Mississippi, during the year 1941, experienced the greatest diversity of oil activity since the beginning of oil interest in the state—core tests for exploration, core tests for sulphur, continued drilling at Tinsley for production, and wildcatting, which brought to light two new oil fields and two new salt domes. There were 45 wildcat wells drilled in 1941, which showed greater results and findings geologically than the 85 drilled in 1940. Tinsley Oil Field (Yazoo County).—The Tinsley oil field, with its boundaries fairly well defined now, is 8 miles long and 3 miles wide at its widest point. During the past year 213 producing wells were completed, which brought the total number of producers in the field by the end of 1941 to 325 wells. Seven producing sands have been logged, with a total average thickness of 30 ft. of oil sand. The producing formations are the Selma, Eutaw and Tuscaloosa. The average total depth of the wells is 5012 ft. The average gravity of the oil is 35.4°. Production for 1941 was approximately 15,500,000 bbl. of oil. Vaughan-Pickens Oil Field (Yazoo County).—At the end of 1941 only three wells were Producing in this field, the fourth having been abandoned. The total production for the field for the year was approximately 250,000 bbl. of oil. The producing sand is the Wilburn, in the Eutaw formation. AT THE beginning of September, the French eased their pressure against Germany and allowed the latter to, be granted an arrangement for its reparation payments in kind according to the Lubersac-Stinnes agreement. The whole arrangement as to the German reparations is, however, but temporary. The Greeks suffered a disastrous defeat at the hands of the Turks in Anatolia, which rapidly resulted in the expulsion of the Greeks from Asia Minor, the Turks occupying Smyrna about Sept. 10. A few days after entering Smyrna the Turks sacked the city and finally set it afire, creating one of the most terrible destructions in history. At the same time their advance on Constantinople, together with their demands on the Allies, brought them directly in, con-flict with the latter and Great. Britain prepared for a new war, with doubt as to the support of France, whose political interests in the Near East are as different as their economic interests with respect to ;Germany. The Turkish situation became thus a threat against the peace of Europe. A revolution in Greece, followed by the abdication of King Constantine and the return of Venizelos to a function in the Government was one of the conse-quences of the defeat in Asia Minor. Civil war continued in Ireland, with more or less -bloodshed. Economically there has been no change for the better in Europe. In Great Britain there, are no signs of an -important trade revival. In Germany and Austria things are worse. French, Italian and Spanish affairs continue in a bad way. In the United States business is represented as "booming," but many people are inquiring where is the boom? About the middle of September Congress passed the tariff and the soldier bonus bills. The President signed the former and vetoed the latter, with a strong message that won praise among people who understand condi-tions. Congress tried to pass the bill over the veto, but failed. The President signed the tariff bill, which became effective Sept. 21. A severe handicap was thus imposed on American economics.

Recognizing the fact that the problems of the committee named by the Board to prepare the "official ticket" for officers and Directors of the Institute are various and difficult; and desiring to assist this committee by setting forth some of the principles that should guide the committee and some of the qualifications that should be required of candidates, the following instructions are formulated and the Secretary is directed to publish them in MINING AND METALLURGY concurrently with the publication of the names of each newly appointed Nominating Committee and to send a copy to each member of the Committee.

This study presents results of investigations in a small model of segregation in discharged fill slurry, the quantity of solids escaping in the drain liquid, and the relationship of solids to slurry concentration and discharge rate. Compressibilities of fine fill material, in dry and wet states and individual size fractions, are compared. Two terms are frequently used in describing the hydraulic placement of fill material underground: hydraulic stowing is mostly associated with the underground flushing of coarse-sized fill material, such as coal washery refuse; while hydraulic backfilling refers to placement of small-sized fill material, e.g., sand or classified mill tailings, mainly in metal mines. Characteristically, in backfilling, only a few hours may elapse between the time the material is hoisted as ore and redeposited as fill underground. Hydraulic filling was first used about 100 years ago to control subsidence in coal mines. It was subsequently adopted in many mining operations all over the world, but its basic concepts have never been adequately studied and analyzed. This is not surprising, when one considers the number of variables involved in the hydraulic backfilling operation. Recently, much work has been done on the problems of transportation of slurries in pipes. Comparatively less research work has been done concerning the physical properties of fill material (compressibility, cementation, permeability, etc.). Very little work has been done on the problems of fill placing, distribution, and segregation of fill material discharged in the mine void. It is the purpose of this paper to explore two of the basic, lesser known aspects of filling: segregation and compressibility in discharged fill slurry. Difficulties in observing the behavior of hydraulic fill slurry during the pouring operation underground, and insufficient knowledge to conduct any kind of meaningful theoretical analysis, suggest experimental model studies. The tests described in the following sections were conducted in the Rock Mechanics Laboratory of the Department of Mining at Penn State.

