Victor G. Hills, Cripple Creek, Colo. (communication to the Secretary): In continuation of the subject of the perform ance of "baby machine-drills," presented by Mr. Thane, I sub mit the following records of work done with these drills in the Cripple Creek district of Colorado. Two years ago, the Anchoria-Leland mine began to use baby drills ; and, to make the experiment more complete, began by purchasing two machines, of the same size, but of different make. The little drills were first used for stoping and up raising, in which they achieved at once an unqualified success. Soon after, they began to be used for the smaller branch-drifts and prospecting cross-cuts, while the large two-man drills were still used for the main drifts. Now they have almost entirely superseded the large drills, since it has been found that they will do any ordinary work in the mine at less cost, both for labor and for powder, per ton of rock broken. The large drills, of course, make more rapid progress; but it is only where time is a specially important factor that they are now used. The Portland mine, where, until within a year, only the large machines were used, is now using some small drills for stoping, and also for drifting. Mr. Thane speaks of having two men to operate a baby-drill; but in this district the baby-machine is always worked by one man without help. Again, in Prof. Christy's postscript, the quoted extract from a letter of Mr. L. T. Seymour, the South African engineer, mentions a " 2 1/2-inch Little Giant," as though that were the smallest machine used in that region. These statements leave some doubt as to just what Mr. Thane means by a " baby-drill." To avoid any such uncertainty as to the present communication, I will say that the large or two-man drill in common use at Cripple Creek has a 3 1/8-inch cylinder; while a few mines employ a 3-inch, and a few, in running large tunnels, a 3 1/2-inch drill. This report presents the comments of members of the Institute's Sub-committee on Physics of Mine Ventilation on the proposals of a special committee of the Institute of Mining Engineers (London). This report is as follows: THEORY OF MINE VENTILATION Abstract of a report submitted June 16, 1925, to the Council of The Institution of Mining Engineers by a Special Committee Laws of Flow of Aib The law of flow of air in mine galleries is, at present, expressed by two formulas differing slightly in shape but both derived from the original hydraulic formulas of Chezy and others. These formulas are: The Atlcinson Formula.—Pa = KsV2, which in transformation becomes a3 where P = pressure producing flow; K = coefficient of friction; s = surface of the mine galleries; V = velocity of flow; Q = rate of flow; a = area of mine galleries. This formula is especially applicable to mine galleries, but is unwieldy in application, as in many problems we are dealing with changes produced in the same set of airways when K, s, and a are assumed not to change, and the only variables are P and Q. Great uncertainty prevails as to the exact values to be assigned to the coefficient K in different types of airway, as different workers have given widely differing values. This formula assumes: (I) That resistance to flow is independent of the pressure within the gallery. (2) That changes in volume within the limits of pressure ordinarily met with may be neglected. (3) That changes in density and viscosity and mode of flow of the air may be neglected. (4) That the coefficient K is a constant. (5) That P is proportional to the square of the velocity. We cannot find any reliable experimental work leading us to conclude how far these assumptions are justifiable in mining practice. The effects of hydrogen and vacuum shtering treatments on the physical and mechanical properties of arc plasma-sprayed tungsten were inuestigated. Temperatures examined ranged from 3000" to 4000°F in vacuum and 2000" to 3000°F in hydrogen for both single and duplex sintering cycles. Densities of 92 pct of theoretical density were obtained when a long-time hydrogen treatment at 2000°Fpreceded sintering in vacuum at 4000°F for 4 hr. This cycle also produced the highest ualues for modulus of rupture and bend angle. The results of this investigation point out the desirability of using a low-temperature long-time hydrogen treatment prior to a high-temperature vacuum sinter for arc plasma-sprayed tungsten. ADVANCES in the development of arc plasma-generating equipment have provided a high-temperature heat source that makes the fabrication of tungsten shapes possible by a metallizing process. Tungsten in the as-sprayed condition is very brittle. It has a density between 80 and 85 pct of theoretical density, a lamellar structure with elongated pores, and a high interstitial impurity content. To improve these properties, sintering treatments can be applied to the as-sprayed material, similar to those used for the densification of compacted tungsten powder. However, in view of the differences in the density and microstructure of as-sprayed tungsten as compared with compacted tungsten, responses to sintering were expected to be different. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The tungsten powder used in this investigation had a particle size varying from 3 to 13 p with an average diameter of 8p. The impurity level was less than 0.1 pct. The arc plasma spraying was done with an F-40 Thermal Dynamics Corp. plasma jet. Spraying was performed in air and thus required cooling of the substrate by an air blast in order to minimize oxidation. The spraying parameters employed in the fabrication of all specimens are listed below: Power input, kw 12 Arc-gas flow, cfh 95N2 + 5H2 Powder feed rate, g per min 33 Powder carrier gas flow, cfh ION, Spray distance, in. 3 Traverse rate, in. per min 30 Mandrel speed, rpm 100 Nozzle orifice, in. 7/32 These values of the spraying parameters correspond to optimum conditions ascertained in a previous study. Sintering was conducted at 3000°, 3500, and 4000°F in vacuum (< 0.1 Hg), and at 2000 and 3000°F in hydrogen. Duplex sintering treatments investigated are listed in Table I together with the designations that will be used for reference throughout this paper. The samples were fabricated by spraying onto a copper mandrel which was removed prior to sintering. The specimens used for the sintering analyses had the shape of small hollow truncated cones 1 in. high with an inside diameter varying from 0.500 to 0.125 in. and a wall thickness of 1/8 in. Specimens for bend testing were taken from hollow hexagonal prisms 1-1/2 in. high with a 1-in. diam across the flats and a wall thickness of 1/8 in. The bend-test specimens were ground to the dimensions 0.085 by 0.350 by 1-1/2 in. Prior to bend testing 0.0025 in. of stock was removed from each surface by electro-polishing. Density measurements were made by the water-displacement method. In addition, a porosimeter was used to determine the amount of interconnected porosity for representative samples. Strength and ductility were determined from recorded values in transverse bending using a cross head speed of 0.020 in. per min. The load was applied at the midpoint of a 1-in. span. The deflection data reported herein refer only to the plastic portion of the total deflection. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The as-sprayed samples had a density corresponding to 83 pct (l pct) of the theoretical density of tungsten. Fig. 1 shows a representative as-sprayed tungsten structure.

