THE equilibrium between titanium in liquid iron and titanium oxides has been studied by Hadley and Derge.' They have shown that a minimum occurs in the oxygen content of the metal between 0.1 and 1.0 pct Ti, but its exact level was not fixed. The oxide phase in this minimum range was principally TiO, containing some iron oxide. On the other hand, for concentrations above 5 pct Ti the oxide phase was TiO and the oxygen content of the metal increased rapidly with increasing titanium content. From their observations and the free energy of Ti0 and TiOz reported by Kelley and ah,' it is possible to derive approximate values for the activity coefficients of titanium and oxygen in liquid iron-titanium alloys and the conditions for equilibrium in steel deoxidation. Neglecting possible departures from the stoichio-metric composition, the condition of equilibrium with Ti0 may be expressed as follows: TiO= Ti_ + C) log K = log NTl + log [% O] + log yTi + log fQ Here as a matter of convenience the titanium concentration is expressed in mol fraction while that of oxygen is in weight percent. The activity coefficients are yTi and fo. The value of log fo approaches zero as the concentration of titanium approaches zero, while that of log yTi approaches a limiting value of In Fig. 1 the sum of log NTi + log [% 0] is plotted for mol fractions of titanium between 0.05 and 0.50. The smooth extrapolation gives a value of —4.15 which corresponds to log K — log y:i . We therefore have the equation: According to the data of Kelley and Mah,' the free energy of formation of Ti0 at 1900°K is -82,400 cal. The free energy of solution of half a mol of oxygen in iron, taking 1 pct 0 as the standard state, is -29,300 cal. From these we write: From these equations the activity coefficient of titanium at infinite dilution in iron is found to have a value of 0.011 or log y°. = -1.96. This is only an approximate value but is certainly better than the estimated 0.05 in Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking To obtain approximate values for the activity coefficient at intermediate concentrations, it is as- sumed that log yTi(l is constant and equal to -1.96. This corresponds to a value of E;: = 3 In yTi/aNTi = 9.0 which is not unreasonable We now have the value for the activity of titanium and the percentage of oxygen in equilibrium with TiO. It is therefore a simple matter to calculate the activity coefficient of oxygen which is shown in Fig. 2. The effect of titanium is rather large, being comparable to that of vanadium, but not so large as has been reported for aluminum. The slope of the line at low concentrations corresponds to E: = aln yo/ aNTi=-0.37. At concentrations below 1 pct Ti the deoxidation constant and oxygen content for equilibrium with TiO, can be calculated from the foregoing data and the free energy of formation of TiO,, which according to Kelley and Mah is -144,600 cal at 1900°K. The free energy of solution of oxygen has been given; that of Ti to form a dilute solution with 1 pct Ti as the standard state is RT ln (0.5585 y:i/47.9) = -34,800 cal. From these data we find (for concentrations in wt pct): TiO, = Ti + 2 -0; hFTgO0= + 51,200 cal log if =-5.89 The interaction coefficients, concentrations being expressed as wt pct, are e;: = alogfTi/a[% Ti] = +0.048 and e:' = a logfo,/a[ojTi] = -0.187. The calculation gives the following results which, in view of the impurity of the oxide phase, must be regarded as approximate:

Since the equation of continuity governing transient flow of gases through porous media cannot be integrated mathematically into a simple usable expression free from series terms, empirical and approximate equations have been advanced relating cumulative production and future production rates from gas reservoirs with time. In order to check the accuracy of these empirical equations and to obtain an insight into the initial conditions pertinent to the solution of the fundamental equation of continuity, experimental work has been conducted on a vertical 2-in. tube, 91.6 ft. high, packed with unconsolidated Wilcox sand. The results presented in graphical form show the accuracy of the approximate relations. Data from unsteady-flow runs on the 2-in. experimental tube are presented graphically, and are applied to obtain an equation for this specific case, and are offered as an aid in future investigations of this basic equation. The close agreement between equations calculated for steady-state flow and the experiments indicates that the decline of actual gas