INTERNAL stress and season cracking in brass have been studied for many years and the technical literature contains many data on various phases of the subject. A résumé of the literature shows certain fairly well established points upon which various authors are mostly agreed: 1. Season cracking is primarily caused by the presence of relatively high internal stresses, or possibly in some cases by external stresses, or both. 2. A specific corrosion is also essential to season cracking: Certain agents, particularly mercurous salts, mercuric salts and ammonia salts; have such a specific corrosive effect. 3. The tendency to season crack under given conditions increases with increasing zinc content, brass containing less than 20 per cent zinc being relatively immune. 4. In alpha brass the season cracks are intercrystalline; in alphabeta brass they lie between the two constituents; and in beta brass they are transcrystalline. 5. The ordinary impurities or added elements in special brasses have little or no effect on the tendency to season crack. 6. Internal stresses can be eliminated, or at least reduced to a safe 'limit by annealing treatments at temperatures that do not produce visible microstructural changes or appreciable softening of the worked brasses. There are, however, some points in connection with the phenomenon of season cracking which have not been thoroughly investigated, or wherein different authors and investigators are not entirely in agreement. The investigations described in this paper were undertaken to determine: 1. The correlation between mercurous nitrate tests and actual season cracking on long-time atmospheric exposure. 2. The quantitative effect of type and degree of drawing operations on the intensity of internal stress and on the tendency to season crack in brass tubes. 3. The possibility of drawing high-brass tubes in such a manner as to prevent the occurrence of harmful stresses rather than to find a remedy for such stresses once having obtained them.

THE need for geophysicists to adopt a uniform mode of expressing the electrical resistivity of geological formations has been stressed by Dr. A. S. Eve.1 The present paper is to emphasize the point he raised, to bring the weight of disinterested authority to bear on the matter, and to urge the adoption henceforth, save in exceptional cases, of a standard expression for resistivity; all in the hope that the needed reform will thus actually be brought about. The general definition of the resistivity of a material is the resistance in ohms between two opposite faces of a unit cube of that, material. No account need be taken here of the cases in which the unit volume is not a cube, and the units of length and cross-section are different, encountered principally when dealing with metallic conductors such as wires. The idea of the resistance of a unit volume of earth or rock has found expres-sion in geophysical literature in a number of forms and with a variety of units. Fortunately, the metric system has been adhered to in most cases, so ordinarily the meter or the centimeter, usually the latter, has been the measure chosen. The resistivity is then the resistance of a cube of the given rock, or soil, one centimeter on, an edge. This is far from always being the same thing, however, as the resistance of a cubic centimeter. A long thin wire could contain a cubic centimeter and have a high resistance, whereas the same volume formed into a flat plate would have an entirely different, and quite low, resistance between faces. Con-sequently, it is not proper to express resistivity in ohms per cubic centi-meter, inch, etc., as has been done occasionally by .some writers. In an effort to emphasize the idea of cubic volume, some geophysicists, the writer among them, have used the phrase, ohms per centimeter cubed. This is a graphic way of picturing the measure, but is not in favor among highly qualified authorities. In this connection, an appeal was made to the U. S. Bureau of Standards for advice, and the Director, George K. Burgess, kindly replied in detail as to the practice adopted by his Bureau: ." . .' such expressions as ohms per centimeter cubed' or any similar expressions are objectionable, because they certainly carry the implica-tion that the resistivity is found by dividing ohms resistance by the volume in cubic centimeters." The rapid expansion of the natural gas industry in this country during the past three or four years has necessitated the construction of a number of long and comparatively large diameter high-pressure pipe lines This period of expansion and construction is still at high tide, and the current year will doubtless surpass all prior years in mileage and capacity of gas line installation. The fundamental economics of the business of long-distsrier transportation of natural gas may be briefly and simply stated, although most careful consideration must be given the actual determination and integration of the several more important factors which determine the ultimate success or failure of such a project. Reduced to its simplest form, a sound natural gas transportation project requires: 1. A competent source of gas, where the combination of quantity of gas available, cost of production, and longevity meet the given requirements. 2. A market, reasonably certain to endure in the face of any probable competition, of satisfactory size and price, and having a sufficiently favorable load factor. 