At 500°C (932°F) the range of y&apos; iron nitride is from 5. 77 + 0.03 wt pct N (in coexistence with a iron) to 5.88 * 0.03 wt pct N (in coexistence with E iron nitride). Stoichiometric "Fe,N" (5.900 wt pct N) is near the upper extreme of possible compositiom. The depe-dence of nitrogen activity (expressed as pnh,/Ph,) on nitrogen content is described satisfactorily by a "Langmuir" isotherm: At even the highest nitrogen concentrations, less than 0.18 pct of&apos; the nitrogen atoms present are impositions of disorder. Past investigations1-4 of the Fe-N system have left only details of the thermodynamic behavior of the y&apos; nitride, "Fe,N9&apos;, to be studied. The present investigation was made to establish more precisely than hitherto the limits of composition and the relation between composition and nitrogen activity at 500°C. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The compositions of nitrides in equilibrium with various NH, + Hz mixtures at 500°C were determined from the weights gained by 0.02-in.-thick (4.0 to 4.5 g) strips of purified iron* when the nitrides were formed A description of the gas generation and furnace system has been published.5 Cracking and blistering during conversion of the original solid iron at 550°C injected considerable porosity into the strips without causing their disintegration. The time for complete conversion was significantly lowered by periodically reducing partly nitrided specimens in hydrogen and then reexposing them to the nitriding gas. Gas mixtures producing single-phase were used in the equilibrations at 500°C. Equilibrium was regarded as existing when the specimen weight was not detect-ably affected by further exposure to the same conditions. The gas compositions and nitrogen activities at which y&apos; transformed to a iron (lower activity limit) and to E iron nitride (upper activity limit) were redetermined during the investigation. A specimen was equilibrated in an NH, + Hz mixture at 500°C and then exposed to a s1ightly different gas. When equi- librium had been reestablished the gas was again changed slightly. At each stage of this repeated process, while the specimen was reacting with the gas, the variation of its weight with time was observed. The onset of phase transition was marked by an abrupt change in the amount and rate of weight gain or loss. The specimens were weighed outside the furnace, in air and at room temperature, on a balance with 0.05 mg precision. When it was found that the specimens were oxidizing at a significant rate during the weighing, a series of timed weighings was made with each specimen, starting 1 min after its exposure to air. RESULTS AND ANALYSIS The gain in specimen weight from oxidation during weighing was linear in the logarithm of time between 1 min and about 2 hr, Fig. 1, later becoming linear in the cube root of time. In many engineering structures, the mechanical properties of large volumes of rock must be considered. Typically, such properties are assumed to be the same as those of small laboratory samples, although it is clear that the laboratory samples do not contain the joints, faults, and other natural planes of weakness of the rock mass. A cheap, convenient testing procedure is needed with which the engineer can more accurately assess the strength and elastic properties of natural jointed rock. As a first step in this direction, a test has been developed capable of determining mechanical properties of large samples in their natural undisturbed state. In the present paper, some preliminary experiments on relatively unjointed material are described. Numerous attempts have been made to measure the deformation modulus of rock masses with varying degrees of success. Rocha (1), Grimm (2), and Alexander (3) have placed flat jacks in a slot in the rock and measured the pressure required to deform the slot. Bonnechere (4) has grouted large flat jacks in granite masses and performed similar experiments using a variety of strain measuring techniques. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has conducted radial jacking tests in which a uniform radial stress is applied to the inside of a tunnel of circular cross section and radial deformation is measured by extensometers located at various depths in the tunnel fall. Plate jack tests (Rocha (5), Shannon and Wilson (6)), pressure chamber tests, and cable jacking tests (Zienkiewicz and Stagg (7)) have all been used to determine in-situ deformation modulus. Several bore hole techniques have also been used to measure rock deformation. These include bore hole jacks (Goodman (8)), bore hole dilatometers using expandable membranes (Menard (9)) and bore hole penetrometers. Most of the above tests except the radial jacking test have an unknown stress distribution and require considerable approximation to calculate a deformation modulus. These approximations include the use of elastic theory for solutions of rigid plates, thick-walled cylinders, etc., and determination of values for Poissons

