The firing of explosive charges by electricity dates back to 1745 when a Doctor Watson is said to have used an electric spark for igniting gunpowder. His method failed in practical application because, to ignite blasting powder, heat must be applied for a period longer than the duration of an electrostatic spark; Wheatstone found that this does not exceed 1/24000 sec. The usual result, therefore, of an electrical discharge in gunpowder is to scatter the grains, without igniting them. Benjamin Franklin partly overcame this difficulty by confining the powder and crushing grains that lay in the line of discharge. In 1822, after the primary cell had been discovered by Volta, Robert Hare, professor of chemistry at the University of Philadelphia, noticed the heating of a short piece of wire placed in the circuit of a voltaic battery. Later work by Oersted, Faraday, Wheatstone, and Henley resulted in the developmcnt of the magneto blasting machines. Fulminates of gold and silver are thought to have been discovcrcd by Cornelius Drebbel, about 1600. Pepys, in his diary for November 11, 1663, recounts a conversation with Doctor Allen, who told him about aurium fulminans "of which a grain ... put in a silver spoon and fired, will give a blow like a musquett and strike a hole through the silvel spoon downward, without the least force upward.'ll This fallacious belief that explosives act downwards only is still held by many who should know better. Fulminate of mercury was discovered by Howard in 1799. J. Shaw of Philadelphia is said to have invented a fulminate-of-mercury cap in 1814; his idea was later adopted by gunmakers in England and France. The principal advantages of mercury fulminate for use in detonators are the simplicity of exploding it and the great shock developed by its explosion.

There have been no major field developments during 1935. Operations have proceeded normally on the company's three producing fields, Masjid-i-Sulaiman, Haft Kel and Naft-i-Shah. The refinery at Kermanshah was commissioned in September, 1935, with a rated throughput capacity of 75,000 tons a year of topped crude to meet local requirements. Crude production from the Masjid-i-Sulaiman and Haft Kel fields is tabulated below: Masjid-i-Sulaiman Field.—The flowing lives of wells have been extended by (I) a process of acid treatment, thereby reducing the bottom-hole pressure differentials, and (2) by reducing the back-pressure. Optimum producing conditions for individual wells have been determined as a result of an experimental study of the amount of available energy in the reservoir crude and of energy losses in flowing wells. The return of surplus products to the reservoir has continued to be a satisfactory economic operation and the crude throughput capacity of the topping plant has been increased. The viscosity of residue returned to the reservoir is reduced before injection by regassing at 35 lb. per sq. in. absorption pressure with surplus gas. The pressure in the gas dome is falling at the low rate of one pound per annum. Haft Kel Field.—The delimitation of the main structure has proceeded; the oil-bearing area so far proved being about 50 square miles.

Total crude fluorspar reserves in western Europe, containing more than 35 pct CaF*, are estimated at 12 million metric tons, while reserves in the USSR and Soviet sphere may exceed 5 million metric tons. The bulk of these reserves are concentrated in the USSR, Spain, United Kingdom, Western Germany, and Italy. Since published estimates of the tonnages of individual mines and explored deposits are not available for most countries in Europe, the estimates given in Table I for individual countries are necessarily approximate, as they have been compiled from various sources and modified and combined according to the author's judgment. The majority of fluorspar deposits in Europe belong to the late Paleozoic metallogenetic epochs and have been found within or along the borders of the Hercynian massifs. Deposits in the Central and Esterel massifs of France, those of Western and Eastern Germany, Sardinia, the Catalonian coastal range and the Sierra de 10s Santos in Spain, and those of Devonshire and Cornwall belong to the Hercynian metallogenetic epochs. The deposits in southern Norway and Sweden belong to the middle Paleozoic or later, those of northern England to the late Paleozoic or later, those of northern Spain and Greece to the late Mesozoic, and those of northern and probably central Italy and Switzerland to the early Tertiary. Fluorspar occurs typically in veins, lenses, and stringers, but also in bedded replacement deposits and pockets, and may be colorless to white, yellow, green, pink, brown, blue, or purple to almost black. Except for the colorless variety, the only kind which can be used for the optical industry, the color of the fluorspar does not affect its ultimate use,

Electrokinetic measurements on cassiterite were made in the presence of sodium di-hydrogen phosphate, mono-hydrogen arsenate, bisulfite, and sulfate. Flotation studies were also conducted using sodium dodecyl sulfonate in the presence of these salts. It was found that the anions specifically adsorb on cassiterite in the order H2AsO-4 H2PO4 HSO3 SO4 and consequently cause flotation depression. The adsorption mechanisms of the various inorganic anions are discussed in detail.

