J.-I should like to ask if Mr. Bach does not think it rather harmful to let the amen depend entirely on the company, whether it would not be a good plan to let the men aid a little in the support of these organizations? Also whether he has had any experience with utilizing the Y. M. C. A. in this connection. E. E. BACH, Ellsworth, Pa.-That question is always raised whenever there is discussion upon this subject. So far as we are concerned that would not help a bit; our people do not have that feeling, because .we have a company which these men recognize has a corps of very sympathetic officials in every way. I remember the assistant general manager lived out in one of these mining towns for a while. His difficulty was that every man, no matter what, who or where he was, if he had, or thought lie had, a, complaint, had the right of way to his office, and didn't have to stop at all. That is the spirit that predominates all through it. This is also the spirit of the mine foremen, two of whom were trained in our own night school, and it is the spirit of the fire boss and the general spirit of the people. They do not feel that we are trying to feed them with a spoon. As to the Y. M. C. A., we feel that it would be impracticable for us. R H. VAIL, New York, N. Y.-It would be very interesting if Mr. Bach would tell a little more about the control of the dispensing of intoxicants. There are many communities where the state intends to do that but does not succeed very well, and as Mr. Bach has spoken of the speakeasies on the environment of these towns, it would he well to know more about the problem of eliminating those.

The morpho1ogies and orientation relationships of the phases in the Sn-Zn and A1-A13Ni eutectic systems were examined by electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. In each alloy the "transition" from the lamellar to the fibrous morphology was found to be one of scale, not of type. The minor phase in both systems exhibited certain well developed facets which were not affected by changes in the ingot solidification rate. The crystallographic relationships displayed by the pairs of phases in both systems were also insensitive to the growth rate. In the Sn-Zn alloy, the unique relationship of: growth direction - II [1201 Sn - II [01101 Zn and ribbon interface plane 11 (101) Sn 11 (7012) Zn was determined. The Al-Al3Ni alloy phases did not possess any particular orientation relationship, though the Al3Ni phase invariably grew in the [010] direction and exhibited the same set of facet planes. These results are discussed in relation to current eutectic growth theories and explanations of the "lamellar to fibrous transition". THE lamellar to fibrous transition that occurs in many eutectic alloys has been the subject of considerable speculation and experimental study. In some alloys it can be induced solely by an increase in the solidification rate,'-3 whereas in others the transition supposedly occurs only if the lamellae are forced to grow out of the overall ingot growth direction.4-6 he cause of this latter type of transition has been attributed to deviations of the lamellae from their low energy habit planes;4'5'7 fibers are produced because the sustaining force for lamellar growth (a low energy boundary) is destroyed. Implicit in these explanations is the assumption that fibers are circular in cross-section and completely lacking in low energy inter-phase interfaces. The "natural" growth rate dependent transition has been studied less thoroughly although Tiller8 has attempted a theoretical explanation of it. Tiller's arguments are not completely satisfactory9 but his suggestion that the relative undercoolings of the solid/liquid interface for lamellar and fibrous morphologies are growth rate dependent cannot be totally discounted; it is possible, for instance, that the relative interfacial undercoolings could alter and produce the observed morphology change if the orientation relationships between the phases and the associated interphase bound- ary energies were sensitive to growth rate. Salkind et al." have reported finding a change in the