The value of carbon ratios in determining the boundaries of possible oil deposits appears to have passed the hypothetical stage. The theory that the ratio of fixed carbon in pure coals is an invariable index of incipient metamorphism in both surface and underground rocks and that it may be applied in defining the limits of petroleum, advanced by David White,' has been received with keen interest by many petroleum geologists. Detailed isocarb maps have been prepared of the Pennsylvanian area of North Texas and Eastern Oklahoma by M. L. Fuller.² A similar map of the coal-bearing area of West Virginia is given here. An isocarb3 is a line showing an equal fixed-carbon percentage, pure coal basis; the term has been proposed by David White to supersede a less expressive nomenclature. The term carbon ratio is applied to the pereentage of carbon in pure coal after water and ash have been eliminated. As a comparatively small number of analyses have been made on this basis, it is usually necessary to compute the ratio by dividing the fixed carbon of the proximate analysis by the sum of the fixed carbon and volatile matter of the same analysis. Many thousands of proximate analyses have been made by the West Virginia Geological Survey, covering nearly every county in which coal is found. Numerous others have been made by the U. S. Geological Survey and the U. S. Bureau of Mines, but as uniformity of results is best secured by adhering to one set of analyses, the tests of the West Virginia Survey have been cxclusively used.

The volume-diffusion coefficients of Nb-95 and Ta-182 in niobium have been measured over the temperature range 878° to 2400°C. High-temperature specimens (T 21500°C) were sectioned by conventional lathe and grinding techniques while low-temperature specimens were sectioned by an anodizing and stripping technique previously described. Over a range of more than ten orders of magnitude in diffusivity, the self-diffusion data is well-represented by the equation: D = (1.1+ 0.2) exp [- (96,000 * 900)/RT ] cm2/sec Upward deviations from this line are explained by short-circuit diffusion in combination with the loss of resolution of the sectioning techniques. Oxygen contamination within the range 100 to 450 ppm was found to have little or no effect on the self-diffusivitj 01 niobium. In a limited number of measurements, the diffusivity of Ta-182 in niobium was found to be about half that of Nb-95 in niobium. These data may be described by D = (I.0+0.90.5)exp [- (99,300 * 2400) /RT ] PREVIOUSLY reported studies of self-diffusion in niobium were by Resnick and Castleman1 and Peart, Graham, and Tomlin.2 The data of Resnick and Castleman over a temperature range 1585" to 2120°C show considerable scatter but. can be represented by D = (12.4 *0.8) exp [-(105,000+3OOO)/RT] cm2/sec The limited data of Peart, Graham, and Tomlin follow the equation D = 1.3 exp (-95,00O/RT) cm2/sec In view of recent diffusion data for ß zirconium3 and 0 titanium4 in which Arrhenius-type plots do not yield straight lines and of the potential high- temperature uses of niobium and its alloys, we thought it important to investigate the diffusion behavior of this bcc refractory metal over a large temperature range. This has recently been done for molybdenum,5 chromium,6 vanadium,"" and tantalum.9 Niobium was a particularly suitable material for this study largely because of the development of an anodizing and stripping sectioning technique which enables diffusivities as small as l0-19' sq cm per sec to be determined accurately.10 In addition to self-diffusion data, data were obtained for the diffusion of Ta-182 in niobium and for the effect of varying oxygen content on self-diffusion. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The niobium was obtained from three sources: 1) melting stock from Shieldalloy Corp., 2) electron-beam melted single crystals, 1/2 in. diameter, from Semi-Elements, Inc., and 3) oxygen-doped, electron-beam melted single crystals from Materials Research Corp. The melting stock was electron-beam melted and specimens 5/8 in. diameter by 1/2 in. long were machined from the center of the bar. The analysis supplied by the vendor and an interstitial analysis of one of the specimens are given in Table I. The single crystals (type 2 above) were cut with a jeweler's saw to specimens about 3/8 in. long. The interstitial analysis of this material is given in Table 11. This material was used

