INTRODUCTION Three major plant processes control the operation of an uranium in-situ mining plant. The three pro- cesses can be categorized under the headings termed - loading, elution, and precipitation. All other plant processes can be subcategorized under the three. In summary, the major plant processes in an in- situ mining plant are: 1. Loading - The pregnant lixiviant from the production wells flows through anion exchange resin. The loading of the uranium on the resin is controlled by various factors, such as ionic strength, valence, functional groups, etc. 2. Elution - The uranium-loaded resin is eluted or regenerated by a high ionic strength solution. The effluent from this process is de- fined as the pregnant eluate. 3 . Precipitation - The pregnant eluate is chemically treated to attain the ideal conditions for the selective precipitation of uranium. Hydrogen peroxide is an ideal precipitating agent under URI conditions. This paper will focus on two of the major processes: Elution and Precipitation. For the most part this relatively young industry has grasped the theory of liquids in continuous flow for the operation of the plant processes. Likewise, URI initially operated the two processes of interest with the continuous flow concept. Through laboratory experiments, URI has abandoned the flow concept and operates the eluting and precipitating stages with the concept of "batch" processes, whereby only one container, filled to a specified liquid level, is chemically processed. In the proceeding sections, each of the two pro- cesses will be discussed in detail, from their original concept to the present operation. Only minor modifications were made to the existing circuits for the conversion with results revealing a greater level of efficiency. ELUTION The elution of the loaded anion exchange resin can be achieved by different high ionic strength solutions. The selection of constituents is dependent on both chemical and economic considerations (i .e., efficiency and operating/restoration factors). The regenerant presently used is a pH 9.5 solution containing 7.5% NaCl and a mixture of Na2C03/NaHC03. expressed as 2.5% NaHC03.

If we assume that testing of the model started at time C, that time t2 was the instant at which the elastic limit of the material was passed at the points of the maximum stress, and that at time t3 the failure of the model was completed as shown in the typical photograph (Fig. 1), then actually the photograph shows the final results of what took place between time t2 and t3. By the principle of similitude all conclusions drawn from the behavior of the model were applicable and valid for actual mine roofs up to the time t, after time t, motions and friction came into play during the destruction of the model. The events between t2 and t3 and the photograph itself are not representative of the events expected in an actual mine roof unless corrections imposed by the principle of similitude are made.

Petroleum has been known in Japan since at least 668 A. D., for a picture shows the presentation, during that year, to the Emperor Tenchi (Tenji) of "burning water" and ('burning earth" by his subjects from Echigo Province, which today is the largest producer of petroleum in Japan. The burning water was doubtless petroleum and the burning earth either bituminous shale or oil-soaked earth or rock from near the oil seepages. The early methods of getting the oil were simple and similar to methods used today in Japan and in China. Where the seepages occurred, trenches or shallow wells were dug along the seepages and allowed to fill with oil, which was then bailed out; in some cases, they filled with oil and water and overflowed. During the 300 years following 1500 A. D., the use of petroleum in Echigo Province seems to have increased considerably, as compared with earlier centuries, and records show that in 1818 the depth of the wells had been greatly increased. Doubtless, they passed through the seepages and tapped the shallow oil-bearing strata; probably some of these deeper wells were dug before that time. The real value of petroleum was not recognized until early in the Meiji era, which began in 1868, when the Japanese learned that the kerosene that was being imported was derived from petroleum. Guided solely by information obtained from books, they refined the oil and increased the depth of their wells in order to increase the production. The deepest well, dug by hand, about this time was 894 ft.' (273 m.) and by 1874 the recorded production reached 3499 barrels. In 1876, Benjamin Smith Lyman prepared geological maps of the Echigo oil field, which were the first of such geological maps made in Japan, and based on these a more enlightened development of the oil fields began; the Japanese, however, still dug the wells by hand. Toward the end of the '80s) an American well-drilling outfit was secured, but the efforts to use it failed from lack of experience by the operators. The equilibrium between Ir-Fe or Rh-Fe alloys, iron oxide (wüstite or magnetite), and CO2-CO atmospheres has been determined at 1200°C. The data are used to derive the activities in these binary solid solutions. Both systems show negative deviations from Raoult's law. The lattice parameters are given for the investigated Ir-Fe and Rh-Fe alloys. IRIDIUM and iron form a continuous series of fcc solid solutions at elevated temperatures.' Rhodium-rich Rh- Fe alloys have fcc structure.' In the medium concentration range an ordered bcc phase is stable at temperatures up to about 1300°C. Phase relations in iron-rich alloys are not well-known. No thermody-namic data are available for these alloys. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental method used was to measure the equilibria between a gas phase of known CO2/C0 ratio, the alloy, and iron oxide (wüstite or magnetite). In one series of experiments the alloys of known composition were heated in CO 2-CO gas mixtures. After treatment (usually 1 day) the sample was quenched to room temperature and its surface examined visually to determine whether an oxide tarnish had formed. The procedure was repeated at slightly higher CO 2/CO ratios until the CO 2/CO ratio of incipient oxidation was found. Subsequently, the CO 2/C0 ratio was lowered again in small increments until the tarnish was reduced. In other experiments mixtures of alloy and iron oxide powders were pressed into pellets and equilibrated with the CO2-CO gas phase. In order to ensure that equilibrium was attained, two specimens with different starting iron content were heated side by side; in most cases, equilibrium was approached in one pellet by reduction of iron oxide and in the other pellet by oxidation of metallic iron. The sample was quenched to room temperature, and the composition of the equilibrated alloy was determined by X-ray measurements of lattice parameters and comparison of these values with calibration curves obtained from alloys of known composition. The oxides present in the specimens were identified by comparison of their diffraction patterns with those in the ASTM Card File. It may be expected from the noble character of iridium and rhodium that no appreciable amount of iridium or rhodium is dissolved in wiistite and magnetite under the present experimental conditions. The activity of iron in the alloy is then equal to that established in the iron oxide by the COrCO atmosphere. An investigation of the Ti-Cr system has shown the presence of a complete series of solid solutions in the ß phase, with a minimum in the solid us near 50 pct Cr. An intermetallic compound, TiCr2, forms during cooling from the ß solid solution. There is a eutectoid reaction at the low chromium side of the system. IN view of the recognition of the potentialities of titanium and its alloys as important structural materials there has arisen a need for a systematic investigation of various titanium binary diagrams. Of these, the Ti-Cr system was of particular interest because of the improved properties imparted to titanium by small chromium additions. A literature survey disclosed a partial constitution diagram that had been suggested by Vogel and Wenderott,¹ This diagram, shown in Fig. 1, is the result of work done on the Fe-Cr-Ti ternary system. Alloys containing less than 43 pct Cr were not investigated. In addition to this, a study of alloys in the Ti-Cr system was reported by McPherson and Fontana.² Adenstedt3 furnished a number of dilato-meter curves obtained from specimens containing 5, 10, and 15 pct Cr. Very recently, McQuillan4 submitted a proposed diagram covering the complete range of compositions between titanium and chromium. This diagram was in general agreement with the one described here. Experimental Procedure Sponge titanium (99.7 pct) and electrolytic chromium (Bureau of Mines analysis: 99.03 pct Cr, 0.40 pct Fe, 0.53 pct O2) were used for the initial determination of the system. Subsequent refinement of points, particularly for the low chromium side of the diagram, was accomplished by using iodide titanium and high purity chromium (National Research Corp. analysis: 0.050 pct C, 0.045 pct O2). The Ti-Cr alloys were prepared by melting 25 g charges in an enclosed, water-cooled copper crucible using a movable tungsten electrode. The atmosphere was helium, prepurified by first passing it through a drying agent and then through sponge titanium heated to 850°C. Particular care was taken to avoid any large scale segregation resulting from insufficient mixing of the components. Each charge was melted and kept molten for approximately 1 min, allowed to cool, inverted, remelted, and kept molten for an additional minute. In order to ascertain the amount of impurity pickup (oxygen and nitrogen) during the melting procedure, three iodide titanium specimens were melted in sequence and then checked for increased hardness. The specimens in the as-cast condition showed a relatively large hardness increase over the hardness of the as-received iodide titanium. The scattering on these readings was large. However, after the specimens had been homogenized at 840 °C for 2 hr and slowly cooled, the measured increase in hardness over the as-received titanium was small with a corresponding decrease in scatter. The reason for this hardness change is that in heat treating these specimens below the transformation temperature (885°C) there was a conversion from the as-cast structure to the more nearly equilibrium structure of the annealed specimen. The alloys were analyzed for chromium content and although the actual percentage was invariably low the deviation from the nominal composition never exceeded 0.6 pct Cr.

