THE Nicola Valley coal-field is small, but it seems likely to become important because of its commanding position in a rich region that is developing rapidly. Bituminous coking coal in workable quantity has not been found at any other point between the Crow's Nest Pass region, about 400 miles to the east, and Vancouver island, 250 miles westward. The Canadian Pacific railway reached the Nicola valley two years ago; two other lines, the Canadian Northern and the Great Northern, are building towards the valley. The vast region between the Rocky mountains and the Pacific coast, extending northward for several hundred miles from the international boundary, which has been the scene of extensive mining- and smelting-operations for many years, is filling up with settlers, who are attracted by the wealth of minerals and timber, the rich soil of the valleys, and the fine climate. The Nicola river, flowing westward through the valley of that name in the Yale district, discharges into the Thompson river, which is the eastern branch of the Fraser. The transcontinental line of the Canadian Pacific railway crosses the mouth of the Nicola river at Spence's bridge, 178 miles from Vancouver. From Spence's bridge the Nicola branch line ascends the valley for 40 miles to Merritt, the coal-center, and continues 7 miles farther to the town of Nicola. Thus the haul from the mines at an elevation of 2,000 ft, to saltwater is 218 miles down river grades. The Nicola branch will be continued about 150 miles farther eastward to Penticton, where it will connect with an extension of the line through the rich Kootenay and Boundary districts. ALTHOUGH everybody is familiar with coal, few persons have an exact idea of, the great impor-tance of this precious fuel. Coal is the black bread of industry. Without it, industrial activity is much restrained; and so the great industrial countries of Europe and the United States of America are the great producers of coal. The 1913 production of coal in Belgium was 22,842,-000 tons, valued at 418,700,000 fr., nearly a half billion. In 1919, it was 18,483,000 tons, about 81 per cent. of the production before the war; in 1920, it had reached 22,414,000 tons, approximately the production before the war. To show the importance of coal production of Belgium, let us say that the coal industry employed 168,000 workers in the year of 1920, the metallurgical industry only 129,000 and the textile industry 103,000. The coal industry, then, employs the greatest number of workers. The value of the coal production in 1919 is estimated at 1,121,000,000 fr. On the basis of the production before the war, the value of the production of iron in 1919 would have been 701,000,000, of finished steel 1,086,000,000, and of zinc 415,000,000; therefore, in 1919 the value of the coal industry was greater than that of the metallurgical production.

A study has been made by transmission electron microscopy of thin foils of 304 stainless steel fatigued external to the electron microscope in reversed bending, and of thin foils fatigued directly within the microscope in alternating tension. The build-up of stacking faults in the thin foils during fatigue zoas correlated with the dislocatirm structures found in thin films prepared fror fatigued bulk specimens. The performance of the special devices designed for fatigue of thin foils so outlined and the importance of alternative methods of preparation of more uniform fatigue specimens bY vapor deposition are emphasized. INVESTIGATIONS on fatigued bulk aluminum1,' and stainless stee13j4 have revealed the existence of dislocation substructure on examination by transmission electron microscopy of electrolytically thinned foils representative of these bulk specimens. While this technique has proved extremely valuable, it has several shortcomings. First, the method of fatiguing bulk specimens and then thinning to foil for electron-transmission observation allows only one observation of internal structure at any one portion of the fatigue life. Second, thinning the bulk fatigued specimens to foil results in the loss of at least one original surface. Thus, what one sees in the remaining electron-transparent sections is an internal dislocation or fault structure which in many cases cannot be correlated with the original surface markings. This is an undesirable feature, since it is well-known that metal surfaces play an important part in the fatigue process.5 An obvious third undesirable feature of the thinning-from-bulk technique is the fact that static observations have difficulty (in the case of fatigue) explaining the mechanism of a dynamic process. What is required then is a method whereby a selected thin area can be continuously observed either while undergoing cyclic deformation or at various fixed stages of fatigue deformation. While Murr and wilkov6 have reported some success with an apparatus designed to fatigue thin metal foils directly within the electron microscope, the nature of the specimen-mounting procedure and the mechanical features involved in the adaptation of the fatigue device to the electron microscope make this method difficult to operate. It was not possible, for example, to make frequent observations of a selected area because of difficulty in maintaining a chosen area in a stable viewing position inside the electron microscope. Except for the build-up of a dislocation substructure and what are commonly referred to as "slip striations", little else has been reported from observations on thin-foil sections prepared from bulk fatigue specimens. segal17 has found "slip striations" in stainless-steel fatigued specimens which were electropolished from both sides, but gave no explanation as