While all of the Southwest Texas fields lie within the Gulf Coastal Plain this area may be divided into three subdivisions—the Coastal Plain zone proper, the Reynosa Escarpment zone, and the interior zone. The Coastal zone includes that strip adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico and . extending inland for a distance of about 60 miles and includes the Palo Blanco, Palangana, Piedras Pintas, Kingsville, Agua Dulce, Saxet, White Point and Refugio fields. The Reynosa Escarpment zone includes a Pliocene overlap over older Tertiary sediments lying west of the Coastal zone. The western margin of the Reynosa formation forms a more or less well-defined westward facing escarpment with which the so-called Reynosa Escarpment fields are indirectly related. These fields include those in eastern Zapata, eastern Webb, western Jim Hogg, western Duval, McMullen, Live Oak, Bee, Goliad and Victoria counties. The interior zone includes these fields west of the Reynosa Escarpment which are not in any way related to it and are on separate types of structure. Production data by fields and wells are shown in Table 1. Roma.—During 1928 the Texas Co. completed two small gas wells at 198 ft. on the Roma Structure near the town of Roma on the Rio Grande in Starr County. This gas is of no commercial importance but was used for fuel in drilling other deep tests on this structure. Three dry holes ranging from 3600 to 4200 ft. were drilled; then their No. 4 Guerra, the fourth deep test, was completed during December as a small producer of 37" Bé. oil from a sand at 3560 to 3590 ft. No production was marketed during December but arrangements were being made to handle the output from this well during 1930. This is the first commercial producer in Starr County. Driscoll.—In 1929, Robert Driscoll discovered gas on his Santa Rosalia Ranch in Duval County while drilling water wells. Two sands were developed, one at 2400 ft. and another at 2936 ft. and several gas wells were completed in each, ranging in volume from 15,000,000 to 40,000,000 cu. ft. and in reservoir pressure from 500 to 1,000 Ib. Early in January of 1929, Mr. Driscoll's No. 14 Fee was completed as a 50-bbl. oil producer at 2894 ft. Two other oil producers were completed early in 1929. ALL phases of plant operation must be synchronized so that the number of interruptions in the flow of material may be reduced to a minimum. In the majority of plants operating under a labor agreement, time lost during the operating shift cannot be made up with overtime. With the work week restricted to 35 hr., the ratio of productive time to total time justifies extra effort in keeping the plant operating at capacity during the productive shift. This does not apply when central plants with adequate storage are operated by multiple shifts. In such installations the problems become similar to those of any factory or mill where added units parallel circuits, or excess capacity serve to maintain the average production during intervals of maintenance shutdown. These plants, by special agreement, may run continuously, barring mechanical interruptions. The control of plant operation is in those procedures that are practiced to obtain from the run-of-mine product a high recovery of clean coal products to meet adopted trade standards and consumer specifications at the lowest possible cost. Correlation of all factors for continuous operation requires more than mechanical perfection in the plant. The run-of-mine coal must be delivered to the preparation plant without delays and the clean coal and refuse products taken away. Power supply and water requirements must be adequate. Signal systems must be established for emergency stops and to facilitate resumption of coal flow. ORGANIZATION Probably the most important item for successful operation of a preparation plant is a capable organization interconnected with the mine organization. A typical organization chart for companies operating in the Pennsylvania anthracite region is shown in Fig. 1. THE quality of sheet and strip products made of rimming steel is closely related to the structure and chemistry of the ingots. The varia-tion in composition throughout the ingot, as affected by segregation, is of great importance, as are also the form and distribution of the voids that result from the gases evolved. It is because of this importance that the considerable literature in this field has accumulated. No attempt is made in the present paper to compile a bibliography of the excellent work that has already been done, as this has been adequately covered in the many excellent reports on the heterogeneity of steel ingots prepared by a joint committee and published by the British Iron and Steel Institute.1 From time to time, in any field of investigation new tools and new technique are developed, which make further progress possible. In the field with which this paper is concerned, this is true. The development of the vacuum-fusion method as a means of following oxygen segregation, and a technique for obtaining the volume and composition of the gases evolved during solidification, have opened the way to obtaining data by means of which some considerable progress has been realized in developing more of the detailed mechanisms of solidification and segregation in rimming-steel ingots.

