The action of mercury on stressed brass to produce cracks was known before Moore, Beckinsale and Mallinson1 showed that actual season cracking did not occur spontaneously but could be induced by ammonia. These investigators studied other substances, including diphenylamine, without finding that anything other than ammonia could cause season cracking Grimston2 reported season cracking in cartridge cases stored in wooden boxes wetted with dilute sulphuric acid pickling solution. Season cracking associated with sulphur dioxide, water vapor and air has been reported by Johnston,3 although he reported that trimethylamine and pyridine did not cause cracking. Jevons4 has ascribed season cracking of brass in certain instances to trimethylamine, "aldehyde amine," "ketone amine" and pyridine, but no experimental work was done evidently to prove this definitely. Pyridine was investigated by Morris,5 who found it to have considerable cracking power. In the present investigation, the object was a qualitative evaluation of a number of representative amines with respect to their ability to cause season cracking. Thus it was desired only that an appreciable vapor pressure of each amine be obtained in order to make the test as severe as possible, without attempting to test equivalent concentrations for comparative purposes. MEthods Specimens TWO types of specimen were used: 1. Unannealed 70-30 brass CUPs formed from 0.040-in. thick sheet. Height of cup Was 13/8 in. and diameter was 17/8 inches. 2. First draw pieces of caliber .50 cartridge cases in the unannealed condition (70-30 brass)- The cups were representative of a thin wall and thin base specimen, whereas the draw pieces have a thick base (1/4 in.) and a thick wall (approximately 3/32 in.). Both types of specimens contained high residual stress and cracked in less than one minute in a solution of I per cent mercurous nitrate and I per cent nitric acid provided that this was receded by a 30-sec. pickle in 40 per cent nitric acid. Specimens were prepared as follows: (1) degreased in trichlorethylene, (2) rinsed in H2O, (3) pickled 5 min. in 10 per cent by volume H2SO4 (1.84 SP. gr.), (4) rinsed in H2O, and (5) dried. Amirtes Tested In selecting the amines, representatives of the three series of amines, and one series of substituted amines were chosen. The aliphatic series was represented by the methyl and ethyl primary, secondary and tertiary amines. These are the simplest aliphatic amines. For the aromatic series, the phenyl primary, secondary and tertiary amines were selected as being the simplest. The heterocyclic series was represented by pyridine, which is a simple heterocyclic base (tertiary amine).

THE occurrence of twins in aluminum ingots cast under certain conditions has been well established. For instance, Herenguel and Lacombe1,2 have observed a twinned columnar structure in 99.5 and 99.9 pct Al, solidified by continuous or semicontinuous casting. The structure, which they termed "basaltic," appears in the form of elongated crystalline fibers of alternating luster. Herenguel and Lacombe2 found sections of flat crystalline plates composed of twin crystal plates, in which the twin plane (111) and a [I121 direction contained in the twin plane are parallel to the principal heat gradient. This orientation relationship is different from the usual orientation texture observed in cast face-centered cubic metals, where the [100] direction is approximately parallel to the long columnar axes lying in the direction of growth." A large amount of twinning has also been observed by the present authors in semicontinuous cast aluminum of 99.2 pct purity, Fig. 1. Mondolfo4 has suggested that the twinned cast structure forms by a deformation twinning process as the result of uneven cooling stresses within the ingots. A rotating disk of iron precipitant in a high temperature batch reactor has been used to study the kinetics of precipitation of nickel from low concentration aqueous solutions. Under inert atmosphere conditions, for temperatures up to 150°C, the rate of nickel deposition at pH25°C of 5 to 6 is controlled both by the rate at which nickel ions reach the surface and the rate of chemical reaction at the surface. However, the presence of oxygen in the atmosphere above the reacting system increases the nickel deposition rate dramatically. It is suggested that under the experimental conditions used, hydrogen atoms are adsorbed on both the iron and nickel, thus reducing the number of sites available for the cementation reaction. Oxygen acts as a depolarizer for hydrogen.

