PRODUCTION AND MARINE TRANSPORTATION OF MEXICAN PETROLEUMS ALTHOUGH the work on which this paper is based was carried on, by the writer as Special Commissioner of the Petroleum Department of the Mexican Government, the opinions expressed are only his personal views for which the Mexican Government can in no way be held responsible. Notwithstanding that the appointment covers all phases of the so-called petroleum question, as the one question of immediate importance was that relating to taxation, it was decided to devote all the time to this phase of the work. The present report has been divided into two closely related parts, .the first dealing with the production and marine transportation of Mexican petroleum, and the second, with the Mexican taxation on petroleum and its products. The writer wishes, to acknowledge the loyal cooperation rendered by Mr. M. C. Ehlen, who had charge of the statistical, work, and by Miss S. Stern and Messrs. E. P. Heiles and J. E. Morrissey. The aim throughout the work has been; to pave the way for a thorough understanding between the Mexican Government and the oil operators and to present a true and clear statement of facts relating to the questions at issue.

The effect of hydrostatic pressure upon the austenite start temperature of a commercial Fe-28.4 at. pct Ni-0.5 at. pct C alloy has been determined. For pressures to 20 kbar, the austenite start temperature decreased from its atmospheric pressure value of 380°C at the rate of about 4°C per kbar. These data are analyzed by two different thermodynamic approaches; first, considering the transformation as an isothermal process, and second, considering the transformation as an isentropic process. It was found that both these approaches fit the experimental data equally well. The effect of hydrostatic pressure upon the austenite start temperature is best described by considering the mechanical work done during the transformation as that work obtained by multiplying the applied pressure with the gross volume change of the transformation. Similarly, plastic deformation is observed to lower the austenite start temperature, A,. The effect of uniaxial stress on the M, of iron-nickel alloys has been studied by Kulin, Cohen, and Averbach.2 They found that the martensite start temperature was significantly changed by stresses well within the elastic region. Moreover, the effect of tensile and compres-sive stresses differed. These effects were explained in terms of the interaction of the applied stress with both the dilational and shear components of the transformation strain. The magnitudes of the influence of uniaxial tension, compression and hydrostatic pressure on Ms were measured in 30 pct Ni 70 pct Fe by Pate1 and Cohen.3 Their thermodynamic calculations and similar calculations by Fisher and Turnbull4 predicted the experimental results when the transformation was assumed to occur isothermally at some fixed driving force. This driving force was assumed to be supplied by a combination of the chemical free energy difference between the austenitic and martensitic phases and the work performed during transformation by the applied stress. More recently, Russell and winchel15 reported the effect of rapidly applied shear stress on the reversal of martensite to austenite in iron-nickel-carbon alloys. They performed a thermodynamic analysis of this transformation based upon the assumption that the re- versal occurred adiabatically. They concluded that the applied shear stress did not significantly interact with the transformation strain and thus did not assist in inducing the reversal. Rather they concluded that the reversal was effected by localized strain heating which resulted from the gross local shear deformation of the experiment. In either the adiabatic or isothermal analysis it is necessary to compute the work performed by the interaction of the applied stress and the transformation strains. In the case of hydrostatic pressure this interaction has been treated by two different methods. In either case the applied pressure is assumed to remain constant during the transformation. In one treatment the applied pressure is assumed to interact directly with the dilatational strain associated with the formation of an individual martensite plate.3'4 This local strain has been measured at atmospheric pressure in iron-nickel alloys by Machlin and Cohen.6 In the above treatment this local strain is assumed invariant with temperature and pressure changes. In the other treatment the applied pressure is assumed to interact with the gross volume change of the transformation.7,8 The usefulness of this latter treatment has been demonstrated by Kaufman, Leyenaar, and Harvey7 who calculated the effects of pressure upon the martensite and austenite start temperatures of Fe-10 at. pct Ni and Fe-25 at. pct Ni alloys. Excellent agreement was obtained between their calculations and their experimental data on an Fe-9.5 at. pct Ni alloy. However, this treatment