Discussion of the paper of GRAFTON M. THRASHER, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 106, October, 1915, pp. 2129 to 2138. RICHARD MOLDENKE, Watchung, N. J.-Mr. Thrasher is to be commended for developing a very interesting comparison between high- and low-carbon and silicon malleable cast irons for an equal degree of chill. His deductions are unquestionably correct, though the application to daily practice is open to serious criticism, from the standpoint of the man who receives the castings, as will be shown later on. Running over some of the points which affect the tests in question: Mr. Thrasher admits that the temperature of pouring has a serious influence on the degree of chill shown in the test plugs he made. This is a well-known fact, and I would like to add that another serious trouble comes from oxidized iron when the heats have been unduly prolonged. Such metal always shows more chilling action for a given silicon and carbon content than normally melted iron. Indeed, the test piece quoted giving the extreme of the chill line (1.07 per cent. Si and 2.47 per cent. total carbon) was such a poor heat, a ferro-silicon addition never "doctoring" up the metal sufficiently to show normal good strength. In spite of these irregularities, which would simply change the curve slightly, I take it that Mr. Thrasher's results can be accepted as reliable enough to establish the relationship of silicon and total carbon as shown. When, however, the claim is made that silicon and carbon can be substituted for each other in mixture-making (a claim which may be perfectly correct metallurgically), a very important factor is forgotten, causing the purchaser of the castings much annoyance. This is the contraction (erroneously called shrinkage) of the castings. They will no longer be true to pattern. The lower the total carbon is allowed to drop, the greater the contraction, and increasing the silicon correspondingly will not correct this trouble. No wonder that recently, in revising the Standard Specifications for Malleable Castings it was necessary to increase the variation of castings from requirements considerably over what was formerly found sufficient. The habit of running up the proportion of silicon and escaping danger from grayness of the metal by copious steel additions was evidently too tempting to manufacturers, as their molding losses were thus kept down and a very soft malleable iron resulted. The customer, however, got serious variations in his work, which was not the case when the total carbon was kept between 3.25 and 2.75, and the silicon held as low as possible without undue cracking of the hard castings.

The Helen Mine, of the Algoma Steel Corporation, in the Michipicoten district, Ontario, Canada, has produced more than 6,240,290 tons of iron ore. Prior to and during World War I, 2,823,369 gross tons of brown ore were shipped, and from 1939 to the end of the 1944 season, 3,416,921 gross tons of siderite ore were produced from open-pit operations. Brief descriptions are given of the nature of the ore, the mining methods employed and the manner of treatment of the ore. Shipment of the finished product, known as Algoma sinter, is made to blast furnaces in both Canada and the United States. The iron-ore bodies—i.e., the oxide ores of the Old Helen and the siderite of the New Helen—are a part of a tabular shaped area of iron formation that extends over a length of more than 100,000 ft. and has a maximum width of 1000 ft. The ores are considered to be a product of introduction of iron-bearing material accompanied by replacement of the rocks already present. It is shown that introduction took place subsequent to the development of the major folded structures. It is believed the iron-bearing material emanated from an igneous source. Introduction The Michipicoten mining district derives its name from the Indian word1 meaning "place of bold promontories" or "region of big places," and anyone who has visited this part of Canada will agree that the district is well named. In 1897, there was active prospecting for gold in the district and the Ontario Bureau of Mines2 opened a recording office at the Hudson's Bay post at Michipicoten River. In the summer of 1897, Ben Boyer, probably searching for gold, discovered an outcrop of brown iron ore at the east end of a small lake, less than 8 miles, in an air line, northeast of the nearest point on Michipicoten Harbour. In the following year, extensive surface exploration and diamond drilling disclosed a commercial body of nonbessemer brown ore, possibly 700 ft. long and 200 ft. wide, of about the following analysis:3 Fe (natural), 57.15 per cent; S, dried at 212°F.. 0.113; SiO2, dried at 212°F., 4.00; P, dried at 212°F., 0.125. The property (Figs. 1-3) was taken over by E. V. Clergue and ultimately was transferred to the Algoma Steel Corporation. The Algoma Central Railway shortly afterward built its line from Michipicoten Harbour to the mine, together with an ore dock at the Harbour. Thus, within three years of its discovery, the mine had adequate shipping facilities and a market for its ore. ONE of the principal activities of the Bureau of Mines connected with the recent war was to help to increase the supply of strategic and critical minerals. Fluorite was one of the most critical of the nonmetallic minerals because of the increased demand for it as a flux in basic open-hearth and electric steel furnaces and as a raw material for the production of artificial cryolite used in the aluminum industry. Wartime developments in the technology of hydrofluoric acid, such as the use of the anhydrous acid as a catalyst in production of high-octane gasoline and the use of organic fluorides as carriers for insecticides, also increased the demand for acid-grade fluorite.