to their origin or identity in terms of lattice imperfections. The research to be reported in this paper was undertaken with the following objectives in mind. First, an attempt was made to devise a technique or techniques whereby thin metal foils could be fatigued and repeatedly observed by transmission electron microscopy. Second, it was hoped that some correlation could be made between deformation striations found in fatigued thin transmission specimens and thin foils prepared from bulk fatigued specimens. These investigations illustrate quite convincingly that a feasible method is available for the direct study of the fatigue mechanism and similar dynamic phenomena in thin transmission specimens inside the electron microscope. I) EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Three modes of specimen fatigue and observation of fatigue damage were used. These involved fatigue of thin-foil specimens in a special arrangement external to the electron microscope and observation of a selected area at various stages in the fatigue life, the fatigue of thin-foil transmission specimens inside the electron microscope, and the fatigue of bulk specimens external to the electron microscope followed by thin-foil preparation for direct observation at predetermined stages. The ideas set forth in this paper are proposed for consideration and discussion as the result of recent study of various plans for control and proration of gas and oil production from Kettleman North Dome oil field. They would be applicable to any oil field during its flush production stage. The problems of development and proration are so Fig. 1.—Ideal Cross-section, Kettleman North Dome Oil Field. intimately connected in Kettleman Hills and in many other flush fields that they have both been covered in this paper. Many are of the opinion that Kettleman North Dome oil field should be considered as containing only one zone to its present total penetrated thickness of nearly 1500 ft., and that the hydrocarbon content of this zone gradually changes from dark and relatively low-gravity oil with relatively low gas-oil ratios on the flanks and plunges to mostly light-colored and high-gravity oil with high gas-oil ratios in the higher structural positions, somewhat according to the idealized section shown in Fig. 1. At least the lower 400 ft. contains dark oil in the higher structural positions.

The development of a new gar lift valve has removed many of the obstacles limiting over-all gas lift efficiency. The valve is pressure charged in place in a well, and operating pressure can be changed without pulling. Temperature and gas gradient compensation have been eliminated. Intermitting and constant flow installations, using conventional pressure-charged valves, are compared with designs incorporating the new automatic stabilizer controlled valve. Specific well performance data are presented. The means of obtaining and controlling multiple-point injection of gas are explained and contrasted with single point injection. The effect on small diameter strings and multiple string installations is discussed. The effect of flowing temperature gradient on a design using conventional pressure-charged valves, the limitations imposed by such temperature, and the obvious benefits which result from the use of automatic stabilizer controlled valves are shown. Reduction of gas requirements is stated mathematically and demonstrated with specific examples which are identified as to oil company and well. Increased fluid recovery resulting from greater drawdown is illustrated. The economic advantages are mentioned with emphasis on reduction of capital expenditures, as well as reduction in operating expenses. INTRODUCTION Much of the engineering and research work performed with gas lift has been based upon the supposition that under producing conditions gas would be injected at a single point in a well. Many tests were performed in determining the optimum size of the opening through which gas would be passed and the exact placement of the valve equipment. The objectives in a gas lift installation are to unload the well and to efficiently produce the well after it is unloaded. Until recently, the function of upper valves was simply to unload the well. An operating valve located at a proper place in a well served as a single injection point for lifting liquid to the surface. The basic problem in using such equipment is to arrive at operating depth with sufficient operating pressure to efficiently lift the liquid. Few gas lift installations are designed with all required well data available. However, regardless of the quality and availability of data, and regardless of the accuracy of the design, there is the practical problem of preparing and placing gas lift equipment in the well in exact accordance with the plans and intentions of the engineer. In recognition of these and many other problems, attention was directed toward a means of removing the need for temperature and gas gradient compensation, a way to change the gas lift installation to meet the changing requirements of the well itself, and a manner of compensating for changes in oil-water content, fluid volumes, PI, and bottom-hole pressure resulting from flood or repres-suring activity. A device which could actually set and change the operating pressure of gas lift valves in the well would meet most of these needs. There now exists a new gas lift valve which fulfills the original objectives and in so doing actually accomplishes much more. With this device, called an Automatic Stabilizer Controlled valve, there is an exact matching of valve operating pressure and well conditions. Gas is injected at more than one point in the well, thereby