The Buick mill is located at the site of the old Buick general store, approximately 4 miles south of Bixby, Missouri on route KK. It is a part of the operations in the area now called the "New Lead Belt". The ore body lies at an elevation of 270 feet above sea level, and is fairly flat lying, becoming slightly deeper toward the south. The mineralization is due to the secondary deposition of galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, calcite, dolomite and some localized drusy quartz in a country rock of dolomitic limestone. The galena is fairly coarse grained with some large crystaline structure, and some oxidized surfaces. The sphalerite is fine grained- small crystals containing Cd (about 0.7%) and Ag (about 10 oz per ton) in solid solution. The chalcopyrite is fine grained, fine crystals that are sometimes massive in nature. The mine plan is a modified room and pillar system. Broken ore at the mine face will be transported to several different ore passes by rubber tired load-haul-dump units. Ore passes will drop the ore to a rail haulage level some 90 feet below the mining level where bottom dump cars will deliver it to a 42 in. Nordberg gyratory crusher. Two 12 ton capacity skips in balance carry the ore some 1,200 feet to the surface. The hoist is equipped with automatic controls for loading, hoisting and unloading.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory research to determine the applicability of heavy liquid separation to the evaluation of certain mica ores and plant products. After careful standardization of the particular mica ores and associated gangue, accurate analysis of muscovite content could be obtained from results of heavy liquid separation. Where applicable, the method should be particularly suited to the analysis of ores and control of plant operations wherein savings in time would be of considerable advantage. Specifically, there are many instances where a quick plant control method should enable the production of a more uniform grade of mica concentrate. The laboratory use of various heavy liquids for separating minerals of different specific gravities has been recognized for many years.1-8 Sink-float procedures have proven their utility as a rapid and moderately accurate means for determining the mineral content of ores, test products, and plant products in certain nonmetallic concentrating operations. A standard method of analysis for mica in ore samples has not been published or generally accepted by the mica industry. Recently, the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated methods for analyzing mica by heavy liquid separation. This report has been prepared to make the methods available to others who may need simple, relatively rapid methods of determining the mica content of ores and plant products. The heavy liquid method of mica determination has recently been adopted by one of the major mica producers for evaluating exploration and mill control samples. DESCRIPTION OF THE ORES AND HEAVY LlQLllD The weathered mica pegmatite ores used in the investigation were obtained from commercial mica op erations in Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina. The major mineral constituents of the ores were muscovite, quartz, kaolin, and minerals of the feldspar group. The ores also contained minor quantities of biotite, limonite, and tourmaline. A comparison of the specific gravities of the major constituents of the ores (muscovite 2.76 +, quartz 2.65, kaolin 2.61, and feldspar 2.57), indicates that an effective separation of muscovite from the other minerals can be made in heavy liquids at a specific

Screening by centrifugal force is a unique subject, for all vibrating screens, with but one exception, depend on gravity alone to pass material through a sizing mesh or screen cloth. Centrifugal screening is one of the greatest advancements made in screening since the development of vibrating screens. It makes possible sizing in a range previously im-practical by mechanical methods. The centrifugal screen is specially designed for fine sizing from No. 4 separations to finer than No. 100 separations. Centrifugal force provides a positive control of factors that make fine particle separation practical and effective as opposed to gravity which is a fixed force acting only in a fixed direction, The centrifugal screen provides a control of the force of material against the screening surface, and also controls the distance of departure of the material from the surface and its rate of return. The centrifugal screen has a rotating drum that becomes a natural fan blowing air outward through the material being screened and carrying float dust and fines through the apertures with it. Screening by centrifugal force is an unique subject, for with the exception of only one vibrating screen presently on the market, all vibrating screens depend upon gravity to pass material through a sizing mesh or screen cloth. This one screen that sizes by centrifugal force and utilizes gravity only to convey material along the screen, is the Symons V-Screen. The requirements of the industrial minerals industry to meet ever-increasing stringent fine sizing specifications by a practical mechanical method accentuates the weakness of gravity, a fixed force acting in a fixed direction, as a prime force for fine sizing. It was apparent a force other than gravity was needed. This led to the development of a centrifugal screen to meet modern demands for practical fine sizing