reservoirs may be treated by an application of these equations without serious error. Introduction The steady-state flow of gas through a porous material—that is, flow wherein the boundary conditions do not vary with time—is subject to analytical solution. Muskat1 has shown that the general differential equation is simply the La Place equation in P2. Direct solutions may be at once obtained. The unsteady state, on the other hand, is not analytically reducible. Since nearly all phenomena of practical interest in gas production involve flow in the unsteady rather than in the steady state, it has been necessary to derive approximate Solutions to the general equation. The validity of such approximations has not hitherto been adequately tested. In the experiments to be described a simple, closed, linear system is substituted for the real complex gas field. The general results, however, are independent of the geometry Of the system' The problem studied is the rate of production, and the accompanying variations in pressure, when one end of a linear porous system is opened to the atmosphere and permitted to produce to exhaustion. An approximate solution to the general differential equation, based upon the assumption of an "infinite series of steady states," is then applied to the results to determine the validity of this method of dealing with actual reservoirs. Theoretical Considerations The fundamental differential equation governing the flow of a gas through a Porous medium can be derived easily from the equation of continuity, Darcy's law, Boyle's law and a statement of the thermo-dynamic nature of the flow. Some rock mechanics theorists believe that if a hydraulically placed backfill can be introduced in a stoped out area, which will minimize wall closure by taking high stresses across the fill with minimum compaction, then heavy ground and rock burst phenomena will be minimized. The paper will discuss a large scale laboratory project when fill strength was increased over four times by the head vibrated method and up to well over 20 times by the double placed, cemented, vibrated head method when compared to conventionally placed fills. The only preconditioning of the 60% solids by weight slurry was the addition of cement in some tests.

Geothermal energy can substitute for and compete with other fuels, but until now it has been used only in special situations where it costs much less than alternate fuels. Geothermal heat is expected to be developed where it can: (1) compete with alternate fuels, (2) replace scarce fuels, (3) be more environmentally acceptable, or (4) is especially adapted to local needs. Economic problems in development include the often high capital costs of wells and gathering systems and the long lead-times required for electric generating plants. The large investment and long payout times for large industrial uses adversely affect the economics.

THE mechanism by which the super-saturated solid solution of 20 per cent silver in aluminum decomposes has been reported in two previous publications. 1,2 The analysis of streaks in Laue photograms showed that thin platelike particles (the so-called Guinier-Preston aggregates) form upon {111} matrix planes in the early state of decomposition.1 The size of these particles is larger, the higher the temperature at which they form in accordance with nucleation theory;3 at all temperatures they increase in size with aging.2 When they have grown thick enough to afford three-dimensional diffraction, powder X-ray photograms show that the structure is not that of the equilibrium precipitate y but that of a transition lattice ?'. Since this is also platelike in shape and also lies upon the {111} matrix planes with the {110} direction in the matrix parallel to the {11.0} direction in ?', it seems likely that the original platelet particles are merely ?' in an early stage of formation, and thus finely dispersed. The atomic spacing and pattern on the {00.0} plane in ?' are identical with those on the {111} matrix plane to which it lies parallel, and since comparable directions in the two planes are parallel, the lattices are thus coherent at the interface; an analogous coherence has been found in aluminum-copper alloys.3 The structures ?' and y are both close-packed hexagonal and are oriented alike; they differ only in interatomic distances. Consequently, ? ' is regarded as y strained from its ordinary dimensions by the lattice coherency between it and the matrix.2 The lattice movements that transform the matrix to the