Oscar Johnson—In my opinion, the effect of mill speeds on grinding costs must be studied along with capital investment and dollars gathered together as profits. Comparing the entire groups of operators with those who have had the opportunity to make slow-speed mill studies, I think you will find the latter small in numbers. Most managers want the equipment worked to its maximum output. There are, however, some installations where plant and mill sizes are such that they can do the job with reduction of mill barrel speeds. The past and the present installations of the industry are laid out to get the most capacity for the least capital outlay. This is the case even with the plants of Chile Exploration, International Nickel, Morocco, and Anaconda, now under construction or being changed. The industry recognizes that most all equipment it buys today is good and can be depended upon for efficient performance. Under this scheme of things, I am doubtful that slow-speed ball mill operation will be generally applicable. With reference to the U. S. Bureau of Mines laboratory tests, I think table II could have been omitted. It is inconclusive as to maximum efficiency for the low-pulp level mill on hard ore. There should be no question about this point. However, data on mill speeds can be found to substantiate various theories as well as refute them. Gow, Guggenheim, Campbell and Coghill, in their paper on Ball Milling,' believe their 2 x 2 ft laboratory mill reflects results that can be expected from large mills. If so, then referring to their table 11, they state, "The conclusion to be drawn from this second series is that high speed, not exceeding 72 pct of the critical, favors capacity, as before, but that with proper conditions of operation high speeds may give as good efficiency values as low speeds. In this case the efficiency values are nearly constant. A horizontal curve would indicate that the amount of grinding was directly proportional to the power expended, and these tests suggest that such a coildition can be made to exist in commercial operations." But, one must realize that there are many variables that effect the efficiency of grinding mill operation, and too much must not be assumed as to the effect of some specific change. Possibly with changes in mill speed, the results might be more consistent by also a change in ball rationing, type of ball, volume of ball charge,. p.ulp level and amount of pulp in the mill, pulp consisting, design of liner, circulating load, etc. Also, changes in ore character must be reckoned with when evaluating grinding performance. At present the Climax Molybdenum Corp. is running at much reduced capacity. Mr. James Duggan informs me that at mill speeds of 17 rpm, they save a $0.025 per ton on liners and $0.025 per ton in power, but, if the demand for molybdenum increased, he would go back to higher speed to obtain maximum tonnage, as the values from the increased tonnage would far more than offset the one half saving at the slower speed. The Jnspiration ran a six months' test between mills running 21 rpm and 23.5 rpm. The slower mills ground 10 pct less ore with a slight saving per ton, but when the reduced plant tonnage was checked back into the actual cost figures of concentration, the high-speed mills with their greater tonnage showed considerable advantage. To be convinced of possible practical results from the predictions in the conclusions, I think we would have to rely on the analysis of expert cost accountants to furnish the necessary proof figures. Hardinge and Ferguson are to be commended for the work in preparing this paper. I am convinced that our Massco engineers should go into higher speeds with our equipment. Harlowe Hardinge (authors' reply)—For one, I heartily agree with Mr. Johnson's opening statement that the effect of mill speeds on grinding costs must be studied along with capital investment and dollars gathered together as profits. It was on this basis and for this reason the paper was written. Mr. Johnson, on the other hand, takes the position that, on the whole, low speeds are not justified from the economic standpoint, basing his principal reason on the fact that lower mill speeds cut mill capacities and hence reduce the gross income from the product produced. There is no denying this point. It is almost axiomatic. It is for this very reason that the overall advantage of lower mill speeds has been discounted and even overlooked. It was for this reason mainly that the paper was written in the first place. It is one thing to plan an efficient operation at the outset, basing one's figures on the tonnage requirements at the time, and it is quite another to be confronted with the problem of increasing the output of an existing installation at a minimum of capital expenditure. Economic consideration of a new installation is greatly influenced by referring to an old one. Too often, the analyst assumes that if this practice is followed in the new installation, one would not go wrong. It is just here that he may be wrong. Past practice and low capital expenditure are all too frequently given priority over the engineer's analysis of operating costs. When we are able to start fresh, we should give proper weight to other economic factors which do not exist in an old installation. It is these economic factors that make it possible to