The flotation behavior of quartz in the presence of alkyl ammonium acetates as a function of alkyl chain length has been interpreted in terms of hemi-micelle formation at the solid-liquid interface. The van der Waals cohesive free energy that is responsible for hemi-micelle formation has been found from these results to be 1.0 kT per CH2 group. This is in excellent agreement with literature values obtained from research on the properties of micelles in bulk systems. Collectors of the type CH3(CH2)n-2CH2-P, where P is a polar group and n is the number of carbon atoms in the straight alkyl chain, will induce flotation of an appropriate mineral at lower concentrations as n increases. This reduction in collector concentration with increasing n has been reported for such systems as xanthates on sulfides1,2 and amines on quartz.' The effect of chain length of alkyl surfactants on such solution properties as conductivity,' surface tension,' and solubility6 and such interfacial properties of solids as contact angle7 and electrokinetic potential8 have received considerable attention, but only limited quantitative descriptions of the effects have been given. The electrokinetic studies of alkyl amine salts on quartz indicated that the solution concentration of collector at which the marked change in electrokinetic potential of quartz occurs decreases systematically as the length of the alkyl chain increases. The aim of the present work was to obtain a quantitative description in terms of current theories of flotation of the effect of the hydrocarbon chain of alkyl ammonium acetates on the flotation behavior of quartz. BASIC PRINCIPLES The marked changes in electrokinetic potentials of quartz in dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) solutions were postulated to result from the association of adsorbed collector ions into two-dimensional aggregates, called hemi-micelles.9 Subsequently, the rapid increase in flotation rate of quartz was shown to coincide with hemi-micelle formation." We would like to discuss briefly the concept of hemi-micelles in terms of recent interpretations of micelles in bulk solution. Micelle hypothesis: In dilute solutions, alkyl ammonium and related salts behave as ordinary strong electrolytes, but at a certain concentration there is a marked change in physical properties of the solutions, e.g., in equivalent conductance, transport number, freezing point lowering and viscosity. To account for these phenomena, McBainl1 introduced the concept of micelles, which are aggregates of long-chain ions. It is believed that the ionic heads of the constituent ions of the micelle are in contact with water, whereas the nonpolar groups turn away from it and are in contact with each other. Work must be done to bring these charged polar groups together, but energy is gained (i.e., so called van der Waals cohesive energy) when hydrocarbon chains are expelled from the water and allowed to associate. For a given polar group, the tendency to form micelles will therefore strongly depend on the hydrocarbon chain length. The Lucy furnace, owned by Messrs. Carnegie, Kloman & Co., and located on the Alleghany River, on the outskirts of Pittsburgh, is a splendid modern furnace, 75 feet high, and 20 feet bosh. She had been working well on low grade ores of about 50 per cent., producing daily 68 to 75 tons. There was on stock 500 tons of Republic ore, one of the purest and best of the Lake Superior ores, averaging over 68 per cent. of iron, which had been procured for the purpose of making a trial for Bessemer iron. This was charged by itself, and Mr. Skelding, the founder, reports that he did not succeed in getting a single cast when it came down, before the furnace chilled from the hearth to the top of the boshes, some 25 feet. THE heavy-media separation plant at the Central mill of the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co., near Picher, Okla., was started in February 1939. Since that time twenty-four million tons of lead-zinc ore has been treated in the mill, of which approximately 70 pct has been treated by heavy-media separation. Until January 1945, galena concentrate from the flotation plant was used as the sink-float medium. At that time minus 100-mesh ferrosilicon was substituted for the galena, and its use has been continued. The purpose of this paper is to compare the operating results and the costs of operation of the two media. For the purpose of this comparison the period Jan. 1, 1943, to Jan. 29, 1945, has been taken to represent the operation using galena medium; the period Jan. 29, 1945, to Sept. 1, 1946, to represent the ferrosilicon medium. During the first of 'these periods about seven and one-half million tons was milled; during the latter, or ferrosilicon period, more than five million tons was milled. It is believed that these tonnages are large enough to give representative data. FLOWSHEET The Central mill has a capacity of 15,000 tons per day. Briefly, the treatment used consists of crushing the ore through 11/2-in. and wet-screening out the minus 3/16in. portion. The minus 1 1/2 plus 3/16in. washed product is treated by the heavy medium; the minus 3/16-in. product is deslimed and jigged. The heavy-media cone tailing is discarded and the cone .concentrate is recrushed and jigged for the production of a coarse lead concentrate. The cone concentrate, impoverished of lead, is then ground in ball mills and treated by differential flotation. The minus 3/16-in. jig product is similarly treated. HEAVY-MEDIA PLANT The heavy-media cone plant treating the minus 1 ½ plus 3/16-in. product consists of one open-top cone 20 ft in diameter by 20 ft deep, equipped with a central airlift. Concentrate is discharged from the top of the airlift to a 3 by 14-ft low-head Allis-Chalmers drainage screen. Medium drains back into the cone, from the first half of this screen. The last half of the screen is provided with washing sprays for further removal of medium. Cone tailing is similarly drained and washed. Undersize from the washing screen is thickened and then cleaned in the medium-cleaning plant. When galena was used as a medium, cleaning was done in Fagergren and Denver flotation machines. The ferrosilicon is cleaned in three 36-in. and one 24-in. Crockett magnetic separators. A flowsheet of the cone plant is shown in Fig 1.