making controlled multiple-point injection of gas a reality. Installation calculations are materially simplified and the need for basic temperature and gas gradient data no longer exists. Section I—The Automatic Stabilizer Controlled Valve The operation of the ASC valve is more easily understood by first studying a conventional pressure-charged valve and then inserting the stabilizer element to observe the changes which result. Fig. 1 is a schematic of a conventional precharged pressure-operated valve. The pressure in the dome pd, acts downward, against the area of the bellows A,, to hold the valve closed. The resulting force Bf plus the spring effect of the bellows Sf represents the total force acting to close the valve. Our continuous search for underground productivity improvements has been brought about by the diminishing ore grades in existing underground mines. The need for more efficient mining methods is a result of the economic problems facing our industry today, and this has caused us to evaluate underground haulage methods which have traditionally been the "bottleneck" in the flow of material from the ore in the natural state to the surface processing facility of any underground mining operation. Small improvements in the face haulage systems have yielded much greater benefits as they relate to overall mine productivity so it's only natural that we are all concerned with the best method of moving ore from the face to the main line haulage. In a recent paper titled "Underground Haulage Trucks - Gaining Momentum Worldwide", Richard A. Thomas concludes that the use of trucks to haul ores in underground mines is on the increase spurred by the convergence of a number of technology advances and economic realities. Perhaps the most important stimulus for the growth of trackless haulage is the high degree of haulage flexibility in underground operations. On the economic side, the demand for higher productivity from underground mines has resulted in larger physical dimensions of haulage roads, that is, higher backs and wider drifts to provide more room for high capacity haulage units. In the process of determining the most effective type of equipment for haulage, the power source must be a major consideration. For the purpose of this paper, we will limit the comparison to rubber-tired trackless haulage vehicles and not try to make a comparison between rubber-tired haulage, continuous haulage systems and rail-mounted haulage. Cost is perhaps the only really measurable factor when making a comparison between electric and diesel haulage. You will find that some costs will be very well defined in absolute terms. In other areas of comparison, cost can be fairly well estimated, and yet in still others, the costs are totally arbitrary. Let's take a look at some of the cost considerations. (Figure 1) first of all, is the initial cost of the equipment. This capital cost quite often is a determining factor in the type of haulage vehicle to be selected, yet this initial cost is perhaps the most insignificant of all costs when evaluating an operation over the long term. Of much greater concern, is the cost of maintenance. This cost will often run three times the original capital investment during the life of a single piece of haulage equipment. This factor can include rebuild to extend the life of the original capital investment, but certainly includes the labor and materials necessary, plus the inventory to keep the equipment in good repair. Perhaps one cost which is now playing an even greater role in the rubber-tired haulage operation, is the cost of fuel. Conoco has recently come up with some rough estimates which indicate that diesel fuel will cost an average of three times the equivalent kilowatt output in direct electric power. Diesel fuel is almost twice the cost of stored electric power. (This of course relates to the efficiencies of charging and recovery of power from lead acid storage cells.) These particular figures of course will vary from one area to another but I think that there is enough significance here to certainly warrant the further study of fuel costs for each particular area or mine. Another cost is breakdown expense. This must be treated differently from maintenance costs because a potentially larger expense is involved, more than just parts and labor. Now we have to deal with the cost of lost production time, which can have a much greater overall effect. Mine plan economics are another cost consideration where we can't make a comparison without looking at specifics. Here you must look at the movement of power centers vs. the flexibility and freedom of movement of vehicles. The determination must be made as to what types of equipment will fit into any predetermined mine plan and if a change in the planned roadway dimensions for the mine plan itself would be more economical so that more efficient type of equipment could be utilized. Finally, two of the most important aspects to be considered with potential ramifications far beyond what we have mentioned previously, is the cost of health and safety, which is really the cost of meeting current and future government regulations, reasonable or otherwise. And of course, when making any consideration here it is impossible to come up with anything more than an educated guess on the cost of meeting the new regulations. Now let's take a look at some of the advantages of diesel vehicles as well as advantages offered by electric vehicles, both battery and cable powered versions (Figure 2). Much of the data used in this comparison is based on experience with three vehicles manufactured by Jeffrey Mining Machinery Division, Dresser Industries. Jeffrey manufactures all three types, each with approximately a 15-ton capacity, even though few of these Jeffrey vehicles are used in uranium mining operations. Much of our experience comes from the 4114 diesel powered RAMCAR which is a 4-wheel drive, articulated steering,vehicle powered by a Caterpillar 3306NA engine and using a powershift transmission. This will be compared with the performance of the Jeffrey 404H battery powered RAMCAR with articulated steering which utilizes a separate 35 HP DC drive motor on each of two wheels with solid-state speed controls, and the final comparison will be made on the Jeffrey 4015 cable-reel shuttle car which is powered by two 60 HP constant