spend at the outset just a little more money and get it back in a matter of months and effect big savings for years to come. F. C. Bond—This paper is of considerable importance in that it emphasizes a modern trend to operate ball mills at somewhat slower speeds than formerly. Aim of Rock-Crushing Experiments THE aim of the laboratory experiments described in this paper was twofold: 1. To measure as accurately, as possible the maximum amount of crushing that can be effected by 1 hp. acting for 24 hr., by the two proposed methods for measuring the amount of crushing, namely: (a) by Rittinger's method; (b) by Stadler's method, based on Kick's law. 2. To show, if possible, that by one of these methods, the amount of crushing produced by 1 hp. in 24 hr. is a constant amount throughout a wide range in the diameter of the piece crushed, and that by the other method, the amount of crushing is a variable quantity over the same range of diameter; or else show that neither of the proposed methods for measuring the amount of crushing indicates a fixed relation between power and crushing and consequently a new method for computing this amount will have to be found to permit the establishment of a law of crushing. Experimental Methods Testing machines, calorimetric methods and commercial. types of rock-crushing machines were considered with reference to their value for measuring power used in crushing. The following electrically driven crushing machines, installed and available in the McGill Ore-dressing Laboratory and which had been used in previous rock-crushing tests, on the whole seemed especially suited to the investigation: (1) Comet "A" crusher; (2) 7 by 9-in. Dodge crusher; (3) 10 by 16-in. rolls. In later tests a 3 ½ -ft. Huntington mill was used.

In recent years in situ leach mining has emerged as a viable technology for the recovery of uranium from strata in South Texas which contain relatively low concentrations of uranium ore. Because the ore bodies lie within ground-water aquifers, a significant determinant in the economics is the requirement that such aquifers be protected from contamination. Since ammonia is one of the constituents of the leach solutions now being field tested, one environmental problem to be resolved is the removal of ammonia at the end of mining. A second related question is the fate of the ammonia which is not removed by the restoration procedure. This paper considers the displacement and migration of ammonium in a flowing electrolyte with concomitant ion exchange. The ion exchange is an important feature since, during the solution mining phase, ammonium saturates the mineral exchange sites and must be removed from these sites. A mathematical model is used to simulate this process and the model is tested against the results of laborator.y experiments. It is found that the simulations are adequate if an appropriate selection of parameters is made. The model is then used to investigate the effect of cation composition and concentration of the restoration medium as well as dispersion on the overall effectiveness of the process. It is concluded that increasing the concentration of monovalent ions in a solution containing a mixture of both monovalent and divalent ions decreases the adsorption selectivity of the divalent ions with respect to all monovalent ions including ammonium. Thus increasing the ionic concentration of a restoration fluid by increasing the concentration of a nonselectively adsorbed (with respect to ammonium) ion may have a very limited benefit.

IT is twenty years since the writer made his first molybdenum steels and others were making them commercially five years earlier but the prevailing opinion seems to be that molybdenum steels are new; from time to time the daily press speaks of important discoveries in Europe and intimates that American steel makers have much to learn in regard to alloy steels. The earlier experiments were largely confined to the use of relatively high percentages of molybdenum in tool steels and permanent magnet steels. Recent developments deal with the types of alloy structural steels used for airplane, automobile, and other engineering requirements; in these, the molybdenum content is usually less than 1 per cent. The earlier types generally have been unsuccessful commercially, but the newer types of steels are becoming of increasing importance. The war showed our dependence on foreign sources for alloying metals; molybdenum alone is widely distributed in the United States and seemingly abundant. Many deposits are not now of commercial interest, owing to location and relatively small amount of ore available, but other deposits are being developed and a stable source of supply seems well assured. In tool and magnet steels, it was early found that 1 part of molybdenum was equivalent to from 2 to 2.5 parts of tungsten. The permanent magnet steels investigated by Madame Curie,1 in 1898, contained from 3.36 to 4.05 per cent. molybdenum; in 1902, Dr. E. L. French and the writer thoroughly tested steels containing from 2:0 to 4.0 per cent. These steels gave satisfactory tests for permanence, but were low in residual density and much more sensitive to hardening than the corresponding tungsten products. We discontinued work with them, therefore, and have no advice that such steels have been used commercially here or abroad.

