A restricted ternary system made up of n-pentane, tetralin, and a purified bitumen was investigated at 70, 160, and 220 °F. Most of the experimental observations were at atmospheric pressure or at 200 psi." However, some experimental measurements were carried out at a pressure of approximately 8000 psi. It was found that the purified bitumen was precipitated from its solution or dispersion in tetralin by the addition of n-pentane and that the separation occurred at lower weight fractions of n-pentane at the lower temperatures. The bitumen-tetralin solutions show some colloidal characteristics at temperatures below 160 °F when near compositions at which the bitumen separates as a solid phase. At states remote from the phase boundaries and at temperatures above 160 °F these characteristics become less evident. Under these latter circumstances the mixtures tend to follow the behavior of true solutions, particularly in regard to the approach to heterogeneous equilibrium. An increase in pressure appears to increase the solubility of bitumen in tet-ralin-n-pentane solutions. This effect is more pronounced at temperatures above 160 °F than at lower temperatures. INTRODUCTION Asphaltic phases of plastic or solid nature have appeared in numerous instances during the recovery of petroleum from underground reservoirs. Such depositions occurring underground appear to have caused adverse production histories for particular wells or zones. Because of this field experience, it is desirable to understand the factors which influence the formation or separation of the asphaltic phases from petroleum. The problem is unusually complex because the number of true components involved is very large and the details of the phase behavior encountered are difficult to ascertain experimentally. The literature relating to asphalts, asphaltines, and bitumen is voluminous and widespread.' Only those references which are directly pertinent to the work at hand are cited. The separation of an asphaltic phase, hereinafter called bitumen? from naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures has been the subject of several investigations.2'3'4'5'6 It has been found that as many as four phases4 may be produced from a crude oil by the solution of a natural gas and propane at a pressure of 1500 psi and a temperature of 70 °F. The separation of bitumen from such naturally occurring mixtures results in at least one liquid phase which is substantially free of high molecular weight components.³ The influence of the solution of lighter hydrocarbons on the separation of bitumen from a Santa Fe Springs crude oil has been investigated. The results indicate that in the case of the methane-crude oil system, the quantity of plastic or solid phase separated reaches a maximum between 0.14 and 0.19 weight fraction methane and then decreases until negligible at higher weight fractions of methane. Similiar behavior was encountered in the case of mixtures of ethane and crude oil. The decrease in the quantity of the solid phase with an increase in the weight fraction of the lighter component appears to result from the formation of an additional liquid phase6 in which the bitumen is relatively soluble. The formation of this additional phase probably occurs at a weight fraction of methane close to that at which the quantity of separated solid reaches a maximum. A comparison of the deposition of bitumen in the field with the separation of asphalts from lubrication oil has been made' and apparently the phenomena are similar. The phase behavior of bitumen also appears to be comparable to that of coal tar."' The chemical and physical characteristics of asphalts and bitumen have been the subject of extended investigations which have been reviewed in some detail by Katz.¹º The conclusion was reached that the dispersion of bitumen in a number of organic liquids was not entirely colloidal since it was impossible to isolate individual dispersed particles even with the electron microscope. However, the evidence appeared to indicate that at states close to phase boundaries the extent of the dispersion of the phases influenced the equilibrium to a greater extent than is encountered in many simpler systems. From earlier study of field samples it became apparent that the phase behavior of bitumen-hydrocarbon systems was unusually complex. It was difficult to characterize in detail the phase behavior involved in naturally occurring hydrocarbon systems, even after a relatively extended investigation. For this reason, the study of a somewhat simpler system which still behaved in a similar manner became desirable. Three major constituents were necessary as-follows: a bituminous solid, a liquid constituent which was a reasonably good solvent, and a constituent in which bitumen was largely insoluble. A sam-

