It's long been suspected that there has been an increase in the incidence of premature failure of rock bolts in underground coal mines over the past ten years. As far back as 2002 a study found a possible contributor to such premature failure in some Australian coal mines might be linked to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) (Crosky et al, 2002). That study suggested the low impact toughness could be a major influence on the susceptibility to SCC of different steel compositions. A subsequent study involving laboratory corrosion tests however failed to confirm any link with metallurgical factors (Villalba and Atrens, 2007), a finding that is at odds with field experience. Some mine sites today are still reporting prematurely failed rock bolts to the rock bolt manufacturers; the failures are being identified at SCC induced. To this end a research project has recently been commissioned at University of New South Wales (UNSW), which aims to identify the environmental factors causing SCC, through field test sites and simulating the conditions within an accelerated corrosion laboratory. This paper outlines the methodology that will be used in this study.

Grey River Gold Mining Limited (GRGML) has constructed and largely completed the commissioning of an alluvial gold dredge designed to recover gold from a low grade gold deposit in the Grey River Valley, New Zealand. The most important resource that GRGML has are the people who are employed by the organisation. The low grade of the deposit necessitates the requirement to operate the dredge at optimum efficiency, which in turn requires the work force to be of high calibre and continually motivated. The primary prerequisite for employment at GRGML is for employees to be receptive to new ideas and have the adaptability to develop new skills and apply those skills to the changing demands of the workplace.   A continually changing organisational structure is utilised to meet the needs of a changing work environment. The adoption of an innovative site employment agreement allowing for flexible working hours has aided the achievement of good employee productivity and attendance.   Employees gain a higher quality of life by working a roster pattern involving twelve hour shifts and a four day on, four day off pattern.   Employees and management are communicating very well and working together to achieve organisational goals which will ultimately benefit the employees, the shareholders, the local community and the mining industry generally.

In August 1996 a Microseismic Monitoring System developed by ISS International Limited was installed at the Pasminco Broken Hill Mine -Southern Cross area. The project aims were to:Assist in daily safety management in a mine environment which exhibits one of the highest occurrences of microseismic activity recorded in the Australian mining industry. Be used as a proactive tool in design of future development and stoping. The project to-date has been an unqualified success in achieving both goals. Consequently the system is being expanded from 6 to 14 monitoring sites.

The environmental impact of mining and evolving environmentallegislation has received increased attention worldwide in the last two decades (Bradfield, Shultz and Stone, 1996). The potential impacts associated with unstable spoil dumps from mine operations is the focus of concern both by the mining industry, environmental regulatory agencies and members of the public. Engineered slopes of mine spoils may be stable at the end of construction, but they can deteriorate over time. There is thus the need to increase the base of knowledge on the existing practices of spoil dump design and rehabilitation. Efficient engineering design and systematic economic evaluation of spoil dump reshaping techniques for mine rehabilitation assists in maintaining the expected standards of environmental compliance. As part of the overall approach for effective engineering design ofspoil dumps, a comprehensive, computational and efficient tool isrequired for assessing the economics and productivity of existing spoil dump reshaping practices for efficient mine rehabilitation. Such a design tool is useful in linking current spoil dump environmental management practices with engineering design planning and economic impact evaluation. This paper identifies the processes for the economic impact evaluation for existing spoil dump reshaping practices and proposed final site dump designs. Selection of an efficient spoil dump design at optimum costs will ensure operational efficiency. A case study is presented identifying economic impact evaluation in earthmoving equipment selection and the costs involved for the reshaping of spoil dumps to that of varying final site designs.

