In the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute for 1881 (vol. ii., page 379), will be found an article upon this subject. The analyses there reported mere of samples taken from an ingot made especially rich in impurities and then cast in a sand-mould in order to give the elements a better chance to redistribute themselves, on account of the steel solidifying more slowly than when cast in an iron mould. Wishing to ascertain how much, if any, segregation takes place when the steel is cast in the ordinary way, I placed the subject in the hands of Mr. W. J. Olcott, a graduate of the Michigan University, who has carefully collected and analyzed samples taken from different parts of ingots and billets. In this undertaking he found himself somewhat embarrassed on account of being distant from steel-works, and therefore unable to supervise the selection of samples. He found, however, a competent and willing aid in the person of E. F. Wood, M.E., chemist of the Pittsburgh Bessemer Steel Company, Limited, who has spared no pains in collecting the desired samples and furnishing drawings and descriptions of the ingots from which the samples were taken. In an earlier paper1, the author described a method of interpreting earth-resistivity curves, based on the theoretical investigation of a single horizontal underlying stratum. If the four-electrode system of Wenner is employed, the resistivity in a homogeneous soil is given by the formula where a is the electrode separation and R is the resistance of the earth between the two inner electrodes. If the earth is not perfectly homogeneous, the application of this formula gives an apparent specific resistance varying with the electrode separation. In the special case of the single horizontal underlying stratum, there is a surface layer of thickness h and resistivity p1 and a lower layer, extending to infinity, of resistivity pz. It has been shown by Lancaster-Jones2 that the apparent resistivity obtained by an application of equation 1 is related to the true resistivities, the depth h and the electrode separation a by an expression of the formhere pa is the apparent resistivity and F is a function (actually an infinite series), of the ratio h/a, and a reflection coefficient k = (p2 — p1)/(p2 + p1). For given values of h/a and k, the right-hand side of equation 2 can be calculated, and curves drawn showing the relationship between pa/p1, h/a and k. Such a set of curves for the case when p1 > p2 is given in Fig. 1. When pl is less than pz it is more convenient to use conductivity instead of resistivity. Hence, if oa = the apparent conductivity = lip, and a1 = the conductivity of the upper layer = l/pl, it follows that GeophyGical prospecting by earth-resistivity methods is frequently applied to investigation of structural problems in geology. Fig. 1 indicates a scheme of the general arrangement used in these methods of measurements. The battery (or generator) E is connected with two "current electrodes" I1 and I2. The current of intensity J, supplied by this battery, passes through the earth between these elcc- trodes. A potential difference U will be measured between two other electrodes V1 and Vz, called "potential electrodes." A detailed investigation was made of the phase diagram of silver-zirconium, particularly in the region 0 to 36 at. pct Ag. The system was found to be characterized by two intermediate phases Zr2Ag and ZrAg and a eutectoid reaction in which the -zirconium solid solution decomposes into a-zirconium and Zr2Ag. It was found that impurities in the range 0.05 pct from the iodide-type zirconium were sufficient to introduce deviations from binary behavior, and that with partial removal of these impurities an increase in the a-phase solid solubility limit from 0.1 to 1.1 at. pct Ag was observed. The phase diagram of the silver-zirconium system is of interest as an example of alloying a transition metal from the left side of the Periodic Table with a Group IB element. Silver would normally act as a univalent metal, its filled 4d-shell remaining undisturbed during the alloying. However, there is a possibility that some of the 4d electrons might transfer to the zirconium. An insight into such a question can occasionally be obtained by comparison of phase diagrams. The silver-zirconium system forms part of a more complete review of various solutes in zirconium in which these valency effects were studied.' Earlier work on the silver-zirconium system was done by Raub and Enge1,2 who investigated the silver-rich alloys. After the start of the present experhents, work on this system was reported by Kemper3 and by Karlsson4 which for the most part agrees with the phase diagram presented here. