The concentrations of methane and coal dust vary from one location to another in underground coalmines. In the presence of an ignition source, such as static electricity, these mixtures can initiate explosions and consequently cause massive destruction. Research data can help in understanding the level of hazards and associated risk these flammable mixtures can produce. For instance, the level of peak explosion pressure and flame speed can be well understood from experimental and numerical research data. With this aim, methane–air mixtures and methane-coal dust-air mixtures were employed in a ducted spherical vessel. According to literature, the maximum value of peak explosion pressure can be obtained in vessels of spherical geometry when compared to vessels of other geometries. Thus the values of explosion parameters generated from spherical vessels can be incorporated in understanding the highest level of hazard that can occur in a real world scenario.In this study, the duct integrated with the vessel resembles any channel or pathway connected to a methane and/or coal dust rich area in the mine. Experimental investigations emphasise that the severity of explosion in the explosion zone transmits to the channel or pathway. The length of the channel or pathway also plays an important role on the values of explosion parameters. The greater the length of the channel or pathway, the higher the explosion pressure is and therefore the higher the destruction. Ignition energy and concentrations of methane and coal dust were varied in collecting experimental data. The commonly used Stopes-Heerlen coal petrographic classification and nomenclature has over the years been subject to variable interpretations. This paper discusses the problem with specific reference to the inertinite maceral group. The effect of various interpretations of the Stopes-Heerlen system on maceral analysis is discussed and illustrated by means of comparative analyses conducted by a number of laboratories in Australia.An attempt is made to define the reflectance thresholds used by the authors to subdivide the inertinite group; the genetic and technological significance of these thresholds are compared.The difficulties of distinguishing structured and nonstructured macerals of the inertinite group are discussed in terms of possible improvements to the present StopesHeerlen system by extending the classification to include transitional maceral types.

As far as is known at the present time, important ore occurrences at Mount Isa are restricted to the Urquhart Shale. These occur at Mount Isa itself, and some 13 miles north along strike at the Northern Leases.The primary silver-lead-zinc and copper orebodies occur as adjacent but discretc entities in lithologieally distinct host rocks. The copper orebodies occur in an envelope of "Silica Dolomite", whereas the silver-lead zinc orebodies occur in shale typical of the Urquhart Shale in general.At both Mount Isa and the Northern Leases, secondary lead orebodies occur at thc surface representing primary stratiform silver-lead-zinc sulphide accumulations in the fresh rocks at depth.Secondary copper orebodies are known only at Mount Isa, where they have formed in favourable environments, but unlike the secondary lead orebodies, not in the positions of the former primary mineralization that gave rise to them. The secondary copper is localized in shale remote from the point where the copper was released into solution by weathering. It was derived from very low grade fracture fillings and disseminations of chalcopyrite in the outcropping or suboutcropping crest of the "Silica Dolomite".Primary silver-lead-zinc orebodies arc oxidized without significant transport or secondary enrichment, but secondary copper orebodies arc characterized by considerable transport and extreme secondary enrichment.The original water table stood at approximately 1,150 ft (mine datum) and for the majority of the mine area controlled the base of complete oxidation fairly closely.An oxidized zone approximately 175 ft deep is general in the Urquhart Shale.Structures affecting ground conditions have influenced oxidation and leaching of the silver-lcad-zinc orebodies, and have had effects vital to the formation of secondary copper orebodies.

