Some of the basic problems in understanding elec-tromigration in metals are discussed, along with the attempts that are being made to handle them. One such problem is the effect of the electrostatic forces. It is now acknowledged that the momentum exchange with charge carriers plays generally a dominant role in the driving force but the question remains to what extent the electrostatic force may still be effective. The electromigration of interstitial impurities is also an area which presents some intriguing questions. For the substitutional impurity, moving by the vacancy mechanism under the influence of an electric field, the correlation considerations are somewhat more complex than have been previously recognized. Another problem of basic importance in the calculution from first principles is the strength of the "electron friction" force, say for a simple one-band metal. A related problem growing out of the preceding is the prediction of the direction of the "electron wind" force for metals with band structure involving both holes and electrons. THE term electromigration has come to be used to describe the flow of matter in condensed phases carrying high electronic currents such as metals and alloys, whereas one usually reserves the term electrolysis for situations where the current is largely ionic, particularly in the liquid state such as molten salts. It follows that the mass transport number in electromigration is always very small, of the order of 10-7. Studies of electromigration date back some 30 years but the modern period would appear to date from the work of Seith and Wever1 who in the mid 1950's first incorporated markers to display mass motion relative to the lattice and first suggested that the direction of the mass flow was primarily determined by the sign of the charge carriers. Since that time interest in the field has grown steadily and more rapidly recently as certain technological applications became apparent. Chief of these is certainly the deleterious effects that electromigration can cause, even at relatively low temperature, to current-carrying elements in integrated circuitry.2 These phenomena have been the subject of intense study and considerable ingenuity. On the constructive side electromigration has proved a useful tool in the purification of certain metals.3 The interest of this paper is, however, centered more on the basic aspects of the subject than on its technological applications. That high electric currents should give rise to mass flow in metals and that the driving force should be more directly associated with momentum exchange with the charge carriers than with the electrostatic field are ideas that no longer cause surprise or particular interest. The field has matured to the point where the general concepts are widely accepted and continued progress in basic understanding rests on more detailed and quantitative exploration. It is the purpose of this paper to point out what are some of the current problems. As a result, we expect to raise more questions than we answer. The first of these will be the role of electrostatic forces, if any, in electromigration. A second section will deal with the electromigration of interstitials. A third and final section treats with electromigration of substitutional impurities or of the matrix atoms themselves. ELECTROSTATIC DRIVING FORCE In the conceptual treatments of electromigration it has been customary to write the driving force in terms of an effective charge number Z* and to divide it into two terms F = e£Z* = e£[Zel- z(pd/Nd)(N/p)(m*\m*\)] [1] The first of these represents the electrostatic force under immediate consideration in this section and the second and usually dominating term for metals arises from momentum exchange with charge carriers, commonly called the "electron drag" term. As can be seen it is set proportional to the electrons per atom, z, and the ratio of the specific resistivity of the moving entity to the corresponding resistivity per matrix atom. The (m*/Im*I) factor takes into account the fact that the sign of the charge carrier determines the sign of the driving force. The specific resistivity of the moving entity is averaged over its path. In the case of motion of the matrix atoms by vacancies this gives rise to approximately one-half the resistivity at the saddle point since the scattering power of the atom at its equilibrium position bordering the vacancy differs only slightly from that of a normal matrix atom. Although the formulation of the "electron drag" term in Eq. [I] is based on a highly simplified model for electron defect scattering, the essential features implicit in the expression are common to all the theoretical approaches that have so far appeared in the literature.4-6 As for Zel, most treatments of electromigration have included the quantity as the parameter which measures the direct interaction of the electrostatic field with the ion and equated it to the nominal valence of the latter. However, there has been considerable discussion whether this interaction may not be 0 in many cases.6 If the moving ion is always enveloped by the same distribution of shielding charge, then clearly its motion will not involve any work done by the electric field and one can expect there will be no electrostatic force exerted on such a neutral composite. From this point of view the shielding charge around the ion would be said to be complete and hence the entity within the Debye shielding sphere would be unaffected by the electrostatic field per se. There is, however, the prospect that, as the moving ion progresses, new charge comes in to participate in the shielding action