[t] In 1943 the consumption of acid-grade fluorite was advancing at a more rapid rate than production, and was only slightly less than production during the latter half of the year.1 The outlook for the postwar market for fluorite is encouraging. Steel production is expected to remain high until the domestic demand for commodities not manufactured during the war is satisfied. The uses for hydrofluoric acid are expected to increase under the impetus of war-initiated research. In consideration of these and other factors some authorities predict a postwar demand for fluorite equal to about 60 to 75 per cent of the wartime production.1,2 Others believe that the postwar fluorite industry will be permanently expanded over its prewar status.3 ACKNOWLEDGMENT This paper is one of many reporting on various aspects of the Bureau of Mines program directed toward the more effective utilization of our mineral resources. The program has been under the general supervision of R. S. Dean, Assistant Director, since July 1942. The scope of the paper falls in the province of the Metallurgical Branch, whose activities embrace the separation of difficultly beneficiated ores, the production of pure metals from domestic deposits, the exploitation of marginal ore reserves, the recovery of secondary metals, and the improvement of present industrial metallurgical practice. DUring the summer of 1905 I was employed by the U. S. Geological Survey to investigate the geology, mining, and preparation of barite in most of the fields of the United States. The Eastern districts have been more or less completely described; the Virginia field in detail by Thomas L. Watson, in his paper, Geology of the Virginia Barite-Deposits,' and other fields in abstract, including statistics of production and references to current literature, by various authors.2 There have also been published a few details of the occurrence of barite in the lead-mines of Washington county, Mo.³ The other accounts of this district are erroneous and meager, and since this field is the most important one in the United States at the present time, a detailed description of the local geology seems doubly desirable. Barite-deposits are scattered over nearly the whole of Washington and adjoining counties, but the product is all mined from the areas indicated upon the sketch-map, Fig. 1, and is shipped from the stations of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern railway, between Blackwell and Potosi, from 45 to 60 miles SW. of St. Louis. The topography is for the most part gently rolling, with slightly graded streams, usually less than 200 ft. below the higher hill-tops. 10.5-1. Introduction. In the not-too-distant past, maintenance and the facilities for maintenance were considered a necessary evil to be given only secondary consideration in the development and planning of a surface mine operation. With the increasing sophistication of mining equipment and machinery, this concept has been replaced; and today's mine managers recognize that planning for adequate maintenance facilities is as important to a successful operation as a sound mining plan. This chapter will present the basic maintenance facilities and the fundamental considerations necessary to meet the varied requirements of surface mining. 10.5-2. Determination of Shop Facilities. The size, shape, and extent of maintenance facilities are contingent on the general mining plan, the location relative to outside facilities, and to the available capital. The type of construction employed is dependent on climatic conditions and preference. HAULAGE SYSTEMS. The type of haulage equipment used will dictate the kind of shops needed. Truck haulage requires entirely different facilities than rail haulage. Some mines will employ both systems, and can include hoists, skips, or conveyor belts in combination with locomotives or trucks. The requirements of each type will be discussed. MAINTENANCE ORGANIZATION. The pre-planning decision as to centralized maintenance vs. area maintenance, or a combination of both, will greatly affect the maintenance facilities required. A single pit with relatively short travel from shops to pit will probably have a centralized maintenance system. Oilfield emulsions are stabilized primarily by film-forming asphaltenes and resins containing organic acids and bases. Adding inorganic acids and bases radically changes the physical properties of these films and their emulsion-stabilizing properties. Interfacial films show one of three different physical characteristics when retracted in pendent drop tests. These compressed films have rigid, soap-type or minimum film properties depending on the quantity of asphaltenes and resins in the crude oil and on the pH and composition of the brine. There exists for each crude oil-brine system an optimum pH range over which the adsorbed film exhibits minimum contracted filtn properties. In this range, intmfacial tension is high — frequently near its maximum value — indicating the absence of highly surface-active specier; crude oil-brine emulsions generally show minimum stability; and surfactant requirements for breaking these emulsions are significantly reduced — sometimes no surfactant is needed. About two-thirds of the world's crude oil is produced as emulsions that must be