The principal objective of Geotechnical Engineers supporting operating mines is to provide safe working conditions and ensure that pit designs are geotechnically optimised to site conditions and pre-defined stability requirements. Pit slope designs are delivered in advance of pit excavations. Making changes to these designs is usually slow to enact and involves a layered sign-off before implementation, leading to unwanted delays in their adoption and subsequently increased production pressures. When unexpected ground conditions are encountered during the mining process, or short-term mining schedule requirements demand it, changes to these designs may not be easily feasible in certain situations. It is when these scenarios arise that Geotechnical Engineers need to be proactive and consider unconventional options to deliver safe operating conditions while satisfying short-term requirements to the mine schedule. Essentially, the geotechnical short-term strategic designs double-pronged approach supports the mine schedule while providing safe conditions and minimising geotechnical risks for people and equipment. Common short-term strategic geotechnical designs include; slope buttressing, over-steepening cut slopes to increase reserve recovery through unplanned or emergency cutbacks, and accepting risk threat and operating under unstable slopes. When implementing strategic design options, the Geotechnical Engineer must consider the broader implications for such designs. They must think of the plan’s long-term effects on the mine schedule and pit wall stability. Initiating aggressive designs to recover additional reserves to satisfy a short-term scheduling demand could result in-pit wall instability or suboptimal pit layout. Before and during the implementation phase, the Geotechnical Engineer must communicate and engage with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the plan is executed accordingly and geotechnical risks are effectively managed. Proactiveness to ground response and implementation of risk management strategies will improve safety performance and optimise mining schedules.

The outlook for suppliers of energy to the expanding economies of the Pacific Basin region is essentially positive, but particularly for exporters of high quality steam coal. This paper argues that economic growth in the Pacific Basin region has exceeded world economic growth for some years and that this will continue to be the case for the next decade at least. It looks briefly at the link between economic growth and energy demand and at the relationship between energy demand and the demand for electricity.Changing preferences in fuel mix for electrical generation in the region are noted and tentative forecasts made about variations in this mix. The pros and cons of various forms of fuel used to generate electricity are considered from the point of view of the consumer.

The main aim of the conference is to work towards improved useage of steelplant slags which have largely been considered waste mater- ials, This paper summarised investigations carried out on the suitability of air cooled blast furnace slag, blast furnace granulated slag and basic oxygen steelmaking slag as road base materials. All slag samples were obtained from the PortòKembla Works of Australian-Iron and Steel Pty Ltd. Since road making materials are increas- ingly being characterised by use of resilient moduli, the compressive strengths and resilient moduli were determined for road base of the following slags. 1 Air cooled crushed blast furnace slag 2 mixes of air cooled blast furnace slag, granulated slag, and lime 3 mixes of air cooled blast furnace slag,-granulated slag and basic oxygen steelmaking slag. Evaluation of a local dacite (dense medium grained igneous rock, classification rhyolite), generally considered an excellent road base course material, was carried out for use as a reference material.