A relatively small area in Malaya, about 200 miles long by 40 miles wide, is the most important source of tin in the world. Some tin is recovered in other parts of the peninsula. Of the tin mined, 98 pct is recovered from alluvial deposits. From 1935 to 1941 the average annual world production of tin was 190,000 tons. The average annual production from Malaya during the same period was 62,000 tons or about one third of the total. Other producing countries, in order of importance, were the Netherlands East Indies 34,000 tons, Bolivia 30,000, Belgian Congo, Nigeria, Siam, Burma, China, and a few others with smaller amounts. The serious shortage of tin during the war period was due to the fact that the Japanese were occupying Malaya, Netherlands East Indies, Siam, Burma, and China which, together, formerly were producing 65 pct of the world supply. Because of the importance of tin in the world economy, and because of the fact that little is generally known in this country regarding the methods of recovering the tin in Malaya, it is believed that a short description of the industry, as carried on there, may be of interest to many of the readers. In addition you may be interested in the effect of the Japanese occupation, subsequent recovery of the properties and conditions existing at that time. The Malay Peninsula lies at the southeast tip of Asia. Singapore, a British colony, is situated on a small island at the southern end of the peninsula. It is a city of nearly a million population, an important world port, the site of a large British naval base and of one of the tin smelters. The Federation of Malaya consists of nine states, plus Penang, Malacca, and other small areas formerly part of the Straits Settlements, and it now covers the entire peninsula. The civil administration is controlled by the British. A constitution was adopted recently after reaching agreement with the Malay Sultans of the various states, who retain control of religious matters. The Capital is at Kuala Lumpur, a city of about 200,000 population, 250 miles north of Singapore and about half way to Penang. The country covers an area of 51,000 square miles, an area about equal to that of Florida and about one third that of California. It has a population of about seven million consisting of Malays, Chinese, East Indians, and a relatively small number of Europeans. The principal products are tin and rubber. There are over three million acres of planted rubber. The country is not self-supporting agriculturally as about one third of the necessary food supplies is imported. Rice is the principal food of the Asiatic population and some of the recent unrest is caused by a shortage of rice and the consequent high price. Good highways have been built through the settled part of the country. A railway, Government owned, extends from Singapore northward through the entire peninsula. The climate is tropical but health conditions are good for a tropical country. A wet beneficiation technique for producing wollas-tonite from its ore in high yield and purity has been evaluated in a pilot plant operation at the rate of 75 tons per month. Finely crushed, unsized wollastonite ore mixed with water is passed through a high in tensity oscillating wet magnetic separator of unique design and in a single pass over 90% of the wolla-stonite exhibiting a crystal purity of 99.8% is obtained irrespective of size of feed fraction. Thereafter, the material is processed by closed cycle standard wet milling and classification techniques to yield a 1µ size product, though any mesh size up to and including 50 mesh may be obtained, if desired. Costs appear to be significantly lower than those available from dry processed techniques. Wollas tonite made by this unusual wet process appears to have potential utility in the following fields: ceramics, paints, plastics, paper, organic finishes, reinforcement of portland cement items, controlled porosity refractory ceramic foams, cinder and concrete block paint, and the like. The 1µ and certain chemically processed varieties of wollastonite may have unusual utility in the paper industry both as a filler and as a coating material and in the organic finish industry. Extensive deposits of wollastonite ore equivalent to an average tenor of 50% to 60% of this latter mineral in easily separable form exists in and around Essex County in northern New York State in reserves of the order of several tens of millions of tons. While important portions of these deposits are susceptible to open pit mining techniques, one operation near Wills-boro, N.Y., involves tunnel mining and dry milling and beneficiation techniques. This mill and tunnel mine is presently being operated by The Cabot Corp. and a variety of particle sizes are now sold into markets in the ceramic, paint, plastic finish, floor tile and in similar fields in substantial tonnages on a repetitive basis. Serious investigation and study over the past several years has indicated that, outside of the obvious economies of open pit techniques for mining purposes, wet beneficiation and milling procedures applied to the ore not only represent a potential for greater economies in the production of a superfine finished product but yields products of improved properties exhibiting increased market potential which may not be available from the dry ground product. The Lewis and Deerhead deposits, controlled by the Adirondack Development Corp., appear to be identical to