treated (demulsified) to be marketed.' Approximately three-fourths of all domestic crude oil produced must be treated. The percentage of crude requiring treatment increases as fields become older and more water is produced. Demulsification most frequently is attained through use of surfactants, heat and electric treaters. It is estimated that over 75 percent of all oilfield emulsions are broken by chemicals generally containing alkylene oxide condensates. Although acids and bases are known to affect emulsion stability:-' they rarely are used in the oil field except in batch treatment of the most severe emulsions. Nevertheless, pH adjustment by using acids or bases in demulsification has some advantages over other methods. Mainly, it is cheaper. Acids and bases frequently are cheaper to use than surfactants, or can appreciably reduce the amount of surfactant required for demulsification. Secondary advantages are that less oil is lost by emulsi-fication into the aqueous phase, and that less corrosion is encountered when the optimum pH is basic. Limitations to the use of pH include (1) use in brines containing high concentrations of reactive ions, (2) closer supervision for pH control than is required for surfactants and (3) need for corrosion protection when the optimum pH is sufficiently acidic. These factors indicate that the economics of pH con trol in demulsification will be maximized when relatively large treating facilities are needed, when relatively large surfactant concentrations are required to break an emulsion, when a relatively low concentration of the aqueous phase is emulsified in the oil and when the emulsified aqueous phase contains relatively low concentrations of reactive ions. Because there are no broad guide lines for using pH control in breaking oillield emulsions (and because the limited guides available are highly specific and frequently contradictory), this paper will attempt to clarify the principles involved in using acids and bases to break emulsions. These principles also should be useful in refinery separations and in other oilfield applications where stable or unstable petroleum emulsions are involved. Principles of Emulsion Stability Oilfield emulsions generally occur as water droplets dispersed in oil (w/o) and occasionally as oil droplets in water (o/w). These emulsion droplets are usually in the 0.1- to 10-micron range. However, more coarsely dispersed water droplets frequently are present in the emulsion. Pure hydrocarbons and water will not form stable emulsii except in extreme dilutions where the large distance brtween droplets inhibits coalescence. An emulsion breaks because interfacial tension acts to minimize the surface area of the dispersed drops by coalescence. However, emulsions can be stablized for long periods of time by the presence of a third phase that adsorbs at the oil-water interface and inhibits coalescence of the dispersed phase."' Emulsions generally are stabilized by (1) repulsive charges on the surfaces of the dispersed phase and (2) adsorbed films that, being preferentially wetted by the continuous phase, act as a physical barrier to inhibit contact between the dispersed droplets. Both these factors generally are important in stabilizing and in breaking o/w emulsions. However, repulsive charges are less effective in stabilizing w/o emulsions which generally are stabilized by adsorbed films.V or this reason the nature and importance of these films at oil-water interfaces were examined closely; as will be shown, pH changes were found to affect the films significantly, and this work led to laboratory tests of pH- adjustment in emulsion breaking. Tremendous strides have been made in front end loaders in the last 15 years. Fifteen years ago a 21/4-cu-yd front end loader was the largest standard machine you could purchase. Today there are two commercially available 15-yd front end loaders and many 10-yd loaders. The estimated total worldwide market for all front end loaders over 1 cu yd has increased to over 30,000 units yearly. The trend for front end loaders, in general, and for the mining market, in particular, is to larger and larger loaders. Today there are 18 and 24-cu-yd front end loaders in prototype form. It is not inconceivable that within another 15 years there will be front end loaders in the 50-cu-yd class with design features quite different from today's. These larger loaders are being designed at the demand of the mining industry, and the design criteria are being directed at this market area. The costs of these larger loaders may be greater per unit of capacity, but it is the intent of the various manufacturers that they will be more reliable, be easier to service, give greater availability, live longer, and cost less to maintain, than previous loaders. It is also the intent of the manufacturers to compete directly with the large mining shovel as the front end loaders become appropriately larger and more reliable. There has been some trend in this direction in the past with smaller shovels and loaders. In Table 1 are data for U.S. production of front end loaders (5 to 6-cu-yd class and 10-cu-yd class) and U.S. production of