocker-arm angle, which affect longitudinal travel; air supply and table slope (transverse and longitudinal), which determine transverse travel. The magnitude of the effect of the different adjustments varies. Some of the adjustments affect stratification of the bed, both as respects size and specific gravity of the bed components, as well as direction of travel. Operation of a pneumatic table is fundamentally different from that of a wet table in that the former exerts, through the air supplied, a force on the particles upward away from the deck which is lacking on the wet table while, on the other hand, it lacks the positive control over cross travel that is supplied by the wash and feed water. Apparatus The pneumatic table used is shown in Fig. 1. Deck A is 20 by 12 in. and consists of nainsook supported on slats that register with the riffles. Fig. 2 is a photomicrograph of the nainsook used. It shows that the cotton threads average about 0.13 mm. dia. and the apertures about 0.17 mm. The deck carries 12 riffles consisting of wooden strips, 3/16 in. wide and 1/4 in. high, laid parallel to the feed side of the table. The riffles terminate along a line starting on the feed side at a point 11 in, from the mechanism end and running to the corner formed by the coal side and slate end. Taper starts from a line that runs parallel to their terminal line through the junction of the upper riffle with the mechanism end. The height at the terminal line is about 1/32 in. The deck with its supporting slats is carried on a framework consisting of rails A, sloping end rails B, and adjustable metal strips C, which latter permit variation in transverse slope. This frame is enclosed at the edges by means of heavy canvas, indicated in the sketch by wavy lines, which makes a flexible conduit between the deck and the stationary air chamber,

THE comprehensive study of the copper-manganese-zinc alloy system in the Bureau of Mines Laboratories has so far been principally concerned with alloys that lie within the alpha solid solution field of the system. Two regions, one centering about 65 per cent copper, 10 manganese and 25 zinc, and the other centering about 70 per cent copper, 20 manganese, 10 zinc, have been carefully examined.1,2 These have indicated that when the alloys are made with electrolytic manganese considerable amounts may be readily introduced and that the strength and hardness are increased without excessive losses in ductility. In the course of the work of establishing the limits of the alpha solid solution range,3 enough of certain of the alloys was prepared to permit determination of their physical properties at a future date. The 60 per cent copper alloys concerned here are part of that series. They cross through the alpha field and into the adjacent alpha plus beta and alpha plus X fields, and are of interest because they offer some information on the effects of manganese on alloys lying in these fields. COMPOSITION AND FABRICATION OF ALLOYS The chemical composition of the alloys involved is given in Table I. They were intended to contain 60 per cent copper with manganese increasing from 5 to 25 per cent in 5 per cent steps and zinc decreasing [ ] from 35 to 15 per cent. The analyses are so close to the intended composition that the alloys will be referred to hereafter by their nominal compositions. They were finished into sheet by cold-rolling and intermediate annealing procedures calculated to produce sheet 1/16 in. thick, cold-reduced by 20, 40, 60, and 80 per cent in thickness. Physical properties were determined on standard flat tensile specimens with 4-in. gauge length, although the test gauge section used was 2 in. The properties were obtained on cold-worked material and on material annealed at temperatures ranging from l00° to 1500°F. after 60 per cent cold reduction. Since an annealing temperature of 1200°F.

Raw bituminous coal has been in general use as a blast-furnace fuel in Scotland for the last century, and although its use has now been largely abandoned and it has been replaced by coke in the majority of the few furnaces which are at present in blast in this country, coal-smelted pig iron is not yet a thing of the past; it is still being produced and marketed in competition with the more cheaply smelted product of the coke-fired furnace. Various factors have influenced this change in practice; the once plentiful deposits of coal of a suitable nature for the blast furnace are now not so easily obtainable; native blackband and clayband ironstones which are easily smelted in the coal-fired blast furnace, although still far from being exhausted, are not available except at a cost that is somewhat higher than that of imported ores, making them unattractive to the ironmaster that is compelled by circumstances to smelt his iron at the lowest possible cost. Within the last 15 years overproduction of synthetic nitrogen has led to progressive reductions in the price of sulphate of ammonia, the recovery of which together with the other by-products before that time materially assisted in reducing the working costs of the coal-fired furnace. Now the sale of the by-products recovered yields a diminished profit. When the cost of the product is the only consideration the small, s1ow-smelting, coal-fired blast furnace cannot compare with its large, modern, coke-fired competitor. Other considerations do not by any means all support the same side of the argument. In the smelting of pig iron to be used in the manufacture of steel where the quality of the final product depends so largely upon the control of the conversion process and so much less upon the physical quality of the pig iron used, the physical properties of the pig iron do not exert any appreciable influence upon the quality of the steel produced, therefore the methods employed in the smelting of the pig iron matter but little so long as the requisite chemical composition is reached. Advances in the production of quality steel have emphasized the need for greater knowledge of the amount and distribution of oxygen in the steel. Control of inclusion content and quality is largely dependent on such knowledge. While many analytical methods have been devised for the accomplishment of this end, few are without serious limitations in accuracy, convenience, or skill required in application. Usually at least two methods are necessary to determine total oxygen and constituent oxides. Because of the great importance of this problem and the specific interest in the application of such methods of analysis, the various procedures were carefully reviewed at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, with the view of developing a method free from the limitations mentioned above. Intensive experimentation finally led to an improved iodine extraction analysis described by Cunningham and Price.1 After this had been thoroughly checked from the standpoint of the analytical chemist, it was rechecked from that of the metallurgist. This involved preparation of a number of small heats of varying composition with determination of total oxygen in the molten metal by the alumina method2 and an analysis of the solidified material without the aluminum addition by means of iodine extraction; the oxides of iron, manganese, silicon and aluminum also being determined by the iodine analysis. The report of this work constitutes the subject of this paper. The Iodine Method Fundamentally the iodine method is well established. It is based on the procedure first described by Eggertz3 and depends upon the fact that iron, manganese, silicon and aluminum, as well as the metallic constituents of the pertinent sulfides, carbides and nitrides of these metals

THE luncheon of the Milling Methods Committee in the Engineers' Club, on Feb. 16, was distinctly a social affair, although several matters of a non-milling nature were fruitfully discussed. The session* on Milling Methods, the same afternoon, attracted a gathering which overtaxed the capacity of the Board Room on the fifteenth floor. Galen H. Clevenger presided, with the moral reinforcement of Charles Butters. As all papers were available in printed form, and since synopses have appeared in MINING & METALLURGY, it is unnecessary to cover the contents of each in detail here. The first paper (T. P. 410), by Leaver and Woolf, on the "Flotation of Minor Gold in Large-scale Copper "Concentrators," was excellently summarized by R. S. Dean of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, who stressed the -very definite action of lime as a depressant of gold, and showed how the authors had worked out the best conditions of alkalinity, pH concentration and reagents for -optimum recovery of gold along with base metals, especially where lime had to be used to depress pyrite. No discussion was evoked.