Natural petroleum gas occurring in the oil-bearing reservoirs is found to exist either as free gas associated with the oil and/or in solution in the oil. In some virgin fields practically no free gas is encountered under the reservoir conditions of pressure and temperature, although in other fields a considerable section of the "pay" horizon is occupied by free gas. In other words, a given oil field may or may not have a gas cap before the exploitation takes place. However, when the reservoir pressure is reduced to a point below the critical saturation pressure by withdrawals of fluids from the producing formation, the gas dissolved in the oil inevitably begins to come out of solution and becomes free gas. Under the controlled methods of production and drilling, a portion of this gas is produced with the oil to the surface and a portion of it remains within the reservoir to accumulate at higher structural levels toward which it migrates by virtue of its low specific gravity. The rate of growth of a gas cap in a given structure depends primarily upon the rate of decline in the reservoir pressure. If the rate of pressure decline is rapid, the gas cap likewise will grow rapidly. On the other hand, shrinkage in the gas-cap area was noted in some fields in which reservoir pressures wereincreasing. Determination of Gas-oil Contact and Thickness of Gas Cap The gas-oil contact can be conveniently located in the process of drilling a well and by electrical logging. However, very little can be found in the petroleum literature concerning methods of predetermining gas-oil contacts in producing reservoirs. Therefore, the writer feels justified in describing briefly a simple, workable, and inexpensive method of determining gas-oil contacts and outlining the limits of gas-cap areas in a field where such knowledge may be essential for efficient production and development operations. The method involves the determination of the following data: (I) Structural data, such as the depth or elevation of the top' of "pay" horizon; (2) reservoir pressures; (3) tubing and casing pressures at the well head; (4) static oil-pressure gradient; (5) static gas-pressure gradient. These data can be secured with a minimum of expense, inasmuch as the

ONE'S lifetime does not usually offer the oppor-tunity to observe and be a part of the commercial development of an entirely new material. Petalite has been known for over a century, but at first it was presumed rare. However, it was found to be so abundant that it has become a new and extremely useful industrial tool. Mineralogy Petalite is a lithium-aluminum-silicate mineral. It was from petalite that J. A. Arfwedson first discovered lithium in 1818. The theoretical composition of Li2O • A12O8 • 8SiO2 is equivalent to 78.4 pct silica, 16.7 pct alumina and 4.9 pct lithia. The mineral in its known commercial occurrence is colorless to white and rarely gray, transluscent and rarely transparent. It is brittle, has a vitreous luster, and occurs usually in cleavable masses (fig. 1). It is classified as a di-silicate, but is similar in composition to the metasilicate spodumene, Li2O.-Al2O8-4SiO2 (table I). However, their specific gravities are quite different (3.13 to 3.20 for spodumene, 2.39 to 2.46 for petalite). Occurrence Petalite specimens have been reported in many localities; however, there are only three known countries having occurrences of commercial significance. The classic locality is Sweden's Utö Mines, which, although reportedly still containing considerable petalite, have been closed and are not expected to be operated in the near future. At Varuträsk, in northern Sweden, petalite carrying 4 pct lithium oxide is the main ore. In 1946 there was reported about 1000 tons on hand. However, the iron content was 0.60 pet too high for other than chemical use. Petalite has been reported in western Australia. At the Cottesloe mine, where small quantities have been reported available, it is produced in conjunction with feldspar. Petalite occurs in considerable quantity in the feldspar quarry at Londonderry, and it was estimated1 in 1943 that over 3700 tons might be available. The petalite in South West Africa was first discovered by F. J. Jooste, a lawyer by profession, in 1938. The following year he discovered a much larger deposit, and in 1948 another important discovery was made. These deposits occur near Kari-bib and constitute the only known commercial deposits. Their full extent has not yet been determined, but huge massive blocks of petalite of the purest grade, running into many thousands of tons, can be seen in all these deposits. To date, 60,000 tons of high grade, low iron containing ore has been blocked out in the major bodies. Mining for years to come will be confined to simple quarrying. Mathematical solutions to complex mine ventilation problems are possible, but often the airway network is so complex that the mathematical solution becomes tedious and impractical. A fluid network analyzer, designed and built for analyzing mine ventilation problems has been in service at the Bureau of Mines' Pittsburgh station for approximately nine years. Using this analogue as a model, the mine ventilation