An efficient filtration plant can be designed only from an adequate knowledge of the filtration characteristics of the material to be handled; if these characteristics can be expressed in the form of an equation the work of design is simplified immensely. The literature of the subject contains numerous equations which have been developed by various workers to express their results, usually obtained from a 'Very limited class of material, and from moderately thick pulps. Such expressions have been found quite unsuited for use in the case of thin, very free filtering pulps.In 1926, Underwood put forward an equation having a general for m, and which, he was able to show, provided a satisfactory expression of the data obtained and published by a large number of earlier workers. This equation has been found a very satisfactory and useful tool for the study of a variety of filtration problems. One of the main steps during the decision-making process of long-term mine planning is the definition of the optimal sequence of extraction, which usually is synonymous with maximising the discounted cash flow of the project subjected to several constraints arising from aspects of technical, physical, and economic limits.Open pit mine production scheduling (OPMPS) comprises several intricacies related to its size and uncertainty of input parameters. Due to its complexity and prohibitive size, traditional mine planning usually relies on heuristic or metaheuristic methodologies which are able to provide good solutions in a reasonable amount of time. However, most of the uncertainty that surrounds the mining complex is ignored leading to non-realistic results.In this paper, a new heuristic approach is explored in order to solve a stochastic version of the OPMPS problem accounting for geological uncertainty in terms of metal content, multiple processing streams, and stockpiling option. The methodology involves generating an initial solution by solving a series of subproblems and this initial solution is improved using a network flow based algorithm.The algorithm was applied to a relatively large gold deposit with more than 119 thousands blocks. Mine dust is the most serious occupation hazard in coalmines. And many coal workers suffer from pneumoconiosis because of long-term inhalation of respirable dust. Reducing the dust concentration of workplaces by effective technical means is an important way to prevent coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (CWP). In order to overcome deficiencies in existing dust control technology for underground mining, especially the disadvantage of water spray technology mounted on roadheaders or continuous miners, the authors developed an integrated dust suppression technology utilising foam for fully mechanised heading faces. This paper presents an overview of the principles, materials, equipment and application of this technology. Among these, a jet type foaming device and a green foaming agent were developed, which can realise the goal of efficient preparation of foam. In addition, an arc fan nozzle used for foam spraying was invented, which can effectively cover and enwrap the dust produced by the roadheader at the cutting point and achieve the goal of efficient utilisation of foam. This dust suppression application of the proposed foam technology was investigated on fully mechanised heading faces. The results show that the dust concentration was cut down significantly with a dust suppression efficiency of greater than 85 per cent, an increase of over 30 percentage points compared to the water spray system. This study demonstrates that this foam technology can play an important role in dust suppression on fully mechanised heading faces, which provides an important method to improve the working environment and protect coal workers’ health.CITATION:Wang, D and Wang, H, 2015. Geochemical data from drill core samples is used in mineral exploration to enable geologists to understand subsurface geology. However, it is challenging to analyse these data sets rigorously and consistently. Manual data interpretation relies on the knowledge and experience of logging geologists. When multiple geologists are involved, it is possible to introduce inconsistencies in logged lithology type and scale of logging (‘splitters’ versus ‘lumpers’). Machine learning (ML) is a powerful tool for analysing high dimensional data (ie data with many variables) and large data sets (ie data with many samples). However, ML methods applied to drill hole samples do not incorporate spatial information and this can result in high misclassification rates and small-scale ‘noisy’ results. We demonstrate the use of multiscale spatial analysis (wavelet tessellation) as a pre-ML step to analyse spatial information. This step helps reduce misclassification and filter out unwanted small-scale variation in the data. In an experiment, we used wavelet tessellation and supervised ML to predict litho-geochemical rock types from geochemistry data. The data set is from the Valhalla uranium deposit near Mount Isa, northern Queensland. First, geochemical knowledge and statistical analysis was used to select appropriate geochemical elements for litho-geochemical classification. Second, the elements were processed using multiscale spatial analysis. Third, we trained a Random Forest model with the data set and found that the model performs worse in predicting rare rock samples than common ones. We applied over-sampling and down-sampling methods in aim to overcome this issue. As a conclusion, the combination of multiscale spatial analysis (to define rock unit boundaries) and Random Forests (to classify rock units) is a good method for rapid and accurate analysis of drill hole geochemistry.

