The underground mining of a narrow vein hard rock orebody is a capital and labour intensive method of extraction. Due to the nature of underground mining it is difficult for higher level managers to physically see the efficiencies and inefficiencies of a particular method. Extraction methods and sequencing often need to be altered from the original planned methods as a result of mine developent, providing more in depth information as it progresses. As a result of these issues contract mining of these orebodies is common practice. There are several types of contract structures for the purpose of underground contract mining with many complex permutations of them that reflect the different needs of each individual company and orebody. The different contracts are arranged dependent on the mining companyÆs desire to transfer or, alternatively, embrace risk. This presentation gives a brief overview on these different methods and their various advantages and limitations with regard to small scale and narrow vein underground mining. With respect to these different contracting methods, the presenter reviews the mutual growth benefits of emerging partnering opportunities, specifically with regard to smaller explorers exploring and developing prospective mining tenements. The specific advantages to small explorers include the resource flexibility and speed of project development that private mining contractors can provide. Given the contracting methods that are available, there is potential for small private mining companies to gain minor stakes in major projects and major stakes in medium sized projects by employing innovative contracting solutions to provide mutual benefits to the parties. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Ertsberg mining district is a 100 km2 area in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. The district hosts mineralised and barren, outcropping and hidden porphyry and equigranular intrusions. There are at least six major (100+ m wide) porphyry intrusions identified from surface and underground mapping and drill cores. These are the Grasberg Igneous Complex (GIC), Karume porphyry, Lembah Tembaga porphyry, Ertsberg Stockwork Zone porphyry, Kay intrusion and the Wanagon intrusion. Recent deep drilling adjacent to the GIC identified a new hidden porphyry at depth, the Gajah Tidur (Sleeping Elephant), which extends south-west beneath the Kucing Liar skarn. Other named small porphyry dykes and plugs in the district include the West Grasberg, North Grasberg, Idenberg, South East and Zaagkam intrusions. The largest equigranular intrusion is the multiphase Ertsberg diorite.Igneous activities occurred in a relatively short span (<1 million years) from about 3.4 Ma to 2.7 Ma ago, based on U-Pb zircon dating. The various intrusions in the district related to ore mineralisation are high K and appear to have been derived from the same parental chamber, based on similar whole rock rare earth element patterns. Radiogenic Nd- and Sr-isotopic variations indicate that there were multiple recharge events into the parental chamber.The larger intrusions and all economic mineralisation occur in a 4 km wide zone that parallels the N60W-trending axis of the Yellow Valley Syncline (YVS), one of the large folds generated during collisional tectonism. Intrusion pathways at ~3 Ma were localised into dilatational areas in a late and/or post-collisional NW-trending, left-lateral strike-slip zone with Riedel shear offsets between the major fault zones. The Broken Hill orebody within the leases of ZC Mines is still a major lead-silver-zinc resource after over 80 years of mining. It illustrates particular problems encountered in resource and reserve estimation in old mines. The six mined ore lenses are characterised by three features: ò complex external geometry, ò high internal grade variability, ò bimodal grade distribution. The high grade 3, 2 and 1 lenses and B lode have sharp external contacts but contain some low grade internal zones. By contrast A lode is of lower average grade and comprises an extensive but geometrically variable mineralised zone within which are numerous irregular bodies of high and medium grade ore. Geological factors are the main source of variability in reserve estimation, which historically has been conservative. For many years the geological resource tonnage has been maintained at a level sufficient to make up for extraction but at a gradually declining grade. Using a geological block cut off grade of 10% Pb + Zn the present in situ resource is 53.8 Mt grading 8% lead and 13% zinc. Using empirical cut factors a "recoverable reserve" is derived from this large geological tonnage. There is some doubt that the "recoverable reserve" is conservative enough to reflect mining reality. The most sensitive indicator of forthcoming change in total resource or insufficient drilling and development is given by changes in the tonnage and grade of possible ore from which the proved and probable categories are derived. Examples are given to show that where reserves are drill indicated, the delineation required for proved ore reserves must be enhanced to achieve final stope design. The move in recent years to greater emphasis on non entry mining and lower recovery of in situ material poses a dilemma for a mine which has practised 100% recovery for much of its past. The need for a realistic reserve assessment in current terms needs to be balanced against the fullest possible geological knowledge of the resource to cater for future technological developments.