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were prepared by arc casting on a water-cooled, copper hearth with a tungsten electrode and in a pure argon atmosphere. Uniform solute composition was attained by multiple melting on alternate sides of the same ingot. Progressive improvements in the vacuum conditions inside the apparatus during the course of the experiments reduced the Vickers hardness increase of the pure zirconium control ingot from 10 to 20 points, observed initially, to negligible amounts at the end of the experiments. Such hardness changes in zirconium are a well known indication of purity. For example, -01 wt pct additions of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon increase hardness by 6, 10, and 3 VPN respectively. '9' Further verification that the final casting technique did not add a significant quantity of impurities was obtained when pure zirconium was arc cast and then isothermally annealed in the vicinity of the allotropic transition. The transition was always observed to take place over the same temperature range as in the original crystal bar. The alloy ingots were annealed in sealed silica capsules for times and temperatures which varied between 1 day at 1300°C and 60 days at 700°C. The best method found to prevent the reaction of the zirconium with the silica was foil wrapping of molybdenum or tantalum. With this method, samples of pure zirconium were found to be unchanged in hardness after annealing for 3 days at 1200°C. In most of the experiments the protection of these foils was supplemented by an additional layer of zirconium foil inside the molybdenum or tantalum foil. The alloys, foil, and the capsule were outgassed at pressures in the range 10 to l0-7mm Hg in the temperature range 800" to 1100°C before each anneal in order to remove hydrogen and other impurities, and to provide a suitable container for the high purity, inert atmosphere, which is essential in the annealing of zirconium. The temperature measurements were made with Pt/Pt + 10 pct Rh thermocouples calibrated frequently during the experiments against the melting points of zinc, aluminum, silver, gold, and palladium. For the longer anneals the sum of various temperature errors was generally well within ± 2°C. For short-time anneals and during thermal analysis the overall temperature error is considered to be within ± 0.5°C. The compositions of the alloys from the quenching experiments were determined by chemical analysis at Johnson Matthey and Company, Ltd., under the direction of Mr. F. M. Lever. The actual metallo-graphic samples were individually analyzed in every case, and prior to the analyses two or more sides of each specimen were examined to insure that the specimen was not segregated. The sum of the solute and solvent analyses was in each case within the range 99.9 to 100.1 pct. In the course of the experiments, minor impurities in the range 0 to 500 ppm were found to have significant effects on the zirconium-rich portion of the phase diagram. Discussion of the paper of Carl Scholz, published in Bi-monthly Bulletin, No. 22, July, 1908, pp. 551 to 559. HOWARD N. EAVENSON, Gary, W. Va. (communication to the Secretary*) :-For some time before the publication of Mr. Scholz's paper, I had been collecting data bearing upon its subject, and I now take pleasure in presenting my results to the Institute in the form of a discussion. It has long been a matter of common opinion among mining-men that mice-explosions are, more frequent during the colder, or winter months, than during the warmer ones, and it is a matter of common knowledge among them that the air-ways and road-ways in most mines are much drier and are more in¬clined to be dusty during the winter than during the summer. In many mines, places which are wet and sloppy in the summer are dry and sometimes dusty during the winter. These changes, of course, can only be due to atmospheric conditions, and are caused by differences in temperature and humidity. Until recently, however, very little attention has been paid to the part that atmospheric conditions may play in mine-explosions, or, rather, to the effect they may have in rendering mine-conditions peculiarly dangerous, and in spreading and rendering more disastrous the effects of what would otherwise probably have been .small explosions. To show the difference in mine-conditions during sunnier .and winter months, I have tabulated in Table I. the results of 24 observations of hygrometric conditions in several different mines at different times of the year. Mines Nos. 1, 2, and 6 are located in the Pocahontas.coal -region, in McDowell couuty, W.Va., the first one being a shaft-mine shaft mine and the others drift. Mines 1A and 2A are drift-mines located in Logan county, W. Va. All of these are mines of fair size, but none of them has been in operation more than six years,

