Recent changes to environmental legislation and trends in the environmental regulation of mining in the Northern Territory are being driven by (among other factors) Federal Government policies and international agreements on the environment. These trends are discussed and the expected application of the NT Water Quality Management Strategy (based on the National Water Quality Objectives) over the next few years is examined with respect to mine environmental management practices. Some of the potential conflicts and changes in approach which may develop are identified and examples discussed. Proactive means of integrating trends in environmental legislation with mine planning and waste management are discussed.

International codes of practice offer broad definitions with respect to the classification of resources in terms of risk. Specific guidelines and protocols, to analyse sample data, carry out geostatistical appraisals, develop geological models and finally estimate and classify resources, are not addressed. Neither are detailed requirements for engineering mineable reserves from estimated resources. In addition, international codes of practice fail to distinguish between types of deposit, other than in broad terms, as for example, The AusIMM JORC Code (JORC, 1999) which makes reference to diamond and coal deposits. The objective of this paper is therefore to set in motion the process of specifying detailed protocols, acceptable to the international community, for the assessment, reduction and management of risk associated with the development and extraction of mineral deposits. Ordinarily, the main risks and issues encountered during the process of estimating resources and subsequent conversion to reserves, encompass:failure to understand relevant geological controls of mineralisation; validation of grade interpolation; optimism in geotechnical appraisals of dilution and stability and the consequent selection of inappropriate mining methods; metallurgical modelling of minerals and contaminants reporting to concentrates; appraising the hydraulics of heap leaching and the numerous factors that can affect recovery; difficulty of managing metal price cycles and changes in regulations within the constraints of long-term mining plans; and development of better evaluation techniques for mining ventures. Uncertainty is inherent in estimation and engineering work, and its identification, reduction and management should be a fundamental goal of all involved in the mining industry (Figure 1). Variability may be reduced by:following internationally accepted practices for the collection, manipulation and analysis of geoscientific data; and verifying that the procedures actually performed meet the associated standards. Increasing amounts of data will also reduce uncertainty, but only if the procedures used to collect and appraise such data follow the relevant procedures. It is thus the aim of a series of papers in preparation, Beniscelli et al (in prep), to put forward detailed guidelines, for:project sponsors û to provide a global view of the work and documentation needed to support requests for funding various phases of project development and budget approvals; geologists û to indicate a checklist of the requirements and standards for the exploration and estimation of resources; and engineers and economic analysists û the protocols for characterising, modelling, engineering and evaluating the extraction of reserves. It is therefore hoped to encourage the development of consistent standards for declaring reserves within the mining industry. Data from projects and operations will be utilised to illustrate the benefits of adopting a rigorous approach to estimating resources and engineering reserves, Beniscelli et al (in prep).

Mined-out limestone/aggregate quarries in Japan contain many high and enormous pit walls. Many precious resources are abandoned in these final pit walls. In addition, there are many mines which are located in or near populated areas in Japan. Utilisationof the potentially useful under- ground space at mined-out sites is a topic relevant to the practice of surface mining. This paper describes and discusses the concept of underground space utilisation and tunnelling systems, referring specifically to geotechnical/ tunnelling parameters.

In large companies with mining operations spread over multiple sites, it is essential that consistency between sites is maintained in preparing and classifying resource and reserve estimates. The endorsement by The AusLMM and AMIC of the "Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves" and the subsequent incorporation of reference to the code into the ASX listing rules for mining companies has provided a basis for the consistent classification of resources and reserves. However, compliance with other criteria more or less stringent than the Australasian Code can present some reporting difficulties. Examples include listing requirements for foreign stock exchanges, particular Acts of Parliament that may apply to individual leases, constraints imposed by individual companies on their own leases, and ultimately, reserves for short, medium and long term planning. Confusion can arise when any two or more sets of reserves for the same lease are compared.. To alleviate this confusion, a standardised procedure was developed for the calculation and classification of coal resources and reserves. The procedure which is geostatistically based incorporates a technique called "Irregular Block Kriging" where specific mining blocks are directly kriged. The procedure has enabled those engineers and geologists with only a basic understanding of geostatistics to apply the technique and not feel hampered by some of the complex mathematics which in the past has tended to inhibit and overcomplicate the use of geostatistics. The procedure has resulted in "cleaner" data bases and hence more reliable reserve estimates.

