A Reference to the geological map of Alabama shows the Goalmeasures of that State to form three distinct fields. The Coosu, or most easterly, contains about one hundred square miles ; the Cahaba, or middle field, which is also the most southern true coal in the United States, contains about 230 square miles ; and the Warrior field, which contains in the State of Alabama some 5000 square miles, is the southern extremity of the great carboniferous deposit, which extends through Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia. But very little has yet been done towards developing those coalfields, partly owing to the absence of all commercial manufacturing enterprise in the South under slavery, and partly owing to the want of capital and the disturbed condition of the South since the war. UNTIL about 1930, the universal practice of horizontal-retort zinc smelters in the United States, as far as the writers are aware, was to operate the retort furnaces on a 24-hr cycle; that is, the retorts were charged in the early morning of one day, and in the early morning of the following day the residues were cleaned out, the retorts recharged, and a new cycle started. During the business depression of the early thirties, zinc production fell off to the extent that zinc smelters had idle retort capacity. Rather than continue to run some of the retort furnaces on a 24-hr cycle and shut down the remainder, a few companies decided to try out a longer cycle. Although the output of zinc per retort per day is lower, the longer cycle permits a larger charge per retort and improved zinc recovery. Advantages of the longer cycle were soon evident, and the practice spread rapidly. Various lengths of cycle were used, typical examples being 28-hr, 32-hr, 36-hr, and 48-hr. The 48-hr cycle fits in best with the standard routine of smelter practice that was built up on the basis of the 24-hr cycle; that is, the retort furnace "maneuver" always comes at the same time of day, and can be performed in the cool hours of the early morning. Under some conditions, particularly in some of the older plants, where the retorts are smaller than in newer plants, a 48-hr cycle is longer than necessary, and some intermediate length of cycle may theoretically be most economical. Use of an intermediate cycle, however, means that the maneuver comes at different times on consecutive days, and that sometimes it comes during the hottest part of the day. The work on the retort furnaces is extremely hot and arduous at best, and it is much worse, of course, if it is done during the heat of a summer day. When labor was plentiful and tractable, many plants were able to operate on cycles of intermediate length, but the workmen did not like the working hours. Under present labor conditions, it is hardly practicable to operate with a cycle of intermediate length, so the choice has narrowed down to the alternatives of 24-hr or 48-hr cycles. In any discussion of economics, too comprehensive generalization is not warranted, because local conditions affecting economics vary greatly. The best economic practice at one plant at any given time may be uneconomical at another plant, or even at the same plant at another time. To determine the length of cycle that is the better practice at a given plant at a given time requires a weighing of the advantages and disadvantages of each cycle, taking into consideration all the local conditions. Some of the factors that must be considered in making the comparison are discussed briefly in the following paragraphs.