The New London copper mine, about 8 1/2 miles east of Frederick, Md., was visited by the writers for a few hours in the spring of 1909 and the following brief notes on ore specimens collected are presented as a contribution to studies in chalcocite ores. For certain data on the structural and areal geology of this portion of Maryland the writers are under obligation to the unpublished notes and maps of Arthur Keith. The detailed study of the ores is the work of B. S. Butler. The deposit here discussed has many similarities to those of the Virginia district of Virginia and North Carolina, which have been described by Gratonl and Laney,2 except that in the deposits of the New London mine chalcocite is by far the most important ore mineral, while in the Virginia deposits bornite is commonly the most important sulphide. In the New London occurrence calcite is the most important gangue mineral. Field relations The -town of Frederick lies in the center of a narrow belt of limestone ranging in age from Ordovician on the east to Cambrian on the west. This belt is about + mile wide at Noland's Ferry, on the Potomac, and broadens to a width of 3 miles at Frederick. The general direction is east of north. The eastern boundary is, in places, a fault plane along which a series of metamorphic rocks of presumptive pre-Cambrian age have been thrust up. These ancient rocks, for several miles east and west of New London, are phyllites in the main, but closely inter-folded near the New London mine are long, narrow lenses of epidote

In the metallurgy of precious metals, it has been standard practice for years to use cyanogen compounds, so it was but natural that early investigators in the field of flotation should consider these compounds as possible flotation reagents. In Australian Patent 9508, of 1913, alkali cyanides were described as suitable reagents for the separation of heavy sulfide minerals, the reagents being employed either in an alkaline or neutral circuit. In U. S. Patent 1236501, of 1917, to John M. Tibbet, the use of cyanide in conjunction with soda ash or lime is described. One of the claims of this patent reads, "An improvement in the cyanide process for the treatment of ores comprising, mixing the ore with cyanide solution and oil and alkali: emulsifying the oil in the presence of the ore, the alkali and the cyanide solution, floating a portion of the values in the pulp by producing gas bubbles in the mixture and removing the values floated." More recently, Sheridan and Griswold, in U. S. Patents 1421585 and 1427235, describe a somewhat similar process and have successfully introduced it in the mill of the Timber Butte Milling Co. U. S. Patent 1429544, of 1922, to Stevens, describes the use of double cyanides of copper, zinc, and lead. The success of cyanide as a reagent in the differential flotation of lead and zinc sulfides in highly complex ores is proof that these patents have a solid foundation. Although the technique of their application to particular ores has been worked out in many cases, no one, so far as is known, has attempted to describe the nature of the action of the cyanide or to determine the ideal conditions for its application. It was the purpose of the present investigation to gather information on these points. This paper is a discussion of pelletizing systems developed over the last 15 to 20 years for the agglomeration of fine iron ore concentrates. Five different pelletizing systems are now in commercial use in the U.S., and for the purposes of comparison, estimated operating costs and capital costs for the construction of four of them are included. Capacities of existing commercial plants are examined, together with the anticipated capabilities of plants presently being built or projected. In just 21 years, the art of pelletizing iron ore concentrates has reached maturity with mastery of the separation of finely divided concentrates from low-grade iron ores and their agglomeration into pellets containing about 65% iron. This accomplishment has firmly established an improved feed for the blast furnace, with resulting benefits in faster reduction of burdens and greater economy of operation. The present production capacity of pelletizing facilities in the U.S. is about 20 million tons annually, and it is expected to double by 1970. The rapid expansion of