The manufacture of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is not only energy-intensive but also releases a significant volume of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere. In addition, OPC in concrete often causes premature deterioration that affects the durability of concrete structures. This paper explores an alternative to OPC concrete called geopolymer concrete.The present research utilises low calcium (class F) fly ash as the source material to produce geopolymer concrete. Several factors that affect the mix design process such as mix proportion, curing time, and curing temperature have been studied. In addition, the long-term properties such as drying shrinkage, creep, and exposure to sulfate attack are also being investigated.The test data presented in this paper reveal that geopolymer concrete possesses high compressive strength, undergoes very little drying shrinkage and moderately low creep, and shows excellent resistance to sulfate attack. The result is extremely promising and demonstrates the sustainability of geopolymer concrete as a construction material for a sustainable future.

In a time of changing rainfall patterns and in the light of recent tailings dam failures, there is closer environmental scrutiny for proposed tailings dam construction or expansion. Therefore the elimination of the traditional tailings dam could provide both environmental and cost benefits to an operation. One method to dewater tails is using pressure filtration to achieve lower moistures than what is currently available using other dewatering technologies. Further benefits include a higher rate of filtrate recovery, reuse of waste material and the potential for dry stacking of the filtered tailings cake, thereby minimising both risk and cost. This paper chronicles the replacement of two existing belt filter presses with a single McLanahan recessed plate filter press to dewater a tailings stream at a Bacchus Marsh site. It covers the slurry testing, equipment selection, installation, commissioning and operation of the filter press to achieve the following objectives:• removing the current tailings dam and slimes cells from the existing process to minimise failure risk and reduce the cost of a dam upgrade, as well as operational and maintenance costs• free up the surface area which was previously occupied by tailings dams and slimes cells• recover additional water to be returned to the process• reduce flocculent usage• reduce truck movements and handling.The project’s owner also expects to reduce carbon emissions by over 3000 t over the lifetime of operation as well as substantially reducing operating expenditure. By recognising the carbon reduction benefits, the project owner was able to successfully achieve partial funding through the Voluntary Waste Industry Protocol.An unanticipated, but as yet unquantifiable, bonus for the project was to seek an offtake agreement for the tailings thereby allowing the tailings to be considered a valuable source of beneficiated clay suitable for the construction industry.CITATION:Godwin, P and Williams, R, 2017. Biomineralisation is the process by which microorganisms mediate and catalyse inorganic reactions so as to form new mineral assemblages. The goal of biomineralisation as a remediation tool is to control microbial processes and their environment so as to sequester and immobilise specific toxic metals within exceptionally strong bonds of neo-formed mineral assemblages. In this way, the bound metals are no longer mobile within a geological time-scale. Applied biomineralisation uses microorganisms, which are isolated from a metal waste environment and are selected for their ability to rapidly catalyse neo-mineral development from dissolved or leachable metals. A typical waste environment will contain microbes that contribute to the mobilisation of metal contaminants as well as microbes that possess the potential for remineralising available metals. Selection and augmenting the correct combination of bacteria and eliminating the competing mineral degrading reactions are the key to applying biomineralisation as an in situ remediation process. Applied biomineralisation harnesses the microbesÆ ability to stabilise toxic soluble metals into non-mobile mineralassemblages. This paper will discuss and demonstrate the biomineralisation process through several case studies including the Summitville mine site in Colorado, the McCoy-Cove mine in Nevada, the Argonaut mine in California, and an historic lead site in Crooksville, Ohio.

