FOR many years the Homestake Mining Co. has devoted serious attention to the elimination of accidents, and ground is steadily being gained in this direction. In accident prevention work it is line-plunging with perfect teamwork and not the spectacular forward pass that brings progress toward the goal. In both surface plants and under- ground workings we regard "good housekeeping" as a first requisite for safety as well as efficiency. Under this term are included all types of safety guards and protective devices as well as cleanliness and orderliness it working places. Perhaps the most important factor in safety work is to arouse and maintain employee interest. The general morale and contentment of employees is of particular importance.

Edward Keller, Baltimore, Md. (communication to the Secretary): When, at the New Pork meeting, February, 1899, Mr. Douglas gave an abstract of his highly interesting paper on the Copper Queen mine, he invited the members of the Institute, in his usual progressive spirit, to make a full scientific investigation of the region of that mine during the prospective excursion to Bisbee, Arizona. I volunteered to examine some of the metallurgical processes and products of the works, and obtained from Mr. Douglas a valuable series of samples. Upon the issue of his paper, however, I found that he had already a considerable volume of analyses of those products, and that little was left for me to do in that respect, except to duplicate his results, the importance of which work would not have been commensurate to the time and labor involved. I selected, therefore, only some points which he had not made entirely clear, or concerning which I was skeptical. The details of most of my work will appear in a future paper. From Mr. Douglas's figures I have calculated the values for the elimination of impurities in the so-called Leghorn converter, introduced by him at the Copper Queen works, and have found them to be as follows: Percentage of Elimination of Impurities in Pour Blows of a Converter. THIS paper is the third of a series treating of the relations of ores of the metals to igneous rocks. The first1 outlined the general problem; the second2 proposed a classification of lode ores, and showed how the distribution of the deposits is in a certain measure controlled by the contour of the roof of the parent batholith. A number of mining districts were discussed, the examples being selected chiefly from group 2 of the classification. The proposed classification of lode deposits, briefly stated, is as follows: 1. Cryptobatholithic: near hidden batholiths which have not yet been exhumed by erosion. 2. Acrobatholithic: in and near cupolas or domes of batholiths-the high points of larger underlying masses. 3. Epibatholithic: on batholiths, near their rims, but below eroded cupolas, or below the highest points of the roofs. 4. Embatholithic: among closely-spaced outcrops which probably are parts of a single batholith. The outcrops of invaded rocks predominate. 5. Endobatholithic: in and near roof pendants of large batholiths. The invading rocks predominate. 6. Hypobatholithic: in deeply-eroded batholiths, where even roof pendants, have been -eroded. Deposits of certain metals on the roofs of the batholiths are much more numerous in some positions than deposits of other metals, and the horizontal zonal arrangements of lodes of different metals are shown characteristically only in certain groups. In a large measure, also, the character of the fracturing and metallization is determined by, the-position on the roof, of the batholith.

Recently, Gilvarry1,2 has given a rigorous derivation of the proper distribution function for fragment size in single fracture, based on a closely defined physical model and deduced strictly by the laws of probability. The physical point of departure is Griffith's theory of brittle strength, identifying sub-microscopic flaws as the cause of the low strength of a solid in comparison with values implied by cohesive energies. Gilvarry and Bergstrom,4-7 and Gilvarry8 have compared the predictions of the theory with experiment, and have found excellent agreement, in general. The purpose of this communication is to sketch the extension of the theory to the case of comminution, and to indicate the applications to some examples in nature. The present treatment represents an amplification of a brief discussion appearing elsewhere. 9 Although the basic ideas of the Griffith theory are perfectly general for rupture of brittle solids, it was originally formulated with very brittle materials such as glass in mind. Moreover, Griffith's original experimental work was carried out on glass specimens. Recently, however, the theory has been extended by race" to apply directly to rocks. This extension makes the theory immediately applicable to the materials generally of interest from the standpoint of comminution. GENERAL CASE To obtain the distribution function for fragment size in single fracture, three assumptions are made, that: 1) Fracture proceeds by activation of preex-istent Griffith flaws in the volume, faces, and edges of a fragment; 2) the distributions of flaws of these three types are independent of each other; and 3) activated flaws of a particular type are distributed at random, individually and collectively, in the sense of Fry.11 The last assumption implies that each distribution is separately of Poisson type.