suffers from the fact that the data required to calculate the volume change of the transformation (i.e., the initial specific volumes, the thermal expansion and compressibility data for both the austenitic and martensitic phases) is, in general, not available for any material except pure iron. Thus the calculations of Kaufman et al.7 were necessarily performed by assuming that the volume change of the martensitic transformation in the iron-nickel alloys was that same volume change occurring during the a-? transformation in pure iron. While this approximation may suffice for very dilute alloys it is likely to be inaccurate in high nickel alloys. We have performed measurements of the effect of hydrostatic pressure to 20 kbar on the A, temperature of an Fe-28.4 at. pct Ni-0.5 at. pct C alloy. The composition is similar to the alloy used by Pate1 and Cohen3 to determine the effect of pressure upon the M, temperature. The present measurements permit calculation of the interaction between the applied pressure and the transformation strain. Additionally, measurements have been made which allow precise determination of the gross volume change of the transformation. The data allow direct comparison between the alternate hypotheses of the interaction between the applied pressure and a dilatational transformation strain characterized by either the formation

Discussion of the paper of James Douglas, presented at the New Haven meeting, February, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 29, May, 1909, pp. 439 to 451. JAMES DOUGLAS, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*) :-In my paper on the Conservation of Natural Resources, I referred to the slow replacement of bee-hive ovens by the by-product ovens as a most notable instance of waste. And I quoted from Mr. Parker's report for .1906 an explanation given by him in accounting for the small production of by-product coke. It was that the markets for the by-products of the coke-ovens was so limited that some of the ovens constructed were out of operation. His report on the manufacture of coke in 1908 1 does not record an improvement, and attributes the strange fact that we alone, of all the industrial peoples, delay the adoption of this cardinal improvement from the continuance of the same almost inexplicable cause. To quote again from his report, lie says (p. 241): "The year 1908 was not marked by any notable gain in the construction of by-product coking plants, though some new work was done. There was a net increase of 115 in the number of completed ovens in 1908 over 1907, the totals for the two years being, respectively, 3,892 and 4,007. The additional equipment consisted of 140 Koppers regenerative ovens built at Joliet, I11., by the United States Steel Corporation, but this increase was partly offset by the dismantling of Y5 Semet Solvay ovens at Sharon, Pa., the net gain being 115 ovens. Included in the total of 4,007 completed ovens in 1908 are 152 Newton-Chambers ovens at Vintondale, Pa., but as no recovery of by-products was made at this plant in 190S, the production of coke is included with that from beehive ovens. The 56 ovens of the same type at Pocahontas, Va., have not been in practical operation since they were first. installed. In addition to these there was one other by-product plant of 120 ovens. Oat. was not operated during the year. The number of retort ovens producing coke in 1908 was 3,679, as compared with 3,811 active ovens in 1907." Accoriding to the classical theory of elasticity, the elastic portion of the stress-strain curve is represented by a straight line. such a representation implies that there is a linear relationship between strain and stress and also that strain is a single-valued function of stress and vice versa. Actually, such a one-to-one correspondence between strain and stress does not exist in real metals. A well-known example is the elastic after-effect on unloading. Another familiar example is damping or internal friction, that is, the dissipation of energy attending vibration. In an extensive review of such phenomena, zener1,2 has proposed the term "anelasticity" to denote that property of a solid in virtue of which strain is not a unique function of stress in the non-plastic region. The phenomena arising from anelasticity are called anelastic effects. The measurements on anelastic effects are important in many fields of metals technology. The, in precise instruments such as watch springs, difficulties often arise from the slight dimensional changes after fabrication. The internal friction or damping capacity of metals is often an important factor in deciding whether they are appropriate for instruments in which there are accompanying vibrations.3 However, for metal scientists, the study of anelastic effects furnishes a powerful tool for understanding many properties Of meta1s in terms of their microstructures or atomic interactions. In order to utilize the anelastic measurements to their fullest extent for