1 HE superplastic behavior of the eutectoid A1-78 wt pct Zn alloy has been thoroughly investigated by Back-ofen et al.' The superplastic elongations and the marked resistance to necking were rationalized in terms of high strain rate sensitivity. In a subsequent paper2 superplastic behavior was formulated to show Nabarro-Herring diffusional creep as rate controlling at low strain rates, giving way to a dislocation climb process at higher strain rates. In a paper devoted to an interpretation of superplasticity in two-phase alloys, Packer and sherby3 have included the results of an examination of the structure of an Al-Zn eutectoid specimen before and after superplastic deformation. No significant change in grain size or directionality was observed in the deformed microstructures. This one observation led the authors3 to suggest that con- tinuous recrystallization or grain boundary migration was responsible for superplasticity. The purpose of this note is to report our observations on the superplastic behavior of the Al-Zn eutectoid alloy which differ in certain respects from works previously reported. Following Hayden et al., the results are discussed in terms of dislocation climb as the important factor during superplastic deformation. A heat of nominally high (99.995) purity 22 wt pct A1-78 wt pct Zn was induction-melted and cast into a 0.5 by 6 by 12 in. slab. The slab was heated to 350°C and rolled to 1/8-in.-thick plate. The plate was then cold-rolled to 0.040-in. thickness, annealed at 35OaC, and rolled to the final thickness of 0.020 in.* Speci-

Thermal-expansion and electrical-resistivity measurements have been carried out below 400°K on niobium and two niobium alloys containing tungsten. For anonaly in the expansion us temperature curve below aboct 300°K. This reslt is consistent with an earlier obsercation that Young's modilus joy Cb-132 lms an unusiully strong -tenperati-e dependence below roon temperature. No anonulous behavior was observed in the resistiuity vs temperature curve for either alloy or in the magnetic susceptibility us tenperature curve for Cb-132. These results are disclssed in terms of various electronic and bonding theories of the transition metals and their alloys, but it has not been possible to reach any definite conclusion as to the cause of the results obtained. ALONG with investigations of the low-temperature mechanical behavior of niobium and its alloys, some of the physical properties of these materials have also been studied. In the work described here, thermal expansion and electrical resistivity were measured below 400°K for niobium and two of its alloys, Cb-132 and D-43. In addition, the magnetic susceptibility of Cb-132 was measured over the same temperature range. The alloys are representative of two distinct tion-hardened alloy such as might find service as a turbine blade, while D-43 (Nb, 5.3 at. pct W, 1.1 at. pct Zr. and 0.08 at. pct C) is a solution- and dispersion-hardened alloy, of considerably lower strength than Cb-132. which is a potential vane material. Their significant common feature is the presence of tungsten as the principal source of solution hardening. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Thermal-expansion measurements were made with a quartz-tube dilatometer using baths of liquid nitrogen, liquid bromoethane, and a liquid polyalkylene glycol derivative to cover the range 80 to 400 K. Results are recorded as expansion relative to that of quartz, and the probable maximum error in any value of relative expansion. All, is about il pct. The metallurgical condition of the specimens, which were in rod form. will be discussed in the section dealing with experimental results. Resistivity was measured on recrystallized wires 0.030 in. in diam using a potentiometric technique. The same baths were used for temperatures between 80' and 400°K as were used for the expansion measurements. and in addition the resistance of D-43 and Cb-132 was measured at 4.2 K by immersion in liquid helium. The maximum expected experimental error in any resistivity value is about 3 pct and that in any change in resistivity about i0.05 pct. Temperatures in both sets of experiments were measured with liquid-in-glass thermometers with an accuracy usually better than 1°K. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS 1) Thermal Expansion. In Fig. 1 is shown the relative linear expansion of recrystallized niobium. D-43. and Cb-132. The curve for Cb-132 is composed of results from several runs on three different samples. Two of the samples were annealed for an hour at 1500°C to cause recrystallization and the third was annealed for an hour at 2000'C to remove some mi-crosegregation of tungsten which was known to be present in the wrought alloy received from the manu-