pelletizing in the U. S. has been closely observed in European countries, notably in Sweden and Germany, where pioneer agglomerating techniques were developed early in this century. PELLETIZING PLANTS AND PROCESSES Twelve commercial pelletizing plants are presently in operation in the U. S. and Canada. An equal number are in various stages of engineering and construction, and many others are being considered. The pelletizing systems currently employed include shaft furnaces, horizontal grates using three different airflow arrangements, and grate kilns. The capacity of pelletizing operations in North America is shown in Table I. All of these plants are integrated with the mine, the ore-crushing facilities and the concentrating plant and are equipped with storage and loading-out facilities for the product. Normally, a pelletizing plant is composed of a shuttle conveyor above the receiving bins; balling equipment; a heat-hardening system including the necessary auxiliaries such as furnaces, burners and controls, ducts, fans, meters and instrumentation; fines recovery equipment; and product handling equipment. Also included are the necessary auxiliaries and utilities such as boilers or power plant; oil unloading and storage facilities; coal unloading storage, grinding and distribution facilities; and bentonite or other additive storage and distribution equipment. Shaft Furnaces: Vertical shaft furnaces used in this country are limited to the treatment of natural magnetite concentrates containing minor quantities of residual fluxing elements. Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of the shaft furnace with balling, feeding and pellet-handling equipment. An elevation of a shaft furnace is shown in Fig. 2. A commercial shaft furnace unit is about 45 ft in height with a 6 x 14-ft rectangular cross section and has a nominal production rate of approximately 50 gross tons of pellets per hour. The upper portion of the furnace shaft is constructed of fire brick as protection from the high process temperatures involved. The lower portion of the shaft is lined with abrasion-resistant brick to withstand erosion from the fired pellets. Rectangular-shaped, refractory-lined and insulated combustion chambers are situated on each side of the shaft furnace. Oil or gas is burned to produce high temperature gases which are forced into the furnace through ports located near the top of the combustion chambers. The shaft furnaces operate at a pressure of approximately 6 psi. Pellets are fed into the top of the furnace by a pantographic feeder designed to produce the desired pellet stockline. The furnace is kept filled at all times and pellets are fed and discharged from the furnace at the same rate. In early development, 10 to 12 lb of solid fuel was incorporated in the pellets. However, the main source of process heat is now derived from the combustion chamber gases. In some instances no solid fuel is used. The pellet movement in the shaft furnace is counter-current to the flow of gases. Ambient air is introduced through louvers at the lower end of the furnace, at about 6 psi, cooling the fired pellets and supplementing the heat of the high temperature gases from the combustion chamber ports. INTRODUCTION The stratified deposits of the coal measures are strongly laminated and exhibit a high degree of anisotropy. The stronger rocks in the sequence possess joints and shear planes, the coal itself has a closely spaced cleat pattern, and the softer rocks are capable of flowage. To calculate the general distribution of stress in such a medium by analytical means based on the theories of elasticity is difficult, and has not yet been satisfactorily achieved. Nevertheless, some estimate is required to aid the design of supporting pillars and permit the correct siting of main roadways. This is important when laying out districts for longwall extraction, particularly if the results of previous experience are not available in the area to be exploited. Although elastic stress analyses, including finite element analysis, may not be very appropriate, the basic equilibrium conditions will apply. These, combined with logical deductions based on observed fact, can be used to give appropriate solutions which experience has shown to be capable of giving acceptable results in the design of pillars associated with longwall workings. Constancy of cover load is one of the fundamental equilibrium conditions. When mining below ground, the cover is not removed, therefore the average vertical load after mining must equal the initial cover load. If mining produces a local decrease in load in any particular area, it must be balanced by an equivalent increase in load nearby. Bending moments in the strata above are capable of compensating for the turning moments which this redistribution of load may produce, and the existence of a "rear abutment", much discussed between 1950 and 1960, is not an essential equilibrium requirement. If the distribution of vertical stress is