DURING the course of an investigation of the effects of various starch products on hematite and quartz in regard to their separation by' flotation, it was found that whereas most starches flocculated suspensions of hematite in water, they did not flocculate similar suspensions of quartz. However, a derivative of whole corn starch containing approximately one tenth aminoethyl group (--CH2CH2NH2) per glucose unit proved to be an exception. This aminoethyl starch was a very good flocculant for both hematite and quartz, and also possessed the property of depressing both minerals in cationic flotation tests. In view of the widespread use of starch as a flocculating agent of solids in tailing water, pulps, and for coal slimes, ore and various other purposes in sulphide and nonsulphide flotation, attention is called to the effective surface activity of aminoethyl starch in flocculating suspensions of the two minerals investigated. Test Materials The starch products employed included Globe Pearl starch No. 144 and fresh aminoethyl starch, both supplied by the Corn Products Refining Co. Dr. A. L. Elder[4] has kindly furnished a description The minerals used in the various tests are listed in Table I. Their specific surfaces were determined by the air permeability method, which gave results reproducible to within plus or minus 3 pct. Surface areas obtained by krypton adsorption were greater than the air permeability values by a factor of 2.0 for quartz and 62.4 for hematite. Starch Adsorption on Mineral Surfaces Starch adsorption data were obtained by agitating for 1 hr measured volumes of neutral starch solutions of known concentrations with weighed quantities of finely divided mineral of measured specific surface. The mineral then was separated from the pulp liquor by centrifugation and the residual starch content determined by chemical analysis. The analytical procedure consisted of oxidizing the starch with an excess of dichromate in acid medium at elevated temperature and titrating the excess dichromate by the ferrous ammonium sulphate-potassium permanganate method. Analytical results were reproducible to within less than 1 pct. Adsorption data obtained in unbuffered solutions near the neutral point are plotted in Fig. 1. The adsorption on either mineral was far greater for the aminoethyl starch than for the Pearl starch. Flocculation The degree of flocculation was determined for a given pulp by measuring the time required for the supernatant liquid to reach a certain degree of clarity. This was accomplished by passing a standard light beam through the pulp, contained in a glass settling tube, and measuring the time required after agitation ceased for the intensity of the transmitted beam to reach a predetermined value. Starch reagent was added to each pulp in small uniform increments, and the settling time was determined after each such addition. Increase in pulp liquor volume due to the added starch reagent was ignored in these tests. Pulps were maintained at or near neutrality.

Considerable attention has been directed in recent years to methods of electric prospecting other than the conventional direct-current techniques. It has been extensively recognized that electrical data of a more general nature than that possible by direct-current methods might be useful in geophysical studies. To this end, a number of different types of electric currents have been employed, such as single-frequency alternating currents, square-topped periodic current waves,4 periodic surges of a less specific nature,s and suddenly applied direct current.1,2 Yet, to the author's knowledge, little analysis of these different types of driving currents has been made from the standpoint of network theory to determine just what typc of currents would give the most useful data, and, most important of all, to determine the relation of the data taken by one method to those of another. Without touching on the actual theoretical problem of how currents flow in the earth under specified boundary conditions, some very useful information can be obtained from the study of the fundamental integral equations of electrical networks, throwing light on the problem not ordinarily appreciated by the field worker. Some manipulation of the standard network equations will be made, with the sole purpose in mind of developing expressions leading to practical results. Suppose that four points in the earth have been located and it is wished to obtain the most useful type of electrical data by inserting current into two of them and measuring the potential developed between the other two. The first problem that arises is that of which pair of the four shall be chosen as current grounds. In the direct-current case, where only steady potentials are measured, the selection is of little consequence, but as soon as currents varying with time are used at the current grounds, a new effeet arises. The fact that a varying current is flowing in the current-carrying conductor between the current grounds means that magnetic and electric fields varying with time will be produced