Meeting of Dec. 19, 1913.-The President reported the appointment of the Committee on Junior Members and Affiliated Student Societies, and the Committee on Coal and Coke, which .appointments were approved. The President was authorized to appoint the members of a Committee on Safety and Sanitation. The President appointed the Finance Committee of the Institute as a Committee to audit the accounts of the Treasurer (By-Law V). On the recommendation of the Executive Committee, Charles F. Rand was appointed a representative of this Institute on the Board of Trustees of the United Engineering Society for a term of three years (By-Law XIV of the Institute, By-Law XI of the U.E.S.). The Executive Committee reported that it had passed the following resolutions: That the next summer meeting of the Institute be held at Salt. Lake City during Aug. 10 to 14, 1914, inclusive; That an exchange of .the Bulletin and Transactions be made with the Canadian Bureau of Mines; That a sum of $50 be contributed for the year 1914 to the Commission publishing the Annual Tables of Physical and Chemical Constants; That the Secretary be given power to reduce at his discretion the number of exchanges between the Bulletin and other publications which are not retained as a permanent part of the Library; That the contract for binding Volume XLV of the Transactions be awarded to the Butler, Ward Co., in accordance with their bid of Nov. 21, 1913;

In any mining district where benefication of the ores is practiced, one can usually observe several types of flow sheets even though the various producers are milling ore from the same geological formations. It is obviously impossible to describe all the mills in the Porcupine district. However, the following description of some of them is of particular interest in that it shows where one mill has paid particular attention to corduroy blanket practice; one to gravity concentration of sulfides for intensive cyanidation of the values therein contained; one to flotation of values and cyanidation of this product only; and others where small variations of standard all-slime cyanidation practice prevail. In all cases it will be seen that cyanidation is the basic principle. Discussions involving the difference in the flow sheets and the reasons for them will always be of value to those interested in the art. The author of this article, however, believes that such discussions should originate from the operators of the mills under discussion. For this reason no comparisons or discussion will be included in the description of the mills mentioned. Should any reader of this article obtain information therefrom which will be of value to him in helping to solve his own particular problems, the author will consider that the article has satisfactorily served its purpose. All values mentioned throughout this article are based on the value of gold at $20.67 per ounce. Coniaurum Mines, Limited The ore of the Coniaurium mines consists of a mineralized schist and quartz containing about 2.5 per cent sulfides. Owing to the low grade of ore developed in the mine, extreme care has had to be exercised throughout the entire mining and milling operation in order that an operating profit might be obtained. The management, however, has been able to keep costs down, with the result that at present the outlook for the property is considerably brighter than it has been in the past. ABOUT 2 lb. of alumina (aluminum oxide) of high purity is required to produce a pound of metallic aluminum. Projected production of metallic aluminum in the United States is now seven to ten times the peacetime rate a few years ago. In the past, all the alumina for aluminum production in the United States has been obtained from bauxite. Part of the bauxite was mined in the United States--chiefly in Arkansas-and part was imported from Surinam. All of it was chemically treated in the United States to separate the greater part of the aluminum oxide from the bauxite, alkaline solutions being used, in a method known as the Bayer process. The ingredients of the bauxite other than alumina, such as the compounds of iron titanium, and silicon, constitute the tailings from the Bayer-process operation. This product contains sufficient iron to give it a red color and hence it is called "red mud." Lime and soda used in the processing, are also present. Varying amounts of alumina remain in the red mud, depending upon the characteristics of the bauxite, the effectiveness of the treatment, and in particular upon the amount of silica originally present in the bauxite. High-silica bauxites result in high alumina loss in the red mud.

The annual .use of large quantities of sulphurous iron-ores (over 1,500,000 tons in the United States) has led to a search for the best methods of desulphurization, in order to make this material more available for the manufacture of a good quality of pig-iron. Although such ores can be used raw in small amounts, they must be previously roasted if they are to constitute the entire ore-charge of a furnace.