Data are presented which show that fractions of varying densities from the same coals are oxidized at different rates by nitric acid. From oxidation data, the approximate quantity of "bright" and "dull" components may be calculated. Definite relationships between oxidation rate and rank are shown for density fractions from at least two bituminous coals. IN 1945, the Alabama State Mine Experiment Station initiated a program on the determination of fusain in certain coals of the state.1 Because of the lack of equipment and personnel necessary for microscopic examination, the chemical method2 was used exclusively. During studies of the distribution of fusain in fractions of various sizes and densities on a medium volatile coal, the author noted a higher rate of oxidation of the nonfusain part of the coal in the lower density fractions and the difference in rate became more marked the shorter the oxidation period used. Since durain and other "dull" components of coal have been reported3,4,5 to have higher densities than vitrain and the bright components, it appeared probable that the observed differences in rates of oxidation in the different density fractions were due to variations in petro-graphic composition. Such effects have been noticed by other workers.2,3 In order to obtain further evidence on this point, several Alabama coals of different rank have been separated into three or more fractions on the basis of density and their rates of oxidation determined, using the procedure specified for the determination of fusain, except that measurements were made at short time intervals as well as for the longer periods specified in the regular procedure. Significant differences in the rates of oxidation of the nonfusain part of the various fractions have been observed, and it is believed that studies of this type may make possible the identification of individual petrographic components or lead to methods for their semiquan-titative estimation. Properties of the Coals: Analyses and some properties of the whole coals studied are given in table I. The range in rank of the coals is not the widest possible within the state, but samples of the low volatile coals that occur in thin beds in the northeastern part of the state, were unavailable. The Clements bed is not, at present, considered workable. The coal is of medium volatile rank, quite friable, and very strongly swelling. Analyses of different size fractions show that the larger sizes are of higher rank than the smaller ones. Material passing the No. 50 sieve (all sieve sizes refer to the U. S. Standard Series) is close to high volatile A in rank, except for the size passing a No. 200 sieve, in which fusain is partially concentrated. Because of the variation in rank of the sizes of Clements coal, oxidation studies were made of two widely different size ranges. The + 1-in. material was crushed on rolls to about 1/8 in. and separated into five fractions by float-and-sink treatment in a benzene-carbon tetrachloride mixture. The — No. 4 + No. 8 and the — No. 4 + No. 50 size ranges tested overlap but the latter size was studied last with the expectation that it would include more oxidizable material than the first size. This proved not to be the case. Yields and properties of the specific gravity fractions oxidized are shown in table II. Milldale bed coal probably represents, as nearly as it is possible to do so, the "average" coal of the state. The material passing a No. 4 sieve was the only size range oxidized. Eight years ago the Hecla mine, a lead-silver producer, situated at Burke, Idaho, was producing ore from but two levels, the 300- and the 600-ft. All hoisting was done with a 12- by 16-in. slide-valve, double-reel, hoist. The hoist was being worked to its capacity and was unsuitable for hoisting from greater depths. As the work of opening a new level was about to be started, it became necessary to remodel the then-existing equipment or install a new hoist. The recent advent of electricity from Spokane had made available a cheaper power than steam. By a series of tests conducted throughout the Cæaur d'A1ene district, it was found that it cost $109 per year to generate a horse-power with steam. Electric power was to be had for $50 a horse-power per year. It was decided to substitute for the engines a motor-drive, of sufficient capacity to operate from the 900-ft. level, and ultimately install an entirely new hoist. After disconnecting the engines, installing a new shaft, and making a few minor changes, a 300-h-p., 2,300-volt, 514-rev. per min., variable-speed motor of the induction type was geared to the reel-shaft. The reels were supplied with 3/8- by 4-in. flat rope, and the duty of the hoist was about as follows: Cage, 1,700; ore, 2,600; car, 1,400; rope, 2,250; total, 7,950 pounds. The Bristol ammeter chart, Fig. 1, shows the combined current-consumption of the hoist- and mine-motors. The large intermittent load is clearly shown; this produced harmful fluctuations in the voltage of the long, lightly-loaded, 60,000-volt transmission-line from Spokane to the Cæmur d'A1enes. The power company received no compensation for the increased cost of producing power for this intermittent or fluctuating load. In order to protect its system from similar excessive

