The effect of the height of a retaining-wall-supported berm on the slope stability of an idealized mine-tailings dam was investigated. The material in the dam was idealized as a two-layered system with the phreatic surface delineating the boundary between the layers. In each layer the tailings were assumed to be homogeneous and isotropic. The effect of variation in height of the berm was examined for tailings dams with three different, commonly occurring slopes. The stresses and displacements were obtained using the finite element method. An incremental analysis technique was employed to simulate sequential construction of both the tailings dam and the retaining-wall-supported berm. A one-dimensional element was used to represent all interfaces and discontinuities in the finite element model. Assuming a hyperbolic model, the nonlinear stress-strain relationship for the tailings was approximated using the method of successive increments. The stresses obtained in the finite element analyses were used in conventional slope stability analyses assuming circular failure surfaces. The results of the study show that the use of a retaining-wall-supported berm is an effective means of improving the stability of a tailings dam. This increased stability is greater for dams with steeper slopes. In addition, the increase in factor of safety is particularly notable for berm heights less than 25% of the height of the dam.

It is apparent that repressuring of the oil measures is becoming increasingly important to the oil industry, and is a matter that warrants the best efforts of the petroleum engineer charged with applying this method of operation to a producing property. Considerable attention has been directed to repressuring in various California oil fields, such as Dominguez and Seal Beach, which have served to sell the more progressive operator on this idea and also to keep him sold. The projects that have received most attention are in comparatively young fields where the fluid levels are high, the wells, perhaps, still flowing, where the wet gas production is of considerable volume, and where there is vital need of immediate conservation of gas, which otherwise would be blown to the air. The new State of California Gas Law, which prohibits the waste of gas, has served to interest the oil industry in means of conserving the gas that is now being blown to the air because of lack of markets. This vitally affects the operator in the older, well-depleted oil fields of the state, because in many cases he has a limited market for gas, on account of the flush production from the more active oil fields. While the waste of gas is relatively small in these older fields, such as the Midway-Sunset area, it now attains considerable importance, since under the new State Gas Law it must be put to some bcneficial use. Repressuring in the older fields of California has not received the attention of the petroleum engineers that is warranted by the present situation. This paper was prepared with the view of presenting the salient features connected with repressuring in the well-depleted oil measures of the older fields, and to show what results have already been obtained in these fields by injecting the unmarketable gas into the sands, particularly in the Midway-Sunset field in the San Joaquin Valley of California. Other projects in the older fields of the state offer some supporting data in this connection, such as the Shields Canyon and the Brea Canyon fields. Inflammability and crossing point apparatus were used to study the influence of increasing amounts oi such inerts as ash, fly-ash, pyrite, limestone and Portland cement with several pulverized bituminous coals. The results indicate that it requires large proportions of inerts to substantially suppress the ease of ignition. The ignition phase of the combustion of solid fuels has been under study periodically since 1900. With the advent of pulverized coal firing some 60 years ago, a technique now dominating the coal utilization field, the ignitibility characteristics have become increasingly important. Much of the early work was directed toward the prevention of coal dust explosions and improved mine safety rather than combustion. Many factors affecting ignitibility have been studied and numerous methods devised in an effort to measure the ignition temperature and these have been reviewed by other authors. A recent survey was made by Finney and Spicerl in 1959, so a discussion of previous work will be omitted. Despite these efforts, the initial stage of combustion, termed ignitibility, is still a little understood phenomenon. In fact, no ASTM method has been adopted for the calibration of this illusive property. The negative charges on diaphragms of quartz, tungstic oxides, stannic acid, acid dyestuffs, soaps, and glass have for a number of years been explained on the basis of chemical equilibria-a hydrogen ion or light metal ion passes into solution leaving the solid complex ion negatively charged. While there are a number of observations which indicate a proportionality between the ( potential and the streaming potential it should be recognized that all the experimental evidence thus far presented shows that if hydrogen ion concentration is kept at a constant value, electrokinetic phenomena are influenced by salts. The multivalent ions exert the greatest effect on the reduction of osmotic flow. In the interpretation of all electrokinetic data the assumption is made that the potential of the solid remains constant. That this is not true is evidenced by the values of ( potential for quartz in contact with conductivity water as reported by the several investigators and by the authors of this paper.

THE HIGHLY SPECIALIZED heavy air transport services to mining regions, such as exist in the New Guinea gold fields and in northern Canada, have been even more essential in the development of mines in Peru. Few nations have been con- fronted with greater natural obstacles to transport than has Peru, and without the plane it would have been impossible to get the machinery and supplies for the construction of power plants and mills to many of these interior mines, situated as they are over high mountain ranges, with muleback the principal means of transportation. As the mines within a district become important producers and warrant the expenditure, the mule trail is being replaced by automobile roads to connect with the railway stations and with the airports.