Times are changing for the mining industry. Civil society is demanding that miners pay more attention to the ways they impact on, and engage with, communities around their mines. Miners, in turn, are being forced to adapt and learn new social skills for which they were not originally trained. They are doing so in the middle of a broad resources boom, which is adding short-term operating challenges at the same time as miners need to be developing thoughtful solutions to longer term community issues. This paper examines a number of the issues that now loom on the horizon of mining companies. These include: human resources challenges and the crisis in minerals education; continuing community and social expectations of the resources industry and the impacts they will have, for example, on product stewardship, greenhouse gas emissions and the use of increasingly precious water resources; and current impediments to mineral exploration spending.It is concluded that the greatest challenge for the minerals industry is to develop a stronger cadre of local leaders and for the larger global miners to empower their local management to take on stronger public leadership responsibilities. There is a need for executive leadership to remember both the longer term and shorter term cyclical nature of the mining industry in developing solutions to community problems. Above all there is a compelling case for mining industry leaders to be more actively engaged with the wider community in the resolution of these issues.

Ernest Henry mine (EHM) is an Iron oxide copper-gold sublevel cave mine located 30 minutes north of Cloncurry in North-West Queensland. The underground mine lies beneath open pit excavations, which were in operation from 1999 to 2011. Fault structures carry large quantities of water from the cover sequence aquifer into the underground mine area. The open cut excavations exacerbates vulnerability of the underground mine to the high intensity wet season storms of northern Queensland. These factors combine to make hydrogeological issues high priority for mine operation. Water-related risks include the cost of removing water from the mine, flooding risk and mud rush potential.Turnover of key technical staff in late 2015 at EHM resulted in the mine being left in an untenable position of losing the primary source of technical knowledge. Due to encouragement of cross-disciplinary activity coupled with workload and resource sharing, the management team were confident in utilising on-site personnel to offset loss of experienced personnel.Remaining geology personnel took additional responsibility for hydrogeological monitoring equipment and planning of upcoming work. Consultant input was limited to review only and an emphasis was placed on knowledge transfer to the geology team. Using this strategy, a 13 hole dewatering program was successfully implemented, achieving a significant water level drop in areas of elevated hydrological risk, whilst also upgrading the hydrological monitoring sensor array.Through a development program centred on cross-disciplinary exposure, the technical team was able to retain key technical knowledge despite staff turnover and produce strong results outside traditional training and roles. Cooling of coal mines in the Bowen Basin, characterised by steep geothermal gradient, is presently achieved mostly through rental surface bulk air cooling in summer months. This paper argues that future mines will be required to focus their cooling resources more intensively to manage a challenging thermal environment where virgin coal temperatures of over 50¦C at a depth of 500 m are expected. Currently, mine cooling systems are employed to maintain the wet bulb temperatures (WBT) to below 27¦C at which point the risks of heat stroke or other heat-related issues are manageable. The capacities of these systems are in the range of 6 MWR to 10 MWR. The relationship between high working temperature environments and injury frequency rates is well established. Therefore, provision of appropriate cooling strategies and understanding their optimum performance and suitability are important to Australian coal mines of the future. This paper evaluates the underground temperature profiles of deep, gassy coal mines with propensity for spontaneous combustion and proposes the long-term cooling pathways to effectively manage thermal hazards. Thermodynamic modelling is performed on a longwall face and includes air leakage effects from goaf streams at various locations along the longwall face. The strategy summarises the application of underground bulk air cooling, chilled water sprays on the shearer and the resulting temperature profiles. Considering the new mining projects planned for the Bowen Basin region, a review of implementable cooling strategies such as mid-gate mobile bulk air coolers (BACs), spot coolers, underground bulk air cooling and the use of chilled water to enhance the positional efficiency of cooling plants, are discussed in this paper. In the last 30 years, human appropriation of global renewable resources has accelerated to the point where 35 per cent of the earthÆs land surface is now in managed agro-ecosystems, consumptive water use consumes between 50 per cent and 85 per cent of freshwater supply and 60 per cent of ecosystem services are utilised in an unsustainable manner. There are virtually no landscapes in which renewable resources are not already fully allocated among different economic and environmental uses. Furthermore, it is increasingly recognised that water availability issues do not exist in isolation but are linked with the related environmental issues of biodiversity preservation, the carbon cycle, soil degradation, and energy use and supply. It is against this background that the sustainable management of water in mining is increasingly developing a strategic viewpoint where water is viewed as a resource within an interconnected landscape, having economic, environmental and social value and providing a range of environmental services in the provision of public and private goods. This paper explores the issues associated with sustainable management of water in mining from a strategic viewpoint. The cumulative impacts of multiple water users, both within and outside the mining sector, is increasingly threatening the security of supply for all users. To quantitatively assess the ætrueÆ value of water it is necessary to: Better understand the science of ecosystem functioning and how human actions impact on environmental processes. Develop appropriate policy, finance and governance structures to support innovative programs that preserve ecosystem function and services (including market based instruments). Apply knowledge as interventions across landscapes in ways that maximise benefits and minimise unintended consequences taking into account differences in the value of water among sectors. A strategic viewpoint of water management relies on knowledge to guide decision making that has been acquired at a range of scales from mine site to mining region. This knowledge must be based on rigorous science, sound data and syntheses of different types of information. Strategic management of water resources will better position the industry in terms of understanding the risks posed by complex, interlinked environmental issues that are increasingly impacting on future access to land and renewable resources, including water, thereby ensuring miningÆs future social licence to operate.

