PACIFIC COAST steel and iron industries can now take care of all the western and export demands except for heavy structural shapes, thick plates, rails, alloy tool steels, and a few other items. In. 1902 all of our steel came from St. Louis and Milwaukee and points still farther east. A small quantity at that time came from foreign countries. Early mining in the West was, broadly speaking, prior to the steel age. 'Wood for structures and iron for castings were almost exclusively used. Forgings were made of rolled iron that came from the East and foreign countries. San Francisco was, from the early days of mining, the manufacturing center for mining and milling machinery of all types and held that position until the .nineties, when eastern competition began to be felt. Even today in the old mining camps of the West, and many abroad, you will find machines and equipment with familiar San Francisco manufacturers' names. ..Iron, either rolled or cast, entered into their manufacture, for steel castings did not come into general use :until the nineties.

Beginning in 1906, data has been compiled on the distribution of uranium in phosphate de- posits. Particular emphasis has been placed on uranium in phosphate by a number of geologists and geochemists in the US Geological Survey in research sponsored by the US Atomic Energy Commission (now Nuclear Regulatory Commission) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) during the 30-year period from 1951 to 1981. A comprehensive study of uraniferous phosphate resources the United States and the Free World was completed, under the auspices of DOE, in 1979. Apatite is the main carrier of uranium in phosphate. Uranium generally replaces calcium in the mineral lattice. In marine phosphorite throughout the world, the uranium content is characteristically in the range of 0.005 to 0.02% by weight. Phosphorite takes in uranium by structural substitution in apatite or other mineral phases, by absorption, or by the formation of independent mineral phases. Apatite derived from the interaction of ground water, guano and limestone is typically relatively low in uranium content-in the 0.001 to 0.005% range. In primary accessory apatite of igneous rocks, as well as magmatic and metasomatic apatite segregations of alkalic rocks and carbonatite, uranium content is generally between 0.001 and 0.01%. THe answer to the title question will be found by considering the ultimate influence of the petroleum engineers on industry and by considering the tools with which petroleum engineers must be equipped. Some 2000 to 3000 petroleum engineers are being absorbed by the industry yearly, indicating the magnitude of influence which they may exert on the industry. The petroleum industry is a highly technical one and it is inevitable that management be entrusted more and more to executives with technical training. The industry, therefore, expects the petroleum engineering schools to provide a broad basic training and a social and economic orientation which goes beyond merely supplying the minimum technical qualifications necessary to discharge responsibilities for a particular job. Because of the many branches of industry, emphasis must be placed on the Student's being trained in fundamentals, as well as grounded in other engineering branches, such as mechanical, civil and electrical engineering. The petroleum engineering graduate must know how to outline and organize the material for an engineering report and should be thoroughly grounded in English, both written and spoken. Even to the end that a five-year course may be required, they should receive instructions in auxiliary cultural and social science courses, industrial relations, and public speaking. Training in the method of approach to an engineering problem is something in which industry is deeply interested. A standard of ethics, a desire to arrive at the truth, and leadership training should be stressed. Introduction The basis of an an to any ques- tion concerning the petroleum engineering schools' responsibility to the industry will be found by considering the ultimate influence of the petroleum engineers on the industry and by considering also the tools with which petroleum engineers must be equipped in order to achieve success and happiness in the role in which their training, individual talents and choice of a profession ultimately will cast them. The problem must always be considered as it relates to a large group and not as it relates to a particular individual possessing strong natural talents and destined, by virtue of them, to pursue a certain course. The question implies that petroleum engineering schools have a responsibility, and indeed they do, not only to the industry but also to the students and even to the public. Because the responsibility is concentrated in a relatively few schools whose graduates are absorbed largely by the one industry, the responsibility is more apparent and the effect of failure to discharge the responsibility fully is more serious than the effect of similar failure on the part of schools supplying a smaller portion of the industry's intake of engineering graduates. This fact is especially true with respect to an industry such as the petroleum industry whose ratio of technical to nontechnical employees is relatively high and is increasing.