orientation relationships in the A1-A13Ni system accompanying the lamellar to fibrous transition, but contradictory evidence has also been reported for this3'" and another system,12 so the position remains unclear. In an attempt to clarify matters a study was made of the "lamellar to fibrous" transition in the Sn-Zn and A1-A13Ni eutectic systems; the morphologies of these two selected systems are quite similar when viewed by optical microscopy. In the present research the morphologies and morphology changes were investigated by electron microscopy. The orientation relationships existing between the eutectic phases were also determined for both morphologies in both eutectic systems. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The materials and method of alloy preparation and ingot solidification for the Sn-Zn system have been reported previously.2 In this investigation nine horizontally grown ingots of the highest purity (99.9997 pct) were used. The temperature gradient in the melt was not intentionally varied and was approximately 10°C per cm. Seven growth rates between 1.3 cm per hr and 20 cm per hr were imposed. The A1-A13Ni alloys were prepared from "Spec. Pure" nickel and 99.995 pct aluminum by melting the components in an open alumina crucible and casting the melt into the cold graphite mold. Six ingots of the Al-Al3Ni alloy were unidirectionally solidified at growth rates from 1 cm per hr to 12 cm per hr under high purity argon. A typical ingot was 20 cm long, 1 cm wide, and 0.75 cm to 1.5 cm thick. Samples taken from the bars at positions 12 cm from the nucleation end were examined by conventional orthogonal-section metallo-graphic techniques. When required, samples were mounted for X-ray diffraction analysis using the Laue back-reflection technique with a finely focussed X-ray source. The surfaces of the A1-A13Ni specimens were prepared by mechanically polishing them down to the 1 µ diamond pad stage followed by an electropolish in 80/20 methanol/perchloric acid solution at 0°C and 20 to 30 v. The Sn-Zn specimens were repeatedly polished on an alumina pad and etched in hot dilute (2 pct) nitric acid until the diffraction spots were found to be sharp. Thin films of the alloys were prepared for observation in an electron microscope by spark machining thin discs (0.03 to 0.04 in. thick) from longitudinal and lateral sections of the bars and elec-trolytically thinning them via a jet polishing technique. For the A1-A13Ni eutectic alloy, an 80/20 mixture of ethanol/perchloric acid at 40 v and 20°C was found to be satisfactory. A solution of 70/20/10 methanol/perchloric acid/butylcellosolve at 25 v and 20°C was used on the Sn-Zn alloy. For the former alloy the jet nozzles (cathodes) and the disc clamps were of aluminum;

INTRODUCTION Block-caving mines are generally large operations. Calculating the quantity and value of mineral present and determining the economic limits to mining are complicated processes requiring much time and effort. If these processes are to be worthwhile, they must be accurate and reliable. Success in planning may increase the economic returns significantly. Since capital investments in block-caving mines are generally quite large, and development may span several years, quicker and more accurate methods of mine layout are very worthwhile to the mining industry. The purpose of this study is to develop an approach to the evaluation and layout of block-caving mines. The study included development of a simple approach to modelling ore reserves and a rapid, dynamic programming solution for optimum ultimate mining limits. TRADITIONAL APPROACHES TO BLOCK-CAVING MINE LAYOUT General discussion of techniques of calculating and valuing ore reserves can be found in the literature, (1-4). Mining limit approaches have been investigated by many and follow five general methods: 1, Moving cone method (5) 2. Graphroriented technique (6,7) 3. Dynamic programming technique (7,8,9) 4. Network flow method (10,11) 5. Pillar method (12) Of these investigations, only two were developed for underground mining applications, those of Sharp (9) and Riddle (11).