plotted three-dimensionally, then the load on any small element of area 6S will be o.6S, where o is the average stress. This also represents the volume of the "stress envelope" which lies above 6s. By making the individual areas very small and summing together, it is possible to show that the total load on any particular area can be found by calculating the volume of the stress distribution envelope which lies above it. A similar consideration applies to the stress distribution in a two-dimensional situation. If the stress distribution curve is drawn, then the area below any portion will represent the load per unit depth of section. For example, Figure 1 represents the possible stress distribution across a caved waste and associated ribside. If AW is the load deficiency [ ] These loads must balance, therefore area AW = AS, and if one can be deduced, the other will then be known. Attempts have been made to measure stress distributions in the ribside and in the waste. Stress meters in soft rocks such as the coal measures have not proved very effective. Those based on the measurement of strain have experienced difficulty in strata capable of flowage, high modulus stress meters suffer from cross sensitivity, and overcoming to obtain absolute stress is almost impossible. Load measuring instruments left in the waste have also proved largely ineffective, mainly as a result of the difficulties of protecting the leads in a caving environment. Certain logical deductions, however, can be made about the conditions in the waste. CONDITIONS IN THE WASTE Over the area of the waste the surface trough which develops is remarkably consistent, despite the geological variations which occur from coalfield to coalfield. In Britain, an accuracy of 210% is claimed for subsidence prediction based on width of extraction and depth of cover (National Coal Board, 1975). The subsidence in the USA is more variable (Adamek and Jeran, 1981), particularly with respect to the point of inflexion, but the same general pattern occurs. At the shallower depths the somewhat harder roof strata involved in the caving in the USA may suffer less compaction, giving reduced values of subsidence. THE development by the U. S. Bureau of Mines of a process for purifying manganese by electrolysis has stimulated interest in manganese alloys. While recent publications have shown some alloys of manganese and copper to possess rather unusual properties, none have included information on tensile properties, which have an important bearing on the usefulness of the alloys. Manganese-copper alloys can be heat-treated, since the single phases that exist at high temperatures may be retained by quenching. According to Persson,1 when quenched alloys containing from about 30 to nearly 100 per cent manganese are reheated, alpha manganese is precipitated (Fig. I). Calculations based on Persson's X-ray data indicate that this decomposition is accompanied by a change in volume of as much as 5 per cent. The reason that this large volume change has not been noted probably is the slow rate at which equilibrium is reached by these alloys. In an investigation on hardening by cold-work and heat-treatment, Dean and Anderson' found that quenched alloys increase in hardness with manganese content and that high-manganese alloys harden very slowly with cold-work, while high-copper alloys harden much more rapidly. Heat-treatment has little effect on manganese-copper alloys containing less than 40 per cent Mn, and affects those alloys containing more than 40 per cent in accordance with their manganese content and heat-treating temperature. Dean and Anderson4 also found that cold-work increased electrical resistance of alloys containing from 50 to 80 per cent Mn, and that heat-treatment of alloys containing from 40 to 96 per cent Mn altered the electrical resistance considerably. Dean, Anderson and Potter5 have shown that the high vibration damping capacity that characterizes manganese-copper alloys containing 40 to 90 per cent Mn is affected by cold-work and heat-treatments. Highest vibration damping capacity at low stresses was obtained by heating for 2 hr. at 450°C. (842°F.) after quenching from solution temperatures. Preparation of Alloys.-The alloys for these tests were melted in a 17-lb. basic-lined high-frequency induction furnace using electrolytic manganese, grade A ingot copper and a 70-30 Cu-Mn master alloy (69.80 per cent Cu, 0.12 Fe, 0.04 Si, 0.006 S, 0.07 C, balance Mn). The manganese was heated slowly to expel excess dissolved gases and melted before the addition of copper. No fluxes or covers were used. The melts were cast in tapered iron molds and the ingots were reduced 90 per cent when forged to ½ -in. rounds. These rods were given 2-hr. solution treatments at temperatures that depended upon the composition (Table I). Fresh waters and the presence of clay in many Rocky Mountain and West Coast sands require special methods of log analysis. Archie's saturation equation requires addition of a