Two Also 3 1/2-ton motor trucks were used by Young Bros. while operating at the Mammoth Collins mine at Shultz, Ariz. One was equipped with an oil tank holding 1,075 gal. and was used for the transportation of "tops." The other was fitted with a stake body and used to carry machinery, wood, rails, pipe and all classes of miscellaneous supplies. The bodies were made of oak with maple flooring and were attached to the frame of the chassis by U-bolts, to avoid drilling the main members of the frame. Most of the hauling was done from Tucson, a distance of 47 1/2 miles. During the first 3 months, part of the road was in very bad condition and the tire cost was excessive. After this part was repaired the road was in fair condition, but never good. There were no excessive grades or bad sand, but wagon ruts, too narrow for the truck wheels and of a different gage, caused heavy tire loss; while chuck holes, sharp curves and stones, both imbedded and loose, were objectionable features. During wet weather the trucks could not get sufficient traction to climb some of the hills and were likely to stick in the mud in certain places, so that no attempt was made to run them unless they were on the' road when the rain started. This lost time amounted to about 5 per cent. of the total, but, whenever possible, it was utilized in making minor repairs. The price of gasoline was from 17 to 21 c. per gal. Rubber tires were used throughout. Drivers were said $4.50 to $5 per shift, and a return trip to Tucson was counted as two shifts even when made in one day. Drivers were provided with a room in Tucson and were paid for a11 time lost due to causes beyond their control. Trucks were loaded one way only. Speedometers were placed on both trucks but the excessive vibration soon caused them to fail. For this reason, and because no account was taken of the distance covered in picking up a miscellaneous load or in other minor ways, the mileage given is under the actual distance traveled. Some of the weights had to be estimated, but care was taken to have the number of ton-miles low rather than high, to avoid underestimating the costs. TO show the vital importance of our future oil supplies to our economy, I will merely point out that this country, with something like 15 per cent of the world's land area and something like 7 per cent of the world's population normally uses between 65 and 70 per cent of the motor vehicles of the world, between 65 and 70 per cent of the world's rubber, and produces and refines between 65 and 70 per cent of the world's petroleum. Despite all the arguments as to which is cause and which is effect, all will agree that all three of these important industries are mutually dependent. If we had not been able to produce 65 or 70 per cent of the world's oil in this country we would not have the degree of mechanization, or the efficiency of transportation, or the high industrialization that we enjoy. Furthermore, the fact that oil has been plentiful and cheap has had a tremendous effect on all the things in which we as engineers are interested. For that reason, if for no other, it is well to look ahead to see what the outlook is for the near and far-distant future.

The rediffraction of Bragg diffracted beams by differently oriented regions (such as twins) of a crystal may give rise to "extra" reflections or reciprocal lattice points. These two papers are concerned with predicting these additional reflections which result from twin related regions of a lattice. Analysis is made for {111}fcc twins, (112)bcc twins, and {hkil}hcp twins. It is first required, knowing the specific variant of the twinning plane in each case, to predict the positions of the twin reflections relative to the matrix reciprocal lattice. Once this is done, the positions of the "extra" multiply diffracted reflections may be deduced. Part I is devoted to establishing "selection ru1es" for twinning, i.e., the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of twinned reciprocal lattice points. 1. INTRODUCTION. Transmission electron diffraction patterns are frequently complicated by multiply diffracted beams. Pashley and stowell1 have recently demonstrated that certain extra reflections in evapo- rated films of gold result from the rediffraction of matrix Bragg diffracted beams by (111) microtwins in the gold. It was previously (and erroneously) suggested 2,3 that observed "irrational" reflections in fine-grained gold were due to the presence of some hcp gold. A similar situation exists, apparently, for some bcc materials; fine (112) twins in bcc martensite in Fe-Ni alloys4 give rise to extra reflections. There are many other examples. The number of transmission electron microscopic investigations is continually increasing, and because of the importance of double (and multiple) diffraction in the interpretation of diffraction patterns, it was judged that a detailed elaboration of the principles involved is desirable, as well as the extension of these principles in reasonably closed form to other crystal structures, particularly bcc and hcp. The present analysis considers double diffraction caused by (111) twins in fcc metals, (112) twins in bcc metals, and {hkil} = {hkl) twins in hcp metals. For each case of twinning, the various possible (variants of) twins give rise to a set of interpenetrating reciprocal lattices. The relative spatial arrangements of these reciprocal lattices can be deduced (Part I) and are expressed in terms of simple "selection rules". The resulting sets of interpenetrating reciprocal lattices are then analyzed for possible doubly diffracted reflections (Part II). The notation used, and some important formulas are given in Appendices I and 11.