the Wilisboro deposit. Utilizing ore taken from the Lewis and Deerhead deposits, a pilot plant process for the wet beneficiation, milling and classifying of wollastonite ore has been operated for several months. After scalping a marketable garnet product from a minus 16 mesh dry crushed feed on a high intensity roll magnet the balance of the material is then roll crushed in a closed cycle until it will pass a 50 mesh screen. The product constitutes the feed of the wet magnetic separator. The heart of the new beneficiation process is a cyclically operated wet magnetic separator which exhibits the unique feature that unsized feed is easily handled. Product yields of higher purity are equal to that obtained with dry magnetic separations which use closely sized dry ore and multiple passes, but only produce wollastonite of about 98% mineral purity as determined by sink float techniques. It was anticipated that the wet processing through the grinding, milling and classification stage would yield a low cost 1µ ground product which should make available greatly increased applications for the mineral beyond those presently enjoyed. The improved purity was also expected to provide coarser sizes which might be utilized as a raw material for chemical modification which again would expand the uses of wollastonite. The evidence thus far collected appears to indicate that this premise may be expected to be fulfilled. There are on the surface of wollastonite particle sites at which cheinical reactions may occur1. It is believed that wet ground material provides a better base which will allow wollastonite a deeper entree into the field of chemical raw materials. Wet ground at 20µ and finer permits with certainty a number of chemical reactions, some of which are mentioned later in this article. The density and viscosity of 1iquid thallium have been measured by absolute methods to temperatures of about 200° and 150°C, respectively, above the melting point. These new data reported, especially density data, do not closely confirm previous work. Density p, in g per cu Cm, is shown to vary linearly with temperaluve t, in °C, according to the equation p = 11.658 - 1.439 X l0-3t. The viscosity data obey the well-known Andrade equation nv1/3 = A exp C/vT , the constants A and C for thallium having values of 2.19 x A and 79.648, respectively. This paper reports some new data for the density and viscosity .of liquid thallium. Measurements of these fundamental physical properties were undertaken as part of a continuing research program at the Mines Branch, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa. Canada. A literature search has revealed that data are so scarce that there could not be a consensus on the true values of the density and viscosity of liquid thallium. To be more specific, there exists only one set of viscosity data' and only two acceptable sets of density data,273 one of which is limited in scope.3 In Liquid Metals Handbook,3 another density study is reported but indications of impurities in the thallium render the results suspect. In this situation, further careful experimentation was required to realize the true density and viscosity of thallium. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Density. Densities were determined using a graphite pycnometer. The technique and its accuracy have been discussed in earlier papers.4'5 It is considered that experimental data can be obtained which are accurate within +0.05 pct, all sources of random and systematic errors having been evaluated. Density results for thallium were identical whether measured under an atmosphere of argon or a vacuum of 5 x 10-6 torr and, for the most part, the argon atmosphere was used. Viscosity. Viscosity measurements were made in an oscillational viscosimeter by an absolute method—the liquid metal being held in a closed graphite cylinder. Design and operation of the apparatus, constructed in this laboratory, have previously been discussed.6 For thallium, runs were made under a vacuum of about 2 x 10-6 torr. To evaluate viscosity coefficients from the various experimental parameters, the mathematical analysis of Roscoe7 was used. Measurements of the necessary parameters and the accuracy of these measurements have also been discussed.6 The cylinder dimensions were corrected for the anisotropic expansion of graphite, as discussed for density measurements.4,5 It is well-known that thallium oxidizes rapidly and hence a newly machined surface quickly tarnishes in air. The oxide film, however. is nonadherent and is easily removed by rubbing or by solution in water. Hence, immediately before use, both density and viscosity charges were immersed in water, wiped dry, and quickly transferred to the apparatus which was then rapidly evacuated. Specimens removed after determinations were only slightly tarnished and there was no other evidence that tarnishing affected the results. For example, the sharpness of the specimen edges from the containing vessels indicated complete filling by the liquid metal. Thallium of 99.999 pct purity was used in this investigation. Because of its high toxicity care was exercised in handling this material. For example, the melting procedure to prepare machinable ingots was carried out in an open, well-ventilated area, while protective gloves were always worn when handling the solid metal. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Density. Measurements were made over a tempera-ture range of about 200°C above the melting point. The results are listed in Table I and plotted in Fig. 1. From the graph it is evident that the relation between density and temperature is linear. Such a relation has been observed before in this program for other metals and alloys475 and elsewhere by other workers. A least-squares analysis of experimental data gives the equation: pT1 = 11.658 - 1.439 x 10-3t where p = density in g per cu cm and t = temperature in "C. In Fig. 1, together with the present results, the data of Schneider and Heymer2 in the corresponding temperature range have also been plotted. Evidently, the two sets of data do not agree well, the results of Schneider and Heymer being about 0.6 pct higher. Viscosity. Viscosity data were obtained from the melting point, 303.5°C, up to 457.5"C. The data are listed in Table I and in Fig. 2 the plot of these results demonstrates a smooth curvilinear relation between

TURNBULL and his collaborators1,2 have developed the theory of homogeneous nucleation as applied, inter alia, to solidification of liquid metals. Vonnegut³ and Turnbull4 have shown that if a liquid metal is subdivided into small droplets a vast majority of them will undercool very considerably before solidification, generally to as low as about 0.8 of the freezing temperature on the absolute scale. The nuclei effective at small degrees of supercooling in bulk metal seem to be internal or surface heterogeneities, relatively small in number. If the metal is subdivided, those droplets that happen to contain such nuclei will solidify at a temperature not greatly below the true freezing point, but only a small part of the whole volume will be affected and the majority of the drops will under-cool to the much lower temperature at which homo- geneous nucleation occurs as a result of fluctuations. It occurred to one of the authors that an appropriate subdivision to give effective freedom from random nuclei is produced during the solidification of many alloys that contain a minor amount of a phase of low melting point, and that one might then expect marked undercooling of the distributed phase. Experimental: The alloys selected for initial study were copper with minor amounts of lead and bismuth, and aluminum with tin. In all these alloys, the major component freezes at a temperature not much below that of the pure metal, and there is little further change in constitution on cooling until the lower melting point constituent freezes in an almost pure state. Cooling curves were taken using the controlled heat flow method permitting approximate specific heats to be obtained. Chromel-alumel thermocouples were used, with the standard emf tables, since extreme precision was not needed. The crucible (3/4 in. id, 5/16 in. wall) was made of B & W K-20 insulating brick. It held about 10 cc of the alloy being investigated. The cooling rate was 2.5" to 2.9°C per min under a controlled temperature difference of 20°. Approximate specific heats were computed from the inverse rate curves together with data from a blank run and from a standard run with a copper cylinder of known heat capacity. The alloys for investigation were made from high-purity metals (99.99+pct) and cast into graphite molds. The castings were machined to fit the crucible and to provide a hole for the inner thermocouple. Cooling curves were taken after heating to a temperature about 50" above the melting point of the minor, lower melting-point, constituent. Results The lead phase in an alloy of copper with 5 pct lead did not undercool more than 3" below the melting point of lead (327°C) either as cast or after annealing to produce a new dispersion of the liquid phase. A copper-zinc-lead alloy with 23.75 pct zinc and 5 pct lead undercooled more but showed no thermal effect below 319°C. A cast alloy of copper with 5 pct bismuth undercooled to 249°C (M.P. bismuth 27l °C), but once solidification started it was completed at the same temperature. This was anticipated, since the bismuth forms a nearly continuous phase between the grains of copper, and a solid crystal nucleated anywhere would rapidly* con- sume the entire network of liquid, unless the physical continuity of the liquid were broken through volume changes, inadequate fluidity, or gas evolution. Similar arguments apply in the case of copper-lead alloys, where the lead-rich liquid forms a network along grain edges, though not grain faces. In both cases there would be a few isolated particles

In August, 1977 the United States Congress passed Public Law 95-87 which has been commonly referred to as the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (or SMCRA). This title is somewhat misleading in that the act creates as many regulatory requirements for underground coal mines as for surface coal mines. How- ever, this paper will concentrate on the effects of SMCRA on designs and stability for various activities of surface coal mines, specifically those concerning "Disposal of Excess Spoil". In the past, the objective of most laws and regulations applicable to the mining industry has been to achieve goals of safety or environmental concerns for all types of mining. However, SMCRA is unique in that it sought to regulate-all-activities of coal mining from initial data gathering, exploration, mine design and facilities design to reclamation activities and design. More specific to the stability of the activities of surface coal mining, special criteria for design and construction performance standards have been promulgated for the construction and maintenance of roads, dams and embankments, coal processing waste, ex- cess spoil piles, backfilled reclamation and pit slides. The criteria for design for the previously mentioned facilities has been enumerated by regulations and in many ways restrict the use of site specific design parameters. The restrictions imposed by regulations significantly inhibit the engineer's ability to develop the best practical and economical design and in some cases may re-

