The object of this paper is to show in some detail the mining challenges that have been presented and overcome during the successful development of the main exhaust ventilation drive that will service the Ballarat East mine during its 20+ year lifespan. Topics to be discussed in this paper include the ground support regimes employed, the ground conditions encountered during construction, how the heading was recovered after falls of ground and the effectiveness of geotechnical probe drilling at Ballarat.

The Coke Ovens Laboratory at Australian Iron & Steel, Port Kembla has been involved in the analysis of seam gases and mine airs for approximately twenty (20) years. This period has seen many developments and changes in the techniques used to the point when the current techniques are equal to other labora- tories involved in similar analyses. The laboratory has NATA registration for the analysis of mine airs and gases. Apart from routine testing of seam gases, ventilation airs and gases emmitted from coal bore cores a number of projects have been undertaken. These have served a twofold purpose, one to provide information to the customer, generally Collieries Research and Technology and secondly in developing the skills and capabilities of the Coke Ovens Laboratory. This paper discusses the development and services available at the Coke Ovens Laboratory for the analysis of gases and airs from collieries.

A novel approach is suggested for the solution of planning and development problems in the coal, mining industry. The formation of coal measures depends to a significant extent on sequential geological processes and events which are probably best defined in a "system of processes and responses." The great number of variables in such a system is a characteristic feature of geological environments. Research work over the past two decades, in particular, has successfully established analytical procedures for the identification and definition of relevant and irrelevant variables for mining developments in specific geological situations. Such situations are typifiable within the regional geological setting of coal deposits. Scale gaps can be bridged by reliance on common symmetrical attributes and pervasive geometric features. Depositional processes and their resulting attributes are responsible for the development of mechanically significant rockmass "defects" and anisotropies; such features have to be identified and assessed for the selection of colliery design criteria. It is suggested that the procedural frame- work of systems engineering analysis is a most appropriate tool for the assessment of those geological features that can influence the mechanical behaviour of the "floor-seam-roof" system in "high technology" mining operations of the future. For the past six years research funded by the State Energy Research Advisory Commit- tee of South Australia has been conducted at the South Australian Institute of Technology, School of Mining and Metallurgy on South Australian lignites. A major part of this work has been a study of the potential bene- fication of Bowmans lignite using hydrometal- lurgical techniques. The Bowmans lignite de- posit is the largest of its type in South Australia and is a major energy reserve for the state. The utilization potential of this deposit is reduced by its very high insitu NaCl content which presents serious problems for any process. Previous research conducted by Readett and co-workers (1984a & b) has shown that NaCl is amenable to extraction using simple batch water leaching operations. This leaching has been successfully described using a two stage diffusion model derived from first principles based on a simple diaphragm cell.

OZ Minerals' Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator in South Australia was built in 2008 with commercial production commencing in early 2009. In addition to recovery of valuable minerals, the flow sheet for this iron oxide-hosted copper-gold deposit has to address the issue of producing a good quality saleable copper concentrate by high selectivity against non-sulfide gangue. Detailed mineralogical studies integrated with the metallurgical test work highlighted that liberation of fluorine-bearing minerals and subsequent very efficient rejection in cleaner flotation was necessary to produce a commercial quality copper-gold concentrate. Bench scale laboratory metallurgical tests and mineralogical studies identified the need to regrind rougher concentrate to a P80 of 20 -25 microns or finer for adequate liberation of the fluorine-bearing minerals. Satisfactory separation of the fluorine-rich gangue material from the valuable copper sulfides requires highly efficient cleaner flotation. This is done by a combination of washed froth cleaning and conventional dilution cleaning. Proven equipment developed to meet similar taxing liberation and separation duties for the treatment of the refractory zinc-lead-silver ores of the Carpentaria-Mount Isa Mineral Province have been selected. The combination of Xstrata Technology's IsaMillÖ and Jameson Cell technologies addressed both the liberation and separation issues in the Prominent Hill concentrator. The energy efficient IsaMillÖ technology both regrinds the rougher concentrate while its inert grinding environment prevents contamination of mineral surfaces with 'debris' ensuring subsequent optimum flotation performance. Heading up the cleaner circuit with a 'scalping' Jameson Cell followed by conventional flotation equipment allows this section to take advantage of the Jameson Cell's high intensity flotation environment and froth washing capability to achieve maximum concentrate grade (at minimum fluorine levels) while maximising recovery through the use of conventional flotation machines. This paper looks at the development of the Prominent Hill flow sheet from the initial mineralogical and laboratory test work to the design, scale-up and early operation of the Prominent Hill regrind and cleaner flotation circuits. The mineralogically-based approach of domaining metallurgical ore types combined with the axiom of size-by-size mineral particle behaviour by liberation class gave a clear understanding of the liberation and separation issues involved in the processing of Prominent Hill ore. Technologies developed to meet much more onerous liberation and separation duties for the treatment of the refractory zinc-lead-silver ores of the Carpentaria-Mount Isa Mineral Province were successfully used to improve concentrate quality by rejecting non-sulfide gangue containing impurities. An IsaMillÖ and a Jameson Cell are included in the circuit for fine grinding and for additional concentrate cleaning. Plant performance since commissioning has justified the approach for metallurgical test work and equipment choices for the flotation circuit.