operations. Gyratory-type screens in use today were originally designed in a day when a 1/4-in. separation was normally considered fine sizing and 1/8-in. separations were extremely fine sizing. Although gyratory-type screens are sometimes used for separating below 1/8-in., they are not practical screens for this purpose. They were not designed to do this type of work. A growing demand for a practical means of making positive mechanical separations in a range of from 1/8 in. downward led to the development of the vibrating screen. During the past three decades, the oil industry has expended increasing eflorts seeking improved drilling tools or systems to reduce drilling costs. The total cost of these efforts is unknown, but it certainly amounts 10 tens of millions of dollars. Most of the "new" system that past and present investigators have sought to develop actually are old public information. In seeking to implement new-systern concepts, investigators have tested the following: impact at frequencies ranging from 6 to 300 cycles per second; electrical, mechanical and hydraulic meam of actuating percussors; bit rotary speeds up to 2,000 rpm; electric and hydraulic bottom-hole means of rotating bits; bottom-hole machines with power outputs up to 400 hp; shock waves; explosives; high-velocity pellets; flame; arc; grinding wheels; abrasive jets; erosion by high-velocity gases; chemical attack; electric current; magnetic waves; retractable rock bits; reelable drill pipe; continuous coring with reverse circulation; and automation of drilling rigs. Table I shows how these investigations are grouped for discussion purposes in this paper. In spite of these efforts to discover new and improved systems, rotary drilling main;aim its economic leadership. Undoubtedly, rotary drilling costs will continue to be reduced by rigid application of the best available technology and by development of new rotary technology. In view of the extensive past development programs, however, significant long-range improvement appears to be a research, not a development problem. Research must postulate and prove theories and principles governing variour subsurface rock-failure processes pertinent to both rotary and new systems. Ah, research must produce physical and engineering data relative to these processes. When such information is available, earth boring will graduate from an art to a science. Major improvements in rotary drilling can then be expected, and the systematic evolution of an improved drilling method can be initiated—with a strong probability for success. Development of drilling methods other than rotary drilling has been one approach investigated by the industry as a means for reducing drilling costs. Major cost-reduction efforts, however, have been centered on engineering development work aimed at incremental improvements in rotary drilling. A relatively minor effort has been expended to establish basic physical principles and engineering data pertaining to the earth-boring process which can serve as a foundation for the development of cost-cutting drilling hardware. Current oil-industry economic trends have added impetus to the need for effective programs to reduce drilling costs. However, areas for expanded future efforts should be selected only after careful study of past investigations. It is the purpose of this paper to review past and Dresent industry efforts to develop new drilling tools or systems and to suggest areas where additional science is needed. Past reviews of drilling methods have been limited to a few processes prominent at the time the reviews were made. This paper seeks to present a concise, well organized review of all methods that have received actual development or test work. The preparation of a paper seeking to review all past developments is fraught with many difficulties, not the least of which are errors in or obsolesence of printed matter used as source material and the lack of data on industry developments which have not been published. It is well known that plastic deformation alters many of the properties of a metal and subsequent heat-treatment partially or completely restores these properties.l In the deformed or strained state, the metal is unstable and tends to change toward a condition called a "strain-free state." The transformation occurs through recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth—processes that may take place singly or in combination. The distortion of the lattice of an individual grain of a metal in a state of strain may be rather complex in nature, because plastic deformation produces: (I) dislocations within mosaic blocks; (2) elastic variations of the lattice spacings; and (3) gross alterations throughout the lattice, especially along slip planes, along composition planes between a grain and its mechanical twins, and along boundaries of deformation bands. These gross alterations are of the nature of bent planes or rotated regions of the crystal lattice and are revealed by a spread in the orientation of the grain. Although we cannot describe these strains and their formation accurately because of insuffcient knowledge, we can, nevertheless, use the information as well as possible to obtain a better understanding of recovery processes. In recovery, the lattice of a grain is not made anew as it is in recrystallization, but is improved or mended in such a way that the basic structure remains unaltered: Until recatly observations were .that recovery