An approximate expression is obtained for the energy of a closed dislocation loop in equi1ibriu)n with a constant net stress. The result obtained is valid for loops in isotropic or anisotropzc materials provided that they are suJficiently large that the energy per unit length of a segment of the loop can be approximated by that of an infinite straight dislocation tangent to the loop. It is shown that this approximation leads to very close agreement with a more rigorous calculation of the elastic energy of a circular glide loop. The Gibbs-Wulff Form, GWF, of a dislocation is the closed planar loop which has the smallest elastic self-energy of all possible loops having the same Burgers vector and enclosing a fixed area, A.' The energy of such a loop is related to the net resolved shear stress* required to expand the loop and to the stress required to activate a Frank-Read source.223 In the following sectiorls the problem of determining the form of the GWF is discussed and an approximate method for calculating its elastic self-energy is presented. It is demonstrated that the approximations employed lead to no serious errors when applied to a calculation of the elastic energy of a circular glide loop. This method is then used to obtain a closed form expression for the energy of GWFs in isotropic and anisotropic materials. THEORY Burton, Frank, and cabrera4 have proved that the relationship of the equilibrium shape of a two-dimensional array of atoms under the influence of the Gibbs free energy associated with unit length of its boundary, G(O), is that the polar plot of G(0) vs 0 is proportional to the pedal of the GWF.* The angle 0 is measured "The pedal of the polar graph ofG(0) vs0 is the envelope of tangents to the eraph.relative to some crystallographic reference direction. The difficulty in applying this result to a closed dislocation loop arises from the self-interaction of the loop. For a dislocation the energy analogous to G(0) is a function of the total configurati~n.~ Consequently the relation which determines the GWF is an integro-differential equation rather than the simple differen- tial equation which results when G(8) is a function of 0 alone. Mitchell and smialek3 and Brown~ have used the self-stress concept introduced by ~rown' to calculate the shapes of dislocations in equilibrium with an applied stress. In this approach the glide force on an element of the dislocation loop due to the interaction of the element with the rest of the loop is equated to the glide force exerted by the local applied stress. The shape of the loop is then adjusted so that the two forces above are equal at all points on the loop. It is possible to calculate the energies of such loops by noting that, for equilibrium with an applied stress, the energy is equal to pijbiAj (summation convention) where bi is the Burgers vector, p.. is the local net stress tensor, and Ai is a vector directed perpendicular to the plane of thd loop with magnitude equal to the area of the loop. Also Brown' has calculated the energy of a hypothetical polygonal GWF using the above technique and anisotropic elasticity. However, his indicated solution for the energy in the general case of an arbitrary GWF is only slightly less involved than an iterative solution of the integrodifferential equation referred to earlier. In the present work the approximation employed by DeWit and Koehler' is used to calculate the energy of a closed loop in equilibrium with an applied stress. That is, the energy of a loop segment, ds, is approximated by the product of ds and the energy per unit length of an infinite, straight dislocation in a cylinder coaxial with the tangent to the loop at the angular position of the segment. This is known as the "line tension" approximation. The inner cutoff radius of the elastic solution defines the core radius, while the outer cutoff radius is determined by some characteristic dimension of the loop. Actually, both of these radii vary with the edge-screw character of the segment. The effective core radius changes because of the orientation dependence of the Peierls width of a dislocation,8 and the outer radius should be the radial distance from the circumference of the loop to the center of symmetry of the area enclosed by the loop.g However, since the energy varies logarithmically with the ratio of these radii while depending directly on the effective elastic constants, only the effect of the latter is considered. This approximation also neglects the self-interaction of the loop segments. For small loops this will doubtless be extremely important, but for large glide loops produced by plastic deformation the self-interaction is not nearly so important in determining the energy of the loop. This point is illustrated by the following calculation of the energy of a circular loop. Consider a circular loop of radius R which lies in the XI - x, plane of an infinite isotropic continuum and whose Burgers vector makes an angle $ with xs. The fifth convention of the National Foreign Trade Council was held in Cincinnati, Apr. 18, 19 and 20. More than one thousand accepted delegates were registered, the American Institute of Mining Engineers being represented by W. L. Saunders and W. N. Thayer. The convention was called to order Thursday morning, Apr. 18, in the convention hall of the Hotel Gibson; by the Chairman, Mr. James .A. Farrel, president of the U. S. Steel Corporation, and was in continuous session for two clays, several group sessions being held simultaneously. The convention adjourned Saturday morning after receiving the report of the central committee. The dominant themes of the convention were: First, "Win the War" and second, "Establish Foreign Trade on a. Firmer Basis." The discussions included textiles, lumber, chemicals, automobiles, finance, and agriculture, and also those things in which mining engineers are particularly interested, metals, oil, and coal. The report of the central committee, which was adopted, recommended the stimulation' of production of all materials required for war purposes; the subordination of all trade that will not impose new and heavy penalties on our adversaries; the maintenance of such foreign trade as will support national credit and supply materials required for military and naval purposes; the continued interchange so far as possible of merchandise and products between the United States and. Latin-America, Asia and Oceania; the immediate increase of tonnage in the north Atlantic; the cheerful and whole-hearted cooperation of importers