NATURAL resources become a source of wealth as they are exploited and made available to the people in usable form. Experience has taught us that Nature does not readily give up her treasures, but the ingenuity of man in the field of techologic progress is required to find and efficiently exploit these resources. History has also demonstrated that with advancing technologic knowledge the. world has become progressively richer in its resources. Those that could not be commercially exploited are now being turned to beneficial use. Through expanding technology and the use of substitutes and synthetics, availability of the world's sources of natural wealth is today many times that of a hundred or a thousand years ago. And so it is with petroleum. Technology is also the great multiplier of our petroleum resources. Through improvements in the art of finding, drilling, and producing, our ability to meet rapidly increasing demands over the last quarter century has been maintained. On the other hand, had our

T HE engineer of today is by his training, by his traditions, and by the service which he must render, irrevocably committed to taking his part in public life along with the members of the older professions of ministry, medicine and law. Nevertheless, in comparison with these: three, so long recognized as the "learned professions-all three of which grew out of the functions of the priesthood-engineering in any modern sense of the word is a youthful profession indeed. So youthful is engineering in its present significance, that it may be said to date from the labors of John Smeaton, the lighthouse builder; of Simon Newcomen and James Watt, the inventors of the steam engine; and of George Stephenson, the inventor of the locomotive; at the dawn of the 19th century. Great works of an engineering character had, it is true, been executed long before this, but practically all of them had been rule-of-thumb enterprises, dependent upon a plethora of slave labor for their accomplishment. For illustration it is said that at Rio Tinto in the days of Hiram, king of Tyre, 40,000 men worked for a year to produce three tons of silver from the rich outcrop ore. Such an operation can scarcely be called an engineering enterprise, however, when we remember that a fourth of this number of men in these same mines, from which the richest ore was long ago extracted, produce at present over 100 tons of copper per day.

AVAILABLE data for the first nine months of the Year indicate that accident occurrence in metal mining was well on its way to an all-time low for 1939. However, the relatively rapid pickup in mining production in the fall will be likely to boost both accident occurrence and also accident rates. Results of the National Safety Competition for 1938, the fourteenth of its kind conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, were published in August, 1939. W. W. Adams, statistician of the bureau, states that "with 345 mines and quarries competing, more than in any previous year except 1931, the contest revealed low accident rates at many of the enrolled plants and, which is even more remarkable, it revealed 113 mines and quarries at which no lost- time accidents occurred during the con- test year." The National Safety Competition provides a means whereby mines and quarries may engage in active competition to stimulate their safety programs. Companies in the contest can compare their records with those of similar plants operating elsewhere and thereby determine to what extent their safety programs are successful. The Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association gave over 150 awards for safety performance in the mineral industries in 1939 and a remarkable phase of these awards was the considerable number given to individual miners who had worked fifty or more years without sustaining a lost-time accident.

All members shall be equally- entitled to the privileges of membership, excepting that Honorary Members, Junior Associates, and Members and Associates whose residences shall be outside of the United States, Mexico, and Canada shall not be entitled to vote. Members and Associates residing within the United States of America, Mexico, and Canada, and not in arrears for dues, shall be entitled to vote in person at the meetings of the Institute, or, as hereinafter provided for, by letter ballot, SEC. 2, Members shall comprise all those persons who on the third Monday of February, 1918, were members of the Institute, and in-addition thereto, all those thereafter elected or transferred into the class of Members. A person to be eligible for election or transfer into the class of Members must be at least 27 years of age and must have had at least six years', employment in the practice of engineering, mining, geology, metallurgy or chemistry, during at least three years of which he must have held positions of responsibility in one or more of these fields. Graduation from the scientific course of a college, approved by the Committee on Membership,' shall be considered equivalent to two years' employment, as required in the previous sentence, Employment as -a teacher of engineering, mining, geology, metallurgy or chemistry, if in direct charge, may be considered a position of responsibility as specified in the second paragraph. Persons employed in research or any scientific literary work or in teaching in the scientific departments of colleges, approved by the Committee on Membership, who at the same time are engaged in consulting or in the active practice of mining, geology, or metallurgy, shall be entitled to consider the time so spent in active practice as equivalent to an equal length of time of employment in positions of responsibility, provided the work done or the positions held seem to the Committee on Membership to warrant the equivalency. The requirement of three years' employment in positions of responsibility may be waived by the Committee on Membership in the case of persons who have done notable original work in mining, geology, or metallurgy, or have won distinction by research or investigations, in one or more of these subjects.