The partial molal volume of hydrogen is one of the parameters that describe the elastic interaction between the solute and the stress fields about inclusions, dislocations, and cracks. As such the partial molal volume is probably of importance in the elucidation of phenomena such as hydrogen embrittlement and hydrogen yield point. A knowledge of this quantity would also be helpful in thinking about the state of dissolved hydrogen in iron. However, because of the very low lattice solubility of hydrogen in iron the usual ways of determining the lattice expansion are not practicable. It is therefore of interest to apply the thermodynamics of stressed bodies to two sets of measurements of the effect of elastic stress upon the permeability of hydrogen in order to deduce a value of the partial molal volume, VH, of hydrogen dissolved in a iron. Beck ..' and previously de Kazinczy, observed that a uniaxial tensile stress increases the permeability of hydrogen in iron and in various steels. Beck et 01. employed Armco iron and A.I.S.I. 4340 steel, whereas de Kazinczy used a steel the composition of which was 0.13 C, 0.23 Si, 0.46 Mn, 0.006 P, and 0.038 S. Upon releasing the stress the permeability increment disappeared if the stress was below the elastic limit. Both investigators employed cathodic charging to introduce the hydrogen. de Kazinczy measured the permeation through a thin-walled tube by collecting the gas, whereas Beck et al. measured the permeation through sheets of various thicknesses by a very sensitive electrochemical technique. Both investigators measured the steady-state permeation at constant rate of hydrogen ion discharge, and Beck measured in addition the hydrogen diffusivity by a time-lag technique which is independent of the boundary conditions. Beck et al. and de Kazinczy found a linear relationship between log (J,/Jo) and the stress, where Ju/Jo is the ratio of the flux of hydrogen when the metal is under uniaxial tensile stress, a, to the flux under zero stress, for the same temperature and charging current. Beck et al. found in addition that the diffusivity of hydrogen is not changed by stress. Both investigators concluded that the observed change in permeability is due to an increase in hydrogen concentration, and furthermore that the increase in concentration is due directly to the thermodynamic effect of stress upon concentration. Accepting this assessment of the situation for reasons given below, one may use the equation3j4 in order to evaluate I/H, the partial molal volume of hydrogen. This equation is valid for the domain of a/E «¦ 1 (where E is the Young's modulus) and under the assumption that hydrogen expands the lattice isotrop-ically. From the data of Beck el al, one calculates V7H - 2.0 cu cm per g-atom, and from those of de Kazinczy one obtains 1.8 cu cm per g-atom. That the increase of concentration with stress is indeed of thermodynamic origin is attested to by the facts that the experimental results conform to the thermodynamic relation, Eq. [I], and that the results are the same whether a pure iron1 or each of two different steels172 is used. Neither of these facts wou1.d necessarily be expected if the effect of stress were, rather, to increase the ratio kn/k, of the kinetic factors of the following competing reactions: H(ads) — H (dissolved) Such a change of kinetics at the surface could be an alternative explanation of the effect of stress on the permeability. Although this writer does not deem this explanation to be the correct one for the reasons given above, it must be admitted that unambiguous proof that the phenomenon has a thermodynamic origin does not yet exist. Two kinds of experiments may be suggested. One is to plate a variety of metals on the input surface of the steel and repeat the stress experiment at a variety of hydrogen charging currents. The other is to employ somewhat thicker specimens in order to be able to apply uniaxial compressive stress. Eq. [I] shows that ln(c,/c,) depends on the sign of the stress, but it is difficult to see a physical basis for which k2/kl would depend on the sign of a. The transformation of eutectoid beryllium bronze has been quantitatively investigated at 550° and 592°C, the temperature region where the products of p decomposition are a fine lamellar eutectoid and a coarse lamellar aggregate which replaces the fine eutectoid with prolonged annealing. Metallographic evidence indicates that the coarse lamellar aggregate forms preferentially in the most densely lamellated regions of the fine eutectoid and favors the hypothesis that the development of the coarse lamellar aggregate in the fine eutectoid is due to the occurence of a cellular segregation reaction. WHEN eutectoid beryllium bronze (Cu-94 pct, Be-6 pct) is isothermally transformed at high temperatures in