Feasibility studies form a vital and significant component of the project delivery cycle. They are at the heart of the valuation process. This paper focuses on variables which can affect a project and how these are assessed as part of the decision-making process through feasibility studies. Test work and site selection needs; the degree of engineering required to meet the study requirements and the quality of owner project information are discussed. Also, local factors including permitting needs, social, environmental and government relations are considered. Engineering and site factors are crucial in the estimating process. The interaction of detailed engineering, engineering assumptions and estimating methodologies are therefore examined. The ownerÆs perspective is considered along with risk analysis, which is fundamental in project feasibility study activities. The impact of this is also discussed.

The humble gabion basket is to mine development what the light bulb and safety pin are to eir-ryday life. Gabions provide a flexible, easy to assemble and cost efficient solution for "101" mine and civil engineering development applications.In some instances gabion baskets are still efficiently in use after many years of faithful, maintenance-free service. In other situations, the baskets have been demolished or made redundant within days, either having served their temporary usefulness or negligently destroyed by the operator of heavy equipment. Either way, the gabion basket must surely rate among the top 10 cost efficient engineering construction materials.

Traditional mechanised resin rock bolting in hard rock underground mines requires the installation of resin capsules into a pre-drilled hole prior to the rock bolt being spun into a hole to mix the resin and set the bolt in place. In poor rockmass conditions, especially at depth or in highly altered faults and shears, the condition of the holes often deteriorates as the poor ground around it unravels and falls into the hole. This results in partially or fully blocked holes that either damages the resin capsule when they are being inserted into the holes or prevent it entirely until the hole is continuously cleaned of debris. This deterioration of the hole condition, and continuous need to clean and re-drill holes, also increases the diameter of the hole which in turn affects the continuously mechanically coupled anchorage mechanism of the rock bolt to the rockmass as there is simply not enough resin in the hole to fill the annulus between the bolt and the rock. This results in a large increase to critical heading cycle time and, more importantly, results in the rock reinforcement not performing as per design specification and increases the risk of instability. To overcome the quality control issues with resin bolt installation in poor ground, a single pass drill, install, inject and tension self-drilling resin bolt application was designed and implemented for use in such conditions. This system allows the operator to inject a two part polyester resin through a self-drilled hollow bolt to mix and fully encapsulate the rock reinforcement. The self-drilling bolt allows for post injection of the hole after the bolt has been installed into the rock and gives the operator manual or automated control on the amount of resin used in the hole to ensure complete encapsulation and continuously mechanically coupled anchorage to the rock. This allows the reinforcement to work as designed and provide the Geotechnical Engineer extra quality control confidence in these conditions. The implementation of this single pass resin bolting system resulted in significant decreases to the resin bolting cycle time and rock bolt quality control failures. In this paper the design, implementation and embedment into the development cycle will be discussed and the in situ quality control checks used to validate the increase in rock bolt installation quality will be shared. Clays from the Santa Elena Peninsula, south-east of the Ecuador coast, were investigated with a view to identifying their main mineralogical, physical, chemical and textural characteristics as well as their potential for industrial use as adsorbents. Identified as calcic bentonites, two representative samples from the Tosagua Formation (Oligocene to Lower Miocene) were selected for acid activation trials. The selection criterion was based on the greatest amount of clay fraction (<2 ¦m fraction) associated with the greatest content of montmorillonite. For the activation treatments, HCl and H2SO4 solutions of 4, 6 and 8 N were used in a stirred glass reaction vessel with the clay sample under reflux during four hours at temperatures of 70¦C for HCl and 85¦C for H2SO4. Mineralogical analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD), chemical analysis by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), differential and gravimetric thermal analysis and measures of density, surface area and porosity indicated the changes occurred in the crystal structure of the montmorillonite. The acid treated clays were utilised in trials of purification and decolourisation of soybean vegetable oil in a ratio of 2:100 (clay/oil) at 90¦C for 30 min, under constant stirring. After centrifugation of the suspension, the wavelength of the bleached oil was measured by UV-visible spectrophotometer and the bleaching capacity of the clays was determined. The best bleaching capacity of the samples was obtained with 6 N H2SO4 acid-activated clays. The bleaching capacity was compared to Tonsil, a commercial acid-activated clay and similar results between them evidenced the potential industrial application of the Ecuadorian clays to bleaching of vegetable oil.

