The processing strategy for the effective separation of bitumen from low grade (<l0 weight percent bitumen) Utah tar sands by a hot water process differs significantly from that used for the processing of high grade (> 10 weight percent bitumen) Utah tar sands. Excellent separations (coefficient of separation = 0.9) can be achieved for high grade Utah tar sands by intense hot water digestion followed by a modified froth flotation step. Such a technique is ineffective for low grade tar sands. In order to change the characteristics of the low grade tar sand an attempt was made to enrich the bitumen content of the feed to greater than 10 weight percent by recycle of bitumen concentrate to the digestion stage. However, the quality of the separation was not improved under these circumstances. Similarly feed enrichment by heat treating the low grade feed with recycled concentrate prior to digestion did not improve the separation. More successful separations of low grade Utah tar sands were finally achieved by modification of the viscosity of the low grade bitumen with controlled addition of diluent. These results of the hot water separation tests and variations in the quality of separation are interpreted in terms of the physical properties of the bitumen and the surface bonding forces operative at the bitumen-sand interface.

A MARKED peculiarity of most of the smelting-works of the Far West is the looseness with which accounts of the operations are kept. Indeed, probably over half of the works do not keep any detailed accounts at all, the yearly gross statement of profit or loss being considered sufficient for all purposes. The reasons for this must apparently be sought in the as yet unsettled state of all business relations, and in the deplorable fact that only in isolated cases educated metallurgists are in charge of the smelting-works. Continual and regular assays of the ores, by-products, and slags, are almost unknown, so that it is impracticable to ascertain, even approximately, the losses in the smelting processes. Of cases where regular accounts are kept of the quantities of ore smelted, of the composition of charges, and of the fuel consumed, I know only two or three. Under these circumstances it is extremely difficult to collect figures which cover the operations for a considerable length of time, and which are so valuable for the metallurgist, who wishes to get an insight into the economy of smelting operations, as shown by practice. Figures obtained by personal observation, which can of course cover only the brief space of the visit of the travelling metallurgist, must, therefore, be made to replace the more valuable data. The writer has had occasion, during the last and the preceding summer, to visit the larger number of the Western lead-smelting works, and offers, in the following pages, such data relating to the economy of lead-smelting in the blast furnace at various works, as he has been able to obtain. The only object in doing so is to place these figures on record, so that they may be from time to time supplemented with other data, which are now wanting. I. In discussing the taxation of mining enterprises, it is desirable to place limits of both time and space on the field of discussion. For our present purposes it seems best to limit consideration to taxation of mining enterprises in the United States, and to further limit the subject to taxation under approximately current conditions. Even with such limitations the field is large enough, since in this country we have, in most regions, a number of taxing powers; so that state, county and village tax systems must ordinarily be considered, in addition to our national or federal taxes. Nor is it possible, in discussing United States mineral taxes of today, altogether to pass by similar taxation in earlier periods, or related systems in other countries. It is perhaps hardly necessary to remind you, at the outset, that each age in the history of the world displays its own system of public revenues, and that the taxation systems of today are everywhere different from those of older times. Theories as to taxation have varied according to the economic basis of the society in which they were formulated, and our ideas as to justice in taxation fluctuate with changes in social conditions. The word taxation is used in a fairly definite sense today, but you have only to glance into the history of taxation to find that the paragenesis of ore deposits is a fairly simple subject as compared to the paragenesis of taxation systems.

IN the production of single crystals by the Bridg-man method of solidification from the melt in vacuum at a crucible lowering rate of 0.25 in. per hr, a cellular structure was frequently observed in copper and copper-base alloys at the terminal surface of the as-cast crystals (i.e., the surface representing the last portion of the crystal to solidify). The geometrical form of this structure varied from crystal to crystal, but, in general, could be classified as either hexagonal or quadrilateral. Fig. 1 shows examples of this cellular structure, which is similar to that reported by Buergerl and, more recently, by Pond and Kessler&apos; and Rutter and Chalmers. In the micrographs of Figs. lb and c, the cubic structure in the alloy crystals is obscured somewhat by excessive surface evaporation in the final stages of solidification. X-ray orientation studies indicate that the traces outlining the various geometrical forms correspond to octahedral planes, which are the planes of greatest reticular density in the face-centered cubic lattice. It would appear from this that the view first propounded by Bravais,4 that the surface energies and normal growth velocities of the different crystal planes are inversely proportional to their reticular densities, applies to this cellular structure, since those surviving are the planes of greatest atomic density. Thus, the observed variation in the geometrical form of this structure in crystals of different orientation is readily understandable from the distribution of the (111) planes in the standard {111}, (1101, and (1001 stereographic projections. Depending upon whether the crystal axis (i.e., the direction of crystallization) coincides with a <111>, <111>, or <100> direction, the cellular structure viewed from a surface perpendicular to the crystal axis will consist of a network of regular hexagons, skewed hexagons (with interfacial angles of 110" and 125"), or cubes, respectively. It follows, moreover, that off-orientations from these principal directions will yield modifications of these three basic geometric configurations. In this connection, it is interesting to note that the bounding planes of the hexagonal structure observed in tin by Rutter and Chalmers3 showed no preferred orientation.

