In 1880, mining operations were commenced at the Copper Queen mine. The famous Queen ore body, which extended to the surface, was first quarried from a large open cut in the outcrop. The ore body was followed down to the 300 level with the Queen incline, and stoped. This, we believe, marks the introduction of square setting in the Bisbee district, which is still the method most generally used. Orebodies The orebodies in the Copper Queen mine occur in the limestones, and the main portion of the ore has been mined from the Abrigo, Martin, and Escabrosa limestones. mile the orebodies outcrop in the extreme western end of the mine, the general dip is to the east and south, at an angle of about 20°, although this dip is not by any means regular, being, in fact, very irregular locally. The ore is remarkable for its variableness in character, some of it being very soft, requiring a large amount of timber, and other portions consisting of extremely hard sulphides. The orebodies, in general, while remarkable for their continuity, are very irregular, both as to shape and size. The mine having been in operation so many years, and mining having been prosecuted over such a large area, the operations have caused the shrinkage of the overburden, and there is a constant movement, which is shown by large cracks and interstices in the surface rocks, which largely contribute to the very high deadwork or maintenance cost of the mine. It is surprising that for year 1913 it cost almost $400,000 just for the one item of repairs and dead work in this property. Haulage and Hoisting The underground openings have been extended in the neighborhood of 200 miles. The ore hoisting is performed at a centrally located shaft, the Sacramento, to which all the ores from different parts of the mine are conveyed by electric haulage, of which there was slightly over 9 miles in operation in 1913. The hoisting levels at the Sacramento shaft are placed 200 ft. apart, commencing at the 400 level and continuing down to the 1,600 level, the average hoisting distance being 1,000 ft. The

This paper considers the many problems involved in estimating rates of technical change via productivity indexes. In mining, declining ore grades complicate the measurement of progress considerably. The estimates discussed in this article were made for the United States iron mining industry by means of two techniques: a simple model of production with two inputs, and multiple regression. The results can be used to explain the relation existing on U.S. iron ranges between rates of exhaustion, technical change, output per man and the increase in capital proportions observed since World War I. Similar ob-servations can be made on the mining sector trends in the United States, Canada, and Japan. Formidable problems confront the economist attempting to estimate the influence of technological changes on the progress of mineral industries. Peculiar to these industries is the problem of how to adjust any measure of technological progress for the offsetting influence of exhaustion. Exhaustion has long been recognized in the mining industry as a critical dimension. Empirically, it is usually treated as a problem of declining grades of ore either in production or in reserves. There are studies of the trends in mining industries attempting to relate changes in input requirements to changes in grade and technology over time. Most frequently, the measure used to indicate technological progress is average labor productivity, e.g., output per man-hour. However, although such an approach has the merit of being simple and direct, it ignores the influence of other important factors of production such as capital. Chlorination behaviors of pure iron and manganese oxides were investigated by combining a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) technique with batch-boat roasting followed by leaching. Ferrous and manganous oxides could be chlorinated readily, but, in the absence of a reductant, the higher oxides of both iron and manganese were dificult to chlorinate. Thermogravimetric analysis curves were drawn to illustrate the complexities of the reactions, and the possible mechanisms were discussed. Then three manganif-erous materials from the Cuyuna Range of Minnesota were treated by a process involving the selective chlorination of manganese followed by leaching. The results were interpreted in the light of the chlorination mechanisms observed on the pure iron and manganese oxides. One of the unsolved problems challenging Minnesota's mining industry is the development of an economic process to utilize the manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna Range. Although these ores constitute one of the major domestic reserves of manganese (estimated at 432 million tons'), their grade is too low for them to be mined solely for manganese. The nearly exclusive dependence of the U.S. steelmaking industry on foreign manganese ores has stimulated research over the years in treating the low-grade Cuyuna ores. As a result, a number of processes have been proposed.'