produced no marked changes in the shapes of spots in Laue diffraction patterns, whereas recrystallization did, but now it is known for silicon ferrite2 that Laue spots may become quite sharp entirely through recovery. Consequently, the shape of Laue spots alone would not be a suitable test to distinguish between recovery and recrystallization. There is considerable evidence that the micro-structure usually does not change visibly during recovery. Absence of a visible change in the microstructure, therefore, provides a sufficient test of recovery in many cases. However, including this observation in a definition of recovery as a necessary condition (this is usually done) is unfortunate, because recovery may, as will become evident later, produce new grain boundaries that are visible not only in the microstructure but also in the macrostructure. For the present, therefore, let us say that a necessary condition for a process to be one of recovery is that the principal orientation or orientations of a deformed grain be essentially unchanged throughout the transformation toward the strain-free state. Several transformations may occur that fulfill this condition, and the nature of the distortion in a grain indicates what these must be if the lattice is to be mended in part or fully. DISCUSSIONS of processes for the manufacture of white lead generally open with the statement that white lead is the oldest chemical pigment known to man. This fact is of more than historical interest; in the light of the present extensive use of white lead, ii indicates that the .compound possesses characteristics that make it unique among white pigments, and superior to all ;in its particular field. A greater variety of processes have been proposed for manufacturing white lead than for any other one chemical compound. Only a few of these processes have come into commercial use, however, and a large part of the present production here and abroad is made by the process used in ancient times. The outstanding disadvantages of the old process are that it is slow and laborious, affords no control of the product, and yields at best an impure material lacking in uniformity. Improved processes, sometimes classed all together as "quick processes," have had as their main object the shortening of the time required. Most of them accomplish this and some have yielded a superior product as well, but only two or three are now in use commercially. For centuries the manufacture and mixing of paints has been treated as an art, and the practice has been much influenced by tradition and precedent. There is a reluctance to abandon old materials for this purpose, and as few new uses for white lead have been developed, the adoption of the quick processes has been slow. The electrolytic production of white lead is not-new, a large number of processes and forms of apparatus have been proposed and patented within the past 25 years, all directed toward the, production of white lead, wholly or in part, by electrolysis. One or two of these processes were tried commercially but proved unsuccessful.

One of the major problems of operation in the anthracite industry is the disposal and handling of refuse—not because of its complexity but because of the quantity and type of material involved. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the kinds of refuse, methods of disposal, quantities of material to be handled and equipment used, together with present day application at specific operations in the Northern, Eastern Middle, Western Middle and Southern anthracite fields. For the purpose of this paper, refuse is considered to be any material that has no present or foreseeable future value and that must be handled and disposed of in the process of mining and preparing anthracite for market. Included in this classification are tunnel rock, mine rock, cleaner plant refuse, breaker refuse, old timber, ashes and silt. Disposal Methods Old timber is disposed of either by burning or by depositing on the refuse bank. Burning is preferred because timber on the refuse bank is a potential fire hazard. Ashes are deposited on a separate bank, mixed with other refuse, or flushed into old mine workings. In many places, the latter practice has caused considerable difficulty in preparation of coal mined from these areas. In depositing ashes on the surface, it is wise to refrain from mixing them with material containing coal as such contamination may prevent reclamation of the coal in future years. Tunnel work, mine rock, cleaner plant and breaker refuse compose the bulk of the material to be disposed of and handled, and are referred to collectively as "refuse" in this paper. Waste material in or adjacent to the coal beds may be removed at the working face wherever possible. This can be done in flat or lightly pitching beds, and in the Northern field represents a sizable percentage of this type of refuse handled. In the other three coal fields, this method of disposal cannot often be used. Refuse not removed at the working face is taken to the surface and generally is deposited on banks; occasionally it is crushed and flushed into old mine workings. Breaker refuse often is used for constructing berms for silt-retention basins. Disposal Problems The problem of handling refuse is different for each operation, owing to topographical conditions, quantity of material to be handled, anticipated requirements and types of equipment in use elsewhere at the operation. Preparation plants