The anthracite industry can be divided into two parts—the underground, or mining, and the outside, or preparation or manufacture. To understand recoveries in the two branches, some of the history of the industry and the changes that have taken place in the past century should be considered. It is a long step from 1807, when 55 tons were produced in the Wyoming field, to 1917, the peak year, when 80,841,223 tons were shipped to market from all the fields. In 1820, the Lehigh Coal Co., the predecessor of the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co., shipped 365 tons in arks down the canal of the Lehigh Navigation Co. The Schuylkill field was not opened until 1822, when 1480 tons were shipped. The Wyoming field really became a producer in 1829, when 7000 tons were mined and shipped. It is well to note, at this time, the passing of the Coleraine colliery after a life of 88 years; in collieries of this age will be found the romance of the region, as well as the history of the changes to date. Mining Methods In the Lehigh region, the first coal came from the old quarry mines at Summit Hill; a little later the open-cut workings, or quarries, east of Jeansville, and near Beaver Meadow were opened. In the Wyoming field, it was necessary to resort to underground mining almost from the very first. Ashmead1 has described the changes in outside preparation methods, dl tending to increase the percentage of coal shipped to market. A description from the days when the lump coal was raked and screened out in the quarries or mines, to the modern breaker of today, shipping as high as 6000 tons of at least eight sizes of coal in an 8-hr. day is a very interesting story. Each size is a step toward increasing the yield from the property. With the belief that the supply was inexhaustible, the early mining was conducted with the thought of getting the maximum amount of coal on first mining. The superintendent was his own foreman and engineer.

Gouverneur Talc produces a dry mineral filler from the tremolite talc rocks located near Gouverneur, New York. The raw material for this rock powder is a silicate rock and dust is controlled by water sprays whenever it becomes a problem underground. In the milling operation, there are some nine baghouse-type dust collectors which are utilized for the control of dust created in the crushing and grinding process. These collectors have been installed over a period of years since 1947 and are assigned to specific areas where the particle sizing of the dust can be returned to the plant circuit or product involved at the point of collection. It has been found very advantageous to mount most of these collectors on the top of the mill building and packhouses where the return of the dust can be accomplished by a gravity feed. In the years of effort involved in efficient control of dust generated in the plant, many things have been learned in the construction of ducts for control valves. The company has found useful such things as grasshopper legs for interconnecting silos with similar products, the elimination of fiat dust ducts, cleaning cyclones for coarse dust or heavy loadings, refractory linings for cyclones and certain duct areas, and the avoidance of square intersections when diverting or combining ducts. Operating cost records indicate that collectors handling the finest dust have the least expense. Operating costs on high-temperature dusts generally run higher than other types of material collected. Experience further indicates that the multiple cyclone-type collectors can provide a low cost and efficient way of removing hot dusts from process air streams before the introduction of the material into a baghouse. High moisture conditions and cold northern climates have been found to combine and create conditions under which baghouses can not efficiently function as dust collectors. Gouverneur Talc feels that its several dust collection systems have been a considerable maintenance expense but well worth the cost when it came to safeguarding the employees&apos; health and preventing air pollution.