Measurements have been made of the internal energy of deformation in a Cu-A1 alloy and a Cu-Zn alloy as the deference between the work and the released heat. The method required the rapid compression of samples to reduce thermal interactions. The rate of energy storage is low initially but then becomes almost linear with strain. Both alloys stored about 60 cal per mole at a strain of 0.4 in the recrystallized condition. The fractional rate of storage increases at low strains reaching about 0.25 at a strain of 0.15 and then decreases slowly with increasing strains. As do pure metals, these alloys release appreciable energy immediately following deformation; in contrast with pure metals, however, the release continued for extended periods of time. This energy release is somewhat sensitive to the amount of deformation, the deformation temperature, and prior thermal & eatment. It is believed that this release is a composite of that observed in pure metals which has been attributed to dislocations and that due to the motion of vacancies which produces increased short-range order. IT is expected that changes brought about by deformation of a pure metal can be understood in terms of the three defects—dislocations, vacancies, and interstitials—along with the interactions possible between these defects. Frequently stacking faults are created and must also be considered. 1t is not immediately clear whether or not the stress fields which are created should be regarded as independent of dislocations. For alloys there is the important additional effect of atomic configuration, for example short-range order, which must also be considered and will, in general, interact with each of the above defects. While it is true that a complete understanding of pure metals is not yet possible, it would seem very valuable to establish the similarities and differences between pure metals and alloys. Such knowledge could contribute to the understanding of both. A study of the changes in internal energy resulting from deformation of two alloys is reported here. Although some information has been available for alloys almost as long as for pure metals, the volume of work has been substantially less. Sato' and Quinney and Taylor' were responsible for the earlier work, both using brass and annealing calorimetry. tizhnova' studied stored energy in Cu-Ni alloys by a method somewhat similar to the one reported here. Bever and his co-workers have made extensive studies of Au-Ag alloys4'5 and more recently CU-AU'U' using solution calorimetry. Clarebrough et a1.' have recently studied brass using annealing calorimetry. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The present results were obtained by the rapid, adiabatic compression of a sample about 1/4 in, diam by 1/2 in. long between two tungsten carbide hammers. A vacuum provided thermal isolation and oil provided effective lubrication between the sample and hammers. The increase in internal energy is the difference between the mechanical energy and the heat liberated within the sample. The mechanical energy was determined from the velocity of the hammers (calculated from the height through which the hammers traveled) and was essentially constant for each deformation cycle. The heat was determined from the temperature increase of the sample which was measured by an embedded thermocouple. Specific heat data were calculated from Neumann's rule using tabulated data for pure metals.9 Since the fraction of the energy which is stored is large compared to that for pure metals, specific heat data of high accuracy are not required. Successive increments of deformation were carried out by repeating the procedure, the limit being determined mostly by the decreasing accuracy caused by the increasing corrections and the decreasing storage of energy. About five cycles were used to give a true strain of about 0.5 while the time interval between cycles was 1 to 2hr.

Since 1915 many papers and books have covered industrial applications of X-rays from various angles. Two of the more recent are a paper by Fink and Archer, which describes in detail the technique of radiography, and a paper by Clark2, which embraces the whole field of X-ray metallogmphy. This paper, therefore, is confined to work of the X-ray Laboratory of the Western Electric Co., which naturally divides into two categories: radiography and diffraction patterns of various types. Radiography Radiography is the field in which the application of X-rays has had most general appeal among the industries which produce or use metals and alloys. Equipment permitting the examination of heavy sections of metals less permeable than aluminum or other light alloys requires apparatus capable of generating hard X-rays over a considerable period of time. The equipment used in the work presented in this paper is practically identical with that described by Fink and Archer in their paper on radiography in industry and is easily capable of penetrating 1/8 in. of lead. Radiography is used in two major groups of problems: (1) in the development of cquipment and tools and (2) in studies of materials. So far there has been no instance in which the use of radiography for routine inspection is justified. This is partly due to the fact that the manufacture of telephone apparatus involves the production of many identical parts by standardized procedures and equipment that has had development and trial before being put on a regular production basis. It is during this stage of development of equipment and tools that radiography has been used to particular advantage.

The suggestion, which appears to find increasing favor, that the elementary composition of coals should be used as the basis of their classification, makes it important that our methods of expressing this elementary composition should be refined. It is doubtful whether many published ultimate analyses of coals are accurate within 1 per cent. carbon. Many are probably as much as 3 or 2 per cent. in error in carbon. It is, perhaps, not always realized that the extreme variation in carbon content over the range of bituminous coals is but 16 per cent. An error of 1 per cent. in carbon on analysis corresponds therefore with one-sixteenth of the whole range, an amount which is unjustifiable even for the application to commercial needs of a system of classification based on ultimate analysis. For the purposes of scientific research such limited accuracy is of little value. The object of this paper is to examine one important source of error in ultimate analysis, that due to the occurrence in coal of inorganic material, and to emphasize the need for the quantitative measurements (of carbon more particularly) on coals to be rendered independent of their contents of such material. Adventitious Mineral Matter When a determination of calorific value, for example, is made upon a coal, it is customary to correct the measured value with respect to the ash left by the coal on incineration, recording the result as being on an "ash-free basis." It is desirable, before discussing the adequacy of the correction thus made, to demonstrate its validity, which turns on whether the ash is present as an adventitious impurity in the coal and forms no part of the coal substance itself. The inorganic matter associated with coal has originated in several ways1: 1. The "inherent" inorganic materials, occurring as constituents of the plants from which the coal-forming deposits were derived.