acquiring such information, the experimental studies Of anelasticity must be interpreted by appropriate mathematical analysis. For a great many problems, however, the necessary information often Can be Obtained by general qualitative arguments. From the definition of anelasticity, any physical changes occurring in a specimen as a result Of the applied stress will cause anelastic effects if such physical changes are accompanied by a delayed change of elastic strain. Under these circumstances, we have the condition that strain lags behind the stress. We may mention the stress-induced transportation phenomena as examples. These include the stress-induced thermal diffusion,4-7 the stress-induced diffusion of particles,8-l2 and the stress-induced viscous slip along the microelements in metals.12-15 The differential equations describing the microscopic mechanism in these phenomena lead to relations in which stress is linear with respect to strain (and/or their derivatives). Thus if we Can demonstrate that the superposition principle is valid under the circumstances in which the anelastic effects are observed, we would expect in the macroscopic relation a linear relationship between stress and strain and their derivatives. This report is to describe a number of anelastic effects observed in alpha-iron, and an attempt is made to derive valuable information from a critical study of these

MINING geology was granted two sessions, Wednesday morning and afternoon, Feb. 17. The morning session, at which H. Foster Bain presided. first considered Paul M. Tyler's paper, "Economic Notes on Steel-making Alloys." The elements used in these important alloys are chromium, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, phosphorus, silicon, titanium, tungsten and vanadium. Edward Sarnpson and C. K. Leith asked whether chromite concentrates could be used, Mr. Tyler replying that they could if not too high in iron. G. W. Pawel said that they were used at Niagara Falls, nlixecl with coarse ore. In reply to a question asked by A. O. Hayes, Mr. Tyler said that molybdenum had not affected the price of tungsten. After this discussion, E. S. Moore's paper on nickel was considered. H. Foster Bain thought that nickel is well controlled and in good hands, technically and politically. The popular stainless steel in America is the 18:8 Cr-Ni metal. In Germany a Cr-Mn steel has possibilities. It is easy to make, cheaper. has better workability, will stand 85 per cent reduction between heats.

Efficient visible light emission from p-n junctions in semiconductors is currently achieved in the four materials, Sic, GaP, ]Ga1-xAs and GaAs1-x,. Recent advances in materials preparation and p-n junction formation are briefly reviewed. The radiative recombination processes in the different materials depend largely on the band structure and the impurity states of each material. The spectral distribution of the emission ranges from the blue in Sic, to green in Gap, yellow in Sic and red in Gap, Ga1-x AlxAs and GaAs1-x Px. The origin of the various processes are discussed. The conversion of the electrical power into optical power and the measurement of the conversion efficiency are reviewed. The currently maximum quantum efficiencies at 300°K are: 3 pct in GaP(red), 1 pct in SiC(yellow), 0.1 pct in GaP(green), 0.2 pct in Ga1-x AlxAs at 66001, and 0.1 pct in GaAs1-x Px at 6800. The brightness and the interplay of the quantum efficiency and the luminous efficiency are given detailed consideration. VISIBLE light generated by the application of a direct current to a semiconductor crystal was first observed by Lossev1 in 1923. Light emission came from naturally occurring junctions in Sic crystals but little was known then with regard to the mechanism of charge transport and light emission. Some nearly 30 years later and with a vastly increased understanding of semiconductors the phenomenon of electroluminescence was studied in more detail, for example in p-n junctions of germanium.2 In these early studies, the efficiency of converting the electron current into a photon current was very low and therefore aroused little interest toward practical application. More recently it became apparent that in certain materials, for instance GaAs, and under certain conditions, the conversion efficiency was not low at all.3 The subsequent discovery of the p-n junction laser4-6 provided the impetus for increased studies of electroluminescence. Light emitted from GaAs occurs in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum and is not visible to the eye. At nearly the same time the use of GaAs1-xPx led to laser action at low temperatures which was visible to the eye.7 Later a red light emitting diode, made from Gap, was reportedS which emitted incoherent radiation at 300°K with an external quantum efficiency of about 1.5 pct. The fact that such efficient devices were obtainable led to a more concentrated effort in the search for highly efficient room-temperature semiconductor light sources. It is some of this later work on p-n junction luminescence with which we will be concerned here. Since our aim is centered on visible light, with hv =1.8 ev ( ?