INTRODUCTION Leasing has become a major industry in many countries because of the advantages it affords. Whilst the accounting, legal and tax treatment of leasing varies from country to country, there is far more similarity than difference. The general approach to the subject is largely the same. This paper looks to the basic financial considerations in the decision to lease or buy. TYPES OF LEASES Before embarking upon the subject, it would seem appropriate to define a "lease". A lease may be defined as: "an agreement granting one party the right to use, for a specified period of time, property owned by another party in return for a series of payments of rental by the user to the owner&apos;&apos;. Ownership, of course, generally entitles the owner to unrestricted use of the asset over its useful life in contrast to a lease which gives the lessee use over a limited period. The distinction between the status of owner and a lessee often is fairly small. In this case we are dealing with what is generally termed a "finance lease". A finance lease is one which substantially transfers the risks and benefits of ownership from the legal owner to the lessee. For example, a finance lease would exist where the lessee enters into a lease of an asset for most of its useful life and has an option to buy the asset at the end of the lease for a price which takes cognisance of the rentals already paid. Where a lease does not substantially transfer the benefits and risks of ownership to the lessee, i.e. those benefits and risks remain with the owner and lessor, the lease is termed an "operating lease" and is an agreement for the renting and usage by the lessee of an asset owned by the lessor for a limited period. An example of an operating lease might be where a tenant leases a building for a defined period say 6 years with the rent and occupancy subject to renegotiation at the end of the lease term. The economic consequences of the distinction between a finance and an operating lease is very important. With a finance lease, the lessee has a de facto economic interest in the asset and the alternative to a finance lease is some form of purchase; with an operating lease, the lessee does not have a basic economic interest in the asset and consequently a comparison with a purchase option involves far more than simply a funding comparison. Some of the principal differences between finance and operating leases can be summarised as follows: (a) finance leases: -the risks and benefits of ownership are substantially transferred to the lessee; -the lessor normally recovers his investment during the term of the lease; -the lessor in entering into the transaction is relying more on the creditworthiness of the lessee than the underlying value of the asset; - the lease is either non-cancellable or a large penalty will apply for unilateral cancellation by the lessee; (b) operating leases -the risks and benefits of ownership remain essentially with the lessor; -the lease rental income would not normally cover the recovery of the lessor&apos;s investment; -the lessor evaluates his risk in terms of the underlying value of the assets;

DIATOMACEOUS earth occurs in deposits widely distributed throughout the nation. The chief producing areas are in the Western States, where many high-grade deposits are known. Eastern deposits of diatomite are unsatisfactory for many purposes either because of impurity or because of the extremely fine particle size. Eastern users of diatomite, on the whole, must pay for transportation of the material from the west coast. The freight rate is necessarily high because of the great bulk of the diatomite. A satisfactory process of purifying the diatomaceous earths of Maryland and Virginia, which are unsuited for wide use only because of impurities, should be of value to eastern users. In the past, benefication of diatomite by wet processes has been limited to classification or sedimentation for the removal of sand from diatoms. Calcination with salt is used to produce a white diatomite when iron is present in the impurities, and small amounts of clay are rendered inactive in the process. No treatment has been developed whereby a large proportion of clay can be removed from a low-grade diatomaceous earth to give a diatomite of very high purity. In August 1937 the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Dr. R. C. Williams, of Baltimore, undertook the problem of purifying low-grade Maryland diatomite by Froth flotation. Work was done at the Eastern Experiment Station, College Park. Unless otherwise stated, the crude diatomite used was from the Patuxent River deposits near Dunkirk. This material, consisting of roughly one-third each or clay, quartz sand and diatoms, was representative of the usual low-grade marine diatomite found in the Coastal Plain Miocene beds of Maryland and Virginia and sporadically in other Atlantic coast states. As received, it contained 50 to 60 per cent moisture and probably had been wet since its formation.

In "Sorting Before Sizing " (a paper first announced at the Pittsburgh meeting, February, 1896, but delayed in preparation and now presented at the present meeting) it is shown that if slime-tables are to do their best work on slimes below 0.5 mm. or 0.05 inch in diameter, they must be carefully sorted or classified, and fed to a series of tables suitably adjusted to the different slime-sorts. The reason is that the coarser and finer slime-sorts require respectively different adjustments of the tables. Hence, if the two are fed together upon a table which has, as nearly as may be, average adjustments, fine galena, for example, will go into the tails, or coarse quartz into the heads, or both—losses which could have been largely prevented if the slime had been carefully sorted and each sort sent to its own slime-tables. As indicated in the paper just mentioned, the present tendency in this country is generally to do away with slime-sorting or "classification," and simply to take the overflow from the hydraulic classifier and divide it among the tables by means of