The coking coal produced by Utah Development Company in the Bowen Basin is processed by a dual system of dense media cyclones for the 30mm x 0.5mm feed and flotation for 0.5 x 0mm material. The basic metallurgy of these processes will be presented with emphasis on the operational characteristics which are peculiar to coal. Potential areas for process improvement by the application of more sophisticated control systems will also be discussed.

The Ida Valley in Central Otago is one of series of parallel basins filled with freshwater sediments. The basins are in fact tectonic depressions superimposed on NE trending grabenlike structures which occur in the area and are the result of block faulting possibly initiated in Cretaceous times and concluded in late Tertiary and early Quaternary. In Central Otago this tectonic event affected metamorphosed rocks belonging to the eastern facies of the New Zealand Geosyncline and collectively known as the Haast Schist Group. These rocks constitute the basement and the shoulders of the tectonic depressions. The Ida Valley occupies the depression wedged in between the Raggedy Range to the NW and the North Rough Ridge in the SE. The valley is approximately 38 km long, 3 to 7.5 km wide and is drained by the NE flowing Pool Burn, which meets the SW flowing Ida Burn. The resulting unified stream flows into the Manuherikia river which drains the next door depression to the NW. The present work deals with the Ida Valley basin and more specifically with the geology studied within two Prospecting Licence areas held by Gold Mines of NZ Ltd on the southeastern flank of the valley.

Maintaining and improving the economics of open pit mining in the future requires understanding of the characteristics of open pit mining that are different to other mining or business activities, designing mines in the first place to be less susceptible to changes in these important characteristics, and adopting strategies which yield reliable returns despite unforeseen change. Planning and production personnel require guidelines and performance standards that are based on sound economics not solely on production criteria. The guidelines adopted for long-term implementation must assume a declining price for mineral products along with declining real costs, with research efforts directed at development of both evolutionary and revolutionary ideas aimed at implementation. Decision-making must focus on risk and probability criteria rather than just simple return-on-investment criteria, and the approach for management of personnel must support the higher level of communication essential for fast decision-making in the new environment of continual change.

Belt conveyors are machines for continuous transport with most applications in mining industry in Poland. This is a result of simple construction and cheap operating costs. But conveying materials by belt conveyors are often in the powder state (eg small coal, gypsum, etc) and during the transport there is a possibility of polluting the environment around conveyor route. A good solution for this problem is the pipe conveyor, where a belt is closed on the route in circular shape and flat on unloading point. Another problem which is indicated in the paper is dusting on the belt conveyor boosters. In Poland a new solution of booster has been designed, whereby dustiness of transportation powder materials is reduced by up to about 90 per cent.

The Transportable Moisture Limits, as ,measured by the procedures laid down in The IMCO Code of Safe Practices for Bulk Cargoes, determine the target moisture contents for the concentrates produced at the West Coast Mines of Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited at Rosebery. Filtration of these concentrates gives moisture contents considered to be low in comparison with those achieved for similar sulphide concentrates, but which are very close to these Transportable Moisture Limits. The filtering techniques used are outlined and the problems associated with-maintaining concentrate moistures below the required limits, together with the methods used to solve these problems are discussed.