with limited refuse-disposal areas, excessive grades to reach the required elevation and long hauls to disposal areas not readily accessible require the selection of equipment to best meet the conditions. THIS paper. will present the results of our studies on the kinetics of the gas phase reactions of co-lumbium and tantalum with O2, N2 and H2. Studies on zirconium and titanium have been previously reported.9,11 Due to their high melting points and their many excellent physical and chemical properties, colurn-bium and tantalum have been finding their places as useful metals in science and industry. Chemically the metals are very inert to gas and liquid phase corrosion at room temperature. However, at moderate temperatures of 250°C and higher the metals react readily with oxygen and hydrogen. It is of interest to study the gas phase reactions of these metals for the following reasons: (1) to compare the rates of the several reactions with those of other metals and to correlate the rate data with theory and structure predictions, (2) to add basic information on the practical difficulties of the reduction, refining and working of columbium and tantalum, (3) to anticipate new uses for the metals and (4) to understand the role that the metals play as components in high temperature alloys. Literature Survey A number of papers exist in the literature on the gas phase reactions of columbium and tantalum with O2, N2 and H2; however, only fragmentary data have been reported on the kinetics of these reactions. Although the free energy of formation of the oxide Ta2O520at 25°C has been determined and some thermodynamic work has been reported on columbium and its oxides, the data are not sufficient to make equilibria calculations at elevated temperatures. Oxidation: 1. Kinetics: The rate of oxidation of columbium and tantalum has been studied by McAdam and Geil23 using the interference color method. Tantalum is reported to oxidize more slowly than columbium, zirconium and iron. The amounts of oxidation of columbium after 20 hr in air for several temperatures are reported by the Fansteel Metallurgical Corporation.36 Columbium starts to oxidize in air at about 200°C. The oxide is said to be adherent and prevents further oxidation until the temperature is raised. Columbium is reported not to become brittle on heating in air for short periods like tantalum because the oxide film prevents further reaction. The columbium oxides dissolve into the metal when heated in a vacuum at temperatures between red heat and 1200°C. Above 1200°C the oxides are reported to evaporate. Columbium, in the oxide free state, is an active getter in vacuum tubes. 2. Preparation and Structure: G. Grube, O. Kuba-schewski and K. Zwiauer15 have studied the decomposition of Cb2O5 in argon. They find that CbO2 is formed slowly at 1150° and rapidly at 1300°C. Cb2O5 can be reduced to CbO2 by moist H2. The reduction of this dioxide to the lower oxides is rapid. By varying conditions CbO2, Cb2O3, CbO and Cb2O can be formed. CbO2, CbO and Cb2O have independent lattices while Cb2O3 is a stoichiometric mixture of CbO and CbO2. In a later paper O. Kuba-schewski" has shown that CbO is cubic and that CbO2 has a rutile type of lattice. The most exhaustive work on the oxides of columbium is that of G. Brauer.8 The number and constitution of the solid phases in the binary system Cb-O were investigated by the preparative, analytical and X ray methods. He indicates that only the oxides Cb2O5, CbO2 and CbO exist with limited regions of homogeneity. The solid oxide Cb,O, exists

WithIn the past few years, considerable development has been made in the coal-mining industry in Illinois and Indiana and it is the purpose of the authors to record its most important phases. Perhaps the two most striking features are the entry into the producing fields of certain large consumers of coal and the magnitude of some of the new operations. Mines are now being equipped by the Chicago & Northwestern R. R., the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy R. R., the Standard Oil Co., of Indiana, and the Union Electric Light & Power Co. of St. Louis. Besides, the U. S. Steel Corpn. has increased its coal-mining activities by commencing operations on its large holdings northeast of Benton, Franklin CO., Ill. Until recent years, the supply of coal has commonly been adequate and prices have generally been favorable, especially to large consumers, as the magnitude of their purchases enabled them to obtain satisfactory quotations from producers. In fact, most consumers of coal have believed that they could buy their fuel more satisfactorily in the open market than they could produce it themselves. The entry of the United States into the war was accompanied by various disarrangements of industrial conditions, and a demand for coal in excess of the supply seemed likely to be experienced for an indefinite period. Under these circumstances it seemed that the greatest assurance of a supply of fuel was its production by the operation of mines. In the case of the Chicago & Northwestern R. R. and the U. S. Steel Corpn. the production of coal has been carried on for many years with satisfactory results, but the C. B. & Q. R. R., the Union Electric Light & Power Co. and the Standard Oil Co. of Indiana had not been producers of coal, at least in this district. Apparently the most impressive feature of the newest mines is their capacity, for in some cases it is planned that production shall be in