The activity coefficient of plutonium in liquid magnesium, over the temperature range 650° to 800°C, was obtained from measurements of the distribution of plutoninm between a 50 mole pct MgC12-30 mole pct NaCl-20 mole pct KC1 molten-salt mixture and liquid Zn-Mg alloys. For dilute solutions (0.08 at. pct Pu) the activity coefficient of plutonium was found to vary from 10.1 at 650°C to 12.2 at 800°C. The activity coefficients of plutonium in dilute liquid solutions of plutonium in uranium, silver, lanthanum. cerium, and calcium were estimated to be. The distribution data indicate a value of about 0.1 at 800°C for the activity coefficient of PuCl3 dissolved in the above ternary salt mixture. LIQUID magnesium and several liquid alloys of magnesium with metals such as zinc and cadmium have been shown to be useful solvents in pyrochemical processes for the recovery of uranium and plutonium from discharged nuclear fuels,' and for the separation of transuranium elements.' The present study was undertaken to determine the activity coefficient of plutonium in liquid Pu-Mg alloys in support of process-development work. The activity coefficient of plutonium in liquid magnesium was determined from experimental data on the distribution of plutonium between a liquid ternary MgC12-NaC1-KC1 salt mixture and various liquid Zn-Mg alloys. The distribution data were used to calculate the ratio of the activity coefficients of plutonium in liquid zinc and in liquid magnesium. The activity coefficient of plutonium in liquid magnesium was then computed from the known activity coefficient of plutonium in liquid zinc. It was not necessary to know the thermodynamic properties of the molten-salt system explicitly. The major features of the Pu-Mg system have been reported by Schonfeld.3 At the temperatures of interest in the present study, i.e., above about 600°C, the phase diagram indicates the existence of a wide liquid-miscibility gap, with the plutonium-rich liquid containing about 8 at. pct Mg and the magnesium-rich liquid containing about 10 at. pct Pu at the intersection with the solidus regions. Additional data on the compositions of the two equilibrium liquid phases obtained in this laboratory4 have defined the miscibility gap up to the consolute temperature (at about 1040°C). EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND RESULTS Materials. The 50 mole pct MgC12-30 mole pct NaC1-20 mole pct KC1 salt mixture was prepared by melting the required proportions of reagent-grade NaCl and KC1 with anhydrous MgC12. The molten salt was then purified by contacting it with liquid Cd-30 wt pct Mg alloy (at 450°C) to reduce oxidizing impurities, followed by filtration through a stainless-steel frit (pore size, 65 µ) to remove solid MgO formed during the reduction. The purity specifications of the zinc, magnesium, and plutonium were 99.999, 99.8, and 99.85 pct, respectively. Apparatus. The liquid salt and metal were contained in a tantalum crucible inside a graphite secondary vessel. The crucible assembly was located inside a resistance-heated stainless-steel furnace tube. The furnace tube was closed by means of a stainless-steel cover, which was attached by bolts, with a neoprene O-ring serving as a gas-tight seal. The top of the furnace tube was water-cooled to protect the O-ring. The furnace-tube cover was provided with a tantalum thermowell, a tantalum stirrer, and a port through which sampling tubes could be inserted and materials could be added to the melt without admitting air to the furnace tube. Vacuum and an argon atmosphere were available through a side-arm on the furnace tube. The furnace temperature was regulated by a proportional controller that was actuated by a chromel-alumel thermocouple between the furnace tube and the heating elements of the furnace. The melt temperature was measured by means of a chromel-alumel thermocouple in the tantalum thermowell. The accuracy of temperature measurement was ±3°C. The salt and metal phases were intermixed by a motor-driven tantalum paddle positioned at the liquid interface. The tantalum crucible was provided with four baffles to increase the turbulence. The sampling tubes consisted of 1/4-in.-OD tantalum tubing that terminated in a tantalum frit (Kawecki Chemical Co.; average pore size, 30 µ). Procedure. The zinc, magnesium, plutonium, and salt were charged to the tantalum crucible; then the system was evacuated and filled with argon. The melt was brought to the desired temperature, and agitated for 1 to 2 hr. After allowing the salt and metal to separate, both phases were sampled. Filtered samples were obtained by immersing the end of the sampling tube in the liquid and increasing the argon pressure sufficiently to force the liquid salt or metal through the frit into the tantalum tube. The sample was then partially withdrawn into the cooler portion of the furnace tube and permitted to solidify before being removed. The temperature sequence for sampling at each magnesium concentration was 800°, 700°, 600°, 650°, and 750°C. Differences in the electrical conductivities of copper powder sintered under reducing, selectively oxidizing, and neutral atmospheres are related to impurities in solution or as precipitated oxides. The precipitation of impurities as oxides during sintering in nitrogen is proposed for maximizing the conductivity of sintered copper. Conductivity equations for two-phase systems are summarized. Selected