3. A cost of installation of pipe line systen and an operating cost such as will, with honest and reasonably efficient management, afford a net operating return sufficient to attract the necessary capital required. In a11 new projects of this kind it is necessary that thehe three cssentials to ultimate success be assured. Hence the necessity of competent surveys of gas supply, and of market, both industrial and domestic. The prudent engineer will allow for "factors of safety" in reaching his conclusions just as he would in the design of a bridge. This paper deals primarily with but one of the major considerations enumerated above, I. e, the economic design of the pipe line system. The use of froth flotation for the separation of minerals has become one of the most important of ore dressing processes. Its particular adaptability to the enrichment of low grade ores has made the process an important factor in the national economy. The methods have been extended to the recovery of a great number of minerals. Among the few minerals which have resisted efforts toward industrial flotation is chrysocolla, a hydrated partly colloidal copper silicate. Chrysocolla, being a product of natural oxidation, has been found to occur in small quantities with many ores which are recovered by flotation methods. In present practice, these small quantities of copper silicate pass off with the tailings and are lost. The advantages to be gained by a satisfactory process for the recovery of chrysocolla is apparent. Any application of principles which points a way toward the satisfactory industrial flotation process for copper silicate would be of advantage. This paper presents an attack on this problem. Two methods for the recovery of chrysocolla have been developed by the United States Bureau of Mines.1,2 They have been successful on a laboratory scale but have been seriously restricted in industrial application by critical requirements in the procedure. In one of the Bureau of Mines methods,' the ore is activated with sodium or hydrogen sulphide in an aqueous solution at a pH of 4. Amy1 xanthate is then used as a collector with pine oil as a frother in the flotation process. An excess of sulphide acts as a depressant and the state of optimum conditions is difficult to control industrially. In the second Bureau of Mines method,2 soap is used as the collector at a pH of between 8 and 9. The diffi- culties with this process are that soap is not a specific collector, that heavy metal or alkaline earth ions cause the formation of insoluble soaps, and that a more acid solution causes the formation of a free acid which does not act as a collector for chrysocolla. The problem of recovering chrysocolla by flotation involves the selection of a suitable collector. The collector molecule must be composed of an active polar group that has an attraction for chrysocolla, and of a hydrocarbon chain. Certain dyes have been shown to have an attraction for certain minerals. Suida3 found that hydrated silicates are colored by basic dyes. Dittler4 showed that chrysocolla, among other colloidal minerals of acid reaction, preferentially takes up such basic dyes as fuchsin B, methylene blue, and methyl green. Endell5 gave information to show that the colloidal material in clay may be determined by its selective adsorption of fuchsin. A simple experiment, likewise, illustrates the difference in the adsorptive power of chrysocolla and of silica for the basic triphenyl methane dyes. When a mixture of chrysocolla and silica is immersed in a very dilute dye solution, less than 5 ppm, the chryso-colla is rapidly dyed and the silica is dyed more slowly. The difference is substantial but one of degree. Dean2 showed that the dyes, crystal violet and toluidine blue, are taken up by quartz in an adsorption type process. The difference in the adsorptive power, however, offers the means by which a new collector may act. To form such a collector, a hydrocarbon chain must be attached to the dye molecule. This involves a process of organic synthesis. Butyl, hexyl, and octyl hydrocarbon chains were selected for substitution in the malachite green molecule. For the purpose of identification, the alkyl-substituted dyes formed are called: butyl-malachite green; hexyl- malachite green; and octyl-malachite green. An outline of the procedure for their synthesis is given in the appendix. It is generally recognized in the preparation of this type of dye that the chemical structure of some of the dye molecules varies. However, a uniform formula is attributed to the dye. Such a procedure has been followed in specifying the structure of these alkyl-substi-tuted malachite green dyes. The structure is given on the basis of their properties as an homologous series of dyes, on their method of preparation, and on the purity of intermediates used. The objectives of this report are (1) to indicate what is known of natural rock temperatures as deep as 5000 ft below the surface, (2) to indicate methods for estimating such temperatures in localities where directly measured temperatures are un- available, and (3) to outline as far as possible, areas in the 48 states within which rock temperatures are likely to be low and high. The usual object of temperature measurements in deep mines and wells is to learn the temperature of air or another circulating medium. This usually differs significantly from the undisturbed rock temperature. The subject is complicated further by the variety of the thermal properties and structures of rock masses, the migration of fluids within them, the diversity of the history of rock masses and of the processes which have been at work on them during that history.