The treatment plant at The Great Boulder Proprietary Gold Mines Limited was designed and erected by Chas. Ruwolt Proprietary Limited in 1934 to mill 12,000 short tons per month. The flow sheet called for fine grinding, straking, flotation, roasting of the flotation concentrates and cyanidation of the resulting calcine.In 1937 considerable alterations and additions were made to the plant. The grindin,g section was duplicated with addition of two 8 ft. x 6 ft. Abco Ball Mills to increase the throughput to 28,000 tons per month, and the flow sheet was changed from "straight flotation" to "precyanidation and flotation" neeessitating the addition of thickeners, agitators, Oliver filters and Edwards roasters.A further change to the flow sheet was made in 1942 with the introduction of sulphur dioxide conditioning ahead of the flotation section, to permit the treatment of 500,000 tons of oxidised ore. Since that date no major alterations were made to the flow sheet or equipment until 1950, when the modifications set out in this paper were commenced with the object of reducing costs and increasing plant efficiency.These modifications are dealt with under the section headings and are therefore not necessarily in chronological order.CRUSHING SECTIONThere has been no material alteration in this section although at the time of writing a 650 ton capacity ore bin is being erected ahead of the primary Jaques crusher. Various influences determine how an Environmental Management System (EMS) for a mining or petroleum project is developed and administered. These influences include the environmental and resource legislation applying to the project, the culture of the organisation, the environmental sensitivity of the area, and the administrative policies of the regulatory agencies involved. While financial penalties and even imprisonment may be imposed for non-compliance with environmental legislation, there are other compelling reasons for the establishment of an effective EMS. If a company wishes to be considered by Governments for the grant of exploration or mining rights, it is important that it can demonstrate environmentally responsible operations at existing facilities. The development of an effective EMS requires commitment from the Board of the company and the issue of an Environmental Policy to empower all levels of the staff and workforce to achieve environmentally responsible operations. This must be supported by the provision of appropriate human and financial resources, and environmental training of staff at all levels from the Board to the mine site, workshop and office. A regular environmental auditing programme is essential to ensure that the EMS is in place and is effective in achieving compliance with regulatory requirements, corporate policies and protection of the environment. An EMS can be developed on the basis of existing management systems, quality management systems, existing and emerging environmental management standards (such as BS7750 and ISOI4000), or sophisticated computerised systems which may incorporate international experience, standards, and codes of practice.

The stability of parallel underground coal mine galleries and pillars have been investigated using two- and three-dimensional (3D) numerical stress analysis. Anisotropic horizontal in situ stresses and the direction of the excavations have been considered in the numerical analysis. The stability of the tunnels driven in a coal seam at various working depths has been investigated taking into account different strata conditions and then results from two- and three-dimensional numerical modelling studies were compared. Maximum principal stress components have been chosen in three various directions: vertical, parallel and perpendicular to the tunnel axis. Analysis have shown that in the anisotropic in situ stress field, the favourable direction of underground mine openings which have different strata conditions depend not only on the horizontal in situ stresses but also on the vertical in situ stresses. Furthermore, 3D numerical modelling studies have been carried out to investigate stability of multiple entry longwall panel gate roads and pillars with various width-to-length ratios (W/L). Results of the modelling studies have shown that the critical dimension of coal pillars depends on their width and the direction of maximum horizontal stresses.

Tin mineralization in both eastern and western Tasmania shows a spatial correlation with middle Palaeozoic biotite granites and adamellites. The range of composition of these granitic rocks is restricted with respect to Mg, K, and Na content. Because this compositional restriction is shown by granitic rocks from other tin provinces, the concept of a genetic relationship between these granites and the associated tin mineralization is reinforced, and similar concentration mechanisms may be involved.Gold mineralization is largely restricted to eastern Tasmania and in contrast to the tin mineralization is rarely spatially associated with the middle Palaeozoic granitic rocks, although most authors have suggested a genetic correlation with hornblende and/or biotite granodiorites.Although few analyses are available, the granodiorites that are spatially associated with gold deposits exhibit similarities to granitic rocks from gold provinces elsewhere. These features suggest a possible genetic relationship between gold mineralization and the granodiorites.The composition of granitic rocks may be used as an aid to exploration in delineating areas of potential tin and gold mineralization in granite terrains.