Most previous work on sedimentation of coal 1 and mineral 2-3 suspensions has been conducted in graduated 1-liter glass cylinders of 6-cm diam. With this type of large container it is often difficult to see through the suspension and tedious to perform a large number of tests. Furthermore, the heavy glass walls and the graduation lines of glass cylinders cause internal and stray reflections, respectively. To obviate these difficulties, an Atlab Emulsion Viewer from Arthur H. Thomas Co. was adopted as an alternative apparatus. Equipment: The viewer," shown in Fig. 1, consists of: 1) a stainless steel frame rack holding 21 flat-bottom Nessler tubes or an ungraduated replica 1.64 cm ID and 1.80 cm OD, 2) a movable masked 150-w lumaline lamp behind the tubes, and 3) a scaled glass panel with 100 vertical divisions in front of the tubes. The tubes are snugly held by springs in slots formed by spacer bars, which also serve as shields to eliminate stray light. The lumaline lamp is mounted behind a slit in a movable housing so that it can be positioned behind the suspension to be examined. The lowest or 100-divi-sion line on the front glass plate is leveled with the upper side of the bottom of all tubes. The scaled portion of each tube, roughly 19 cm high and 40 ml in volume, is used to study coal and mineral suspensions. Procedure: The following procedure was used in many tests. A 1.6-gm sample of dry coal was mixed with 16 ml of distilled water in an ordinary test tube and allowed to stand for three days, with occasional shaking to insure thorough wetting of all particles. The slurry was transferred to a Nessler tube and diluted to 32 ml. The pH regulator and flocculating reagent were added, and the slurry was diluted to reach the uppermost or zero-division line. The tube was immediately stoppered and inverted downward and up again ten times during a period of 35 to 40 sec. The lumaline lamp was turned on during the inversion period. After inversion the tube was quickly returned to the viewer rack. The time elapsed for each 10-division drop of the demarcation line between solid and liquid was recorded by stopwatch until the 80-division line was reached in the zone of compression. Additional readings were taken at 15, 30, and 60 min after settling began. The clarity of the supernatent liquid was observed also. As the settling rate became considerably slower at the 75-division line, it was convenient at this time to start the next test in a separate Nessler tube. This was continued until the suspensions in any number of the 21 tubes were tested. An attempt was made to correlate the experimental results between the Nessler tube and a 1-liter glass cylinder. Table I shows that coal particles settle much faster in the cylinder than in the tube, which has a large wall effect.&apos; The correction factor for the tube impedance is 1.662 2 0.145 at the 40-division line in the hindered settling zone, and 1.614 & 0.139 at the 75-division line in the compression zone. This rough correlation was established by dividing the pulp height of each container into 100 divisions and comparing the settling rates of the two containers at the same divisions. Tests were also performed to determine the accuracy of the viewer. The results, not presented, showed that error was within 10 pct.