Experiments of previous investigations have indicated that calcium-copper alloy, when used as a deoxidizer for molten copper, results in a sound copper casting of good physical and electrical properties. Braden-berg and Wiensl have obtained successful results in casting sound copper using calcium for deoxidizing. Masing2 has obtained deoxidized copper of high density and high conductivity by use of calcium. Pratt,3 in 1907, patented the use of calcium for the deoxidation and degasification of copper. Schumacher, Ellis and Eckel,l in 1929, conducted a series of experiments on deoxidizing copper with calcium. They concluded that so long as there is only a small percentage of residual calcium the mechanical and electrical properties of the copper deoxidized are not impaired, and the deoxidation is thorough. For this investigation, a copper-calcium alloy high in calcium and 10 variously deoxidized copper ingots were prepared. The investigation concerns itself with the casting properties and structure of these variously deoxidized ingots, their working and annealing characteristics, and the resulting physical and electrical properties of the worked materials. Preparation of Special Copper-calcium Alloy and Experimental Ingots For use as a deoxidizing agent, an alloy of copper and calcium with fairly high calcium content was prepared, by melting pure electrolytic copper in a graphite crucible in an ordinary gas-fired pot furnace. The molten copper was kept well covered with calcium chloride slag. Small chunks of calcium were wrapped in thin copper sheet, placed on the end of a graphite rod and plunged down into the molten copper and thoroughly stirred. Upon completion of the calcium additions the crucible content was poured out into a cake about one inch thick. Analysis of this alloy gave 4.4 per cent calcium. IN view of the prominence which the conical mill has attained in the fine-crushing field .within the few years since its introduction, the following comparison with its more mature forerunner, the Chilean mill, based on extensive tests, is submitted in the interest of the milling profession. Soon after designing the concentrating plant of the Miami Copper Co. in 1909, the Hardinge conical mill made its appearance in the milling forum. . Its possibility as a suitable crushing device for the plant was well recognized, but in view of the lack of commercial demonstration, at the time, as to capacity, efficiency for desired product, and the still more uncertain factors of cost of maintenance and power consumption, it was deemed that the immediate adoption of this machine throughout the plant would be a hazardous undertaking. For these reasons it was decided to equip the majority of the immediately required units of the plant with Chilean mills, the fine-crushing proficiencies of which were better known, and one section with Hardinge mills, to serve as a test unit for the guidance of future installations and replacements. Thereby, after 1.5 years' operation with both types of mills, a thorough test as to metallurgical efficiency and cost economy has been obtained. The conical mill used in these tests is the 8-ft. Hardinge pebble mill, having a cylinder 22 in. in length. The cylindrical portion of this mill is lined with cast-iron liner plates, and the conical extensions with silex bricks bound together by cement. Each. liner plate carries a projecting lifter, the function of which is to increase the height of drop of the lifted material. Danish No. 5 pebbles, obtained from the coast deposits of Denmark, are used for the grinding charge. The Chilean mill used is a fast-running, 3-roller, 6-ft. Saturn mill, with screens of 0.037-in. opening. The feed to these mills is the oversize of Callow screens having 0.029-in. openings, which. follow rolls crushing to 0.5 in.

IT has been known for many years that when a wire is moved in a magnetic field, an electromotive force is developed which is proportional to the rate at which the wire is moved in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic intensity and to the magnetic intensity itself. If the ends of the wire are connected to a current indicator, the current behaves exactly as though the source of electromotive force were a galvanic cell. If a wire is wound circularly and rotated uniformly around a diameter not parallel to the intensity, the current flowing through the wire will be alternating of sinusoidal shape. If, instead of a single loop, there are several turns wound in a short helix, the electromotive force developed will be approximately proportional to the number of turns, the area of the helix and to the speed of rotation. The maxi-mum electromotive force will be devel-oped when the axis of rotation is perpen- dicular to the field; if this is not so, only the component of the intensity that is perpendicular to the axis of rotation is effective. This is the principle of the usual earth inductor. If two similar coils are rotated together at two different points for which the magnetic field intensities perpendicular to the axes of rotation are different, the electromotive forces developed will each depend on its corresponding intensity and be a measure of that intensity. However, the criterion of hardenability [ ] ture after quenching should consist wholly of martensite; and that transformation of austenite to intermediate-temperature products during quenching will have a deleterious effect upon the physical properties, particularly the toughness, of the tempered material. On April 2 and 3, 1970, more than 100 geologists attended the Sixth Annual Forum on Geology of Industrial Minerals at Ann Arbor, Mich. After this brief appearance, the Forum apparently ceased to exist- but it didn't really, and another spring will see it again in action, in another corner of the country. The organization might be characterized as the country's largest permanent floating conference on the geology of industrial minerals. What is the Forum, where did it come from, and what is it up to? The idea originated in 1964 with a small group in the Department of Geology at Ohio State University, Columbus. This group felt that a forum was needed for the exchange of geologic information on industrial rocks and minerals. They envisioned an approach-which has subsequently been adhered to--that would be dominated neither by geological academics interested in theoretical problems nor by practical engineers concerned with processing large tonnages of rock. It was proposed to focus attention on the middle part of the spectrum, especially on practical problems of geological occurrence and how these problems affect extraction and use. In terms of the standard rock-products flow sheet, which starts with a truck unloading into the primary crusher beneath the words 'from quarry,' it was proposed to focus geological attention on what is beyond the primary crusher, out in the quarry.