THE gradually increasing proportion of sulphide ores which lead smelters of to-day are called upon to handle has caused the roasting problem to become one of ever greater importance. We may look back a score of years or so and recall the old hand roasters, some of which turned out a finely divided roasted product, and others fashioned with a "fuse-box" wherein the roasted ore was slagged. Then came mechanical furnaces of several types, the Brückner cylinder, the Brown-O'Harra, the Ropp, and others, all designed to cut out the cumbersome hand labor of the old reverberatories. Roasting costs were thereupon reduced and tonnages stimulated to a gratifying extent. However, it seems to have been early recognized that this very feature of a greater amount of roasted sulphide ore as compared with oxide ore brought with it a train of difficulties at the blast furnaces. The mechanically roasted ore was fine physically, the blast furnaces were choked and the troubles of the smelterman were not at an end. Then the Huntington-Heberlein pot system of roasting appeared upon the scene, and later on the Dwight-Lloyd machines were invented, and inasmuch as both of these processes were designed not only to roast the ore but to agglomerate it as well, it was apparent that distinct steps in advance has been achieved. At the Murray plant, modern up-to-date roasting practice is fully exemplified and there are now in successful operation roasting furnaces or devices of several sorts: namely, Godfrey revolving-hearth furnaces, Wedge multiple-hearth mechanical roasters, Dwight-Lloyd. sintering machines, and Huntington-Heberlein pots. Godfrey and Wedge furnaces will properly handle material high in sulphur, say ores with 25, 30, and 35 per cent. of that element; D. &.L. machines and H. & H. pots will positively not treat efficiently ores or mixtures containing anywhere near the sulphur content mentioned, but are confined to charges containing in the neighborhood of 15 or 18 per cent. In passing, it may also be explained that, so far as the knowledge of the writer goes, Godfrey and Wedge furnaces do not economically eliminate sulphur to an extent

At the annual meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Dec. 4 to 7, 1917, a great many matters were discussed and acted upon in which nearly all engineers are equally interested. Of the numerous sessions of the meeting, only a few of the most important can be referred too here. The Committee on Gages held an open meeting for the discussion of this important matter. Representatives from a large number of manufacturing plants and from several departments of the Federal Government were present. The question of gages and standardization of mechanical details is of course of paramount interest just now in connection with the manufacture of ordnance and ammunition. Linear aquifers, either limited or essentially infinite, may be encountered in reservoir engineering practice. In areas where faulting fixes reservoir boundaries, the fault block reservoir may have an aquifer of limited extent whose geometry is best approximated as linear. An infinite linear aquifer can occur as a regional feature whenever water movement through the aquifer member is constrained to one direction. Such constraints can arise from major faults, facies changes or pinchout of the member. Miller* pointed out that linear aquifers have received only meager attention in the past. He analyzed the performance of finite and infinite aquifers, developed working equations and curves, and presented examples. While Miller's curves may be used fairly easily, a separate one is required for each size of aquifer. In this paper, Miller's equations have been used as a starting point. By modifying them slightly, they can be reduced to a form which yields a single working curve, applicable to any size of aquifer. Thus. interpolation between curves is eliminated and accuracy is improved. Miller's results for finite aquifers covered only the boundary condition of no flow across the outer aquifer boundary. This paper also includes the case of constant pressure at the outer aquifer boundary.

AMONG the half-dozen major research search projects now being conducted at the Michigan College of Minim, and Technology under the terms of an FERA grant, an important one relates to the use of suspensions in ore dressing. The study has resulted from the constantly widening industrial use of metals and minerals. The modest demands of a few decades ago for these minerals could be easily met from richer deposits. Now, at least in some localities, the richer deposits are nearing exhaustion. Furthermore, advances in the industrial arts and the competition of other minerals and metals have changed the specifications of materials needed by the manufacturers. At its meeting on February 21, 1933, the Board of Directors passed the following resolution defining and expressing the policy of the Institute with respect to official participation or action in controversial matters: WHEREAS, the Board of Directors at its last meeting passed the following resolution : "The Board of Directors, having been appealed to by several Local Sections for advice concerning the attitude and policy of the Institute relating to the endorsement of candidates for public office, the following statement of policy is formulated: "Whereas, the American Institute of Miming and Metallurgical Engineers is organized for purely professional and scientific purposes, and whereas diversity of opinion among its members on partisan or political questions is inevitable, it is the ex- pressed policy of the Institute to refrain from official participation or action in political and semi-political matters."