In this way the effect of repair materials on the amount of slag tapped would be found with a reasonable degree of accuracy. Ten heats were made for this study with careful attention to a uniform charge. The steel was the usual grade B and melting was carried out in a 3 1/2-ton top-charge Lectromelt furnace. Melting practice in all cases was the same-complete oxidation, with recarbonization by means of low-silicon pig iron.

In 1973, the United States production of marketable phosphate rock set a record in excess of 42 million tons. This production rate is expected to continue to increase, due to the growing international requirement for fertilizer, at a rate exceeding 5% per year well into 1977. One approach towards increasing plant production capacity to meet the growing demand is through large-capacity flotation cells, provided they achieve metallurgical performance comparable to existing smaller cells. A 9-month evaluation test program recently completed at the Haynsworth mine at Bradley, Fla., demonstrated the feasibility of achieving economically acceptable concentrate grade and recovery levels using large, high-capacity flotation cells. The composition of the feed to the Haynsworth beneficiation plant is a typical Florida pebble phosphate matrix composed of phosphorite pebbles ranging in size from approximately 1-1/2 in. down to 150 mesh and intimately associated with a mixture of clay and sand (essentially silica). The feed contains approximately 22 to 28% phosphate reporting as tricalcium phosphate, Ca3 (PO,) 2, or "bone phosphate of lime" (BPL). The flotation section utilizes the double-float procedure typical of Florida plants. The phosphate is first floated away from the silica in the rougher circuit, using crude fatty acid, ammonia, and fuel oil or kerosene. Rougher conditioning is accomplished at 60 to 70% pulp solids with sufficient ammonia added to raise the pH to 9 to 9.5. Following coarse and fine rougher flotation, the concentrate (overflow) streams are joined and conditioned (sulfuric acid cleaned and washed) prior to entering the cleaner circuit where an amine float (cationic reagent and kerosene added in the feed box; pH 7.3 to 7.8) is employed to float the silica. The feed to the coarse rougher circuit averages 29% +35 mesh while the fine rougher feed averages 10%+35 mesh. Primary attention was directed toward the large rougher cell performance (recovery and grade) on coarse feed during the Haynsworth evaluation program. Flotation Cell Test Program A row of three No. 120 size (300 cu ft) WEMCO flotation cells was installed in parallel with an existing air-cell row. The total installed volume of the large cell circuit was 900 cu ft and required a floor space of 306 sq ft. This compared to the air-cell total volume of 200 cu ft and 152 sq ft floor space. (Both floor areas include feed and tails hoppers but exclude walkways.) Fig. 1 is a schematic cross section of the large flotation cell showing the relative location of key mechanism elements. In operation, the rotor generates a fluid vortex extending up along the walls of the standpipe and creating a sufficient vacuum within its core to ingest air into the standpipe/rotor cavity through the air inlet duct. The ingested air mixes with the pulp, which has been recirculated through the false bottom and draft tube, in the rotor. Further mixing occurs as the air and pulp move radially outward from the rotor, finally passing through the disperser into the flotation cell. Flotation is accomplished outside the disperser, where phosphorite laden air bubbles rise and the remaining pulp recirculates down along the cell wall to the false bottom and draft tube. Large-flotation-cell performance is influenced by the ability of the mechanism to (1) circulate, or suspend, the solids in the pulp; (2) ingest air into the rotor cavity; and (3) mix the air and pulp effectively. The proper balance between pulp circulation and air ingestion is a key consideration in achieving good recovery in a course feed application. Large-flotation-cell pulp circulation and air transfer characteristics are significantly influenced by rotor speed and rotor submergence; therefore, these two operational parameters can be used to "optimize" a particular mill application. Fig. 2 maps the hydraulic performance of the WEMCO No. 120 size flotation cell. This map can be used to relate the cell operational parameters which influence metallurgical performance. At a given rotor speed, power intensity (i.e., pulp circulation) is seen to increase, and airflow decrease, as rotor submergence is increased. The inverse relation between power and airflow is due to the two-phase air-liquid mixture density reduction accompanying the increased airflow rate. For any fixed rotor submergence, the power intensity (i.e., fluid circulation) and airflow both increase as rotor speed is increased. The selection of these two mutually related operating conditions (i.e., rotor speed and submergence) was a key consideration in the Haynsworth evaluation program.