Ok Tedi is in a period of transition. By 2008 mill feed will consist of higher levels of high-grade but metallurgically challenging skarn ores. Additionally, the Taranaki pit will start production in 2008 along with the start-up of a new pyrite concentrator. Taranaki ores are very high in sulfur. Sulfur is captured in a pyrite concentrate prior to tailing entering the Ok Tedi River. These and other complex scheduling issues will need to be resolved over a critical three-year period. With these requirements in mind, Ok Tedi contracted AMC Consultants to develop a custom version of the Life of Business Optimisation System (LOBOS¬) to assist medium-term production scheduling at Ok Tedi. LOBOS utilities enable Ok Tedi planning engineers to:import polygon-based reserve data (Blast Masters) from MineSightÆs Interactive Planning Tools (IP Tools); graphically construct block sequencing and material flow constraints; edit constraints defining standard scheduling, processing and financial relationships; define dump and stockpile attributes; and assign capacities to production systems, plants, dumps and stockpiles. LOBOS converts Ok TediÆs production scenario into a mixed integer program (MIP) and submits the resulting model to IlogÆs Cplex MIP Solver. The Solver seeks an optimal production schedule that maximises net revenue per mill hour while meeting all constraints. This paper introduces Ok Tedi and its production requirements and relates these requirements to the facilities developed for an Ok Tedi version of LOBOS.

For a long time there has been a known relationship between the northern Heavy Mineral (HM) deposits of the Murray Basin to the extensive north east trending ridges in the area. These ridges have been a targeting tool for exploration and have uncovered some significant discoveries, some of which have turned into mining projects. Bemax’s Ginkgo and Snapper deposits are good examples of how the faulting helped create an economic deposit but also result in significant planning issues in the exploitation of these deposits. Material balance, induration and pyrite issues have been made easier to manage through good geological understanding of the deposits.

The Hidden Valley process plant has recently undertaken a program to relieve process flow bottlenecks and improve process automation. An environment of cost reduction and restrained capital necessitated solutions that primarily utilised existing equipment and internal resources. Removing bottlenecks relieved pressure from a strained circuit that was unable to maintain consistent performance. Improved process automation firstly stabilised the process, then allowed the circuit to sustainably operate at the expanded capacity limits. These allowed implementation of an operating approach that focused process operators towards identifying and resolving process disturbances in advance. Coal is a very versatile resource, having variable characteristics and having potential for a wide variety of mar- kets. Australia has extensive deposits of black coal, although they are concentrated mainly in Eastern Australia. Assessments of the currently known reserves are related to the qualities of these reserves. Markets available to black coal fall into the broad groupings of metallurgical, fuel, conversion and miscellaneous markets and the requirements of these markets are related to coal characteristics. Market trends in Australia and on the export market are discussed and projected forward. By the end of this century Australian consumption of black coal could well be 100 million tonnes per annum, and, in the absence of any export restriction, a similar amount is likely to be exported. Currently defined black coal resources in Australia will last at least 600 years at these projected rates of consumption. Although the position appears satisfactory in considering the projected life of the black coal resources, there is a serious lack of detailed information on reserves, mining and preparation yields, quality and possible environmental restrictions. Action is required on three parallel courses: (1) a consistent, systematic and extensive survey of current coal resources in Australia, (2) accelerated exploration activity to define poorly prospected and potential areas, and (3) regular updating and extension of the knowledge of Australia's coal resources. This information would be of tremendous assistance for the formulation of a national energy policy on coal.