equilibrium precipitate appear to be very simple.2 The mechanism of precipitation in this system is simpler and is more precisely known than that in any other system,2,4 hence the system should be a profitable one for the difficult task of correlating property changes with structural alterations. The present report provides additional studies on powder X-ray diffraction from alloys of 10 per cent, 20 per cent and 30 per cent Ag, and presents the correlation of crystallographic changes with changes in microstructure, Brinell hardness and electrical resistivity of the three alloys. PREPARATION OF SAMPLES AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The preparation of the 20.2 per cent Ag alloy has been described.2 Alloys containing 9.9 and 29.7 per cent Ag were prepared from 99.97 per cent Al and 99.99+ per cent Ag using a similar procedure. Results of preliminary research on the use of small diameter water jets at high pressure for cutting rocks has demonstrated the possibility of effective cutting of anthracite. Detailed research has, therefore, been conducted at the Skotchinsky Institute of Mining to study the dynamics and structure of the small water jets and the mechanism by which they cut coal. One of the objects of this research was to obtain data for the design of a machine for cutting rock, based on the same principles as that for cutting coal. The productivity of water jet mining machines depends on the hydro- dynamic parameters of the jet. Therefore, the research on small diameter water jets was directed, initially to a study of the nature of the variation of these parameters, and to obtain a profile of dynamic pressure distribution over the section of the jet. As has been confirmed previously, the required jet pressure (to cut coal) lies in the range of 100 to 500 atmospheres. These pressures were utilized for the research. The diameter of the nozzle was changed as ~follows; 0.97; 1.24; 1.5; 2.17; 2.87; and 3.57 mm. Graphs showing dynamic pressures for each nozzle diameter and varied axial dynamic pressure were obtained over distances ranging from 2 to 70 cm from the nozzle. One of the most important hydrodynamic parameters of a jet, closely related to the dynamics of jet disturbance in air, is the magnitude of the axial dynhmic pressure. A study of the variation in this pressure with increasing distance from the nozzle led to the separation of the jet into three specific parts, which differ from each other not only in the nature of the change in dynamic pressure, but also in structural properties.

There is much information contained therein which should be emphasized. The idea of handling iron-bearing rock in quantities comparable to the porphyry coppers does seem at first blush to be beyond the pale of commercial possibility. Yet, today in the Adirondack region 25 per cent.

APPLICATIONS for loan contracts for the exploration, development and mining of strategic and critical metals and minerals are now being accepted by the Department of the Interior. The RFC is authorized and directed by Executive Order 10161 to make such loans but the Secretary of the Interior must pass on the necessity for the loan. Applications should be addressed to James Boyd, acting deputy administrator, Defense Minerals Administration, Department of the Interior, Washington, D.C. rather than to the Field Offices of the Bureau of Mines as was first planned. Application forms are not yet available but it has been learned that data accompanying the application should include the known quantity and grade of reserves, the anticipated rate of production, the equipment, supplies, and man power required for the additional production, etc.

§1. FOUR ASPECTS OF FLOW in the plastic deformation of steel by overstrain, such as punching, wire-drawing, tensile rupture, etc., are: (1) The inter-granular, i.e., the relative movements of the several grains, each as a whole; (2) the intra-granular, i.e., the relative movements of the masses of ferrite or cementite and pearlite within those grains; (3) the intra-pearlitic, i.e., the relative movements of the pearlitic ferrite and cementite; and (4) the crystal unit slipping, i.e., the travel of the minute units past each other, along the slipping planes, giving rise to the slip bands of Ewing and Rosenhain. It may be objected justly that (2), (3), and (4) are in a sense "intra-granular," and that (4) is in a sense "intra-pearlitic." Hence clearness may be gained at times by calling these "Movements of the 2d, 3d, and 4th orders" respectively.