-' Among these processes is chlorination. Chlorination is the high-temperature conversion of metallic oxides to chlorides by either chlorine or hydrogen chloride gas, or by solid chlorides of sodium, calcium, or magnesium. The metallic chlorides are then recovered by either vaporization or leaching. Although chlorination is an old art, it has become popular in recent years for the recovery of such new metals as titanium, zirconium, and niobium; for the removal of impurities like copper, lead, and zinc from pyrite cinder for ironmaking raw materials;' and for the segregation roasting of coppera and nickel' ores. The chlorination processes proposed for manganifer-ous iron ores have been relatively few (hydrogen chloride chloridization-leaching, hydrogen chloride and calcium chloride chloridization-volatilization,' and chlo-rination-selective condensation6), due presumably to the economics and to the corrosion problems involved. A survey and critical appraisal of published information about Young's modulus was originally made by the writer because of a complete lack of information about this very important quantity in works on. mechanics, physical metallurgy, physics, and other sciences. It was felt that a comprehensive summary of such information about Young's modulus might be of general interest and may suggest new problems or lines of attack on other problems that involve E. Hence this paper has been prepared even though it is only a review, with no new ideas or experimental data. The references are only those used in assembling the paper. No attempt was made to compile a complete bibliography on the subject of Young's modulus. CalculatioX oP YouNg's Modulus from Theoretical or Empirical CoNsidera-tions Many attempts have been made to compute E from theoretical considerations. The earliest calculations were probably those of Tomlenson (1883) and Souther-land (1891), but Fess'enden4',~ made extensive calculations a few years later and arrived at the relationship: £ = 78.TOw(i)* where V is the atomic volume. In 1923, Peczalski, working from the same standpoint but with more information available on atomic structure, arrived at an identical relationship, which he expressed as: where B is a constant of value about 8 . 107, p is density and mis atomic weight; the atomic volume, of course, being ml p. Portevind4 immediately pointcd out that while the equations of Fessenden and Peczalski were true of the common metals, they gave low values for the refractory metals with high moduli (Fig. I). He showed (Fig. 2) that much better concordance was obtained by means of an empirical equation of the form: F- KT" where K is a constant; T the absolute melting point; V, atomic volume, and a and b constants of value approximately I and 2 respectively. This constant K in the Portevin equation is not necessarily the same for all elements, as shown by Thompson. Other equations for E based upon theoretical considerations have been derived by Honda and Yamada49 and Lasareff.50 The most recent calculations of elastic moduli based upon quantum mechanics are probably those of Fuchs He extended the method of Wigner and Seitz for calculating the lattice energy and compressibility of monovalent metals and computed the elastic constants of lithium, 18

Preliminary experimental evidence seems to preclude the use of unlubricated mechanical force drills on the moon. Measured values of the coefficients of friction and adhesion between metallic and nonmetal-lic solids have been shown to increase in an ultra-high vacuum environment. The paucity of real knowledge of the influence of a hard lunar vacuum upon interacting solid surfaces, relegates current proposals to sample the moon with a mechanical force drill, to the equivalent of wildcatting on earth. Within a few years, drilling will be attempted on the lunar surface with tools that have been designed with parameters that are normally considered for most conventional terrestrial drills. Lunar drills must be light in weight, portable, have reasonable penetration rates, low manpower requirements, etc. Although the initial equipment cost is expected to be high, this will probably not be a critical factor. Early lunar drilling will be limited to shallow holes with depths of 10 ft or less. The primary function of these holes will be to furnish samples of lunar surface materials but they may also be utilized for other purposes, such as geophysical experiments. Instruments may be installed in them capable of measuring thermal diffusivity, gamma radiation, etc. As sampling will be the primary objective of the earliest holes, sample contamination is a parameter that effectively excludes such otherwise promising techniques as explosive or plasma jet drilling. The most desirable method is probably some form of mechanical force drilling that has the capability of operating in the extreme lunar thermal environment (125° to 37S°K), high vacuum (10- l3 torr range), and low gravity.

The effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and resultant notch-bar rupture life of ZNCONEL alloys X- 750 and 718 was studied. It was found that the primary effect of heat treatment in rendering these alloys notch-ductile is the elimination of any y' denuded zone adjacent to the pain boundaries. The mechanisms by which such a denuded zone can arise and be eliminated by heat treatment are discussed. InCONEL Ni-Cr alloy X-750 and INCONEL Ni-Cr alloy 718 are age-hardenable austenitic materials. Alloy X-750 is used for its corrosion and oxidation resistance and high creep-rupture strength up to 1500°F. Alloy 718 is used most effectively up to 1300°F. One of the most important areas in their development has been establishment of consistently good rupture properties, especially in the presence of a stress concentration, such as imposed by a notch. A desire to improve these properties has led to extensive studies of the effect of heat treatment on the micro structure of these alloys and their performance in stress-rupture tests. For a study of the bonding that occurs in magnetite pellets during oxidation, cubes of magnetite, hematite, and quartz were prepared, each with one surface polished and nearly optically plane. These faces were fired together under pressure and at various temperatures to determine whether bonding would occur. Sections of surfaces that bonded were examined microscopically. An attempt was made to measure the strength effected by this treatment. EARLIER work1,2 has shown that the strength developed by fired magnetite pellets containing silica or silicates is due to three separate effects. Two of these are associated with the formation of slag in the interior of each pellet at temperatures above 1000°C, where the atmosphere is substantially though temporarily neutral. The third is independent of the silica content and is responsible for the development of a hard shell around the pellet during the initial stages of firing, a condition which permits the pellet to assume the increasing load of the overlying burden and prevents extrusion of the slagged and semi-liquid interior. Pellets made from hematite concentrates do not show these effects unless specific additives are incorporated, and it is these differences in behavior which in large part account for the difficulty in producing satisfactory pellets from such concentrates. Elsewhere it has been stated that "the most important factor responsible for the development of strength in fired magnetite pellets containing no additive is the oxidation of magnetite to hematite and the subsequent recrystallization and grain growth of this constituent."' The object of the investigation reported in the present paper was to study in detail the mechanism described above and to evaluate its contribution to the strength of the fired pellet compared with other possible mechanisms, excluding slag bonding. This was effected by placing together polished faces of two cubes prepared from specific minerals and then heating them under constant pressure at different temperatures both in air and in nitrogen. The materials used were magnetite, hematite, and quartz. The magnetite was coarsely crystalline material from western Montana, the hematite was Itabira ore from Brazil, and the quartz was of optical grade but of unknown origin. A high-grade Lebanon (Pennsylvania) magnetite concentrate was used to prepare briquets for the investigation of bonding strength. Analyses of the iron oxide materials are given in Table I. The specimens for furnace treatment were prepared with a carborundum cut-off wheel, which cut the minerals into cubes approximating % in. along each edge. Care was taken to make the sides as parallel as possible. The edges of the faces to be polished were beveled, and the cubes were mounted in brass rings with sealing wax, this being essential to prevent the specimens from rocking during polishing. To prevent excessive friction, the wax was recessed so that only the brass ring and the face of each specimen would be in contact with the polishing lap. Each specimen was then ground with No. 600 carborundum to produce a level surface before polishing. The Graton-Vanderwilt process was not used for polishing because of the long time required by this method, but several other methods were tried. Cloth laps using levigated alumina or chromium oxide did not produce the desired polish. Satisfactory results were obtained by means of a pitch lap: which was used for all the mineral cubes, with levigated alumina as the polishing medium. The lap was operated in a machine similar to those used in the preparation of single optical surfaces. It was run at low speeds and moderate pressures, and polishing was stopped occasionally to prevent overheating of the lap. A good polish with flat surfaces could be obtained in about 5 min. After polishing the sealing wax was removed either in hot water or in a solvent such as turpentine.