Alkaline alcohol solutions were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines for improving the desorption rate of gold and silver from metal-laden activated carbon generated in gold processing circuits. Factors affecting the desorption, such as temperature, alcohol content, type of alcohol, and alkalinity, were studied. Nearly complete metal desorption was obtained in 5 to 6 hr at 80º C using a solution containing about 20 vol-pct alcohol and 1 pct sodium hydroxide. Sodium sulfide was shown to be effective for selectively precipitating silver from the carbon strip solutions, thereby providing a means for producing high- purity gold by subsequent electrolysis.

It touches upon the phenomenal growth in the demand for water supply and emphasizes the problems facing the coal industry both with regard to acid mine water drainage discharged from active and abandoned mines and the suspended solids discharged to the stream system from wet coal preparation plants.

THE electrical specific resistance of rocks in the field is measured by sending a current through a medium of great volume, compared to the electrodes, whose resistivity should be measured. The whole resistance can be determined by the Wheatstone bridge and the specific resistance calculated by a well-known formula. The resistivity of some rocks in place in Germany and in Switzerland is given; first, of a rock near the surface, and especially near electrodes. Practical applications are made in the determination: (1) of the continuity of a conducting orebody; (2) of the surface area of an orebody; (3) in the detection of a water-bearing fault in a salt mine. Preliminary observations are described: (1) on the influence of the depth of ground-water table; (2) on the detection of gas under high pressure in coal seams. The observations in this paper of the electrical resistivity of rocks and soil in place are along the lines of the very interesting method and results of the Messrs. Gish, Rooney, Hotchkiss and Fisher.1,2 All the work described has been done since 1920.

Minor industrial minerals included in this chapter are: the alum minerals, bromine, calcium chloride, epsomite and other natural magnesium salts, iodine, meerschaum, quartz, industrial crystals other than quartz, and nonfuel gases (air, helium, carbon dioxide). Alum Minerals The natural alums comprise a group of hydrated double sulfates, the most important of which are potash alum, KAI(S04)2.12H20, the "alum" of popular usage; ammonium alum, (NH4)AI(SO4)2, known mineralogically as tschermigite; and soda alum, NaAI(SO4)2.12H20. Kalinite, KAI(SO4)2.11H20, and mendozite, NaAl(SO4)2, 11H20, are fibrous monoclinic alums, distinct from the isometric species potash alum and soda alum.4 Alunite, KAI3(S04)2(OH)6, also known as alumstone or alum rock, has been used as a raw material in the manufacture of alum since early times. All the natural alums are highly soluble and occur as surface evaporation products in arid regions or in sheltered places. Potash alum, together with the other natural alums, commonly occurs as an efflorescence or crevice filling in argillaceous rocks and brown coals that contain disseminated pyrite or marcasite. The mineral is derived by the action of sulfuric acid, formed during the weathering of the sulfide, upon alkali-rich aluminum silicates. Ammonia alum is found chiefly in lignite or broad-coal beds and bituminous shales. Alunite is most commonly associated with acid volcanic rocks, where the rock has been largely altered and alunite formed owing to the presence of sulfuric acid solutions or vapors. Aluminum sulfate, which for most uses is the essential ingredient of alum, may be found in saline residues resulting from the evaporation of natural water and may be formed by the action of acid waters upon aluminous rocks. A deposit of natural potash alum occurs in an irregular network of veins associated with sulfur in rhyolite in Esmeralda County, Nevada, about 35 miles west of Tonopah and 10 miles north of Silver Peak. Alum was recovered at a plant operated on the property between 1920 and 1923 by crushing the ore to ¾ in., grinding to minus 80-mesh, and counter-current leaching; the resulting alum solution was then filtered and crystallized. Alunite was of much interest during World War I as a source of potash and during World War II as a source of alumina. The wellknown deposits at Tolfa, Italy, are veins in trachyte and have been the basis of alum manufacture there since the middle of the fifteenth century. Pure alunite is insoluble in water and in common acids, but if it is heated to 500°C it loses its water of hydration, and the residue consists largely of anhydrous potash alum, part of which is readily soluble in water or acids. If the heat is increased beyond 500°C, most of the sulfur combined with the alumina is released as oxides and the residue consists of potassium sulfate and alumina. Thus, either potash alum (and aluminum sulfate) or potassium sulfate and alumina may be made. In the