the and y region after quenching from the fl field, the principal initial decomposition process is G one of growth of approximately spherical nodules composed of a number of lamellar colonies of the a and y phases. After the initial reaction has proceeded substantially or completely, depending on the transformation temperature, a second reaction occurs wherein the fine lamellar eutectoid is replaced by a coarser lamellar aggregate composed of the same oand yphases.' This reaction is not simply a spheroidization of the initial fine eutectoid but the nucleation and growth of a coarser, structurally different, and more stable distribution of the @and yphases. Fig. 1 illustrates the replacement of the initial fine lamellar structure by a coarse lamellar aggregate. The a phase is the dark mottled constituent; the light constituent the y phase. The phase diagram for the copper-rich end of the Cu-Be system2 is shown in Fig. 2. The a phase has the face-centered cubic structure characteristic of copper-rich solid solutions. The B phase is a disordered body-centered cubic structure, while the y phase is body-centered cubic, ordered (CsC1, B2 type). A. viswanathanS investigating Debye patterns of Cu-6 pct Be discovered that a transitory phase appeared on very rapid quenching from the /3 region which was absent when the quenching velocity was moderate. The phase could be assigned a body-centtred cubic structure with a lattice parameter of 2.876. Tempering at 100°C for 2 hr after quenching resulted in complete disappearance of the phase. The work of Fillnow and Mack' is the only previously published study of the isothermal transformation of eutectoid beryllium bronze. Their study elucidated the nature of decomposition at various subcritical temperatures in an exploratory fashion. The purpose of the research reported in this paper was principally to obtain quantitative information on the isothermal decomposition of the fl phase and to clarify the relationships existing between the fine lamellar eutectoid and the coarse lamellar aggregate. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The material used in this investigation was an almost eutectoid Cu-Be alloy bar furnished by D.J. Mack. The alloy had been melted under a protective carbon cover and centrigugally cast into a graphite mold preheated to 490 "C. Segregation was minimized by violent agitation during melting and pouring. The analysis of the casting was 93.85 pct Cu, 5.60 pet Be with traces of Si, Mg, Mn, Co, and Al. To determine the minimum soaking time necessary to insure specimen homogeneity, a number of specimens were held in the P region at 788OC for times fron 1 min to 12 hr and isothermally transformed at 550°C. A study has been made of wet, autogenous grinding of disseminated copper ores, including testing of a large number of samples from. Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Chino mine. The grindability of the various samples was found to vary over an extremely wide range, even among samples taken from diflerent locations within the same ore body. These variations in grindability can be qualitatively correlated with the composition of the rock and the fracturing and alteration that had occurred. Because of the large-scale nonhomogeneity of disseminated copper ore bodies, extensive and careful testing of autogenous grinding is needed. An accurate correlation of the grinding data from various samples with the geology of the ore body and with mining plans will indicate if variations in grinding mill throughput can be avoided in practice by mixing or blending of mill feed and if, therefore, autogenous grinding can be applied successfully. In the past 15 years, comminution by primary autogenous grinding has been investigated and applied economically in the minerals industry, particularly in iron-ore processing. Successful application of primary grinding is described by A. A. Dor,l.' P. B. Dettmer,334 R. R. Turner, and W. F. McDermott." other authors describing the advantages of primary grinding include H. Hardinge,' R. T. Hukki,' D. S. Coyle" and F. C. Bond,"," to mention only a few. For the past several years, Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Metal Mining Div. Research Center has been investigating primary grinding of disseminated copper ores. Both fully autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding has been explored. Ores from three of Kennecott's western operating properties and from several development properties have been tested. Host rocks include diabase, schist, silicated and argillaceous limestones, shale, granite porphyry, quartzite, and granodiorite. The object of this paper is to supplement the general knowledge in the field of primary grinding by presenting information gained from the studies with the various