This paper represents the results of a study to determine the source, mode of occurrence and conditions influencing the flow and liberation of large volumes of inflammable gas in the Pocahontas No. 4 coal bed in southern West Virginia. A study of this kind is of interest in connection with mine ventilation, because in the removal of gases from coal mines it is very important to know the origin, the occurrence and laws of gas flow. The study was started in April, 1931, and the data and observations were obtained throughout a period of 15 months of field work. Geology The country where this study was made is mountainous and rugged; great cliffs, precipitous slopes and deep narrow gorges are found throughout the area. The outcropping rocks consist of stratified layers of sandstone, shale, limestone and deposits of coal of Carboniferous age. The Pottsville series of the Pennsylvanian, lying at the base of this period, cover the greater portion of the area. A stratigraphic section of the Pocahontas group of the Pottsville series is shown in Fig. 3. The older rocks outcrop in the extreme southeastern part of the area, but are under drainage in the central and northern parts due to the gradual northwest dip of the strata. The structure has a general northeast-southwest trend (Fig. 1). North of Dry Fork anticline the strata have been only slightly disturbed by movements of the earth's crust; it is now a long monocline. Southeast1 of Dry Fork anticline the strata are warped into great arches and deep troughs and are broken by overthrust faults. All of this folding is probably the result of the intense folding associated with the formation of the Appalachian Mountains. The idea of economical production is usually associated with large operations, tonnages, and mines, with even larger capital behind them. , Nevertheless many small mines operate in the shadow of large competitors and make a good showing on the capital invested despite larger overhead expenses. For the purpose of this discussion I will divide the cost of production into classes, and specify opposite each the approximate percentagc expended thereon: 1. Labor, including miners and company men; 60 to 75 per cent. 2. Development, including all necessary .yardage, room turning, crosscuts, etc.; 7 to 12 per cent. 3. Deadwork, covering payment to miners for handling falls, draw-slate, or faults, rock work, water, and in general, all nonproductive labor; 3 to 7 per cent. 4. Supplies: mine timbers, oil, brattice material, lumber, cement, and repairs to equipment; 2 to 6 per cent. 5. Expense: management, selling, office, taxes, etc.; 1 to 5 per cent. 6. Depreciation of coal reserves and royalties; 6 to 10 per cent. 7. Depreciation of equipment and interest on capital invested; 1 to 3 per cent. 8. Fuel; ½ to 1½ per cent. The labor cost for a small mine is relatively much lower than for a large mine, particularly the sum paid to company men. Idle-pay expense is cut to a minimum; the labor item being larger than all the others together, a saving in labor makes a decided showing on the total cost. The development charges in small and large mines are about the same. There should be a small showing on the deadwork item in favor of the small mine. The unit cost for supplies is usually small in the small mine. The operator of the small mine finds, owing to a limited tonnage, that the expenses of management, selling, etc., are abnormally high. In an earlier paper1 we discussed a simple, rapid method of taking samples of liquid steel and analyzing them for oxygen, which, though possibly not absolutely accurate (as is likewise true of all other methods), certainly yields results that are satisfactorily consistent. Accordingly, samples from hundreds of heats ill different shops were analyzed for oxygen, with results sufficient in number to be handled statistically and permit estimation of some general trends. Measurements were made in acid as well as in basic open hearths, throughout the refining period, to learn how stirring, blocking, adding ore or lime or sand, affects the oxygen content of the bath; we also followed the changes brought about by tapping, teeming, and deoxidizing. Some of these results, discussed in an earlier paper,2 bring out the dominant role of the carbon-oxygen reaction in regulating degree of oxidation both of metal and of slag, also the marked variability of concentration of dissolved oxygen [0] in excess of that which would be in equilibrium with carbon and with carbon monoxide at a partial pressure of one atmosphere. As a logical beginning on this complex problem, we take up in the present paper the variability of this excess oxygen, A[O], when other factors are as constant as they ever are in open-hearth operation; namely, toward the end of the refining period, when the bath may be regarded as in the comparatively steady state it approaches in absence of disturbing factors. This condition was chosen because by that time the significant reactions, except carbon oxidation, between slag and metal have come to substantial equilibrium; this facilitates interpretation of the complex situation and thus perinits more definite conclusions to be drawn. This excess concentration of oxygen, A[O], in the metal is needed, of course, to make the steelmaking process go at a reasonable rate; alternatively it may be regarded as a measure of the virtual pressure increment above one atmosphere, or of the degree of supersaturation, of carbon