network is simulated electrically by a combination of series and parallel circruits laid out to conform with actual mine airways. A tungsten filament lamp, referred to as a Fluistor, is used to simulate mine airway resistance. With the analogue ventilation model established, voltages of the proper amplitude to represent ventilating pressures are impressed across the circuit at points where mine fans and airshafts are located. Comparison of mathematical solutions of complex systems against analogue results showed a maximum variance of 3% for pressures and 2% for quantities. An electrical fluid network analyzer, designed and built especially for analyzing mine ventilation distribution problems, has been in service at the Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh, for approximately nine years. It is a nonlinear, low voltage, fluid network analyzer of the type developed by the late Malcolm S. McIlroy, Professor of Electrical Engineering, Cornell University, who cooperated with G. E. McElroy, of the Bureau of Mines, in adapting the instrument to mine ventilation systems. Several modifications have been made since the original installation, but a considerable part of this paper is drawn from G. E. McElroy's original description of the analogue.' The analysis of water or gas distribution systems2,3 led to the development of this type of network analyzer. Several similar units are now employed by utility companies for this purpose; however, the Bureau of Mines unit is the only one designed specifically for mine airflow problems. Other airflow analogues employing a similar principle have been used at the Central Research Station of the Netherlands State Mines,4 in England,5 and in South Africa.6 Information on these devices indicated they were somewhat inflexible because commercial lamps with a sufficient range of resistance are difficult to obtain. Computers for mine ventilation analysis have been developed in Germany which instead of lamps use a variable resistance to adjust for turbulent flow laws. These units are expensive, but excellent results have been reported in their application. THE ANALYZER Theory of Application: As airflow generally follows the law of turbulent fluid flow, resistance to flow is nonlinear; consequently, the problem has been to find a nonlinear resistance element of suitable range that can be used for electrically simulated airflow. Tungsten filament lamps operated on alternating or direct current approximate the square-law resistance characteristics of mine airflow over a large range below maximum or rated voltage; that is, the voltage drop varies approximately as the square of the current. Consequently, the heart of the network analyzer is a nonlinear resistor known as a Fluistor, which is simply a custom-made low voltage, tungsten filament lamp that is available in a progressive series of relative resistance values ranging from 0.05 to 500 in nominal 5% steps. However, variations in manufacturing large groups result in differences of 1 to 3%, but series arrangements required for high-loss branches can be matched within about 1%. Utilizing a combination of Fluistors and load circuits, the mine ventilation system is duplicated electrically. Intake load circuits are connected from power intake to primary points of the circuit network; segments of unregulated flow along intakes and returns are represented by Fluistors, regulated splits and leakage paths are represented by load circuits and Fluistors of proper capacity; and mine exhausts are connected to ground from the last point of the network to complete the circuit. For the special purpose of representing booster fans or natural draft conditions, boosters or separate source circuits are provided that can be inserted between any two points of a network to increase voltage to the required value. Three examples of open pits where toppling failure controls the stability and design of the slopes are described. Two examples involve the design of overall slopes in base metal mines. The third example concerns the analysis and design of remedial measures to prevent toppling failure from occurring in a critical slope in a coal mine. The analytical techniques for assessing toppling failure on a rational basis are discussed for the three examples. This includes an assessment of the important parameters which govern the stability for the toppling failure mode. The geological setting and input data for each example are described, as are the important external or limiting factors pertinent to the sites in question. A statistical cumulative technique was used to assess one of the most important input parameters in the two examples involving overall slope design. Both deep-seated toppling failures, involving the entire slope, and shallow bench failures are considered. Results of the stability analyses and their related engineering significance with regard to slope stability and design are discussed. A sensitivity analysis of various parameters is effectively utilized. Design charts are developed and evaluated accordingly. In the example where toppling failure was unavoidable, the rationale for design of stabilization techniques to prevent toppling is discussed.