Construction and commissioning of the Nova Copper-Nickel project of Independence Group was completed in late 2016. The plant is in the Fraser Range of Western Australia, about 120km east of Norseman and produces separate Copper and Nickel concentrates. Since the early feasibility phases of the project, the importance of automation and control was recognised and planned for to ensure the plant performance meets the design expectations. The site is well equipped with common as well as advanced instrumentation. It currently boasts the largest number of Blue Cube MQi (mineral quantifier inline) slurry grade analysers on a single plant worldwide. It was also decided that 25 Blue Cube TempoTracks would be installed on the flotation cells. The TempoTracks provide information on froth height and velocity, hence giving continuous, quantitative measurements of the froth that is pulled off each cell, rather than relying on infrequent, subjective visual inspections.The Nova concentrator consists of a differential flotation circuit whereby copper bearing mineral are selectively floated prior to nickel flotation. It is imperative that losses of copper to the nickel circuit, and vice versa, are minimised. The plant metallurgical team and Process IQ collaborated to develop and implement the advanced control strategy for the plant. This paper focusses on the optimisation of the copper concentrate that is pulled off the copper rougher and scavengers. This strategy was made possible by the additional measurements listed above. The control optimisation of the copper rougher and copper rougher scavenger circuit was implemented during August 2017 on the StarCSTM advanced control platform. It continuously optimises the level and air setpoints. The control philosophy incorporates several notable techniques which include: a variable mass pull target that is a function of the quantity and grade of material entering the circuit, integrated compensation to prevent inventory build-up in cells, balancing of the froth velocity over the lip of each cell to adaptive, modular system usage and advanced error handling. Constructing upstream raises with tailings is an accepted and cost-effective practice in Western Australia, where the climatic conditions are favourable, desiccation (and hence overconsolidation) occurs rapidly due to air drying and there is a perceived low seismic risk. This is in contrast to many other settings, where there is either a positive water balance, high seismicity or a combination of both. In recent times, there has been an increased focus on seismicity in areas of Australia that have historically been considered to be of low seismic risk. The increased focus is driven by two recently published documents used by tailings practitioners and increased awareness from corporate entities, particularly those with mines in high-seismicity regions such as South-East Asia and South America (particularly Chile).The increased awareness has resulted in increased rigour being applied to seismic design of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) in general, and particularly upstream-raised TSFs. This paper compares the results of a seismic stability assessment for an upstream-raised TSF located in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, which has historically been considered a low seismic area, with a seismic stability assessment carried out for a crossvalley TSF containing similar tailings but located in a high-rainfall, high-seismic setting in South-East Asia. The influence of the adopted design earthquake values on the results of the assessments and the potential impact of the maximum design earthquake (MDE) on the design approach is presented for both cases. The results indicate that although the Western Australian site is located in an area thought to have low seismic risk, the screening level analyses suggest that the MDE could result in liquefaction of the tailings materials. Not surprisingly, liquefaction was also indicated for the South-East Asian site. The outcomes of the assessment are also presented.CITATION:Chapman, P J and Williams, D A, 2015. Significant coal reserves in New South Wales lie underneath major bodies of natural and stored surface waters. In order that mining can occur safely and without any adverse effect on the surface, various statutory provisions and administrative guidelines have been framed for regulating the surface and sub-surface strata disturbance. There are particular bases for the existing guidelines and the assumptions which were made in their choice. Evaluation of the guidelines in the light of the knowledge gained during the last ten years indicates that they are conservative in some cases and can be made less restrictive without lowering the safety standards. The suggested changes include reduced width for pillars in both bord and pillar first workings and panel and pillar workings, and increased level of extraction for a given degree of subsidence. Changes, if implemented, would lead to increased coal recovery.