The dike here described is exposed in the workings of the Wedge and Bachelor mines, on the southern side of Red Canon, north of the town of Ouray, Colorado. Its course is north 80° east, or nearly east and west, and it hades to the north about 10°. It rarely outcrops, and was nowhere seen at the surface near the mines. A specimen collected by Dr. A. C. Spencer about two miles to the westward, near the mouth of Red Creek, indicates, however, a probable exposure of the dike near this point. The Wedge and Bachelor mines lie in a nearly horizontal series of fine-grained, light-grey sandstones, alternating with beds of very fine-grained shale of the same color. The shale as encountered underground is unusually compact and massive, but weathers readily on exposure, and splits much after the manner of ordinary shale. When fresh it closely resembles some finely arenaceous limestones, but it does not effervesce with acids, and is eseentially a fine, indurated, siliceous silt. COMMERCIAL steel sheet is prepared by a combination of hot and cold rolling and annealing. This treatment usually results in more or less pronounced anisotropy. The [ ] anisotropy may manifest itself both as preferred orientation and in the manner in which impurities, segregations, and the like, are aligned in the sheet. The type of preferred orientation and the organization of impurities or segregations may affect the elastic moduli, the yield strength, the tensile strength, and almost always the amount of ductility in different directions. In any case, the most important directions concerned in the anisotropy are along the rolling direction, along the width direction, and along the thickness direction. Considerable data exist on the anisotropy of sheet steel as demonstrated by conventional tensile tests; however, few attempts have been made to measure the constants of plastic anisotropy and use them to describe the flow of anisotropic sheet under combined stresses. [ ] In this paper, evidence is presented indicating that plastic flow in anisotropic sheet can be described by the shear-strain energy flow theory provided that the anisotropy is properly taken into account. MATERIALS USED IN THE INVESTIGATION Table I lists the sheet materials used in this investigation and describes the condition in which materials were tested. DESCRIPTION OF TESTS AND TEST METHODS Two types of tests were run-tensile tests and hydraulic-bulge tests. Characteristic parameters of anisotropy were determined from the tension tests by methods which will be described later. OLIVIA'S recent revolution, by hindsight, seems to have been inevitable. The misery of the majority of the people, coupled with the economic crisis engendered by the refusal of the United States to meet Bolivian demands for a higher tin price, gave the National Revolutionary Movement party all the excuse it needed for overthrowing the government. Most of the mines in Bolivia are owned by three families. Precisely what it will mean to the United States is still a moot question. Argentina, with a mixture of Marxism, Fascism, and few twists created by the Perons, is in a position to grab off much of the tin we need. Because of the contingencies of geographical location, language and a natural simpatico, Argentina may be able to continue its efforts to oust the United States from its South American markets. Point Four aid was supposed to be given to Bolivia, but only for agriculture. Even this was entirely too slow. Mining, Bolivia's other major source of income was forgotten by the Washington planners. Primary aim of the new power will be to diminish its dependence on the world tin market. At a time when the free world is fighting a battle for control of metal, it stands a chance of losing an important source of supply. With the accent placed on agriculture and other industries, mining in Bolivia is certain to suffer. Argentina will be in a position to get the available supply of tin, make a strong ally in the world order of things, and add to its power play against the United States in South America. Ten labor groups have formed the Bolivian Central Workers Union. The first item on their list for immediate action is the nationalization of the mining and railroad industries. They also came out for agrarian revolution and diversification of industry. President Victor Paz Estenssoro has promised to appoint a committee for the investigation of nationalization of the mines. At least, this is indicative of a feeling for the need for caution.

SINCE the installation at Kropfmuehl, Bavaria, of a modern flotation concentrator in 1938, the flake and fine graphite from the Passau area can now be delivered in about any normal specified carbon content of any size range up to a flake averaging about 0.7 mm. The graphite finds a wide German and export market for crucible manufacture, pencil leads, dry cells and other uses.

In the summer of 1908, R. B. Cochran, Superintendent of the Compania Metalurgica Mexicana at Sierra Mojada, Mexico, presented to the Department of Geology and Mineralogy at Case School of Applied Science an interesting series of silver-, copper-, and lead-ores from the Veta Rica mine. These ores contained several interesting minerals which were associated in a somewhat peculiar manner, so that I was impelled to make a closer study of their occurrence. The investigation has brought out several new facts concerning the geology of the district and the geological occurrence of the ores, and therefore has seemed worthy of record. Two papers have been published previously about the region, one by Chisml in 1887, and the other by Malcolmson² in 1902. These articles, however, treat of the district more from the stand-point of the metallurgist and mining engineer, and not much attention is devoted to its mineralogy and economic geology. 11. Geographical Location of the District. The Sierra Mojada is situated in the extreme western part of the State of Coahuila, near the Chihuahua boundary. It is reached best via the Mexican Central railroad from El Paso, Tex., to Escalon, Chihuahua, a distance of 494 miles. From this point, a branch line, the Mexican Northern railroad, runs 78 miles in a NE. direction to the mines, which are its northern terminus. The railroad was built about 1890, practically on account of the Sierra Mojada mining-district.