Oxidation rate constants were determined for Cu-Pd and Cu-Pt alloys as a function of alloy composition and temperature. Reaction products were identified. Relationship between oxidation rate constants and diffusion constants in the reaction zones is discussed. THE mechanism of oxidation of alloys is consider--'¦ ably more complex and not so well understood as that of pure metals. The oxidation of a one-phase binary alloy of which one component is a noble metal should logically be the simplest case of alloy oxidation, for in this case one is concerned presumably only with the oxidation of the base metal and the diffusion process by which it reaches the reaction site. This had led a number of investigators to study such systems. Probably the earliest work was that of Tammann and Rienacker' on the tarnishing of Cu-Au alloys at temperatures up to 300°C. These alloys oxidize according to the logarithmic law, that is, the film thickness is proportional to the logarithm of the time. The rate of film formation was found to decrease with increasing gold content. Raub and Engel² investigated the oxidation of Au-Cu, Cu-Pd, Au-Ag-Cu, Au-Pd-Cu, and Ag-Pd-Cu alloys at 750°C in air. These alloy systems form a continuous series of solid solutions at the temperature of oxidation with the exception of those containing silver. Au-Cu alloys oxidize parabolically, the rate constant decreasing slowly with increasing gold content up to about 15 atomic pct* Au, and more rapidly thereafter. An alloy with 14 pct Cu forms only a very thin layer of CuO on the surface and probably also a subscale.† Alloys containing more than 14 pct Cu have scales consisting of CuO and subscales of Cu,O embedded in nearly pure gold. The Cu-Pd alloys obey the parabolic law except for slight deviations for alloys containing 53 and 84 pct Cu. The overall oxidation rate decreases rather smoothly with increasing palladium content. A scale consisting of a thin layer of CuO and a thick layer of Cu²O and a subscale of Cu²O embedded in nearly pure palladium was observed for alloys containing 84, 53, and 30 pct Cu. An alloy with 19 pct Cu formed only a subscale of CuO embedded in nearly pure palladium, and an 8 pct Cu alloy formed only a thin film which was presumed to be PdO. The ternary alloys considered by Raub and Engel oxidized in much the same way as did the binaries. Wagner and Grunewald³ found that Ni-Au alloys, oxidized at 900°C in oxygen, formed a scale of NiO and a subscale containing NiO and gold. The overall oxidation rate increases with increasing gold content, passes through a maximum and then decreases to zero for pure gold. The fact that gold increases the oxidation rate was attributed to "pores" in the scale. Kubaschewski' investigated the air oxidation of alloys of platinum or gold with up to 10 pct Cu or Ni at temperatures in the range 300" to 1550°C. Parabolic behavior was noted for all alloys except Au-Ni, with rates decreasing in the order Au-Cu, Au-Ni, Pt-Ni, Pt-Cu. The diffusion coefficients for the latter three systems are known, and they decrease in the same order. However, activation energies for the oxidation of these alloys do not agree with the activation energies for diffusion in the respective alloy systems. The brightest spot in the mineral economy of the Philippines is the rapid development of reserves and production of copper. If economic conditions remain favorable and the political climate is encouraging, production of this metal should increase at a rate of 25% per year for several years, long enough to rank this country as one of the major copper producers of the world. In 1965 the copper content of the Philippine concentrates was approximately 60,000 tons. It should total about 80,000 tons in 1966. A major part of the increase will come from the rich Lepanto mine located in Mountain Province, North Central Luzon. Daily production of ore increased from 1200 to 2000 tons at the end of 1965. The ore, consisting of enargite and luzonite, averages nearly 3% copper and 0.12 oz. of gold per ton. It is an under- ground operation with a cutoff grade of 2%. The ore is associated with extensive silicification under a volcanic cap rock. Further expansion to increase ore production to 2600 tpd is under way.