As fluids move through a wellbore, there is transfer of heat between fluids and the earth due to the diflerence between fluid and geothermal temperatures. This type of heat transmission is involved in drilling and in all producing operations. In certain cases, quantitative knowledge of wellbore heat transmission is very important. This paper presents an approximate solution to the wellbore heat-transmission problem involved in injection of hot or cold fluids. The solution permits estimation of the temperature of fluids, tubing and casing as a function of depth and time. The result is expressed in simple algebraic form suitable for slide-rule calculation. The solution assumes that heat transfer in the wellbore is steady-state, while heat transfer to the earth will be unsteady radial conduction. Allowance is made for heat resistances in the wellbore. The method used may be applied to derivation of other heat problems such as flow through multiple strings in a wellbore. Comparisons of computed and field results are presented to establish the usefulness of the solution. INTRODUCTION During the past few years, considerable interest has been generated in hot-fluid-injection oil-recovery methods. These methods depend upon application of heat to a reservoir by means of a heat-transfer medium heated at the surface. Clearly, heat losses between the surface and the injection interval could be extremely important to this process. Not quite so obvious is the fact that every injection and production operation is accompanied by transmission of heal between wellbore fluids and the earth. Previously, the interpretation of temperature logs',' has been the main purpose of wellbore heat studies. The only papers dealing specifically with long-time injection operations are those of Moss and White3 and Lesem, et al.' The purpose of the present study is to investigate wellbore heat transmission to provide engineering methods useful in both production and injection operations, and basic techniques useful in all wellbore heat-transmission problems. The approach is similar to that of Moss and White:' DEVELOPMENT The transient heat-transmission problem under consideration is as follows. Let us consider the injection of a fluid down the tubing in a well which is cased to the top of the injection interval. Assuming fluid is injected at known rates and surface temperatures, determine the temperature of the injected fluid as a function of depth anti time. Consideration of the heat transferred from the injected fluid to the formation leads to the following equations. For liquid, Eqs. 1, 1A and 2 are developed in the Appendix. These equations were developed under the assumption that physical and thermal properties of the earth and wellbore fluids do not vary with temperature, that heat will transfer radially in the earth and that heat transmission in the wellbore is rapid compared to heat flow in the formation and. thus, can be represented by steady-state solutions. Special cases of this development have been presented by Nowakl and Moss and White.3 Both references are recommended for excellent background material. Nowak' presents very useful information concerning the effect of a shut-in period on subsequent temperatures. Since one purpose of this paper is to present methods which may be used to derive approximate solutions for heat-transmission problems associated to those specifically considered here, a brief discussion of associated heat problems is also presented in the Appendix. Analysis of the derivation presented in the Appendix will indicate that many terms can be re-defined to modify the solution for application to other problems. Before Eqs. 1, 1A and 2 can be used, it is necessary to consider the significance of the over-all heat-transfer coefficient U and the time function f(t). Thorough discussions of the concept of the over-all heat-transfer coefficient may be found in many references on heat transmission. See McAdams5 or Jakob," for example. Briefly, the over-all coefficient U considers the net- resistance to heat flow offered by fluid inside the tubing, the tubing wall, fluids or solids in the annulus, and the casing wall. The effect of radiant heat transfer from the tubing to the casing and resistance to heat flow caused by scale or wax on the tubing or casing may also be included in the over-all coefficient. According to McAdams, on page 136 of Ref. 5>