THE question of the proper valuation of mines of iron ore was suggested to me by the difficulties experienced in getting answers for the United States Census Office, while I was engaged in the work of collecting the statistics of mines in New Jersey and New York The answers to the questions relating to values of real estate of mine properties varied so greatly that it was necessary to revise them according to some general principles of valuation. Generally the returns of mine proprietors Seemed to be too low. There were, however, examples of what would be termed excessive valuation. The Subject appeared to be of practical importance, and led to the paper here presented. The following table of selected mine statistics is given, prefacing the discussion of the principles of valuation. It is in part made up of census returns and partly of data obtained directly from mine owners and managers. The mines which were Selected for the Several groups and mining districts include nearly all of those from Which the more full and carefully filled returns were received, and are also representative of their respective districts. Hence the averages obtained from them become good types of these groups or districts. The mines of New Jersey appear in Six groups, each containing from three to eleven mines, or, in all, thirty-four mines. The magnetic iron ores of New York are in four well-marked groups, and there are twenty-six mines in them. Then follow the red hematite mines of St. Lawrence and Jefferson counties; and, lastly, the brown hematite groups of Dutchess and Columbia counties, and those of the adjacent parts of Connecticut and Massachusetts. The whole number of mines represented by the table is eighty-eight, of which twenty-eight are hematite mines. The first column gives the value of the real estate; the second that of the plant; the third is the sum of these two, or the capital invested. Then follow the number of men employed, the amount of wages paid during the census year, and the value of materials used in mining and preparing the ores for market.* The seventh column gives the total expendi- * The value of materials is somewhat uncertain in many cases, as royalties are included under this head. ANOTHER chapter in the history of Mother Lode mining is being written by operations in the Old Eureka mine near Sutter Creek, Amador County, California. During a two-year period (1938-1939), 85,517 tons of ore averaging 0.62 oz. gold per ton were mined and milled, as compared to the production of approximately 210,000 tons of 0.315-oz. gold ore during the preceding seven years. This is a repetition of mining history in the Mother Lode, where a period of prosperity has followed a long period of lean production. The location of this new ore in the hitherto unproductive hanging-wall greenstones and its mining and geological developments are most interesting.

The high temperature properties of Fe-Cr-Co-Ni base alloys and the effects of hardening element additions on these properties are rationalized on the basis of general principles of alloying. DURING the past few years the base elements in high temperature austenitic alloys have gradually been changed from iron-rich materials to nickel-rich, then to cobalt-rich and more recently to various iron, cobalt, and nickel combinations, all with an approximately constant chromium content of 20 pct. Concurrently, the hardening additions of the incongruous* elements, have been shifted from small amounts of a single element to various ratios of molybdenum, tungsten, columbium, carbon, titanium, and aluminum with the percentages of these constituents continually increasing. It has been known that the typical soft high temperature alloy (such as Inconel) consisted of face-centered cubic austenite, but the effect of varying the composition of the base elements, iron, chromium, nickel, and cobalt, has not been broadly analyzed. Therefore, it was reasoned that the first major problem in the understanding of the properties or the further development of high temperature alloys was to study systematically the effect of composition upon the mechanical properties of face-centered cubic Fe-Ni-Co-Cr austenitic solid solutions. The matrix of the strong high temperature alloys (such as Inconel X) is usually also a face-centered cubic solid solution of iron, nickel, chromium, and cobalt but with additional phases which can be generally classified as intermetallic compounds and carbides. It is usually observed that combinations of the hardening elements, tungsten, molybdenum, columbium, tantalum, titanium, aluminum, carbon, and others have been used in these strong high temperature alloys. At the Atlanta meeting of the Institute in October,' 1895, some brief remarks were made by Mr. Wilkens on the above subject. It is the object of this paper to set forth the substance of these previous statements, embodying therewith additional information gained since that time, and a brief illustrated description of the method and means of the separation.* Lack of time will unfortunately not allow as complete a resume of the subject in all its phases, especially those relating to the scientific side of the question, as its novelty and importance would warrant, so that even this paper must be considered a preliminary one. It is hoped that at some future meeting of the Institute we may find an opportunity of presenting supplementary data of interest. The paradoxical title above used requires some explanation. The term " non-magnetic material " is applied to such substances as have heretofore been considered non-magnetic in the arts, more especially in the practice of ore-concentration. Scientifically, it has been shown by Faraday, Plucker, Wiedemann and other physicists that magnetism is an inherent property common to all substances, solid, liquid and gaseous, i.e., all suhstances are either attracted or repelled by the poles of a magnet, although ill the great majority of cases the manifestation of this