Ventilation characteristics and the occurrence of nocturnal surface inversions have been investigated within the Mount Whaleback open cut iron ore mine at Newman in Western Australia. When winds are light and/or nocturnal surface inversions form within the pit, episodes of atmospheric stagnation can occur with resultant accumulation of dust, diesel exhaust fumes, and sulphur dioxide evolved from spontaneous combustion of pyritic shale. Nocturnal surface inversions were recorded outside the mine on more than two-thirds of nights. Inside the pit, inversions were much less frequent - occurring on roughly 20% of nights when they were observed outside - and much weaker - the maximum temperature difference being 5 C¦ over 210 m inside the pit compared with 15 C¦ over 150 m outside.

A laboratory investigation was carried out to obtain data on the explosive character- istics of selected coals mined in New South Wales. Seven coal seams were sampled and the volatile matter content of the coals tested varied between 28 and 37 percent. A mod- ified Hartmann apparatus with a volume of 1250 ml was used in the investigation. Dust clou' generation was produced by an air blast delivered radially through a mushroom type valve and the ignition source was a-continuous A.C. spark produced by a 20 000 V, 50 mA transformer. The coal dust parameters invest- igated were the maximum pressure developed, the average and maximum rates of pressure rise at dust concentrations between 200 and 1500 3 g/m.

Economically efficient mining processes can be significantly assisted by the implementation of sensor technologies for the detection of materials and boundary layers between materials inside the stratum. These sensors are meant to facilitate the machinery operator and illustrate furthermore the prerequisites in assisting tools towards fully automated mining equipment. Therefore, project æSensory Identification of Material Type and Detection of the InterfacesÆ (SIMT) aims at the integration of ground penetrating radar (GPR) and geoelectric sensor technology by endowing with them a bucket of a bucket wheel excavator. For this reason, a sensor bucket was developed and tested in the Inden Mine of RWE Power AG. The feasibility of integration and deployment of such sensor technology has been proven effective for the conditions of open cast mining. The main focus of current research lies on developing algorithms to analyse the acquired measurement data from the sensors to automatically detect layers and materials. A computer network receives the GPR and geoelectric measurement data as well as the positioning data of the sensor bucket. The positioning data mainly consists of GPS and encoder information, which is merged with the sensor data by using the UTC time stamp. With the aid of consecutive processes the relevant information will be extracted and provided to the user. The aim of SIMT is to replace material identification, traditionally carried out by the operator, by implementing a continuous operating interpretation system in mining equipment based on GPR and geoelectric sensor technology, resulting in more detailed information regarding the working face during an excavation. This detailed information provides an opportunity for efficient planning and controlling of selective mining of natural deposits, such as the process of lignite mining.

The theory of sampling (TOS) is now followed in the development of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopic methods for the pharmaceutical industry. TOS has been the guiding light for a two-step approach for spectroscopic composite sampling available for the development of real-time analytical methods for particulate-based industrial processes. The two-step spectroscopic sample composite has been used in the development of process analytical technology (PAT), an important regulatory initiative to improve the quality of pharmaceutical products. The two-step sample composite approach overcomes the low sample volume analysed by PAT methods; one of the key limitations to PAT implementation in the industrial production of particulate-based materials.PAT methods need to be validated demonstrating their accuracy, precision, specificity and robustness. TOS provides a deeper understanding of these validation studies which involve discrete particulate material. The validation of PAT methods is now being performed considering both sampling and analytical errors, while practically all previous method validations only addressed the total analytical error (TAE) of these methods. This has been a crucial impediment for the field of chemometrics as well.PAT is a key element of continuous manufacturing (CM) processes, which are considered an emerging technology capable of increasing the flexibility, agility and robustness of pharmaceutical processes while reducing their costs. The outflow of the continuous process is a 1D lot, and variographic analysis has been shown to discern process variation from sampling and analytical errors in pharmaceutical CM processes. Thus, variographic analysis is a process improvement tool with significant potential for improving CM processes. The Iron Road Limited Central Eyre Iron Project (CEIP) area, located on the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia, covers extensive Archaean iron formations that occur as coarse-grained magnetite bearing gneiss. The cumulative strike length, estimated from aeromagnetic data, is at least 95 km.The project is located in a grain growing area 185 km west of the existing iron ore and steel making operations of OneSteel at Whyalla. A narrow gauge railway built to transport agricultural products to the deep-water port of Port Lincoln, 175 km to the south, traverses the project area. A number of well-serviced rural townships are located nearby. Current activities include resource expansion drilling, extensive metallurgical test work, community consultation and a Prefeasibility Study (PFS) that commenced in April 2010.The PFS has encompassed the Central Eyre Iron Project, comprising the three significant iron occurrences (Warramboo, Kopi and Hambidge) and was completed in early 2011. Extensive test work programs and metallurgical modelling confirmed viable process options for the project, using simple off the shelf processing technology.Preconcentration by coarse cobbing yielded promising results, and is the key to reducing not only the capital expenditure but also the operating cost, in particular the power cost, which is the highest operating cost component of a magnetite benefi ciation plant. The ore is also amendable to high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) processing. This offers a potential for further reduction of the energy requirements.Test work also confirmed that a high grade blast furnace quality concentrate (~68 per cent Fe) can be produced at a relatively coarse grind (P80 106 µm).