Cadmium, along with other impurities such as lead, gallium, germanium and indium, is characteristically found associated with zinc ores, the average ratio of zinc to cadmium being about 200 to 1. The increasing demand for cadmium has led most zinc producers to develop a means for its recovery. The separation and recovery of this byproduct constitutes an important development in the metallurgical field. Zinc sulphide concentrates, principally from domestic sources, are processed at Donora Zinc Works and they assay approximately 60 pct zinc, 30 pct sulphur, 0.37 pct cadmium, and 0.8 pct lead. Concentrates are roasted to convert zinc sulphide to zinc oxide. Sulphur evolved as sulphur dioxide is used to manufacture 60º Baume sulphuric acid by the lead chamber process. The roasted calcine is sintered to remove the remaining sulphur and volatile impurities. Fume from the sintering machines is collected by Cottrell pre-cipitators and sent to the Cadmium Department for cadmium removal. The sintered product, a crude zinc oxide, is then mixed with coke and salt and charged into horizontal retorts for reduction to zinc metal. Furnace residues are then passed through a Waelz kiln which recovers practically all of the remaining zinc as an oxide. This oxide is collected by Cottrell precipi-tators and returned to the sintering plant for further processing. The following discussion covers operating procedure, and equipment used in the Cadmium Department for the manufacture of cadmium and its byproducts. (See attached Flow Sheet, Fig 1.) The production of cadmium may be divided into several steps, each of which will be discussed separately. These steps are as follows: 1. Raw Materials—Sinter Plant Cottrell dust, acid sludge and sulphuric acid. 2. Sulphating—Separation of lead. 3. Purification—Separation of impurities other than zinc. 4. Precipitation—Separation of cadmium from zinc. 5. Briquetting—Preparation of sponge for charging to furnace. 6. Smelting—Distillation of cadmium metal. 7. Remelting—Casting into commercial shapes. 8. Recovery of Rare Metals—Separation of germanium, gallium and indium. Raw Materials The raw material, or Sinter Plant Cottrell dust, from which the cadmium is manufactured, is recovered by Cottrell units collecting fume from two Dwight-Lloyd sintering machines. An average analysis of this dust is 36 pct zinc, 1.5 pct sulphur, 17 pct lead, and 5.5 pct cadmium, with associated elements in smaller amounts. A lesser tonnage of material removed from the sintering machine fans, and called fan cleanings, is also treated for cadmium. It is lower grade material and analyzes approximately 41 pct zinc, 1.2 pct sulphur, 14 pct lead, and 4 pct cadmium. Cottrell dust and fan cleanings are delivered to the Cadmium Department by monorail crane in bell-bottomed dump buckets. Acid sludge and 60" Bauine sulphuric acid are received from the Acid Department. The acid sludge is a mixture of lead sulphate, sulphuric acid and zinc sulphate, and is recovered mainly from the floors of the acid chambers or storage tanks. The acid sludge is delivered to the Cadmium Plant in a lead lined bucket. The 60º Baume sulphuric acid is delivered through a lead pipe to a lead lined storage tank. Sulphating Four well ventilated lead lined sulphating tanks, 8 1/2 ft in diam by 12 ft deep, are used. These are steel tanks lined with 20 lb lead on the bottom and 16 lb lead on the ides, equipped with Hastelloy side agitators. 15 hp motors drive 24 in. propellers at 450 rpm. There are water connections to stuffing boxes to keep sludge from entering the bearings. The tanks are covered with removable wooden lids and are connected to marine plywood

IT is difficult to judge how much influence the success attained during its first year, 186465, by the School of Mines at Columbia had on developments in education for the mineral industry elsewhere in the immediately subsequent years. The facts are as follows: 1. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology began giving instruction in February 1865, with a mining course included in its curriculum. 2. Early in 1865 the faculty of the Department of Science, Literature and the Arts of the University of Michigan requested permission from the Regents to establish "a course of study to be called the School of Mines . . . Also that the degree of Mining Engineering be conferred on students who should complete the course of study prescribed in the same." A resolution authorizing this was adopted by the Regents on March 28, 1865. 3. Samuel Hooper endowed a Sturgis-Hooper professorship of geology at Harvard in 1865 with the intention of making it a nucleus of a new School of Practical Mining and Geology. 4. Yale appointed Alfred P. Rockwell professor of mining in 1865. 5. Lafayette College appointed Henry S. Osborn professor of mining and metallurgy in 1865. 