equations are applied to porous sintered copper and composite structures. A recent review of the influence of impurities on the electrical conductivity of copper by Gregory et al.1 emphasized that an impurity in solid solution has a much more pronounced effect on reducing the electrical conductivity than when present partly or wholly as a second phase. When impurities in solid solution can be precipitated as oxides, the copper is purified with respect to these elements and the conductivity is increased. Cast and wrought copper, therefore, frequently contain an intentional residual oxygen concentration to oxidize and precipitate impurities less noble than copper. Copper powders generally also contain impurities which can contribute to a reduction in the electrical conductivity of the sintered material. The most deleterious impurities commonly found in commercial copper powders which markedly decrease the electrical conductivity when in solid solution but which can be precipitated as oxides include iron, tin, antimony, arsenic, cobalt, and nickel. In addition to impurities, porosity in sintered copper also contributes to a reduction in the electrical conductivity. The work reported herein discusses the influence of impurities, sintering atmospheres, and porosity on the electrical conductivity of sintered copper. These are important factors for controlling the electrical conductivity of materials such as sintered copper electrical contacts. Several publications on the electrical conductivity of sintered copper and composite materials with random pores or obstacles have incorrectly considered the conductivity to be proportional to the volume fraction of conducting material. However, analyses and equations have been proposed, the earliest of which is perhaps Lord Raleigh's of 1892,' which more accurately describe the conductivity of two-phase systems. These equations which in many cases allow one to closely estimate the electrical conductivity of porous sintered materials and two-phase composites will be reviewed and related to the measured electrical conductivity of sintered copper, copper-graphite. and Ag-W composites. INFLUENCE OF IMPURITIES AND OXIDIZING, REDUCING, AND NEUTRAL ATMOSPHERES Zone-Melted and Leveled Copper. The electrical conductivities of an electrolytic copper and a lower-purity compacting grade of copper powder after consecutive treatments in reducing or selectively oxidizing atmospheres are compared in Fig. 1. The powder and drillings from the electrolytic copper ingot were melted and solidified in a graphite crucible under hydrogen. The vertical zone leveling technique of multiple passes in opposite directions was used to obtain a uniform distribution of impurities. The electrical conductivity was measured on machined specimens 3 by 0.10 in. diam of the zone-leveled material and after the same specimens were consecutively treated as follows: 1) heating in hydrogen at 1600°F for 3 hr; 2) heating in air in a sealed tube so that 0.04 pct 0 was introduced; heating was started at 1000°F for 1 hr and continued at 1800°F for 8 hr; the stepwise diffusion treatment was used to avoid loss of copper due to evaporation of copper oxide at higher temperatures; and 3) final heating in hydrogen at 1600°F for 3 hr. A L&N Kelvin Bridge, type 4306, and a test fixture with knife edges 2 in. apart were used to measure the room-temperature conductivity with an estimated accuracy of ±0.5 pct. In all cases the conductivity of the electrolytic copper was approximately 100 pct of IACS. The conductivity of the impure copper was 80 pct of IACS both in the cast state and after heating in hydrogen. However, after the heating in air, the conductivity of the impure material was 100 pct IACS. After again heating in hydrogen, the electrical conductivity decreased to 60 pct of IACS. This decrease is attributed both to the dissolution of impurities and observed intergranular cracks due to the phenomenon of hydrogen embrittle-ment in copper. These data show that the electrical conductivity of commercial copper as represented by a compacting type powder can be increased significantly by the precipitation of impurities as oxides through heat treatment in an oxidizing atmosphere. Sintered Copper Powder. A commercial compacting type of copper powder pressed to various densities was sintered either in nitrogen, dissociated ammonia, or dissociated ammonia followed by a selectively oxidizing atmosphere of air in sealed Vycor tubes so that 0.06 pct O was added to the material. The electrical conductivity was measured perpendicular to the pressing direction on as-sintered specimens of approximately 3 by 0.25 by 0.15 in. John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York, 1950. $10.- A modern and practical introduction to the subject by the noted author of the Handbook of Mineral Dressing. The philosophy that a mill and all its parts comprise a single treatment process is a continuing theme in the book. Professor Taggart covers hand picking, screening, filtration, and electrical concentration. After introducing sedimentation, he takes up acceleration in free-settling, hindered-settling, sink-float, jigging, film and trough concentrators and shaking concentrators. A discussion of organic chemicals in flotation is followed by a detailed treatment of flotation. Final chapters deal with primary crushing, secondary crushing, grinding, transport, and controls and flowsheets.