IN presenting the following short paper the writer hopes to illustrate some uses of explosives in industrial work under conditions different to those prevailing on mining fields. This paper is based on experience gained at the Newcastle steel works of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited. The management had decided that as soon as No. 2 blast furnace which is of an improved design was ready to be put into commission, No. 1 blast furpace was to be dismantled and reconstructed to a similar design to No. 2 furnace. This reconstruction entailed the removal of the brick lining of the furnace shaft, and, also the removal and disposal of the,"salamander" and hearth-lining. For the information of members who may possibly be unacquainted with the term "salamander," it might be explained that this term is used by iron metallurgists to denote the mass of iron and slag formed at the- bottom of the furnace, whilst in commission.The method of disposal depends upon the size and nature of the salamander, and in the case under review it was decided to bury it below the hearth of the 'furnace' to be reconstructed. A passage-way was made in the concrete walls of the cast house, and the sand-filling of the cast house removed sufficiently to allow of the concrete foundations of the furnace being reached. This passage-way was extended until the hearth was encountered. The next operation was the removal of the hearth-lining below the salamander. The removal of the concrete was not difficult...

Technological advances in sensor and material handling technology has enabled a step change in mine operations performance. Sensors capable of monitoring the grade of broken rock mass can be mounted on shovels, truck loading units or conveyors allowing highly precise ore/waste decisions to be made on small parcels of rock, increasing selectivity. This increased selectivity has the potential to remove sub-economic material from the product stream prior to incurring ore treatment costs. Bulk ore sorting is capable of intervening at <10t “pods” on Run Of Mine conveyors, or alternatively at per bucket loading (5-100t) or truck scale (30-350t) parcels of ore. This Grade Engineering technique being developed by CRCORE (Rutter, 2017) can improve mill feed grade, remove deleterious materials and ensure that the high capital intensity ore treatment facility is presented with the best ore feed strategy. While this technology can improve mine economics, estimating the performance of a bulk ore sorting system is challenging. Traditional resource estimation practices such as Ordinary Kriging and Inverse distance weighting (IDW) are based on weighted averages, a process that smooths the grade profile, reducing modelled variance and dispersion. Its purpose is to generate a globally unbiased result but is less suited to generating a model of adequate granularity to enable confidence in local grade heterogeneity. This is an essential component for bulk ore sorting success. Estimating ore sorting performance requires knowledge of the grade-tonnage curve at the scale of the sensor diversion unit (SDU). Evaluation based on an estimator that smooths the SDU distribution will not correctly predict ore/waste separation or economic performance. Alternatives to traditional linear geostatistics have been tested on a variety of mineralisation styles. Additionally, a number of heterogeneity metrics have been developed to assist with evaluation and assessment. The difference between estimation for grade (metal) and modelling for traditional mining block models, versus methods used for predicting heterogeneity and variability are explored.