AN elaborate discussion under this heading formed a chapter in one of the reports made by Professor Raymond as Commissioner of Mining Statistics.* In a subsequent report- was printed a paper, by Mr. William Main, Jr., of Columbia, South Carolina, containing a theoretical investigation into the effect of the velocity of impact on the effective ditty of stamps. A visit to the Lake Superior copper region last summer suggested an inquiry into the relative efficiency and economy of the enormous steam stamps of the copper-mills, as compared with the results obtained with the cant and tappet stamps commonly used in the West. The atmospheric stamp used at the Phoenix Mill promised to add interest to the inquiry, as giving an example of unusually high speed, this stamp making 160 drops per minute. In introducing his subject Dr. Raymond makes the following remarks, which are quite apropos of the present investigation : "In considering the economical application of stamping machinery, we meet, at- the beginning, with serious difficulties in obtaining accurate data for comparison. The weight and fall of stamps vary as the shoes and dies wear out; and this may lead to a change of speed also. Moreover, defects in engines, boilers, or machinery for the transmission of power, may occasion serious losses, which cannot fairly be charged to the arrangements of the stamps proper. Again, the capacity of stamp-mills is directly dependent, in some degree, upon the nature and extent of discharge, fineness of screens, and other peculiarities of the battery. Finally the hardness and tenacity of the rock crushed varies so much that comparisons between different localities cannot be implicitly trusted. The coal industry, one of the great basic industries in the nation, plays a major role in the American economy. Coal is the principal fuel used in generating tremendous quantities of low-cost power so necessary to the nation. Two-thirds of the electrical energy and one-fourth of all energy consumed in the nation is produced from coal. Large-scale production of steel, cement, and chemicals is vitally dependent upon this natural resource. Because of extensive reserves and low mining cost, it is one of the few natural resources in which the United States is a significant exporter. During 1965 in excess of 500 million tons of coal were produced, almost 10% over the previous year; more than 50 million tons were shipped to foreign markets. The utility market gained approximately 8% during the year for a total of 242 million tons.

The basic density equation originally dericed ' to predict the increase in density of a compact of spherical particles with the progressive deformation at the points of contact has been further modified to include the yield strength of the material. This has been done by assuming that the contact areas grow to stable sizes under a fixed stress which is equal to three times the yield strength. The final equation has the form: where Do and D me the initial and final bulk densities of the compact, u is the applied pressure, and Y is the yield strength of the material. This equation was tested with the data obtained on spheres of lead, K-Monel, and sapphire. The calculated yield strength t~alues for lead and sapphire are within the range of values reported in the literature. A few of the earliest hot pressing models proposed to explain the mechanism by Murray, Livey, and williams2 and then by McClelland3 are based on a plastic flow mechanism. However, more recent investigations suggest that the overall densification process is a combination of several mechanisms, such as particle rearrangement, fragmentation, plastic flow, and stress-enhanced diffusional creep. While fragmentation and particle rearrangement are considered to be responsible for the densification in the early stages,"475 it has been concluded that the final stages of hot pressing are controlled by stress-enhanced diffusional creep.516 The manner in which the densification takes place, i.e., by fragmentation, particle rearrangement, plastic flow, or stress-enhanced diffusional creep, would depend upon the type of material, the temperature, and the stress level used during the hot-pressing experiments. Metal compacts can be expected to have a much greater contribution from plastic flow than ceramic oxides. Also, plastic flow would be a significant contributing factor to densification at high temperatures and high stresses. Most of these works, directed towards elucidation of densification mechanism, have dealt with kinetics of the process. The results of most of the authors vary from one another and they have proposed either new empirical or semiempirical equations to fit their data. The densification rate was found to vary with the type of the powder, shape and size of the powder, initial packing density of the compact, and a few other factors such as rate of heating, pressure, and so forth. Beyond the initial stages, the densification process has been considered to be as time-dependent flow, controlled by a diffusional process, e.g., Nabarro-Herring creep. Palm our, Bradley, and johnson' have attempted to use modified creep rate equations to interpret the data of densification under hot-pressing conditions. Beyond the initial stages, however, the densification would be controlled by a process depending upon the temperature, pressure, and size of the powders. It is the authors' belief that such densification cannot be exclusively controlled by a single process and so attempts should be made to study some observable phenomenon like microstructure, yield strength, and so forth. The emphasis of this work has been toward studying the densification problem from a more fundamental point of view. Some of the principal variables, like initial packing density, mode of packing, and size of the powders, have been controlled to a great extent. The total strain produced on pressure application (instantaneous) in such a case can be considered to be due to plastic and elastic deformation. The elastic component of the strain can be determined by decreasing the load to the initial value. The strain remaining then can be correlated with the contact areas produced by deformation and the corresponding applied load. In a previous paper,' the possible deformation behavior of spheres in a compact has been theoretically analyzed and experimentally tested. The change in contact area radius a relative to the particle radius R was related to the bulk density and the bulk strain for simple and systematic modes of packing. Tt was found that a density equation relating the above parameters can be represented by: where D and Do are the bulk densities of the compact at any value of a/R and a/R = 0, respectively. This basic equation should hold for any material as it was derived from geometrical considerations alone. An attempt has been made in this work to include the yield strength in the above density equation, so that a knowledge of the properties of any material can be used in predicting the densification behavior during the hot-pressing process. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATTONS The deformation of two spheres in contact under a static load can be compared to the deformation occurring between a hard spherical indentor and the flat face of a softer metal. Tt has been shown theoretically by both ~encky~ and lshlinskyg and experimentally by ~abor" that, for a material incapable of appreciable work hardening, the mean pressure required to produce plastic yielding (for deformation occurring between flat face and a hemispherical indentor) is approximately equal to three times the elastic limit, Y, of the material (in tension or compression experiments). Tabor has further observed that the same relationship is valid in the case of work-hardening materials, if the elastic limit at the edge of the indenta-

All important industries have certain basic principles in common which govern them and give them a family resemblance. In addition, each industry has a certain individuality due to some principle or principles which govern, or are accepted as governing, that industry and which is not effective in others. The customs and practices of an industry depend on these basic principles much as the corollaries follow a proposition in geometry. After the proposition is proved or is accepted as proved, the corollaries are seen to be true almost without additional evidence or proof. In many cases, the corollaries are more important in practical affairs than the proposition on which they depend. By continued application the corollaries may come to be accepted as law and the fact that their truth depends on the correctness of the fundamental proposition is forgotten or ignored. If it is discovered that an error was made in demonstrating the proposition and that the proposition is untrue, the corollaries are, in most cases at least, equally untrue. Considerable time may be required, however, to realize the fact that the corollaries have failed, particularly if they have been embodied in custom and law. For example, in the business of government the proposition that women are intellectually inferior to men was formerly considered, by most men at least, to be duly proved if not axiomatic. This propositiot was never embodied in law, but its corollaries—that the rights of the wife in property and even in her own children were inferior to the rights of the husband, and that women had no place in governmental affairs—were duly incorporated in law or so completely approved by custom that they had the effect of law. Developments of the past few decades have proved, to the satisfaction of the majority, that woman's intellectual inferiority to man had not been satisfactorily demonstrated, and that the proposition that she was inferior, although accepted for many generations, was untrue. It was not so great a shock to men to discover that this proposition was wrong as it was to find out that its corollaries were also untrue and that the laws embodying them were not good laws and were subject to repeal. Tars paper deals with the origin, definition and prevention of scabs an semifinished rolled-steel product. Mold coatings, which are considered essential in scab prevention, were found to be effective only in relation to the ingot surface of semikilled and killed steels and not necessary for the rolled product. That is to say, the scabs on ingots caused by having been cast in uncoated molds are eliminated in the soaking and rolling operations, therefore are not present on the rolled product. This fact, which is contrary to the average opinion, was established after extensive and thorough experiments had proved the ordinary conception of the origin of scabs to be incorrect. This subject may be of little or no concern to steel plants producing small ingots for the manufacture of small billets and bars, except as it may be of interest in showing why their surface troubles with scabs do not exist on the product of heats with normal pouring practice. But to the producer of large ingots to be rolled into slabs for large plates used in shipbuilding, it is a very important subject. DEFINITION OF A SCAB The generally accepted opinion is that the individual scabs present on rolled products (as shown by Fig. I) are considered to have been individual splashes on the ingot surface. This opinion was found to be incorrect. Experiments showed that there were no individual scabs on the product that had appeared as individuals on the ingot surface. The single scabs seen are either pieces of a shell that is present near the bottom of all top-cast ingots, or a veneer that may be present on any part of an ingot improperly poured, as when the stream strikes the mold wall. This definition is based on a detailed study of scabs and their characteristics in which the following have been found true: Location.- On the product of heats poured without trouble, scabs, if present, are always on the product that corresponds to the bottom end of the ingot, and usually occur in clusters, This is true whether molds are coated or not. Shape.-There is no regularity as to shape, size or thickness. It is sometimes possible to separate a few pieces and place them together, like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, indicating that at one time they had been united as one piece. If individual splashes were the origin of scabs, the foregoing would not be true. Instead, the splashes, which occur throughout the pouring of the ingots, would be present uniformly over the entire product and there would be considerable similarity in the shape and thickness of the scabs. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Our experimental work was conducted on 200-ton heats of semikilled plate steel tapped into an oval ladle 15 ft. high. IN the pear 1881, I visited San Domingo, in the interest of French capitalists, to examine and report upon certain "concessions" of gold-bearing gravel and quartz veins, on the Isabella and Jaina rivers and their tributaries. This district is periodically reported to he extraordinarily rich, and there is oast around it the glamour of the mysterious shipments of gold, credited, in romance and in more or less romantic history, to Columbus and the Spaniards of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Since considerable sums of money and several valuable lives have been lost in the unsuccessful search for its profitable mines, it seems desirable to place on record Borne of the information collected concerning the value of these famous gold fields, with the hope of facilitating the work of those who may hereafter be called on to investigate these claims, and of preventing the unnecessary waste of capital. It is needless to add that the capitalists for whom my investigations were made abandoned the enterprise they had in view,although no doubt similar schemes will be brought forward many times in the future, as they have been in the past, under the fervent advocacy of too sanguine enthusiasts. Since the time of the Spanish occupation of the Island of San Domingo, in 1497, when Columbus Found the natives wearing ornaments of gold, more or less of the precious metal has been obtained annually by washing the gold-bearing sands of several of its streams. Sulphur, even in small amounts, may often be harmful to nickel and high-nickel alloys, causing impairment of mechanical strength and destruction of malleability and ductility, as shown by Merica and Waltenberg.l,2 It may act either in the form of nonmetallic inclusions produced in the liquid state during furnacing or as reaction products resulting from its diffusion into the solid metal. In recognizing the action of this element, ability to identify its various forms by means of the microscope is often of considerable importance, especially when direct quantitative methods are inapplicable. Of the sulphur compounds associated with nickel and high-nickel alloys, the sulphides that may be found in malleable nickel, Monelt and Inconel are an important group. These sulphides were investi- gated by metallographic methods in order to provide descriptive data by which to identify them. The nominal compositions of malleable nickel, Monel and Inconel are given in Table I. The term "sulphide" is employed here in a very general sense, to designate a substance in which sulphur and one or more metallic elements are combined. The term includes any combinations of compounds and solid solutions. Method of Investigation Three groups of small laboratory melts were made, one group to represent each of the three types of alloy under investigation. Within each group, a number of ingots with a sufficient variety of chemical analyses were prepared so that the effect of each of the elements entering the complete commercial alloy could be isolated and observed. In most cases, to facilitate metallographic study by exaggerating the number and size of the resulting sulphides, somewhat greater amounts of the minor elements were added than are present in the commercial alloys. Likewise, considerably more sulphur was added than is normal, but not enough to complicate the system. Transverse sections were cut at a point one third of the distance from the butt to the head of each ingot, polished and examined with an inverted stage metallo-graph equipped with a combination polar -izing-analyzing vertical illuminator. The light source was a tungsten-mercury vapor arc lamp.

AMONG the features that make Inspiration of outstanding A interest, particularly to the engineer, is the fact that at various times it has used, as a major method of production, three more or less distinct methods of mining and three distinct methods of treating its ores. ABOUT six years ago the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. decided to investigate the possibility of extracting zinc from the ores of certain mines in the Butte district. These ores are of a complex character and contain so much iron and lead that the concentrate contains only 33 to 35 per cent. zinc. Investigations showed that while a high-grade concentrate could not be obtained by ordinary methods, such as tabling and magnetic treatment, a fair grade could be made by the Horwood process. In this method, the concentrate resulting from the flotation of all of the sulfides is given a light roast and this calcine is subjected to flotation in the presence of a large amount of sulfuric acid; the resulting concentrate contains most of the zinc and a residue contains most of the iron. The fact that the lead, copper, and silver are divided approximately equally between the zinc concentrate and the iron residue and the large consumption of acid, which ranged from 50 to 100 lb. (22 to 45 kg.) per ton of concentrates, were serious objections to this plan. The zinc recovery, moreover, was low, as a considerable percentage invariably accompanied the iron. While a profit might be made on the ores by the use of this process, it was thought that other and more promising methods might be devised. After carefully studying the field and doing some laboratory work on various processes that had been suggested, it was decided that the electrolysis of sulfate solutions was the most promising. We soon found, as have other investigators, that the only way to obtain a good zinc deposit is to have the electrolyte free from all metals more electro-negative than zinc, such as copper, cadmium, lead, arsenic, antimony, etc. Arsenic and antimony are particularly injurious, causing very poor current efficiency and small yield per horsepower when present in amounts so small as almost to defy detection-1 mg. or less per liter.