Conventional methods of producing crude oil generally leave in the depleted reservoir 1 to 3 bbl of oil for every barrel brought to the surface. This paper describes a field test which explores the possibility of using gas-driven liquid propane to improve oil recovery efficiency. Laboratory theoretical and experimental studies leading to the field test indicated that low residual oil values could be obtained using limited amounts of propane driven by gas. The field test involved (I) repressuring the reservoir to the vapor pressure of liquid propane, (2) injecting the liquid propane, and (3) injecting dry natural gas to drive the propane and oil to the producing wells. Considerable preliminary work, including new drilling, work-overs, and a pressure survey was necessary. During the test, oil production rates have averaged about nine times the final primary rates. The field average GOR is still below the pre-test value. Oil recovery to date is 112,000 STB. About one-third of the 143,-000 bbl of propane injected has been produced to date. Results of the C-2 block test are encouraging and larger, more definitive field projects ore indicated. INTRODUCTION The cost of finding new crude oil reservoirs continues to increase. Today the oil industry is drilling more and deeper wells and making fewer big discoveries. Nevertheless, the demand for oil and oil products increases each year. It is natural that oil companies, faced with this situation, concentrate on recovering more of the oil existing in our known crude oil reservoirs. There is room for much improvement. For every barrel of oil brought to the surface by present day methods of producing crude oil, generally 1 to 3 bbl are left behind in the depleted reservoirs. The "unrecoverable" oil in petroleum reservoirs is largely "trapped" by capillarity. Since flushing with a solvent is exceedingly effective in combatting oil loss due to capillarity, much effort in this direction has been made in recent years1,2,3,4,5. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has been suggested as a relatively inexpensive. abundant, easily recoverable solvent for crude. Some operators have observed striking responses in oil recovery at production wells offsetting input wells in LPG storage reservoirs6,7,8. In spite of the low unit cost of LPG, however, it is uneconomic in general to inject a volume of LPG into a reservoir to remove a like volume of oil. A modification of solvent flushing in which a limited quantity of liquid propane is gas driven through a reservoir appears capable of recovering much more than 1 bbl of oil per barrel of propane injected. Also, most of the propane injected should be recoverable for sale or re-use. Since such a process could well have widespread and profitable application, The Carter Oil Co. is making an extensive evaluation of the technique's possibilities. Laboratory development of the gas-driven propane recovery technique was sufficiently encouraging to justify testing in the field. On July 25, the first copper ore From American Smelting & Refining Co.'s Mission open pit nine was sent into the new 15,000-tpd concentrator : three clays later, the first rail cars containing the Mission concentrate were sent north to the smelter at Hayden, Ariz. Thus two y,ears after stripping was started, Asarco's new mine, located south of Tucson. went on stream several months ahead of schedule. The plant, designed and constructed by Western Knapp Engineering Co., is expected to be operating at full capacity about September 1. with present plans calling for the copper concentrate from Mission to be shipped to Asarco's smelters at Hayden and El Paso.

Results of the monitoring program showed that blasting was a major cause of Instability, and, after much experimentation, suitable blast patterns for mine production and pit wall integrity were designed. The experiences gained with double benching 'and wall cleanup procedures are discussed . The monitoring program also indicated that water was a contributor to instability, and methods of dealing with water In a rock with a low storage coefficient and transmissibility are described. Because of the danger of falling rock, photogrammetric methods are used for joint mapping and analysis, this work being contracted out. Joint strengths are measured on-site using a portable shear tester. Finally, a discussion of a complex failure is given.