THE John Darling Colliery, owned by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, is situated 12 miles south of Neweastle, NSW and about 1 mile from the ocean. The area of the holding is approximately 10,000 acres, about half of which underlies the Pacific Ocean. The area was proved to be coal bearing by diamond drill boring: this method not only proved the coal to exist, but gave the depths from which could be calculated. It also proved the existence or otherwise of heavy faulting, which is a very important factor in the design of the underground lay-out of a mine. The location of shafts had to be carefuIly studied, and, before final selection, the following salient points had to be considered:Railway communications.Flood waters.Boiler feed water.Surface buildings.Probability of coal washing.Underground haulage arrangements.Lengths of roadways from a ventilating viewpoint.Before the shaft sites were finally selected, an underground design was prepared to determine the direction of the main drives in relation to the boundaries of the holding, and the of the coal seam: the latter, being an important factor in this particular locality, was ascertained by a geological survey of rock outcrops in the neighbourhood. About 74% of global seismic energy release occurs in the Circum-Pacific zone. Worldwide, about 71% of seismic energy release is in the form of shallow earthquakes, 27% as intermediate, and 2% as deep earthquakes. Seismic energy release is variable in time and has been shown to correlate with the amplitude of the Chandler wobble. It was high during the period 1949 to 1967, and is now at a rather low level, with the latest earthquake over M = 8.0 having taken place in Indonesia in 1971. The average worldwide recurrence rate for the expected largest magnitude earthquake (M "9.5) has been estimated as several tens of years, in marked contrast to the several tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of years separating the largest volcanic eruptions. Geological studies are needed to establish reliable mean intervals between large earthquakes, and to detect the e;:istence of long-term fluctuations in the ste of occurrence. Seismic gaps have proved seful in static forecasting of large earthquakes, by identifying places where closer study of the variation with time of seismicity, deformation, and other parameters, may lead to the dynamic p_ediction of time, place and magnitude of earthquakes. The model of stress concentration at asperities explains the main features of seismicity in the Circum-Pacific. Slow earthquakes have been detected instrumentally, notably an event immediately preceding the 22 May 1960 Chile earthquake, the largest this century. It seems likely that this type of deformation may explain both instrumentally detected and macroscopically observed pre-seismic deformation, as well as unusual animal behaviour reported before some earthquakes. Seismic and volcanic events are interdependent, with large earthquakes commonly triggering eruptions. Melting of rock and intrusion of magma is likely to accompany many earthquakes.

Three soil cover test areas were constructed on waste rock backfilled into the Lichtenberg Pit, near Ronneburg Germany. A fourth, uncovered area was included as a control. Each test area measures 50 m by 65 m, and was constructed using full-scale equipment and construction practices. Extensive material sampling and testing was included as part of the construction. Devices were installed in each plot to monitor meteorology, infiltration, run-off, interflow, soil moisture, soil temperature, and soil pore gases. Boreholes were completed in each area and instrumented for temperature, pressure and pore gas sampling to a depth of approximately 60 m. Data from the monitoring instruments have been collected since July 2000, and have been comprehensively analysed and modelled on two occasions. The paper presents an overview of the test area design and instrumentation and the results of the two comprehensive data reviews. The reliability of the various monitoring methods is discussed and experience with several innovative methods is reviewed. The difficulties encountered in modelling the data set using common soil physical models are discussed.