the neighborhood of 1000 tons per hr. There are mines now in this field having nearly that output, but these were not planned for such output; in fact, when the shafts were sunk and the machinery installed it was generally supposed that the daily outputs would be only in the neighborhood of 4000 to 5000 tons. For more than 25 years modern mining has been carried on in the Island of Cyprus, Mediterranean Sea, by the Cyprus Mines Corp. of Los Angeles, Calif. The general features of these operations have been described.' From 1935 to June 30, 1940, top slicing in the Mavrovouni mine produced in excess of 2,000,000 long tons. The rate for the last part of this period was approximately 50,000 tons per month. Description of Ore Bodies The shape Of the Ore body now being top sliced in the Mavrovouni mine is an inclined irregular pyritic pipe or chimney of large dimensions) extending from unknown depths below the bottom level at elevation 250 ft below sea level) to the highest level at elevation 400 ft above sea level. The present surface above the ore body lies between 550 and 650 ft elevation. Undoubtedly the Ore body extended to surface and was Mined by the ancients by opencast and underground methods. The old pits were gradually filled up by erosion until now they show as slight depressions in the topography. The largest area of the Ore body is at elevation 170 ft below sea level, where the horizontal section is almost elliptical, with a width of 600 ft and a length of 1000 ft. Below this elevation the shape of the ore body continues to be elliptical but with reduced dimensions. Above this elevation it rises flatly towards the south with a substantial depression in the upper-side of the chimney and irregular ridges or wings rising on each side. It gradually grows smaller as it rises. The ore body is a pyritic replacement of andesitic extrusives which occur as flows and pillow lavas. With the exception of the upper portions of one or two small offshoots rising from the main ore body, all ore is completely surrounded by andesite. Most of the andesite lying above the ore body is covered by marl and Clay sedimentaries of Miocene and later age, The Miocene is presumed to be older than the ore mineralization. That portion of the andesites which lies between the sedimentaries and the ore body has been broken by slumpage, and weathered, and iron-Stained by the descending meteoric waters, It is a mass of crushed material that caves and follows downward readily as the top-slice stopes retreat. The main ore body is a heavy cupreous pyrites mass assaying on the average about 4.0 pet Cu; 48.0, S; and 42.0, Fe. In places the copper drops below 1.0 pet. on the borders of this heavy sulphide ore body lie disseminated cupreous pyrites ore deposits of large dimensions. some portions of these appear to be closely related to the heavy sulphide ore, as the ratio of copper to pyrite is about the same. The greater part of the disseminated ore, most of which lies immediately to the east of the main Ore body, contains less than 0.10 pct Cu and about 25.0 to 30.0 pct S. 'This probably can

THE crystal structure of Zral, the compound richest in zirconium (91.03 pct Zr by weight) in the system Zr-Al, has been found to be ordered face-centered-cubic. This compound is of particular interest, since it is encountered as the precipitated phase in potentially useful zirconium-rich alloys. It forms peritectoidally from body-centered-cubic zirconium and Zr,Al at about 975°C. The Zr-A1 constitution diagram has been reported by McPherson and Hansen.' For the primary determination a 100 g ingot was prepared by arc-melting in a water-cooled copper crucible under purified argon. The raw materials were crystal-bar zirconium (a purity of better than 99.7 pct) and spectroscopically pure aluminum. The ingot was double melted, examined metallographi-cally, and found to be quite uniform as shown in Fig. 1. The hardness of the as-cast button was VHN 390 to 445. A 20 mil diam specimen was prepared from annealed (900°C) filings of Zr,Al. The specimen was mounted in a 5 cm radius powder camera and an 8 hr exposure was taken using copper radiation with a nickel filter. The structure of the compound Zral was found to be ordered face-centered-cubic of the Cuau type, with an a,, value of 4.37220.003A. Its calculated density is 5.976e0.013 g per cu cm. The relative intensities for the lines were calculated using the formula 1+cos2 20 I oc----------------- • p • /F7 sin2 0 cos 0 1 + COS' 20 where----------------is the Lorentz polarization fac- sin2 0 cos 0 tor, p is the multiplicity factor, and F is the structure factor. The X-ray data are given in Table I. The compound has exhibited plasticity when present as particles in a matrix of a zirconium. During hot working at about 900°C, the compound has been found to deform plastically to the extent that some of the particles exhibit a length-to-width ratio greater than 4:1 as shown in Fig. 2. In answer to the discussion of ref. 1, McPherson and Hansen pointed out that the compound may be cold rolled and reduced as much as 33 pct. Zr,Al has also been found2 under certain conditions to precipitate in lamellar form at grain boundaries of the a phase of hexagonal-close-packed zirconium. TO measure the absolute conductivity of metallic specimens it is generally necessary to have exact geometrical shapes and good electrical contact with the test-piece. To overcome limitations of the standard methods, an electronic