Worldwide manpower utilization reached a new high at 10,482 professional man-months and expenditures increased to $19.9 million for mining geophysical activity during 1965. This is up from 9323 man-months and $14.5 million in 1964. Worldwide geophysical activity measured in percent distribution of the total manpower utilization and expenditures is presented in the accompanying Figs. 1 and 2. In terms of the total manpower utilization, ground surveys accounted for 61%, airborne surveys 18%, and mining geophysical research activity 21%. For expenditures, the breakdown was ground surveys, 49%; airborne surveys, 3901o; and research, 12%. Industry was responsible in general for 74% of the manpower utilization and 80% of the expenditures. Manpower costs in 1965 averaged $1900 per professional man-month.

MR. CHAIRMAN: Congratulations! Your four-ring milling show this year was a dandy. It cleared our minds, for a few hours at least, of what Hitler, Hirohito, the New Deal, and the tribe in the Treasury are trying to do to strangle American enterprise. We mustn't forget this, but it's a relief to get our thoughts away from it occasionally. GRINDING-There was a further contribution to the excellent work that the Allis-Chalmers laboratory staff has been doing for the grinding fraternity in compiling-and publishing-a carefully quantitative list of comparative resistances of ores and other materials to comminution (T.P. 1579, Bond-Maxson). A diagnostic accuracy of ± 10 per cent was claimed for estimates based on these figures. Are they really that good? How about some of you men in the field writing M&M about it?

The Bradford Oil District lies in the northern part of McKean County, Pa., and the southern part of Cattaraugus County, N. Y. Although petroleum was first found in the producing sand in 1871, it was not until the early part of the year 1875 that a productive horizon was acknowledged to exist, even by those most largely interested in the production of the crude oil. It has been reported to me that the first well drilled in the valley of the Tuneangewant Creek (commonly called Tuna Creek) was drilled by F. E. Dean and brothers in 1865. This well was located on the Shepherd farm, near the present site of Custer City. One hundred and sixty feet of drive pipe was used, and the hole was drilled to the depth of 900 feet. The producing sand at Custer City is found about 1130 feet below the level of the railroad track. The Shepherd farm well was therefore abandoned over 200 feet above the top of the oil sand. The next well was drilled by the Dean brothers on the Clark farm at Tarport. Drilling was stopped at a depth of 605 feet, or over 400 feet above the top of the oil sand. In the year 1862 the old Bradford well, since known as the Barnsdall well, was drilled to a depth of 200 feet with a spring pole, and then abandoned. In the spring of 1866 the citizens of the village of Bradford concluded to club together and sink the Barnsdall well deeper. It was drilled to a total depth of 875 feet, or to within 150 feet of the Bradford producing sand. All of these wells were drilled with the expectation of finding the Venango County oil, and at

IN the process employed by Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. for the production of metallic nickel, a sul-fide concentrate is leached with ammonia and air under pressure. Following the removal of iron, copper, and other impurities, there remains a purified solution having the following analysis: 40 to 50 g per liter Ni, 200 to 400 g per liter (NH4)2 SO 4, and 20 to 30 g per liter NH3. Metallic nickel is reduced from this solution by hydrogen under pressure at 300' to 350°F in mechanically agitated autoclaves. A catalyst, ferrous sulfate, is required to initiate the first reduction. After the reduction, the depleted solution is discharged, leaving the metallic nickel in the autoclave. The nickel produced, being in a finely divided form, is used as a catalyst for the reduction of the next batch of solution. Upon repeated use the metallic nickel particles increase in size and become more compact, resulting in the production of a powder with higher apparent density. For this reason, each reduction is termed densification. Finally, when the burden of metal powder in the autoclave becomes too great to obtain effective agitation, both powder and depleted solution are discharged. The autoclave is then filled with fresh solution, ferrous sulfate catalyst added as before, and a new cycle started. The operation is described in earlier publications.1-6 A comprehensive historical review of the reduction of metals from solutions in general was given in a paper by Schaufelberger.7 The experimental data presented in this paper were taken from the work done in the Research Laboratory of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. in Ottawa during the development of the process in 1951 and 1952. The results of the work were tested on a pilot plant scale in Ottawa in the period 1952 to 1953. Following laboratory and the pilot plant studies a commercial process has operated successfully since 1954 in the Nickel Refinery of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. General Experimental Technique The experiments were carried out in a stainless steel, 1-gallon, agitated autoclave designed and manufactured by Autoclave Engineers Inc. The inside dimensions of the vessel were 5 in. diam and 12 in. depth. AT the U. S. Gypsum Co. mine in Oakfield, N. Y., a flat-lying vein of rock gypsum is mined by the room and pillar method. Averaging only 4 ft thick, this vein is 1200 to 6000 ft in mineable width and many miles in length. Overlying the vein throughout the mine is a 2-ft thickness of distintegrated gypseous shale and fractured limestone which parts easily, falling with little or no warning. This shale, known as ash, varies in thickness from less than an inch to more than a foot. Small veinlets of selenite cut this shaley material, which breaks around timber props. The 18-in. limestone over-lying the ash is fractured vertically into blocks of varying size and will fail if any but the shortest unsupported spans are permitted. Above these two members is a thick layer of competent limestone.