The Department of Mineral Resources is the lead agency in mine site environment management and control inNew South Wales. The Department introduced a Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Plan (MREMP) process several years ago in order to integrate the activities of other government agencies who may have a material interest at the mine site. The MREMP process has resulted in a spirit of trust and co-operation between agencies and between agencies and mining companies. The spirit of co-operation has been reflected in greater public confidence that mining is environmentally responsible.

RISKGATE, an Australian Coal Association Research Program-funded (ACARP) initiative, has been designed to assist the Australian coal mining industry in improving minimum standards for safety performance, efficiency, operating practice and training. The online system is innovative in that it is built upon a foundation of industry expert knowledge gathered through action research workshops, which is further supported by a broad array of industry, academic and technical resources. In operation, RISKGATE offers a continuum for knowledge transfer and communication of current practice in risk identification, assessment and management in the coal mining industry. The primary mission of RISKGATE is to focus industry attention on prioritising control management as a way to achieve acceptable risk.A Coal Mine Tailings Dam Module has recently been added to the RISKGATE suite. The key risk, or initiating event, associated with coalmine tailings dams is catastrophic failure of the dam, leading to the release of tailings and water. This can occur due to geotechnical instability of the dam itself or of its foundation, overtopping and erosion of the dam, and piping failure of the dam itself or of its foundation. Coalmine tailings dams are also prone to seepage into the foundation and through the dam, particularly during operation when large volumes of water are discharged with the tailings. The most significant risk associated with seepage is the release of potentially contaminated water to the environment. Contamination can take the form of elevated salinity, acidity and dissolved metals. Run-off from coalmine tailings can cause erosion and can also potentially contain contaminants. Desiccation of the tailings surface can result in dust generation and dispersion.The paper presents the background and context of the RISKGATE project, the need for the addition of the RISKGATE Coal Mine Tailings Dam Module, and a description of the developed module, including the five initiating events considered, their causes and associated preventive controls, and their consequences and associated mitigating controls. The reverse cationic flotation using the starch as depressor of iron oxides is the most efficient upgrading process when is applied to the simple systems composed by hematite/magnetite and quartz. The fundamental studies performed with iron ore samples from different deposits over the world (Brazil, Russia, Mexico) confirmed the inefficiency of starch when the silica content in the concentrate is controlled by Fe/Mg-bearing minerals. The main approaches for solving these issues focused on using new collector formulations or new depressants. However, the alternative depressants tested inhibited flotation of quartz or were less efficient as iron oxide depressant. In this work, a comparison between new amidoamine collector with conventionally used etheramine and oleate collectors in the flotation of pure minerals and actual iron ore samples was performed. The electrophoretic mobility, contact angle and infrared spectroscopy measurements allowed to deduce the hindrance effect as main mechanism of selective adsorption of the amidoamine on the quartz surface compared to hematite and kaolinite. Molecular modelling studies revealed that this steric hindrance effect can be explained by the combination of the "shield" formed by the coordinating water molecules on the (001)-D2 hematite surface and the large volume of the amidoamine head group. The amidoamine tested as collector without use of a depressant showed excellent flotation selectivity allowing the total flotation of quartz from a mixture with hematite. High collector performance and selectivity were confirmed during reverse flotation of quartz using continuous flotation column (D = 500 mm; H = 4000 mm) and allowed to produce the iron concentrates with more than 60 per cent of iron from the rejected slimes samples of Vargem Grande 2 processing plant (Iron Quadrangle, MG, Brazil). The new collector allowed to develop flexible flotation flow sheets to process the iron ore with a complex gangue mineralogy and unlock the old altered tailings and slimes product as new resources