Batch grinding tests at short times were made in a laboratory rod mill with 10 x 14 mesh quartzite in corn syrup-water mixtures of varying viscosity. The weight fraction broken and size modulus were found to be independent of viscosity up to 20 cp, but at higher viscosities breakage of the feed decreased while the size modulus increased. The mechanisms of the effect of viscosity are discussed on the basis of particle dynamics. The effect of viscosity of the suspending medium on grinding has not been accorded much attention, although both wet and dry grinding are used in bene-ficiation processes and the viscosities of water and air differ greatly. schweyerl investigated the rates of grinding of quartzite in a pebble mill with air, water and glycerol as the suspending media and found the rate in terms of new surface developed per thousand revolutions of the mill to be constant and dependent on viscosity up to 20,000 rev, but to decrease and become independent of viscosity for longer grinding times. Based on considerations of the drag forces exerted on suspended particles and on the grinding media under turbulent and laminar flow conditions, viscosity can be expected to inhibit the rate of grinding in a given system as it changes the flow conditions from turbulent to laminar. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of viscosity of the suspending fluid in the batch grinding of a homogeneous feed of uniform size for short residence times, a region of more practical interest than the long times investigated by Schweyer. In actual grinding operations, the viscosity of the fluid does not change, but the consistency (apparent viscosity) of the pulp increases with additions of fines. In this study the consistency of the pulp was not measured because it was thought that the grinding times were too short to alter the apparent viscosity appreciably.* *Minus 200 mesh quartz at 65% solids has an apparent viscosity of about 25 cp as measured by a simple consistometer. For the purposes of this study, the effect of viscosity on grinding can be shown sufficiently well on the basis of the cumulative weight fraction finer than the feed size at any time, and the size modulus, ku, of the finer than feed sizes. The parameter, ku, is obtained from a form of the Gaudin-Schuhmann equation. METHOD AND MATERIAL The grinding tests were accomplished in a laboratory rod mill 10-1/2 in. long and 8 in. bore with a 20-lb rod charge consisting of two 1-in., eight 3/4-in., eight 1/2-in., and eight 1/4-in. diam rods. The mill speed was 43.2 rpm. Charges of 400 g 10 x 14 mesh Wisconsin quartzite** were ground for times of 60, **Courtesy of Minnesota Mining and Mfg. Co. 120, 180 and 240 sec in 500 cc of fluid made up of corn syrup and water in measured proportions. The temperature of the pulp was measured immediately upon completion of grinding, and the size distribution of the quartzite was determined by a wash-wet-dry screening technique. Corn syrup was chosen because of its high viscosity and ideal viscous behavior, and also because its density is not greatly different from that of water. The viscosity of each fluid mixture was measured with an Ostwald viscometer at 25 C. and a correction was made for the temperature of the pulp according to tabulated values for sucrose solutions. The density differences were so small that they probably did not significantly affect breakage. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The conditions of the grinding tests, computed viscosities, weight fractions finer than the feed size and values of a and ku are listed in Table I. The values of a and ku were taken from the linear portions of the log-log plots of cumulative weight fraction finer vs size for the various grinding times. The plots for tests in fluids of average viscosity 8.6 cp are shown in Fig. 1. In general all of the sets of curves were linear throughout most of the size

OUTBURSTS in coal mines have contributed greatly to the hazard of mining operations in localities in which they occur. They have been responsible for many casualties and fatalities and much property damage. An excellent review and symposium on the subject appeared recently1. From a study of the papers included in this symposium, and other litera-ture on this subject2, the following conclusions or statements seem justified: 1. Outbursts are more likely to occur in deep mines; that is, where the coal seam being mined has considerable overburden. 2. Outbursts usually occur when hard, dense, nonfractured coal is being mined. It is believed that in most cases a fault or a pocket of friable or soft or pulverized coal existed some distance behind the dense coal at the time of the outburst. 3. The outburst involves a rending or pushing of the solid material of the coal face, the roof, or the floor outwards and often is accompanied by the discharge of large quantities of very fine coal. 4. Drill holes or borings into the coal ahead of the workings have failed to yield information either from evidence of increased gas pressure or increased gas flow that makes possible the prediction of outbursts. 5. Mines in which outbursts occur are usually considered "nongassy," or only very slightly "gassy"; yet large volumes of gas may be produced at the time of the outburst. Despite the varied conditions and varied locations in which outbursts have occurred, the foregoing general statements appear to be applicable in whole or in part to all the recorded cases. These observations there-fore should be significant and any explanation of the mechanism of the phenomena should be consistent with them. The following suggestion seems to be in accord with this requirement, and is offered in the hope that it may assist in the further elucidation of this phenomenon.