Ti-Au alloys in the composition interval 0 to 66 213 atomic pct Au have been studied over a temperature range from 400° to 1500°C. A partial phase diagram has been established from micrographic and macroscopic observations. All intermediate phases, Ti3Au, TiAu, and TiAu., exhibit open melting maxima. It has been observed that small additions of gold lower the allotropic transformation temperature of titanium. The P solid solution decomposes eutectoidally to a solid solution plus Ti3Au. The solubility of gold in a solid solution decreases with temperature. THERE have been several papers in the literature pertaining to the alloy system Ti-Au. However, a comprehensive study of this interesting constitu- tion diagram has not been conducted. Previous investigations have been concerned with the crystal structure of intermediate phases or partial phase diagrams. This paper represents a partial constitution diagram, Ti-TiAu,, the first portion of an investigation of the entire binary system. Laves and Wallbaum' reported the intermediate phase Ti,Au to be isomorphous with CuAu, L12 type. In a more recent paper, Duwez and Jordan' have concluded that TiAu has an atomic arrangement which is related to Cr,Si. The intermediate phase

Although the Western bentonite industry has grown rapidly, it is facing major challenges to sustained growth. The fundamental penalty of costly overland transportation to both domestic markets and to US seaports is of increasing importance; as both substitute materials and foreign bentonites present more formidable competition in the historic market areas of drilling muds, foundry sands, and iron ore pelletizing; and as foreign demand grows more rapidly than domestic demand. The Western bentonite industry is facing these challenges by altering its transportation patterns, by upgrading of products, and by emphasizing customer service and stringent quality control.

Probably no other prosperous mining district is so little known as the Black Hills. The name leads one to assume that the district is a rolling country, consisting of more or less insignificant hills. Nothing could be more untrue, as the Black Hills is an elevated region rising to heights of 7000 and 8000 feet above sea-level, and broken by deep gorges and ravines. It is, in fact, a mountainous country in all that that term implies ; but the cañons and gorges are of such a character that the country is easily penetrated by railroad-lines, and good wdgon-roads exist to-day, affording access to every portion of it. Aside from the stampede to the Black Hills country in 1876, when gold-placers were discovered, and 15,000 or 20,000 people became infected with the mining fever, the region has never had a mining " boom." Quartz-mining commenced in 1877 or 1878, and has been successfully prosecuted ever since; the output of gold steadily growing, until at present the yield is about $7,000,000 annually. This great production is about equally divided between two entirely different classes of deposits. The first class, comprising the so-called quartz or free-milling ores (of which the Homestake mine is the principal producer), are veins of generally steep dip, in the older metamorphosed rocks, and similar to the veins worked in other mining districts. The second class of mines is located in what is known as the " siliceous gold-belt." The Siliceous Gold-Belt. This belt, more particularly to be described in this paper, lies in the immediate vicinity of Deadwood and Lead City, and covers an area 6 or 7 miles in length by 3 or 4 miles in width. THE operator's panel is the control center f or the operation of the electric-arc furnace. It contains the switches and meters that control and indicate the power supply and in a way gives a picture of what is going on during the meltdown and refining periods. Regardless of manufacture, these panels are very similar with respect to equipment and position of apparatus. A typical panel is shown in Fig I. The three lights at the top of the panel are connected from the electrodes to ground and give a visual measure of the voltage across each arc. The ammeters underneath the lights show the current passing through each electrode. Directly underneath are the voltmeter, the watt-hour meter and the wattmeter and under these the three current-adjusting rheostats. In the center of the panel is the master electrode-control switch, which controls the movement of all three electrodes, with the individual electrode-control switches directly underneath. Next from left to right is the six-position voltmeter switch, which can be positioned to show on the voltmeter above the voltage between phases and to ground, the tap-changer switch with its indicating lights, and the main circuit-breaker control switch.

The laboratory test work compares various 6 x 16 mesh activated coconut carbons using a gold standard solution of 4 ppm dissolved in sodium cyanide. The carbon adsorption rate and maximum loading are measured for different feed solution ionic contaminates: silver, copper, thiocyanate, and ferrocyanide. Conclusions are drawn that among the activated coconut carbons tested, maximum loading and the effects of specific ions varied significantly. The work presented can be applied to 6 x 16 mesh carbon selection tests and specific ion monitoring for industrial carbon adsorption systems.