The involvement of concerned parties in all aspects of the Lihir Project from an early stage has promoted good relations between all groups. Activities involving landowners, the Lihir community, the New Ireland Provincial Government (NIPG) and the prospective developer include the Lihir Liaison Committee, Lihir Working Group, Environmental Planning Committee, Provincial Mining Task Force and the Lihir Mining Area Landowners Association (LMALA). With modifications, the Lihir Liaison model may be of use in promoting good relationships among parties in other mineral developments.

Background geochemistry of streams in mineralised terranes is affected by (a) natural sulphide oxidation and associated metallic discharges; and (b) previous mining history and associated discharges. Both of these processes elevate background metal concentrations by (i) directly adding dissolved metals to stream water; and (ii) adding sulphide-bearing sediments' to the stream system, to be trapped in old channels and bars for later chemical decomposition in situ or after flood reworking. Definition of downstream geochemical background, involving sediments and low-flow dissolved chemistry prior to mining is prudent, as this will provide a benchmark for any required estimation of new inputs from, for example, accidental tailings discharges. Two high-profile examples from western USA illustrate these points. Summitville mine in southern Colorado is an environmental disaster left when the operating company went bankrupt in 1991. Acid metal-rich discharges are leaving the site into a river system used for agricultural irrigation. However, nearby sub-catchments have substantial naturally occurring acid metal-rich discharges and locally discharge natural sulphide-rich debris flows into the same river. Distinction between natural and anthropogenic pollution in the downstream reaches is difficult. Early mining at Cooke City, Montana (New World District) released large volumes of sulphide-bearing tailings into the river system when a tailings impoundment dam failed. The event was equivalent to a 100-year flood, and tailings were deposited for 30 km downstream. These tailings are currently oxidising, and are being reworked into the modem stream during high flow events, thus perturbing background geochemistry.

During the latter part of 1937 consideration was given to the construction of a; local smelting plant for producing blister copper. Previously copper concentrates had been shipped to the United States of America. The proposition had the advantages of a saving in cost of realization, quicker financial return and reduced dependence on overseas shipping.The smelter was designed by the existing staff, who had difficulty in obtaining data on small plants, particularly on the reverberatory furnace. Construction was started in March, 1938, and the reverberatory was blown in on January 16th, 1939. One roaster had been operating for several weeks prior to this date.While results and operating technique on this new departure in small-scale smelting are barely beyond the experimental stage, it is felt that the experience gained to this time should be recorded to help fill the obvious gap in published information covering plants of this type.At present there are three copper smelters operating in Australia; the other two plants are equipped with blast furnaces.LOCATIONThe new smelter is situated in a position convenient to the concentrator and to the power plant. This is an integrated geology and plant improvement study arising from the heterogeneity seen in mineralogy and gold association at the Obuasi goldmine in Ghana. This heterogeneity comes from the two ore types mined, the one being a sulphide ore, mainly composed of gold-bearing arsenopyrites. This gold is refractory and exhibits a strong relationship between gold and As. The other is quartz veins, that are high grade and free milling. The installed circuit consists of comminution – Gravity -Flotation – BIOX – Leaching and Adsorption processes. The opportunity tested involved improved mass pull - related flotation recovery of Au in the Sulphide stream; while balancing the need for a minimum Sulphide grade for the Bio-oxidation process, occasioned by the removal of 25 to 30 % of the (quartz) stream through preconcentration by Ore sorting. The current circuit is then utilized for the sulphide route, while a smaller grind-gravity circuit is utilised for the quartz stream in a relatively inexpensive way, followed by a common leaching and adsorption circuit. Added advantages of the strategy includes faster recovery of gold from the quartz stream, with less consumption of reagents from saving on flotation and BIOX reagents for this stream. Screening and Ore sorting was successfully tested with laser technology, achieving over 98% separation of quarts (containing up to 40% of the gold). The plant schedule of Ore, the suggested circuit design for the Ore sorting, the results obtained from the different flotation regimes, as well as consequent financial modelling have been presented and discussed in this paper. This illustrates the opportunity that arises out of a detailed analysis of material versus installed circuits, even if the gains in pre-concentration do not necessarily involve rejection of gangue material. An added opportunity for future investigation, briefly discussed but not tested in this paper, would be to maintain current mass pulls but with increase in throughput (by the space created by the sorted material). This will of course require the mining ability. It could also add LOM value by altering the cut-off grade.