Magnetite ore blending has yielded signifi cant performance improvements in OneSteel’s magnetite concentrator. The magnetite concentrator beneficiates magnetite ore from the Iron Magnet Deposit and produces concentrate, which is pelletised, then fed to the OneSteel Whyalla blast furnace. Concentrator feed variability severely detracts from the concentrator’s performance, affecting both concentrate yield and grade, which impacts on all downstream processing costs.A coordinated approach has integrated mine planning, geological modelling and grade control, to minimise concentrator feed variability, through effective ore blending throughout the mining and stockpiling process.Mine planning personnel design shots that extend the full width of the orebody and hence across the stratigraphic profi le. Based on geological information contained in block-outs and in consultation with Geology, the Grade Control team allocates material to each primary stockpile, potentially from every stratigraphic domane in the orebody. This ensures primary stockpiles are designed with maximum practical homogeneity and consistency.Using only primary movement, the allocated ore is stockpiled in a layer-cake fashion. The ore is pimple dumped across the width of the stockpile footprint and on completion of a layer, it is dozed flat with an access ramp that allows dumping to commence on the next lift. The primary stockpiles are reclaimed normal to build direction and the magnetite is crushed, all in, to a concentrator feed stockpile.The ore is sampled at the crusher from a falling stream cut. These assay data, are used for benchmarking and control charting the grade and variability of concentrator feed stockpiles. The concentrator feed stockpiles have demonstrated a statistically signifi cant reduction of within pile variation, between pile variation and pile to pile variation, primarily attributable to the development of ore blending. The concentrator has seen sustained, improved performance as a direct result, which translates into lower concentrate cost per tonne and improved yield and quality.

In April, 1990 the Sydney Water Board invited bids for the construction of the Hazelbrook Carrier Section 3 being part of the Blue Mountains Sewerage Transfer Scheme. In December 1990 the contract was awarded to Costain Resources Limited, Mining Services Division for the sum of $A15.3 M. The thickener overflow of zinc concentrate, obtained from flotation process in the Angouran plant located in Iran, contains a large quantity of slimes which were transferred to the tailing ponds. These slimes have caused problems of storing and environmental aspects in the Angouran area. The objective of this research is to describe the extraction of zinc from these slimes by leaching method using sulfuric acid in pilot plant scale.Chemical analyses showed that these tailing materials contain 35 per cent of zinc. By XRD analysis, smithsonite is identified as the major constituent. Calcite, dolomite, and cerussite are found as carbonate minerals. A minimal amount of Zn occurs as hemimorphite. Quartz, kaolinite, clinochlore and muscovite are other silicate minerals in the slimes.In the optimal conditions, ie acid leach at pH of 1, temperature of 55¦C, reaction time of 120 minutes and solid-liquid ratio of 1:3 and neutralisation with Ca(OH)2 at pH = 4.5, temperature = 70¦C, time = 90 minutes, the total recovery of zinc obtained was 95 per cent.

In the economic evaluation of any Australian mining project, changes in taxation can significantly affect viability. Australian tax laws, particularly in the period since early 1973, have undergone many changes which have led to shifts in the profitability of mining companies. This paper examines the sensitivity of a selected, broadly based sample of Australian mining companies to the changes that have occurred, or are reasonably likely to occur, in taxation legislation. In the past, tax systems have been altered for a variety of reasons, such as 1. reduction&apos;in the impact of inflation 2. neutralization of incidence between different sections of the economy 3. as an incentive to encourage expansion and growth in a particular industry or area, and 4. increase in the real "take" of government. In this paper, conventional rate of return analyses are applied in a study of how profitability is affected under various taxation systems.

Commonwealth of Australia (2016) defines rehabilitation as comprising “the design and construction of landforms as well as the establishment of sustainable ecosystems or alternative vegetation, depending upon the desired post-operational land use”. For open cut coal mines in Queensland and New South Wales, the question of how to apply this intent to pits at mine closure is repeated for hundreds of individual pits. In EISs, closure plans and public discussion, assorted treatments are proposed to rehabilitate pits. While some aspects of final voids have been intensively studied, there is little guidance on how to choose a final void treatment option that delivers the optimal outcome against rehabilitation goals. For example, in the Bowen Basin and Hunter Valley commonly proposed rehabilitation actions include reducing the angles of pit walls; however, with few voids successfully rehabilitated to date there is limited understanding of what different wall slopes will achieve.CITATION:Henderson, S and Hocking, A, 2018. Brownfields geoscience measurement such as drilling and surface geophysics can be costly and it is often difficult to weigh the cost of data collection and processing against the value it unlocks at the time of extraction. This makes it difficult to prioritise geoscience expenditure and find the optimum intensity of geoscience activity across competing assets. There are multiple options for managing resource uncertainty and spatial variability through mine planning and resource engineering such as varying marketing strategy, adjusting stockpile or other infrastructure design and product blending. Consideration of these alongside increased data collection further complicates finding a comparable value of geoscience programs to determine the right blend of geoscience measurement and engineering controls. Concepts similar to Value of Information (VOI) analysis which is applied to strategic planning can be used to estimate the value of geoscience measurement and pit sequencing at tactical planning and operational timescales. This involves the quantification of resource uncertainty and prediction of how it will affect resource extraction. This paper outlines this process and demonstrates its use to prioritise geoscience at BHP Coal Assets. The value of infill drill programs in enabling operational stability is quantified and compared the value of engineering controls like increased stockpile capacity. This study supports that idea that the application of VOI methods to bulk mining at tactical time horizons has potential to inform geoscience planning and resource engineering not just separately, but as part of a unified strategy for managing resource uncertainty.