THE Bureau of Mines has been charged by Congress to investigate processes for the production of alumina from low-grade bauxite, alunite, and clay. As one part of the program, an investigation of the application of ore-dressing methods to improve the grade of high-silica bauxite is in progress at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station at Rolla, Mo. This paper summarizes data obtained so far and presents detailed results of tests on four typical samples. MINERALOGY OF BAUXITE The name bauxite originally was used to designate the dihydrous aluminum oxide (A1203.2H20). The designation has been retained, although the existence of a specific mineral of such composition has been disproved. The term is now applied to ores of aluminum consisting of various mixtures of the minerals gibbsite (A1203.3H20), diaspore (A1203.H20), and boehmite (A1203.H20). The predominant hydrous aluminum oxide in most American bauxite, however, is gibbsite. In some instances bauxite may be amorphous mixtures of the hydrous aluminum oxides that approximate the composition of dihydrous aluminum oxide (A1203.2H20). The proposed name for this material is cliachite. Gibbsite and boehmite, the trihydrate and monohydrate, are soluble in a solution of sodium hydroxide at elevated temperature and pressure, whereas diaspore is practically insoluble. The solubility of these two minerals is the basis of the Bayer process of alumina extraction. All bauxites contain certain impurities, the commonest of which, in the order of their importance, are: silica, principally as a constituent of kaolinite, and to a lesser extent as quartz; iron, as hematite, limonite, and siderite; and titanium, as ilmenite, rutile and leucoxene. Minor impurities are zircon, cobalt and nickel. Bauxite is produced commercially in Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee, but the most important deposits in the United States are in Arkansas, in the vicinity of Little Rock. HISTORY OF BAUXITE BENEFICIATION The literature on bauxite beneficiation is limited, but the reports of Gandrud and DeVaney1 and Clemmer, Clemmons, and Stacy2 show the possibilities of flotation as a means of beneficiating bauxite. The adsorption density of hexyl mercaptan was measured at the gold-solution and the gold-vapor interfaces. This collector is strongly adsorbed at low concentrations, a monomolecular layer being formed at the gold-solution interface at concentrations as low as 2 x 10'6 moles per liter. A maximum contact angle of 83 ± 3° is observed. From a thermodynamic analysis of the experimental data the changes in surface tension at the gold-gas and gold-solution interface are calculated. The data also suggest that the adsorption density of mercaptan at the gold-gas interface exceeds that at the gold-solution interface. In the equilibrium state, a simple flotation system consists of three phases, the solid to be floated, air, and an aqueous solution in stable contact along a line. During the process leading to this final state, a solid-gas interface is created at the expense of a portion of the liquid-gas and solid-liquid interfaces. This change of state is achieved by addition of a collector and, if necessary, suitable modifying agents to the system. By a combined application of the Gibbs Adsorption and the Young Equations, de Bruyn, Overbeek and Schuhmannl were able to show theoretically that the equilibrium distribution of the collector at all three interfaces determines the magnitude of the contact angle. Their analysis led them to conclude that the equilibrium adsorption density of the collector at the solid-gas interface exceeds its density at the solid- liquid interface. This paper succeeded in focussing attention on the neglected role of the solid-gas interface in flotation. In recent years the application of radiotracer, infrared, electrochemical and electro-kinetic techniques to studies of the solid-liquid interface2-5 enhanced our understanding of adsorption processes at this interface. Except for the measurement of contact angles, the solid-gas interface received no attention in fundamental flotation studies. In an attempt to apply the analysis of de Bruyn, Overbeek and Schuhmann to a simple flotation system, an investigation of the adsorption of hexyl mercaptan onto gold was undertaken. Gold was chosen as the solid phase in order to keep the number of dissolved chemical species in the solution phase to a minimum. Hexyl mercaptan (1 - hexanethiol) was selected as collector because its relatively high vapor pressure at room temperature makes it possible to obtain adsorption measurements at the solid-gas interface. This flotation system consists, therefore, of a pure solid phase (gold), an aqueous solution of a weakly dissociated collector (1 -hexanethiol), and a gaseous phase, nitrogen saturated with respect to both water vapor and mercaptan vapor. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND METHODS Materials: Liquid 1-hexanethiol (C6H13SH) was obtained from Distillation Products Industries and was further purified by double distillation. The purity of the final product was established by boiling point and refractive index measurements. For the adsorption studies from aqueous solution, the radiotracer element, sulfur-35, (half life 87.1 days, 0.169 Mev beta ray) was synthesized into the mercaptan by Tracerlab Inc., Boston, Mass. A close boiling fraction of the synthesized compound was used in the adsorption studies. The specific activity of the radioactive compound was 10 millicuries per gram.