The stabilities of rehabilitated landforms are often threatened by the altered surface hydrology, especially the excessive surface run-off, which may cause severe water erosion and associated pollutant transport to surrounding areas. These effects would lead to pollution in waterways and render the failure of newly established vegetation. An accurate quantitative evaluation of run-off problems are consequently essential for the proper rehabilitation designs which can help minimise these harmful consequences. For this purpose, in this study a novel run-off model, RunCA, was developed based on Cellular Automata (CA), integrating fundamental hydraulic principles. In this model, a series of rectangular cells were employed to cover the study area. Run-off production within each cell was simulated by determining the cell state (water surface elevation) that consists of both cell altitude and water depth. The distribution of water flow among cells was determined by applying CA transition rules based on the improved minimisation-of-difference algorithm and the calculated flow travelling time. RunCA was applied to various aspects in mined land rehabilitation planning, including landform designs for both hill-slopes and tailings dams, revegetation strategies and cover constructions. Simulation results showed that surface run-off increased with slope gradient and more run-off was produced on convex and straight slopes than on concave and S-shape slopes. Both mounds and rip lines constructed on the tailings dam surface could help reduce the water discharge. Vegetation planted in rows were more effective than those in columns or patches in controlling run-off. Increased cover thickness had the potential in reducing run-off rates, and the covers with an increasing thickness from top to bottom of the slope tended to be more efficient than those with a constant thickness. All these results have demonstrated the efficacy of RunCA as a simulation tool in assessing the hydrologic behaviours of different rehabilitation designs. Compared to the traditional hydrologic models, most of which were developed for the catchment scale studies, RunCA has the potential advantages in capturing the dynamic and spatially varied run-off behaviours at different spatial and temporal scales.CITATION:Shao, Q,?Baumgartl, T, Huang, L and Weatherley, D, 2014. Consolidated Rutile Limited (CRL) was one of the best performing mining stocks of the turbulent 1980s, having a very high payout of franked dividends. In contrast to some other mining groups, it was not highly involved in the speculative lead-up to the 1987 sharemarket crash. Its base was firmly laid through a succession of decisions that were taken in the period 1982-1985. These decisions and the rationale behind them are outlined in this paper. CRL began the 1980s in a highly favourable position. It had successfully pioneered the transition to high-throughput mining of the high dunes on North Stradbroke Island (NSI), commissioning its 2100 tph cutter suction dredge at the Bayside reserves in 1978 at the time of rising prices, such that it was able to pay off its modest bank loan within 18 months. The June 1980 results showed a record after-tax profit of $5.6M, from total assets fo $26.5M and sales tonnages of rutile and zircon of around 50,000 tonnes each.