cable-operated, crawler-mounted power shovels, draglines, and cranes (11/z to 5-cu-yd class) for the years 1965 and 1970 (Source: Bureau of Census, U.S. Department of Commerce). Many believe that the decline in shovel production, in particular, is due at least in part to the acceptance of the front end loader as a primary production tool. However, the foregoing comparison is for a smaller shovel class than for front end loaders. It has generally been a rule of thumb that a front end loader is competitive on a cost and production basis with a shovel when it is approximately twice as large as the shovel. This same relationship may not hold true with the larger 10 to 15-cu-yd electric shovels, but at some point, direct competition will probably occur. Current Trends There are many trends today that are significant. One major usage trend in large front end loaders involves load and carry operations. This application is defined as "performing the functions of loading, hauling and dumping with one machine over distances within its economical limits." Many people are using front end loaders to transport material as well as load it. It is estimated that nearly half of all 10-cu-yd front end loaders sold in 1970 went into primary load and carry work. Many times, significant savings result from using the load and carry system, instead of small truck and shovel operations, for distances in excess of 1000 ft. Strip mining in coal utilizes great numbers of front end loaders in this manner. In-pit crushing of limestone is developing on an ever-increasing level, especially in Europe, and this stimulates interest in load and carry operations. In Table 2 is a cost example for 10-cu-yd front end loader in a limestone quarry. More than likely, load and carry use will continue to increase over the next few years. While some types of mining do not lend themselves to load and carry in the pit, such areas as surge piles are applicable and should be studied. In the area of machine operating cost reduction, there

1 Raw coal from Truax-Traer Coal Co.'s Burning Star Slope mine, Jackson County, Ill., is brought to the surface by the new 42-in. slope belt haulage conveyor at the rate of 850 tph. The loading system shown above employs four storage tracks, two tail tracks for loading, and four 25-hp hoists, operating in pairs, and coupled to two dolly cars to move the trains of cars through the tipple. The system has a capacity for loading 1800 tph. One operator is needed to load on each of two shifts. A third man working for a few hours on night shift sets up for the morning cycle. Railroad crews bring in empties placing them in the storage yard, twenty cars to the track. Trains of empties are pulled through to the tail track and loaded on the return; hoists at opposite ends pull the trains in each direction. [ ] 2 Pairs of hoist drums are interconnected electric- ally by a Trench lay cable buried between the tracks. When one hoist operates moving the cars, the tail hoist idles with brake released. The operator, situated in the tipple over the cars, views the storage yard at the end of the first shift (left). When returning loaded cars to yard, four or five cars are held on the dolly to couple the next string of empties. Empties are ready for loading on the tail track (right). Differing from a gravity system in which empty and load tracks are on a slight grade, this system is designed for 80 railroad cars for a two-shift operation and one rail service per day.

THE presence of carbon de terre along the banks of the Illinois river was noted by the members of the Joliet and Marquette expeditions in 1673, and that may be referred to as the birthday of coal in the Middle West. The march of progress in the majority of indus-tries radiating from Chicago-one of the phenomena of history-is due in no small measure to this same carbon de terre and to the development and exploita-tion of the vast coal resources, which nature in a generous mood spread so lavishly over almost the en-tire state. The geological records indicate that coal-bearing rocks underlie three-quarters of Illinois, in-cluding 85 of the 102 counties and the entire area is estimated at from 36,000 to 42,000 square miles. Not all of the coal in this great area may be mined under the conditions existing today; producers are now taking the "cream" since industry demands the best quality and the lowest cost, thereby forcing competition among operators, which, in turn, com-pels the development of mines in those areas where the coal may be most readily .won, leaving the coal that is more difficult and expensive to mine to pos-terity. This is not such a bad arrangement, since the engineers of succeeding generations will enjoy the advantage of the experience of their ancestors, where-by they should profit and know how to mine a 2-ft. seam with as much economy and dispatch as we today work coal of thrice that thickness. During the period between 1830 and 1850, Illinois coal-mining progressed from the art of scratching along the outcrop to the development of small mines, mostly slopes, drifts and shallow shafts, but the real progress in the industry was coincident with the con-struction of railroads.