THE annual dinner-dance was held in the large ball room of the Commodore hotel Wednesday evening. A total of 577 were seated at the dinner, over which President Eavenson presided as chairman and toastmaster. In introducing George C. Stone, the James Douglas Medalist, W. R. Ingalls outlined the former's association with the zinc industry. He said, in part In designing and building Palmerton, Stone erected a metallurgical monument and won the title of chief engineer of the New Jersey Zinc Co., with transferal to its New York office in 1900. There lie held forth in dignity, efficiency, and with appreciation until his retirement from active service in 1929. After a few years lie was diverted from the position of chief engineer for his company to the superior one of chief metallurgist and that gave to Stone his next big chance.... This was the conception of a research department and the ability to persuade his directors to adopt it. I shall not pretend to summarize the great things that afterward developed. I shall mention only the institution of the manufacture of lithopone in this country, the charging of the Wetherill furnace with briquets, the mechanicalization of the Wetherills, the accomplishment of continuous distilling, and most recently the introduction of reflux-refining.

When calculating the pressure-volume characteristics of projected mine-ventilating circuits by orthodox methods, certain basic assumptions are required in order to employ the various available empirical data. It is assumed, for example, that the mine air is an incompressible fluid subjected to isothermal flow, an assumption sufficiently accurate for practical purposes since pressure and temperature differentials are small throughout the average circuit. A more erroneous assumption, however, is that all air is accounted for as it travels throughout the mine. No attempt is usually made to evaluate stopping leakage as it occurs; instead, the air volume required at the last crosscuts is assumed to enter the mine, travel the various intake air courses intact, sweep the workings and travel out by the return air courses to the point or points of exit from the mine. Actually, there is a leakage of air from intake to return at every stopping, the quantity of this leakage depending upon the tightness of the stopping and the pressure difference across the stopping. Unfortunately, a lack of empirical data and knowledge of the condition of individual stoppings makes an exact analysis of underground stopping leakage impossible. Generally, leakage is most severe through the old stoppings outbye the circuit. These are also subjected to higher pressure differences than the newer inbye stoppings. Therefore the circuit air volume diminishes at a decreasing rate progressing from outbye to inbye the circuit. Consider a simple mine circuit consisting of one intake and one return air course, each of equal and uniform section area and interconnected at regular intervals with crosscuts equipped with stoppings. At any point X inbye the circuit the air volume q on the intake air course equals that on the return air course and decreases with diminishing rate from outbye to inbye the circuit between the limits of Q1 completely outbye and Q completely inbye. Such a volume change is represented by curve a, Fig. I, which is computed with the aid of the equation q = Q1- (Q1- Q)(X + L)N. This equation results from the general algebraic equation of form q = k, — kXN after solving for kl and k with the knowledge that completely outbye X = o and q = QL, also completely inbye X = L and q = Q. Curves a, b and c, Fig. I, show values of q as ordinates versus values of X as abscissas, for values of N equal to 0.50, 1.00 and 2.00, respectively. Distribution of underground stopping 1eakage directly affects the air-volume distribution along the circuit, which in turn determines the circuit pressure gradient. To deliver any required air volume inbye a circuit or portion thereof requires a higher circuit-pressure differential if stoppings leak than is necessary with tight stoppings. Every mining engineer engaged in the analysis of projected mine-ventilation circuits is therefore confronted with the problem of making proper allowance for the effects of leaking stoppings. Such a volume change is represented by curve a, Fig. I, which is computed with the aid of the equation q = Q1- (Q1- Q)(X + L)N. This equation results from the general algebraic equation of form q = k, — kXN after solving for kl and k with the knowledge that completely outbye X = o and q = QL, also completely inbye X = L and q = Q. Curves a, b and c, Fig. I, show values of q as ordinates versus values of X as abscissas, for values of N equal to 0.50, 1.00 and 2.00, respectively. Distribution of underground stopping 1eakage directly affects the air-volume distribution along the circuit, which in turn determines the circuit pressure gradient. To deliver any required air volume inbye a circuit or portion thereof requires a higher circuit-pressure differential if stoppings leak than is necessary with tight stoppings. Every mining engineer engaged in the analysis of projected mine-ventilation circuits is therefore