6. Washington College (as Washington and Lee was then known), rising out of the ashes of Civil War destruction, made a fresh start in 1865, with General Lee as its president, and offered a mining course in the first catalogue thereafter published. 7. Lehigh University, founded in 1866, had a mining curriculum from its beginning. 8. Rensselaer Polytechnic began offering a curriculum in mining and metallurgical engineering in 1867. An evaluation is made of the possible cautsal relationship between twinning and fracture in molybdenum. For single-crystal material, the yield stvess in compression and the fracture stvess in tensiow obey a similar angular- relationship which follows approximately a 1/cos2 ? law. where 0 is the angle between the specimen axis and the nearest (100) plane. This sittlilarity between yield and fracture behavior casts doubt on the interpretations made previoltsly that a 1/cos2? relationship supports a critical normal fracture stress criterion. SINCE fracture in brittle materials takes place at stresses an order of magnitude lower than the theoretical strength of the lattice, it must be postulated that some stress-concentrating effect is operative during the fracture-initiation process. Several mechanisms have been proposed whereby the necessary stress concentrations could be produced. The well-known Cottrell mechanism1 describes a dislocation interaction which can lead to the formation of an incipient cleavage crack on a cleavage plane, and both zener2 and stroh3 have discussed models which predict the stress concentration at the intersection of a slip band with a grain boundary. When twinning occurs twin/twin intersections and twin/grain boundary intersections represent another possible means of fracture initiation. Although still controversial, the concept of twin-induced fracture is supported by a weighty mass of evidence, which has been reviewed in a recent paper.4 This investigation was conducted in order to assess the extent to which the brittleness of molybdenum can be ascribed to this cause. Emphasis was placed on seeking direct metallographic evidence for twin-induced fracture such as arrangements of twins located at the fracture origin. EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM Materials. The experimental materials are described inTable I. From the chemical analyses and estimates of the amounts of interstitials likely to be retained in solution,5 it is concluded that all were mul-tiphased systems. X-ray diffraction experiments6 showed no evidence of preferred orientation in the polycrystalline materials. Single crystals were grown from Molybdenum X and Y using the floating-zone technique,' in a vacuum of better than 3 x 10-5 Torr. However difficulties were experienced with Molybdenum X due to violent gas evolution from the molten zone, and additional crystals (Crystals 3 to 6) were produced by annealing for 5 1/2 hr at 2300°C under a vacuum of 10-4 Torr. Techniques. A series of tension, compression, and bend tests was conducted. Tension tests were used to demonstrate brittle behavior, to measure brittle-fracture stresses, and to provide fractured specimens for metallographic inspection. Compression tests were employed in order to obtain some ductility and a measure of the yield stress. Furthermore, it was considered that compression loading would permit the study of crack nucleation in the absence of propagation. The bend tests were conducted to facilitate identification of the fracture origin, which would be expected to be at, or near, the tensile surface of the sample. Tests were carried out at temperatures between 78" and 298°K attained by means of a liquid-nitrogen evaporator of modified Wessel design.' Specimens were fashioned by mechanical grinding, and, prior to heat treatment, were electropolished at 10 v in a 3:l mixture of ethyl alcohol and sulfuric acid, using a stainless-steel cathode. Except where noted, a strain rate of 4 pct per min was used. All specimens had a gage section 0.75 in. long; diameters of 0.10 and 0.20 in. were adopted for the tension and compression specimens, respectively, the former of single shoulder design, the ends being gripped in split collets with a conical bearing surface. In the bend test, electropolished specimens measuring 0.080 by 0.25 by 1.25 in. were deformed at 78°K by four-point loading. The bending device had spans of 1 in. between the outer and 4 in between the inner fulcra; it was stressed between the compression anvils of the Instron machine at a constant deflection rate. The response of CrzO3 and C~304 to various heat treatments was studied in are-melted iodide chromizim over the temperature range 1000" to 1750°C. These oxides, which are present as impurity phases in this material, were identified by X-ray diffraction teclzniques which were supplemented by optical metallop-aphy. As a function of increasing temperature, Crs04 is first observable in samples annealed at 1300°C and coexists with Cr2O3 (the low-temperature oxide) over a temperature range exceeding 200°C. As the temperature decreases, Cr3O4 dissolves with the concomitant precipttation of Cr2Y2. Both oxides precipitate predominantly at pain boundaries. The reactions which occur are involved with at least ternary equilibria, possibly due to iron which is present as an impurity in arc-melted iodide chromium. HILTY, Forgeng, and Folkman' reported in their investigation of the Fe-Cr-0 system that Cr3O4 (with about 8 pct Fe substituted for chromium) is a primary phase found in alloys with 9 or more pct Cr. They reported