Minerals - A Key to Soviet Power, by Demitri B. Shimkin. Harvard University Press. $8.00, 452 pp., 1953. -The book is an economic evaluation of the position of the Soviet Union in respect to mineral wealth and development. Various sources are drawn upon, including the reports issued after completion of the various five year plans. The book is of considerable reference value despite the confusion which beclouds information concerning Soviet mineral progress. The theoretical study is the joint product of some of the staff of the Harvard University Russian Research Center. The author's approach to metals and nonmetals in the Soviet Union is systematic and he presents a great deal of data covering the period 1926 to 1950. Indicated weaknesses in the mineral economy are highlighted. Some considerable space is given to Soviet mineral future.

Cast-iron, or pig-iron, is iron which contains all the carbon that it could absorb during its reduction in the blast-furnace. As is well-known to chemists, carbon exists in cast-iron in two distinct forms. In chemical union, as "combined" carbon, it cannot be discerned, except as it may increase the whiteness of the fracture, in so-called white iron, or carburetted iron (sp. gr. about 7.72). Carbon mechanically mixed with the iron as graphite is visible, varying in color from gray to black, while the fracture of the iron, according to the color and amount of graphite it contains, ranges from a light to a very dark gray. The specific gravity of graphitic iron is about 7.40. Silicon in cast-iron is evidently to some extent combined with the iron and the carbon ; but whether it exists also in a form corresponding with graphitic carbon, mechanically mixed with the remaining mass, is a question still in dispute, which we have not in this paper endeavored to answer. It has been the opinion of many writers on metallurgy, and many foundry men, that silicon is in every way injurious to cast-iron. Yet

SANTA Rita del Cobre Grant, as the present Chino property was known in the early part of the nineteenth century, was the scene of the first copper-mining operations of consequence in the territory now included in the United States. As early as 1801, the mines afforded the principal supply of copper for coinage by the Mexican Government. According to an estimate made from old records by H. A. Thorne, now superintendent of mines for the Chino company, about 41,000,- 000 lb. of copper had been produced prior to 1845, when the exploitation of the native copper deposits of the Lake Superior district was started for the first time by white men. B. S. Butler, in Mineral Resources of the United States for 1913, estimated the production from Grant County, New Mexico, from 1845 to 1913, at 134,353,963 1b.-an amazingly precise figure, considering the character of the data that he must have used. As "Grant County" may be interpreted for practical purposes as the Santa Rita district, it seems fair to credit the Chino group with a production of 165,000,000 lb. of copper prior to the time when the modern operations commenced. Unlike Morenci, which, by the way, lies only about 80 miles westerly across the Arizona-New Mexico line, Chino offers no problem as to when its production might properly be classified as coming from a Porphyry Copper. The time is definitely fixed by the starting of the new mill at Hurley in October, 1911. The interval from 1903 to 1913 had witnessed little production of any kind; and prior to that time operations had been confined entirely to the mining of narrow veins or lenses of ore assaying 10 to 15 per cent copper or even more. Damage to production wells subjected to the high temperatures associated with in-situ combustion projects has been a problem since the advent of this thermal recovery technique. Injection of water down the annulus of hot wells has been successfully utilized for cooling and prolonging the life of such wells. A mathematical model that is suitable for predicting the effectiveness of cooling water in a particular application is developed. Typical results for practical ranges of the various parameters involved are presented. INTRODUCTION In the normal course of in-situ combustion operations, highly damaging conditions develop in the production wells as the combustion zone approaches, and these wells are subjected to high temperatures (up to 1500F). The resulting well damage is recognized as one of the more serious operating problems unique to the in-situ combustion process. Even in operations where well completions have been specifically designed to cope with this problem, the question arises as to how this destructively high temperature can be kept within tolerable limits. A simple and economical approach to this problem is to circulate cooling water down-hole. This method has been used with some success in shallow reservoirs. At greater depths, however, the heat exchange with the overburden surrounding the well and between the fluids