=7000?), only the wider band gap semiconductors are of interest, i.e., Eg 1 1.8 ev. Although many compounds meet this criterion, only a limited number of those are also good semiconductors, i.e. contain low resistance n and p regions. Some of the more promising candidates are listed in Table I. We will only be concerned with light generation from a p-n junction. This limitation excludes essentially the group II-VI binary compounds, although we will briefly review the case of ZnTe and the solid solution ZnTe1-xSex. As we will show they may contain a p-n junction but only of a special kind. Most of the discussion will deal with the four materials, Sic, Gap, Gal-xAlxAs, and GaAs1-xPx. These appear to be at the present time the best visible light emitting semiconductors. In the following sections we will briefly consider: 1) the electrical properties of p-n junctions; 2) some recent advances in materials preparation; 3) the formation of p-n junctions; and then in somewhat greater detail we will consider: 4) the various radiative recombination processes; 5) the measurement and observation of the external quantum efficiency; 6) the luminous efficiency; 7) the brightness of light emitting diodes (LED'S). THE P-N JUNCTION The p-n junction in a semiconductor crystal is the interface between two differently doped regions. More specifically the p region is doped predominantly with acceptor impurities and the n region contains predominantly donor impurities. The energy band structure of a degenerate p-n junction at thermal equilibrium is shown in Fig. l(a). The excess electrons on the n side of the junction are confined to this region by the barrier potential Eg. Similarly the excess holes on the p-side of the junction are confined to the p-region by a similar potential barrier. If we now apply a dc voltage V such that the p region is made positive and the n region negative, the barrier potential EB is reduced by the applied voltage, V and the junction is said to be forward biased. With the barrier potential lowered, electrons and holes can drift toward the p region and n region, respectively, see Fig. l(b). The current voltage characteristics of p-n junctions in most wide band gap materials can be described by the relation: J = Joexp(eV/BkT) [1] where the functional form of Jo is determined by the recombination mechanism. Jo is generally a complicated parameter which depends on a number of different factors including temperature, junction width, bias voltage, and carrier lifetimes. IN a previous article' the authors outlined a study of the variables in rod milling and also reported data from a series of open circuit grinding tests on a massive limestone in a 30-in. x 4-ft end peripheral discharge rod mill. As a second part of the experimental program, an analysis is now presented for the 30-in. x 4-ft overflow rod mill grinding under identical conditions, except that discharge ports on the periphery of the mill shell have been sealed so that the products from the present series overflowed through a 9-in. diam .opening in the center of the end plate. A variance analysis has been made of the combined data for the two experiments, and performances of the two mills are compared here. Included in the first report' were descriptions of feed preparation, rod mill circuit, instrumentation and controls, and techniques used to evaluate data. Dependent and independent variables were defined, and variance analyses were made to test the relative significance of variables and to establish magnitude of error for the experiment. Significant data were plotted in various combinations, and conclusions were drawn from the graphs. The procedure and analysis in this series of tests follows the first tests and is not repeated. Data from the second series are recorded in Table I. Listed in the first three columns are the independent variables of feed rate (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 1b per hr), mill speed (50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 pct of critical), and pulp density (50, 60, 70, and 80 pct). The dependent variables, Pso, P100, reduction ratio, slope of the log-log sieve analysis curve, power demand, and Bond work index follow. Of these, only the reduction ratio and the Bond work index were analyzed for significance. Production of new surface as calculated from sieve analyses has not been included for this series because of the questionable assumptions that have to be made to satisfy the formulas involved. The large number of products obtained during the runs precluded the use of surface measurement techniques by the gas adsorption methods at this time; however, samples of all products have been stored for future reference. To test the consistency of the reporting of the sieved products, an averaged sieve analysis was