The history of the Ph-Cu-Zn mineralisation in the orthampton Block of Western Australia has been further investigated. It was hoped that (1) Rh-Sr studies on partially-remelled granulites, wall-rocks to the dolerite dykes, should date the dolerite intrusion, (2) Rh-Sr data on hydrothermally-altered dolerite should date the sulphide mineralisation, (3) Pb model ages on the galenas might provide an independent dating of the mineralisation, in addition to any geochemical information that might be derived. Only the second dating aim was fulfilled, but the Pb isotope data, when combined with the Rh-Sr data, have permitted deductions about U, Th and Pb abundance changes during the regional metamorphism, and about a possible source of the ore Pb. In detail the following has been found. (1) The partially-remelted granulitic wall rocks yield a scattered whole-rock Rh-Sr isochron which seems not to have been reset by the dyke intrusion (age 1037 ± 146 Ma, with initial Sr ratio 0.7171 ± 0·0054, MSWD = 111). This date agrees well with that reported previously for granulites from another locality; together theyestablish the time the metamorphic period closed. (2) The hydrothermally-altered dolerites yield a Rh-Sr whole-rock date 434 ± 16 Ma, with initial Sr ratio 0.7072 ± 0·0029 and MSWD = 31, taken as referring to the time of Ph-Zn mineralisation. This contrasts with a report of much older palaeomagnetic and K-Ar datings of the dolerite (not less than 550 Ma, possibly older) and suggests that neither the dolerites nor their heat have had any connection with the mobilisation of the Pbscavenging solutions. (3) The Pb isotope ratios of galenas from the ores yield a well-correlated regression which is not amenable to any of the model-age calculations. (4) The Pb-isotopic trends negate any genetic connection between dolerite and mineralisation, but the country-rock granulites could be the Pb source. (5) Combination of the Rh-Sr dates and the Pb data in a "simultaneous isochrons" construct permits the inference of major losses from the system during the regional metamorphism, in the order U>Pb>Th, with substantial homogenisation of the remaining Pb. This left a wide range in local UlPb and Th/U among the source rocks which eventually were scavenged by the mineralising solutions. (6) These geochemical deductions are shown to be compatible with previously-published information on the abundance ofU and Th in the Northampton Block granulites, which are thus seen to be credible as source rocks for the ore lead.

The requirement for secondary egress from underground workings has long been regulated in Australia. Escape way systems have evolved from simple airleg rising ladders and timber ladders to steel galvanised ladders and more recently fully enclosed polyethylene ladders.The polyethylene ladder, Safescape Laddertube, was introduced to the underground mining industry in 2010. It is an enclosed cylindrical modular plastic ladder designed for use in underground escape ways and access ways. Since its first installation in May 2010, the Laddertube has been installed in 43 mines across four countries, totalling 8800 m of ladders installed to December 2013.The Cracow Gold mine is one operation using Laddertube, located 500 km north-west of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Upon discovering and developing both the Empire and Roses Pride orebodies, a safe and economically viable secondary egress system and surface primary ventilation exhaust shafts were necessary to support development and production activities to these workings. The need arose to merge these two critical requirements together between surface and underground mine workings some 200 m and 400 m respectively for each orebody. Neither egress has intermediate access points within their full service length from top to bottom. Several options were considered, the preferable and most feasible method adopted was Laddertube.The longest egress length requiring Laddertube within the two vertical surface exhaust shafts was 400 m long, within a 3.5 m diameter shaft. Due to the length of the vertical Laddertube system in both egresses, personnel are to be assisted by mechanical means using the Extended Ladder Climb Assist system.The Gossan Hill mine also uses Laddertube for their escape ways. Part of the Golden Grove operation, Gossan Hill is an underground sublevel open stoping mine located in the mid-west of Western Australia.With a considerable mine life remaining and a history of acidic water and stress related deterioration in vertical openings, the mine operators sought an escape way solution that would provide for the long-term needs of Gossan Hill. Laddertube was selected due to its non-corrosive properties and the ability to fill in around the ladder way to provide stability to the raise opening.Laddertube is a recent development in escape way systems, and is effectively being applied in a variety of operations, meeting the specific needs of underground mines.CITATION:Durkin, S, Hawkins, B and Lawrence, V, 2014. The Selwyn Gold-Copper Mine is located 150 km southeast of Mount Isa within Proterozoic units of the Mount Isa inlier (Figure 1). Mineralization in the mine area is associated with strongly sheared ironstones and iron rich schists at the base of the mid- Proterozoic Staveley Formation. The ironstone horizons outcrop as a series of dominant ridges over a 10 km strike. Economic gold-copper mineralization has been defined in 4 separate zones within a 3.5 km length of the outcropping ridges. A current combined geological resource for the deposits is 5.3 million tonnes of 5.0 g/t Au and 2.02 Cu. Weathering of the deposits has resulted in a pronounced vertical zonation of mineralogy, especially copper, within the ore zones. This has produced 3 separate ore types which require different treatment techniques. The categorization is based on copper content and zones are termed leached (surface), oxide and sulfide. Ore removed from the pits will be mainly leached and oxidized with minor sulfide near the pits final depths, while the underground ore will be from the sulfide zone with minor oxide in some areas.