monoxide in the metal. According to our measurements, the excess concentration A[0] in liquid steel varies from about 0.009 to 0,035 per cent oxygen by weight. It is quite sensitive to change of conditions, being altered temporarily by operations such as stirring with green poles, additions of ore, lime, or sand; but as the disturbance works itself out, it resumes a level within the intermediate range characteristic of the steady state. During the past year, the Watertown Arsenal has been interested in the occluded gas and oxide content of certain ordnance steels in order to determine, if possible, whether some of the peculiar failures in their physical properties might not be traced to these causes. For the purpose of best accomplishing a study of this nature, it was decided to heat the various samples of steel in a vacuum for definite periods of time at high temperatures and carefully examine the quantity and composition of the gases evolved. By the use of a fused quartz tube fitted with a water-cooled, ground-glass stopper, it was possible to maintain a vacuum at a temperature of 1000" C. for 10 hr. without perceptible leakage being evidenced as measured by a McLeod gage. During the past year, the Watertown Arsenal has been interested in the occluded gas and oxide content of certain ordnance steels in order to determine, if possible, whether some of the peculiar failures in their physical properties might not be traced to these causes. For the purpose of best accomplishing a study of this nature, it was decided to heat the various samples of steel in a vacuum for definite periods of time at high temperatures and carefully examine the quantity and composition of the gases evolved. By the use of a fused quartz tube fitted with a water-cooled, ground-glass stopper, it was possible to maintain a vacuum at a temperature of 1000" C. for 10 hr. without perceptible leakage being evidenced as measured by a McLeod gage. WHEN impure Zn (< 99.99 pct)&apos;&apos;Z or Zn-Cd alloys3 are progressively solidified, a cell or "corrugation" substructure4 is produced in the solid, with a high impurity or solute concentration along the cell walls. When these materials are polished and suitably etched, etch pits are often observed along the cell walls. For the Zn-Cd alloys these etch pits have been associated with decorated dislocations, present in the corrugation boundaries to accommodate the lattice strain. In the course of an investigation of Zn-2 pct Au alloy, molten metal of this alloy was poured into cold water and the resultant solid pieces were sectioned, polished and etched with a Cr0 ethant. An extremely regular cell pattern was observed on the etched surface, similar in general to the corrugation structure previously reported for impure zinc and Zn-Cd alloys. At higher magnification, regularly spaced pits were observed along the cell boundaries. An example of the regular cell pattern at the center of a specimen is shown in the center and lower portions of Fig. 1; the top of the figure shows the pattern near the specimen surface. Typical etch pits in the cell walls are shown in Fig. 2. It was surprising that a cell pattern as regular as that shown in the center of Fig. 1 was produced at the very rapid solidification rates used (estimated as > 1 cm per sec). The first attempts at direct utilization of blast-furnace gas in engines were made in 1895. For a considerable time the gas had been burnt in Cowper stoves for heating the blast for the furnace, and under the boilers which supplied steam to the blowing-engines, and others serving the furnaces. It was natural, therefore, that the idea of directly employing it in gas-engines should have occurred simultaneously to several engineers, notably to Lurmann and to Lencauchez, who had pointed out the blast-furnace as a powerful gas-producer. Nevertheless, nowhere had any attempt been made to apply it to this purpose up to the end of 1894, when Thwaite proposed it to Mr. James Riley, of the Glasgom Iron & Steel Company. About the same time investigations were being made in Belgium and in Germany, independently of Thwaite&apos;s experiments, which were not generally known on the Continent. The industrial world, which up to that time had hardly favored the idea, had thus been gradually prepared to receive it. The gas-engine, long restricted to small sizes and dependent upon the use of an expensive fuel obtainable only in large centers, now began to make headway. At the Paris Exhibition of 1889 two engines of 100 h.p. were shown and excited much interest among engineers. One had four cylinders, and was made at the celebrated works of the Deutz Company, and the other was a single-cylinder engine, exhibited by two French designers, Messrs. A unique feature of the recently dedicated pelletizing complex of Hamersley Iron Pty. Ltd. is the dry grinding circuit for the iron ore fines. This facility, located at Dampier, some 800 miles north of Perth, Western Australia, has a rated annual capacity of 2 million tpy of iron ore pellets. The Mt. Tom Price orebody, which supplies the pelletizing plant, is a massive deposit of high-grade hematite containing an estimated 500 million tons of ore averaging 64% iron. The main impurities are ferruginous shales that occur in bands of varying widths in the orebody. An average analysis shows 4.4% SiO2, 2.0% A12O3, 0.05% P and 1.8% LOI.