Fuller’s earth is an inexact term applied to certain clays that have a marked ability to adsorb coloring materials from animal, vegetable, and mineral oils. Many clays have this adsorbing power to a slight or very limited degree, and certain other clays, chiefly bentonites, as well as minerals such as bauxite, can be made highly adsorbent by activation with acids or alkalies, but the term fuller's earth is generally reserved for clays that are naturally highly adsorptive. In most fuller's earths and practically all activable clays montmorillonite is a dominant mineral. No definite clay mineral or group is implied in the name fuller's earth, and the distinction between fuller's earth and other clays that have more or less bleaching power is not sharply drawn. The name as generally used has no genetic or mineralogical significance. The fuller's earth produced in the Florida-Georgia district contains the clay mineral attapulgite. This mineral name was first used in 1930 by DeLapparent to apply to a hydrous aluminum magnesium silicate found in the fuller's earth from Attapulgus, Ga., and Quincy, Fla. An essential component of its structure, determined by Bradley in 1940, is that the silica chains of the molecule are arranged similarly to those of the amphibole minerals. The fibrous nature of the lath-like crystals of attapulgite is apparent under magnifications reached by the electron microscope. The ideal formula, [(OH,), (OH), Mg, Si, 0,-4H,O], contains no aluminum, but there is considerable replacement of the magnesium by aluminum. In the classification of clay minerals, attapulgite is associated with sepiolite and polygorskite rather than with mont-morillonite.

THE data given herein were first included in a paper read before San Francisco Section, A.I.M.E., in October 1940, and are applicable to conditions existing until the gold-dredging industry was temporarily suspended by Order L-208 of the War Production Board in the fall of 1942. There is no doubt that gold dredging will be resumed at some future time, and on a scale equivalent to that of the recent past, but the cost data given herein will be affected to some extent by conditions existing at that time, and by labor rates and prices for materials then prevailing. DRAGLINE VS. BUCKET-LINE Dragline dredges should not be considered for mining large areas of low-grade placer gravel. In such deposits a dragline operator with a 5-cu. yd. dragline would be doing well to maintain an operating cost of 6¢ per cu. yd., while a bucket-line dredge with buckets no smaller than 7 cu. ft. each could be operated for less than 4¢ per cu. yd. By operating costs, I mean only field charges such as direct operating and overhead, which includes pay roll, power or fuel, repairs and maintenance, insurance, land clearing and general expenses, but not including such items as prospecting, depletion, depreciation of equipment, State Franchise Tax, or Federal Income Tax. It is not to be inferred that a dragline dredge cannot make a profit in small low-grade deposits, where the extent of a given property is too small to justify the use of the more costly bucket-line dredge. Consider small deposits of 10¢ gravel. It is obvious that a deposit of 5,000,000 cu. yd. of such gravel could not be mined profitably with a new, 7-cu. ft. bucket-line dredge, costing upward of $250,000, and with operation costs at 4¢ per cu. yd., paying for land or royalties out of earnings; nor could a new combination 5-cu. yd. dragline and washing plant, worth upward of $125,000 and working at 6¢ per cu. yd., make a profit. These comparisons are made because the hourly capacity of both types of dredges is nearly the same. The bucket-line dredge averages 93 per cent operating time in 24 hr., as against about 80 per cent or less for the dragline dredge. These percentages of operating time are important factors in making a comparison of this kind. The bucket-line dredge has greater efficiency in cleaning soft bedrock, usually characteristic of dredging deposits, and a 7-cu. ft. bucket-line dredge can be efficient to a total digging depth of 80 ft. (65 ft. below water, 15 ft. above). A 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge is limited to about 30 ft. of efficient digging depth, 5 ft. of which could be above water. In small areas of gravel not over 30 ft. deep, a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge could make a profit where a bucket-line dredge could not do so. As an example: compare the dredging of 3,000,000 cu. yd. of 10¢ gravel 28 ft. deep with bucket line, costing 4¢ per cu. yd., and with a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge operating at 6¢ per cu. yd. Because of small yardage, new equipment is not warranted, therefore we can assume that the dredges of both types are used equipment, fully depreciated. Dismantling, mov-