Electric power demand doubles about every ten years, and because of the associated burgeoning fuel requirements, power stations absorb over half of the coal output in the United States. Throughout the 1960's, demand for coal utilized to generate electricity grew at an average annual rate of 6.5% but coal producers held back greater expansion because they expected nuclear plants to proliferate faster than they actually did. Even so, the growth rate is expected to continue at the 1960's rate until at least 1976. The continuation of the 6.5% growth rate beyond 1976, however, will require additional orders for coal-fired plants during the early 1970's. In fact, plants consuming a total of 130 million tons of coal must be ordered in the next few years. If the requisite plants materialize, total 1980 coal output for electrical power generation will be approximately 600 million tons.

A stability theory is developed for miscible liquid-liquid displacement within a porous medium. In the usual case considered, a high-density high-viscosity "oil" is displaced downdip by a low-density low-viscosity "solvent'! Perturbation methods are used to find the conditions under which the spreading mechanism changes from the stable dispersion process to unstable viscous fingering. We find that instability is conditional, that there is a dependence on the shape of a disturbance leading to a"diameter" effect and that very difficult experimental scaling problems may result. A useful consequence is the definition of a minimum "slug size" for stable miscible displacement. This should make possible optimum use of the solvent process for oil recovery. The results may apply to many situations in which one fluid displaces another of somewhat different fluid properties within a porous medium. INTRODUCTION The process of miscible liquid-liquid displacement looked very favorable when it first received serious consideration as a means to increase petroleum recovery. Some early laboratory results were interpreted to mean that only a small "slug" of solvent was needed, perhaps 2 to 3 per cent of a hydrocarbon pore volume. This "slug" could recover the oil in an entire reservoir provided the fluids remained miscible.1,2 Only a slow growth of the "mixing zone", or gradual transition from oil to solvent, should occur. This would follow naturally from mixing by a dispersion mechanism such as that described by Scheidegger.3 And, indeed, laboratory cores have shown this kind of behavior provided solvent viscosity was at least as great as that of the oi1.2,4-6 The same kind of behavior has also been observed with solvent viscosity lower than that of the oil after the distance traversed became large. Not all laboratory results have been this favorable, however.7-9 Mixing zone growth may become proportional to the distance traveled rather than the square root of this quantity. Such behavior accompanies high rates in short systems of large diameter, provided the viscosity ratio is adverse. If this more rapid spreading were to persist in a reservoir, the solvent requirement for miscible "slug" displacement could exceed 30 per cent of a pore volume. There is considerable economic importance in the difference between 3 and 30 per cent solvent. A 1ogical conclusion is that two different kinds of flow behavior are possible, with each kind leading to a different result. One kind gives efficient displacement, the other does not. In the efficient case, the solvent bank spreads out only by the mechanism we have termed dispersion. Under these conditions, displacement is as near piston-like as possible. In the second kind of flow, found only with adverse viscosity ratios, viscous fingering occurs. That is, permeability variations cause a small finger of low-viscosity solvent-rich fluid to move ahead of its average position within the mixing zone. This creates a path of low resistance to flow, and an even greater amount of solvent-rich fluid follows. Thus, the process is autocatalytic. Once started, the fingering mechanism rapidly becomes dominant. The question to be answered is this. Under what conditions will each of these two different kinds of flow occur? In particular, what conditions denote the transition from dispersion to viscous fingering as the solvent spreading mechanism? The answer may tell us whether or not the desirable, near piston-like miscible displacement process is practical. An answer to this problem can be obtained from theory by the use of perturbation methods. The procedure is as follows. We first formulate a mathematical representation of the system. Then a small disturbance (or perturbation) in solvent concentration profile is introduced and observed to see what happens. Unstable flow is indicated when a small disturbance will grow larger. This will lead to eventual viscous fingering. If on the other hand the disturbance dies out, the displacement is stable. In this latter case, with dispersion as the spreading mechanism, near piston-like displacement is possible. The