A series of 0.21 pci carbon steel melts was processed under conditions which sinzulated industrial vacuum degassing practices. The results indicated that the efliciency of carbon deoxidation was not significantly increased by vacuunz degassing at chamber pressures below 100 torr. The two common phenomena of vacuu?rz carbon deoxidation, i.e.,an unaccountable carbon loss and nonequilibrium deoxidation, were observed in this study. Oxygen from adsorbed and chenzically combined water of certain refractory structures was probably responsible for the unaccourttable carbon drop. The nonequzlibrium deoxida-tion phenomenon was adequalely correlated by a bubble nucleation )mechanism. Although the major limiting factor in oxygen removal from these melts contained in alumina crucibles could not be eslablished with certainty, there was some evidence that melt-refractory interactions were not the most imp-portant limiting factor. CONSIDERABLE attention has been given to the use of carbon in conjunction with vacuum degassing* as a deoxidation technique. An advantage of utilizing the reaction: for deoxidation purposes is that the reaction product is gaseous and hence can be effectively removed from the melt. The pressure dependency of Eq. [I] is illustrated by the expression for the thermodynamic equilibrium constant, K: where pco is the partial pressure of carbon monoxide, and hc and ho are, respectively, the Henrian activities of carbon and oxygen in molten steel. The thermodynamic aspects of the C-0 reaction in molten Fe-C-0 alloys have been investigated extensively. Theoretical predictions based on Eq. [2] indicate that, at the chamber pressures reached in most vacuum degassing units, carbon is the most effective deoxidizer that can be obtained. ~ornak' has compared industrial values of carbon and oxygen contents with values calculated from theory, and has shown that on a commercial basis vacuum carbon deoxidation has not achieved the degree of success that is predicted from theoretical considerations of the C-0 reaction. The use of industrial units to determine the reason for this deviation is limited by economics and the difficulty in controlling critical process variables. Therefore laboratory-sized experiments in this area should yield valuable information. Investigations on vacuum carbon deoxidation have been made in experiments conducted under vacuum induction melting conditions where pressures in the low micron range, long treatment times, exposure to highly dynamic vacuum conditions, and relatively quiescent bath conditions have been maintained. Inve~ti~ators~~~ utilizing vacuum induction melting for the production of high-purity iron by carbon deoxidation have concluded that, under high vacuum conditions, melt-refractory interactions constantly supply oxygen to the melt. Thus, it has been suggested that refractory dissociation rather than the C-0 reaction establishes the lowest possible oxygen content of a melt. Thomas and Moreau4 and Bennett, Protheroe, and ward5 have studied carbon deoxidation of Fe-C alloys melted in magnesia crucibles under reduced pressures. The results of both studies differed considerably from those predicted by theory, and the limiting factor for lower oxygen contents was attributed to melt-refractory interactions. Because the refractory material used in both investigations was magnesia, no quantitative measure of crucible reaction could be made and the amount of carbon consumed during treatment was utilized as an indirect indication of the extent of crucible reaction. Studies concerned with the determination of the minimum oxygen content attainable in pure iron and Fe-C alloy material vacuum-induction-melted in various crucible materials have also been conducted."' The suitability of a crucible refractory for use under vacuum conditions appears to depend upon the major refractory constituent, the amount and type of impurity oxides, and the composition of the melt. Meadowcroft and Elliott9 have presented a theoretical review of the type and extent of various refractory reactions which should be considered in vacuum refining. ~eadowcroft'~ considered the vacuum degassing process to be dependent upon the "carbon boil" and has proposed that a part of the difference between the experimental and theoretical results for vacuum carbon deoxidation may be explained by the fact that the pco term in Eq. THE construction and operation of by-product coke-oven plants in America are essential to strong national defense and of the greatest importance to many widely diversified undertakings as well as to safety and health. CARBONIZATION PROCESS Coal used under a boiler or in a locomotive is consumed by combustion. Coal used in a by-product oven is distilled or carbonized, meaning that heat is applied to the coal, out of contact with air, causing a distillation that removes the volatile matter in the coal in the form of gas and vapor, leaving coke as a final product. From the gas and vapor distilled from the coal, many valuable substances can be secured, known as by-products. Hence the name "by-product oven." The simplest example of this principle can be shown by means of an ordinary clay pipe. If powdered coal is placed in the bowl of the pipe, the opening of the bowl is plugged with clay, and the bowl placed in a flame, the bowl will become hot, transferring the heat through the wall of the bowl to the coal within. When this coal attains a