Fig. 1 shows a volute aging break which developed spontaneously in a hardened and tempered steel helmet between 19 and 38 days after it had been tested ballistically. A similar break, shown in Fig. 2, developed spontaneously in a similar helmet about 40 days after the ballistic testing. In this case the rupture occurred abruptly and with a loud report. The path of rupture in this second case, though much the less regular, is the more interesting of the two, in that it is an approximation to two parallel volutes centered at the point of impact of the projectile, just below D. Several weeks later, after the photograph for Fig. 1 was taken, a similar doubling of the volute crack occurred in this helmet, starting from the end of the eyelash crack near A and spreading thence to the left contra-clockwise for about 1/2 in. The negatives from which these pictures are made have not been touched up in any way, save writing the letters on them. In both cases the trajectory of the bullet was normal to the initial surface at the point of impact, and in both the helmet passed the ballistic test without detectable cracking, under a velocity of impact not far below that which usually causes perforation. The initial surface itself was very nearly spherical throughout the region covered by the break.

BAUXITE is produced in Arkansas from two mining districts in the central portion of the State. These are (1) the Fourche Mountain district, immediately south and southeast of Little Rock in Pulaski County, and (2) the Bauxite (town) district, about five miles east of Becton in the eastern part of Saline County. These two mining districts are about twelve miles apart, separated by territory which, so far, has produced a negligible amount of commercial ore. Mining was by open-pit methods exclusively until 1924, when underground methods came into use. From 1924 to 1930 about 40 per cent of all of the ore produced in Arkansas was mined by underground methods, mainly by retreating caving.

IN his well-known work,1 published in 1867, P. Ritter von Rittinger gives the following formula for the velocity of a particle settling in still water: v=C/D(a -1) and for average grains he assigns to the constant C a value of 2.44. As is well known, the value of C depends on the shape of the grains resulting from crushing, and it is obvious that values obtained for coal particles will not only be very different from those for ore particles but will even be characteristic of coal from a certain seam. The only way of finding an accurate value of C, applicable to conditions in Russia, where all coal-washing plants are built on German principles, is to conduct a series of tests of which the results will determine what value of C is to be used. In the investigation outlined in this paper the theories of Prof. Robert H. Richards2 were taken as the basis of the tests; the slimes were removed from the charges to eliminate the trouble of handling them; and to obtain accurate results free from errors inevitably resulting from human observation, photographic apparatus was used and a series of pictures taken which form the basis for constructing a suitable diagram of velocity vs. time.3

This paper presents the development of diamond coring of the Weber sand section in the Rangely Field, Colorado. The description and operation of the diamond-coring equipment is included as well as the economics and results obtained by its use. Diamond coring is compared with the other methods used for drilling the Weber sand. Two types of diamond coring are discussed. The first and the one used most extensively is the regular 6 ?x 3¾-in. diamond bit and bottom hole 50-ft barrel. The second type, which has also been used successfully by Stanolind, consists of a 4 13/16 x 2 11/32-in. cutting bit and reverse circulation coring equipment. The first type will be referred to as regular or conventional diamond coring while the latter type will be referred to as reverse circulation diamond coring. Introduction Diamond coring has been used for many years in mines, quarries, surface coring at dam sites, laboratory work, and so on, but, until recently, had never been used very extensively in coring oil sands and other oil-bearing strata. It was demonstrated early in its development that hard forma-tions could be cut rapidly and that core recoveries far exceeded those obtained with conventional hard rock bits and quite often 100 pet recovery was obtained. However, the poorly constructed diamond-coring equipment and resulting high costs of early diamond coring slowed down its progress. Early in the development Of the Rangely Weber field, Rio Blanco County, Colorado, the Rangely Engineering Committee selected key wells that were to core the Weber section in its entirety. These cores were to be analyzed and various sections tested to gather sufficient information so that accurate reservoir studies could be made. The number of wells selected were kept at a minimum inasmuch as the productive Weber section, which is found at an approximate depth of 6000 ft, is thick, being as much as 600 to 700 ft on top of the structure. The Weber section is also comparatively hard to drill. For instance, one well took 60 days to core 490 ft of Weber sand with conventional coring equipment. It was noticed, however, that Core Labora-verse diamond plug cutter could quickly cut a plug from. one of these hard cores. This fact led to the serious consideration of diamond coring the Weber sand. The first diamond coring at Randy was performed by Stanolind in August 1946 andl although we experienced some difficulties, the results definitely indicated that diamond coring would be successful at Rangely for .coring the Weber sand. As more wells were cored and the equipment improved somewhat, diamond coring became less expensive than drilling the Weber sand with the conventional rock bit. In less than one Year diamond coring has definitely Proved its usefulness in oil-field drilling operations in the Rocky Mountain area where formations quite often drill very hard. The practice of spot coring in hard oil-bearing formations with conventional coring equipment is giving way diaimond coring of the entire sections, thus givng an operator the complete picture.