disseminated copper ores. Data are presented which show that carefully considered test programs are required to determine the practicality of applying autogenous grinding to a specific mining-beneficiation operation. Particularly this is so if more than one rock type occurs within an ore body or if there are wide variations in the degree of rock alteration within a deposit. Extensive sampling and subsequent testing of the ores within a mine are required if serious pitfalls are to be avoided and good engineering data acquired. We hope that this presentation will stimulate studies to increase the understanding of the fracturing process applicable to large pieces of rock, a factor which is important in autogenous grinding. Test Facilities and Procedures Both pilot-scale and full-scale test facilities were used to investigate primary grinding characteristics of the disseminated copper ores. A 6-ft Hardinge Cascade mill, a 24-ft Hardinge Cascade mill, and a 5-ft Aerofall mill were used in the studies. The Cascade mills were operated wet, while the Aerofall mill was operated both wet and dry. The Cascade mills were operated both for fully autogenous and for semi-autogenous grinding; the Aerofall mill was operated only semi-autogenously. Fully autogenous grinding, as the term is used in this presentation, is defined as the direct grinding of coarsely crushed rock by the action of the rock mass. Semi-autogenous grinding is defined as the grinding of coarsely crushed rock with the rock mass supplemented by a steel ball charge. Most of the test work was done using the 6-ft Cascade mill, operated under fully autogenous grinding conditions. Only limited testing was conducted with the 5-ft Aerofall mill and only one ore was tested using the 24-ft Cascade mill. This presentation is concerned, therefore, primarily with fully autogenous, pilot-scale grinding in the Cascade mill. Fig. 1 presents a diagram of the test facilities used with the 6-ft Cascade mill. Principal test equipment consists of a 6-ft Cascade mill, an 18-in. spiral classifier, an elevator, a 2 x 9-ft belt feeder, a conventional integrating kilowatt-hour meter, and a recording wattmeter. In testing, feed charges, adjusted as to weight, were deposited as evenly as possible on the belt feeder every 15 min. The weight of each charge was adjusted to maintain a mill charge of 27 to 30% of mill volume. The classifier was adjusted to obtain the desired size-consist of the final product, generally at 20% + 100 mesh. After equilibrium was established in the circuit, the feed, mill discharge, classifier sand, and classifier overflow were sampled and their size distributions determined. During the sampling periods, the power drawn by the mill was measured to determine the energy consumed in the reduction of the size consist of the ore solids. Many fields, where the reservoir is composed of sandy layers, show great complexity because of the lack of continuity which results from a particular type of seditnentation. This complexity may be a factor of prime importance in studying reservoir drainage, especially in the displacement of oil by water or gas. This paper describes work done to study this heterogeneity and its influence in the exploitation of the fields of the lower Devonian sandy shale in the Fort Polignac Basin in Algeria. Two lines of research were followed. 1. On the border of the hasin, a detailed sedimentological study established rules for the distribution of the sandy zones, which furnished hypotheses necessary for devising a geologic model of the reservoir. A certain number of sandy zones were recognized and characterized by their sedimentation. 2. In the interior of the basin, production logs deterrnined the productivity profile. Study of these point data led to a description of the distribution of oil and gas phases in the reservoir so that the continuity of different zones between the wells could be deduced. These techniques were applied to the study of the lower Devonian sandy shale reservoir of Zarzaitine. The sedimentological study guiding the correlation work, with the aid of the conventional static data (logs and cores), led to the establishment of a useful geologic model of the reservoir. Production logs, thanks to the contribution of dynamic elements, permitted corrobora-tion of the model. In particular, the logs confirmed separation, as proposed by the sedimenfological study, of two comparable sandy groups by revealing the continuity of a thin impermeable layer, invisible on conventional logs. INTRODUCTION The heterogeneity of sandstone reservoirs considerably influences the distribution of fluids, as well as their displacement in the reservoir. Rational development of a field and maximum recovery of hydrocarbons are closely tied to an exact and precise knowledge of