Morton Webb, Germiston, Transvaal, South Africa (communication to the Secretary*):—The experience of Mr. Boeh-mer in the Leadville district and his reputation as an engineer assure the interest of anything he may write on the ore-bodies of that district; and all engineers who have operated in Leadville will agree that the theory of the origin of the Leadville deposits, as given by Mr. Emmons in his famous monograph, does not adequately explain the genesis of all the deposits. The solutiou of the problem does not, however, appear to be quite so simple as Mr. Boehmer would make it; and the advance pamphlet issued by the U. S. Geological Survey, pending the completion of the main report, shows that there is still much ground for controversy. No doubt the later eruptive0 had a greater influence on the deposition of the ore-bodies than was thought at the time of the first investigation by the Survey; but it has always appeared to me that the influence exerted by these dikes mas more in the nature of a physical than a chemical one. The weight of evidence in recent years is mostly in the direction of ascension rather than lateral secretion; and one of the strongest evidences is the fact that most of the ore-bodies lie under one of the comparatively impervious layers which help to make up the structure of these hills.

A new method for determining rock drillability in diamond drilling is discussed; the method takes into consideration both penetration rate and bit wear. The method is based on drilling a rock specimen under controlled laboratory conditions using a model bit. The technique used for determining the experimental variables is extremely simple, quick, and reliable. Drillability is then determined by the mathematics of drilling. In considering the different factors that affect diamond drilling performance, the nature of the rock to be drilled is of outmost importance since it affects significantly the drilling costs and such other variables as bit type and design, drilling thrust, and bit rotary speed. Many attempts have been made to study this effect by correlating actual drilling performances either to certain physical properties of the rock being drilled1-? or to test drilling data obtained under laboratory conditions.7-13 These attempts were aimed at providing a reliable method of predicting by simple means the expected rock behavior in actual drilling, thus giving the engineer a tool to use in estimating drilling performances and costs in different types of rock. The purpose of this paper is to describe such a method by which rock drillability (a term used in the technical literature to describe rock behavior in drilling) could be determined in diamond drilling. It is believed that the proposed simple and reliable method will cover the need of the mining industry for a workable method of measuring the drillability of rocks. It should be emphasized, however, that since drill-ability depends on the physical properties of rock and each drilling process (diamond, percussive, rotary) is affected by different or partly different rock properties,14-l6 the proposed method of determining rock drillability cannot be extended to the other drilling processes. The results presented in this paper form part of an extensive three-year research program carried out by the author in the laboratories of the Greek Institute of Geology and Subsurface Research. During this period the effects of the physical properties of rocks and of such operational variables as drilling thrust and bit rotary speed in diamond drilling were investigated in detail. DRILLABILITY CONCEPT The literature is not devoid of drillability studies. While there are a number of investigators1,3,5-7,9-0,12-13,17 who have attempted to establish by direct methods (i.e., drilling tests under laboratory conditions) or indirect (i.e., through a physical property of rock) an index from which the drilling performance in a given rock may be estimated, very few6-7,9,12, of the proposed methods seem to be of much practical value to the diamond drilling engineer and none to date has been universally accepted. Commenting on the proposed methods for assessing rock drillability, Fish14 remarks that "for a measure of drillability to be accepted it is essential that penetration rate at a given thrust and bit life are elucidated as otherwise the method is of little value." This statement should be examined in more detail by making use of the penetration rate-drilling time diagram obtained in drilling a rock under constant operational conditions. Furthermore, the merits of using this diagram to describe rock drillability will be pointed out. At the same time