Anthracite, as sent to market, comes under three general terms of description: characteristics, source and size. Anthracite is generally classified as white ash, red ash, or Lykens Valley. The white ash coals are sometimes further described as "hard" or "free-burning." Lehigh white ash would come under the former description and Shamokin white ash under the latter. As a rule, it may be said that the nearer the origin of the coal to the western extremity of the anthracite region, the softer and more free-burning it is. Indeed, for many years the coal from Trevorton, at the western tip of the Middle Western field, was classified as "semianthracite" in the shipment reports. Lykens Valley coal is always a red ash coal, with a higher volatile content than the general run of anthracite, and consequently free-burning. The name does not exclusively indicate the neighborhood in which the coal is dug, but rather refers to the beds from which it is obtained. These beds lie, not above the Pottsville conglomerate, as is the rule, but encased in it. The extreme eastern limit of the Lykens Valley beds would seem to be about Tremont, in Schuylkill County, and the Natalie mine, near Mount Carmel. There are, of course, traces of these beds farther to the east, but they do not seem to be workable. There are as many as six of the Lykens Valley measures found in the conglomerate at some points, but to a large extent they are unworkable. Whether this coal is obtained in the Lykens Valley proper, where the beds were first identified, or from the Shamokin Valley, it is always Lykens Valley coal, and it has long been considered a premium coal, especially desirable for domestic use, particularly when a quick, hot kitchen fire is desired. Coals are, of course, frequently marketed under special names—Jeddo, Scranton, Kingston, Old Company Lehigh, Famous Reading, Lacka-wanna, etc.—which, of course, have the trade significance which their producers and vendors have built up. COAL is the basis upon which the activities of the industrial nations of the world rest today. In order that the coal industry may bee restored to a reasonably healthy condition, it is essential that both the operator and the miner should understand that they are directly concerned and that their selfish interests demand that they take an active, intelligent, self-sacrificing view of the entire situation and do their part in restoring and repairing the economic structure. Foreign credits, foreign debts, unstable exchanges, destroyed markets, and inability through lack of credit to carry on as before, all require our attention and cooperation. DEEP CONCERN AS TO FUTURE There is deep concern as to the future and a realiza-tion on the part of some of these leaders of industry that they will have to sacrifice their personal time, away from their desks and the details of business, in order to cooperate with other groups in studying the situation and endeavoring to find the best method of utilizing their knowledge in improving conditions and averting further disaster. It is most unfortunate for the country and for labor itself that the labor chiefs are blind to these necessities, and hostile to every effort to secure their cooperation in rebuilding prosperity.

Slurry transportation of coarse coal from the mining face to the preparation plant has proved successful in a West Virginia underground mine. Coal has been pumped from the mining section for several months. The system is currently being provided with the flexible link to the face to allow for continuous transportation. Some future plans for coal mines and projections for broader applications of the transportation method are given.

FROM the time of its organization down to 1917, a period of more than eighty years, Phelps, Dodge & Co. was seldom involved in what could be called a major labor difficulty. Behind this remarkable record lay both a philosophy and its practical application. The philosophy was an attitude toward society called the Golden Rule. That philosophy had been a living principle in the lives of the founders of the company, Anson Phelps, Daniel James, and William E. Dodge. Their successors, William E. Dodge, Jr., and Daniel Willis James, accepted the same philosophy. Dr. James Douglas governed his life by it. All of these men and their families had given tangible expression to that conviction in benefactions of great magnitude and variety-churches, hospitals, educational institutions, libraries, missionary undertakings, and other organizations for human betterment, such as the Young Men's and Young Women's Christian Associations, and the development of model communities about their mills and factories. According to the best standards of their generation, they had sought to improve the condition of labor,

An etching technique.has been used to investigate the dislocation structure of deformed @-brass single crystals. Isolated single ended pileups have been observed, and it is shown that, in certain cases, the configurations of such pileups agree with theoretical predictions. Many discrete pileups within heavily deformed regions have also been detected and the influence of surrounding dislocations on these groups are reported and discussed. Divergences between the experimental and theoretical spacings in the isolated pileups and the origin of the stress maintaining the pileups are discussed. THE spatial configuration of a linear array of identical dislocations has been evaluated theoretically by Eshelby, Frank, and Nabarro.' Of particular interest is the equilibrium spacing of a series of dislocations under a uniform shear sti-ess when the leading dislocation is held fixed in the lattice; such an array is termed a single ended pileup. Eshelby, Frank, and Nabarro' found that an explicit analytical solution to the problem of n dislocations in a pileup is not possible, but they were able to derive approximate formulae applicable under various limiting conditions. An alternative method of determining the equilibrium configuration was proposed by Leibfried and Leibfried and Haasen in which the discrete dislocations are replaced by a continuous dislocation density. This technique was used by Head and Louat to solve in first approximation, a number of problems of particular interest, eg., single and double ended pileups. Head has also solved numerically a number of specific configurations involving up to six dislocations. Recently Kuhlmann-Wilsdorf has obtained numerical solutions for single-ended pileups containing between three and seventy dislocations, thus making possible a comparison between appropriate experimental results and accurate theoretical values. The considerable use of the pileup concept in theories of plastic flow has stimulated a number of attempts to observe such arrays experimentally. There is of course considerable intrinsic value in revealing an isolated pileup because a direct check on the elastic theory of dislocations then becomes possible. The only technique generally applicable for studying pileups in bulk metal specimens is selective etching of the point of emergence of individual dislocations. British Columbia is enjoying a period of sustained high-level activity in all aspects and sectors of its mining industry. The total value of mineral production for 1962 was in excess of $229 million. This was the greatest total value attained for any year to date, exceeding the previous record year of 1956 by more than $40 million. It appears reasonable to expect that value of production for 1963, stimulated by increased production attained during the year, and by improved metal prices for some of the major products, will be substantially in excess of that recorded for 1962. Elsewhere in this issue appears a detailed report of prospecting and exploration activity in the Province. For the purposes of this review it is sufficient to state that the level of prospecting and exploration activity during the past several years has been greater than at any previous time and that there does not appear to be any slackening in activity or interest.