physical properties, chemical behavior under thermal treatment, and fertilizer value of fluorine-containing pseudowavellite (hydrous calcium aluminum phosphate) that occurs as phosphate clay admixed with quartz sand in an extensive deposit near Bartow, Fla., were determined by experiments in laboratory, pilot-plant, and greenhouse. When the mineral was heated at 500°C, 80 pct of the phosphorus become citrate soluble. The heated product, however, deteriorates markedly under moist conditions such as obtain in the soil. EXTENSIVE beds of a soft aluminiferous phosphate lie in the Bartow-Pembroke region of Florida. Although the extent of the deposit is unknown, it is thought that the equivalent of at least five million tons of material containing 25 pct P,Os exists on one large mine property alone, and soft phosphates similar in nature are known to occur elsewhere in the state. This aluminum phosphate, unlike fluorapatite, is rendered fairly soluble in neutral ammonium citrate solution merely by heating it at a temperature below 600 °C, a property made the basis of a process patent by the junior author.' The possibility of producing an available form of phosphorus from what has hitherto been a worthless natural phosphate prompted the Bureau of Plant Industry, Soils, and Agricultural Engineering to make a brief study of the Pembroke phos- phate during the war years with a view towards determining the optimal temperature for heat treatment and the reactions involved in the process. The results of this study supplemented by data and information furnished by the junior author are presented in this paper. Description of Natural Phosphate: The phosphate with admixed quartz sand and siliceous matter occurs as a low-grade (8 to 9 pct P2O5) clay-like material that can be beneficiated cheaply by making a water separation of the very fine material from the sand, floating off the fine material, settling the suspension to a thick slurry, and finally de-watering the slurry by vacuum filtration followed by drying. The product dried at 100 °C contains about 16 pct water and 25 pct P2O5, about 1/12 of which is citrate soluble. Partial analyses of representative samples of the crude ore and corresponding concentrate are given in table I. The concentrate is light yellow in color and even after being dried at 100°C sticks very noticeably to laboratory grinding and screening equipment. Under the microscope the ground material is predominantly light brown crystalline aggregates with index of refraction near 1.61. The principal phosphate mineral constituent was identified as pseudo-wavellite with admixed phosphosiderite.2 Pseudo-

The geological features, development history and engineering detail of the Shuler Field and the results of approximately two years of unitized operation of the Shuler Jones Sand Pool, were discussed in a prior publication.' The purpose of this paper is to present the results of pressure maintenance in the Shuler Jones Sand Pool after nine years of unit operation. GENERAL INFORMATION The Shuler Jones Sand Pool is located in and about Section 18, Township 18 South, Range 17 West, Union County, Ark. The pool was discovered .in September, 1937, unitized in February, 1941, and subjected to gas injection operations in July, 1941. Water was first returned to the reservoir in July, 1944. The reservoir is an anticlinal trap covering about 4,000 acres. The 154,000 acre-ft of sandstone initially consisted of approximately 150,000 acre-ft of productive oil zone and 4,000 acre-ft of gas-cap. The average depth of production is 7,400 ft. Maximum closure of the reservoir is 135 ft and the oil column lies between a gas-oil contact at -7,270 ft and a water-oil contact at -7,370 to -7,380 ft. The field is approximately four miles long. east and .west, and one and one-half miles wide. The sand grains are angular and vary from fine to medium size. The porosity of the sandstone averages 20.2 per cent. The specific permeability averages 400 md. Some zones have as high as 30 per cent porosity and specific permeability of 4,000 md. The reservoir rock is not uniform in character but consists of sandstone zones interspersed with shale. The variation in rock characteristics is evident in the electric log and core analyses presented in the original publication. Asphalt present in the pore space of the sandstone limited the reservoir to the southeast and apparently blocked any encroachment of water from that direction. The initial reservoir pressure at a subsea depth of 7,300 ft was 3,520 psi. The reservoir temperature was 198ºF. Initially, the solution gas volume was 765 cu ft per bbl and the reservoir volume factor was 1.45. The gas solubility and formation-volume-factors of the reservoir liquid are related with reservoir pressures above 300 psi as follows: Solution gas, cu ft per cu ft, S = 0.0334 P + 18.65 Formation volume factor of reservoir oil, FVF = 8.0 x 10 -5 P + 1.168 Gas volume factor, standard cu ft of gas equivalent to one cu ft of gas at reservoir conditions