Abstract-This paper describes the analytical characteristics of Western subbituminous coal and the manner in which these characteristics apply to their use in a utility-sized steam generator. It compares these characteristics with those of typical Midwestern coal and Eastern bituminous coal. The paper also reviews in detail the design considerations that must receive attention when various blends of these three coals, or any combinations thereof, are planned to be used. This research paper describes variations in analytical and utilization characteristics when coals from different origins are blended in order to achieve a predetermined sulfur content for the purpose of predicting sulfur oxides emissions as they affect environmental regulations and the resulting alterations in utilization characteristics such blending would cause, and how such blends of coal would affect a utility-sized steam generator.

Ore microscopic study of copper-bearing shale at the Creta mine in southwestern Oklahoma reveals a variety of copper sulfide grains and shows that each has originated by replacement of original constituents In the Permian Flowerpot Shale at Creta. The largest grains, about 120 pm in diameter, are replacements of megaspores with triletes morphology. Their interiors are shown by Auger microprobe analyses to be organic matter. The interior organic matter and the spore exines have been replaced by anilite and djurleite. Digenite and anilite replace collomorphic pyrite averaging 40 pm in diameter. Grains 10 pm or less in d~ameter are mostly euhedral, six-sided, platy crystals that have anllite compositions and are pseudomorphous after pyrrhotzte. Other 10 pm copper sulfide grains are pseudomorphous after octahedra and cubes of pyrite. The results of this study indicate that the copper minerals are epigenetic and were deposited from fluids introduced into the Creta shale when it was relatively uncompacted and permeable. The shale served as a favorable reducing environment that contained a source of sulfur in the form of pyrite and pyrrhotite.

With some uncertainty as to the type, rate and scope of adoption of air pollution control regulations, and with limited information on the availability of low-sulfur fuels, it is possible at best to make only a rough assessment of the impact of such regulations on coal. It is apparent from the following discussion that regulations of the type already effective or being considered, if adopted and enforced on a widespread basis over a short-term period and if substitute fuels were available, both quantitatively and economically, could result in a loss of more than one-half of coal's markets. Depending on the areal sequence of adoption of such regulations, some areas would be able to obtain limited amounts of low-sulfur coals. Others would not. Because of the usually greater distances from the large industrial coal consuming areas to new sources of coal supply, and because of the higher mine prices for low-sulfur coals, the delivered prices of such coals as might be available would be much higher than those for high-sulfur coals. A large and sudden demand for low-sulfur coals would exert further upward pressure on prices.