calculated from the wet-dry plots obtained from the three product samples of each run. The resulting averaged analysis was plotted and the P80, selected. The relative deviations of the P80's from each of the three product samples with respect to the P80 of the averaged analysis were then calculated. In only two sets were the relative deviations (6.2 and 9.9 pct) considered excessive. In each of these two sets, one sieve analysis was obviously out of line; hence that analysis was ignored and new averages were computed. This reduced the relative deviations to 1.2 and 2.7 pct respectively. The relative deviations of the product analyses with respect to their averages ranged from 0.1 to 1.4 pct at 1000 lb per hr, 0.0 to 1.1 pct at 2000 lb per hr, 0.2 to 3.0 pct at 3000 lb per hr, 0.3 to 4.3 pct at 4000 lb per hr, and 0.5 to 5.2 pct at 5000 lb per hr. The relative deviation of the 80 pct passing point for 96 dry sieve analyses of the feed with respect to that of the averaged analysis was 7.6 pct. This slightly higher percentage can probably be attributed to a greater proportion of tramp oversize in a crusher product than is ordinarily found in a rod mill product. The last column on Table I lists the adjusted work index, which has been used as the measure of efficiency for the various combinations of operating conditions investigated. Efficiency increases as the index becomes lower. It was reported in the previous paper that the work indexes for the Waukesha limestone used in these experiments decreased as the product size decreased (as calculated from Bond grindabilities). That is, this limestone becomes easier to grind as the material becomes finer. This is unusual, because the work index for most materials as calculated from the Bond grindability has remained constant as the product size decreased or has increased slightly. Table II lists the results of Bond grindability tests at all mesh sizes from 3 to 200 and the work indexes calculated from them. To remove this variation of work index with product size from the data so that results would apply to any material of constant work index, the work index values shown in Table II were plotted against product size on log-log paper. From this curve (a straight line function in this case), the expected work index for the product size for each of the runs of the experiment was obtained. The work indexes as calculated from the reduction ratio and energy consumption were then divided by the corresponding expected work index. The results obtained are reported in percentages on Table I as adjusted work index and are actually percentages of the work index for the Waukesha limestone at the size in question. Multiplication of the work index value for a material of constant index by these percentages should allow the application of the adjusted work index curves to the material. Only the adjusted work index values, not the actual experimental values, were used for the variance analyses and for the graphs.

Using an expression for the free energy of a homogeneous phase as a function of composition, a relationship is derived which interrelates the phase boundaries extending from the allotropic transformation of the solvent metal. Comparisons between observed and calculated phase boundaries in the systems Fe-Ni, Fe-Mn, Fe-W, Ti-Mo, and Ti-Cb are presented. IT is the purpose of this paper to illustrate how the general free energy equations for two phases in equilibrium may be used to derive an expression which interrelates the phase boundaries extending from the allotropic transformation of the solvent metal. The free energy per gram atom of a disordered solid solution may, for many purposes, be represented by the equation:' F = ½NZ [C-V,, + (1-C) VbB + 2C (l-C)V] + K(T) +RT[C-lnC+ (l-C)ln(l-C) ] [1] where N is Avogadro's number; Z, the coordination number; C, the concentration of the solute element in atomic percent; the subscripts refer to concentrations at phase mixture boundaries; VAA, VBB, and V,, are the bond energies between like and unlike adjacent atoms, respectively, at the interatomic spacing characteristic of the phase. The bond energies are usually assumed to be independent of small changes in the lattice parameter occasioned by solute additions and variations in temperature; V = VAB ---------------—— ; K(T) is the sum of the heat con- tent and heat entropy; R, the molar gas constant; and T, the temperature in degrees Kelvin. The free energy of a homogeneous phase is there- fore the sum of an internal energy, a specific heat, and a configurational entropy term, respectively. The compositions of two phases in equilibrium at a given temperature are governed by the minimum total free energy principle. Graphically, this is represented by the points of tangency of the tangent common to the free energy vs. concentration curves of the two phases. It may be noted that Zener2 has used assumption 1 in the calculation of the boundaries limiting the (a+j3) phase mixture in the Cu-Zn system.