in the tubing and the annulus tends to equalize the temperatures of the two fluid streams so that the cooling capacity delivered to the bottom of the hole decreases with well depth. This method would provide no appreciable control over the bottom-hole temperature at great depths. In order to delimit the condition under which cooling by water circulation is effective, the wellbore temperature must be related to the water inlet rate and temperature; to the reservoir depth, production rate, and initial temperature; and to the combustion at at bot tom-hole depth. A model that meets these requirements and that will offer an approach for developing engineering solutions to practical design and operating problems is described in this paper. MATHEMATICAL MODEL Previous studies of temperature distributions include those for flowing wells1p2 and those for hot fluid injection. Adams and Haddenhorst 6 presented solutions for the down-hole circulation of hot oil in the treatment of paraffin-deposition problems. In this paper the thermal model presented by Ramey 4 is adapted to the flow system shown schematically in Fig. 1. The most important quality of an open-hearth refractory, therefore, is its rate of failure. This discussion of the physics and chemistry of the individual refractory materials will keep uppermost the question "Why, how, and where does it fail?" CAUSES OF FAILURE The principal causes of failure of open-hearth refractories are, in their order of importance : 1. Reaction with iron oxides. 2. Reaction with slag. 3. Flow and failure under load. 4. Melting. 5. Spalling. 6. Mechanical breakage. Reaction with Iron Oxides and Slag. Reaction with iron oxides and slag is by far the most important cause of failure. Liquid iron oxide comes near to being the "universal solvent" sought for by the alchemists. Among the materials commonly used in the open-hearth furnace, magnesia has the greatest resistance to this liquid and fireclay the least. The relations of iron and oxygen at high temperatures are illustrated in Fig 14-18. The liquid iron oxide that forms wherever iron is in contact with air or combustion gases cannot be given a definite formula. The percentage of oxygen at steelmaking temperatures may range from 21 to 28 (iron 79 to 72), depending upon the temperature and the oxygen pressure and also upon whether or not the liquid is in equilibrium with metallic iron. Because the ductility of the metal has been greatly reduced during the reaction, the entire phenomenon is usually called "embrittlement." Thus, after several years of operation caustic evaporators have been so badly embrittled that rivets could be cracked off with the blow of a hammer. Since fine intergranular cracks are almost always present in the zone of fracture, it has often been assumed that a process of selective corrosion in grain boundaries was responsible for the failure, although this has not been clearly proved experimentally. Concentrations of sodium hydroxide below those necessary for the uniform, rapid attack of the steel surface are reported to be most effective in producing embrittlement2, 3. In the operation of steam boilers a similar type of failure has been found, mainly in riveted seams or other capillary spaces where the solution may concentrate and where high stresses may also exist. It is believed that in such localized areas the dissolved solids may reach a value many times the few hundred parts per million prevalent in the body of the boiler. While this type of boiler failure has been the subject of investigation for a period of 20 years1, an understanding of its mechanism and a rational basis for complete protection have not yet been secured. Pore formation is examined analytically in cellu-larly solidified single crystals, in cylindrical castings of pure metals and alloys, and in unidirectionally solidified castings. Effects are considered of fluid flow. dissolved gas, and surface tension. Experimental results show that flow through a partially solid "mushy" aluminum alloy obeys relations similar to those applicable for flow through other types of porous beds. Flow rate is proportional to the square of the fraction liquid (fL) for fL less than 0.3. Results indicate models chosen for mathematical description of pore formation in alloy solidification are valid. ONE of the solidification variables which is influential in determining mechanical properties of castings and of wrought material produced from cast ingots is porosity. This porosity may result from shrinkage, dissolved gases, or a combination of both, and may take the form of either macroscopic pores in localized areas of the casting or microporosity evenly distributed throughout large areas of the casting. In alloys which freeze over a range of temperatures some microporosity is generally found after solidification. There has been much discussion as to whether the micropores are caused primarily by shrinkage, by gas, or by a combination of both.'