A series of X ray experiments conducted by G. I. Taylor' in 1927 and later substantiated in 1939 by J. A. Collins2 both on axially strained aluminum single crystals, revealed evidence that during single slip crystallite rotation occurs in such a manner that " all parts of the material rotated about the transverse direction in the plane of slip."l The actual method of preparing the specimens for X ray examination is not discussed in detail by Taylor except to say that "this specimen was cut parallel to the plane of slip, as calculated from measurements of marks in the surface of the specimen. It was ground and etched till the effect of the new cuts had disappeared. This was verified by applying the same treatment to an un-distorted specimen. The X ray reflectionsl in this case were perfect ones."' Collins, on the other hand, cut his crystals in a mechanical shaper. These surfaces were polished on No. 1, No. 1/0, No. 2/0 and No. 3/0 papers and on a broadcloth lap using No. 600 alundum as a polishing medium. "Finally, the surface was deeply etched in Tucker's reagent. An unde-formed crystal was prepared in the manner described and X rayed to determine whether or not the machining and polishing operations had produced any strain or distortion in the crystal. The Laue spots all seem to be sharp, free from tails and streaks indicating no detectable strains had been introduced in the crystals." Taylor's X ray technique involved the use of "homogeneous X rays from an iron anti-cathode"; whereas Collins used Ka radiation of copper at 31kv and 20 milliamperes. Glancing angle X ray photograms were taken (1) with the axis of rotation of the spectrometer table in the plane of slip and at right angles to the slip direction, and (2) with the axis of the spectrometer table lying along the slip direction. However, eight minute exposures were used in each case and the angle setting of the spectrometer table was increased by one degree for each exposure. SELECTION of an alloy steel for a heat-treated article has been facilitated by methods for the calculation of hardenability,1 as-quenched hardness,2,3 and tempered tensile strength.4 Ductility and toughness may also be estimated if the steel is completely hardened on quenching,5,6 and the present study was carried out in order to develop a basis for estimating the Izod impact strength of partially hardened steel. The investigation was directed toward the prediction of Izod impact strength in steels of normal commercial quality without consideration of special compositions or heat-treatments that might produce abnormal brittleness. It was found that Izod impact strength of alloy steel is controlled by hardness, degree of hardening on quenching, and grain size. In fine-grained steels the impact strength for any given degree of hardening is inversely proportional to the tempered Rockwell C hardness, and the relation of impact strength to hardness is lowered by incomplete hardening. Calculation of the tensile strength and impact strength of heat-treating steels has shown that, except at very high strengths, tensile strength is raised by alloys without loss of impact strength whereas the tensile strength gained by higher carbon contents tends to be accompanied by a disproportionate loss of toughness. Plain carbon steels give relatively low and unpredictable impact strength. The calculation is sufficiently accurate to be helpful in the selection of alloy steel, and common grades of alloy steel have been evaluated with respect to combinations of tensile strength and impact strength attainable after heat-treatment in sections from I to 4 in. in diameter. PROCEDURE The study of the relation of hardness to impact strength was based on test data derived from 24 heats from four producers. The steels included the following SAE and AISI compositions: 1020, 1o30, 1040, 1340, 3310, 3316, 4320, 4330, 4340, 8620, 8630, 8640, 8720, 8730, 8740, 9310, 9317, 9440, 9917 and three high-alloy chromium-nickel-molybdenum steels. As far as is known, the steels tested were of normal commercial quality. They were supplied in 4-in. sections, which were forged to smaller sizes, prenormalized, and machined to final dimensions. Heat-treatment was carried out by heating to the usual austenitizing temperature for the grade of steel, holding for one hour per inch of thickness and quenching in still oil at room temperature. Previous work had indicated that this quenching treatment approximates a severity of H = 0.35. The bars were tempered as follows: ½ in., I in., and I 5/8 in., 2 hr; 2 ½ in., 3 hr; 4 in., 5 hr. To check this unexpected result, a wide variety of commercial silvers were heated in hydrogen at 850°C. Only a few of the materials developed blisters, the most severe of which is the tube pictured in Fig. I. The microstructure of a cross section of the tube is shown in Fig. 2. The embrit-tlernent is extremely severe at the edge; the blisters result from the severe deformation of the surface material by large under- lying gas pockets.