conductivity-meter* Trade name, Sigmatest; model Dr. F. Forster; Reutlingen, Ger-many. has been developed, which works on the principle of inducing high frequency eddy-currents in the specimens and measuring the reaction of these curients on a measuring coil.',' To attach the instrument to the test specimen, a flat area of about 10 mm diam is all that is necessary. The reading is taken off a scale calibrated in pet of International Annealed Copper Standard. The induced eddy-currents are propagated in a circular motion parallel to the surface. Thickness of the layer included in a measurement depends on the frequency used. With a frequency of 60 kc per sec, the penetration of the currents was 0.8 mm at the upper limit of the scale, and 2 mm at the lower limit. The method is limited to nonferrous metals and other applications have been described elsewhere." The object of the present investigation was to detect the formation and growth of surface layers of differing conductivity, and to determine the depth to which these changes could be observed. A well known phenomenon which illustrates the problem is the internal oxidation of certain silver alloys containing base metal solutes, such as copper or cadmium, when they are annealed in an oxidizing atmosphere.4, 5 Until now, the only methods available for following these phenomenon have been metallo-graphic examination and hardness tests.0, 7 Changes in mechanical properties of copper alloys by internal oxidation were recently discussed in a more general way by Martin and Smith." When measuring these conductivity changes it must be remembered that the only absolute values of conductivity are those of 1) the nontreated homogeneous specimen, and 2) the final values obtained with a surface layer of depth comparable to the penetration of the eddy-currents. All intermediate values refer to the mixed conductivities of the transformed surface layer and the untransformed alloy, and are thus readings of relative value only. Experimental Results Specimens were annealed for 1/2 hr at 800°C in hydrogen, and the internal oxidation was carried out by thermal treatment in air at 800°C. Fig. 1 shows the results of the first series of experiments. With internal oxidation of a solid solution of 8 pet Cd in silver, the conductivity rises continuously until the surface layer formed has become thick enough to be the deciding factor (about 400µ). Precipitates of CdO are mainly in the form of points, Fig. 2, and, as a result, the electric contact between the silver crystals is not distorted by them. Brine11 tests were run with a 1.25 mm ball and a 7.812 kg load. The specimen annealed in hydrogen and oxidized to a depth of 400µ had a hardness of 40 Bhn,

EXTENSIVE and diversified resources justify large populations and great industries. To carry on the business of commerce and meet the demands of large populations, the utilization of tunnels in some form for transportation purposes constitutes an important link in modern civilization. The driving of tunnels has been appropriated by the tunneling branch of the heavy-construction industry, and the progressive steps taken by modern tunnel builders were not even dreamed of 50 years ago. Great strides have been made toward more rapid progress in tunneling in the United States during the past 10 years. Tunneling consists of a definite cycle of operations developed from ideas that are crystallized and translated into action programs through various engineering phases that begin with the first preliminary survey and do not end until the job is completed. Once the line of the bore is established and a time set for the completion of the work, the face must advance according to estimates prepared before the work commences. This schedule must be followed in regular sequence from the moment the drills start against a new face of rock until they are ready again to drill the succeeding face, constituting a round.1 Mining is largely tunneling carried on under conditions often more inherently hazardous than actual tunnel construction, but for various reasons1 tunneling is more hazardous than mining in any branch of the mineral industry, On the other hand, obstacles are sometimes encountered in heavy-construction tunneling projects that when met in mining enterprises do not offer comparable tasks to avoid or overcome them. One of these is the existence of water under high pressures. In mining enterprises, various alternatives offer a solution in driving a tunnel, even to the extent of its discontinuance or the abandonment of the mine, but a "construction" tunnel usually must go forward because some important project depends largely if not entirely upon it. This paper describes an unusual method of driving a water-supply tunnel through rock carrying water under pressures and conditions that did not permit the use of ordinary tunneling methods. THE DELAWARE AQUEDUCT The new Delaware aqueduct is a Manhattan project of some magnitude; when completed, it will contain what probably will be, for some time to come, the longest tunnel in the world. Various features in its construction are currently described in the trade journals of the construction industry, and informative engineering details are given in the Delaware Water Supply News, published twice a month by the Board of Water Supply of the City of New York. Work was begun on this project on March 24, 1937. The tunnel will convey water from reservoirs at the headwaters of the Delaware River to the City of New York.