A forecast of mining conditions in Upper Silesia collieries for the beginning of the 21st century has special focus on average depth of mining, energy of seismic tremors induced by mining and energy of dynamic loads on roadway supports. A method of dynamic loads calculation is based on volume of failed rock surrounding an opening and the seismic energy of tremors anticipated. New types of yielding steel arch supports have been designed to resist massive static and dynamic loads and a system of supports has been tested both on 1 : 10 scale models and in natural size. The support sections used are 29, 36 and 44 kg/m.

The potential for bulk diversion was identified and quickly implemented following the development of bulk sensing technologies applied to conveyed flows. In the early 1980s real time analysis of ash in coal was intended to improve the understanding and control of quality variability. By the end of the 1980s approximately 5% of coal analysers installed were being utilised for bulk sorting; diverting flows to create stockpiles to improve blending flexibility and boiler feed consistency, diverting waste material, or bypassing the beneficiation process when the coal met product quality criteria. In the 1990s bulk sensing and sorting utilising natural gamma detection was applied to conveyed waste in gold-uranium mineralisation and allowed ore to be recovered and processed that would otherwise have been discarded. Further applications developed in the iron ore sector where product quality ore could be diverted to bypass beneficiation and save significant unnecessary processing costs and improve recovery by avoiding process inefficiency losses. Plant capacity was freed up to be utilised by material that required processing. Similar benefits became evident in the phosphate industry and in base metals where multi-elemental analysis using Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis provides ideal opportunities to representatively measure 30 second conveyed increments at high accuracies. This has been successfully adopted in copper, nickel, platinum and lead-zinc to improve waste removal after primary crushing to eliminate unnecessary expense and improve plant efficiency. The benefits include increased output from existing operating capacity, significant reductions in consumable costs and generation of fewer detrimental waste streams. The paper outlines the technologies and discusses case studies covering the above commodities, demonstrating the immense value that representative real time measurement of conveyed flows can create. Measurement data concurrently provides multiple benefits in operational performance besides sorting, through ore reconciliation, ore blending, feedforward control and metal accounting, adding further value.

PT FreeportÆs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) Mine is the latest block cave mine within the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS).Issues with undercutting and stress concentrations at the extraction level were experienced, leading to reduced pillar strength.The extraction level-related issues became more pronounced, leading to local panel drift collapse, in an area that was over 100 per cent extraction. A review of ground conditions, panel collapse descriptions, and factors contributing to panel collapse are presented in this paper.

Hydrothermal mineral deposits are the dominant mineral deposit type in the Cullen Mineral Field, and have been important sources of tin, tungsten gold, silver-lead, zinc and copper. The deposits are mostly in north to northwest-trend- ing shear zones, and are confined to Early Proterozoic contact metamorphosed metasediments or synorogenic to postorogenic granitoids. The distribution of the vein-type deposits with- in the contact aureole defines a district-scale metal zonation of uranium closest to granitoid, through tungsten, copper, tin, silver-lead to gold with increasing distance from granitoid contacts. This zonation probably reflects de- creasing temperatures within the contact aureole during granitoid emplacement, and at the time of generation of a variety of metal-bearing fluids. A magmatic source for some of the metals is indicated by the positive spatial relationship between uranium, tungsten, copper and silver-lead deposits and granitoids abundant in those metals. There is little evidence for any such relation- ship for tin and gold deposits, except for an association of some tin deposits with tin-enriched mafic rocks. Most of the granitoids with anomalous metal values are late stage highly fractionated leuco- granitic phases forming younger plutons peripheral to the main body of the Cullen Batholith, They probably form cusps connected to the main body at shallow depths.