reference will be made to this diagram when discussing some previously proposed methods. Fig. 1 illustrates such a diagram for three rocks,A, B, and C, which have been diamond drilled under identical conditions. It is assumed here that rocks A and B have the same initial penetration rate, i.e., VOA = Vog, but since rock B is more abrasive than A, rapid bit wear occurs and as a result the fall of its penetration rate with respect to time is more vigorous than in rock A. This is shown graphically by a steeper V = f(t) (0 curve in this rock than in rock A. Rock C has a lower initial penetration rate, due to higher strength properties16 but since it is not very abrasive, only a slight fall of its penetration rate occurs during drilling (in this category are some limestone and marbles with compressive strength above 1000 kg per sq cm). It follows from the foregoing considerations that the characteristic for each rock curve (I) is a function of (i), the penetration rate of the rock Vo recorded at the instant of commencing drilling, which determines the starting point of the curve (1) on the y-axis and (ii), the abrasive rock properties which determine the rate of fall of Vo with respect to time. Thus, curve (I) provides an actual picture of the rock behavior in drilling for given operational conditions, and it can be used with complete satisfaction to assess rock drillability. FOR many years gravitational classification has been employed as a basic tool in beneficiation of minerals and coal. While improvements have been made to increase efficiency and fields of application, the basic flow pattern has remained relatively unchanged in most gravitational classifiers. Feed slurry is introduced into a settling pool wherein the coarser solids settle against either an upward or horizontal fluid current, or a combination of both, and are withdrawn in a concentrated underflow stream. The finer solids below the classification point possess too low a settling velocity and thus are primarily swept out through a weir overflow by the bulk of the fluid. Because of its simplicity, efficiency, and low power and maintenance costs, gravitational classification finds a wide acceptance for separations in the range of 20 to 325 mesh. Two factors resulting from the basic flow pattern employed in gravitational classification present difficult problems for certain installations. If classification at 60 to 200 mesh of separation is desired, capacity in terms of gallons of overflow per minute per square foot of settling pool area must be low to allow required solids to settle to the underflow. If a thousand or more gal per min of feed slurry must be handled, either a very large classifier or a number of smaller units must be employed, taking up floor space and head room. Examples of this are the large classifiers, wetting tanks, or settling tanks used in the coal industry for recovery of process water from fine solids. Units as large as 50 or 60 ft in diam and 60 ft high, requiring substantial amounts of steel, are not uncommon. A second factor is the lack of self-regulation in gravitational classification. As overflow rate increases, mesh of separation increases correspond-ingly. This normally heightens difficulties of bene-ficiation. If a fine mesh of separation is required at varying feed rates, the problem is more than doubled in complexity. One of the primary advantages of gravitational classification is low power requirement. Gravity feeds or very low pressure heads are employed. However, fluid energy is still present in the inlet stream and provision must be made to dissipate it properly to obtain uniform upward or horizontal currents. Rather than waste this energy, it would be desirable to utilize it to secure a greater degree of self-regulation and simultaneously increase classification capacity per square foot of area. A free vortex could be realized by a tangential entry of feed, resulting in generation of centrifugal force to complement force of gravity in its action. With greater force it should be possible to gain finer separation at any overflow rate per square foot of settling pool area as compared with conventional gravitational classification. Furthermore, as feed rate increases, centrifugal force will also increase and at least partially offset faster currents sweeping solid particles to the overflow. A more stable classification point should result. The liquid-solid cyclone is the most common application of a free vortex in the beneficiation field.' Many previous papers have emphasized uniformity of flow pattern within the cyclone which is largely responsible for the sharp classification that can be obtained.'