Hofman and Hayward in their experiments, proving that a low percentage of copper sulphate with a variable percentage of salt, depending on the ore, gives the best results, confirm practical mill-work which I did in 1895. I have none of my notes, taken at the time, to refer to, so have to rely solely on memory, which precludes the conciseness that is alway desirable. In 1894 I took charge of the plant of the San Rafael Company, near Chinipas, Chihuahua, Mex., which at that time was treating a very refractory ore carrying about $15 in gold and from 20 to 25 oz. of silver per ton, the bullion being about 300 fine in gold. The silver in the ore was in the form of a sulphide. Although carrying an average of 0.75 oz. of gold per ton, free gold could rarely be seen by panning, but upon roasting a sample of the ore the gold became visible at once—a result which was discovered by chance and used to advantage later. In order to utilize the old mill to the best advantage, it was decided to use pan-amalgamation after roasting. The roasting, done in a lime-kiln, was similar to the ordinary " burning " operation. The roasted ore was trammed to the mill-bins and crushed by 10 stamps to pass a 30-mesh screen. The pulp was de-watered and fed to four 1-ton pans. My recollection is that upon starting the mill-work, the charge contained 1.5 lb. of copper sulphate and 5 per cent. of salt per ton. From the start the extraction was unsatisfactory and the loss of quicksilver was very large. Experiments were then carried out on a working scale. If we are lucky," says Hollis M. Dole, Assistant Secretary of the Interior, "coal, uranium and hydropower will provide us with maybe a third of the energy we require in 1985. The other two- thirds will have to be made available in liquid and gaseous form." Luck, however, may have run out, for if the facts and figures relating to supply and demand of natural gas over the next 20 years prove accurate, the United States may fall short in its attempts to bring the energy crisis under control. By the year 1990 the world will need to consume a minimum 150 quadrillion Btu of energy with gas requirements running as high as 42-43 trillion cu ft. By 1990, the U.S. alone will require 45-46 trillion cu ft. To meet anticipated demand, this country will have to overcome a deficiency of about 20 trillion cu ft since, by all pragmatic estimates, it will produce only 15-20 trillion cu ft of gas. The importation of natural gas into the U.S. will help but will not solve the problem. Adequate gas supplies will have to be supplied domestically. The Arctic, with its predicted huge reserves of gas, combined with imports of liquid natural gas (LNG) may provide as much as 15% of the 45-46 trillion figure, however, such reserves will not come into play as quickly as originally thought. The Alaskan gas fields, for instance, will provide a substantial supplement to domestic gas needs, but only after 1976.

X-ray analysis and single-crystal study have been utilized in recent years as a new means of following constitutional changes in alloys. If such transformations can be suppressed by rapid cooling, they can be followed at room temperature in a particularly convenient manner. In the following we shall consider changes in solubility and polymorphic transformations with particular reference to phenomena of the age-hardening type. Finally a thermodynamic viewpoint is developed for examining such transformations. Changes in Solubility 1. Determinations of solubility limits in the solid state which show decreasing solubility with falling temperature are made as follows: A series of alloys extending into the heterogeneous region is prepared and quenched fromas high a temperature as possible, whereupon their lattice parameters are determined. Then one or more alloys are quenched from temperatures at which they are heterogeneous and their lattice parameters likwwise determined. For the purpose of determining the parameter the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 has been very useful for it produces sharp films in a short time which can be accurately read. High-order reflections (interferences) from the object are recorded on a film which is placed exactly perpendicular to the X-ray beam. The specimen usually has the shape of a small round bar.l Fig. 2 shows a selection of such exposures of silver-rich Cu-Ag alloys, and Fig. 3 gives the measurements made from these films. Fig. 4 gives the solubility curve which results.2 This curve is shifted to lower concentrations than the curve that is obtained from metallographic or physical methods. The performance of a well in a bounded, layered reservoir with interlayer crossflow has been investigated mathematically. The system studied comprises a centrally located well in a bounded cylindrical reservoir composed of two layers of contrasting physical properties. The reservoir contains a single fluid of small and constant compressibility. In the case of a well producing at constant pressure, the production rate of the crossflow system declines exponentially after the early transient behavior dies out. For wells which produce with constant rate, the pressure-time relationship is linear following the transient. For very early production time, the production rate of the two-layer crossflow system behaves