SpaDiSÖ is a revolutionary approach to the spatial analysis of point data using geometry to analyse geometry! SpaDiSÖ uses each and every spatial relationship and is not dependent on mathematical models. For n points there are n2 û n spatial relationships and, because of the square function, the method yields interpretable results for both small and large data sets. SpaDiSÖ is an alternative to variography for directional studies. At the regional scale, the analysis can assess distribution patterns of mineralisation and potential controlling structures. At the deposit scale, the characteristics of zones of mineralisation such as direction, spacing, high-grade ore direction and grade distribution can all be deduced.

This paper describes the design and construction of twin 400 m long road tunnels as part of the Northern Motorway Extension Project in Auckland, New Zealand. Construction of the tunnel civil works is now completed and installation of mechanical and electrical systems is well underway. The tunnels are expected to be open for traffic at the end of 2008. The paper will address the design aspects of the project including: tunnel alignment and cross-section, geotechnical conditions and rock support, waterproofing and concrete lining and fire and life safety. The paper will cover the bored tunnel section, the cut-and-cover tunnel section, cross passages and portal structures. The design brief included a requirement for the tunnels to be a gateway to Auckland and this required particular attention to be given to the visual appearance of the finished tunnel structure. The final arrangement of the portal structures and a requirement for recesses in the concrete lining for emergency cabinets, deluge pipework and cable runs, reflects these requirements. The tunnels were excavated by a roadheader and road planer using a heading and bench. Initial support was provided by a combination of lattice girders, cement grouted rock bolts and steel fibre reinforced shotcrete. The permanent lining consisted of installation of a drainage geotextile and waterproof membrane, followed by cast in situ unreinforced concrete. Each portal consists of a cut-and-cover section. This paper describes the tunnel construction methods, including the particular requirements for safety, the environment and community relations. The tunnel is fitted with a compartmentalised deluge system for fire fighting purposes. The tunnel control centre is incorporated into the control centre for Auckland Harbour Bridge, some 30 km from the tunnel location.

During the period 1981 - 1991, Esso Australia and their Joint Venture partners have discovered about 180 MB of liquids (crude and condensate), 60 MB natural gas liquids and 800 - 1000 GCF of gas. A total of 48 wildcat wells were drilled including 12 new pool discoveries drilled from platform facilities. Significant discoveries include the West Tuna, Kipper, Blackback and Terakihi fields. These four discoveries, contribute to 75 per cent of the total reserves discovered in the last decade and were all high-risk plays. The Kipper discovery, in the pre-Latrobe Golden Beach Group top sealed by volcanics, and the Blackback-Terakihi discoveries, located on the present day continental slope in water depths ranging from 300-700 metres are both the result of successful drilling outside the traditional exploration bounds for the basin. During the last decade, Esso and its partners have spent about A$400M on wildcat exploration activity. The exploration success rate, excluding platform based drilling, has been 50 per cent for wildcat wells. On a technical front, the last decade has heralded substantial improvements in seismic data quality. Peak frequency content in seismic data at the Latrobe Group target levels is now double that of the early 1980s. Significant advances have also been made in our understanding of sequence stratigraphy, geochemistry and geohistory of the basin.

At Perseverance a reserve of 45 million tonnes at 2% Ni was indicated by drilling. Holes were drilled in trellis pattern on section lines 61m apart to assess shallow mineralization. To explore at depth holes were spaced 122m apart, collared vertically, then allowed to deflect under controlled drilling conditions. The mineralization may be divided into the three homogeneous classes of soarsely disseminated, heavily dissem- inated and massive sulphides. In the standardised sampling and assaying procedures used to assess the deposit, attention was always paid to these fundamental ore types. All sampling and assaying processes were continuously monitored by checks. Sampling and sample preparation errors were small, to judge from the differences between results of original and check samples. Assaying errors, determined from analyses made by independent laboratories using different methods, slightly exceeded sampling errors. Comparison of underground core, c'iannel, and grab sampling, suggests that core sampling tends to undervalue.