The ores mined by the Santa Gertrudis Co. at Pachuca, Mexico, arc mainly silver-bearing; they also yield some gold and carry a little copper. Strong cyanide solutions are used to dissolve the silver and gold, and the mechanical loss of cyanide at the tailings filter has been considerable. Prior to the year 1923, the pulp, after agitation, was given a 35 to 37-min. wash with barren solution in a Butters-type leaf filter; the discharged slime cake was repulped and pumped into eight Merrill self-sluicing slime presses in which the slime was given a further wash with barren solution for 25 to 35 min., followed by a 10-min. water wash. At that time the barren solution titrated around 0.350 per cent. free KCN and 0.500 per cent. total KCN. (Aero brand cyanide is used.) It can readily be seen that a 10-min. water wash would leave considerable cyanide in the filter cake, which of course was a total loss. This averaged 0.522 kg. (1.15 Ib.) KCN per ton of solution. As the daily discharge to the dam was 1600 tons' of slime of a 2:1 ratio of liquid to solid, the value of this mechanical loss of cyanide was an important item and it's recovery held alluring possibilities. Principle of Cyanide-recovery Process As it had acquired the patent rights to theLayng (H. R.) and Halvor-sen (A. L.) processes, also those of Mills (L. D.) and Crowe (T. B.) after considerable experimental work in its own laboratory and at Tonopah, Nev., The Merrill Company of San Francisco early in 1923 notified the Mexican Corporation and compania de Santa Gertrudis of its process for the recovery of cyanide from weak wash solutions, or for the transference of cyanide from a foul mill solution to a clean alkaline solution. This method is known as the Mills-Crowe process, the principle of which is as follows: The solution from which the cyanidc is to be removed is made acid by bringing it into contact with sulfur dioxide (SO2). The acidified solution is the; transferred to a closed tank in which air and solution are brought into intimate contact. The air leaving the tank charged with HCN is then passed to another tank in which it is mixed with an alkaline solution,

A typical example of a piston containing a ferronickel insert is shown in Fig. 1. The high coefficient of expansion of silver made it worthy of consideration, while the small size of the insert would render its use feasible in Germany as an emergency measure. The coefficients of linear expansion of several metals and ailoys are as shown in the table above. Obviously the melting point of the insert must be high enough to prevent it from melting when the light alloy is cast around it. This imposes a lower limit of about 850" C. for the solidus of the silver alloy. Pure silver melts at about 961" C., so that the tolerable depression in the solidus is rather small. To avoid deformation of the insert during use a Brinell hardness number of at least 60 appears necessary.

Known CsCl-type phases in transition metal alloys are shown to be formed preferentially at an electron concentration of approximately 6; a tetragonally distorted version of the CsCl structure is stable at -e/a = 6.5. The relationship of the distortion to electron concentration is verified by experimental data for the quasibinary systems Time ,Os) , Ti(Re,Ir), and Ti(Re,Pt) and the ternary system Ti-Ru-Rh. It was noted some years ago1j2 that the occurrence of CsC1-type ordered structures in equiatomic binary alloys, AB, of transition metals correlates with the location of the component elements in the periodic table. One of the components, A, must be to the left and the other component. B, must be to the right of the chromium group. It was pointed out2 that the CsCl structure does not occur in CrFe. is metastable in VFe,3 and is stable in TiFe up to high temperatures, and that this progressively increasing stability may correspond to an increase in electron transfer between the two components and to a correlated decrease of the magnetic moment associated with the iron atoms. Such a decrease was in fact later demonstrated by Nevitt. 4 The binary CsC1-type phases that are formed by a transition metal with either another transition metal or a lanthanide are listed in Table I. Thirty-three of these phases occur at an average electron concentration (average number of electrons outside of closed shells) of e/a = 6. The five phases that are formed at an electron concentration of e/a = 5.5 appear to be borderline cases. This is suggested for instance by the fact that TiRe is bcc. without any long-range order, while TiTc (at the same electron concentration) has a CsCl ordered structure. Six of the undistorted CsCl phases formed by transition metals with one another have an average electron concentration of e/a = 6. 5. Table I. With the exception of Zr4,Rhs4 and Hf48Rh52. the B component in these phases is a first long-period transition metal, i.e.. iron or cobalt. TiNi. with an electron concentration of e/n = 7, appears to undergo transformation at around room temperature to a more complex ordered struct~re.