Results are presented from tests of dynamic fluid-loss rates to cores from clay-gel water-base drilling fluids containing different commercial fluid-loss control agents (CMC, polyacrylate or smt,ch), organic viscosity reducers (quebracho and complex metal lignosulfonate) and oil at several different levels of concentration. In the dynamic system the most effective individual additives to the clay-gel drilling fluid, based on cost-equalized concentrutiom, were found to be starch and the viscosity reducers. These results do not conform with the rankings determined by API fluid-loss rests, which indicate CMC, polyacrylate and starch to be the most effective and comparable. Generally, minimum dynamic fluid-losr rates were attained at cost-equalized concentrations of additive (including thinner) of about $1.00/ bbl, or less. For chernically treated clay-gel drilling fluids, both the standard and the high-pressure API filter-loss tests were found to he inaccurate indicators of trends in dynamic fluid-loss rates under the test conditions used, particulurly for drilling muds containing viscosity reducers. From a practical field viewpoint, restrictions on the applicability of the API fluid-loss test are such that it is open to question whether or not results of this test can be used routinely with confidence as an indicator of control of down-hole fluid loss under field treating conditions. INTRODUCTION The petroleum industry spends large sums of money during drilling operations to control the fluid-loss properties of drilling fluids based on the standard API filter-loss test,' which is a static filtration system. Laboratory studies' ' of dynamic filtration have shown that in a given time period filtrate loss from a circulating mud stream is greater than from a static system and that it is a function of linear mud velocity, pressure and the properties of the drilling fluid. Ferguson and Klotz' and Horner, et al," observed that (I) the dynamic fluid-loss rates for the drilling fluids used were not related to the extrapolated API filter loss and (2) the drilling fluids with the lowest API filter losses did not have the lowest dynamic fluid-loss rates. However, there has been no published information on the relative effects on dynamic fluid-loss rate as a given drilling fluid is treated with increasing amounts of chemical additive to reduce the API filter loss. Such information is economically important because drilling-fluid costs rise rapidly as chemical requirements increase. This paper presents the results of a study of dynamic filtratioi rates to cores from a clay-gel water-base drilling fluid treated with various commercial viscosity reducers and chemical fluid-loss control agents. The dynamic fluid-. loss rates to cores are compared with the standard API filter-loss values at several different levels of additive concentration. Dynamic filtration rates were obtained in each experiment under two different simulated wellbore conditions: (1) filtration just above the bit through a new mud cake laid down dynamically on a freshly drilled formation and (2) filtration up-hole through a mud cake formed by deposition of a static filter cake on top of the initial dynamically formed cake. The latter case corresponds to the bottom-hole conditions existing above the bit when mud circulation is restarted after a stand of pipe has been added or a round trip has been made to change the bit. Except for the short-duration, high-rate filtration beneath the bit where no mud cake can form, these two conditions probably represent the two extremes of dynamic filtration. Because thickness of a dynamic mud cake formed on freshly exposed formation is limited by the shearing action of the mud stream, the filtration rate for this condition is high. On the other hand, once circulation is stopped and a static mud cake forms on top of the dynamic cake, re-starting circulation has only a small effect on the cake properties and filtration rate is much lower thereafter. A discussion of the mechanics of mud-cake deposition and dynamic filtration is outside the scope of this paper but may be found in more detail in publications by prior investigators. APPARATUS AND EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS The test equipment used to simulate the dynamic flow conditions existing during drilling was a modification of that described previously by Krueger and Vogel: A schematic flow diagram is shown in Fig. 1. In general, a power-driven, high-pressure mud pump capable of delivering up to 60 gallmin was used to circulate drilling fluid parallel to the faces of 1-in. diameter sandstone cores mounted in a 2 3/4-in. ID high-pressure test cell. Pump rates were controlled by means of a magnetic clutch to maintain an average axial fluid velocity of 110 ft/min in the annular space between the cell wall and a 1 1/2-in. rod positioned on the center line of the cell. The core specimens were Berea sandstone plugs sealed with plastic inside 1 1/8-in. OD tubes and were fluid-saturated prior to use. Burettes were used to accumulate fluid discharged from the cores. The mud sump shown was used for treatment and storage of the drilling-fluid samples during a particular test. For more than 80 years the Bessemer process has depended upon the ability, skill, and judgment of the blower, although as early as the I860's it was recognized that the process would