The orientation relationships resulting from allotropic transformations and the formation of segregate structures in metals and alloys have been the subject of the eight earlier papers in this series'. A brief summary of orientation studies has also been given by Sachs2. A survey of these papers discloses that the factors that determine the orientation relationship of a precipitated phase to its parent solid solution, as well as the outward form and appearance of the new phase, are not completely understood. It is now evident that crystallographically analogous systems, as a rule, exhibit the same type of Widmanstatten figure and orientation relations, so that useful information is not to be expected from examination of a new alloy involving lattice combinations of which the orientation relationships are already known. Therefore, the determination of the relations existing between lattice types that have not already been studied seems to be the most promising mode of attack upon the problem; both of the systems reported in this paper represent new combinations of lattice types. A. The Mg-Mg2Sn System The magnesium-tin equilibrium diagram given by Hansen3 shows the phase Mg2Sn to be the only intermediate phase. The solid solubility of Sn in Mg decreases from 14.8 weight per cent at the eutectic temperature, 561' C., to 2.3 per cent at 450°, while no solid solubility of Mg in Mg2Sn has been observed. The crystal structur: of Mg is close-packed hexagonal with a0 = 3.202 A. and co = 5.199 A.4, while Mg2Sn is of the CaF2 type with a. = 6.78 A., with four molecules in a unit ce115,6. Alloys from two different sources have been used: (1) those supplied by the Dow Chemical Co., which contain 6 and 8 weight per cent Sn, and (2) those prepared in this laboratory, containing 8 and 13.5 per cent Sn. As is well known, the alloys of iron containing 18 ± per cent chromium, 8 ± per cent nickel and less than 1.2 per cent carbon exhibit the same allotropic modifications as iron. The face-centered cubic or gamma phase is stable at high temperatures and the body-centered cubic or alpha ferrite is presumably stable at room temperature. The transformation from the gamma phase to the alpha phase in alloys of the above composi-tion (18-8 or stainless steel) is sluggish; even moderately rapid cooling permits the retention of the gamma phase. Cold-work, however, causes the transformation from gamma to alpha to occur at room temperatures. It is difficult, nevertheless, to induce complete transformation regardless of the method of cold-working. Since metallographic polishing is very effective in transforming the surface austenite to ferrite, as indicated by the magnetic studies of Buehl and Wulff, 1 it was decided to investigate the phenomenon by electron diffraction methods.

A magnetic field has been used to damp out liquid convection during the solidification of castings. Ingots of Al-2 pct Cu were poured from various sperheats (10" to 65°C) into a room-temperature graphite mold located between the poles of an electromagnet. The effect on ingot structure of varying the strength and time of application of the magnetic field was investigated, and the results are interpreted in light 01- current theories of ingot structure. In the solidification of alloy systems, thermal gradients in the melt and differences in density of the constituents are expected to produce convective motion in the liquid. The thermal convection caused by temperature gradients should be present during the freezing of both alloys and pure materials, while the solute convection caused by density differences should be of concern only for alloys. The possible influence of this natural convection on the structure of castings has been discussed by Ruddle,' Chalmers, and Tiller. More recently, an experimental investigation of such effects was carried out by Cole and Bolling. These workers took stationary molds containing lead- and tin-based alloys and. using a brine solution. quenched them from various superheats above their respective liquidus temperatures. When grids were placed across the mold diameter to suppress convection, the grid region was later observed to contain a larger percentage of columnar grains than other parts of the casting or than similar castings poured without the grids present. From thermocouple measurements, they found the temperature in the grid region to be higher than that in the region outside the grids throughout the freezing process, and concluded that convection should be an important mode of heat transfer in normal castings. In addition to such convection arising from thermal gradients or differences in density of the constituents, a further source of convective motion, which we shall call "momentum convection", may be particularly important in small (laboratory-size) castings. By this term we refer to the convective motion produced in the initial pouring process, a motion which is damped out as the linear momentum and angular momentum of the liquid are dissipated. Besides these sources of convection, which are present to some extent in all castings. external influences may also be effective in producing convective motion. Examples of such "forced" convection