Asbestos ranks among the leading minerals produced in Canada. It is also mined in Russia, Rhodesia, South Africa, Cyprus, Italy, the U.S.A., Japan, China and several other countries. The most abundant variety, chrysotile, and also the most valuable form of asbestos produced, makes up 90% of the world's supply. In Canada, chrysotile is found in the provinces of British Columbia, Ontario, Newfoundland as well as in Quebec, the latter accounting for almost 90% of all the fibre produced in this country. A number of developments emerging this year could make 1968 a record production and export year for Canada's asbestos mining industry. Asbestos fibre consumption in increasing in the U.S., Canada, up 10% to date this year, Japan and in Latin America. Demand in Western Europe is again on the upswing, following a cut-back last year. As a result, shipments from Canadian mines for the first eight months of this year reached some 916,968 tons versus 873,402 in 1967, an increase of 43,566 tons or 5%. Indications are that Canadian asbestos production will for the first time ever top 1.5 million tons in 1968.

SacRamento Hill is a mass of granite porphyry intruded along a fault between Paleozoic sediments and pre-Cambrian schists in the Bisbee district, Cochise County, Arizona. The intrusion invaded both walls of the fault to a large extent, and the accompanying extensive mineralization of the Paleozoic limestones is the locus of the great high-grade copper orebodies of the Bisbee mines. Prior to 1909, although the presence of ore in the masa of the hill itself had long been suspected, systematic exploration had not been attempted. A few shallow pits on the surface here and there had disclosed some chal-cocite with associated carbonates as stringers in a mass of strongly brccciated, silicified, and iron-stained porphyry. The workings in the surrounding limestones had penetrated the porphyry in a dozen or SO places for some distance from the contact but had disclosed no ore. However, the rock had been largely altered to quartz and sericite and very thoroughly impregnated with pyrite and traces of the copper sulphides. A close geological study of the conditions, both surface and underground, strengthened these suspicions, and plans for prospecting the hill were made in 1909. Reference to the accompanying illustrations, Figs. 1 and 2, will give an idea of the general appearance of the surface. The mineralization is more intense in two main zones, one at the west end and the other at the east end of the hill. The outcrop of the hill is elliptical and approximately 3,000 ft. long by 1,400 ft. wide. The Sacramento shaft, which is the main hoisting shaft of the mine and situated at the east end of the hill, as shown by the accompanying map (Fig. 3), offered a convenient base for prospecting that end of the hill, while the workings from the Holbrook shaft offered a similar opportunity at the west end. The choice of level for the first work was determined by analogy with the most favorable depth for enrichment below surface obscrved in the other disseminated deposits of the Southwest.

The flotation rate of coal has been studied using a continuous laboratory flotation cell and a multiple exposure photographic technique. The effects of particle size, reagent additions and cell turbulence on the flotation rate of coal have been investigated. The results have been analyzed in terms of current theories of particle bubble encounter and adhesion. The rupture forces which occur during particle bubble encounter have been shown to have an important effect on the flotation rate of coarse coal particles. The flotation of coal is a time dependent process, and in order to obtain a complete understanding of the operation it is necessary to determine the kinetics of the process. In coal flotation, the flotation rate and the associated values of cell productivity in terms of tons per kilowatt-hour and tons per cubic foot of cell volume are of greater importance than in most other mineral flotation operations. The reasons for this are associated with the low unit value of coal and the relatively high cost of coal flotation compared with other coal cleaning processes. An important aspect of coal flotation kinetics is the design of coal flotation cells. The cells used in many coal cleaning operations are often replicas of those used for the treatment of sulfide ores and are not necessarily suitable for the treatment of coal washing pulps, which usually contain a higher percentage of coarse and floatable material than the sulfide pulps for which the cells were designed. This disadvantage of many coal flotation cells has been recognized by Russian engineers who, by