The purpose of this paper is to present data on the fundamental design of the mud; the ingredients used and their specifications; the effect of ingredient concentration on physical properties; the selection of the proper mud; the facilities needed for handling the mud; and a general discussion on drilling with oil-base mud. In view of the early stage of development of oil-base mud, the great number of vari- ables, and the almost unlimited possible combinations of these. variables, which in turn require extensive laboratory study, there are certain irregularities and omis. sions in the data presented here. However, it is believed that sufficient data are at hand to permit a fairly complete analysis of the characteristics of oil-base muds. In view of the excellent plastering properties of oil-base mud when properly proportioned, its use should: (I) minimize the possibility of impairing the natural flow potentialities of the producing horizon such as that resulting from infiltration of water from water-base muds; (2) permit smaller clearances for setting liners, since the mud sheath has no appreciable thickness; (3) eliminate the possibility of clogging the perforations of the liner with thick mud sheath; (4) facilitate the removal of the mud sheath from the walls of the hole, for its mud sheath has no appreciable strength; (5) assist in drilling through formations, such as "heaving shale," where water wetting appears to be a source of difficulty. For mining geologists, the most important trends during 1962 have been the increased concentration of the exploratory activities of American mining companies in the United States and Canada and the greater use of the combined techniques of geology, geophysics and geochemistry in searches over larger areas for wider varieties of metals and minerals. The principal reasons for these changes in approach have been the deterioration of the political-economic climate in many areas of the globe of equal or greater geologic promise and the realization that modern exploration is most efficiently and economically conducted through the use of all available means of detecting ores in areas sufficiently large to raise to a maximum the chances of success. The attitude of certain major U.S. metal-producing companies can be shown by the officially ex- pressed positions of their principal officers. Early in 1962, Clyde E. Weed, Chairman of the Board of Anaconda, remarked that "because of unsettled conditions and disruptive influences in many of the copper-producing areas of the world, it is imperative that domestic copper-producing capacity be improved and made as efficient as possible in order to meet consumer demands at reasonably stable prices." In November, Robert G. Page, President of Phelps Dodge, pointed out that his company is not only concentrating most of its exploratory effort on this continent but is also increasing the number of metals for which it is searching. Frank R. Milliken, President of Kennecott, recently said that "most of our exploration money is going into the northern part of the Western Hemisphere."

Rate equations were derived to describe the kinetics of internal oxidation of cylinders and spheres. The derived equations for cylinders were checked experimentally by means of sub scale thickness and electrical conductivity measurements on Cu-Cr alloy wires. The properties of the internally oxidized samples were examined with conductivity applications in mind. It was possible to produce uniform dispersions of Cr2O3 in copper with an initial chromium content as high as 3 wt pct. While electrical conductivities only a few pct less than that of OFHC copper were obtained, the Cr2Os particle size and spacing were too large for effective dispersion hardening. T.HE process of internal oxidation has been used widely in basic studies of the permeability of gases in metals. In a review article, Rapp1 has discussed the principles of internal oxidation in considerable detail. From a technological standpoint, internal oxidation is often considered undesirable, since it is a means by which inclusions can be introduced into an otherwise clean material. Another important aspect of internal oxidation is its use as a means of dispersion hardening a material. Broutman and Krock2 discuss this and other methods for making dispersion hardened alloys. The only internally oxidized material known to the authors which is commercially available is a Cu-BeO alloy.3'4 This alloy is made from Cu-Be alloy powder, using a so-called Rhines pack. It has a tensile strength of 80,000 psi and retains its strength at relatively high temperatures. The objectives of the present study were to derive rate equations for the internal oxidation of cylinders and spheres, to check the derived equations for cylinders experimentally, and to examine the structure and properties of internally oxidized Cu-Cr alloys. The Cu-Cr system was chosen for this study because uniform dispersions are obtainable at high alloy contents, which is a desirable characteristic in dispersion hardened materials. RATE EQUATIONS FOR VARIOUS GEOMETRIES A number of authors5--9 have derived equations to describe internal oxidation kinetics. These derivations differ somewhat in mathematical assumptions and approximations, and all except one of the derivations deal exclusively with the internal oxidation of plates. The exception is a brief treatment of cylindrical and spherical geometries given by Meijering and Druy-vesteyn9 as a part of a comprehensive paper on the general subject of internal oxidation. These authors did not obtain rate data to check their derivations, although they did show that the hardness profile across an internally oxidized sample is directly related to the rate of interface movement. For cylindrical and spherical geometries, a quasi-steady-state approximation is needed to circumvent mathematical complications in obtaining a solution to the basic differential equations. In using this approximation, we consider the concentration gradient of dissolved oxygen in the internally oxidized zone or sub-scale to be the same as the gradient which would be present if there were no movement of the subscale interface. The steady-state approximation introduces an error of about 1 pct in computing the rate of internal oxidation of an Fe-1.0 pct Mn alloy plate, if the present method is compared to the more exact method of Wagner.7'10 The details of the derivations of the rate equations for cylinders and spheres are given in the Appendix, and only the results of these derivations are given below. The final equations obtained by Meijering and Druyvesteyn9 can be shown to be equivalent to our Eqs. [1] and [2], although the two approaches are somewhat different. Cylindrical Geometry. R. L. Bullock (St. Joseph Lead Co., Bonne Terre, Mo.)— The progressive approach of The International Salt Co. as described by Mr. Ryon is certainly commendable as is his paper. St. Joseph Lead Co. has been shooting AN/FO in 13/8 to 1 1/4-in. holes for several months now (as of October 1960) on a trial basis. The results thus far obtained are excellent, but conclusive evidence at this date is premature. One point that he gave should interest even the most ardent skeptic. That is, they are getting a detonation of the 1 1/4-in. ANDO charges in 2 1/4-in. holes. In light of its low sensitivity and critical diameter, this would appear to be one of the worse conditions that one could expect in which to get proper detonation of AN/FO. It has been shown* that partial confinement sometimes decreases sensitivity of a column of explosive because the air space above the explosive becomes highly compressed and in turn compresses the explosive prior to passage of the detonation front. Apparently, this does not happen in their shooting and the poor explosive coupling caused by the 2 1/4-in. holes yields a minimum of overbreak and is an ideal condition for their back.