which have been discussed in the literature include stirring the melt, shaking the mold, rotating the mold, and so forth The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of convection on the structure of castings poured into a cold mold. The technique of magnetic damping was previously used by Utech and F1emings" in their study of convective effects on impurity banding and other substructure in alloy crystals grown unidirectionally from the melt. In their investigation, fields as small as 200 gauss were found to be effective in damping the convection currents which influence the banding. THE Franklin Laboratory was designed mainly for the analysis of the products from the two concentrating mills situated at Franklin and Sterling Hill, the most important determinations being the zinc, iron, manganese, lime, moisture and silica contents of the ores. Within the last 4 years, however, it has been found advisable to examine most of our supplies, and therefore additional space and equipment was allotted for the examination of such substances as oils, greases, soaps, alloys, fuels, paints, explosives and water. The building as shown in elevation (Fig. 1) and plan (Fig. 2) consists of a main or routine laboratory, an experimental laboratory, a water FIG. 1.-WEST ELEVATION. analysis room and the other accessories such as stock room, library, sampling and drying rooms and office. The main laboratory is further divided into a balance room and zinc analysis room. As the greater part of our determinations are volumetric, good light is a very important factor and with this in view the interior walls of the building were constructed of white enameled brick laid in Keene cement. These also have the additional advantage that they give a clean and attractive appearance to the room. The windows are large, being 76 by 44 in. and even on very dark days the light is good throughout the whole laboratory. In making the original estimates for a report recommending the cyanidation of Ymir stamp-mill tailings, the writer was unable to find in any of the standard works on cyanide-practice certain data applicable to the local conditions; nor has he as yet seen quite the same practice recorded in the rapidly growing literature of cyanidation. To present these figures, together with a few novel features of local practice, the present paper is offered. The ore treated is obtained from a fissure-vein of steep dip, occurring in a slate country. The ore-body is lenticular in plan, swelling from 4 ft. in width at one end to a maximum of 42 ft., and tapering irregularly to less than 18 in., where payvalues cease. In the wider portions of the fissure the ore is mixed with more or less horse-matter from the walls. The clean ore is white, massive quartz, with from 8 to 12 per cent of sulphurets; the latter being pyrite, sphalerite and galena, the predominance being in the order given. The precious metal tenor is variable, the gold more closely following the pyrite, the silver the galena. The present mill-supply is practically all from below the oxidized zone. The unavoidable admixture of horse-matter and stope-filling with the ore as mined, affects more or less the character of the mill-feed, which sometimes contains from 10 to 25 per cent of slate. During the last three months of 1902, the mill-feed carried 0.3977 oz. gold and 1.903 oz. silver per ton of 2,000 lb., 2.65 per cent lead and 2.92 per cent zinc. The iron, unfortunately, was not determined. The Ymir mill and mine have been fully described elsewhere;* suffice it to say of the milling that the crushed ore,

EARLY in 1917, it became evident, owing to existing and pending market conditions, that a substitute for crude petroleum must be found for firing the smelter furnaces. After a review of the plants then existing, it was deemed advisable to depart from their practice and to adopt the following described system of distributing pulverized coal to the furnaces. The principal advantages of the proposed system, which influenced this decision, were: (1) Equal safety; no pulverized coal is stored at the furnaces; (2) greater ease of operation, furnace fires being controlled by regulating valves in burner branches, as in gas firing; (3) better organization; all machinery, including pulverized coal feed, is under one roof, and the organization is separate from the furnace department; (4) greater cleanliness; all machinery is under vacuum; (5) greater flexibility of application; the coal and air mixture can be piped where needed. The design of the plant is the result of the combined efforts of the local engineering staff and of the machinery manufacturers. Many new features were embodied in this design to insure greater safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of handling. After 14 months of continuous operation, the plant has proved entirely satisfactory. The building is of structural steel, covered with corrugated steel, with many windows and is painted light gray inside and out. The building floor is of concrete with ample drains to the sewer, and the building is equipped with fire and service water piping. Fig. 1 shows the east side of the building and the incline conveyor from the raw-coal bins.