THE irregularity of the Mount Morgan (Queensland) ore body presents problems other than those only of mining. For irregularity of outline is coupled with irregularity of grade, and the ore varies so rapidly from profitable to non-profitable, and fromhighly siliceous to highly pyritic, that the task of estimating quantities and values of ore reserves is manifestly rendered a difficult one, while the actual disposal of the broken ore demands constant supervision.Four classes of ore are handled. The oxidized ore, cheaply mined and cheaply treated, is obtained by quarrying from the top of the mountain. Below the 315-ft. mine level (measured from the original summit) sulphide ore comes in, and this is divided into siliceous sulphide ore (too siliceous for economic smelting), sulphide ore suitable for smelting, and ore too poor either to be smelted or to be treated by wet process with the siliceous ore. On-land waste rock dumps at BHP Billiton Base MetalsÆ Island Copper Mine (ICM) near the northern end of Vancouver Island, B.C. continue to discharge ARD. These waters, which amount to approximately five million cubic metres each year, are injected into a three-layer, meromictic pit lake for treatment. The top layer is brackish water, replenished by each yearÆs rainfall (amounting to nearly 2 m/year). This top layer of water must meet effluent permit limits for heavy metals. This water eventually exfiltrates through a æbeachÆ waste rock dump, which is 93 per cent submerged along the north shore of Rupert Inlet. The middle and bottom layers of the Pit Lake are saline and currently oxic (2 mg/L dissolved oxygen) and anoxic (0.03 mg/L dissolved oxygen), respectively. Spreading of a liquid fertilizer every ten days throughout the top layer results in plankton and bacterial blooms that scavenge zinc, copper and cadmium out of this layer eventually to become mineral sediment in the bottom of the pit lake. Adsorption on planktonic skeletons and mineral precipitates also scavenges these dissolved metals from the middle and bottom layers to form bottom sediment. Sulfate reduction has recently begun in the bottom sediments. Diagenetic processes in the bottom sediments will eventually transform most of the dissolved heavy metals into insoluble sulfides. Cycling of ferric iron between the sediment and the water column and back seems to contribute dramatically to the biogeochemical metal removal processes. This biogeochemical system serves to maintain the top-layer water well within permit limits for discharge to the environment.

Bow-tie analysis is a commonly used tool to identify and display risks that have the potential for an undesired hazardous event. The output of the analysis are bow-tie diagrams, which are an effective and versatile communication format that can be applied to any type of risk. Contrary to their simplicity, a proper bow-tie diagram that maintains its usefulness and clear communication is difficult to build. Over two decades assisting Major Hazard Facilities with bow-tie analysis for Safety Cases, several common mistakes have been identified. This paper aims to highlight those issues with examples and provide improvement strategies. A sample of the most common mistakes are: - overly complicated risk analysis - poorly scoped and defined terms - poor descriptions and justifications - identifying too many dependent controls. Overly complicated risk analysis leads to wasted time in obtaining data for little gain. The bow-tie diagram is only a model. Effort should be redirected into identifying and managing controls that will make a tangible difference to site risk. Broad scopes lead to enormous and confusing bow-tie diagrams for both the user and the workshop team. Defining the scope of the study, the consequence severity of interest and critical control characteristics creates focused workshops and targeted analysis. With more definitive scope, there may be more bow-tie diagrams, however, they are succinct and specific. Well described causes are imperative for clear communication to users, regulators and future bowtie review workshop groups. It is best to use common wording structures and explain the event stepby- step. Also, clearly document any likelihood calculations and use data references where applicable. Identifying all possible controls creates a false sense of security that there are many layers of protection. In reality, most controls are dependent on a single system or person and could all be compromised from a single failure. A definition of a ‘bow-tie’ control is required whereby it must be independent from other controls. Improving the bow-tie analysis process will assist operators in developing meaningful and ‘operational’ bow-tie diagrams to support risk management systems and practices.