-4 If a free vortex can be maintained in a non-pressurized vessel with a free surface it may be possible to realize a third advantage of sharper classification. This open-top cyclone would then achieve a minimum energy loss comparable to that with conventional classifiers, and a mesh of separation coarser than 150 mesh, extending the range of application of the free vortex. This is not presently possible with ordinary cyclones. To test the applicability of the free vortex to gravitational classification, a 30-in. diameter open-top cyclone was constructed at Northwestern University. The cylindrical section was 30 in. high and the conical section included an angle of 60". The feed nozzle was a standard 4-in. pipe entering tan-gentially, with centerline 17 1/2 in. below the top of the cyclone. The conical section was flanged near

It is a striking fact in the domestic oil statistics of 1926 that with an increase in production of 13,000,000 bbl., there was nevertheless a lowering of both crude and gasoline stocks. It was the first reduction in the last eight years. In 1918, the last year of the war, stocks of crude and refined products were lowered 16,000,000 bbl., but in the following seven years stocks were increased 350,000,000 bbl., due largely to the phenomenal crop of major pools discovered in 1923. The big pools of that year coming as they did through some curious coincidence unprecedented in the oil industry, not only piled up a sudden increase of stocks at a time of large imports but they continued to add their quota to an increase of storage until 1926. With an increase in crude production, according to the Oil and Gas Journal, from 760,000,000 bbl. in 1925 to 773,000,000 bbl. in 1926, and an increase in cracking facilities of about 30 per cent., there was a draft on storage of 22,300,000 bbl. of crude and 1,000,000 bbl. of refined. Crude and refined changed from a stock surplus of 29,130,000 bbl. in 1925, to a deficit of 23,300,000 bbl. in 1926, or a differential total of 52,430,000 bbl. With a stock reserve of 541,700,000 bbl. of crude and refined oil in 1925, the amount drawn from storage was not large in percentage but it marked an important contrast with previous years. It meant a year of stability in prices and a sound condition in the industry. The indicated domestic demand increased from 695,120,000 in 1925 to 743,360,000 in 1926, (7 per cent.), 1 per cent. of which was due to California fires. Most of the gain in consumption was due to the increased demand for gasoline. There was little comparative change in the combined imports of crude and refined oil. There was an increase in exports of 17,200,000 bbl. (1.5 per cent). A petroleum balance sheet for 1926 and a comparativl sheet for the last two years, production in the United States by major districts and pools, and a list of imports are given in Tables 1 to 5, inclusive.

In contradistinction, comminution to 20-mesh or finer is called grinding. There is a twilight zone in which the product is 6, 10, or 14-mesh limiting size which is either crushing or grinding. ..." Since the data in this paper pertain to a rod-mill operation, comminuting a particular ore size of ¾ in. to a final stage, coarser than 20-mesh, the rod mill is designated as a "fine crusher machine" in this paper. The published literature discloses a wealth of data regarding a rod mill as a fine-grinding machine but relatively little as a fine-crushing operation. Typical of the latter operation is: (I) a description by F. J. Tuck2 in which a fine-crushing rod mill replaced crushing rolls and (2) a description by the present authors3 in which a fine-crushing rod mill was installed instead of a collventional fine-crushing machine. The experience of the authors is that a definite distinction must he made between the rod mill functioning as a fine crusher and as a fine-grinding machine. As a fine crushing machine it prepares relatively large amounts of ore for a subsequent fine grinding operation; as a grinding machine, it grinds relatively small amounts of ore to some predetermined finished product. Pulp Movement and Action in Mill In considering the work performed by a fine-crushing rod mill, it seems important to understand just what takes place within the mill. We were inspired to study this matter by a paper by E. W. Davis,4 which indicated that definite water classification of ore particles took place in a ball mill. However, in thinking of the rod-mill action from this point of view, we were confronted with the fact that our rod-mill discharge product showed no evidence of action by water classification. The Tennessee Copper Co. ore is relatively high in sulphides, and the gangue rock and the sulphides are of about the same hardness. In the presence of any action by classification, the coarser sizes are definitely very lean in sulphide minerals.