WHEN bronze is melted in open-flame furnaces a considerable amount of slag is formed during the melting operation. This slag may be incidental to the melting practice or it may be formed intentionally by slag-forming constituents added to the furnace charge to provide a covering for the melted metal. When this slag is removed from the furnace, it contains, in addition to the free metal carried with it by the skimming operation, a considerable amount of metal as oxide either combined or mechanically mixed with it. By the usual crushing and washing methods this metallic oxide generally goes to the tailings pile, so diluted by other foundry waste that its recovery is economically impossible. If this furnace slag is not mixed with other foundry waste, practically all of the metal oxide as well as the free metal may be recovered by some form of smelting operation. The first side of the problem to be considered is the amount of slag produced. It may not be true that the majority of foundries have no record of the amount of slag made, but it is certainly true that a very great many either have no record or pay little attention to it. Usually the collection of furnace slag for one normal week's run will be sufficient to determine the advisability of its being handled in a different manner from the crushing and concentrating generally employed. If a large representative sample of the accumulation is crushed and concentrated and the recovery compared with the results of a careful assay, it will be found that a large percentage of the total metal content was lost in the washing process. The percentage of loss will be greater than the metallic oxide content, as some free metal in extremely fine particles always is carried away in grains of slag: From such a comparison, it may be determined whether or not the slag should be melted, sold or treated as before. An example of an actual test of this kind is given below.

The use of sulfuric acid in refining illuminating oils antedates the beginning of the petroleum industry in America by many years. It was used as early as 1792 by Tower in refining "coal oil" in the British Isles, and by 1860 there were 53 refineries in the United States manufacturing "coal oil," most of them using sulfuric acid as a refining agent. Following the completion of the Drake well in 1859, many of the "coal oil" refiners began to use petroleum for manufacturing illuminating oil, and their methods and equipment were adapted so far as possible to this new raw material. The value of sulfuric acid in refining L'coal oil" having been established, this reagent was immediately tried and found to be satisfactory in refining petroleum. Notwithstanding the tremendous advances in petroleum technology since that time, sulfuric acid remains today the most valuable and most widely used means for refining petroleum products. Early Methods of Disposal of Acid Sludge With the almost immediate expansion of the petrolrum industry came the problem of disposing of the acid sludge produced in the refining operations. While in 1859, the year of the discovery of the Drake well, a patent was granted for sludge separation and separated acid concrntration, most of the earlier refiners, and rnany of their successors, felt that separation and recovery of spent acid was uneconomical. Accordingly, many of then) disposed of the sludge in any way that seemed expedient nt the time. It was huricd in the refinery grounds, harged and tlurnped at sea, run into neighboring streams, or dumped into sewers. Some optimists carted it to open pits in the hope that it would eithcr sink into the ground or evaporate. Not so many years ago, the superintendent of nn eastern refinery, who was using the open-pit method of disposal, lost, a sludge cart, with horse attached, in such a pit. The horse was recovred almost immediately, but its availability for further use was reduced to zero by the loss of its hair.

Three hundred soil samples were collected on a one-mile grid in a 400-square mile area of the Oquirrh Mountains, Utah, including the Bingham-Lark, Ophir, Rush Valley, and Mercur mining districts. The soil samples were analyzed for copper, lead, zinc, silver, molybdenum, manganese, and iron by X-ray fluorescence using arsenic as an internal standard. Anomalies coincide in most cases with the mining districts. However, in the Mercur district no anomalies were detected. Also samples collected one mile from the Bingham mine barely reflect this major producer. No samples were collected within the Bingham mine area.

In response to the growing demand for low-sulfur coking coal for iron-making, the coal industry is continually striving to perfect methods for cleaning coal to acceptable ash and sulfur levels while maintaining maximum product yield. By present standards the industry has adequate processes for cleaning coarse coal, (i.e., +28 mesh) at almost any desired specific gravity. However, in the case of fine coal (i.e., -28 mesh) neither of the two existing processes-froth flotation and hydrocycloning-in its present state of development yields products that are comparable in ash and/or sulfur content to products normally obtained from coarse coal processes. The work outlined in this article is part of a larger study directed toward maximum exploitation of froth flotation for fine coal processing. The concepts and data presented are now serving as a basis for designing fine-coal circuits in which improved efficiency is obtained by optimum use of froth flotation with other fine-coal processing methods.