Since iron oxide and silicon oxide are major gangue components in various types of ore, FeO-SiO2 base slag, ie fayalite slag, has been often encountered in pyrometallurgical processes of non-ferrous metals. During most matte production processes such as the smelting of Cu, Pb, and Ni, the FeOSiO2 based slag is inevitably formed and plays an important role in refining crude metal as well as engineering aspects. Recently, similar pyrometallurgical approaches have been attempted in the recovery of valuable metals (Ni, Co, Cr) from wasted secondary batteries. Thus, the viscosity of the FeO-SiO2 based slag has great significance in properly controlling smelting processes. However, when molten metal or matte does not coexist with the slag during the measurement, there has been a serious difficulty in maintaining Fe valance and consequently, the slag composition. In the present research, the viscosity of molten FeO-SiO2 slag was measured in 1573~1673 K using a rotational viscometer. In order to keep the state of iron oxides, the oxygen partial pressure was controlled using CO/CO2 gas mixture. The optimised ratio of CO/CO2 could be calculated using Fe/Fe2+ and Fe2+/Fe3+ equilibria at each temperature. The composition of the slag, particularly Fe valance, after the measurement was analysed with the aid of an inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and an automatic potentiometric titrator. The measurement showed that the FeO-SiO2 slag has considerably low viscosity values in the molten state, and it sharply increases as the temperature decreases. In spite of the careful oxygen partial pressure control, a part of Fe2+ was found to be oxidised to Fe3+, with a maximal case reaching about 20 per cent. The increase in viscosity of FeO-SiO2 at low temperatures can be attributed to the composition change due to an unavoidable Fe2+ oxidation. In addition, the relationship between the change in the viscosity and the liquidus temperature of FeO-SiO2 based slag was discussed to understand the composition dependence of viscosity.

There is currently a world wide interest in coal-oil technology as the search continues for alternative energy sources to reduce the consumption of petroleum crude. An important aspect of this coal-oil technology study is to obtain information on the flow properties of coal-oil slurries. While some work has been reported on the flow behaviour of black coal-oil suspensions, very little work on brown coal-oil suspensions has been reported. In this paper flow charac- teristics of brown coal-oil suspensions for various coal concentration and temperatures have been presented. A Capillary rheometer, designed to handle settling suspension, has been used for deter- mining rheological properties. Brown coal of 0 0725 mm average particle diameter has been used in this work. The oil was a coal derived product having a boiling point range of 234¦- 319¦C, Apparent viscosity of all suspensions was found to increase on storage due to ageing. Ageing might have occurred due to physico- chemical interactions between coal and oil. Flow behaviour of some suspensions changed from Newtonian to non-Newtonian on storage.

Currently, there are several open pit mines with production rates of about 200 000 tpd of ore that are reaching the end of their economic lives. In most cases, the remaining orebody extends to depths greater than 300 m below the pit limit, leaving hundreds of millions of tons of reserves that can only be recovered by means of an underground mining method. One such method used for mass production is block caving. This paper presents a ventilation system for a four-zone block cave mine operation developed on a footprint 1000 m wide and 1200 m long. The system is designed for a mine with a nominal production rate of 120 000 tpd of ore using diesel powered units on the production and reduction levels. It discusses the air quantity requirements for the worst case scenario, which is anticipated to occur five years after the mine has reached its full production capacity. Finally, it summarises the results of computer modelling exercises that were carried out to determine an economic ventilation infrastructure that includes shafts, drifts, main fans, and ventilation control devices.