The interaction of flotation collectors with sulphide minerals takes place at the solid - solution interface. The electrochemistry of the processes which affect this interface are discussed. The interaction of xanthates with sulphides is an electrochemical process, xanthates being electro-oxidized to chemisorbed xanthate and dixanthogen. The role of oxygen is to provide a cathodic process to allow the anodic oxidation to occur. The hydrophobic condition of the mineral surface is brought about by the presence of the oxidized xanthate species. The action of reagents which can activate or depress the flotation of sulphides is discussed briefly.

Maps of mineral grade used to assess mineral reserves are most commonly generated using one of the many estimation methods available such as inverse distance weighting or ordinary kriging. Most such maps incorporate a degree of spatial smoothing which is an integral part of the averaging process. In deposits with highly variable grade which include many gold deposits, this smoothing can mask the detailed geometry of the mineralization at the economic cutoff grades being considered. In underground mining, a knowledge of this geometry is important in the choice of mining method and thus in the assessment of the minable reserves.The method of conditional simulation in geostatistics can be used to generate maps of grade which reflect the actual spatial variability of grade as measured through the variograms of the drill hole data. Simulated maps can provide a number of equiprobable images of the mineralization geometry from which a more appropriate mining model of the mineralization can be developed. Multiple simulations can also be used to assess the uncertainty existing in the current knowledge of the reserves.

A shift in the present day oil exploration scenario from West Coast can be foreseen keeping in mind peak of exploration in Cambay Basin and fast pace of development in Bombay High and its associated fields by the end of this century. Shifts in exploration from structural traps to stratigraphic traps, techno- logical development to drill in deep waters, improving economic situation for oil ventures and proven oil and gas potential of East Coast basins suggest that Indian oil explorat- ion scene will be at its peak along east coast during early 21st century. Hydrocarbon shows in Poonch and Jawalamukhi in Punjab Basin, improvements in drilling to greater depths, better seismic data aquisition, good source rock potential of Subathus and its equivalents and large geologi- cally mapped structures will reopen new avenues for explorationists. Not much exploration effort has been put up so far in Ganga Basin. Keeping in mind size of the basin, sedimentary thickness involved, presence of algal matter deposited in shallow marine environment & higher hydrocarbon indications warrant active exploration. Gondwanas in India having such a large sedimentary area can not be ignored keeping in view generation and production from the non marine sediments of Kenya, Chad, Sudan, Gadon and China. Gondwanas become all the more important in view of gas production from their equivalents-Karoos in Ethiopia and South Africa. In all, above mentioned changes can be predicted in Indian oil exploration scenario during 21st century.

Numerous recent analyses have shown that future demand for a broad range of critical commodities is unlikely to be met by new discoveries and recycling alone. The only practical alternative source to address this shortfall comes from orebodies which are currently either uneconomic or inaccessible. A common assumption is that a simple rise in commodity price will render these deposits economic. The mining industry has a long history of innovation allowing economic production from increasingly low grade and technically challenging orebodies. Industry “roadmaps” have been produced on a regular basis, with the aim of identifying future innovations which will allow this progression to continue. At the same time, there have been relatively few systematic analyses of the actual range of challenges facing undeveloped orebodies. The aim of this study is to analyse the mix of challenges faced by a group of undeveloped orebodies in order to better understand the relative importance and necessity of innovations applicable to the deposits, with the ultimate aim of determining the relative value and impact of possible innovations to the economic viability of those deposits. A discussion of the necessity for oil property valuation isgiven. A brief 'discussion of the four most common methods is included and the engineering method is explained in more detail. As an example of oil property valuations, a producing oil lease in Shackelford County, Texas, USA is evaluated.' The recommendations and conclusions arrived at frun the results obtained are presented.

BackgroundIn March 1990 Pasminco resolved to replace and increase the capacity of the underground pumping system at the Southern Operations, Broken Hill. The existing pump station was built 23 years ago while the rising main had been in service for 38 years and was subject to frequent failure.The old system was a conventional slurry/clear water separation and multi-stage pumping system. It was inadequate in the following areas:ò insufficient capacity to handle current and expected future flows;ò unable to consistently dewater lower production areas; ò pumping capacity restricted sandfilling rates;ò dirty water dams had insufficient settling capacity and were difficult to de-sludge;ò the operating costs of dewatering were high; ò it was labour intensive; andò it did not offer enough protection to the 25 level loading station.