A study including effects of 7) pH value, 2) fatty acid collector, 3) fuel oil, 4) interfering ion, 5) particle size, and 6) operational variables. Test results indicate feasibility of fatty acid flotation under certain restrictive conditions. FATTY acids have been used as standard collectors for floating the matrix1-8 but not the leached zone phosphate ores. After a series of investigations, Davenport9 and Tarbutton10 concluded that the Florida leached zone ores tested were unamenable to fatty acid flotation and must be upgraded by floating the siliceous gangue with Armac-T as collector. The cationic flotation was estimated11 to cost almost ten times as much as a fatty acid process that would ideally give the same flotation grades and recoveries of phosphates. Mineralization: Extensive deposits of leached zone aluminiferous phosphate occur in Florida."= The ore sample used for this work was obtained from the Virginia-Carolina Chemical Corp., Clear Springs area, Florida. The ore is a potential source of uranium and aluminum as well as phosphorus. Since the uranium and the recoverable aluminum are contained in some of the phosphate minerals, an upgrading of phosphate results in a corresponding enrichment of both uranium and aluminum. The phosphate minerals in the ore are primarily pseudo-wavellite, millisite, and carbonate fluorapatite, with a minor amount of wavellite. Quartz and clay are the common gangue minerals, quartz being predominant. Others present in small amounts are ilmenite, hydrated iron oxides, staurolite, monazite, and zircon. Experimental Procedures: After being dried to less than 1 pct surface moisture the material was dry-ground in a Hardinge conical ball mill to —6 mesh. The ground product was classified into 6/20, 20/200, and —200 mesh size fractions. On the basis of Table I, the coarse and fine size fractions were considered as phosphate concentrates, because of their high phosphorus contents. In contrast, the 20/200 mesh fraction, which was low in phosphorus, was used as the flotation feed. All the flotation tests, unless otherwise stated, were performed in a laboratory Fagergren machine under the following conditions: 1) 400 g of solid feed for each test, 2) 2000 rpm impeller speed, 3) 8.9 pH and 4-min conditioning, and 4) 3-min flotation. The procedure used for the quantitative bubble pick-up tests has been described previously.18

WHEN we want to interpret some problem which faces us at the present, if that problem be a social or political movement, we turn to the pages of history for 'information. If the problem be one of science or of industry we turn to the library of the subject and endeavor to translate the present from the experience of the past. I wonder if you would bear with me for a few minutes as I look back to the time when I was going through mining school and looking forward with hope, it is true and with confidence also, but still with some trepidation and an occasional qualm, to the month of June when the class of 1897 would be hunting jobs. Those were the years 1893 to 1897. Those years saw the Treasury of the United States so empty of gold that the President had to appeal to financiers to accept the country's promises to pay in return for $100,000,000 in gold. And the invectives that were hurled at both their heads for such a betrayal of the people sound strangely similar to those you read today being daily written and screamed at another President for taking us into the League of Nations or for not issuing bonds in huge amounts for unemployment relief, or for not adopting somebody else's particular specific for the relief of hard times.

WITH gold at $35 for the last four years, almost double the old figure, and 'an unlimited market, there is perhaps more activity in the mining and milling of that metal than in that of any other of the widely distributed ores. Despite threats from Russia, the Rand district is still dominant. In South Africa in 1936, 48,200,000 tons of gold ore was crushed after sorting out about 10 per cent of that mined. The pounding of 5914 trusty stamps on the 60 mi. of Rand reefs is noteworthy. At the end of 1935, 466 tube mills were operating on the Rand, the popular size being 6 1/2 by 20 ft. The grinding medium normally consists of ore pebbles picked from the ore but recently a composite load of 3-in. steel balls and pebbles has found favor for added capacity, a ratio of 2.5 tons of pebbles to one ton of halls being maintained. The total ore fed to the mills is only about 0.14 ton per hp.-hr. Such a slow rate 'of feed cannot help but result in overgrinding. Ball mills, 9 by 8 ft., some of which have come from Canada, are now being tried. Stamps have been ousted from all new flow sheets, but the old stamp mills are continually renovated and kept on duty as they are at the Homestake in the United States. Half of the world's gold and silver ores is still crushed by stamps, a few of which are single, dropping in individual mortars.'