On Sunday morning 7th November, 1976, at approximately 2-25 a.m., smoke was discovered issuing from the 1912 m long belt drift at Appin Colliery. A Clouth steel cord rubber belt approximately 940 mm in width had been installed in the drift in 1963 on the basis that no fire resistant steel cord belt was then available to operate on a single lift at the load and on the 160 gradient of the drift. Investigation showed that the belt drift was on fire and the usually downcasting drift was upcasting. Immediate fire fighting and rescue operations were instituted and the drift was sealed off. High expansion foam was pushed into the drift from the surface and the fire was brought under control. Recovery work resulted in the fire being put out and the drift open for walking traffic by, S-P0 am., on Wednesday 10th November, 1976. lie experience gained during the fire fighting and recovery operations led to recommendations in regard to future use of high expansion foam.

The Great Artesian Basin (GAB) contains one of the largest reserves of fresh water in the world. The volume in storage is enormous, being estimated at nearly 65 000 million megalitres (ML). Development of this resource, dominantly for the pastoral industry, began in the late-1800s and quickly accelerated. With exploitation of the resource, artesian pressures declined almost as rapidly. This loss of head is a result of the total discharge from the basin and much of this discharge is waste of water. The waste through uncontrolled bores and inefficient distribution systems still amounts to about 75 per cent of all discharge. However, the volume in storage has hardly been depleted. The major concern is the effect of withdrawal on artesian pressures. Due to the size of the Basin, the relatively flat gradients and low permeability, the movement of water through the aquifers is extremely slow and independent of recharge. Hence, the normal concepts of sustainable yield (ie discharge should equal recharge) cannot be applied to the Basin as a whole as travel times do not allow for the effect of recharge to be seen away from the outcrop areas within management timeframes. The large volume in storage, though, can provide an extensive buffer to the impacts of temporary water needs. This effect should be considered when assessing the acceptability of fixed life projects such as mines and the extracted volumes from their operations. Identifying a sustainable yield involves balancing the acceptability of the economic, environmental and social costs with the associated discharge and fall in head, to arrive at an acceptable balance.

Pike River Coal Limited (PRCL) is developing the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine is being developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km northeast of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners, road-headers and hydraulic extraction.   The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park. The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumped down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.   PRCL faces significant challenges to achieving the goal of cost effective production. The remoteness, high rainfall (greater then 6 metres per year on average), temperature variation and restrictions on access to this subalpine environment have driven the project to develop some distinctive solutions. These include the establishment of survey control in such a difficult environment with vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, significant vegetation and steep slopes by using helicopter survey, aerial photography and LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) aerial survey. PRCL has also commenced designing the placement of the main ventilation fans in an underground chamber in the stone drive.

Covers on waste rock and tailings remain the primary choice for closure planning where the purpose is to create an environment where water ingress into reactive material can be controlled and/or prevented. In semi-arid and arid environments, dry cover systems are the preferred option with the design intention to absorb rainfall and to prevent deep drainage. Although the average amount of rain typical for semi-arid environments is relatively low and evaporative demand is high, the seasonal and annual distribution may vary greatly. Rocky substrates are often the only choice for the construction of covers due to economic constraints or availability of suitable materials. While the water holding capacity may be suitable for the application of a dry cover design in arid and semi-arid climates, some of these covers bear the risk of preferential water flow when rain events are intensive or occurring at high frequency. The objective of this presentation is to demonstrate the occurrence of preferential flow through rock containing dry cover systems. A regional classification for the applicability of dry covers is attempted to delineate those regions of Australia where the characteristic of the rainfall pattern increases the risk of failure for dry cover designs. The use of teleoperation in mining is increasing due to requirements to improve safety and reduce the number of people required to work in remote and difficult environments. We recently completed a project to develop a teleoperated control system for a rock breaker at an iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, with the objective of demonstrating the feasibility of remote rock breaking over long distances. This required controlling both the rock breaker and an array of pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras using joysticks. Controlling the cameras distracted operators from the primary task of controlling the rock breaker to position and fire the hammer. This lengthened task times as both the operator's attention and their hands have to swap between different control interfaces. In this paper, we present a novel design using human eye gaze as an interactive input for the remote camera control. It follows a simple and natural design principle: Whatever you look at the screen, it goes to the centre. A prototype system has been implemented by integrating computer vision based eye tracking technology, with the advantage of being real-time, robust and marker-less. We conducted a user evaluation, where users undertook a control task while obscuring the direct view of the working area and using a remote camera to transfer the live video stream as the visual feedback. Subjects were required to participate in the experiment using eye tracking camera control and traditional joystick control respectively. The statistical analysis of objective measures indicated that our novel eye tracking control significantly outperformed the joystick control. The results of the post-experimental subjective measures also revealed much higher user preference for using eye tracking control, which provides clear evidence that this design is a better interface for remote camera control in mining teleoperation settings.