INTRODUCTION Process Control at the Ecstall Concentrator begins in the open pit at the Kidd Creek Mine. While this paper, naturally, emphasizes the instrumental and technical features of the Process Control system within the concentrator itself, it would not be complete without some mention of the selective mining methods and grade control practices at the mine, and of certain features of plant design, which are simple, but highly effective, elements of the Process Control system. The success of the entire Process Control system, from pit to concentrate load-out, owes much to the high degree of cooperation and mutual understanding among all the operating departments at Ecstall Mining Limited and to the willingness of management to accept, from the start, an overall control philosophy based upon the inter-dependence of mining and metallurgical operations. INFLUENCES OF MINERALOGY AND METALLURGY ON MINE PLANNING AND PLANT DESIGN Mineralogically, the Kidd Creek ores are fine grained and mostly very complex. Because of complex mineral associations and extensive inter-locking, very fine grinding and regrinding of middling fractions are necessary and selective flotation requires a very delicate touch. Four separate concentrates are made for shipment to copper, lead and zinc smelters. The Process Control system is tailored to the metallurgical objectives of maximum recoveries of copper, lead, zinc and silver into concentrates of optimum quality, for maximum economic returns. Numerous laboratory tests and field measurements conducted by different persons have indicated that most mine rocks behave viscoelastically rather than elastically. Hence, for an accurate and realistic design of underground structure, the time factor should be taken into account, and the theory of viscoelasticity can be used. By considering the time factor, the time-safe-strength may be used for economical design instead of liberal safety factors with design based on the elasticity theory. The deflection and moment distributions on an elastic roof slab resting on elastic pillars have already been studied.l In this chapter, the stress- strain analysis for a viscoelastic mine roof resting on pillars of the same material or on supports of different material is first considered theoretically. Viscoelastic solutions for deflections, moments, and shears are de- rived from the elastic plate theory on the basis of the elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle. The Laplace transformation technique is employed as the operational method in the mathematical treatment. The roof slab materials are represented by four different rheological models and four different loading histories are considered. The method of finite difference equations is employed for solving the partial differential equations, using FORTRAN programs to calculate roof deflections, moments, and shears. Numerical examples are given for one of the four models under two of the four loading histories with regular and staggered pillar patterns. The results are discussed in terms of the variance with time of deflections, moments, and shears as well as their variation in space due to the dimensions and configuration of the structure system. INTRODUCTION THE process of diffusion alloying of mixed powders offers attractive possibilities both commercially and experimentally. It avoids the fabrication difficulties arising from high alloy contents. Indeed, the process is facilitated by larger alloy additions. The direct formation of the part or test piece and the opportunity to perform machining operations under more favorable conditions are of no small importance. However, it is necessary to make only brief mention of the interesting features. As yet there have been few attempts to study this process in detail and to carry it to completion, if such is possible. It was intended not only to measure the intermediate and optimum magnetic properties of sintered alloys but to use magnetic testing itself as a means of following the progress of alloying under various conditions. Having established that alloys could be successfully synthesized by this technique, the opportunity was taken to study the magnetic properties of several alloys of iron and silicon which had hitherto been too difficult to prepare in suitable test piece form, While avoiding some of the difficulties inherent in the fabrication of alloys by orthodox methods, the diffusion alloying process introduces a few of its own. The first of these is the evaluation of the approach to homogenization. In recent years some notable contributions have been made to this question, but considerable uncertainty remains in its definition and evaluation. This work has concerned itself with further study of this problem and it is hoped that more light has been shed on it, The second of these difficulties arises from the presence of porosity. It is inevitable that in the consolidation of a loose bulk of powder, there should remain some voids unless extremely high pressures are repeatedly applied. It was therefore of importance to investigate their effect on magnetic properties. Recently this effect has been studied and certain predictions made of its behavior. It is believed that the experimental results presented here provide a sound substantiation of the theoretical treatment. The attempt has been made to synthesize five alloys of the iron-silicon system and three each of the iron-nickel and iron-cobalt systems. A series of experiments was also conducted on some of these alloys to test their susceptibility to heat treatment. Some unfortunate experiences have provided opportunity to report data on the deleterious effects of nitrogen on magnetic properties when present as a contaminant in protective atmospheres.