benefit by some type of instrumental contro1.l IIowever, instruments with sufficient recording speeds did not exist, so the end-point determination was always dependent upon the blower's eye. This placed an obstacle in the way of precise experimental work, because of the absence of the necessary records and reference points as reported by Work.2 The use of the photocell provided the instantaneous record of the blow that made this experimental work possible and provided more scientific control for the process as discussed by Graham,3 A brief description of the progress of the blow will illustrate the recording function of the instrument. The silicon in the iron is being oxidized during the first minutes of the blow, as pointed out by Henning4 in a table showing the order of metalloid elimination. The product of this oxidation is a solid that remains in the converter, so there is virtually no flame during this part of the blow. This low flame luminosity is illustrated by the flame recording shown in Fig. I, where the silicon blow is plainly marked. The dull flame of the silicon blow gradually gives way to the brilliant carbon flame as the increasing quantities of carbon monoxide formed inside the converter burn to dioxide upon contact with the atmosphere above the vessel. When the carbon reaches some low value under 0.20 per cent, there is insufficient menoxide formed to maintain the dioxide flame, so its intensity drops. Throughout the flame drop carbon continues to burn, until at some value around 0.05 per cent an arrest occurs in the recorded drop. This point has been designated as the end point. The period of time from this end point until the vessel is turned upon its side and blowing has stopped has been called the afterblow. This afterblow is used as a measure of the degree of metal oxidation, and uniformity demands that it be controlled within narrow limits. Iron and blowing conditions are likely to change several times during a turn, necessitating corresponding changes in end-point control. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss these changes, the factors that make them necessary, and their bearing upon the quality of steel. Carbon-FeO Relationship In the Bessemer process oxidation relationships are precise. Fig. 2 shows a graph of the carbon-FeO relationship. The familiar "bomb-test" method, described by Mccutcheon and Rautio,5 was used for obtaining these and all other dissolved FeO values herein reported, all tests being taken from the converter before deoxidation unless otherwise noted. All tests of 0.10 per. cent carbon and above were obtained from metal blown for duplexing. McGinley and Woodworth6 reported iron oxide values for blown metal, but their tests were obtained by a . different method than were those

THE metal iron has physical and chemical properties which are somewhat different from those of steels, but a knowledge of the pure metal is a useful starting point in studying the behavior of steels. Solid iron exists in two different crystalline forms, called alpha (a) and gamma (?) iron, the former being the ordinary form at room temperature. When heated above the "A2 point," 768 C (1414 F), the metal becomes nonmagnetic, and at the "A, point," 910 C (1670 F), it undergoes a change in crystalline form to become gamma iron. In the range 768 to 910 C, it is sometimes called beta (ß) iron to distinguish it from the magnetic alpha, but the two are identical in crystal structure. When gamma iron is further heated to 1400 C (2552 E), it changes into delta (d) iron, which is identical with beta or non- magnetic alpha iron. Pure iron melts (in an inert atmosphere) at 1537 C (2800 F); the melting point is generally lowered by alloys or impurities. PROPERTIES OF IRON AT HIGH TEMPERATURES Many of the properties of iron undergo abrupt changes at the transition temperatures.1 For example, in heating through the A, point, a sudden shrinkage in volume occurs. Similarly, melting is attended by sharp physical changes such as an increase in volume. Table 16-1 contains a summary of the measured physical properties of pure iron at several temperatures. Usually the properties change smoothly within the range of stability of a given form, but this is not always true. For example, the specific heat reaches a sharp maximum at the A2 point although no trans- formation occurs. (See Fig 14-1.) Solvent Powers of Liquid Iron. Liquid iron is capable of dissolving most of the other metals and many nonmetallic elements as well. PRINCIPLES OF TEMPERATURE COMPENSATION IN MAGNETIC INSTRUMENTS The principle underlying the majority of magnetic intensity variom-eters is a comparison of the force to be measured with another force of known magnitude. The known force may be (a) of a magnetic nature, such as magnetic fields produced by magnets or coils, or (b) of a mechan-ical nature, such as (1) the elastic forces of wires, or (2) the force of gravity, such as employed in bifilar magnetometers and magnetic balances. In instruments of such type, usually a magnetic system is employed, free to move about either a horizontal or vertical axis, on some sort of a suspension. If the earth's magnetic field alone were present, such a system would adjust itself into the direction of the field or that of its components. Owing to the simultaneous action of the comparison force, however, the magnetic needle assumes a position