With greater effort being devoted to the discovery of new oil and gas reserves and a consequent increase in bottom hole pressures due to greater drilling depths, the phase relationships of hydrocarbon fluids at pressures above 10,000 lb psi are becoming increasingly important. The present paper discusses the results of research with a windowed cell on a methane-Kensol 16 system to pressures of 25,000 Ib psi and temperatures to 260°F. Kensol 16 is a commercial high narrow-boiling-range oil. It is shown that for the temperature range of 60 °F to 260 °F, this particular system exists in two phases to pressures of approximately 14,000 lb psi, and data are presented giving the relative amounts of liquid and vapor phase? coexisting under these conditions. Partial phase diagrams are shown for six different mixtures of methane and Kensol 16, three of which include the critical region. In contrast to mixtures composed of substances of fairly close volatility. critical opalescence was noted for as much as 200°F of the critical temperature. The critical locus of the methane-Kensol 16 system was estimated and the conventional pressure-composition and temperature-composition diagrams were prepared. From these, the equilibrium vaporization factors for methane and Kensol 16 were estimated for temperatures from 60 °F to 700 °F and to pressures above 12,000 lb psi. The relations of this study to petroleum production problems and other phase equilibria research are discussed. A new correlation of blast penetration in model and operating blast furnaces is presented which overcomes objections to prevzous correlations. It is shown that the tuyere diameter is only of small importance in determining the magnitude of the penetration. The data from operating furnaces correlate satisfactorily with the data from models whose cross section is a segment of a circle. A bubble-shaped gas space called a "raceway" normally exists in front of the nose of a blastfurnace tuyere. The periphery or "wall" of the raceway is well defined and is composed of densely packed charge particles. The blast. issuing as a jet from the tuyere, entrains gas from the raceway, in the usual manner of a jet, as it flows to the opposing wall. There it divides and flows back around the walls to be entrained once more. The blast must, of course, eventually leave the raceway and pass up through the charge column, but before it does it may, on the average, make several circuits of the kind described and in doing so it carries with it charge particles, which, because of their fast and circulating motion, suggested the name of "raceway". A fuller description of the raceway may be found elsewhere."&apos; Here it is only necessary to mention, in addition, the measurement which characterizes its size. If an iron bar is pushed through the opened peepsight of a tuyere, .as far as it will go with ease, it will be stopped by the relatively impenetrable opposing raceway wall arid the distance that the bar has been pushed from the tuyere nose is called the "penetration". This measurement may be of practical importance and has; been the subject, with considerable success, of several attempts at correlation with other variables2-5 as stated in the next section. There is still, however, a serious objection to the most recent correlation,3 which is overcome by the correlation proposed in this paper. It will be shown that the objection is not trivial, in that the new correlation will attribute considerably different importance to the variables affecting the magnitude of the penetration. The data to be treated were made available by Wagstaff and are the same as those used in his correlation. They include measurements taken on small models, in which a cold air blast was used and no combustion occurred, and they also include data from operating blast furnaces at Wheeling and Fairless. The information from the blast furnaces will be shown to be in substantial agreement with those models whose plan views are segments of a circle and which are thus like segments of a blast furnace. First, Wagstaff&apos;s most recent correlation3 will be discussed and the objection will be given. Then the new correlation will be developed and its implications considered. CORRELATION OF J. B. Abstract-This paper describes the results of a comparative study of the geostatistical ore reserve estimation method over three conventional methods; the polygon method, the inverse of the distance squared (IDS) method, and ELIP which is similar to IDS. Each method was evaluated on its ability to accurately predict individual block grades for one bench of the Pima mine, located near Tucson, Ariz. Results at the Pima mine indicate that the geostatistical method is no better or worse in predicting block grades and total tonnage than the ELIP or IDS methods. In contrast, the polygon method is clearly inferior. All of the methods would have given better results if geology had been included in the block model. At already producing mines ELIP or IDS may be good choices since they involve substantially less cost in computer time. For prospective or new properties the geostatistical model is more attractive due to its ability to construct confidence limits on the estimates.

A critical path approach is presented for the problem of mine ventilation networks where regulators and fans are employed to control the airflow distribution. The problem is a classic one arising in mine ventilation planning. By identifying the analogy between the network for controlled flow and that for critical path method (CPM), the applications of the well known CPM technique to the ventilation problem become straightforward. The mathematical formulation of the problem is presented and the solutions are illustrated with examples. The cutset operation is introduced and employed for obtaining alternative solutions. The effects of booster fans on the total air power of the ventilation network are also discussed.