that this phase is stable only at high temperatures and that below the liquidus Cr3O4 is disproportionated into Cr2O3 and chromium-rich metal for both Fe-Cr-O alloys and in oxygen saturated pure chromium. Further, they proposed that CrsO4 forms by a peritectic reaction between Cr2O3 and the liquid. On the other hand, Hook, Garrett, and Adair2 found in their investigation of impurity phases formed in "pure" chromium (material consolidated from iodide chromium crystals) that Cr3O4 forms intergranularly and is stable as low as 1500°C which is 375OC below the melting point of chromium. The purpose of the research described herein is to determine the temperature range of stability of Cr3O4, and to show the nature of its decomposition. This further investigation indicates that Cr3O4 undoubtedly occurs in this material as low as 1300°C. The chromium studied was consolidated and fabricated from iodide chromium crystals (ICr-5) and contained Fe r 135 ppm, Si = 20 to 100 ppm, and 0 = 35 to 137 ppm. A complete chemical analysis is given elsewhere.' Annealing was conducted in 1 atm of purified helium and all samples were rapidly cooled (-200°C per sec) by withdrawing them from the furnace hot zone under a high flow rate of helium. The details of the electrolytic-etching technique and electrolytic-digestion techniques for preparation of insoluble residues for X-ray examination are given elsewhere also.' EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The Starting Material. THE Smackover oil and gas field lies in Ouachita and Union Counties, Ark., in the south-central part of the state, in T.15 and 16S., R.15, 16, and 17W. It is 10 miles north of El Dorado, the principal business and railroad center in the south-central part of the state, and extends from the town of Smackover in all directions. Productive territory having an aggregate area of nearly 55 sq. mi. has been developed. It extends 6 miles from north to south and 12 miles from east to west. The field may be divided into two parts: the east district, which includes the area east of the town of Smackover, and the west district, which includes the area west of the town of Smackover. In relation to the neighboring productive fields of Arkansas, the Smackover field is 9 miles north of .the El Dorado oil and gas field, 8 miles slightly west of north of the East El Dorado oil and gas field, and 16 miles east of the Stephens oil field. Smackover was discovered in May, 1922, when the Oil Operators Trust drilled well No. 1 on the J. T. Murphy farm, in the southeast quarter of sec. 8, T. 16S., R.15W. This well is located almost, on the top of the Norphlet dome and was drilled to the Nacatoch sand. It had an initial open flow volume of 30,000,000 cu. ft. of dry gas per day, and a rock pressure of 950 lb. per sq. in. In July, 1922, the V. K. F. Co. completed the first oil well in sec. 29, T.15S., R.15W., on the north side of the Norphlet dome, and 3 miles north of the first gas well. This well started the active development of the north and northwest sides of the dome.1

The Parkes process lead refinery of the International Lead Refining Co., at East Chicago, was built by the International Smelting & Refining CO. to treat the lead bullion produced by its Tooele plant, at Tooele, Utah. The plant was designed and constructed under the direction of the writer. Ground was broken Apr. 16, 1912, and exactly six months later the plant was in operation and lead was being cast. The capacity of the plant, running 25 days per month, is 5,000 tons. The four products of the plant are common lead, corroding lead, antimonial lead, and Dore bullion. The site is an area, 64 acres in extent, lying north of 151st Street, between McCook Avenue and the Canal. The Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad, Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal, and Pennsylvania Railroad enter the yard at the plant. There are five storage tracks and space for storing 100 cars in the yard. the main lead to the storage tracks passes over a 100-ton track scale on entering the yard.

Biological as well as geological research has made very successful use of the qualities that the physicists have detected in radioactive substances. Outstanding examples for the vast new fields opened in this part of the border-land between the disciplines of geology and physics are the "radio thermal geology" [July, 1909, see 1 of "References" at end of paper] and all that is connected with the use of the radioactive disintegration clock for the age-determination of rocks and minerals [2]. In structural geology, not unlike to recent bi-ological uses of radioactive material, their "tracer" properties were helpful. Changes in Radon concentra-tion in soil-air, especially accumulations, led to hidden crevices and fault-zones. High contents of Radon in spring-water gave clues as to the types of rocks they had flowed through [3, 4). One specific application of the small admixtures of radioactive material, however, has only lately found some atten-tion and that is their use in linking beds of sedi-mentary strata otherwise only poorly identified be-cause of the lack of fossils or other characteristic properties. To be useful for this purpose, two con-ditions have to be fulfilled: (1) The amount of radioactive material per unit-weight of rock in a given horizon should be uniform over a large area; (2) this same amount should change fairly rapidly in the vertical succession of layers.