that differs from the direction of the magnetic force; for all such instruments, the angle of deflection a is given by tan a = F/X, where F is the known and X the unknown earth magnetic force component. In other words, the magnetic system merely serves as an "indicator" for the position of balance of the two forces. Considering the matter from this point of view, it is not immediately obvious why the temperature of such a magnetic system should modify the results. In magnetic instruments, we may distinguish two different effects of temperature: (1) a magnetic effect and (2) a mechanical effect. The first is due to the fact that the magnetic moment of a magnet drops with an increase in temperature. This drop is characterized by the temperature coefficient of the magnetic moment µ (see equation 1). The second effect is due to the change in the .torsion of suspension wires with temperature or to the expansion of lever arms of masses acting on magnetic balances.

Starting from Muskat's theory of water and gas coning, maximum permissible oil production rates without water and/or free-gas production have been determined, in a broad range of reservoir and well parameters, using the potentiometric model technique. The main assumptions made are as follows: (1) the reservoir rock is homogeneeous (either isotropic or anisotropic); (2) the volume of the aquifer underlying the oil zone is very small, so that it does not contribute to reservoir energy; and (3) the gas cap expands at a very low rate, so that it can be assumed to be in quasi-static conditions. The results obtained are presented in the form of diagrams which can be used for solving two types of problems: (1) given the reservoir and fluids characteristics, as well as the position and length of the perforated interval, determine the maximum oil production rate without water and/or free-gas production; and (2) given the reservoir and fluids characteristics only, determine the position and length of the perforated interval which optimize the maximum permissible oil production rate, without water and/or free-gas production. INTRODUCTION In oil reservoirs where the oil-bearing formation is underlain by an aquifer which does not participate in the production mechanism, water-coning is a limiting factor to the flow rates of producing wells. Production rates are usually kept to a value that will prevent the water from entering the wells. The entry of water into a well lowers its productivity by increasing the weigbt of the fluid column; moreover, the separation of water from the effluent, at the surface, may constitute a very difficult problem in cases of heavy viscous oils. A similar situation is encountered in oil reservoirs with a gas cap overlying the oil-saturated zone; here a downward gas cone is induced by the flow of oil towards the producing wells. Production rates must be low enough to prevent the gas from being produced; producing gas from the gas cap would be a waste of energy. Of course, water-coning and gas-coning phenomena can occur at the same time in the same reservoir if the oil-producing formation is both overlain by a gas zone and underlain by a water zone. Due to its relevant practical importance, the mechanism of coning was studied by many people.2,3,5-8 Defining the conditions for getting the maximum water-free and/or gas-free oil production rate is a difficult problem, often encountered under one of the following aspects: 1. Predict the maximum flow rate that can be assigned to a completed well without the simultaneous production of water and/or free-gas. 2. Define the optimum length and position of the interval to be perforated in a well, in order to obtain the maximum water and gas-free production rate. A systematic study of these problems was made by means of the electrical analog technique. The results of this study are presented here, under the form of a set of curves providing solutions for the above stated problems. These curves are valid only for homogeneous forrnations, either isotropic or anisotropic. Should the formation be non-homogeneous (by horizontal or vertical variation of permeability, shale diaphragms, fractures, etc.), a specific potentiometric study would be required for each specific case. Especially when shale diaphragms of some radial extension are present, the critical rates observed are much larger than would be expected from the diagrams. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM In the present study the aquifer is supposed to be of such limited volume that it does not contribute to the energy of the reservoir. Moreover, the gas cap is supposed to expand at such a low rate that the potential gradient in the gas cap is negligible. Under static conditions water-oil and gas-oil interfaces (T1 and T2) are both horizontal. When the reservoir production starts, below each well these interfaces take a cone-like shape (Fig. 1) having as an axis the axis of the well. This shape results from the equilibrium between potential gradients in the oil zone and gravitational forces due to density differences between oil and water and between oil and gas. Assuming the oil-bearing formation to be homogeneous and the oil to be incompressible, the analysis of the problem (see Appendix) shows that the oil-water and gas-oil interfaces are stable only if the oil production rate of the well is not higher than the following values.