A number of granitic rock specimens have been studied from the Stripa mine site in connection with a large-scale geomechanics research program. The purpose of the program was to evaluate and develop field and laboratory techniques for rock mass characterization and to determine design parameters for storage of nuclear waste. In this paper a minicomputer-based technique for studying dynamic rock properties in the laboratory is described, together with results from the tests. The specimens were tested under different uniaxial and saturation conditions. Specimens from a field-heated rock mass were also tested to determine if temperatures typical of those encountered with nuclear waste would introduce additional fracturing. Both Vp and Vs increased with stress for both saturated and dry specimens. Both Vp and Vs were higher for saturated specimens at all stress levels compared with the dry. The velocities increased linearly or near linearly with saturation. The test results on the previously heated samples indicate that attenuation is more sensitive to thermally-induced microfracturing than velocities. Analysis of the attenuation values with stress show that rock heated to 200°C is damaged, and that the damage is in form of low-aspect ratio fractures.

THE copper-mining district of Jerome, Ariz., is of such economic importance that the following brief notes may be of interest. The ore deposits are said by Ransome1 to be pre-Cambrian, and are contained in the pre-Cambrian schists of the region. In the vicinity of the mine (the United Verde) the schist stands nearly vertical .and strikes a little west of north. At least three varieties are distinguishable-(1) a green rock, schistose, on its margins but grading into massive material, which is evidently an altered dioritic intrusive; (2) a rough gray schist with abundant pheno-crysts of quartz, apparently an altered rhyolite; and (3) a satiny, greenish gray, very fissile sericitic schist that may be a metamorphosed sediment. The ore occurs in varieties (2) and (3), the main belt of dioritic rock (1) lying just west of the orebodies. The ore is said to follow as a rule the layers of fine sericitic schist. T. A. Rickard2 says that the ore at the United. Verde Extension mine is found at the contact of diorite and schist, that both diorite and ore are earlier than the regional metamorphism, and that the quartz porphyry (" rhyolite" of Ransome) is of post-Cambrian age.

Four alloys that precipitate the alpha phase from the beta of the copper-zinc system were heat-treated in various ways to develop as many forms of the segregate as possible. It was found that the precipitate may have the form either of plates or of needles. Plates usually result when precipitation occurs at low temperatures and needles when precipitation takes place at high temperatures. The needles tend to align themselves along certain planes in the matrix and to coalesce into plnte-like structures. The two phases were found to be related so that a (111) plane and [Oil] direction of the precipitate are parallel to a 10111 plane and 11111 direction of the matrix. DISCUSSION (E. A. (Written discussion).—Tllis report by Dr. Marzke covers completely all possible heat treatinents over a considerable range of compositiol~s in which a1pha precipitates from beta brass, and may be said to complete the Inctallographic part of this problern The lining up of ncedles of segregate to form plates, espeeially as shown in Fig. 5, appears to he regular, although the author's frequency plot in Fig. 11 makes it appear rather irregular. Has the author attempted anY correlation between some of the major dircetions and the oricntntaion of the parent grain as determined by X-ray analysis? Also, in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 the cross-sections of the needles appear to be straightsided and regular. Have these directions been correlated with the matrix latttice? Dr. Mnrzkr 's method of interpretation of the orientation rclationships between the alpha. and beta phases is a bit uncertain and seems to wed more explanation. If this relationship, as staited is such that :L (1111 plane and a [I 10] direction of that plane in the precipitate is parallel to a. {110} p1ane and a [111] direction of that, plane in the matrix, there mill be a maximum of 24 possible orientations of the alpha phase within a. single grain of the beta phasc. This relationship is expressed strercographical1y in Fig. 13, ill which the locations of a11 of the alpha {111} poles for the 24 orientations of alpha me given. Fig. 12 chccks fairly closely with this thcoretical plot,. with a few exeeptions which may be due to the inaceuracy inherent in the method used by the anthor in determining the orientations of the segregates. The method might have been refined somewhat had corrections been made for the displacement of the slip p1ancs upon deformation.