temperature of about 950°F., gas will begin to pour out of the pipe stem, and this gas may be lighted. A black liquid also will exude from the stem of the pipe. This is tar mixed with certain other products. What remains in the bowl after distillation is coke. A coke oven corresponds to the bowl of the pipe. A modern oven of the latest type is a refractory brick chamber approximately 42 ft. long and 14 ft. high, averaging 18 in. in width. The oven is filled with coal through closable charging holes in the oven top. Each end of the oven consists entirely of a self-sealing door, the removal of which permits the finished coke to be discharged by means of a power-operated pusher machine. The ovens are built in batteries, and the heating is effected by gas burned in vertical flues in the oven walls, each set of flues heating the walls of two adjacent ovens. Such ovens carbonize a charge of approximately 18 tons of coal in 18 hr., or have a daily throughput of 24 tons per oven, producing about I 7 tons of coke. In times of need, the output may be increased by raising the temperature of flues, thus shortening the coking time. There is one great essential difference in principle between distillation in a clay pipe and in a coke oven. In the 18-in. oven, the distillation proceeds from two parallel walls held at a high temperature (over 2000°F.) and instead of all the coal being heated at once, the distillation is a progressive one creeping inward. The average travel of this heating is 1/2 in. per hour from each vertical wall, and as the volatile products are formed progressively they must push away from the interior toward the wall through the previously formed hot coke, then up the walls and over the top of the coal charge, finally escaping through the outlet pipe. This results in a cracking of the components into many different and valuable substances not formed when the carbonizing temperature is low.

In order to better understand the fracturing process, bottom-hole pressures were measured during a number of typical fracturing operations. A recently developed system was used that allows simultaneous surface recording of both the bottom-hole and wellhead pressures on the same chart. The results from six fracruring treatments are summarized on the basis of the pressure data obtained. Al-though no complete analysis is attempted, the value of accurate pressure measurements is emphasized. Important characteristics of the bottom-hole pressure record do not appear at the wellhead because of the damping effect of the fluid-filled column. In four of the six treatments described, the formations apparently fractured during the initial surge of pressure with only crude oil in the well. The properties of the fluids used during the treatments are given and the fluid friction losses are obtained directly from the pressure records. This technique is also shown to be adequate for determining when various fluids, used during the process, enter the formation. INTRODUCTION Hydraulic fracturing for the purpose of increasing well productivity is now accepted in many areas as a regular completion and workover practice. Numerous articles have appeared in the literature discussing the various techniques and theories of hydraulic fracturing'. In general, three basic types of formation fractures are recognized today. These are the horizontal fracture, the vertical fracture, and fractures along natural planes of weakness in the formation'. Any one or all three of these fracture types may be present in a fracturing operation. However, with only the wellhead pressure record as a guide, it is difficult at best to determine if the formation actually fractured, and is almost impossible to determine the type of fracture induced. These difficulties arise in part because the wellhead pressure record, especially when fracturing through tubing, does not accurately reflect the pressure variations occurring at the formation. Several factors contribute to this effect and preclude the possibility of using the wellhead pressure as a basis for accurately calculating the bottom-hole pressure. These factors are: 1. The compressibilities of the fluids which damp the pressure variations. 2. The changes in the densities of the fluids or apparent densities of the sand-laden fluids. 3. The flowing friction of the various fluids and mixtures, which is dependent on the flow rates and the condition of the tubing, casing, or wellbore. 4. The non-Newtonian characteristics of a sand-oil mixture and its dependence upon the fluid properties, the concentration of sand, and the mesh size used. 5. The unknown and variable temperatures throughout the fluid column. Because of these reasons it was determined that in order to obtain a more accurate knowledge of the nature of fracturing, the bottom-hole pressure must be measured along with the pressure at the surface during a fracturing treatment. Even with accurate pressure data, a reliable estimate of the nature of fracturing is still dependent upon knowledge of the tectonic conditions. However, the hydraulic pressure on the formation is basic to any approach to a complete analysis. In order to accomplish this objective a system was developed to record the wellhead and bottom-hole pressures simultaneously at the surface. By recording both pressures on a dual pen strip-chart recorder, it was possible to greatly expand the time scale so that rapid pressure variations would be faithfully recorded. By such simultaneous recording, time discrepancies inherent in separate records are eliminated, thus overcoming one of the most difficult problems associated with bottom-hole recording systems. This paper illustrates the results obtained by using this system during six typical fracturing operations. All of these tests were taken in wells that were treated through tubing. By a direct comparison of the wellhead and bottom-hole pressures, the importance of obtaining complete pressure information during a fracturing treatment is