confronted with the problem of making proper allowance for the effects of leaking stoppings. INTRODUCTION Lac Minerals Ltd., a significant North American producer of gold and other metals for over three decades, recently completed the financing for its third discovery in an eight year period. From 1975 to 1982, three important gold deposits in Quebec and Ontario: namely Bousquet, Doyon and Hemlo, were located and tested by company geologists. When current development plans are complete, Lac will have injected $400 million into these deposits. A discussion of these projects and their financing reveals some extraordinary challenges faced by top mining management. Responses to these challenges developed by Lac management may interest executives planning to proceed with new North American gold or base metal mines. MINE DE BOUSQUET In 1976, we explored a property containing a large low grade surface gold deposit. The geologial setting was exciting and we tested recent rethinking about the volcanigenic genesis of gold and base metal occurrences. These ideas helped pus to persist in drilling a nearby conductor and 600,000 ton, 0.22 ounce/ton orebody was outlined. With gold at $Cdn.150 per ounce the feasibility was approved and work started February 1978. Availability of a company custom mill 35 miles away reduced our immediate capital needs to $8.5 million. First of all, understanding the geological significance of results at Bousquet was critical. Mine and surface exploration geologists at Lac are continually and closely working together to better understand the nature of gold deposits in the Shield. This management emphasis on both pure and mine geology meant that a much larger ore reserve could confidently be predicted. (A proposal to quickly develop and ship the ore to a nearby company mine was discarded.) Instead of designing just for the initial plan of 500 tons per day we therefore included headframe, shaft and hoisting capacity for 1,700 tons and provided a compartment for future shaft deepening. These prebuilt additions were welcomed within two years. The type of collaboration whereby surface and mine geologists make study and field projects of each other's problems sets the foundation for this predictive ability. At Lac, the traditional responsibility for and supervision of the mine geologist by the mine manager is modified by this collaboration. This adds interest and scope to the geologist's work and lets him think beyond production requirements. Besides such management considerations, dedicated, professional geologists with integrity and lots of practical experience are needed to plan successful developments like Bousquet. Second, projecting future bullion revenue was critical and our experience selling production for future delivery gave us a way to ensure that loan repayment at term would not be jeopardized by falling metal prices. Output from a single mine is often reduced or curtailed for numerous reasons, so "selling forward" is done best and with least risk by companies like Lac with more than one or two producing locations for that metal. At first, a forward marketing program was considered unwise, speculative and unorthodox by analysts and other producers. Declining markets in the early 1980s prolonged gold project capital recoveries however, and critics were better able to appreciate the usefulness of such a tool. The notion that gold miners shouldn't sell forward is rooted in the belief that long-run gold prices will rise as modern social theory implementation in democracies inevitably erodes currency values. Selling against this trend goes against this industry belief or "ethic" and is at odds with the company shareholder who expects the gold price to rise not fall. Nonetheless, an efficient tool is available to the gold producer (not to most other metal producers) to quickly disengage from adverse price trends or to lock in spot prices instantaneously for two years or more of profits. The data which are collected in Table 1 show that the ferrite of low-carbon steel and of electrolytic iron, like the network of hypo- and hyper-eutectoid carbon steel, inherits, either absolutely or relatively, the grain size of the mother austenite from which it is born in cooling through the transformation range. This evidence is so abundant and concordant as to cast doubt on Prof. Jeffries'l hypothesis of what might be called reversed inheritance, by which he explains Mr. Ruder's observation2 that a grain in a "slug of pressed pure electrolytic iron powder" was coarser, perhaps 1,500,000p2, aftcr a 3-hr. exposure to 1000" C. than after a 3-hr. exposure to 1250-1300°, when the grain size was about 35,000µ2. His explanation implies a natural tendency of coarser austenite grains to yield finer ferrite ones than spring from finer austenite grains, so that the inheritance is reversed. What seems to me a simpler explanation is that the enormous grains which followed the 1000" heating were not inherited from the mother austenite, but were formed by the process of natal coarsening, by means of which Stead and Carpenter developed grains of this same order of magnitude in this same kind of material, on heating to 950" or