The titanium-rich portion of the Ti-Pd system was investigated from 0 to 75 wt pct Pd by metallo-graphic and X-ray techniques. A 0 eutectoid occurs at 24 wt pct Pd and 1190°F. Two compoutzds are indicated in the region below 75 wt pct Pd, Ti,Pd and Ti2Pd3. The solubility of palladium its a titanium is low, probably less than 1 pct. In 1960 Rudnitskii and Birunl published a complete version of the Ti-Pd phase diagram. However, their work was in disagreement with the earlier literature in that they reported only one inter metallic compound, whereas three had been reported earlier. In view of these discrepancies, it was therefore necessary to redetermine those portions of the diagram of immediate interest. The following account describes our work on the system over the range of 0 to 75 wt pct Pd. MATERIALS AND METHODS Distilled titanium sponge and elemental palladium were used in the formulation of the alloys; the chemistry of these materials is detailed in Table I. The alloys were prepared as 10 to 50 g blended compacts that were melted into buttons by arc melting under gettered argon on a water-cooled copper hearth. Weighing of the ingredients before and after melting showed that negligible weight changes occurred. Therefore, no analyses were undertaken and the compositions of all alloys are nominal. All alloys were fabricated by hot rolling at 1700°F to 0.070-in.-thick sheet. Scale was removed by sandblasting and pickling in a 5 pct HF-35 pct HNO,, balance H20 solution. For metallographic examination, specimens were mounted after heat treatment transverse to the rolling direction, ground on silicon carbide papers of increasing fineness to 600 grit, and then electro-polished using a solution containing 600 ml me-thanol, 60 ml perchloric acid, 360 ml butyl cello-solve, and 2 ml "Solvent X". Unless otherwise specified, etching of alloys containing up to 42 pct Pd was carried out by swabbing with a 12 pct HN03-1 pct HF aqueous etch where a bright etch was required, or by a 1 pct hydrofluoric in saturated oxalic acid solution where contrast between phases was required. The Ti-52.8 Pd alloy was etched with a solution of 25 ml HF, 40 ml glycerine, 35 ml methanol, and 18 g benzalkonium chloride. For X-ray examination, 1/2-in.-square speci- mens of sheet were mounted flat in a standard 1-in. metallographic mount and ground and polished as above. X-ray diffraction was performed using a Norelco type 12045 Diffractometer, employing CuKa radiation with a nickel filter at 40 kv and 20 ma. Specimens were rotated about the sheet normal during exposure. Although this procedure did not remove the effects of sheet texture from the relative intensities, it had the advantage that oxidation or contaminants entering during preparation of powder samples could not confuse the patterns obtained. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Fig. 1 illustrates the Ti-Pd phase diagram according to Rudnitskii and Birunl with the work of the present authors superimposed. Both interpretations agree that the system is of the 0 -eutectoid type with an extensive 0-phase field, and that the eutectoid temperature is just below 1200°F. There is also agreement that the solubility of palladium in a titanium is restricted. Our work would indicate that the a solubility of palladium is low, probably less than 1 pct. However, whereas Rudnitskii and Birunl place the eutectoid composition at 41 wt pct Pd, this investigation shows it to be at about 24 wt pct Pd. Moreover, this investigation confirms the existence of compounds at Ti2Pd and Ti2Pd3, whereas Rudnitskii and Birun report only a single Berthol-lide phase covering the TiPd to TiPd, range. Laves et a1.