Laboratory imbibition and displacement experiments were performed using crude oil and cores drilled with water and preserved under anaerobic conditions. The purpose of these tests was to determine reservoir rock wettability and to find out if more oil could be recovered by use of NaOH solution than by conventional waterflooding. The preserved cores were found to be oil-wet. Contrary to work in the literature, these cores changed to water-wet upon contact with air. After exposure to air for a week, the cores yielded more oil by waterflooding than when preserved under exclusion of air. At reservoir temperature of 160F, flooding the preserved cores with 0.5N NaOH solution recovered more oil than an ordinary wa-terflood, and additional oil when following a waterflood. When the caustic solution was used from the beginning, all the extra oil was obtained before breakthrough; when the caustic followed a conventional waterflood, the extra oil was produced in the form of an oil bank ahead of the injected caustic. The increase in oil recovery resulted from wettability reversal. Also, use of caustic reduced the volume of injection required to flood out the cores. At room temperature, however, the caustic solution did not reverse the wettability and gave no additional oil recovery. Cores which had become water-wet by air exposure or caustic flooding were restored to their original oil-wet state when saturated with crude oil and allowed to equcilibrate at reservoir temperature for two weeks. Therefore, in the absence of preserved cores, it may be possible to restore weathered cores to their original wettability for use in laboratory floods. INTRODUCTION Waterflooding has been in use since 1865, and is by far the simplest of secondary recovery methods. Unfortunately, most waterfloods are inefficient in recovering oil, often leaving half or more of the original oil in place un-recovered. The low oil recovery generally results from low sweep efficiency and low displacement efficiency. Consequently, to increase oil recovery by waterflooding, sweep and displacement efficiencies should be improved. Sweep efficiency is primarily affected by reservoir heterogeneities and mobility ratio, while displacement efficiency is affected by the capillary forces between fluids and rock surfaces. For petroleum reservoirs, the capillary forces are expressed in terms of interfacial tension and wettability. If oil recovery is to be improved significantly in water- flooding, the capillary forces holding the oil in the raervoir porous matrix must be reduced or eliminated. One way to reduce capillary forces is to inject commercial surfactants ahead of the injection water into the reservoir. Laboratory tests of this method have shown no promise of an economical process yet, and no increase in oil recovery was obtained in the field trials which have been reported. Work is continuing in many companies to find surface-active agents which, in workable concentrations, can yield substantial added oil recovery. Another way to change capillary forces operating in petroleum reservoirs is by changing the pH of the injected water. Wagner et al.' showed that change in the pH sometimes activates the surface-active materials natural to some crudes and brings about gross wettability change. Since pH alteration can be obtained with cheap chemicals, such as hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide, the process shows promise of being economical in a field application. Pan American Oil Corp. reported oil recovery by use of caustic solution from a flooded-out reservoir.' Their test, conducted at a small additional cost, yielded results which were so sufficiently favorable and encouraging that the wettability reversal flood was expanded to portions of the field not previously flooded.13 It is important to bear in mind that changes in the pH of the water not only can reverse wettability but also can lower the interfacial tension between water and crude oil. Reisberg and Doscher4 have studied the pH dependency of the interfacial tension of Venture crude using sodium hydroxide solutions of various concentrations. Their data show that the interfacial tension was lowered from 23.0 to 0.02 dynes/cm by increasing the NaOH concentration from 0.005 to 0.5 per cent by weight. Thus, the use of NaOH may lead to additional oil recovery due to both wettability reversal and lowering of interfacial tension. Whether alteration of pH results in wettability reversal from oil-wet to water-wet and increases oil recovery depends on wetting properties of the reservoir rock and the crude. This necessitates delicate laboratory experiments, with suitable core and fluid samples from a field. Although many investigators have studied wettability reversal floods in the laboratory,1,2,5,6 these studies have been carried out with synthetic porous media, refined laboratory fluids and surface-active chemicals to simulate the process. The study presented in this paper is the first time that wettability reversal by pH alteration has been accomolished in laboratory core floods using carefully preserved natural cores, live crude and with experiments performed at reservoir pressure and temperature.