the addition of baffles to their subaeration coal flotation cells have increased the cell capacity by 100%. Investigation of the variables which influence flotation kinetics and cell productivity are, therefore, important to the coal industry where flotation is the only accepted method of cleaning the fine (-1/2mm) coal. The kinetics of the flotation process have been investigated in detail by Schumann10 who developed a continuous flotation cell which permitted the study of flotation under steady state conditions. This technique has been used by Gaudin et a1.,6 Brown and Smith and recently by Jowett and Savfi.7 The latter authors have developed a refined mathematical treatment for interpreting the results of continuous laboratory tests. Attempts have also been made to study flotation kinetics using conventional batch testing techniques. The experimental difficulties, however, and the problems of determining the order of the flotation rate process have made this technique of dubious value. A summary of the proposed rate equations for batch testing and the difficulties associated with this technique is given by Brown and Smith. 2 The experimental techniques described above are concerned with the rate of production of froth product. A formulation is given for radiant heat loss from the surface of molten steel held in a ladle and numerical solutions are presented for the resultant integrodif-ferential equations. The results are shown on plots of the net rate of heat loss against time, with the geometlry, emissivities, thermal properties of the walls, and Preheat as parameters. It was found that the rate of the vadiant heat loss from the exposed metal surface was comparable to the conductive losses from the Portion of the metal in direct contact with the walls. The radiant heat loss was markedly affected by the geometry and by the thermal properties of the walls the net radiant heat loss from the steel could be drastically reduced by providing a top cover and also by the provision of preheat. The results of this work are thought to be relevant to heat loss calculatious concerned with vacuum degassing and with operatzons in which molten metals are held in ladles. WhEN molten steel is held or transferred in ladles heat losses inevitably occur. The accurate assessment of these heat losses is of importance in process design considerations, as the temperature of the metal may have to meet rigid specifications in certain stages of the processing sequence. As shown in Fig. 1, the principal mechanisms responsible for heat loss are: i) Conduction into the walls and ii) Thermal radation from the top metal surface (possibly augmented by natural convection) The conductive heat loss may be readily calculated as much information is available in the literature on both the general theory1'' and on its particular applications to ladle heat loss calculations. Evaluation of the radiant component of the heat loss is less straight-forward. In two recent papers it has been shown that the presence of a slag layer 2 to 3 in. thick would prevent any significant heat loss for periods up to an hour,5'" however, should bare metal be exposed, constituting the radiant surface, substantial heat losses could occur. This latter case is of considerable practical interest in various degassing operations and in the vacuum processing of certain specialty steels, where the top surface of the metal is not covered by a protective slag layer. Under these conditions a substantial radiant flux is emitted by the top metal surface; part of this flux leaves the system, part of it falls in the ladle walls. The radiant flux incident on the ladle walls is in part absorbed and conducted away, and in part reflected and re radiated. The purpose of the paper is to present a general formulation of the problem, the resultant solution of which should enable computation of the net radiant heat loss from the metal surface. The principal variables, the effect of which will be investigated, include initial metal temperature, geometry, thermal and radiative properties of the wall, and various modes of preheat. FORMULATION Consider a cylindrical enclosure, shown in Fig. 2, with a diameter D, height H, and wall thickness W, the cover at the top of the cylinder having a wall thickness L. If the temperature of the base (representing the top surface of the metal) is kept constant, say, Tb, the problem is to calculate the net rate of heat loss from the base as a function of time, geometry, the initial temperature distribution, and the thermal properties of the system. As customary, the formulation will consist of the mathematical statement of the conservation of thermal energy within the system.