of temperature and pressure, F = .062 P - 4 Pressure (P) measured in psia. The equation for the gas volume factor presented above is based on a direct measurement of a sample of the gas and is a correction of that used in the original paper. The gravity of the oil produced is from 32 to 34" API. CALCULATION OF INITIAL OIL IN PLACE The Jones Sand production history is interesting because it lends itself to analysis by material balance. Production statistics from discovery of the Jones Sand through 1949 and material balance calculations of the initial stock tank oil in place are shown in Table I. The usual procedure in testing the application of material balance calculations is to compute the apparent initial volume of oil in place, using production and pressure information obtained at different time periods. If the apparent oil in place volumes computed increase with successive time periods, water encroachment is indicated and approximations must be mads to correct for its influence. The first requirement in utilizing such calculations is reliable reservoir pressure, accumulated gas, oil and water production, and PVT data. Asphalt present in the pore space of the sandstone limited the reservoir to the southeast and apparently blocked any encroachment of water from that direction. The initial reservoir pressure at a subsea depth of 7,300 ft was 3,520 psi. The reservoir temperature was 198ºF. Initially, the solution gas volume was 765 cu ft per bbl and the reservoir volume factor was 1.45. The gas solubility and formation-volume-factors of the reservoir liquid are related with reservoir pressures above 300 psi as follows: Solution gas, cu ft per cu ft, S = 0.0334 P + 18.65 Formation volume factor of reservoir oil, FVF = 8.0 x 10 -5 P + 1.168 Gas volume factor, standard cu ft of gas equivalent to one cu ft of gas at reservoir conditions of temperature and pressure, F = .062 P - 4 Pressure (P) measured in psia. The equation for the gas volume factor presented above is based on a direct measurement of a sample of the gas and is a correction of that used in the original paper. The gravity of the oil produced is from 32 to 34" API. CALCULATION OF INITIAL OIL IN PLACE The Jones Sand production history is interesting because it lends itself to analysis by material balance. Production statistics from discovery of the Jones Sand through 1949 and material balance calculations of the initial stock tank oil in place are shown in Table I. The usual procedure in testing the application of material balance calculations is to compute the apparent initial volume of oil in place, using production and pressure information obtained at different time periods. If the apparent oil in place volumes computed increase with successive time periods, water encroachment is indicated and approximations must be mads to correct for its influence. The first requirement in utilizing such calculations is reliable reservoir pressure, accumulated gas, oil and water production, and PVT data. Phosphate deposits are distributed widely over the earth's surface. Of the known areas of deposit, eight fields are of particular interest because of their vast reserves of high grade phosphatic material and the volume of their production that goes to the world's great consuming areas. These fields, in the order of their present economic importance, are situated respectively in Florida, French Morocco, Kola Peninsula of U.S.S.R., Tunisia and Algeria, Tennessee, Mon- tana-Idaho-Wyoming-Utah, Ocean and Naru Islands in the Gilbert group, and in Egypt. The Rocky Mountain deposits have a comparatively low ranking in the phosphate trade of today, but this field contains one of the largest known reserves of phosphatic material, associated with which are recoverable trace minerals, which are of increasing importance in our national economy. The first discoveries of phosphate rock in the western states were recorded in Cache1 and Rich² counties in Utah, respectively in 1889 and 1897. Mining operations were begun on these deposits near Montpelier, Idaho, in 1906. During the latter year geological studies of the phosphate beds were started by Weeks and Ferrier of the U. S. Geological Survey. These studies have been continued to the present day by a distinguished roster of the Survey's technicians. ACTIVE participation by the United States in the war acted as a stimulant on the Annual Institute Meeting in New York rather than a retardant as feared. Attendance was about 10 per cent under the all-time high reached last year, but considering the number of men who could not possibly come because of active military service and the additional number who are devoting their whole time and effort to turning out vital war materials, the registration was really greater than might have been expected. But all in all the Institute put on a show that taxed the capacity of the Engineering Societies Building as well as the capacity of the visitors to find time to attend everything that promised to be of interest.