The design of a longwall entry system is discussed in this Bureau of Mines paper. This is done primarily through the results of an in-mine case study made of two sets of longwall entries utilizing the stiff- yield pillar design concept. The rock mechanics instrumentation plan used in this case study is shown, including a description of the instrumentation layout and the types of instruments used. The analysis of the stress changes in the abutment and yield pillars is presented in detail as the longwall panels were mined. Conclusions concerning when the pillar first started to experience significant stress, pillar stress history as the longwall face approached and moved past the pillars, stress distribution within the pillars and relative stress changes between yield and abutment pillars are discussed. The paper concludes with a discussion of the redistribution of stress in the vicinity of the long- wall panel.

The great advance of the last twenty years in the specialization, delicacy and efficiency of ore-concentrating apparatus calls for a finer system of testing both the qualities of ores and the operations of machines in this department. In amalgamation, lixiviation and smelting, the daily employment of physical and chemical tests has been recognized as necessary, and the cost of the necessary laboratories and employees is cheerfully paid. But while much progress has been made in concentration (due, in a large degree, to the study of the subject in our technical schools), it is still too common in actual practice to follow the loose old method of roughly estimating, once for all, that a given ore " concentrates x tons into one," and resting on this assumption so long as that ore continues to be treated, while assays of the tailings from concentration are made from time to time, without exact determination of their quantity. The first step toward accuracy of control must be a more frequent and precise measurement of the quantity of concentrates from a given operation. This should be expressed in pounds per unit of one ton; and the variations shown in frequent determinations will furnish a constant check upon the character of the ore and the performance of the apparatus. But this is only a part of what should be constantly and systematically done to insure the best work upon a material which must vary continually, even though it come from one mine only. If, in any mill, appropriate laboratory-tests were made at least once a week, the labor and expense involved would be amply repaid by increased knowledge and control of the current operations. The problems of getting air to the working face of a mine (or perhaps the problems caused by not getting air to the working face) have led to the development of an analogue system in England that reputedly bypasses many of the drawbacks that such systems have encountered in the past. The unit was developed for the Wolstanton Combined mine, an underground operation consisting essentially of three collieries situated in the center of the North Staffordshire coalfield. This combination of workings, which employs a total of eight shafts, brings with it complex ventilation problems, and in order to study these problems and to assist in the control of the established ventilation system, a Ventilation Analogue has been designed and installed to permanently represent the mine's ventilation system.

Seepages of oil in Ecuador have been known for many years. The locality first to receive attention, and still worked in a modest way, lies on the north shore of the Santa Elena peninsula, between La Puntilla and Salinas. Operations mere first conducted largely by local cdpital. Later, foreign companies acquired large blocks of land, where they have done considerable drilling. For details concerning present drilling activities in Ecuador, we are indebted to Leon Price, an Ame~ican resident engineer of Ecuador. The information solicited came to the author through the office of the American Consulatell with permission to use it. The coastal plain bordering the Province of Tumbes, Peru, continues to the northeast, but narrow on passing the Zarumilla River. From this point northward it widens toward Santa Rosa. In fact, the pampas, as shown on the official Wolf map, correspond fairly well to the areal extent of tbe coastal plain as far as Guayaquil. This is shown in a general way on the accompanying map. The author understands that the Guayaquil enlbayment is bordered on all sides by the coastal plain, as recognized at Tumbes and farther southwest, and that it can be followed without a break as far north as Palmar. This view is supported by the mapped area regarded by Mr. Price as favorable or possible oil territory. Moreover the islands in the Gulf of Guayaquil are the same geologically as the coastal edge, being composed of Tertiary sediments. The author understands also that Tertiary formations occur north of Palmar. According to a report by Mr. Cardon, of Guayaquil, Tertiary sediments are exposed in the region of San Francisco and extend to and beyond Pta. Calera. There is also reason to believe that at least the lower part of the valley of the Santiago River is occupied by Tertiary sediments, ~~hich probably border the const line and extend into the River Mini l)nsin, and into Colombia. On the south coast there are many seepages, most of them near the inner edge of the coastal plain, between Zarumilla and Santa Rosa and also between Santa Rosa and Machala. I11 the latter region are