shale correction term, and the SP equation must also be modified to account for clays. Suitable equations were developed several years ago, but have not been widely used due to the algebraic complexity. A computer-oriented method has now been developed to overcome this problem. The basic shaly sand equations are rearranged in four different ways to permit solution for various sets of available input data. Essential to application of the method is the correction of observed SP values to those that would be observed if the resistivity of the formation waters were exactly interchangeable with the activity. A graphic method for doing this is given. Where conditions require consideration of the effect of clay in the sands, the method presented has been found to improve the accuracy of water-saturation determinations. INTRODUCTION Log interpretation in many Rocky Mountain and West Coast basins is complicated by rapid vertical and lateral changes in water resistivity. Calculation of formation water resistivity from the SP curve becomes difficult in zones that contain clay, since changes in SP deflection may be due to changes in either clay content or water salinity. In hydrocarbon-producing reservoirs, the problem is further complicated because hydrocarbon saturation also reduces the SP.1 A log interpretation system using computers has been developed to provide a solution to this problem, based on equations proposed by de Witte.2 Four different simultaneous solutions of de Witte's equations have been made. Each solution method uses a different set of input data as independent variables. Thus, a choice of solution method is possible, depending upon the logs run and the availability of other data. Two of the solutions do not require a knowledge of water resistivity. This system is intended to be used primarily in multiple sandstone-shale sequences of low and moderate resistivities where the principal contaminant in the sandstones is clay. However, where sufficient regional data are available, interpretation in single-zone sandstone reservoirs can also be improved by using the method. THEORY AND HISTORY OF SHALY SAND ANALYSIS The log interpretation formula originally proposed by Archie3 in 1941 is applicable only to rock-fluid systems wherein the rock has negligible electrical conductivity. In 1949, Patnode and Wyllie4 showed that if the rock itself can be considered conductive due to the presence of clay, a different calculation approach is necessary. During the following years, this problem was investigated at great length, as was the related problem of the effect of rock conductivity on the SP.5-11 These investigations established functional relationships between SP, resistivity, water saturation and water resistivity for such a formation. Refs. 2 and 12 provide summaries of these studies. Unfortunately, practical use of these relationships required that water resistivity be known independently from the SP. Although log interpretation methods for rock systems containing clay were proposed at that time,' they were not generally accepted for routine use. There are three principal reasons for this. First, in many field situations involving high-salinity water, rock conductivity may be neglected (even if present) without introducing appreciable error. This may be seen by considering the following expression for waier-saturated rock.' 1/R2=1/R1+1/FRn....(1) where 1/R, is conductivity due to clay. As Rw becomes small, I/FRw becomes much greater than 1/R, which may be neglected. Where 1/R, may be neglected, the sandstone is called clean. If the term may not be neglected, the sandstone is termed dirty or shaly. For resistivity purposes, the classification between clean and shaly sands then depends not only upon the conductivity due to shale in the sand, but also upon the resistivity of the associated water (shale is used here to mean surface condition due to disseminated clay). A sand of given conductivity might safely be treated as clean in association with high-salinity water, but would require shaly sand methods if associated with fresher waters. Shaly sand methods are not required in many areas having saline waters; but in Rocky Mountain and West Coast sands having relatively fresh waters (often more than 0.3 ohm-m resistivity at formation conditions), the shaly sand methods are needed. Errors Rw calculations from the SP due to the presence of shale are likewise related to water salinity. In saline water formations drilled with fresh mud, the ratio of mud filtrate resistivity to water resistivity is high, the SP is large and the presence of shale can introduce large errors in water resistivity calculated by the conventional method. When the resistivity ratio is low, the errors are smaller. At zero SP, no error would result from shale. Thus, from the SP viewpoint, a given rock could be shaly if associated with a saline water, and clean in association with a fresh water, which is the opposite of the resistivity-oriented definition above.