emphasized. THE INSTRUMENTATION AND PROCEDURES The bottom-hole pressure measuring instrument consisted of a pressure-sensing element, a telemetering section, and a lead-filled weight or sinker bar. The pressure-sensing element used was an isoelastic Amerada pressure-gauge element. By using an isoelastic element, no temperature compensation was necessary in the tests described, since the temperature was believed to be well below the maximum temperature limit of 270°F. The rotary output shaft of this helical Bourdon tube element was coupled to a precision miniature potentiometer. Successful explosive gas well stimulation requires a thorough understanding of explosively driven cracks under confining in-situ stresses. In a previous paper (Simha, et a1 1983) the problem of explosively driven cracks was experimentally investigated to reveal the features of crack propagation. It was observed that the explosively driven crack propagation is the result of two different but overlapping phases. The first phase involving the initiation and early time crack propagation is entirely governed by the explosively generated stress transients. The rapidly decaying stress transients then lead to the second phase of crack propagation largely controlled by the in-situ stresses. The purpose of this paper is to more fully understand the characteristics of the first phase concerning the initiation and early time propagation of explosively driven cracks. Experiments are conducted with plastic models under biaxial compression and the dynamic event is observed with a high speed multiple spark gap camera of the Cranz-Schardin type. The experimental observations are utilized to propose analytical models of crack initiation under explosive loading to aid in the design of multiple fracturing necessary for successful application of modern well stimulation techniques.

Several correlations have been proposed to relate energy consumption and size reduction in comminution, and although these are arrived at from different starting points, it is postulated that they are all statements of the same basic concept. To test this postulate, the dry ball mill grindability of langbeinite was determined, and the results were analyzed according to the various methods. An examination ' of the energy-particle size relationships proposed in the recent past revealed that they had much in common. In fact, the conclusion was tentatively drawn that these expressions were essentially the same, even though they were arrived at from quite different basic premises. The equations attributed to Charles2 and Holmes3 were shown to re- duce to the same single equation, W - A K-3, and the simulated continuous test used by Maxson et al.4 was shown to give the best experimental value of the required empirical parameter, ß. Furthermore, the size distribution parameter a in the Schuhmann equation, y - (x/K)2, was shown to be equal to ß in many cases. The kinetic approach used by Arbiter and Bhrany5 should give the same results as the Maxson test procedure; however, the batch operation used by Arbiter and Bhrany could not produce data that would be as precise as the simulated continuous technique. To test the validity of these conclusions, the simulated continuous method was used to obtain data on the dry grinding of langbeinite. The results are discussed in terms of the various equations and approaches. A LUCID, thorough and powerful review of the impact of your tax laws on mining operations has already been presented by Granville S. Borden*. He has brought into focus and relief the pressure-points at which the shoe pinches most, has suggested some remedial measures, and enunciated much sound doctrine about the inter-relationship and interplay of taxation policy and mining activity. Under the heading "What Every Lawmaker Should Know", he laid down the fundamental proposition that "the magnitude of our mineral resources varies inversely with the magnitude of the taxes levied upon them." With this, as with his other major premises, all mining men must be in hearty concurrence. There can be no doubt that a flourishing and expansive future for the mining industry in this country, in Canada, or anywhere else will depend on the thoroughness with which these fundamental propositions are grasped by legislators, by national policy-makers and by public opinion at large. Coming to the specific points to which Mr. Borden has drawn our attention, I will touch on the corresponding provisions in Canadian federal tax law, by way of comparison and contrast.

Processes for the removal of phosphorus from iron or steel are steadily assuming greater importance in view of the abundance of high-phosphorus iron-ore and the diminishing supply of pure ore. In the present methods of removing phosphorus by the basic open-hearth or basic Bessemer process, or even by electric processes, complete control over the metallurgical conditions is either impossible or has not yet been realized. The removal of phosphorus has so long been accomplished along certain well-defined lines, that when the electric furnace made its appearance metallurgists adhered to the same old reactions used in the older processes and failed to appreciate and take advantage of the new forces at their disposal. One object of the present paper is to set forth more clearly the metallurgical reactions by which phosphorus can be removed from iron, and to show the necessity of controlling the conditions, and particularly the temperature, by means other than combustion in the furnace-chamber. Invariably, the commercial removal of phosphorus has been accomplished by oxidation. The reactions involved in oxidation of phosphorus in general consist, first, of the formation of P2O5 and second, the combination of this oxide with lime, forming calcium phosphate, which latter is held in a slag high in iron oxide. In the present-used processes, the phosphorus is never removed without the assistance or presence of considerable quantities of iron oxide.