Regarding the technical paper by Thomas E. Finch and Edward L. Fidler, "Recovery of Stray (Thin) Seams in Western Coal Mining." I would like to comment on this subject. In western Canada, most strip mines encounter thin seam coal or rider seams. Although the paper addresses the problems and costs associated with the recovery of this coal, it does not take into account what the savings are. Without looking at the savings, the "Total Objective" is of course not clear. I feel that in a stripping operation the mine can spend per ton (of the thin seam) up to their dragline stripping costs per ton to recover a rider seam or thin seam. The reasoning behind this is simply that this is the price the mine will have to pay to expose an equivalent amount of coal without the recovery of these thin seams. If the mine can recover a rider seam or thin seam for less than the dragline operating costs per ton, a savings will be realized. By recovering a thin seam or rider seam, the life of an ore body is extended by that amount of coal not thrown away. In addition, the cost of land acquisition, associated permits, capital, and reclamation will be reduced as more coal is delivered for a given area. When the above points are considered, the recovery of these thin seams can be very profitable and indeed worth recovering.

It may surprise the learned metallurgists who read this paper to learn that, by a recent discovery, nails of good quality can be made at one operation, directly from the ore, at the rate of, say, sixty per minute for each operator. It should be stated, however, that the raw material referred to does not answer strictly the ordinary assayer's definition of' an ore. It is found, in strata of various thickness, in Harlem, N. Y., and other localities where the débris from restaurants and from sheet-metal factories of various kinds has been dumped. In other words, it is old and new tin-scrap—one of the few substances which this generation, mainly occupied in exhausting the accumulated resources of the past, seems to have laid up, by way of atonement, for the benefit of posterity. In speaking of this material as ore, we are simply looking forward, prophetically, to the time when our descendants may dig it. up and write learned papers for the American Institute of Mining Engineers upon the best methods of assaying and smelting it. At least such has seemed to be its destiny hitherto. It may fairly be said that the many attempts which have been made to utilize it by separating, through chemical or electrolytical processes, its two valuable constituents, metallic tin and first-class wroughtiron, have failed, either technicaljy or commercially. The reasons fur such failure need not here be discussed: Either the separation has been incomplete, the iron still retaining enough tin to spoil it for the sinking-fire, or other use short of re-melting (perhaps even for that), or the manipulations of the process have been too expensive to make its results profitable—or both. Meanwhile the great tin-scrap deposits have gone on growing faster than any other strata of our Post-Tertiary, Psychical Era; given up by metallurgists, not yet attacked by geologists, and explored only by that mining engineer of the transitional period, Gulielmus Caper. Before leaving these heaps of tin-scrap, however, to become mere mineral deposits for future ages, it may be well to consider a novel plan for their immediate utilization—novel, not only in its means, but in its principle. Many of the proposed techniques for calculating the reliability of rock slopes utilize Monte Carlo simulation. Monte Carlo approaches are attractive because they provide means of solving probabilistic problems with deterministic algorithms. One disadvantage shared by all simulation-based stability analyses is that they assume all the random variables are independently distributed. The paper focuses on the independence assumption and examines the effect of correlation on the probability of failure. In particular it considers the influence of possible (albeit hypothetical) correlation between joint attitudes [(8)] and joint friction angles [($)]. The study indicates that neglecting correlation can introduce significant errors into the reliability computations. With a modest positive correlation between [8] and [$] the error can lead to a 100% overestimate of the probability of failure.

Heat-resisting chromium steels and alloys treated at 825° or 9.50°C (1527° or 1742°F) in a carburizing atmosphere exhibit an extensive carbide precipitation. This carbide precipitation may be succeeded by the FeCr a phase or by a carbide with a higher carbon content. Point analyses carried out with an electron mi-croanalyzer make it possible to study the depletion of chromium in the matrix after precipitation has occurred and to determine the chemical composition of carbides. In particular the content in the carbides of Fe, Ni, and W, elements which substitute Cr, can be accurately determined. HEAT-resisting chromium steels and alloys employed in the construction of gas carburizing and carbonitriding furnaces are subjected to a succession of oxidizing atmospheres during heating and cooling and to carburizing atmosphere during isothermal stage. Such a sequence of thermal cycling causes embrittlement and corrosion in the furnace materials. A quantitative study of the structural changes induced in the furnace materials has not received much attention in the past. However, utilization of the electron probe microanalyzer and other modern techniques has permitted a point analysis of the various phases formed and to follow their relative evolution. This paper gives results as regards the nature and composition of the carbide precipitation and the distribution of chromium in the matrix during only the carburizing periods. The structural changes subsequently produced during oxidizing periods will be presented eventually. METHODS AND MATERIALS Metallographic, X-ray diffraction and Castaing electron-probe microanalysis1 techniques have been employed to study carbide precipitation and evolution and the changes in the composition of the matrix in heat-resisting steels and alloys.