The Tonkolili banded iron formations (BIF), Sierra Leone, host extensive iron ore deposits which are of economic signifi cance to the seaborne iron ore trade. The deposits are dominated by a strategic JORC compliant mineral resource of 11.6 Bt grading 30.1 per cent Fe comprised of primary magnetite mineralisation in the form of a fresh metamorphosed BIF featuring a uniform mineral assemblage of quartz-magnetite ± ferro-silicate minerals. Pilot plant metallurgical test work has demonstrated that the production of a magnetite concentrate is achievable using the established beneficiation techniques of magnetic separation and flotation. The concentrates arehigh-grade, and suitable for blast furnace or direct reduced iron pellet feed. The major challenge facing the development of such magnetite deposits at industry competitive production rates is the significant capital investment required for process plant and associated infrastructure.Two well-developed weathering zones exist within the deposits, and are associated with the progressive development of a tropical weathering profile overprinting the primary BIF. These zones feature a near surface hard indurated duricrust up to 60 m thick, and a soft progressively developed saprolite between duricrust and fresh BIF. These zones have been found to be amenable to producing iron ore products including DSO lump and sinter fines from the duricrust, and concentrate from the saprolite. Mineral resources sufficient to support commercial production of such iron ore products were defined by an intensive exploration program in 2010.African Minerals Limited has developed a three phase production strategy to progressively self fund the development of the Tonkolili strategic magnetite project by:• commencing a Phase I 12 Mt/a DSO operation in Quarter 4 2011,• increasing production in Phase II to 35 Mt/a with the commissioning of a saprolite beneficitation plant and associated infrastructure upgrades, and• developing a 45 Mt/a Phase III operation producing high-grade magnetite concentrate.The comparatively low capital and operating costs of a duricrust DSO lump and sinter fines operation coupled with its proximity to ground surface make it highly attractive for the generation of early cash flow for the Tonkolili project. Revenue from this early production may be used to selffund the subsequent development of phases requiring progressively more significant beneficiation plant and infrastructure.

With the expansion of magnetite projects in Australia has come the opportunity to take advantage of newer technologies that were not necessarily available when the magnetite industries of North America and Europe were maturing. One of these technologies is the IsaMill, originally developed for the economic treatment of ultra-fine grind (UFG) duties of Mount Isa Mines. As understanding of the IsaMill has increased, so too has the ability to process coarser feeds while maintaining the same energy efficiency advantage and tight product size distribution that originally made the IsaMill so attractive. In the case of magnetite the hard non-elastic ceramic grinding media is ideally suited to the grinding duty when compared to steel grinding media. The centripetal separator and naturally steep product size distribution curve provide a mill discharge that maximises the critical concentrate grade. This paper analyses the effect of the IsaMill grinding technology on the full-scale Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) magnetite operation along with pilot and lab scale demonstrations of optimisation. Issues encountered and the solutions to maximise the mill throughput and quality are examined in an effort to promote better understanding across the industry. Recovery of Fine Gold Particles from Philippine Gold Deposits by Enhanced Gravity Concentration and Flotation The objective of the study is to determine the applicability of enhanced gravity concentration (EGC) and flotation for gold recovery. While gravity concentration methods have long been applied to gold ores, especially to free-milling types that requires minimal beneficiation, flotation for gold recovery has not yet taken hold as a major operation in the Philippine setting. In this study, the application of EGC and flotation for gold is applied and compared to the existing methods for gold recovery. Two samples, with assays of 7.315 and 5.333 g Au/MT (samples 1 and 2, respectively) are used for this study. These samples are subjected to mineralogical studies and is found to have a gold-particle size ranging 10 to 200 microns. To verify the separation size, the mesh-of-grind (MOG) is used as the primary parameter for experimentation. Initially, the samples are stage-crushed, ground, and subjected to EGC using a Falcon SB40 Concentrator. Based on the results, the two samples showed that recovery increases with a finer MOG. The ratio of concentration (K) decreases with a finer MOG. This shows that there should be sufficient liberation of the gold values for EGC to be effective. The effect of the enhancement is to pronounce the difference in specific gravity of the minerals, promoting better separation. This is validated by the high recovery values of 86.97 per cent and 98.73 per cent exhibited respectively for samples 1 and 2 (at 54 microns). For the flotation runs, sample 2 with an average particle size of 80 per cent passing 74 microns is examined using thiocarbamate-based collectors for roughing and subsequently exhibited a recovery of 96.32 per cent. At this point, the concentration ratio (K) is noted as an important efficiency indicator for flotation process since it yielded a very low-mass and high-metal content concentrate.