~ The five other CsCl structures known to occur at e/a = 6.5 have either scandium or a lanthanide metal as the A component; the difference in the elec-tronegativity and in the e/a ratio between the component elements is in these phases very large, A(e/a) - 7, and they may be expected to have a rather strong ionic bond component. Presumably the ionic bond stabilizes the CsCl-type structure at the equiatomic composition and it overrides the electron concentration requirement. When the B element is not from the first long period and the A component is not a rare earth metal. equiatomic (AB) alloys of transition metals with an average electron concentration of e/a = 6.5 in most cases have a crystal structure closely related to the CsC1-type, but slightly distorted tetragonally, Table I. This was first found6 for VRu, NbRu. and TaRu. It was noted6 that the undistorted CsCl structure is also stable in the three systems. but at a lower electron concentration, near e/a = 6. In these systems this requires a deviation from equiatomic stoichiometry. which is otherwise ideally suited for the CsC1-type structure. A similar situation was later found in the Ti-Rh7 and the Ti-Ir systems. 8 The Ti-Rh alloys undergo a second distortion and become orthorhombic when the rhodium content becomes somewhat larger than 50 pct. Sublevel stoping was first developed in the Michigan iron mines many years ago. Since that time this method, and modifications with long hole drilling, have been used in a number of non-ferrous mines and have been described in various papers and articles. With a few exceptions, the operations where sublevel methods have been applied are producers of large daily tonnages from ore bodies of considerable size. In selecting mining methods for small properties or relatively small detached ore bodies, sublevel methods often have been overlooked. The method has been used success- fully in relatively small operations at Copper Canyon, Nevada, and, more recently, in mining small ore bodies at Darwin, Calif. As a result of this experience, we believe that a review of the general procedure, the advantages noted, and the results obtained will be of interest to many operators of relatively small mines.

ComMercial steel sheet is prepared by a combination of hot and cold rolling and annealing. This treatment usually results in more or less pronounced anisotropy. The anisotropy may manifest itself both as preferred orientation and in the manner in which impurities, segregations, and the like, are aligned in the sheet. The type of preferred orientation and the organization of impurities or segregations may affect the elastic moduli, the yield strength, the tensile strength, and almost always the amount of ductility in different directions. In any case, the most important directions concerned in the anisotropy are along the rolling direction, along the width direction, and along the thickness direction. Considerable data exist on the anisot-ropy of sheet steel as demonstrated by conventional tensile tests; however, few attempts have been made to measure the constants of plastic anisotropy and use them to describe the flow of anisotropic sheet under combined stresses. In this paper, evidence is presented indicating that plastic flow in anisotropic sheet can be described by the shear-strain energy flow theory provided that the anisotropy is properly taken into account. Materials Used in the Investigation Table I lists the sheet materials used in this investigation and describes the condition in which materials were tested. Direction, of Tests and Test Methods Two types of tests were run—tensile tests and hydraulic-bulge tests. Characteristic parameters of anisotropy were determined from the tension tests by methods which will be described later. In mining, the process of comminution starts at the pit and ends at the classifiers. The first machine that breaks or comminutes ore is the primary crusher. There are many types of crushers, but the one most commonly used in large tonnage plants is the gyratory so discussion is restricted to this type of machine. See Figure 1. The primary crusher is the most important piece of comminution machinery in the plant because every ton of ore processed by the concentrator must pass through it, as shown in Figure 2. Most plants can operate if a secondary crusher or a mill is shut down, but if the primary crusher stops, the whole concentrator goes down. It is, therefore, important that the machine be able to produce sufficient ore to keep the concentrator running without hesitation. The plant designer first considers the required daily capacity and an estimate of the size of the ore from the pit. To this he adds an availability factor to compensate for delays due to shovels, trucks and rou- [ ] tine maintenance at the crushing station. This factor is based on experience and can be on the order of 75% (1). With these figures, he determines the hourly capacity required of the primary crushing station to keep the concentrator supplied. See Table I.