-3 There has, however, been little experimental or analytical work performed to delineate the relative contributions of shrinkage and gas in causing microporosity or to quantitatively describe the influence of processing variables on microporosity. Porosity other than microporosity (e.g., center line shrinkage) has also received only limited quantitative treatment.495 The aim of this work is to examine analytically the general problem of pore formation in solidification and to perform limited confirmatory experiments. Consideration is first given to shrinkage porosity in pure and nearly pure metals (shrinkage in cellular growth, centerline shrinkage in cylinders). Next, a discussion is given of formation of shrinkage-caused microporosity in unidirectional solidification and in "mushy" solidification. Finally, influences of dissolved gas and surface tension on microporosity are examined. Numerical results are given for aluminum and an aluminum alloy. Typical examples of microporosity are shown in Figs. 1 to 3, for 1) cellularly solidified aluminum, 2) sand-cast aluminum alloy, and 3) low alloy steel. SHRINKAGE POROSITY IN PURE AND NEARLY PURE METALS 1) Cellular Growth. In cellular freezing of an impure liquid, liquid grooves may exist over a considerable length of the growing crystal.6 The cross-sectional area of the grooves decreases with increasing distance from the cell tips; the root of the groove is blunt if the liquid at this point reaches eutectic composition. As a result of volume contraction during solidification, flow occurs down the groove, parallel to the growth direction; hence, there must be a pressure drop from the groove entrance to points within the groove. The geometry of the groove is simplified to that of a circular cylinder of radius r and length L, Fig. 4, L » r, and a simple and useful limiting case is obtained. This is that, in the circular cylinder freezing at constant velocity, the pressure at the root of the groove is lower than that pressure at radius r in grooves of other geometries where r decreases continuously to a lower limit at L. THE importance of ground water control in glacial drift overlying mines is widely recognized. Adequate handling of the problem results in considerable saving in overall pumping costs, as the cost of pumping the larger quantity of water under low heads from surface wells is more than offset by the decrease in the quantity of water to be pumped from the mine under high heads. Eliminating or partly reducing seepage of water through the ledge reduces moisture content of the ore, a factor especially important in iron ore mines, where a reduction of 1 pct in moisture effects a very material saving. An important though indeterminate saving is also brought about by the elimination of water in the working places underground. The Homer and Wauseca mines of Hanna Coal & Iron Co. at Iron River, Mich., cover 480 acres. When these mines were started it was possible to operate on only one 40-acre tract, as the depth of water over the remainder of the property was too great to permit operation. Although the average depth of the ground water over the area being mined at that time was less than 50 ft it was necessary to pump 1200 gpm from the mine, the greater part from a depth of 750 ft. The slate footwall and graywacke hanging wall are almost impervious, and it was apparent that seepage into the mine was mainly through the iron formation in which the orebodies were located. Analysis of the water in the iron formation showed it to be of the same character as that in the glacial drift, while the water in both walls was heavily mineralized, also indicating that the water passed much more freely through the iron formation. The first attempt to take off the water above the ledge was by means of drainage drifts driven 15 to 20 ft below the ledge, Fig. 1. Various schemes were used to get the water into these drifts: 1—Holes 15 to 20 ft long were drilled from the back of the drifts to the ledge, but these were difficult to drill and blocked easily. 2—Sections of the drifts were blasted down. The term "longwall mining" is best known to coal men, although modifications of the method are continually being used in other fields. Longwall mining is of interest today because it makes for greater inechanization and better supervision at the working face, and therefore lower production costs and increased safety. It is an approach to the factory system of production, the high efficiency of which as compared to that in mines is well known. There is available an accumulation of experience regarding this work but coordination of experience is lacking and this series of experiments was undertaken to help serve this purpose. Model experiments were used for reasons of safety, cost and time, and because it has been previously shown1,2,3 that a scalar inodel built of the same material as the prototype will behave in a manner similar to that of the prototype, with time