THIS year's Chairman of the Mineral industry Education Division is, like his predecessors, no novice in that field, having been in 1928 Chairman of the Engineering Education Committee which labored so well that it was enlarged into a Division of the Institute's activities . For almost a quarter of a century lie has been a dean in mining and engineering schools, with considerable experience before that as a teacher. A native-born New Englander (June 23, 1881), he naturally went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received the Bachelor's degree in mining in 1904. Just why a Fitchburg. Massachusetts boy yearned to he a mining engineer he has never explained, but why should any boy ever have to explain why lie wants t? be a mining engineer? Like the old rhyme about the reasons why a man should drink, "any other reason why" is adequate..

Experimental evidence was obtained in support of the idea that cleavage fracture can be initiated by dislocation pile-up. The high ductility of MgO crystals when tested in bending comPared to their relative brittleness in tension was explained on the basis that large pile-ups are more likely in a tension specimen. CLEAVAGE fractures have been a problem of major concern for many years. A number of large steel structures have failed in a brittle manner, usually suddenly and without warning; often the failures occurred for no obvious reason and at nominal stress levels well within the generally accepted range. A great deal of data have been collected about factors that contribute to failures,1 but the physics of the fracture process has never been revealed. cottrel12 has recently developed a theory of brittle fracture in ductile materials which was based upon the concept that dislocations moving on two intersecting planes can unite to form a crack nucleus. This theory accounts for the known effect of grain size and for the effect of testing temperature. There has, as yet, been no experimental evidence published that would substantiate this or the earlier theories based on stress concentrations due to piled-up dislocations. The study reported herein was conducted to obtain information that would either substantiate or disprove the

There are no data available of shipments until 1858, and then estimated, when railroad service became available. By reason of the iron made in the county, and the large amounts of salt, the tonnage used locally was quite large, and until 1860 these are estimated from the probable salt and iron production. After 1859 the tonnages shipped by rail are partly estimated from the total shipments of the Allegheny Valley Railroad from four counties. It is believed that the totals are below, rather than above, what the actual production was. While considerably larger for the same years than figures given by the Secretary of Internal Affairs and census reports, these data were always too low in those days, partly because of lack of facilities for gathering them, but more largely because of the strong prejudice existing in those days against furnishing such data to any governmental agencies.

The trend toward utilization of low grade iron ores means that more efficient methods must be developed for their concentration. The collecting ability of fatty acids derived from fish oils has been extensively investigated by Cooke.' Tuna oil, a byproduct of the tuna canning industry, is one of the lower priced fish oils. Utilization of tuna oil fatty acids as collectors in the flotation of iron ore might be economically feasible under certain market conditions, especially if their efficiency were high. Crude or unfractionated tuna oil fatty acids, and five fractions derived therefrom, were tested for their ability to concentrate a commercial specularite ore from northern Michigan. A commercial fatty acid derived from tall oil, and commonly used in nonsulfide flotation, was used as a reference. The crude fatty acids were obtained by simple saponification of tuna oil. Fractions A and B were obtained by acetone precipitation of the crude acids at -5O and -2S°C, respectively. Fraction C was obtained by a partial fractional distillation at 12S°C and at a pressure of 3y in a centrifugal molecular still in order to remove the shortest and longest chain fatty acids of tuna oil as well as oxidation products present in the original mixture. Fractions D and E were prepared by a chilling process in order to precipitate the unwanted saturated fatty acids. Yields and iodine values of the materials used are listed below: The seven samples were used as collectors in a laboratory procedure patterned after the commercial process for flotation of Michigan specularite ore. The annual meeting of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America was held on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 1918, at the Engineers' Club, New York, to elect officers and councillors for the ensuing year, to receive the reports of its retiring officers, and for the transaction of any business which might properly be considered. As usual, the meeting was divided into two sessions; the first, more properly the business session, was called to order at 2:30 p.m., with an attendance of 17 members; the second session took place at 8:30 p. m., immediately following an informal dinner, at which 40 guests and members participated. The latter was particularly interesting because it gave the meeting an opportunity to absorb first-hand information regarding the present crisis in Russia. Messrs. F. W. Draper and J. P. Hutchins, the latter a member and long resident in Russia, were the speakers of the evening.