FROM its inception, a limestone quarry or mine should be under the direction of a capable engineer. Before it becomes a reality, he should outline the future results, plan the most economical methods for moving the materials and the most efficient equipment, and pilot the undertaking along the narrow pathway of success, avoiding the pitfalls of uneconomical production and the precipitous walls of scanty profits. Inspection of successful limestone properties shows that all have had difficult engineering problems, the solution of which have required keen engineering ability. In approaching a subject of this nature, it is logical to follow the progress of the limestone operation from its inception to the end, as reflecting the engineering required. There are four major divisions: Investigation, equipment, development, and operation.

This paper outlines the geophysical investigation of the area covering the D arrow salt dome, Louisiana. Surveys with the refraction seismograph and torsion balance failed to disclose the dome, but reflection dip shooting was successful and was confirmed by later drilling. Introduction The D arrow salt dome and oil field lies in western Ascension Parish, Louisiana, on the outside of a sharp bend and on the east bank of the Mississippi River. The dome occurs about 30 miles south of Baton Rouge and 80 miles northwest of New Orleans. Its geology, shape and structure have been ably described in detail by Carroll E. Cook' and, except for the general features, will not be repeated here. The purpose of this paper is to record some of the interesting and pertinent geophysical data contributing to the discovery of the dome and eventually the oil field. The salt dome is circular in outliie and comes to within about 4625 it. of the surface. At this depth the diameter of the salt plug is approximately 4800 it. The dome has only a thin cap rock of less than 75 ft. Some oil has been found and is being produced in Miocene sands above the cap rock, but most of the field's production comes from a narrow ring of wells around the east and south flanks of the dome. Producing horizons on the flank are found at 5670 to 5840 ft. in the Miocene and 6890 to 6985 ft., 7028 to 7060 ft. and 8260 to 8270 ft. in the Oligocene. The deepest well that has been drilled is the Humble Oil and Refining Company's Community B-5, on the south flank of the structure, which reached a depth of 10,013 feet. The size and shape of the field and the area of production are indicated on Fig. I. The lie showing the area of production encloses all wells now producing and all abandoned producers, both on the top and flank of the dome. This line of production is shown on all subsequent geophysical maps as a direct means of comparing the early geophysics to later drilling development. Darrow dome occurs on the low, flat flood plain of the Mississippi River; it is protected from flood overflow by high artificial levees. The rich loamy soil supports a high degree of cultivation, principally sugar cane. Drainage is secured by many small canals and the water table of the area is at or near the surface. These particular conditions of topography, drainage and top soil greatly influenced the early geophysical picture, and the influence was always unfavorable.

THERE are regularly manufactured in the eleven Bessemer steel rail mills of the United States, 119 patterns* of steel rails, of 27 different weights per yard. This list does not include patterns which, although still largely inn use, are regarded by experts as obsolete, and which would swell the number to nearly 300; nor does it include all, the patterns for which rolls are kept on hand to fill a possible demand; nor does it include extra pattern,- rolled in one finishing groove by opening or closing the rolls so as to get different weights with the same contours. The list embraces only those separate patterns which are subject to current orders. How thoroughly modern these patterns are, is shown by the fact that of the whole 119, there are but five patterns of conspicuously bad shape; all the rest more or less completely illustrate the standard features,-a heavy bead,. light web and flanges, and a good angle :to hold the fish-plate. Sixty-two per cent. of the patterns have the "Chanute" head, which was not designed until 1874.† Sixty-four per cent. of the 119 patterns are embraced under five weights per yard,; three only of these vary from standard type; there am thus 76 patterns, all of them modern and standard, to represent five different weights, for which five patterns would perfectly answer. Of the 60-lb. rails, there is only one of the pear-head type, while a dozen of the bevelled head templets cannot be distinguished from each other * From all the works 188 patterns were sent to me as standard. Of these I found 119 different shapes and 69 duplicates. † Since this paper was read I have seen at the Bethlehem Iron. Works the templet of a 68-pound Lehigh Valley rail, with the bevelled head, usually called the "Chanute" head, and marked "Templet of 1872." This is shown on Plate II. I learn that iron rails, with bevelled heads, were rolled at Bethlehem prior to 1870.