Numerous studies have explored refractory corrosion in the presence of slag and/or metal, utilising the Finger Rotating Test (FRT). Recent experimental results revealed that corrosion initially increased with rising rotation velocity but was then suppressed above a critical rotating speed, under conditions involving a two-liquid solution of slag and molten steel. This phenomenon indicated that the liquid/liquid interface movement occurred during spindle rotor. However, understanding of the phenomenon, known as the rod climbing effect, remains inadequate in the case involving slag, molten steel and refractories. To gain deeper insights, a simulation experiment was conducted on the phenomenon using silicon oil/water and the phenomenon was analysed using computerised simulation software (Ansys Fluent). Experimental modelling demonstrated that interfacial movement occurs even at low rotation velocity, as low as 200 rev/min, when the viscosity of silicone oil is at 100 cP. Computational analysis utilising the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method and a realisable k-ε turbulence model elucidated that interface elevation during rotor rotation arises due to viscosity disparities between the two fluids. Furthermore, this movement is more pronounced when the viscosity difference is lower. Additionally, the study findings suggest that higher density differences between two liquids suppress the phenomenon of interface movement.

The Yinachang deposit in south-west China contains large amounts of Fe, Cu and rare earth elements (REEs). Apatite in this deposit records complex REE mineralisation and remobilisation processes.Fe-Cu-(REE) mineralisation at Yinachang occurred at ~1700 Ma, and three stages of alteration and mineralisation are identified: Na-(Fe) alteration, Fe-(REE) mineralisation and Cu-(REE) mineralisation. In the Fe-(REE) mineralisation stage, REE-rich apatite formed together with magnetite. In the Cu-(REE) mineralisation stage, fluids undersaturated with REEs interacted with early-formed REE-rich apatite, during which large proportions of REEs, especially light REEs (LREEs), were leached from apatite.At ~840 Ma, apatite experienced a second interaction with fluid. In that process, REEs were removed from the apatite structure but immediately reprecipitated into new phases within the apatite. Thus, numerous REE mineral inclusions including bastnaesite, monazite and minor Y-phosphate occur in the apatite. There are also a very small portion of LREEs that were transported out of the apatite, resulting in the growth of bastnaesite and monazite grains outside the apatite.This study demonstrates that REEs can be mobilised in multistage hydrothermal activities and highlights the significance of fluid compositions for REE transportation and deposition behaviours in hydrothermal systems.CITATION:Li, X and Zhou, M-F, 2015. The Macraes mine is producing 175 000 ounces Au/year from a mesothermal deposit with total resource of at least five million ounces. The deposit is hosted in greenschist facies Otago Schist, a widespread Mesozoic metasedimentary sequence that forms the basement of the South Island of New Zealand. Mineralisation was controlled by a late metamorphic shear zone which had both brittle and ductile structures accompanying mineralisation. The shear zone dips shallowly (about 15¦), subparallel to the shallow-dipping regional foliation, and mineralization occurred during southwesterly-directed thrust motion. Mineralisation occurred under greenschist facies conditions (about 350¦C) during uplift of the Otago Schist in the late Jurassic. No syn- or late-metamorphic igneous bodies occur within the schist belt. The hosting shear zone is up to 120 m thick, and is traceable for more than 30 km along strike. The shear zone is truncated by an underlying low angle normal fault that juxtaposes mineralised lower greenschist facies rocks on to unmineralised upper greenschist facies rocks.