Normal practice in the mining industry is the creation of a single geological model. These models provide a single interpretation of the geological and mineralisation domains. These interpretations infer the exact behaviour of ore domain contacts at shorter scales when resource definition drilling is done on wider scales and are thus locally highly uncertain. The interpreted geological model provides a single number for the volume and tonnes of mineralised material enclosed by the mineralisation envelope. It is on this single number for volume and tonnage that capital intensive mine development decisions (mine design and scheduling, stockpile strategy, waste management, closure planning, dewatering strategy, product quality, etc) are based. Some of these decisions require knowledge of grade variability for small volumes of material such as quarterly production periods. It is generally recognised that this information cannot be derived from single kriged geological models, but can potentially be modelled by conditional simulation techniques. Uncertainty in the extent and continuity of the mineralised envelope and its effect on grade variability for shorter production periods is thus recognised as a major source of uncertainty in new mine development.CITATION:Jewbali, A, Boyle, C and Phillips, J, 2013. The breakage and flow characteristics of quartz, ground as a minor constituent with calcite in a continuous wet ball mill, have been determined by carefully controlled grinding tests.A mathematical model, combining the simple functions which describe these characteristics, has been used to predict both steady state and non steady state results.The calculated results are compared with experimental data.

Current spontaneous combustion index parameters such as SHT, CPT/RIT and R70 self-heating rate all have deficiencies that need clarifying from a risk management perspective. In some instances they can produce a false negative evaluation and in others they can produce a false positive evaluation. These tests all use a relative rating scheme that does not provide any indication of the time it takes for a spontaneous combustion event to develop, nor do they consider the moderating influence of moisture present in the coal on self-heating rate in the low temperature oxidation region. This is viewed as a major deficiency since the true self-heating behaviour of broken coal is primarily a function of time that is governed by the interaction of the initial boundary conditions (initial ambient temperature and moisture state) with the reactivity of the coal (both intrinsic coal reactivity and accelerated self-heating from reactive pyrite if present). This paper examines some of the fundamental economics of mining - in particular, for optimisation studies, for production rate determination and for reserve estimates.It includes introductory discussion on the principles as to how economics drives mining investment decision-making, applicable to the optimising of pit shapes and production, or truck fleets, or any other part of the mine.The main part of this paper looks at the decision to start-up a mine and why the 'optimum' production rate to start-up a mine is not the point of lowest cost according to traditional discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis. The optimum production rate is usually substantially less than this rate. The paper recognises the difference between typical mining investments and investments in other industries that do not have the unique characteristics of mining and the problem of uncertainty resolution. It examines the marginal revenue effects, the marginal cost of capital and the value of a real option to expand pending uncertainty resolution as determinants of optimum initial production rates.The final part of this paper looks at applying these principles to renewable and non-renewable resources. It examines mine life and reserve estimates from an economic perspective.

The polymerisation of silica is found to interfere with thickening of leach pulps at Risdon. Hydroxyl ion and fluoride ion are catalysts for this reaction. Stability may be obtained by the presence of aluminium or ferric iron.INTRODUCTIONAt Risdon it has been a matter for satisfaction that, although the concentration, of silica in leach solutions is appreciable, it has ,given relatively little cause for anxiety.However the margin of safety is small and some intermittent difficulty in thickening leach residues during the last few years has prompted a further investigation, certain parts of which are described here since they may be of general interest.Leaching and ClassificationThe method of leaching which is practised at Risdon has been described in, two previous articles, by W. C. Snow (1936) and S. W. Ross (1949) to whiCh the reader is referred for detail. Continuous leaching is practised, the circuit solution flowing through five air agitated pachucas in series, to tlie first of which calcine is added. The circuit solution, which also enters the first pachuca, consists of spent electrolyte from, the electrolytic cells and contains 90 -gm. of free sulphuric acid per litre. About 80 per cent of the solublezinc oxide is extracted from the calcine in the first pachuca, at a pH value of 1-1 (7 gm.H2S04/1 at 55 to 60°C. In the later pachucas the leaching rate decreases sharply. The leach pulp which leaves the 'last pachuca contains an average of 17 gm. of free acid per litre, corresponding to a pH of 1.7; but, owing to variations in extraction, the end point fluctuates between 2.5 and 0·3 gm. free acid per litre (pH:> 1·5 to 2.5). A predicted increase in aluminium production and the possibility of a diminishing supply of petroleum coke for anode electrodes in alumina reduction cells makes it desirable to find alternative electrode materials. Browncoal char, with a lower ash content and with an elemental purity similar to petroleum coke, was produced by leaching in hydrochloric acid, washing with water, and charring at 1,150°C. The cost of processing is estimated tobe competitive with petroleum coke.Without further processing the bulk density and real density were undesirably low, but by briquetting the coal before charring and crushing, the bulk density was improved to 92 per cent of the petroleum coke value andthe particle density was improved to 92 per cent of the density of petroleum coke by water displacement or 75 per cent by mercury displacement.Pre-baked electrodes were prepared from the char alone, mixtures of petroleum coke and char, and from petroleum coke alone, all bonded with coal tar pitch.The electrodes were tested for the usual physical properties and were evaluated for performance in a laboratory size alumina reduction cell.Electrodes based on brown coal char alone were found to be inferior in physical properties and performance, but mixtures of the char and petroleum coke, despite poorer density, electrical resistivity, and carbon consumptionon a theoretical basis, in performance tests gave up to 17 per cent better carbon consumption per weight of aluminium produced and 21 per cent better electrical current efficiency than the electrodes based on petroleum,coke alone.It is suggested that larger scale tests are warranted.