UNTIL June, 1868, it had not been attempted, either in this country or abroad, to manufacture by mechanical means, from anthracite coal-dust, artificial fuel for domestic use. Several attempts had been made to utilize coal-waste by converting it into a fuel for manufacturing purposes, but none of the processes were original, and they were merely applications of the well-known European processes and machinery, slightly modified by American ingenuity and mechanical skill. With one exception all those attempts have been failures. The great difficulty in the application of European processes and machinery has always been the limited production, and the excessive cost of the manufactured product, as compared with the cost of mining and preparing the ordinary anthracite coal for the market. The only serious and intelligent attempt to manufacture, on a large scale, artificial fuel for manufacturing purposes, has been made by the Anthracite Fuel Company, whose works are erected at Fort Ewen, near Rondout, New York. This company, organized under the auspices of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, had to go through the usual course of difficulties, breakages, and disappointments, which seems to be the lot of every new industry. Thanks, however, to the energy and perseverance of Mr. L. L. Crounsse, a gentleman of means, from Washington, D. C., the enterprise succeeded, and it is to-day established on a permanent basis. In order to increase the production, and to reduce its cost, the Anthracite Fuel Company was compelled to change most of its plant, and to erect more powerful machinery, producing lumps of a larger size, almost twice the size of the lumps made previously by the same company. The brief contribution of Mr. West* furnishes a text for the present paper, which will, however, take a wider range, warranted by the writer's somewhat unusual opportunities for the study of the practice of the foundry as well as the blast-furnace, and especially of the production of satisfactory castings from iron of a composition altogether unsuitable, in the opinion of the average foundryman, for that purpose. Mr. West has observed that plates cast from direct-metal of a certain composition could be planed, whereas this would have been impracticable with cupola-metal of like composition; that furnace-metal has more " life " (i. e., fluidity, or a higher temperature) than cupola-metal; that it throws out much " kish," etc. And he suggests that blast-furnace managers may throw further light on the greater softness of direct-metal castings. Perhaps such light may be furnished to some extent by the present paper. Production control of aluminum content of low carbon aluminum killed open hearth steels is being achieved by using an oxygen probe unit. Based on the free oxygen content of the bath after block, a preliminary chart for aluminum additions has been established. The aluminum aim is .040%. Controlled aluminum contents will result in eliminating coarse grain heats, high aluminum contents, and a reduction in aluminum costs. By reducing the frequency of high aluminum contents both cleaner and better rolling heats will be obtained. The savings in aluminum costs is an added benefit of lesser importance in comparison to the quality improvements gained by controlled aluminum contents. Although the main goal for the oxygen probe at Republic Steel has been to adapt it for production control of aluminum contents, future usage could be extensive. Immediate plans for using the probe are on degassed material, on fully blocked open hearth heats to improve manganese recoveries and ranges, and on machining grades to control oxygen content. Also by controlling the oxygen content of the steel to as close to equilibrium conditions as possible, cleaner steel will result.

DIATOMACEOUS earth occurs in deposits widely distributed throughout the nation. The chief producing areas are in the Western States, where many high-grade deposits are known. Eastern deposits of diatomite are unsatisfactory for many purposes either because of impurity or because of the extremely fine particle size. Eastern users of diatomite, on the whole, must pay for transportation of the material from the west coast. The freight rate is necessarily high because of the great bulk of the diatomite. A satisfactory process of purifying the diatomaceous earths of Maryland and Virginia, which are unsuited for wide use only because of impurities, should be of value to eastern users. In the past, benefication of diatomite by wet processes has been limited to classification or sedimentation for the removal of sand from diatoms. Calcination with salt is used to produce a white diatomite when iron is present in the impurities, and small amounts of clay are rendered inactive in the process. No treatment has been developed whereby a large proportion of clay can be removed from a low-grade diatomaceous earth to give a diatomite of very high purity. In August 1937 the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Dr. R. C. Williams, of Baltimore, undertook the problem of purifying low-grade Maryland diatomite by froth flotation. Work was done at the Eastern Experiment Station, College Park. Unless otherwise stated, the crude diatomite used was from the Patuxent River deposits near Dunkirk. This material, consisting of roughly one-third each of clay, quartz sand and diatoms, was representative of the usual low-grade marine diatomite found in the Coastal Plain Miocene beds of Maryland and Virginia and sporadically in other Atlantic coast states. As received, it contained 50 to 60 per cent moisture and probably had been wet since its formation.