I have repeatedly said that the mechanical treatment of the metal forming a steel rail, during its manufacture, was comparatively of much greater importance than its chemical composition; and years of observation have confirmed and emphasized this fact. ' The comparison of the wear of the earlier steel rails with that of later ones, and to the great disadvantage of the latter, ia still being constantly made by railway oficials. And while some of us, with experience covering the whole history of the manufacture of steel rails, are aware of the great differences in the conditions governing their production at various periods, I do not think the engineering world generally appreciates the direct and imperative influence which these variations have had, and are having, upon the wearing-quality of the rails. In the earlier days, the steel was poured into ingots which would make but two 30-ft. rails not exceeding a weight of 60 lb. per yard—giving a mass weighing, say about 1,400 lb., and of a section of about 12 in. square. To-day the ingots are about 22 in. square, and weigh more than 4,000 lb. Of course, the interior of the larger ingots must remain hot and liquid longer than that of the smaller ones, and from this condition arises the steel-rail makers béte noire—segregation of the metalloids and piping of the steel. Ingots of the smallest section will pipe, but with the increase of the size, so will follow that of the interior cavity. This well-known tendency demands that special care should be exercised to avoid the evils arising from it.

The Secretary of the Treasury, acting through the National War Savings Committee, soliciting the support of patriotic associations in America in the sale of War Savings Stamps, has addressed the following letter to the President of the Institute: It is particularly desirable to have you urge the members of your association to give their assistance wholeheartedly, and to this end we urgently request that you write a letter to each of your members, outlining the aims of this campaign. That you may more easily draft your letter, we mention a few things in which your members could render a special service. Agencies and Sales Stations.-We desire immediately to establish several hundred thousand agencies and sales stations. It is as easy to sell a War Savings Stamp as it is in ordinary postage stamp, and we have launched a great drive to establish sales stations everywhere. The plan is simplicity itself! Your town, city, county or State Director can furnish you with supplies, posters and publicity matter. You can get the stamps from your post office or bank. Such stations should be at every pay window of manufacturing, industrial and mercantile establishments, and at every retail counter in the country. These stamps should be the easiest bought merchandise in the world, and when these agencies are established this end will have been accom-plished. Therefore, please lay extra pressure on the thought of immediately establishing these sales stations.

THE continuous vacuum filter, whether it be a vertical or horizontal disk, inside or outside drum, when properly applied is a very effective device for dewatering fine solids. Because of the number of variables that affect its performance, however, it is not possible to obtain consistently maximum moisture reduction in an operating plant. This paper presents a method for determining the average cake moisture and the variations in cake moisture to be anticipated when dewatering fine solids by continuous vacuum filters under normal operating conditions.

MECHANIZATION of American coal mining continues to make rapid progress. Economic pressure will compel abandonment of manual methods wherever possible and will also provide the incentive needed for the improvement of machines and mining systems. However, rapid progress may be made along strictly technological lines and at the same time much slower progress in approaching maximum productivly and efficiency. One can well ask, just how efficient are mechanized mines, and to what extent is productivity affected by the mental attitude of management and workers?

Galvanic contact, occurring between electrically conducting minerals in flotation pulps, may affect the nature of mineral surfaces and influence their floatabilities. Rest potential and galvanic current measurements were made on an electrode combination of pyrite and pyrrhotite under nitrogen, air and oxygen aeration conditions. The results were correlated with their oxygen-consuming characteris- tics and flotation behaviors. The galvanic contact improved the floatability of pyrrhotite, but adversely affected that of pyrite. Auger electron spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy indicated that the formation of hydroxide or oxide and sulfate species of iron on pyrrhotite decreased, whereas that on pyrite increased when these minerals were held in contact. An electro- chemical mechanism was proposed for the observed behaviors.