INTRODUCTION EARLY in 1946, at the instigation of the U. S. Army Signal Corps, the authors made an extensive survey of the available literature covering high-strength, high-conductivity alloys. For the purposes of the Signal Corps, the minimum tensile strength to be considered was 150,000 psi, together with at least 50 pct IACS conductivity. No single alloy was found to be in production, or mentioned in the literature, which had this combination of properties. The constitution diagram for the iron-copper alloys is not well established in the respect to the two-liquid region. Fig I, taken from the 1939 Ed. of the ASM Metals Handbook, shows a two-liquid system existing above the liquidus temperature, but disconnected from it. Although Ruer and Fick1 and Ruer and Goerens2 definitely established the fact that two liquid layers could occur in the system, Ruer3 was not convinced that the line off immiscibility was closed in the center. Maddocks and Claussen4 found no liquid immiscibility at temperatures up to 1570°C in alloys containing almost no carbon. Although the diagram would indicate age hardening of the copper-iron alloys is possible, Hanson and Fords found that little hardening effect could be obtained. However, Gordon and Cohen6 reported that the response is better if the quenching is very efficient. Although iron has a potent effect on the conductivity of copper, Hanson and Ford5 have shown that, when hot-rolled copper iron alloys are aged at 1200°F, the electrical conductivity decreases sharply with iron contents up to 0.2 pct Fe, and then levels off at conductivities between 60 to 70 pct IACS with compositions to 2.1 pct Fe. They also found that aging did not increase the tensile strength, although increasing iron content gave a moderate improvement in strength. High-strength copper-iron alloys, usually containing about 60 pct iron, had been reported by Smith and Palmer.7 They found that an alloy containing 56.4 pct copper, 0.21 pct magnesium, balance iron, would give a maximum tensile strength of 170,000 psi and an electrical conductivity of slightly over 35 pct IACS. The alloy could also be processed to have 150,000 psi tensile strength, and about 41 pct IACS conductivity. Decreasing the iron content increased the electrical conductivity, but the long mushy range during freezing of the alloy containing 10 to 20 pct iron made the production of good castings difficult, In spite of the difficulty encountered by Smith and Palmer with alloys of around 20 pct iron, it was decided to make a rather complete investigation 0f this type of alloy. As a result 0f this investigation, a method of alloying and fabricating copper alloys containing 10 to 15 pct iron was developed

The total pipe-line runs of petroleum in Indiana during 1945 were 4,114,000 bbl., a decline of nearly 17 per cent below the estimated 4,950,000 bbl. produced in 1944. Drilling activity during the year was centered in Posey and Gibson Counties, where seven new pools were discovered in the state. Four of the pools are in Posey County-Crunk, Farmersville, Jeffries and St. Wendells East-and the other three are in Gibson County-Johnson West, Lysle and Mt. Carmel East.