Access to geoscience reference informa- tion including mining and mineral processing has increased considerably in the last five years in Australia. This has been due principally to the use of computer-based information storage and retrieval systems. The main reference data base for the mineral and petroleum industries and disciplines in Australia is the Australian Earth Sciences Information System (AESIS), cooperatively developed and coordinated by the Australian Mineral Foundation (AMF). AESIS is created on the CSIRO computing network (CSIRONET) which has a CYBER 76 host computer located at the CSIRO Division of Computing Research (DCR) at Canberra. Data entry was until recently carried out by AMF using a dedicated line through the Adelaide CSIRONET node to the CYBER 76 interactive system. Data entry is now done directly at the AMF on a DEC PDP 11/44 mini computer that is also a host work station on CSIRONET. Data collection via magnetic tape media input from other computer-based systems is under development. The software used for data entry and management of the data base was developed by CSIRO CILES Systems Development Group. For public interactive online use the AESIS data base is transferred by tape to AUSINET - the Australian information net- work run by ACI Computer Services, Melbourne, where the data base is converted to a form suitable for the IBM STAIRS software. CSIRO facilities at DCR Canberra are used to produce computer type-set camera ready products and output in microform, on magnetic tape or as graphic display. Mark Westfield, writing in The Australian on 16 May 1994 stated: The role of the independent expert is crucial to Australia's investment system. When it falls down, there can be very dramatic consequences. The scope of these consequences was dramatically illustrated in the decision of Rogers J. at first instance in Cambridge Credit Corporation v. Hutcheson (1983) 8 ACLR 123 when the auditors of the failed company were found liable for breach of contract and faced a damages award of $145 million, well in excess of their insurance cover. No comfort should be sought in the fact that this decision was overturned on appeal, for the result of the appeal rested on whether there had been a causal connection between the breach of contract which had occurred and the loss suffered, rather than on the fundamental principle of auditors' liability. Thus: Those who prepare experts' reports in company cases carry a heavy moral responsibility, whatever their legal duties may be... Unless high standards are observed by those who prepare these reports, there is a danger that systems established for the protection of the investing public will, in fact, operate to their detriment through reliance placed on those reports and on the reputations of those who furnish them. Pajingo gold mine produces over 240 000 oz Au per year from underground mining using longitudinal bench stoping methods with a 15 m sublevel interval. Average mine head grade is around 12 g/t Au, contained within quartz veins between 0.5 to 16 m wide. The veins dip steeply (>60¦) and exhibit strike variations which lead to many curved and meandering drive/stope geometries. Unplanned dilution at Pajingo is predominantly controlled by fault planes that subparallel the vein and commonly lead to slabbing failure from the stope walls. Initial efforts at determining maximum spans were based on using the Stability Graph method of stope stability. However the method had a number of shortcomings that did not address mine site observations, including previous mining, interaction of different joint sets and the presence of discrete shears which resulted in poor prediction of stability. A method was developed to rate the risk of dilution for a stope based on observations made in the ore drives. The method utilises profile mapping of the ore drive, structural features observed and the orebody itself, on 10 m spaced sections along the ore drive. A matrix of factors determines the dilution risk for stoping at the time of mapping and the rating is transferred to longsection plots in the office. The dilution risk rating is used to determine the position and density of cable bolt support aimed at lessening the risk, and can be used to review blasthole designs prior to finalisation. The method has been used for more than two years and has proven to be a good indicator of potential unplanned dilution (ie waste outside of ring design). A recent review of the dilution risk mapping process has indicated it is assisting in reducing the impact of dilution at the operation and has the scope to be utilised further in the design process.