Oil production in north Louisiana in 1937 was 28,668,070 bbl., an increase of 1,896,925 bbl., or 7.1 per cent over 1936, as against an increase of 178 per cent from 1935 to 1936. Gas production of 301,148 million cu. ft. from gas wells and 17,330 million cu. ft. of casinghead gas, a total of 318,483 million, was an increase of 33,483 million cu. ft., or 11.7 per cent over 1936. Well completions numbered 716, with 411 oil wells, 175 gas wells and 130 dry holes; compared with 346, 109 and 78, respectively, in 1936. There were 58 wildcat dry holes. In addition to the wildcat producers described and tabulated with the fields, there were two small, shallow gas wells in Sabine and Tensas Parishes, which did not open fields of any present importance. At the close of 1937 there were only five wildcat tests actually drilling, with nine others shut down or temporarily abandoned. Chief interest during 1937 was in development rather than discoveries. The only real discoveries were two deep gas and distillate fields, Bear Creek and Ruston. There were also three completions of gas-distillate producers from deeper formations in old fields, of which the most important was at Cotton Valley, one discovery of oil in a previously known gas sand and five or six extensions of some importance. Geological Section The columnar section in south Arkansas (Fig. 1, p. 317) also applies in north Louisiana, with a few changes noted below. The oldest known formation in north Louisiana is a bed of rock salt. Except on salt domes, only one well at Rodessa has been drilled into this salt, but it has been penetrated by a number of wells in south Arkansas. Salt domes have been discovered near Vicksburg and Hattiesburg, Miss., and a deep well in Limestone County, Texas, has drilled into rock salt. IN spite of a world production of lead amounting to 1,300,000 tons, of which the United States produces slightly less than one-half, it appears that the mines at present are hardly able to supply the demand. For this there are several reasons. The lead deposits, geologically speaking, were formed comparatively near the surface under conditions of lower temperatures, with the richer deposits often residuary; that is, enriched by surface water, and consequently soon exhausted. Lead is practically absent from a great part of the world. The great Canadian shield, the eastern part of the Dominion, contains practically none. Scandinavia contains no lead. It is absent from geo- logical formations of great age, but does occur in large quantities in the deposits in the Rocky Mountain region. These deposits are, more or less directly, of igneous origin, but here, too, there is a tendency of the lead shoots to concentrate in the upper part, and when they go down the deposits turn to zinc-copper and some other metals. This is one of the best established facts of economic geology. The deposits of the Mississippi Valley district, from Kansas-Oklahoma, to Canada, are in comparatively accessible limestone beds, at a depth seldom more than 500 ft. Therefore, the lead is easily mined but more easily exhausted.

The kinetics of copper cementation on a rotating disc of pure aluminum were studied as a function of chloride ion concentration, rotational speed of the aluminum disc, hydrogen ion concentration, copper ion concentration, and temperature. The optimum experimental conditions for all the parameters were determined. Chloride ion was found to destroy the naturally existing aluminum oxide film, and enabled the cementation reaction to proceed. A two-step rate, observed in most of the experiments, was attributed to the attainment of a roughened surface. An Evans diagram for the copper-pure aluminum system was constructed and utilized in predicting the controlling mechanism of the system. At low temperatures (<33°C), the rate with an experimental activation energy of 20.36 kcal mol- 1 was controlled by the presence of an oxide layer. While at higher temperatures presence of an oxide layer. While at higher temperatures (>33° mol- 1 was controlled by ionic diffusion. The deposits obtained were pure copper and not a copper-aluminum alloy. The amount of aluminum dissolved was determined for each experiment, and the maximum excess consumption was found to be only 40%. The structural characteristics of the copper deposits were studied using a scanning electron microscope. These observations indicated that the deposits were either bulbous, massive crystalline, or dendrites of different degrees of fineness depending on the experimental variables. The reaction rates seemed to depend on the deposit structures in a predictable way when a particular experimental parameter was varied.

Abstract-A continuous survey of radon gas was made in two interconnecting stopes in a southwestern U. S. uranium mine to determine how the various phases of the mining cycle affected the radon concentration. The radon was monitored continuously with five detectors. One detector monitored the intake air, one the exhaust air, and three the stope air. The radon concentrations present during slushing, blasting, and exhaust fan shutoff were compared with concentrations on a nonwork day as a base level. Inside the stope, the radon concentration increased about 40% during slushing and 425% after blasting. Intake air radon increased 1600% and the stope air increased 550% while the surface exhaust fan was off.