The second type, which has also been used successfully by Stanolind, consists of a 4 13/16 x 2 11/32-in. cutting bit and reverse circulation coring equipment. The first type will be referred to as regular or conventional diamond coring while the latter type will be referred to as reverse circulation diamond coring. Introduction Diamond coring has been used for many years in mines, quarries, surface coring at dam sites, laboratory work, and so on, but, until recently, had never been used very extensively in coring oil sands and other oil-bearing strata. It was demonstrated early in its development that hard forma-tions could be cut rapidly and that core recoveries far exceeded those obtained with conventional hard rock bits and quite often 100 pet recovery was obtained. However, the poorly constructed diamond-coring equipment and resulting high costs of early diamond coring slowed down its progress. Early in the development Of the Rangely Weber field, Rio Blanco County, Colorado, the Rangely Engineering Committee selected key wells that were to core the Weber section in its entirety. These cores were to be analyzed and various sections tested to gather sufficient information so that accurate reservoir studies could be made. The number of wells selected were kept at a minimum inasmuch as the productive Weber section, which is found at an approximate depth of 6000 ft, is thick, being as much as 600 to 700 ft on top of the structure. The Weber section is also comparatively hard to drill. For instance, one well took 60 days to core 490 ft of Weber sand with conventional coring equipment. It was noticed, however, that Core Labora-verse diamond plug cutter could quickly cut a plug from. one of these hard cores. This fact led to the serious consideration of diamond coring the Weber sand. The first diamond coring at Randy was performed by Stanolind in August 1946 andl although we experienced some difficulties, the results definitely indicated that diamond coring would be successful at Rangely for .coring the Weber sand. As more wells were cored and the equipment improved somewhat, diamond coring became less expensive than drilling the Weber sand with the conventional rock bit. In less than one Year diamond coring has definitely Proved its usefulness in oil-field drilling operations in the Rocky Mountain area where formations quite often drill very hard. The practice of spot coring in hard oil-bearing formations with conventional coring equipment is giving way diaimond coring of the entire sections, thus givng an operator the complete picture.

Since the presentation, by the writer, of the initial paper on the embrittlement of copper,1 the subject has been investigated further along two separate lines. The first series of investigations involves the "double-deoxidized" coppers, while the second series is devoted to single deoxidizers other than those used in the investigations reported upon last year. The object of these experiments is to develop a type of copper that will show the minimum of detrimental effects after having been exposed to alternate oxidation and reduction. The fabrication of this material necessitates the use of alternate oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, at temperatures ranging up to 900" C. Following this treatment it is essential that the soundness and strength of the copper be unimpaired, even in sections of only a few thousandths of an inch in thickness. Materials The ensuing report embodies three separate groups of materials, which may be classified as follows: 1. Double-deoxidized copper using silicon and calcium boride. 2. Copper deoxidized with calcium. 3. Double-deoxidized copper using constant calcium content (0.075 per cent) plus silicon, or calcium boride. Last year, T. S. Fuller, of the General Electric Research Laboratory, suggested that if a properly deoxidized copper had sufficient deoxidizer residual in the material, this excess material might increase the resistance of the copper to the oxidation reduction cycle. In consequence of this suggestion, two small lots of "double-deoxidized" copper were prepared. The first, lot A, was made by adding 0.03 per cent silicon as the deoxidizer, following this by an addition of 0.55 per cent calcium boride immediately before pouring. The second, lot B, contained the same ingredients, but these were added in the reverse manner. Inasmuch as these lots were tested separately from the materials about to be described, it must be borne in mind that the materials cannot be grouped together, and are not directly comparable.