to 1000°, the temperature used by Mr. Ruder, provided the exposure was not unduly prolonged, and it does not seem to have been in Mr. Ruder's case. That their coarsening was natal and not through inheritance is shown first by the fact that their grain coarseness was out of all proportion to their relatively low temperatures and short periods, and hence was very far in excess of the grain size which the mother austenite must have had, and second and more cogently by the fact that the shape of these coarsened grains was evidently determined by the temperature distribution which existed during and immediately after the Ar3 transformation, that during the passage from the gamma to the non-gamma state. The Mineral Resources Institute and State Mine Experiment Station of the University of Alabama conducted Humphreys spiral tests on fine coal waste from nine preparation plants of Alabama strip mining operations to determine the feasibility of recovering low ash and sulfur fuel meeting steam coal specifications. The ash in the samples ranged from 9 - 5l%, and the total sulfur ranged from 0.4J- 2.39%. Continuous laboratory tests using a Humphreys spiral gave good recovery of the coal with excellent rejection of the ash and pyritic sulfur. Coal recoveries of 83.6 - 94.1% were achieved from the different samples. Ash content of the clean coal products fell within a range of 5 - 12.2%, with a total sulfur content of 0.62 and 1.10%. In quality, the products were comparable or superior to those now being shipped from the preparation plants.

The suppression of the austenite-martensite transformation that can be brought about by the addition of certain alloying elements, such as manganese or nickel, to plain carbon steel has been known for a long time, especially since Guillet's investigation at the beginning of this century. The extent to which the critical range is lowered depends upon the percentage and nature of the special element added. First the Arl point is lowered gradually, then at a certain percentage a sudden lowering to about 300" C. occurs. The addition of still larger percentages of the alloy may result in lowering the Ar, point to room temperature or below, in which case the steel remains austenitic at room temperature, especially after rapid cooling. The effect of alloying elements of this general type on the lowering of the transformation temperature is well illustrated by Sauveur(lJ$ in his Fig. 281a, reproduced here as Fig. 1. This type of curve is characteristic of both manganese and nickel though it requires about 21/2 times as much nickel as of manganese to produce the same result. The influence of nickel in retarding the transformation of austenite into the lower transition constituents is due to its lowering of the critical range of the steel, which is also well illustrated by Sauveur'l) (after Osmond) in his Fig. 284, reproduced here as Fig. 2. Scott('" presents a diagram illustrating the effect of manganese on the Ac3 and Ara points which is strikingly similar to the diagram above referred to in Fig. 2 concerning the effect of nickel. Lowering the critical range has the effect of increasing the viscosity, or, rigidity, of the alloy at the time when it is undergoing its transformation, which greatly slows down the transformation reaction velocity, and this, in turn, makes it easier to suppress, wholly or in part, the transformational changes. IT as long been recognized that there is a need for accurate systematic data on diffusion in solids. Originally, such data were needed to check existing theories but, more recently, it would appear that it could be used most advantageously as a guide to, or a check for, much needed extensions of the theory of diffusion. The awareness of the conditions which are important to experimental accuracy, the availability of the materials for accurate experiments, and the techniques have improved to the extent that it would now seem to an experimentalist that, unless extensions of the theory are made which take into account the fundamental parameters of the atoms, the electrons, and the lattice in some detail, the field of diffusion will rapidly become an empirical or semi-empirical field. The present series of experiments was designed to provide accurate data on the diffusion of the elements of the IB and IIB subgroups in silver; that is, to provide data on the diffusion in silver of three face-centered-cubic elements with roughly similar chemical properties, but with different atomic or ionic sizes and, similarly, for three noncubic elements. The elements of these two subgroups have different valences, so that the data will not give any significant information on differences due to the crystal structure of the solute. The present paper reports data on the diffusion of copper and mercury in single crystals of silver; the data for the other elements of the IB and IIB subgroups were reported previously by the authors1'2 and by Tomizuka and Slifkin.8 Experiment The general technique used was identical to that previously described1,2 and will not be repeated here. In all cases, the sectioning technique and high specific activity isotopes" were used. The short half-life