THE following paper embodies the present practice and the results of past experience in the survey departments of two of the leading Broken Hill mines, the Central (Sulphide Corporation Ltd.) and the Broken Hill South S. M. Co. N. L.The authors intend to limit the scope of this paper to a consideration of office methods, as much has recently appeared in technical literature concerning field work, both surface and underground. Special reference may here be made to a valuable paper on 'Mine Surveying' by H W Gartrell, in Vol XIII of Transactions, in which the author gives considerable attention to field work. Moreover, much of the office work described in current literature is American, and sometimes not suited to local conditions, being ·often exceedingly elaborate and demanding a large staff of assistants. It is believed that the methods of recording information described in this paper are sufficiently simple and flexible to be adapted to most Australian mines. Brief acknowledgement must be made to the work done by Americans, who have raised mine surveying to the position of a separate profession, instead of being merely an unimportant branch of land surveying.

Copper ores are widespread through the Lachlan Geosyncline in New South Wales, but the size of the orebodies is generally small. The largest deposits occur in the Cobar district where an iron-rich copper ore type has been developed in Silurian sediments. Similar de- . posits to the south in the Nymagee-Mt. Hope-Melrose districts are related to quartz feldspar porphyries of probable Upper Silurian age. Deposits to the east in the Tottenham-Girilambone districts are less complex mineralogically and are possibly related to an ultra-basic source.Copper mineralization in the Highlands further to the east is often developed in Ordovician andesite or MiddleUpper Silurian acid volcanic sequences. The deposits in andesite contain considerably less galena than those in the acid extrusives; a small proportion of the mineralization in the latter has texture, mineralogy, and geologic setting analogous to the Captain's Flat copper-Iead-zinc deposit, for which both syngenetic and epigenetic origins have been proposed. Very little copper mineralization occurs within granitic material, even though rocks of this type ranging from Silurian to Carboniferous in age crop out through much of the geosyncline, and the extent of the metal contribution from plutons to the deposits in volcanics is open to question. Numerous deposits are known in the contact zone around Mid-Devonian and Mid-Carboniferous granites, however, and the formation of these orebodies has undoubtedly been influenced by plutonic activity. Small occurrences of copper with associated minor nickel sulphides are developed in a narrow serpentinite belt of possible Lower-Middle Devonian age in the southern section of the Highlands.