the intern architecture. We will try to show how it is possible I refine the knowledge of the reservoir by seeking qui different and varied sources of information. Productic geology, the group of techniques which leads to idei concerning reservoir architecture and its geometric descris tion, furnishes the framework of this undertaking. Of these techniques. those used so far are qui varied. Descriptive as well as quantitative, the technique partake as much of classical geology as of reservo science. They include (1) geologic studies of the enti basin, especially a stratigraphic and sedimentologic study of the reservoir member at its outcrop, detail1 observations of cores taken from wells and, finall oriented cores; (2) interpretation of geophysical dat (3) interpretation of electric logs, nuclear and sonic lo and dipmeters: (4) petrophysical study of the reserve on samples taken from wells; (5) reservoir dynamics (stu of the production history and, in particular, interpretati of production logs); and (6) analysis of the fluids a thermodynamic studies. This incomplete list could also include (1) study the migration of the fluids, (2) geochemistry (chemi characterization of the oils), (3) regional hydrodynamii and (4) injection and detection of tracers. If most of these techniques are classic, attention i nevertheless be called to applying two of the techniql in conjunction: the study of the reservoir member its outcrop and the study of dynamic distribution fluid phases in the reservoir through use of product logs, used in the study of the sandy shale reservoirs the lower Devonian of the Fort Polignac Basin, Alge in particular, their application to the study of the 2 zaitine field where they have led to a new and satisfact model of the reservoir will be described. THIS paper outlines a method for rapid production of flat, granular surfaces on many of the medium hard- alloys. Grinding wheels and fabrics on wheels are not used; the purpose is accomplished by rubbing on emery papers and on fine abrasives heaped on hand boards. The advantages of chromic acid in the solutions for etching nickel and copper alloys are explained. Steels may require an additional step in the mechanical smoothing owing to the lack of an ideal etchant. Chloric acid is a. rapid etchant for steel. Thirty-six photomicrographs illustrate the steps in smoothing and the clearness with which structures can be rapidly exposed. New structures in low-carbon steels are announced. After a little practice, many materials can be finished within two or three minutes. CUPRONICKELS In the previous papers on the metallography of copper and magnesium which the author has presented to this Institute there has been an attempt to demonstrate the advantages of minimizing the mechanical work of surfacing and depending more on chemical means; the present paper continues the research into a still wider field. It is obvious that the success of a chemical method for smoothing and etching depends almost entirely on the use of a suitable reagent. The etchant must remove the surface granulations and outline the structures. A very special type of reaction between reagent and metal must be displayed. Promiscuous corrosion or the intensification of the attack about local couples -formed by impurities or components must not be in evidence. There are several reagents that etch highly polished nickel and copper alloys very well. Acidified ferric chloride solutions, concentrated and dilute nitric acid solutions, and nitric and acetic acids in acetone have -been used to good advantage for the purpose. However, if they are expected to etch rather deeply-that is, smooth as well as characterize-the results may be far from satisfactory.

REGISTRATION and licensing of engineers is now being given consideration by a special committee of the Institute, authorized at the March meeting of the Board of Directors. The subject is one that has recently been or is now actively before engineering organizations in many of the States of the Union. In Washington, D. C., the Washington Society of Engineers and the local sections of ten national engineering societies, including the A.I.M.E., recently had a joint committee investigate the subject: this committee formulating a proposed law that has been presented to Washington engineers for their consideration. At the same time, the committee has summarized the reasons for and against registration of engineers in Washington, D. C. As many of these reasons are of more than local application, they are here reprinted so that all members of the A.I.M.E. may be informed on the subject. It is expected that some report of the Institute's Committee on Registration, State Councils and Professional Development will he made at some forthcoming meeting of the Board of Directors.