"Mining companies routinely invest in improvements to their processing operations, but often these enhancements do not work to full effect.Improvements can be ineffectual because underlying process problems are not identified or prioritised for correction or repair.This is frequently because ‘black box’ solutions deployed to implement process control improvements typically rely on instrumentation to provide data for algorithms to work effectively, and these solutions are often ineffective or disabled at mineral processing sites.There are three key reasons they can fail to deliver: vital instrumentation is not calibrated or functioning as required basic process control and loop tuning was not implemented correctly or is in need of tuning there is an inability to support the ‘black box’ solutions on-site.Many of these problems can be overcome by implementing operational analytics that identify where problems are occurring and prioritise where improvements need to be made.Incorporating operational analytics into process improvement is not a new methodology. It is more a back-to-basics approach to make more efficient use of capital and systems already deployed.Data collection systems, such as the OSIsoft PI System, provide real-time and historical process information for process control experts to analyse and identify areas for improvement. However, most systems are not used effectively. With some simple enabling, data collection systems can provide evidence for prioritising investments in improvements and determining an investment’s effectiveness.MIPAC advocates that the initial step, with analytical evidence, is that clients review the control strategies and implement small influential instrument repairs/calibrations and operator training. With the burgeoning opportunities for new gold mines to be developed the opportunity now exists for a reassessment of the optimal processing path for these gold ores. Projects have traditionally followed the path of whole ore cyanidation with either Carbon In Pulp (CIP), Carbon In Leach (CIL) or Merrill Crowe. The challenge ahead is whether these traditional processing methods are the best option for stakeholders, or to go beyond CIP and use a combination of currently available technologies that can be used to provide gold recovery at a significantly reduced capital cost and minimal deleterious impact on the environment. Either stand alone or combinations of gravity concentration and flotation, can produce a gold bearing concentrate that can then be fed directly to a batch or continuous intensive cyanidation unit. Treatment of a gravity/flotation concentrate by intensive cyanidation may be processed by the InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) developed by Gekko Systems of Australia. The advantages of the technology combining gravity/flotation followed by intensive cyanidation are significantly reduced capital costs; improved safety due to reduced cyanide inventories; the majority of tailings un-contaminated by cyanide; less energy required due to an opportunity for an increase in grind size û reducing green house gas emissions; detoxification of concentrate tailings can minimise tailings disposal and containment requirements.

A prototype version of a computer controll- ed on-line scanning electron microscope image analyser, employing the real-time signals ob tamed by digital control of the electron beam has been used to obtain statistical quantificat lion of a wide range of mineral grain character istics, including composition, size distribut- ion, and degree of liberation. These propert lies have been determined for suites of whole particles of flotation concentrates, mounted without further preparation. The facility is also well adapted to the measurement of general Istereological parameters. The computer control software is based on an operating system which includes the device drivers and which is linked to FORTRAN programs [containing the procedural algorithms. Historically the insurance industryÆs involvement in any project has been relatively late in the process. Often it was a case of the last item to be ticked off the checklist has been to ensure that the insurance is in place. However, in more recent times insurers have imposed more restrictions on the cover they are prepared to provide, which has in some cases necessitated a change in the contracting structure to accommodate the insurance policy(ies). In addition, changing contractual practices have changed the allocation of risk between the various parties involved. This calls for a more proactive approach to the design and implementation of an insurance program for both the construction and operational phases of any resource project. This paper explores how a risk managed approach to the design and implementation of an insurance program for a resource project can align itself with current management approaches to project development. From the authorsÆ experience, this approach is best adopted early on in the project (often in conjunction with the bankable feasibility study) and follows AZ/NZS4360 to objectively examine and compare a wide range of risk exposures of the project in a time-effective manner across the following areas: personnel; environment; general management; compliance û legislation, systems, protocols; asset management; change management; financial impacts to the organisation; products/services; service delivery; and technology. Having identified and then analysed the risk exposures according to common consequence and likelihood ratings the next step is to develop a risk map of all considered exposures. The true value of this approach lies in the development and implementation of a risk treatment plan for identified exposures where the exposure is unacceptable. The plans will lead to the optimal solution to the appropriate risk prevention, risk mitigation and risk transfer options available. This paper also examines other benefits to the project that may arise from adopting a risk managed approach in addition to the ability to design an insurance program which recognises the exposures and the ability of the organisation (and other project parties) to retain risk.