as that of the two-layer stratified system (the case in which the layers are in communication at the well only). Except for early time, in most practical cases the performance of a two-layer reservoir with cross-flow can be duplicated by that of a single-layer reservoir. The equivalent single-layer reservoir must have the same pore volume and the same drainage and wellbore radii as in the two-layer case. In addition, the equivalent reservoir must have a "kh" (permeability x thickness) product equal to the sum of the "kh" products of the respective layers in the crossflow system. If the porosity and permeability distributions are known, the production and pressure behavior of a well with and without crossflow can be predicted. From a comparison of the observed pressure or production performance of a well and the theoretical behavior, the occurrence of interlayer crossflow can be detected. INTRODUCTION When flow is possible across the bedding plane from a low-permeability layer into an adjacent layer of moderate or high permeability, the earlier depletion of the more permeable layer will cause such flow to occur. If this situation exists, the oil recovery from tight layers can be appreciable; thus, the economic ramifications of interlayer crossflow are apparent. The possible importance and extent of flow between adjacent and connected layers — whether resulting from capillary, gravitational, or viscous forces — have been the subject of considerable speculation for many years. Jacquard1 presented a rigorous analysis of the crossflow due to single-fluid expansion occurring between two adjacent and connected layers when the well produces at constant rate. His presentation was entirely mathematical, however, and no numerical results from evaluation of the mathematical solutions were presented. Our objectives in the preparation and presentation of the present paper are essentially twofold— (1) to analyze the behavior of a well which produces a single compressible fluid from a bounded, layered reservoir with interlayer crossflow, and (2) to present practical numerical results and simplified formulas to facilitate engineering analysis of reservoirs with crossflow. The constant-terminal-pressure case was analyzed rigorously, whereas the constant-terminal-rate case was treated only for semisteady-state conditions. DESCRIPTION OF THE IDEALIZED TWO-LAYER RESERVOIR The reservoir to be studied is assumed to be bounded and cylindrical in shape, with a completely penetrating well at its center. The reservoir is composed of two adjacent horizontal layers between which fluid is free to flow. Each layer is assumed to be homogeneous, isotropic and completely filled with a fluid of small and constant compressibility. The total thickness of the reservoir is small enough

AgInTe2, CuInTe2, and all Proportions of CuxAg1-xInTe, forMed homogeneous single phase alloys after direct solidification from the nielt. X-ray analysis indicated a zinc-blel~de strzccture typical of the chalcopyrite compounds, and the electrical resistivity and Sccbeck coefficient values were in the semiconducting range. AuInTe, and AuxA4g,-, InTe, formed by what appeared to be a peritectic reaction (the thermal analysis curves showing more than one arrest) and were conseyue~ztly polyphase. Substitution of copper into AgIrzTe, resulted in a continuous transition in the room tenzperature Seebeck coefficient from the negative AgIzTe, to the positive CuInTe,. A zero coefficient was obtained at about Cuo.55 Ago.45 InTe, . The temperatzire variation was similar to that observed for the stoichiometric compounds, that zs, tendency towards "p" concEuction at elevated temperatures. The thernzoelectric figure of merit for the compo~uzds, as determined by the Putley -Harmnn method were in the range 10- to 10-7 "K-l; the thermal conductivities in the order of 0.15 cal per sec-cm-oK. INCREASED interest in semiconducting intermetallic substances is expanding much of recent research from simple binary compounds into polyatomic systems and solid solutions. Ternary compounds A' represent a covalent extension of the binary semiconductors Within the a tin isoelec-tronic series, Ag-Cd-In-Sn-Sb-Te-I, divalent cadmium atoms in CdTe are being substituted for by monovalent silver and trivalent indium atoms to form the compound AgInTe, . By cross-substitution with elements of other isoelectronic series, a great number of ternary compounds A 'B"'c? is possible. In all of them, however, a necessary though not sufficient condition for the covalent, semiconducting bond—that there be four sharing orbital electrons per atom—must be fulfilled. In AgInTe,, each silver or indium atom is tetrahedrally surrounded by four tellurium atoms, while each tellurium atom is co-valently bound to two silver and two indium atoms. Synthetic chalcopyrites A'B"'c~ were first recognized as potential semiconduct&rs by Goodman and Douglas.' Austin, Goodman, and Pengelly discuss preparation difficulties and some electronic measurements on AgInS, , AgInSe, CuInSe, , AgInTe, , and CuInTe,. Chalcopyrites A B c2v are mentioned in papers attempting to classify and predict semiconducting behavior of intermetallic compounds; on the basis of saturated tetrahedral sp3 bonds,3 by specific selection criteria,' and by crystallographic considerations."