The Atomic Energy Commission is investigating the distribution of uranium and thorium in the Precambrian of the western United States and the relationship of time-space-facies patterns of uranium and thorium enrichment in the Precambrian, to the major resources of umanium in Mesozoic and Cenozoic continental clastic sediments. The results of preliminary studies in the southwestern. United States are summarized. Approximately 50% of the uranium resource of the Free World is in deposits of Precambrian age, principally in lower Proterozoic conglomerates in Canada and South Africa (Uranium Resources, Joint Report, ENEA and IAEA, 1967). Most of the uranium resource of the United States is in Mesozoic and Cenozoic continental clastic sedimentary rocks that fill intracratonic basins. The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) is investigating the distribution of uranium and thorium in the Precambrian of the western United States and the relationship of time-space-facies patterns of uranium and thorium enrichment in the Precambrian to the major resources of uranium in the Mesozoic and Ce-nozoic host sedimentary rocks. This paper summarizes the results of preliminary studies of the Precambrian in the southwestern United States including New Mexico, Arizona, southern Nevada, and southern California (Fig. 1). The host rock provenances for the major uranium resources in epigenetic deposits of Mesozoic and Ce-nozoic age in the western United States were in areas of extensive Precambrian exposure along the eastern margin of the Phanerozoic geosynclinal belt (Fig. 2). Mesozoic continental clastic sediments in the Colorado Plateau contain about two-thirds of the uranium resource of the United States. These sediments formed from detritus derived from the Mogollon highland in the southwestern United States where the Precambrian was extensively exposed1-1 (Fig. 2). A genetic relationship may exist between this provenance and the major uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau. The Pre- cambrian might be equally important in the genesis of uranium deposits whether the most important process in the formation of these deposits was the leaching of low-order intrinsic amounts of uranium from Precam-brian granite or from Mesozoic pyroclastics derived from syntexis of the Precambrian basement rocks.' Precambrian Geochronology of the Southwestern United States The Precambrian geochronology of the southwestern United States is in an early stage of systematic study. Until recently, the only basis of correlation was through inconclusive field relationships. However, with the increased use of isotopic age dating, new data are becoming available for correlating regional and local events. As yet, there is no undisputed evidence of ages greater than 1.8 billion years (by) old in the southwestern United States. However, most geologists who have studied the region agree that volcanism and marine sedimentation of predominately eugeosynclinal facies took place in a northeasterly trending geosyn-cline prior to 1.7 by."' Because of insufficient evidence for a pregeosynclinal continental crust, some researchers believe the geosyncline may have developed on oceanic crust.' However, sediments metamorphosed to 1.7 by-old felsic paragneisses in the Panamint Range, California," and southeastward into southern Nevada are believed to have had a nearby continental provenance. The three Precambrian disturbances that are recognized in the southwestern United States are 1.6 to 1.8 by, about 1.4 by, and about 1.1 by-old (Fig. 3). In addition to plutonism, these disturbances are characterized by predominately lower-grade metamorphism. In this report, lower-grade metamorphic rocks include argillite, phyllite, slate, mica schist, and gneiss with relic sedimentary textures. Higher-grade metamorphic rocks, in this report, are recrystallized beyond megascopic recognition of the original rock type. Principal