The interactions between oil drops and mineral surfaces have been examined for the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-quartz and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-hematite systems. The results have been interpreted using a electrical double layer interaction model, a "sweeping-penetration" model based on steric interactions and a free energy of adhesion model. The adsorption of long-chain ions at the mineral interface was also studied and found to follow a Fuerstenau-Modi model of combined Coulombic and chain-chain interaction forces. The basis of the emulsion flotation process and the feature which makes it differ from conventional flotation is: encounter, followed by adhesion, between oil drops and mineral particles which are suspended in an aqueous environment. The manner in which the adhesion between these two phases contributes to the flotation process may be through the formation of min-eral-oil drop-mineral linkages, mineral-oil drop-air bubble linkages, or a combination of both. Possible flotation mechanisms derived from these adhesion processes are shown schematically in Fig. 2 while Fig. 1 shows an example of the first mechanism for quartz particles which have been floated using a cetyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide (CTAB)-Nujol emulsion as collector. In Fig. 2 the three phases, mineral, oil, and air, for convenience have been shown as having approximately equal size. This would not always be the case in an actual emulsion flotation operation. For the flotation of sand-sized particles of approximately 0.5 mm diam, the mineral particles would be at least ten times the size of the largest emulsion drops present in the system, while in the flotation of —10u slime particles, the mineral phase may be of the same order of size as the oil phase. The air bubbles in a flotation cell are normally about 1 to 2 mm in diam and therefore, in general, would be larger than the oil drops. Although the relative size of the three phases does not alter the basic adhesion processes between oil drops, mineral particles, and air bubbles, which depend on the physical and chemical properties of the interfaces involved rather than on the extent of these interfaces, it does alter the degree of deformation of the oil drops and air bubbles which will occur on adhesion. For mechanisms 1 and 2 to take place, the oil-water and mineral-water interfaces must be partially replaced by a mineral-oil interface while in mechanism 2 there is the additional requirement that the oil-water and air-water interfaces must be replaced by an oil-air interface. In view of the importance of the oil drop-mineral particle encounter and subsequent adhesion stages to both of the emulsion flotation mechanisms discussed, a study has been made of some physicochemical factors which control these processes for Nujol-cetytri-methylammonium bromide (CTAB)-quartz and Nujol-sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) -hematite systems. Experimental Electrokinetic Measurements.—The zeta potential of mineral particles was measured using a streaming potential technique similar to that described by Fuerste-nau.1 The streaming potential was measured using a multirange electrometer while the plug conductivity was measured using a 50 cycle sec1 bridge. Measurements were made on 28 x 65 mesh particles. Contact Angle Measurements.—A captive bubble technique was used to measure the contact angles for air bubbles and oil drops. The angles were measured on fracture faces of unmounted minerals which proved easier to clean than polished mounted specimens and should more closely represent a flotation system. The progress made to date in the mineral dressing of complex Arkansas titanium ores is reported in this paper. Concentrates of rutile, a dioxide of titanium, were produced by treating a submarginal ore from the Magnet Cove Rutile Co., Inc., Magnet, Ark. The rutile recovery at present is 45 to 50 pct of the total TiO2 with the possibility of increased recovery with additional research. The work reported herein is part of a general study which will later include results of investigation of other titanium ore bodies in the Magnet, Ark., area. The fragile character of the rutile minerals, the softness of the gangue, the occurrence of pyrite and leucoxene, and the considerable proportion of extremely small size rutile in the presence of montmorillonite- and illite- type clays in the Magnet Cove open-pit mine are the important factors in the mineral dressing of this submarginal rutile ore.

THE YEAR 1931 was for most American copper producers one of restricted output but extremely low production cost.. When compared with 1929, the marked reductions in costs achieved in 1931, operating at rates in many instances a third to a half of capacity, can only be regarded as remarkable. In fact, the recent shut-down of several large operations suggests the probability that 1931 costs represent a bare minimum for many properties. Before discussing the 1931 results a few remarks on cost data are appropriate. The type of cost tabulation here presented was first published in 1929, (A. B. Parsons. E. & M. I. June 8, 1929), and has appeared each, succeeding year following in general the calculation method and company set-up of the original article. (. G. W. Tower, E. & III. L, July 8. 1930; S. D. Strauss, E. & M. J.; July 27, 1931). As far as possible the leading American copper companies are included. In considering these cost tabulations it must be borne in mind that the information from which they have been prepared is entirely contained in the annual report of each company; and that a multiplicity of interests and a condensed income statement for some of the larger companies, such as Cerro de Pasco and Kennecott, make the cost figure an arbitrary one depending upon sundry metal credits, metal products, miscellaneous income, etc. For Granby, Howe Sound. Magma, and Noranda, sundry metal credits are important. Furthermore Andes, Chile and Greene Cananea give costs only against copper sold. Although the individual costs here figured are by no means absolute they are computed by the same method each year and offer a basis of annual comparison; and with attention to footnotes the premises on which the costs are based may be easily followed.