Swedish mining companies are noted for their excellence in underground mining practice, and this classification certainly has to be applied to their design of crushing plants also. All these mines are highly mechanized with either rail or truck haulage, and typical examples of underground crushing plants designed for each of these haulage practices are presented here. Almost all the primary breakers are of the overhead eccentric, single- toggle jaw crusher type with units as large as 55 by 71 in. (1400 by 1800 mm) being used. In contrast to North America, where jaw crushers are almost always preceded by apron or vibrating feeders, many of the. Swedish crushers are choke fed with the dump pocket being located directly above the crusher. This practice results both from excellent knowledge of the ore characteristics and the ability of the overhead eccentric crusher to also act as a feeder. An excellent example of a crushing plant of this design is shown by the sketch of the LKAB Alliansen Crusher No. 64 at Malmberget, Sweden. Forty-six st (42 mt) trucks dump magnetite ore into a 91.6 cu yd (70 m3) dump pocket mounted over a 55 by 71 in (1400 by 1800 mm) Morgards- hammar overhead eccentric crusher using a 180 hp (132 kw) motor and belt drive. Crushed ore at 10 in. (250 mm) size drops onto an air- operated tipping chute which diverts the ore to either of two 1962 cu yd (1500 m3) pockets equipped with 3 ft 11 in. by 7 ft 11 in. (1200 by 2000 mm) Schenk vibrating feeders. Dust is drawn into a wet scrubber and exhaust air is combined with mine exhaust air. Because the crusher must be assembled underground, a 45/5 ton crane is installed over the crushing installation. A crusher above ground such as at Sacaton can easily utilize a smaller crane. Capacity of this 'most interesting crushing installation is 1653 st (1500 mtph) .

INVESTIGATIONS on the above topic have recently been published by Shapiro and Kraussl and Jana and wayman in this journal and by Kessler and Pitsch.- Parts of the results in these papers are in good agreement with each other but there are also some results which are substantially different. The main points of these differences shall be briefly discussed in this communication. Shapiro and Krauss' measured single-surface traces of the habit planes of reversed austenite plates formed within the martensite crystals and deduced from these measurements two distinct habit planes A = (0.174; 0.309; 0.935) and B = (0.375; 0.545; 0.749) within 3 deg. Kessler and pitsch4 found instead by two-surface analysis7 one habit plane n = {0.23; 0.62: 0.75) with a real scatter of 6 deg. The latter observation of a single habit plane apart from a certain scatter is in agreement with most of the investigations of martensite transformations. The differences between these two results are so great that they cannot be explained by experimental error. The purpose of this communication is to show that the A- and B-poles of Shapiro and Krauss are due to an erroneous interpretation of a single-surface trace analysis. The difficulties in the interpretation of such single-surface trace analyses are due to the high symmetry of cubic lattices, from which it follows that there are in general twenty-four equivalent possibilities of plotting a single-surface trace in a pole figure. All these possibilities must be taken into account, when putting different traces from different plates together in order to construct the habit plane. Alternatively the poles of all the traces may be plotted in a unit triangle. This is done in Fig. 1 with twenty-nine traces of different reversed austenite plates, all of this were measured by Shapiro and Krauss in the same plane of a single martensite ther traces taken from Fig. 13 in the Shapiro and Krauss paper' which were determined by electron diffraction. The traces in Figs. 1 and 2 have to be compared with the habits A, B, and n which are under discussion. Therefore the great circles of the poles A, B, and n are plotted in Figs. 3, 4, and 5 together with a 3-deg scatter region for poles A, B and a 6-deg scatter region for pole n. Less than two years ago, the, Congress, with broad bipartisan support, passed the Energy Security Act of 1980. A decade marked by ten- fold increases in world oil prices and two major interruptions in oil flows from the Middle East had ended. An all-out national commitment to transform America's vast tar sands, oil shale and coal resources into conventional fuels had begun. The national synfuels effort was to be public-private cooperation at a scale