In this case study we compare the sampling quality of diamond drilling (DD) and reverse circulation (RC) drilling at the high sulfidation Purnama gold–silver (Au-Ag) deposit located in northern Sumatra, Indonesia.There was a systematic bias of 23 per cent gold metal under-call in the diamond drilling based Ore Reserve estimate compared to the mill reconciliation over three years of production. The RC based Grade Control data and mill production data were in much closer accord. Investigation led to quantification of the significantly reduced sampling imprecision (or improved precision) of RC drilling samples relative to diamond drilling samples and the determination of a grade bias between the drill types caused by sample volume and metal distribution in the mineralisation. An infill RC drilling program was undertaken to improve data density across the pit for inclusion in the Mineral Resource estimate. This subsequently increased Au metal in the estimate by 16 per cent.The sampling imprecision of primary diamond drill sampling is rarely tested. Duplicate sampling can be used to quantify sampling imprecision at each stage of subsampling. In diamond drilling it is tested at the primary sampling stage via second half core sampling, while RC sampling is tested with field duplicate sampling at the rig. Duplicate data can be compared in a number of ways to determine imprecision including Thompson-Howarth plots which quantify imprecision to allow comparison between different methods and protocols. Ferruginous manganese deposits have been known at Ripon Hills since the late 1950s. The main group of deposits occur in an area 6 km by 5 km and these were extensively investigated by Longreach Metals N.L. during1971 and 1972 for possible commercial exploitation.Ripon Hills is a dissectcd fault plateau 350 m above sea level formed by the uplift of a block of gently dipping Proterozoic shales, cherts, and dolomite. The plateau consists of chert breccia which is underlain by massive dolomite. The shales which are ferruginous and manganiferous overlie the chert breccia but are now only preserved, in places, in the broad depression and valleys of the plateau.The ore deposits occur as supergene replacement of the shales and were investigated by geological mapping, grid percussion and diamond drilling, and bulk beneficiation testing. Iron and manganese oxides erraticallyreplace Shale accompanied by the leaching of other minerals. The ore is composed of fine grained pyrolusite intergrown with fine grained hematite and locally containing extensively altered bixbyite and braunite. Thegangue mineral is mainly kaolin.The average grade, using a 15 per cent Mn cutoff, was 19 4 per cent Mn and 25·9 per cent Fe for a combined drill-proven, indicated, and inferred tonnage of 56,000,000 tonnes. The average depth of this mineralization from the surface is 11 m. Using a cutoff grade of 20 per cent Mn the average grade was 24·6 per cent Mn and 23·0 per cent Fe for a combined tonnage of 12,000,000 tonnes to an average depth of 8 m.The substantial drop in reserves occurs because a high proportion of the mineralized material contains less than 20 per cent Mn.It was shown that whereas the lower grade ore, despite erratic fluctuations in grade, could be beneficiated to specification grade by crushing, screening, and conductivity ore sorting, the higher grade ore could be beneficiatedto specification grade by crushing and screening only. The utilization of the higher grade ore was considered to constitute a more viable operation.There is potential for high grade manganese ore to be discovered in the Ripon Hills area at the contact of chert breccia and underlying dolomite.

Bulk density and grade were determined on a variety of ore samples from the Mount Tom Price iron ore mine and the interrelationship between these properties and porosity deduced.Variable porosity is responsible for the wide scatter of data points and low accuracy of prediction in the grade of a single sample from grade/bulk density relationships.However, with a sufficient number of such data points, as from a nuclear geophysical borehole logging operation, the mean ore grade in an exploration-type drill hole (~63 per cent Fe) could be determined by regressionanal~sis with 95 per cent confidence intervals of approximately ± 1 per cent Fe. From the same logging operation, utilizing core data for calibration of the probe, the -mean fractional porosity for the drill hole (0·19 ± 0·016 at 95 per cent confidence interval) was deduced. This is less accurate than the corresponding result obtained on core material in the laboratory (0·20 ± 0·005).The range of porosity was from 0·08 for dense, high grade sectIOns of the ore, to 0·28 for friable ore of high grade or goethitic ore of lower grade. Shale band porosity ranged from 0·15 to anomalously high values of 0·48 believed to be caused by leaching of iron minerals from the shale. Porosity values for the iron ore component of the deposit are comparable to those found for the Cockatoo Island (W.A.) mine, and for sections of the Krivoy Rog (Ukraine) iron ore deposit of the Soviet Union.