As the working levels in domestic mines are developed to greater depths and work areas move further from the shafts, maintaining a safe and healthful working environment becomes more difficult. Increased temperature and humidity at greater depths becomes first a factor in productivity and then a threat to the miner's safety. Initially, a miner might develop listlessness leading to reduced productivity and reduced alertness. Continued overexertion can lead to heat stroke and possibly death. Mine ventilation engineers, therefore, must not only provide clean air to work areas, but also must provide cooled air. The following article describes the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) and Foster-Miller's successful development of a high performance, low maintenance direct water to air contact heat exchanger for mine cooling. While heat problems frequently do not develop until mining operations descend below sea level, problems will arise any time mining penetrates high temperature rock. Hot fissure water will increase the severity of the situation, causing increases in wet bulb temperature - the temperature to which perspiring miners reject metabolic body heat. All energy expended in mining adds to the heat load which must be absorbed by the ventilation air. Just when the cooling capacity of ventilation air is needed most, adiabatic compression (autocompression) of air descending the shaft raises air temperatures 1.3g°C (2.5'F) to 2.94"C (5.3OF)/305m (1000 ft) depending on humidity. Increased temperatures decrease the ability of the air to absorb heat from the mine, and work area temperatures rise. Once forced ventilation air can no longer maintain safe work area temperatures, refrigeration methods must be employed. Many mines now use cooling coils for this purpose. A cooling coil uses refrigerated mine water to cool the air by passing the air through banks of copper tubing filled with cold water. Heat from the air is transferred to the water through the pipe with the aid of fins. Conventional water to air heat exchangers prove troublesome for many mines be- cause of the high levels of dust that are encountered, causing these exchangers to operate at relatively low efficiencies. A more satisfactory approach to work- place cooling is desired - one that offers reduced maintenance and increased cooling efficiency.

THE Achotla mill of the Cia. Minera de Pe[n]oles is of special interest in that it is one of the few still employing the chloridization process. The ore milled comes from the Suriana mine and consists of both oxide and sulphide, from neither of which can the gold or silver be extracted by a simple cyanide treatment. The mill was built in 1927, after several years of study in the development of the process1, and operated from December of that year until October 1930. Operations were resumed in February 1935, and have been continuous since, treating approximately 5000 tons per month, while the mine is getting up to full tonnage of 6500 tons per month. Transportation Of Supplies The property is in Guerrero, Mexico, some 175 km. by airline southwest of Mexico City. The mill site is at Temisco (Fig. I), 8 km. from the Balsas River and 4.8 km. by aerial tram from the mine. At Temisco are the general office, shops, warehouses and laboratory serving both mine and mill. Here sufficient water is available either from a small creek running through the property or from the Balsas River, also convenient and ample storage space for the tailings. With the exception of the mine timber and a few native building materials which may be obtained locally, all supplies for both mine and mill are brought down the Balsas River from Balsas, the terminal of a Mexican National Railway line out of Mexico City. The method of transportation on the river is interesting. Rapids with very fast water are numerous, prohibiting the use of mechanically propelled boats. Those used resemble large, flat-bottomed rowboats some 22 ft. long by 8 ft. wide (Fig. 2). They are manned by two oarsmen sitting in the bow, each handling one large oar, and usually another man in the stern who, with his oar, assists in steering the boat, especially when the rapids are run.