unmatched in peace time. Private industry would own and operate the synthetic fuels facilities. Government would reduce market uncertainties to acceptable levels. The potential government commitment was substantial. Up to $88 billion would be available through the Synthetic Fuels Corporation, principally in the form of contingent financing. Billions more would be spent through Department of Energy programs. Additional incentives for alternate energy development were contained in the Energy Tax Act of 1978. The Energy Security Act clearly specified national synthetic fuels production objectives: 500,000 barrels per day by 1987 -- 2 million barrels per day by 1992. Finally, said Congress, Uncle Sam was going to do something about rapidly rising oil prices, uncertainties of energy supply, and the resulting disruption to the U. S. economy. Simply put, the purpose of the Energy Security Act of 1980 was to provide government guarantees sufficient to get synthetic fuels projects off the private sector drawing boards and into commercial production. Because of their huge cost, technological uncertainty, and lengthy pay-out period, these projects were always second place to projects of smaller size, known technology and more rapid pay-out. The Energy Security Act was the legal expression of public policy to bring the free-market synfuels timetable into line with the faster paced political timetable in the interest of national energy security.

In selecting a particular stripping method the ultimate aim is the removal of material at the least possible cost. Accomplishment of this goal requires the careful consideration of many factors including geologic and topographic information, proximity of the stripping operation to waste disposal areas, possible problems of land reclamation, types of suitable equipment available, and auxiliary equipment requirements. 4.2-1. Selection of Stripping Methods. The size of an orebody and the distribution of values within that orebody normally will limit the variety of economical stripping methods which need to be considered. Much may depend upon the selectivity required in the mining due to the relationship between ore and overburden, as well as the character of the overburden itself. The following factors concerning the geologic nature and environment of an orebody, as well as the production requirements, must be determined before any selection of equipment is made: 1. The size of the orebody and distribution of the values within that orebody. Is the ore massive or scattered, bedded or disseminated, thick or thin? 2. The nature of the overburden to be removed. Is it a hard dense rock, bedded rock (thick or thin), friable material, earth, sand, elay, marsh, etc.? 3. The character and significance of geologic structures (fractures, faults, shear zones, etc.) associated with the ore occurrence. Are there water bearing formations with resulting water disposal problems? 4. In considering the nature of the overburden, including its alteration products, the physical or chemical conditions which, when combined with anticipated climatic conditions, may render certain equipment inoperable during unfavorable seasons.

Although the crystallography of lattice transformations has been studied extensively during the past few years, these studies have been limited, with few exceptions1'2, to specimens in which the transformed lattice appears as a segregate phase. A realization of the technical importance of the segregation mechanism, especially in the formation of martensitic structures and in age-hardening phenomena, has undoubtedly stimulated research in this direction. In the crystallographic studies of segregation, the general problem has been to relate the orientation of the parent crystal to that of the segregate crystals. The technique has been complicated by the fact that it has been necessary to deal with the presence of as many as 24 ideal segregate orientations within one parent lattice; furthermore, the segregate lattices are invariably scattered (seldom less than ±2º, often as much as 15" or 20') about these ideal positions. It is probable that a more complete picture of phase transformations may result from a study in which complete lattice relationships between individual grains are evaluated, thereby providing an additional parameter which when it is necessary to work with multiple segregate orientations, cannot be evaluated. The present paper presents the results of such a study, ? wherein a peritectic reaction is made use of to produce the transformed lattices.