The difficulty in creating and obtaining a competitive edge in the mineral industry is rapidly increasing. The Kiruna Iron Ore Mine in the far north of Sweden is currently thriving on the world market through firm managerial strategy. LKAB believes in upgrading its raw material to produce a high quality iron ore product for sale to steelworks throughout the world. It is vital that this product is also of uniform quality and quantity to provide quality assurance to customers. The first link in meeting these product requirements starts in the underground workings. Mining methods and operations are of large-scale. Automation and continuous production streamline operations and reduce operating costs. These factors have built Kiruna Iron Ore Mine into the world's biggest, most modern, underground iron ore mine. To remain competitive on the world market, LKAB relies heavily on research and development. The mine is currently in a phase of upgrading its operations. A 25-tonne Toro electric loader is being tested to improve the rate of output of ore from the mine. Long hole drills are being improved to increase accuracy and efficiency. An electronic detonating system will improve detonator delay precision. Projects are underway to better understand ore flow mechanisms from a caving orebody. Benefits include improved ore recovery along with better rock quality control at the caving front. The continued updating of mining operations at Kiruna will enable LKAB to continue to maintain its competitive advantage on the world market in the production of high quality iron ore products.

The silver-lead ores of Yerranderie occur in a series of narrow, flat-dipping lodes in small bodies of quartz porphyry, intrusive into Upper Devonian volcanics, which are exposed in the western flank of the Permo-Triassic Basin of central New South Wales, about 80 miles south-west of Sydney (Harper, 1930; Lawrence, 1953). The lodes strike about E.-W. and are from 1,200ft. to 2,000ft. long. They consist of a series of ore shoots from 3ft. to 100ft. long, and up to 5ft. thick, though commonly under 2ft. thick, interspaced with low grade sections. They dip at from 18°S. to 400 S., and have persisted down the dip for 1,450ft. (693ft. vertical depth) in the Wollondilly mine, for 1,120ft. in the Bartlett's mine, and for 850ft. in the Wonga mine.The grade of ore in the Bartlett's mine was from 32% to 40% lead, from 100 oz. to 130 oz. silver per ton, 0.5 to 4.0% arsenic, with ore ,as rich as 20% arsenic on the No. 6 and No. 7 levels of the Silver Peak mine, the underlay extension of the Bartlett's lode, about 1% copper, and up to 4 dwt. gold per ton. In the Wollondilly mine the average grade was 15% lead, with sections as rich" as 36% lead, from 75 to 165 oz. silver per ton, 0.6 to 3.3% arsenic, 0.2 to 0.7% antimony, 0.8% copper, and up to 7...5. Cl~t. gold per ton. The zinc content of the ores is slight, and has not been recorded.Mining began about 1898, and to date more than 110,000 tons of ore, valued at £1,800,000, has been raised. Large scale mining ceased about 1935. The chief mines operating were the Bartlett's mine (formerly Colon Peak), the Silver Peaks, which is the underlay extension of the Bartlett's, the Wollondilly (or Yerranderie) mine, and the Wonga' (or Tonalli) mine.