This paper is devoted chiefly to the coal-fields of the western part of the province of Chili and the eastern part of the province of Shansi; but the outline of this belt will give some idea of the extension of the coal-fields over northeastern China. This part of China is topographically divided into: (1) the mountainous peninsula of eastern Shantung; (2) the coastal plains, extending W. and SW. from the gulf of Pechili; and (3) the mountains and table-lands N. and W. of the coastal plains. The plains extend N. and W. from the gulf to within from 10 to 25 miles of the Great Wall, while their SW. extension covers western Shantung and reaches W. along the Yellow river almost to the southern boundary of Shansi. A line joining the mapped coal-fields, shown in Fig. 1, almost gives the western boundary of the plains; since these areas lie on the border of the plains—except the Tsê Chou field, which is on the table-land, 20 to 25 miles from that border. The coal-fields which have been mapped and investigated by the author are shown in Fig. 1. The one at and around Tongshan is known as the K'ai-p'ing coal-field; the one W. of Peking has been called the Wang-p'ing coal-basin; the one SW. of Pao-ting and N. of Chêng-ting may be called the Lingshan coal-field; and the one at and around Tsê Chou is known as the Tsê Chou coal-field. A LARGE proportion of the steel that is melted and refined in the United States and poured into ingots is made in basic open- hearth furnaces. The capacity of these furnaces varies over a wide range with a large majority falling within limits of 50 to 200 tons (Fig. 1) The two general types of furnace design used are stationary [ ] and tilting furnaces, the former being much more common. The fuel burned in such furnaces is either one of several types of gas, or a liquid fuel such as oil or tar, or a combination of gas and liquid fuel. GENERAL FEATURES OF FURNACE CONSTRUCTION The design of a modern stationary furnace built to burn liquid fuel and with a capacity of 175 tons is shown in Figs. 2 to 4. A new constitutional diagram is presented for the cobalt-rich end of the cobalt-titaniurn system. The modifications result from the presence of a new, intermediate, fcc phase, ?, the existence and homogeneity limits of which were established by metallo-graphic and X-ray studies of alloys containing from about 3 to 30 pct Ti. The precipitation of the ? phase from supersaturated solid solution was studied by hardness and electrical resistivity measzsrements, and two distinct stages in the process were observed. COBALT forms the base for a number of precipitation -hardenable alloy systems which may be divided into two distinct categories of practical interest, a) those hardened by intermetallic compounds and b) those hardened by carbide formation. The precipitation of intermetallic compounds from solid solution in cobalt-rich alloys has, however, received very little attention. Although the phase diagrams for some binary systems capable of precipitation have been determined,' there is an almost complete lack of data on the property changes associated with the precipitation, and even less information on the kinetics of the reactions or morphology of the products. More information is available on the precipitation of carbides because of the practical significance in superalloys. A survey of cobalt binary phase diagrams suggested that the cobalt-titanium alloys might provide interesting and useful precipitation-hardenable alloys. The equilibrium diagram as proposed by Wallbaum2 is shown in Fig. 1. Köster and wagner3 have indicated that the maximum solubility of titanium in cobalt is about 10 pct at the eutectic temperature (1135oC), and this decreases to about 7.2 pct at room temperature. The temperature of the allotropic transformation in cobalt is lowered by the addition of titanium, about 5 pct being sufficient to retain the high-temperature fcc modification to room temperature. Wallbaum and Witte 4,5 have indicated that the precipitating phase in alloys containing up to about 29 pct Ti is Co2Ti, a hexagonal Laves phase of the MgNi, type. With slightly higher titanium contents, they also report a cubic modification of Co2Ti of the MgCu2-type Laves phase. Duwez and Taylor6 confirmed the existence of the hexagonal (MgNi2) modification but not the cubic (MgCuz) modification of Co2Ti and suggested that existence of the cubic form may have resulted from impurities in Wallbaum's alloys. In their work on Laves-type phases, Elliott and Rostoker 7 reported the cubic modification of Co,Ti, but did not confirm the existence of the hexagonal modification. However, Dwight8 in a discussion of the work of Eliott and Rostoker again showed the existence of both modifications of Co2Ti, a result which was confirmed at that time by Elliott and Rostoker. As a result of a study on the iron-cobalt-titanium system, Köster and Gellers suggested the existence of a Co3Ti phase isomorphous with Fe3Ti. Witte and Wallbaum,' however, established the fact that no compound, Fe3Ti, exists in the iron-titanium system, and in a later publication, wallbaum2 stated that Kitster and Geller's reasoning was not valid, and no compound, Co3Ti, exists.