Our North American railway system, including the lines serving the United States, Canada and Mexico, with a total operating mileage of 303,040, employing 71,818 locomotives, represents not only the greatest industrial user of fuel coal, but in the variety of coals used, ranging from anthracite down through the several gradations of bitumirlous coals, as well as lignites, covers about all there is in American-mined coals. Necessarily the wide range of fuel coal embraces not only extremes of calorific value but also every possible gradation shown in size and preparation, from run of mine to washed nut and slack. Approximately 8 per cent. of the fuel used by the railroads is consumed in shop power plants, shop buildings, pumping stations, station buildings, etc. The principal class of coal (as designated) used by the railroads is bituminous, such, however, including a substantial tonnage of subbituminous and lignite coal; all United States railroads using in 1923 for locomotive, shop, station buildings and miscellaneous uses, a total of 4,578,000 tons of anthracite, 155,795,000 tons of bituminous, subbituminous and lignite coal and 58,005,000 bbl. (42 gal.) of fuel oil. The extraordinarily high rate of combustion developed in the modern locomotive, generating as high as 2500 b.hp., with limited facilities for cleaning fires en route, suggests the importance of a fuel supply containing a reasonably low percentage of ash-making material, and while the percentage of locomotive coal handled through automatic stokers is growing, the principal tonnage is yet fired by hand.

Two-dimensional analyses offer considerable promise in providing the basic information required to effect more precise control of petroleum reservoir performance. This paper describes a method for conducting some engineering analyses of this type using a high-qreed digital computer. The general approach is to (I) develop a representative numerical model of the reservoir and (2) employ a suitable numerical technique to solve the basic equation of flow and to develop the required engineering information for the particular case represented by the model. This technique has been used to calculate pattern performance in connection with several field projects involving water injection into oil reservoirs. This type of analysis involves sequentially (I) calculating the pres-' sure distribution in the reservoir and (2) tracking the progress of the interface between the displaced and displacing fluids in a step-wise manner to provide a depletion history of the operation. The particular analysis presented in this discussion is subject to the restriction that the mobility of the displaced and displacing fluids be equal and assumes that the fluids are incompressible and that gravity and capillary pressure do not affect the shape of the flood pattern. Complete two-dimensional .flexibility is maintained with regard to definition of reservoir rock and fluid characteristics, placement of physical restrains and boundary conditions, investigation of flow characteristics in the reservoir, and movement of the displaced and displacing fluid interface. The results of these studies indicate that the highspeed digital computer is well suited for conducting reservoir performance studies in two-space dimensions and that dependable numerical techniques are available for making such analyses. INTRODUCTION One of the problems facing petroleum engineers is that of providing more precise engineering control over reservoir operations at all stages during the depletion cycle. The most direct approach to this problem is to simulate the reservoir with some type of physical or mathematical model and use the information developed from the behavior of the prototype to predict the performance of the actual reservoir. This principle is, of course, not new, and a variety of simulation techniques have been developed to provide information on the behavior of oil and gas reservoirs. One straightforward refinement of present reservoir analysis techniques is the progress from one-dimensional reservoir models to those where the reservoir can be represented in two- and three-space dimensions. Multidimensional reservoir analyses are desired in order to show not only what is happening in the reservoir but in addition to show where in the reservoir the various phenomena of interest are occurring. Thus far, two-dimensional analyses have been confined predominantly to potentiometric and electrolytic model studies. However, when large numbers of wells are involved and where large-scale models are required, such problems become very tedious and instrumentation problems become acute." It is possible through use of numerical methods and general purpose digital computers to avoid many of the instrumentation difficulties and to relax some of the restrictions of previous techniques. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some recent experiences with the use of high-speed digital computers for predicting pattern performance in fluid injection operations and to describe the numerical procedures which have been used for making such analyses. THE NUMERICAL MODEL The problem of representing the reservoir with an appropriate numerical model is composed of at least two important considerations. The first requires that an adequate description of the reservoir mechanism be formulated in the form of the basic differential equation describing the process. The second consideration is definition of the physical characteristics of the reservoir. The latter requires that representative basic data be obtained, examined, and interpreted to provide sufficient detailed definition of the pertinent physical properties throughout the system. The Differential Equation One of the basic assumptions made for the purpose of performing the two-dimensional studies being dis-