Discussion of the paper of M. E. Lormbardi,. presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 9S, February, 1915, pp. 209 to 215. I. N. KNAPP, Ardmore, Pa.-Some years ago I made a swinging spider to carry a string of casing in a way somewhat similar to that described in this paper. The ground I tried it in was too soft for its successful operation. The spider had a central one-flange bushing to carry the slips. Under this flange and on top of the spider was a properly protected ball runway, or ball bearing, which permitted rotating the casing when it was in place and supported by the slips.

AS PREVIOUSLY announced, the semi-centennial meeting of the Institute is to be held at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on Sept. 12, 13, 14, and 15. An interesting program of technical sessions and excursions is now being prepared by the Local Committee. At the time of going to press the program had not been completed in sufficient detail to permit its being pub¬lished in this number. The detailed program will be published in the September MINING AND METALLURGY, which will be printed in time to be distributed before the Wilkes-Barre Meeting. It may be said in advance, however, that the Com¬mittee has progressed so far in its work that we are assured of one of the -most notable meetings the Insti¬tute has held and that members will miss a rare .treat if they do not attend. The many trips and excursions, as well as the banquet, will be -given to the members as a compliment from the members of the Local Com¬mittee. . . The paper by Howard Eavenson on the Lynch Plant of -the United States Coal and Coke Co. will be illustrated by lantern slides and moving pictures. One of the most appropriate discussions will be that opened by Prof. J. F. Kemp on the Stratigraphy of the Anthracite Region; this also will be amply illustrated.

Within the Northern Pennine Orefield, England, intersections of fluorite veins are generally richest in ore, and their recognition enables investigation of the ore potential of the intersecting bodies. A method, based on routine analysis of fluorite for yttrium, has been used with success in mines of the district to predict the location of intersections in partially developed fluorite-bearing ore bodies. This short note is intended as a brief introduction; the details of United Kingdom applications are to be published at a later date. Geology The Northern Pennine Orefield is the second largest fluorspar-producing region in Britain. The associated minerals galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, barite, and witherite have all been extensively worked in the past but, with the exception of a single barytes mine, all of these operations are now abandoned. Galena alone is recovered as a byproduct of fluorspar beneficiation. At the present time two companies are producing about 38,000 tpy of fluorspar from high grade vein ore bodies, and a number of concerns are actively prospecting in old lead workings. The mineralization is localized in veins and replacement flats within favorable lithologies in an alternating limestone, sandstone, shale sequence. Since the thickness of individual beds is not great (generally less than 20 m), vein bodies tend to be ribbon-shaped, with length greatly exceeding width and height (Dunham). They thus present difficult exploration targets for conventional diamond drilling techniques. Ore grade varies greatly along the veins, which can change rapidly in character from mineral stained fault gouge to massive mineral bodies up to 10 m in width. It has been known for a very long time that the richer ore bodies tend to be associated with vein intersections in favorable beds. It is assumed that vein fissure intersections provided vertical channelways through which hot ore-bearing brines were able to ascend from deeper cavities in the sequence. Thus investigation of intersections at other horizons generally yields further ore bodies. Technique The relative concentration of yttrium in fluorite is a good indicator, in the North Pennines, of the direction of flow of mineralizing fluids. In all of the ore bodies so far studied in detail in this region, the concentration of yttrium increases markedly in the direction of vein intersections that are believed to have acted as feeder zones to the remainder of the bodies. The reason for this relationship is probably connected with the degradation of soluble rare earths-fluoride complexes by the changes in various physicochemical parameters of the hydrothermal fluids as they entered the ore body cavities from the feeder zones. The simultaneous release of free fluoride ions also contributed to the increased ore values in these intersection zones. Yttrium values in fluorite taken from a longitudinal traverse of the western ore body, Redburn mine, Rookhope, are plotted in [Fig. 1.] The position of a major vein branch and three cross veins are clearly indicated by yttrium maxima. The cross veins themselves contain up to 2.5 m of low grade fluorspar ore. The exact positions of B and C were unknown previous to the geochemical survey. Similar results have been obtained for several other veins and ore bodies in the area. Clean fluorspar was collected as bulk samples from within 300 mm of the vein wall and, since the vein infilling is simple, with mineral growth from the walls inward, analyses of the samples are considered comparable along the length of the ore body. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the definition of compressibility and to present a uniform basis upon which instantaneous compressibilities of liquids and gases can be compared. The equations gaverning the instantaneous compressibilities of imperfect gases are derived and the concept of pseudo-reduced compressibility is introduced. Part of the data presented by Brown, Katz et a1 on compressibility factors for natural gases has been rearranged. A graph of pseudo-reduced compressibility vs pseudo-reduced pressure for various pseudo-reduced temperatures is presented. The need for additional work in relating the compressibilities of liquids and gases is discussed. This information should be of value to reservoir engineers in making non-steady state performance calculations in gas reservoirs. It should be of further use irz pointing the direction for additional research in the nature of liquid and gas compressibilities. INTRODUCTION With the increasing use of steady and non-steady state well and reservoir data, there is a corresponding increase in the importance of the various factors entering into such calculations. Increasing emphasis is being placed on the necessity for obtaining reasonably accurate estimates of the physical properties of the reservoir fluids well in advance of the more accurate laboratory data. One such factor is the isothermal coefficient of expansion of the media which are transmitting and attenuating the non-steady state pressure waves. The average isothermal coefficient of expansion, or "compressibility" is a complex function controlled by the physical properties of the formation and the fluids contained therein. The isothermal expansion coefficients for reservoir gases are usually quite variable, in many cases being highly-pressure sensitive. The coefficients for reservoir liquids tend to be pressure sensitive, but not nearly so much as reservoir gases. The coefficients for solids, usually expressed in terms of a "modulus of elasticity" are relatively insensitive to pressure variations within their elastic limits. For this reason, and also because many previous applications have been limited to rel- atively small pressure ranges, there has been a tendency to ignore the variable nature of isothermal expansion coefficients and treat them as constants. Also, the term "compressibility" by which these coefficients are generally designated is commonly confused with a similar term, z, used to define the deviation of an imperfect natural gas from the perfect gas laws. A clear distinction should be made at the outset between the term "compressibility", which is an isothermal coefficient of expansion of a substance, and the term "compressibility factor", z, which refers to the deviation of a gas from the perfect gas laws. Although the scope of this paper is limited to the compressibility of single phase natural gases, it is definitely related to the problem of accurately estimating the compressibilities of single phase hydrocarbon reservoir liquids, which will form the basis of a future presentation. BASIC PRINCIPLES The coefficient of isothermal compressibility of a substance, c, is usually determined from pressure-volume or pressure-length -measurements depending upon whether the substance is single phase gas, liquid, or solid. A convenient method for making such estimates for a finite change in pressure and volume at constant temperature is to use the well known equation V1-V2/V1 (p2 - p1) .....(1) Eq. 1 is negative because the volume of a confined substance decreases as the pressure is increased. In this case V1 > V2 and p2 > p1. This equation is useful in approximating the compressibilities of single phase gases and liquids undergoing small pressure changes. It is evident, however, that this equation is almost identical with the determination of Young's modulus of elasticity for solids. If the assumption is made that change in length is directly proportional to change in volume, as would very nearly be the case for a steel rod in tension within its elastic limit, then E5=-L1 (p2 - p1)/L1 - L2 .......(2) in which E. is the isothermal expansion coefficient, or Young's modulus of elasticity, for a solid.