The Brookhaven field is one of several Basal Tuscaloosa reservoirs located in south-central Mississippi. It is a standstone reservoir, of erratic deposition and with several faults, having an approximate subsea depth of 9,800 ft. A large variation in permeability exists with a weighted average being 256 md. Estimated average interstitial water saturation is 45 per cent. The undersaturated reservoir fluid exhibits marked differences in physical properties with measured saturation pressures ranging from 733 to 2,255 psi. Early rapid decline in reservoir pressure caused the operating interests to unitize the field and initiate a program of pressure maintenance by gas injection. At the time gas injection was commenced, the reservoir pressure had fallen to nearly half of the original pressure with only 4.5 Per cent of the original oil in place produced. The reservoir pressure has since been maintained at approximately 2,750 psig, and cumulative production to date is 17 per cent of original oil in place. An analysis of field performance during gas injection is presented in detail. The program of pressure maintenance by gas injection is considered to be a success, since the expected ultimate recovery has been increased and the current production rate is in excess of 2 per cent of original oil in place per year. Performance has been better, anticipated ultimate recovery is larger, and total production costs are lower than for a similar Basal Tuscaloosa reservoir nearby, even though that field appears to have a more effective natural water drive. INTRODUCTION The history of the Brookhaven Unit is a testimonial for unitization and for the application of engineering techniques in the operation of an oil field. The operating and royalty interests in this field have mutually benefited from their early recognition of the need for unitization and pressure maintenance and from the forthright manner in which these were accomplished. The tangible benefits accruing to the participants in the Unit are: (1) income from gasoline plant products, (2) reduced lifting and operating costs from those of competitive operation, (3) maintenance of high levels of current income by mitigation of the inevitable decline in production rates inherent to natural depletion, (4) an increase in ultimate recovery of about 40 per cent over natural depletion operations. This paper should properly be considered a progress report; however, the performance of the field after five years of pressure maintenance clearly indicates that the ultimate success of the project is assured. SULPHIDE ore-bodies of more or less lenticular shape occurring in metamorphic crystalline schists, gneisses, and. slates, and conforming closely in strike and usually in dip to the inclosing rock, have been recognized and described along the, Atlantic seaboard from Quebec to Alabama. The ore-bodies do not entirely conform, in all cases, to the structure of the inclosing schists, but they sometimes cut across the foliation in dip, though conforming more closely with the direction of strike. In composition the principal sulphide mineral is usually pyrite or pyrrhotite; or both, accompanied by copper, frequently gold, and almost always some sphalerite and galenite. Other. metallic ores are, so far as these sulphide bodies have been investigated, less common; silver is not uncommon, and in some of the pyrrhotite masses nickel is present in quantity sufficient to be commercially valuable. Cobalt frequently accompanies .the nickel, usually in smaller amount, and the two vary much in relative proportion. Quartz and calcite are probably the most common of the, non-metallic minerals. A number of silicate minerals are frequent representatives in one place or another; garnet, amphibole, biotite, pyroxene, zoisite and others. The sulphide bodies of Virginia, comprising both pyrite and pyrrhotite, are among the most extensive along the Atlantic seaboard. Among the pyrite bodies may be mentioned the well-known and extensively worked mines of Louisa and Prince William, counties, located on' the main pyrite belt (A, Fig. 1) of the middle and northern, eastern Piedmont region in Virginia, and among the pyrrhotite bodies is the famous " Great Gossan Lead "(B, Fig. 1) of the Floyd-Carroll-Graysou coun-

Regenerative hot-blast stoves are now in general use in all parts of the world, and are so well understood and appreciated, that I need not take up your time with an account of their history and introduction into the United States. My object in writing this paper is to give you a short description of a stove that is now being very favorably received and adopted here (see drawing). The stove was first introduced into this country in 1887 by M'Clure & Shuler (now M'Clure & Amsler), who have the management of the patent right in the United States. The English design had to be modified to suit the exigencies of American blast-furnace practice, which, in many respects, widely differs from our English experience. In the first place, the fire-bricks used in America expand to an extent unknown in England, and it became necessary to make special provision for this by increasing the number of cross-walls, and by leaving a space at the top of the stove through which the lining could expand. The expansion laterally was, however, more difficult to provide for, as the combustion-chamber in the center, being the hottest part of the stove, must necessarily expand more than the outer walls, and therefore tend to squeeze up the flue-openings. On first introducing these stoves to American ironmasters, a feel ing seemed to prevail that a " four-pass " stove did not utilize the whole of its surface. They also had an idea that the " two-pass " stove let the burning gas go before all the duty had been extracted from it; so that it was found neceseary to design a stove of a special character to suit their wishes. Hence the "three-pass" chimney top stove now before your notice, the advantage claimed for which is that each stove is independent, requiring no underground chimney flue or stack, and can be erected at a very light cost. The working of these stoves has proved to be very successful wherever they have been introduced.