I would like to commend the author on his description of Pinto Valley's plant, and its interesting innovations. The author's discussion of 18 ft in diameter by 21 ft long primary ball mills (the largest wet ball mills made to date) is of considerable importance to those who have been engaged in the field of studying ball mill liner wear as it relates to various grinding installations. While it is stated that the mills have operated on a fixed tonnage and therefore it has been difficult to determine the best liner pattern, calculations from the data in the paper indicates that for mills 1, 2, 5, and 6, the tonnage per hour varies from a low of 223 for mill No. 1, up to a high of 314, for mill No. 2, while mills 5 and 6 calculate 285 and 246, respectively. Analysis of the wear patterns for the single wave liners used in mill No. 1 as compared to the double wave liners in mill No. 2, suggests that the author's data may tell more than he suspects about liner wear to be expected and thus what should be a best pattern selection from what may appear to be only limited hours of operation. [Fig. A] is a reproduction of author's [Fig. 10], to which wear forecast patterns [F-1 and F-2] have been added. Forecasts are based on many previous studies of large diameter ball mill operations over many years of field service. Calculations from the first-wear pattern provide an initial wear rate of only 13 lb of liner per 100 sq ft of shell liner surface per day, or 0.031 lb per to: ground. Empirical data from 91 rock excavations have been used to construct a family of slope curves on a chart relating excavation height and inclination. The highest and steepest slopes from each excavation are plotted and connected by a line. The 31 1ines appear to establish one or two geometrical slope fields through which the curves are projected. The curves apparently represent a lumped eflect of many factors too complex to be considered individually. Important factors such as geological structure or ground-water conditions can dominate the picture, but where these factors do not overshadow others, the slope chart should be useful for estimating or checking optimum inclination. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USAE) has been engaged since 1962 with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in a joint research program to develop nuclear excavation technology. The Corps is responsible for collecting the requisite data on engineering and construction problems associated with nuclear excavation. The ultimate objective is to develop a capability to use nuclear explosives as a construction tool on public works projects such as harbors and canals. The present study on empirical inclination-height curves for conventionally excavated slopes is an outgrowth of an investigation' sponsored by the USAE Nuclear Cratering Group on applicability of data from existing excavations in establishing guides for engineering judgment in crater excavation. Data were generously contributed by over 50 mining companies among other organizations. Inasmuch as several companies preferred that their contribution be anonymous, all data are treated so here. Some Factors Affecting Stability Many factors affect or are suspected of affecting the stability of excavated slopes, e.g., adverse structural orientation, degree of structural ordering, ground water, climatic conditions, mechanics of excavation, and plan-profile configuration. Such factors are lumped together in developing a slope chart. Obviously geological structure and ground water can overshadow all other factors. Where such is the case, the simplification of slope charts may give an erroneous picture (not conservative enough). A further complication results from the fact that the concept of stability may vary according to the use of the excavations. For example, slope adjustments that would be regarded as failure in a powerhouse excavation, might be tolerable in a mining operation. Mine slopes are continually being modified by further excavation, and instability that would develop in a similar permanent excavation slope over a period of years might not have time to develop in a mine. Inclination vs. Height Charts Charts of inclination vs. height for particular formations or conditions have been used in the past as an aid for designing excavation slopes. Some of these have been based upon empirical analyses of collections of data and experience. MacDonald" and Lane have presented slope tables and charts for excavated and natural slopes in relatively weak sandstone and shale. Coates' has shown an inclination-height chart for slopes in incompetent rock. Most organizations have developed slope design criteria which relate bench widths, heights, and inclinations to use in various rocks. Slope data collected in present studies can be similarly used to develop inclination-height charts; however, a plot of all slopes on such a chart shows very little because of the wide spread of the data. Reasons for the dispersion of points are: (1) many slopes are not carried at optimum inclination, particularly in mines where maintaining roadways and following irregularities of ore bodies are more important than achieving steep inclinations; (2) many engineers and geologists with varied backgrounds and viewpoints have been involved in designing these slopes; and (3) each slope is characterized by a unique combination of factors affecting stability and in turn optimum inclination. Significant curves can sometimes be constructed where the points can be grouped into related clusters from the same excavation. The essence of this approach appears when only two slopes from each excavation are considered—the highest slope and the steepest slope, connected by a line segment (Fig. 1). This reduces considerably the usable data because in many cases only one of these two slopes is available. Nevertheless, the concession seems justified. Construction of Slope Curves Ninety-one pairs of points and connecting line segments were assembled in this study. The line segments were assumed to approximate a geometrical slope field (Fig. 2), and a family of curves has been visually projected through to represent the slope field. It should be