The self-diffusion coefficients of ß tin have been deterttlltled using a plating and sectioning technique. The principal diffusivities pavallel and perpendicu1ar to the "c" axis are given by the Arrhenius relations Dc = 8.2 exp (-25,600/RT) sq cnl per sec and Da = 1.4 exp (-23,300/RT) sq cm) per sec. The results are discussed in terms of a vacancy mecharism of diffusion. In conjunction with an investigation of diffusion in dilute indium-tin alloys we have reexamined self-diffusion in tin single crystals. The published self-diffusion coefficients of tin, eensham') have always appeared anomalous in comparison to diffusion data for other metals and do not correlate with parameters derived from creep tests.' In addition to the necessity of confirming the self-diffusion values for use in analyzing the alloy work, self-diffusion in an anisotropic lattice is of considerable fundamental interest and confirmation of the published data seemed worthwhile. Dynamic elastic properties of dry and water-saturated Green River shale samples were computed from compressional- and shear-wave velocity measurements. P- and 5-wave velocity measurements were made in three mutually perpendicular directions with respect to the bedding planes. Measurements were also made in several different directions by varying the angle between the bedding planes and the direction of propagation of the wave for angles of 0, 30, 45, 60 and 909 The oriented samples were subjected to both confining pressure and axial loads, in excess of the confining stress, in the direction of propagation. In general, P- and S-wave velocities increased with increasing stress levels, with a corresponding increase in Young's modulus. Water saturation caused the P-wave velocity to increase and the S-wave velocity to decrease. Elastic moduli decreased upon saturation, except for Pois son's ratio, which increased, indicating some degree of weakening of the material. The samples showed a moderate degree of anisotropy; this was to be expected from the laminated nature and shallow occurrence of Green River shale. INTRODUCTION This paper presents some results of an experimental determination of the elastic coefficients of anisotropic materials (in particular, finely layered rocks and minerals such as Green River shale) from measurements of dilatational and shear-ultrasonic-wave velocities. Ultrasonic techniques have been used extensively in nondestructive testing. Several methods have been proposed by Mcskimmin, 1 and some of these have been used successfully to measure ultrasonic velocities in rocks. Hughes and Cross, 2 Wyllie et al., 3 and Birch 4,5 developed pulse first-arrival techniques for the measurement of dilatational and shear velocities. Williams and Lamb 6 used the method of cancellation of a traveling wave, which was later modified by Myers et al.' and perfected by McSkimmin. 8 Although this method is highly accurate, it has not been used as widely as the pulse-transmission methods recently reported by Jamieson and Hoskins 9 King,10 and Mattaboni and Schreiber. 11 It has been common practice to use some form of crystal transducers, either quartz or ceramic, that has been cut or polarized in different directions in order to generate either compressional or shear waves. However, accurate determination of shear wave velocities has been difficult due to problems that arise in obtaining a pure shear wave from cross-polarized crystals, which usually also generate a small amount of compressional energy. As reported by Gregory, 12 this energy can be seen as a long precursor preceding the sharp break of the shear first arrival. The need for generating pure shear waves led to interest in mode-conversion techniques, which are based upon conversion of the mode of vibration through wave reflection or refraction at a discontinuity. Arenberg13 showed that for certain materials and for certain angles of incidence it is possible to generate pure shear modes by reflection at a boundary. Jamieson and Hoskins 9 used a pyrex glass-air interface for generating pure shear waves, and King 10 used this method successfully for measuring shear-wave velocities in rocks. Gregory l4 arrived at a similar result by refraction of a wave at an aluminum-oil interface. A plane compressional wave, traveling in the oil phase, is incident on the aluminum at an angle larger than the critical angle for compressional waves, and thereby generates a purely transverse, plane-polarized wave in the aluminum. During the last few years methods have been developed that allow the simultaneous determination of shear and compressional velocities in solids.

THE Grand Junction Pilot Plant, operated by National Lead Co. Inc., for the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, is engaged in the amenability testing of orebodies to establish design and cost data for commercial mills and to test new processes for recovery of uranium from ores. Test work was performed to study the effects of several variables on leaching of uranium ores in carbonate solutions. Many of these variables had been investigated in the laboratory, but pilot plant tests were desirable to evaluate their importance in semi-works equipment and to predict optimum operating conditions for future commercial mills. The results of these tests should serve as a guide in selecting the most efficient and economical method of leaching uranium ores amenable to a carbonate process. This article is concerned with a process in which uranium is extracted from the ore by a hot Na2CO3- NaHCO3 solution; the uranium-bearing solution is separated from the solid residue by filtration, and uranium is then precipitated by chemical means.

The approximate production of petroleum in the various fields and for the country as a whole is shown in the following table, the figures for the later months of the year being estimated. Among the developments of the year may be mentioned the finding by the Standard Oil Co. of a small production, about 6290 bbl., at Aguas Blancas in the Province of Salta near the Bolivian border, and of about 88,000 bbl. at Lomitas, near Tartagal in the same province. The Government (Yaciementos Petroliferos Fiscales) in the last four months of the year also obtained about 6290 bbl, from Quebrada Galarce. .The oil found in Salta is of good grade and while the quantity is small great hopes of larger production are entertained.