THE first commercial production of bituminous coal in the United States was in 1820, and formation of acid in the areas from which the coal was removed began at that time. Thus it is 130 years since the development of mine acid began. The coal operator has had to deal with the acid water produced in his mines, and his losses from corrosion of pumps and equipment have been tremendous. Other industries and the public have been forced to spend large amounts for their water requirements because of the acid discharge from the mines. There are many contradictions in the literature on this subject probably because of variations in the analytical procedures followed and differences in the methods of calculation and reporting. The opinions previously expressed may be summarized as follows: The production of mine acid has been looked upon as a simple chemical reaction wherein the oxygen of the air has reacted with pyrite to produce ferrous sulphate and free sulphuric acid. This reaction appears in many chemistry texts and generally has not been considered worthy of further study. Since the measurement of hydrogen ion concentration or activity was developed and expressed in terms of pH, indicator and instrumental methods for pH determination have become readily available, making it natural to think of it as a measure of acid content. Special purpose analytical methods applicable to potable waters, sewage effluents, and boiler waters, based in general upon the determination of what may be regarded as impurities, have been applied to more concentrated solutions constituting mine discharges, without reference to the fact that these specialized procedures had been developed to serve as operating guides for water-treatment plants. Increased flow was thought to result in a dilution of the acid produced. When the Sanitary Water Board of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania established a fellowship at Mellon Institute, the first approach to the problem was to review some of the chemical reactions involved and their relation to acid production. Since the sulphates of iron were among the principal constituents of coal-mine drainage, the first studies were based upon solutions of chemically pure ferrous and ferric sulphate. These are both neutral salts, that is, the iron and the sulphate are equivalent, but they produce acid reactions in water solution because as salts of strong acids with weak bases, they hydrolyze to form acid solutions. Solio is one of the best varieties. A good print is preferable to a negative. Blueprints, drawings, or pen or pencil sketches can be used for line engravings, but care should be exercised to make them legible and clear, especially in the case of blueprints. Tracings or photographs of drawings are preferable to blueprints. Rough sketches can be used, if necessary. Photographs should be sent flat, not rolled. Do not put reference letters or other marks on photographs; if such letters or marks are necessary, fasten a piece of tracing paper to the top edge, trace a rough outline of the picture upon it and then place all letters, etc. on the tracing paper lithe exact position you wish them to appear. Restrict the number of micrographs as much as possible on account of the considerable expense involved. Standard magnifications for non-ferrous metals and alloys are recommended as follows: 10, 25, 50, 75, 100, 150, 250, 500, 750, 1000, 1500. Micrographs should be trimmed to 2 1/4 X 2 1/4 in. (six micrographs to a plate), or, if larger, up to 3 1/2 X 4 in. (two to a plate). The smaller size should be adopted if consistent with adequate representation of the subject. With each micrograph should be attached an explanatory title, together with the actual magnification, etching medium, treatment, etc., indicating what the author intends to show.

SOME of the outstanding features of petroleum production in Illinois during 1923 were: (1) Sustained production from the older wells, due to cleaning and deepening; (2) good results from new drilling in a few localities; (3) large percentage of dry holes, many of which were ill advised tests, with a resulting high cost of the new production; (4) decrease in the number of productive wells in the state; (5) low average price of crude petroleum, a serious factor over the entire country. FIG. 1.-ANNUAL TOTALS OF ILLINOIS PRODUCTION. The total production of Illinois for 1923 was 8,710,000 bbl.,1 a decrease of 7.2 per cent. from that of 1922. Of this amount, it is estimated that about 8,500,000 bbl. were produced by old wells, many of which had been cleaned and deepened somewhat, and approximately 210,000 bbl. were obtained from the new wells drilled during the year. About 95 per cent. of the oil comes from the southeastern field in Clark, Crawford, and Lawrence Counties, where production is almost entirely from Pennsylvanian and Mississippian rocks. Extensions of the productive area were made in Clark, Wabash, Marion, and Jackson Counties. Some important gas development has been accomplished near Jacksonville, in Morgan County, and at Gillespie, in Macoupin County.