This section was obtained last year during an examination of the iron-ore resources of the Rich Patch Mountain region and along Craig's creek valley. The geological members below the Oriskany and Lower Helderberg are exposed along the gap in a beautiful arch, while the higher formations appear in a more or less disturbed state on both sides of this arch, and are partly covered by dèbris. I have thought it of interest to the Institute to reproduce the drawing of this section at the gap which I made in my note-book at the time of my examination; those parts of the section, which lie at both sides of the arch, are only approximated. I give also a number of notes and measurements, referring to the Clinton formation and especially to the characteristics of the fossiliferous ore-seam opened in the various tunnels along the arch (see section). I. In Tunnel C: For the first 110 to 120 feet to second shute, we find the ore only here and there in small deposits, and interchanging with, or changing into, either a very siliceous limestone or a sandstone. New measurements of graphite and cementite solubilities in ferrite have been obtained to resolve disagreements among previous data. To measure graphite solubility, specimens of iron were equilibrated with rarious carburizing atmospheres at temperatures be-twee~z 480" and 1435°C. The carbon activity of each atmosphere relative to graphite was taken from published data. After quenching from each equilibration treatment the concentration of carbon (typically 10 pprn by wt) was determined from the height of the Snoek peak in the internal friction spectrum. A few inclividual analyses by combustion support the reszdts of Smith on the solubility of graphite near the eutectoid temperature. Combination of these combustion and internal friction analyses determines In a, (at 0.01 wt pct) = 24,000/RT - 12.72, where a, is the activtity relative to graphite in ferrite at fixed cornposition. The same specimens were used to determine the solubility of self-stressed cementite precipitates. The results indicate solubilities of 6.3, 23.2, and 68 pprn carbon by wt at respectively 400°, 500". and 600°C. The once large discrepancy between the cementite solubility determined by internal frictiori and that calculated from flee energy data has been almost completely resolved. A recent study1 (hereafter designated I) on the solubility of cementite in a iron did not fully resolve the disagreement among previous data. The remaining disagreement is illustrated by the phase diagram in Fig. L The data of I are represented by the line labeled "stress-free" cementite. They determine a heat of solution of cementite of (14.8 * 0.2) kcal per mole which contrasts with the (20 * 1) kcal per mole derived from Smith's graphite solubility2 and the formation energy of cementite.3 Toward resolving this disagreement we have obtained new data on the solubilities of graphite and cementite. METHODS As in I the Snoek peak in the internal friction spectrum was used to measure the concentration of carbon dissolved in ferrite. This method relies on the relation C=kQ-1 [1] in which C is the concentration of dissolved carbon, Q-I is the Snoek peak height, and k is a proportionality factor which is a function of the peak temperature, polycrystalline texture, and other parameters characteristic of the ferrite lattice. To determine true heats of solution via Eq. [1], it is necessary to establish that k is independent of the temperature from which the specimen is quenched. Some evidence on this point is contained in a separate report.* Additional evidence is shown by the data points in Fig. 1. These represent the Snoek peaks of two specimens carburized to about 10 ppm C, copper plated, and quenched first from 888º then from 588°C. The copper plate was removed before each Snoek peak measurement. These data show that there is no detectable dependence of k on quenching temperature. The solubility of graphite was determined by repeatedly carburizing various specimens of iron wire with gas mixtures of known carbon activity relative to graphite. To cover a wide temperature range within the a phase boundaries it is desirable to use as low a carbon concentration as is compatible with reasonable precision. With the present internal friction apparatus the best compromise of these desires is a concentration near 10 wt ppm. The dashed line in Fig. 1 was used to approximate the activity of carbon* for