The Western World's gold reserves now exceed 23,000 mt (750 million oz), 65% of which exist in South Africa. Although several major mines are reducing production or closing because of depletion of reserves, new mines or expansions of existing mines are coming on-stream which will maintain an annual production of 684 mt (22 million oz) of gold well into the 1990s. These new operations by the South African mining industry represent the largest expansion since the opening of the Witwatersrand gold fields in 1886. Included in three new mines being opened is that of Anglo American Corporation's Elandsrand plant, their fir& new gold venture in South Africa in seventeen years. Current average grade of South African mines is 8.2 g Au per mt (0.24 oz per st); and while the cost of the Elandsrand 135,000 mt (149,000 st) operation, including mine development, was about $314 million, it is estimated that the cost of a comparable operation started today and completed in the mid-1980s would be of the order of $480 million. New mines to exploit low-grade ore bodies are, therefore, likely to be few in number, and further expansion will undoubtedly be in the form of extensions to existkg operations where cash flow can be used to finance development. The authors' first monograph, "Gold and Silver Cyanidation Plant Practice," devoted a section to South African cyanide plant operation; and it is believed that this new volume would not be complete without a description of Elandsrand, South Africa's newest gold plant. The Elandsrand mine is adjacent to Anglo American's Western Deep Levels on the Far West Rand. The decision to go ahead with the development was taken in mid-1974 from the results of exploration drilling carried out over a period of .lo years. Results of 17 bore holes and 68 intersections of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef had indicated a gold-.bearing reef less than one meter thick at a depth of 1,800 to 3,000 meters (5,900 to 9,840 ft). Preliminary studies indicated a mine of 900 km (560 miles) of underground workings would yield 725,000 kg (23. 3 million oz) of gold from 60 million mt (66 million st) of ore to be milled over a period of 34 years. Eventually, when the mine is in full production, the total hoisting capacity will be 300,000 mt per month (331,000 st) for a milling capacity of 225,000 mt per month (248,000 st). The Elandsrand surface facilities have been built on a low range of 0 hills to take maximum advantage of the 10 slope in transporting ore

There's a right way and a wrong way to store diesel electric systems and similar equipment for generating on-site power, according to James Frankow, service manager for Allis-Chalmers Corp's Engine Division. In any event, the less storage the better. Many generating sets are stored before installation, especially when new construction is underway. Improper storage, or mothballing, can create initial reliability problems. Therefore; arrange for inside storage with no drastic extremes in temperature or humidity. If engines and alternators are stored in areas other than inside a dirt-free and temperature-controlled building, the unit or engine should be completely covered and protected against the environment. Before covering it with a canvas or with plastic, the unit should first be sealed at the following critical engine openings:

The mines of southeast Missouri's Lead Belt have been in operation since 1864, almost 100 years. During this period about 10 pct of the total ore available has been left in place as pillars, and this now represents the best ore reserve left to the older mines. St. Joseph Lead Co. has been investigating various plans of pillar recovery for several years. The example to be described is only one possible approach under a specific set of conditions. Conditions vary greatly in the different areas within the Lead Belt, and the same approach would be entirely inadequate in certain other areas, but there are important sections where this system is clearly applicable. Horizon mining is practiced in the Lead Belt, and stopes may vary from 10 ft to well over 100 ft high. Fig. 1 is a plan view of 6100 stope, the area to be discussed. For these mines this is a small stope, only 10 to 12 ft high. Before any plans were drawn up for pillar recovery, three independent estimates of the pillar grades were made by the mine superintendent, the mine captain, and the mine geologist. After these results were averaged, pillars indicated to be of economic grade were marked for removal as shown. At this stage several alternatives were considered: 1) retreat with caving, 2) concrete replacement pillars, and 3) systematic bolting and retreat. A retreating system with caving was not chosen because the roof was known to be too bad even to permit loading a blasted pillar before caving would begin. Concrete replacement pillars would have been too costly and would have required a large crew, bulky materials, and unwieldy equipment. Systematic bolting was chosen as being most acceptable for the following reasons: 1) Limited area and spans were involved. 2) Only minor modifications to the jumbo would be required for bolting. 3) Only a two-man bolting crew would be needed. 4) Only compact bolting materials would be required. 5) The bolting plan could be modified to allow