This paper deals with an experimental study in the use of a preagglomerated burden as a means of increasing the production of sinter. The effect of a wide range of sinter burden was studied, including concentrates produced by a flotation process. Some of the important characteristics of a sinter bed are discussed along with the strength and reducibility of the sintered product. In recent years the use of sinter in blast furnaces has become increasingly important across the country—largely because of the demand for more hot iron from existing plant capacity and the increasing amount of fines in the burden materials available to the blast-furnace operator. ALTHOUGH a number of articles appeared during the war advocating the use of cadmium in lead-tin solders, very little information of value can be found in the literature regarding the properties of solders containing cadmium. In most of the published articles the cadmium seems to have been considered merely as a partial substitute for tin in a tin-lead alloy rather than as an essential constituent of a ternary alloy. The primary object of the substitution of cadmium for tin was to lessen the amount of tin required, at a time when the latter was scarce and high-priced, and thus to produce a cheaper solder. While this object was accomplished, the new properties resulting from a change from a binary lead-tin alloy to a ternary lead-tin-cadmium alloy were not given proper consideration in many cases. For the past few years, the American Smelting & Refining Co. has been marketing a very considerable amount of cadmium in the form of lead-tin-cadmium alloys for use as solders for certain special purposes, and the successful use of these solders suggested that if more extensive knowledge were available concerning the properties of lead-tin-cadmium alloys of various compositions their field of usefulness might be materially extended. The investigation described in the present paper was undertaken to obtain this information and, by means of tests under conditions approaching those of practical use, to determine the suitability of cadmium solders for various purposes. CHARACTERISTICS AND REQUIREMENTS OF SOLDERS IN GENERAL General Physical Properties.-When cast into bars, solder should present a smooth and bright appearance free from oxide inclusions and bubbles. Ductility should be as great as possible without sacrificing tensile strength, and vice versa. Hardness and specific gravity are not of any great importance. Melting Characteristics.-The melting or solidification range is important. This statement applies both to the extent of the range and to the actual temperature at which complete solidification occurs. A rather narrow solidification range is desirable in soft solders in order that solidification may take place quickly. The author maintains that selectivity in flotation depends in part on differences in rates of flotation. The rate of flotation should be directly proportional to the frequency of particle-bubble collisions. In this paper, it is suggested that floatable particles of the mineral must be distinguished from nonfloatable particles. Success in flotation is entirely a matter of selectivity. All minerals can be made to float. The problem is to make one mineral float and leave the others in the tails. For a typical ore, with all minerals naturally hydro-philic, a collector which is adsorbed by only one mineral and not at all by the others would give perfect separations. The hydrophobic, collector-coated mineral would separate cleanly from the remaining minerals. In practice, no such highly specific reagents are known. All standard collectors adsorb on most minerals to some extent, and selectivity then becomes a matter of extent of adsorption rather than adsorption on some minerals and not on others. Flotation is therefore a compromise process: if enough reagent is used to float all the desired mineral, the concentrate will be low grade; conversely, high grade concentrates can be attained only at low recovery. With many minerals coated with collector to varying degrees, selectivity appears to depend in part on each mineral floating at a different rate. The study of flotation kinetics is therefore a basic requirement to quantitative understanding of the process. The basic advantage of lighter structural weight is obvious; reduction of dead load with retention of equivalent strength affords the possibility of increasing the live load, or if this is not desirable or necessary it makes feasible a reduction in size of structural steel members and corresponding savings in other phases of construction. Among the weight-reducing materials and practices rapidly gaining favor are the use of light-weight patented insulating board to replace back-up tile or units, particularly in home construction; introduction of aluminum alloys to replace steel for many purposes; manufacture of porous brick, the use of which materially reduces the weight of masonry walls and partitions; and the use of self-rising vesicular concrete, diatomite and sawdust tile, porous gypsum, or gypsum tile for nonload-bearing partitions and walls. Even building accessories are being designed to save weight and space; one of the most striking examples of this is improved radiator construction. Concrete technique is keeping pace with the rest of the industry. Burned shale aggregates now available in many sections of the country will make concrete weighing only 100 lb. per cubic foot, saving roughly 35 per cent. in weight and sacrificing none of the strength of a rock-sand mix. It may be more expensive, but actual experience has shown that the saving in dead load will effect a reduction in structural steel which in many instances will more than offset the increased cost of the aggregate. The vesicular nature of most light-weight aggregates gives the concrete especially good insulating, fireproofing and soundproofing properties; yet absorption is comparatively low. Strangely enough, however, the increased use of light-weight aggregates appears to have augmented the demand for ordinary aggregates in concrete construction rather than to have decreased it. Light-weight aggregates have widened the field for concrete structures and, since the producers do not attempt to recommend the use of their material except where weight or other special properties are important factors, impetus- has been given to sales of other aggregates.