&apos; and Wallbaum, whose work was summarized by Maykuth , reported the existence of Ti2Pd3 and TiPd, in addition to Ti2Pd. Ten years ago: October, 1914, the author had the privilege of giving an illustrated address on investigations of coal-dust explosions1 to this Institute at one session of its fall meeting in Pittsburgh, Pa,. On the following day, the members had the opportunity of seeing a large-scale explosion test at the Experimental Mine near Bruceton, in which the explosion was made to follow a predetermined path by means of rock-dust barriers of various types, which had prevented the explosive waves from reaching the outlets of the mine by the shortest paths.2 There was also shown a ((home-made" rock-dusting machine discharging the dust from a flexible nozzle, and a cement gun operated for the quick erection of a fire or ventilation stopping, such as might be put up after an explosion. Following that paper, there was presented a paper by J. Taffanel, Director of the Lìévin testing station in the Pas de Calais, which reviewed the French coal-dust investigations.3 A paper4 by Howard N. Eavenson contains lists of explosions that occurred in North America and Great Britain, from early in the 19th century to 1912; in France to 1903, and Belgium to 1909. Although explosions still occur, we are hopeful that we have entered a happier freedom from these visitations, as the result of increased knowledge of the causes and means of prevention. Looking back over coal-dust investigations, there appear to have been periods of advance and of stagnation. Coal-dust Investigations From the earliest times of coal mining, which chiefly affected Great Britain as the first nation to take up coal mining on a large scale, to the beginning of the 19th century, no one thought of coal dust as an explosive agency; firedamp was the cause dreaded. GAYLER, Teddington, England (written discussion).-At the National Physical Laboratory, the writers have made a number of researches on the relation between the constitution and mechanical properties of aluminum alloys of various types; the results obtained were in good general agreement with those of the authors. The writers, however, did not think that increasing the copper content of sand-cast low-copper duralumin to 4 per cent. necessarily caused a drop in the elongation to 1.5 per cent., as stated on page 9. In the case of sand-cast copper-aluminium alloys they had obtained much greater elongation, in some cases as great as 13 per cent. in heat-treated castings. For example, in a sand casting containing 3.5 per cent. of copper, a strength of 12 tons per square inch and an elongation of 13 per cent. were obtained; in a casting containing 4.5 per cent. copper, a tensile strength of 13 tons, and an elongation of 9 per cent. were obtained. These values were the maximum; the elongation varied considerably, being as low as 5 per cent. in some cases. In the writers&apos; opinion, such variations are due more to unsoundness in the sand casting than to any other cause.

In speaking of the economic geology of southeastern Ontario, W. G. Miller and C. W. Knight1 say that "there occurs in southeastern Ontario a variety of minerals and rocks of economic value, probably as great as in any district of like size on the North American continent. Some of these deposits, including marble and trap, are inexhaustible. Others, including talc and iron pyrites, have proved to be of considerable economic importance. From time to time, during the last 50 years, the following minerals and rocks have been mined or quarried with varying success: gold, iron pyrites, zinc blende, copper pyrites, galena, mispickel, magnetite, hematite, talc, actinolite, mica, marble, ophicalcite, feldspar, fluorite, apatite, corundum, graphite and sodalite. All of the economic materials, with, the exception of fluorite, appear to be of pre-Cambrian age. The fluorite veins penetrate the Ordovician, Black River, limestone." Accompanying that report was an article by the writer on the Queens-boro Pyrite Area which includes one of the two working pyrite properties in southeastern Ontario. In the present paper will be given a brief description2 of all the known pyrite deposits in the area which may at some time possess an economic value, with fuller descriptions of the two working mines—The Canadian Sulphur Ore C,o.&apos;s mine near Queensboro, and the Nichols Chemical Co.&apos;s property at Sulphide. The earliest mining of iron pyrites in Ontario was done in 1868 on the Billings property near Brockville. The mines were closed down in 1879 under the assumption that they were exhausted. Many other