of Cu64 made decay corrections more important than for the other isotopes, and necessitated around the clock shifts while data were being taken. Each section was counted at least twice (as was true for all longer half-life isotopes) and a monitor was counted along with each sample. Data for the diffusion of mercury in silver are presented at a greater number of temperatures than for the other solutes. This is a result of two circumstances. First, six (of 30) samples had to be discarded because of pitting or recrystallization which occurred during the diffusion runs, even though the samples had sustained high temperature prediffusion anneals. Either of these was a very rare phenomenon in the other experiments, and their occurrence in this case is considered in more detail below. Second, the curves of the logarithm of the activity of the sections vs the square of the penetration deptht were, in general, quite good, but frequently seemed to show one point to have high activity and the next point to have slightly low activity in terms of the best straight line. When this occurred, there was remarkable regularity of the high-low sequence. In any event, the results, as far as diffusion coefficients are concerned, were not affected by this amalgam effect. In fact, the mercury data had the highest internal consistency of any of the data. Results Diffusion of Copper in Silver—-Diffusion runs were made at eight temperatures In the temperature range from 700° to 950°C, for times ranging from 5 to 45 hr. An annual invitational address by an outstanding man in mining, geology, or geophysics who has contributed significantly to the progress of technology in these fields. IN 1954, the first year the award was conferred, Fred Searles, Jr., remarked, "The earlier years are the easiest." In this, the second year, it was easy to choose the outstanding mining engineer. Our conferee this year has been destined to mine. He comes from pioneer stock, and though a son of the American Revolution he is most proud that all four of his grandparents came to the Jordan River Valley of Utah the "first summer," which all Utahns will recognize as 1847. At the time of discovery of high-grade ore in Bingham, his grandfather, Archibald Gardner, had a crew of men getting out saw timber in the area. The first claim staked in Bingham Canyon was named the Jordan, and Bishop Gardner was the colocator of the claim as well as the man to record it. E. D. Gardner was born in West Jordan, Utah, in view of Little Cottonwood Canyon, the site of the Emma Mine. Park City in the Wasatch Mountains a few dozen miles to the east, and Tintic, not much further to the south, were developing their vast ore-bodies throughout his youth. As a boy he was near the present Midvale metallurgical area and could see the Lark and Bingham Canyon mine dumps and imagine the mining activities at Tooele, Ophir, and Mercur just over the nearby Oquirrh Range. He was 11 years old when the first car of copper ore was shipped from Bingham Canyon. It was not surprising that he attended the University of Utah and graduated with an engineer of mines degree. Five years with the Utah Apex in Bingham Canyon as chief engineer and assistant superintendent completed his training for the 44 years of unselfish and lightly rewarded service he was to give the mining industry as a Government engineer. All of us in mining are familiar with the great work he carried on and directed during the genera- tion he supervised the Southwest Experimental Station at Tucson. He has written scores of papers and books. His observations and experiments on drilling and blasting have led to the important improvements in this field during the past quarter century. Whereas those of us who consider ourselves widely informed about underground metal mining methods make hasty trips through a half dozen or dozen mines a year, our conferee has visited them all—not only the metal mines, but also coal and hundreds of nonmetallic mines, in the United States, Canada, Latin America, and overseas. His keen observations and analytical mind have resulted in an encyclopedic knowledge of mining and mines. His improvements in mining technology have been steady and predictable. His elucidation of mining problems to the many young engineers that have come under his guidance have made them grow strong and useful to his industry. When he chooses to stop, his influence will continue to expand and prosper because of the inspiration and dedication he instilled in so many of us. The profits from his ideas have been distributed throughout the mining industry. He has remained a technical man who felt that he could serve the mining industry best as a Government engineer. But he is the staunchest advocate of the belief that the public should gain from his work through private industry. This is not the first recognition E. D. Gardner has received. The Department of the Interior awarded him the coveted Medal for Distinguished Service in October 1949, and he received the Engineering & Mining Journal's Salute in March 1951. His friends who are presenting him the Daniel C. Jackling Award today know this great mining engineer simply as "Ed" Gardner.