Placer dredging as we know it today, especially gold dredging, is an industry about 40 years old, dating from the beginning of this century, when a few mining men in California saw the possibilities in adapting earlier dredging methods to California placer fields in and immediately adjacent to streams. At first it was thought that dredges must be operated in existing stream beds, but experience soon pointed the way to dredging alluvial deposits of old stream beds, operating on landlocked dredging ponds. Within the first five or six years of modern dredging, experience was gained so rapidly that dredges to dig 60 ft. below water level were *designed and built. This depth was believed by many operators to be the maximum at which successful dredging could be carried on. Alluvial deposits of gold, suitable for dredging, were readily handled by equipment available and developed early in the industry's history. Much of the gravel was easily dug and if deposits were cemented, contained large boulders, or for some other reason could not be handled by a dredge, the ground was abandoned in favor of other deposits that could be handled easily. Many failures, adversely affecting the dredging industry, resulted from attempts at that time to extend the scope of placer dredging with equipment not suited to the formation being dredged. Dredging ground suited to early equipment was exhausted eventually, but many supposedly undredgeable alluvial fields containing gold in commercial quantities were found and became known to dredgemen. Improved equipment was needed to work deposits known to exist at great depths or associated with unusual obstructions. Operating companies looked to dredge manufacturers and metallurgists, particularly manganese-steel foundries, for improved designs and materials. Experience developed in California has spread throughout the world, and dredges of improved types have been adapted to the mining of platinum and tin as well as gold. Space will not permit a description of all the improvements in dredging since the early days, but a few of the recent developments are worthy of note, because they make possible the dredging of placer deposits of great depth, those having hard, irregular bedrock or containing large boulders in great quantities, and compacted or cemented gravel deposits. Deep Dredging At Hammonton, calif., yuba consolidated Gold Fields has, within= the past two years, built its dredge No. 20. The company has operated continuously in that field since 1904, digging successively at maximum depths of 60 ft., 80 ft., 112 ft., and now 124 ft. below water level. The first dredges were equipped with buckets of 6 and 7½-cu. ft. capacity; six dredges operating in the field today have 18-cu. ft. buckets, digging now 65 to 124 ft. below water level. The necessity, on the Pacific Coast and throughout the semiarid regions in particular, of the conservation of waters for agricultural, industrial and mining purposes has forced itself upon the minds of those directly or indirectly interested in these industries. To meet the requirements of the case, storage must be provided for the flood-waters so abundant during the rainy season in order to insure a constant and unfailing supply during the summer months. Such storage can only be obtained, in the greater number of instances, by the erection of reservoir-walls of great height. The feasibility of employing earth or timber in the construction of such high dams is questionable, especially when (as is often the case) they must be placed in torrential streams. The experience of recent years with masonry dams, throughout this and foreign countries, has demonstrated that such dams, when intelligently and correctly designed and properly constructed, will meet the requirements of larger storage by means of increased height. The failures of masonry dams have been few; only two of any consequence being on record, namely, that of the Puentes dam, in Spain, in 1802, and that of the Habra dam, in Algiers, in 1810.* On the other hand, the failures of wooden and earthern dams are innumerable. The health hazard due to the inhalation of certain dusts in the mining industry has been recognized, but was not subject to state or federal inquiry in the United States until about 1916. Reports on miners' phthisis and associated effect of dust inhalation were published as early as 1903 in South Africa and in 1906 in Australia. A report was made by Lanzal in January 1917 of a study of 433 cases of miners' consumption among zinc miners in southwestern Missouri. In a preliminary report issued in 1915 Lanza and Higgins2 concluded that, while there were general causes, such as housing and working conditions, that tended to produce a high incidence of tuberculosis, the flint dust constituted an unusual element of danger, to which it was reasonable to attribute the unusual prevalence of tuberculosis. Later a clinic established under the joint sponsorship of the United States Bureau of Mines, the mine owners, and the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. carried on an extensive study covering a period of five years. The results of this study have borne out the conclusions reached in the earlier surveys. The early surveys in this country indicated the necessity of determining the extent of the dust pollution of air associated with the various mining operations. The first determinations were reported on the weight basis, undoubtedly to make comparisons with work previously done in Australia. Later studies of dust in industry led to the development of more refined methods of sampling and enumeration on the basis of count in place of weight, so that by 1919 Knowles3 reported 53 methods.

WHEN Agassiz and his party of geologists commenced their exploration of the interior of Brazil and the Amazon region, one of the first and, to the last, one of the most novel and striking phenomena which met them everywhere was the great depth of decomposed or partially decayed rock in situ, which mantles, and for the most part conceals, the underlying strata. The same facts strike all geological observers from the North who happen to penetrate the middle and southern latitudes of the Atlantic States.