effects the same, if the effective weight of the model is increased in the same proportion as its linear dimenbions are decreased. This is accomplished by substituting a centrifugal for the gravitational field; i.e., placing the model in a centrifuge and controlling the strength of the centrifugal field by varying the rate of rotation. Many factors affect the behavior of the geologic material overlying a bed, therefore results and conclusions contained in this paper apply only to the conditions presented herein. The tensile behavior of bcc ordered P' AuZn single crystals (CsCl structure) has been investigated under varying conditions of temperature, composition, and orientation. Between -0.2 and 0.4 T, multi-stage hardening occurs fm stoichiometric and nonstoichio-metric crystals oriented near the middle of the primary stereographic triangle. At higher and lower temperatures, parabolic type hardening occurs, followed by work - softening at the higher temperatwes. Deviations from stoichiometry give rise to increased flow stresses. Multi-stage hardening was observed for most orientations, except along the [loll-[lll] boundary and near the [001] corner of the stereo -graphic triangle, where parabolic type hardening occurs. Along two slip systems, (hk0)[001] and (, operate simultaneously while in the [001] comer, slip occurs mainly on the system. Electron microscopy of deformed crystals revealed bundles of edge dislocations forming walls approximately Perpendicular to the glide plane. In general the plasticity of 4' AuZn closely resembles the plasticity of bcc crystals. In recent years, considerable interest has arisen concerning the mechanical properties of the CsCl type intermetallic compounds Ag Mg,'- Fe co,' and Ni Al.'-' The compound P'AuZn is structurally similar. It has a low and congruent melting point of 725"~,'" remains ordered up to the melting point,16 and pos-esses a range of solid solubility from 47.5 to 52.0 at. pct Au at room temperature.15 The present paper reports the results of an investigation on the general tensile behavior of material in single crystal form. Some dislocation configurations characteristic of the deformed state are also reported. The results of a detailed study of the slip geometry in AuZn are presented in a separate paper.17 PROCEDURE Alloy preparation, crystal growing techniques, and the procedure followed in selecting specimens of minimum composition variation are reported elsewhere.17 Dumb-bell shaped tensile specimens were prepared by carefully machining single crystals in a jewellers' lathe to a gage length of 0.80 in. and diam of 0.090 in. Back-reflection Laue X-ray patterns and room temperature tensile tests revealed that machining damage could be eliminated by electrochemically polishing 0.005 in. from the machined surface followed by annealing at 300°C for 1 hr. Specimens were polished in fresh 5 pct KCN solution (40°C, 12 v). Experiments were performed by gripping specimens in a self-aligning pin-chuck and threaded collet system, then straining in a floor model Instron tensile machine. All tests were performed in duplicate. Experimental variables included temperature, composition, and orientation. Unless otherwise stated the strain rate was 2.5 x 10"3 per sec. Liquid testing environments included nitrogen (WOK), nitrogen cooled petroleum ether (133" to 293"K), and silicone oil (293" to 488°K). Resolved shear stress-shear strain curves were electronically computed from autographically recorded load-elongation curves. Stress and strain were resolved on the macroscopic noncrystallographic (hkO) [001] system operative under the specific test conditions of temperature, strain rate, and orientation reported earlier.17 RESULTS The temperature dependence of the work-hardening curves is shown in Fig. 1 for gold-rich crystals of 51.0 at. pct Au oriented near the center of the stereo-graphic triangle. Over the range of intermediate temperatures from -200" to 400°K, they are very similar to those classically observed for fcc metals (reviewed by Nabarro et al.).'' The beginning of deformation is characterized by a region of decreasing hardening rate, stage 0, which is followed by a region of low linear hardening, stage I, and then a region of higher linear hardening, stage 11. At the higher temperatures, stage 111 is observed, a region of decreasing hardening rate. Over the intermediate temperature range, the extent of stage 0 and of the slow transition between stages I and I1 decreases with increasing temperature. Total ductility is large, often greater than 300 pct shear. As the temperature is either increased or decreased, the extent of stage I is decreased, giving rise to parabolic type flow and reduced ductility. Similar temperature effects have been reported for bcc ~r~stals.~~-~~ Below -14O°K, hardening is terminated in brittle fracture while above -400°K. initial hardening is followed first by work-softening and then by chisel-edge type ductile fracture.
